Доклад представляет собой попытку осмыслить феномен открытого экзистенциального столкновения с миром в его беспрерывном течении через единственно существующий момент, который открывает выход к созерцанию вечности. The report is an attempt to comprehend the phenomenon of an open existential collision with the world in its continuous flow through the only existing moment that opens the way to the contemplation of eternity.

A service robot accepting verbal commands from a human operator is likely to encounter requests that reference objects not currently represented in its knowledge base. In domestic or office settings, the construction of a complete knowledge base would be cumbersome and unlikely to succeed in most real-world deployments. The world that such a robot operates in is thus “open” in the sense that some objects that it must act on in the real world are not described in its internal representation. However, when an operator gives a command referencing an object that the robot has not yet observed (and thus not incorporated into its knowledge base), we can think of the object as being hypothetical to the robot. This paper presents a novel method for closing the robot’s world model for planning purposes by introducing hypothetical objects into the robot’s knowledge base, reasoning about these hypothetical objects, and acting on these hypotheses in the real world. We use our implementation of this method on a domestic service robot as an illustrative demonstration to explore how it works in practice.

Background: Laparoscopic surgery is an expanding field which is recognized as gold standard for cholecystectomy, it is being increasingly used by many surgical subspecialties with advantage of being minimal invasive and being both diagnostic and therapeutic. Objectives: This study was done to evaluate the feasibility of laparoscopic appendectomy in a developing world scenario.Material and Methods: This observational cross-sectional study was conducted under department of general surgery from September 2019 to August 2021. The patients presenting to the ER department were evaluated based on Alvarado score. Alternate patients underwent laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) and open appendectomy (OA). Based upon clinical and imaging signs of acute appendicitis (i.e. Alvarado score of 7 or more) and consent to be the part of study, were used as inclusion criteria, while pregnancy, patients who could not tolerate increased intra-abdominal pressure/prolonged anesthesia, patients under 10 years of age and patients with evidence of appendicular mass formation were excluded from the study. The standard surgical techniques were performed for both groups and the patients were followed up in immediate post-operative period, at 6 months and one year. Results: The parameters observed were duration of surgery average 25 minutes (range 15-50 mins) for OA and 70 minutes (range 40-90 mins) for LA (P-Value 1.41E-70), return to preoperative activity level was 13 days (range 10-17 days) for OA and 10 days (range 9-14 days) for LA (P-Value 6.69034E-22), and average cost for OA was PKR 35279.00 while for LA was PKR 72168.00 (P-Value 1.24442E-60). Remaining parameters were not significantly different. Conclusion: The evidence available clearly demonstrates that laparoscopic appendectomy is superior to open appendectomy in terms of hospital stay, post-operative pain and return to work, however in a few situations the procedure needs to be converted therefore the surgeon must be conversant with open appendectomy for complicated case. Moreover, cost is a major factor determining the choice of procedure specially in the developing countries. The question of whether the perceived world is a mere illusion has been a key area of interest to both essentialism and existentialism. Plato, the essentialist, argues that there is an objective reality transcendent to that which we perceive. Lacan, similarly, proposed that there exists a totality of reality in the human psyche, open to neo-natal children who have not yet entered the external world through language. In this paper, I argue that Lacan had taken a different route to Plato via his portrayal of the Real, that is, the original state of the world before it is rendered inaccessible by the egos entrance into the perceived reality, or the Mirror World. Elusive of being formulated by the signs of the perceived reality, or the Imaginary-Symbolic order, it is but a nothingness without concrete being. What exists is what is accepted as a part of the linguistic and epistemological conventions of the external world, and the perceived reality a mere Mirror Reflection of the psychic and social symbols and is thus illusory. The Ego, likewise, is argued to be contingent and imaginary, born out of its misidentification with ones mirror image that one sees in the external world.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to reflect on being mindful as a phenomenological attitude rather than on describing mindfulness as a therapeutic intervention. I will also explore the possibilities that being mindful might open up in relation to nursing research and holistic nursing. Design and Method: I will describe and interpret mindfulness as a state of being by means of van Manen’s phenomenological method, using the language of phenomenology rather than the language of reductionist science. Thus, this article can be considered a reflective narrative, describing both the process of orienting to the phenomenon, making preunderstandings—including own experiences of mindfulness—visible, and a thematic analysis of nine scientific articles describing the phenomenon. Findings: Being mindful as a phenomenological attitude can be described as a deliberate intentionality, where the person is present in the moment and open to what is going on, bridling personal values and accepting the unfamiliar, thus achieving a sense of being peacefully situated in the world, and able to apprehend one’s being-in-the-world. Conclusions: Being mindful as a phenomenological attitude can contribute not only to phenomenological nursing research but also support nurses’ presence and awareness.

