This paper takes on a heuristic approach (Crowley & Debra, 2004) to the study of Saudi writerly identity. In this critical review paper, the author argues that little work has been carried out to study Saudi English as a second langauge (ESL) writers' identity, for most of the empirical studies approach their writing as substandard writers. Therefore, this paper adds critical insights to the exciting literature about L2 Saudi writers and invite second language (L2) researchers to deconstruct the essentialized view towards peripheral writers. The paper also was guided by the question: how are ESL Saudi writers perceived in the Western educational system? Throughout the paper, the researcher problematizes that most studies about L2 Saudi writers are rife with references to phenomena in these student writings as negative transfers and linguistic errors. Other empirical studies were blinded from Saudi L2 discourse by the minutia of mechanism and look at students' writings as illegitimate. However, studies like Canagarajah’s (2013) and Saba’s (2013) can forward the conversation into a deeper understanding of these students’ writing identities and how they perceive themselves as writers and knowledge constructors. The article briefly explores the current definition of identity and how it is related to second language writing, followed by an explanation of Ivanić’s framework of writer identity. Then, the paper reviews previous research on how ESL Arab students negotiate and construct their written identities in Western educational settings. Finally, the author proposes directions for future empirical research and promising windows for studying the identity of Saudi ESL writers.

Анотація:

This narrative inquiry explored the ways in which four mid-career English teachers construct themselves as W/writers and how those writerly identities are performed in their pedagogy. I curated data collected from extended interviews, journals, personal and professional writings to build narratives of these teachers-as-writers. Through these narratives and metaphorical thinking (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980), I analyzed the wholeness of each participant’s experience with writing.

Then, in stage two of the study, I used data collected from teaching observations to build a continuum of process —> product, employing Goffman’s (1974) frame analysis to place the teachers within that continuum. This continuum represented the stable thread that continued through the teachers’ personal and professional identities and led to three insights: (1) Those teachers who identified as Writers were more comfortable teaching writing processes (2) The desire to be seen as a “kind of W/writer or teacher” brings risk writing instruction and (3) Agency provides Writers a way to mitigate the risk of teaching writing.

This thesis examines two causes of writer's block developed during the revision stage of the composing process: instructors' unexplained notations and unwanted voice alterations within students' texts. The study examines the emotions students experience caused by instructors' actions which Nelson and Rose say contribute to temporary and even permanent cases of writer's block. After exemplifying the connection between emotions and writer's block, the remainder of the study focuses on finding solutions to these causes of writer's block. As a result of my research, I discovered the primary solution is communication between instructors and students.

This thesis, set within an Action Research framework, details the development and validation of a writer-centred model of the writing process. The model was synthesised within the boundaries of a writers’ group for MA students. The initial data collected, and analysed using the principles of grounded theory, were retrospective descriptions of group members’ writing processes. After initial analysis, additional data, from group members’ writing, and from audio recordings, were used for further analysis, and to form a model of the writing process. To ascertain whether the model had value outside the specific context in which it was made, it was validated from three different perspectives. Firstly, the retrospective descriptions of other writers were collected and analysed, using the model as a framework. Secondly, the model was presented at academic conferences; comments about the model, made by members of the audience, were collected and analysed. Finally, the model was used in writing courses for PhD students. Comments from these students, along with questionnaire responses, were collected and the content analysed. Upon examination of all data sources, the model was updated to reflect additional insights arising from the analysis. Analysis of the data also indicated that the model is useable outside its original context. Potential uses for the model are 1) raising awareness of the process of writing, 2) putting writers at ease, 3) serving as a starting point for individuals or groups to design their own models of the writing process, and 4) as a tool to help writers take control of their writing processes.

L’enjeu de cette thèse qui allie recherche et création est d’étudier la partition par les formes scripturaires ou typographiques qu’elle emprunte. Nous analysons également ses modalités de diffusion dans le cadre de notre propre pratique d’artiste-éditeur avec la revue Véhicule et grâce à des entretiens avec différents protagonistes de l’édition théâtrale. Nous prenons comme cadre de cette étude sur la partition son statut de projet destiné à un tiers, document-actif qui, même lorsqu’il provient des archives, inclut une potentielle activation. De la sorte, nous posons l’hypothèse que la partition est à la fois œuvre et outil, trace et devenir. La partition est alors déléguée à un lecteur/spectateur concurremment déchiffreur, co-créateur de l’œuvre et responsable de son activation ou de son interprétation. Après avoir posé quelques repères généraux sur la notion de partition, nous interrogeons celle-ci dans sa plasticité. Nous observons d’abord des œuvres grammatextuelles pour comprendre comment la page, en tant que forme graphique, peut être agissante et transmettre des instructions visuelles ou textuelles au lecteur-interprète. Puis, nous analysons des partitions qui produisent des images, par une effectuation concrète ou mentale
The issue of this thesis combining research and creation is to study the score through the written or typographic forms it uses. We also analyse the ways and means of the diffusion of score, in our own practice as publisher-artist with the review Véhicule and through interviews with various protagonists of the theatre publishing scene. The framework that was chosen for this study of the score is its status as project destined to a third person, an active document which, even when it comes from archives, involves a possible activation. Thus, we formulate the hypothesis that the score is at once work and tool, trace and project. The score is then delegated to a reader/spectator who is at the same time a writerly decoder, who co-creates the work and is responsible for its activation or its performance. After having laid out a few general points of reference on the concept of the score, we question its existence as a visual art work. We first observe grammatextual works, in order to understand in what way the page, as graphic form, can be active and transfer visual or textual instructions to the reader-performer. Then we will analyze scores that produce images, via a concrete or mental operation

AbstractThis contribution analyzes guidebooks that deal specifically with keeping a writer’s notebook, a process-document that may elude the common association of creative writing with its published literary commodities. Creative writing’s pedagogical question “can it be taught?” is complicated since this “it” is so poorly codified by the notebook. I consider three groupings of advice in the notebook-guidebooks in relation to that complexity and discuss their uselessness where writing invents part of its pedagogical needs only in the process of its own happening. Firstly, the guidebooks take on a radical process-pedagogical approach. They promote a kind of irresolute and unpredictable (“end-less”) writing that discovers its objects in the event of their coming-to-be, instead of hypothesizing them beforehand. Note-taking appears here as a self-creative event rather than a preplanned act—a means without an end. Secondly, rather than providing poietic writing recipes, the guidebooks give advice on writerly attitudes or dispositions. The elements of art are presented as existing latently in the world and the practice of note-keeping orients their drawing-out and literary becoming since its technology straddles the contextual and the textual (“creative receptivity”). Thirdly, when addressing the move from the notebook’s writing-for-writing’s sake toward an eventual literary commodity, the guidebooks resist concluding writing’s “invention phase” absolutely. Rereading and rewriting in the notebook continue to inform events that exceed and requalify the intermediate junctures of the literary work’s development (“besideness”).

The article analyzes the illustrative work of Russian writers of the first quarter of the 19th century. Special attention is paid to the definition of the term "writer-artist", as well as to techniques for creating the image of a writer-Illustrator in a work of fiction. In conclusion, we draw a conclusion about the relationship between literature and painting (on the example of interpreting the creativity of word masters who create illustrations for their works), as well as about the unique communicative nature of the image of the writer-artist.

Ion Creangă’s personality challenged the filmmakers on both banks of the Prut to create films in which to bring the famous storyteller back to the big screen. And if the genre of fiction film allows itself an artistic approach, with deviations and directorial inventions, then the non-fiction film is based on the document, drawing the true nature of the writer. In this context, there are a series of films, which aim to follow various aspects of the writer’s life, such as: Creangă (1973, directed by Vlad Druc), Creangă si Junimea (1989, directed by Ioana Holban), Ion Creanga’s God (1996, directed by Grid Modorcea), Ion Creangă (1999, directed by Anatol Codru) and others. But even these films are largely influenced by the writer’s work oscillating between document and fiction. We will refer to the films Ion Creangă’s God and Ion Creangă and analyze them from the perspective of that amalgam of events taken from the masterpiece of the writer Childhood Memories that form a common body with the rich iconographic material (photos, books, documents, archive documents, etc.) and biographical data, which being incorporated into a whole, give a special charm to the life of the writer.

The presented article discusses the issues of Nakhchivan literary environment and literary translation. It is noted that translation is a creation in itself, and the activities of representatives of the Nakhchivan literary environment in this area are exemplary. In general, during the independence period, some experience was gained in the literary environment of Nakhchivan, translations from German, English and French by our poets and writers Hamid Arzulu, Shirmammad Gulubeyli, Shamil Zaman who is famous as poet, prose-writer and translator were delivered to readers in the form of books and works were published in the press. The examples presented in the article once again prove the perfection of the writers' translation activities, their translations from German, English and French provide the Azerbaijani reader with full information about the society, people and their life of these peoples. The research materials can be used in teaching the educational disciplines «Literature of writers of Ugra», «Methodology for teaching the native language and literature» at higher school [2, р. 46], as well as at lessons in the native language and literature in secondary schools with a national-regional component.

Desalination systems based on the Humidification Dehumidification (HDH) process come in a large variety of forms. They all operate in very similar manners, all requiring the evaporation of salt water and the condensation of pure, distilled water, in the same way clouds are formed every day. As engineers we must pursue the processes that have the best possible efficiency for the specific situation we find ourselves in. The purpose of this paper is to explore the various Humidification Dehumidification desalination processes and thermodynamically compare them with one another in order to determine which one of these processes has the most potential in specific environmental situations. This paper explores the advantages and disadvantages of all HDH processes as well as compare them with more common desalination methods like reverse osmosis. An in depth study of available literature is conducted, listed and explained regarding these HDH processes and their specific characteristics, focusing on the key points of efficiency, limiting factors and environmental effects. In some cases these processes, especially those utilizing the open air cycle or solar collectors, can be severely affected by environmental situations. The environmental situations can include high humidity environments, high temperature environments, high rainfall environments and of course the polar opposites of these situations and any combination of them. The paper takes into account these environmental effects and makes recommendations based on different environmental situations that can be found around the world. The HDH processes can obtain the energy they need to operate from various sources. Recommendations are also made with this in mind. Recommendations are also made regarding possible processes and specific design areas, which, in the in the writers opinion, should be the focus of improvements made by future designers are noted. Considering the efficiency limiting areas that cause bottlenecks in the processes, the writer prescribes possible ways to limit the effects of these bottleneck areas. The writer’s own recommendations regarding possible processes and possible improvements are also stated, paying attention to the recommendations already found in literature.

Nintama Rantaro is a long running TV anime series in Japan, which is produced by a large number of staff members. In the present study, 228 episodes of this series were selected to analyze the relationships among the staff members and the elements in the episodes, using correspondence analysis and cluster analysis. Numbers of storyboard writers, animation directors, screenplay writers and directors, and factors of the stories, e.g., representative expressions, motions of the main characters and emotions of the main characters, were counted, and a cross-tabulation table was constructed. The results of the correspondence analysis of the table showed that a three-dimensional space illustrated the correlations in the table with the cumulative contribution ratio of 42 %. The results of the cluster analysis with Ward’s method showed four clusters. Each of the four clusters coincided to each quadrant on the plane spanned by the first two dimensions. In the first quadrant, an animation director Tsuyoshi Ichiki was plotted. In the same quadrant, fighting motions of the main characters were plotted. Tsuyoshi Ichiki is one of the most proficient anime directors for battle scenes. Therefore, this indicates that the animation of episodes which includes battle scenes is chiefly directed by Tsuyoshi Ichiki in Nintama Rantaro. In the second quadrant, experienced animation directors, Emiko Niiyama and Kazue Tamari were plotted as well as a screenplay writer, Mitsuharu Yoshida who frequently writes the screenplay for the initial episode of a season. Moreover, characteristic expressions in Nitama Rantaro, such as the escape of the soul from the body, use a regional dialect “bayai” instead of “baai”, and the appearance of a character with breaking the screen, were plotted in this quadrant. This implies that the experienced animation directors and the screenplay writer use characteristic expressions especially for the initial episode of a season. In the third quadrant, an animation director Setsuko Shibuichi, who previously directed animations with sad stories, was plotted. The sad emotion of a main character is also plotted in the same quadrant. This indicates that for a sad episode, Setsuko Shibuichi directed the animation. In the fourth quadrant, screenplay writers, Satoshi Kimura and Kazuko Iwasaki are plotted as well as an animation director, Yasuhiro Endo, and various directions of motions of the characters are also plotted. This means that they are proficient dynamic motions of characters. In this way, the relationships among the staff members and the elements of the anime episodes are clarified in the context of Nintama Rantaro.