AbstractThis paper attempts to develop a comparative approach to the dream narratives of the Daoist philosopher Zhuang Zhou and the Austrian poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The analogous rhetorical function of the dream in their texts links the two authors from different cultures and traditions. As will be argued, in using dreams to stress a challenging and even deconstructive view of the so-called reality, both Zhuang and Hofmannsthal articulate their skepticism against substantial notions of human subjectivity and offer an imaginary life-world which aims to remind us of the contingency of our being-forms. In so doing, they also shape an aesthetic way to keep oneself open to the perception and experience of the unbiased Dao or Being. Thus, their poetic texts can be read in the context of rethinking the boundary between our life and world.

Apart from being a medium for entertainment simulation, video games also provide a representation of the social world. Game industry developers always carry out research to provide socio-cultural, historical and philosophical system content to enrich the content in the game. The story background in video games aims to provide experiences and impressions for the players. This research aims to qualitatively explore forms of religious representation that are simulated in open world video games. So players can play role characters in the game to experience spirituality and religiosity. Either through latent and manifest narratives or through moral choices in the context of developing the storyline and Player character in the Game. This research uses Emile Durkehim's sociological perspective of religion regarding Karl Marx's totemism and commodity fetishism to observe the incarnation of the gaming industry as an altar of worship for its players, as well as Jean Baudrillard's postmodernist perspective with his simulacrum concept to analyze the form of simulation and representation of religious symbols that appear in the game. these open world games... This research finds that the use of simulations and the distribution of representations of religious signs or symbols in games forms a religion simulacrum or a blurring of spiritual boundaries between the pseudo and the real. Video games build the Player's construction of religiosity and spirituality virtually in a simulated world that contains ritual practices, ethics, morality, cosmology, metaphysics, and theology.

Man has remained as a supposition at the very heart of scientific and philosophicalthought. Today still the anthropological inquiry seems quite redundant since man is3 considered a being who is able to internalize his life's value and meaning, that ofothers and of his surroundings, as far as he can rule everything by the diktat of social and political consensus. With that understanding, man's history has not been otherthan the history of a philosophical injustice which has lost him through the logic of discipline and domestication. It has plunged him into a devastating fight against thedesire that he is, a fight that presents itself under the form of a total experimentation of man's world and of himself. We owe to critical thought that the anthropologicalinquiry has become the inevitable path that leads man to his own life, that he can only live with his social partners. The political, ethical, moral, aesthetic and metaphysicalprinciples which conceive man as an available being, doped on the pleasure gained in a life ruled by the economy of action are dismantled by Arnold Gehlen and JacquesPoulain. Based on the discovery of communicative process which constitute human life, the latter has unveiled the dynamics of the aesthetisation of the world and of the self-destruction of individuals and groups that appear covered with the cheerful mask of the best possible ways of life. Thus, against all prognostics, Poulain'santhropobiological aesthetic opens both a new path to an objective and truthfulunderstanding of man's reality, as well as it gives access to the aestheticinternalization of theoretic life which is man's

To mark 150 years of being ‘Open to the World’ Ca’ Foscari invited students to write about their mobility experiences abroad, and to focus on a learning experience – not necessarily a formal one. More than a hundred students participated. This volume brings together the winning accounts and all the short and long listed entries. As well as illuminating the significance of the mobility experience to students’ personal development and celebrating fundamental human values of tolerance, friendship, and hospitality, they reveal a great well of creative resources in the use of English as a lingua franca.

AbstractYouthMappers chapters are both locally and globally situated, fostering a confluence of community input, GIS skill sets, subject-matter expertise, and creativity that drives progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Examining Hudson Valley Mappers’ and Gaston Berger University YouthMappers’ community mapping projects in parallel offers rich insights on open mapping for SDG 3 Good Health and Well-being and highlights the value of SDG 4 Quality Education. Both YouthMappers chapters collaborated with local partners to map health facilities and other community resources; the resulting maps and data filled critical information gaps during the COVID-19 pandemic. The project outcomes underscore the unique niche that the YouthMappers network occupies in the open mapping world.

AbstractDrones are being used in various industries, focusing on youth involvement and mapping activities as a key component of the multiple initiatives. YouthMappers are creating open-source geospatial data using geospatial technology to address local developmental and humanitarian issues in Malawi and beyond. As the world works to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, this new technology, combined with significant youth involvement, is being used to its full potential because of its sophistication, which allows for more efficient operations in support of industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9) and responsible consumption and production (SDG 12) in the health sector for delivery, precision agriculture and the education sector, to name a few.

AbstractI seek to show that the declared aim of Dōgen’s writings, which were often edited versions of ritualised verbal teachings, was to guide disciples on the Buddha Way—a practical path to salvation that was clearly defined and delimited by an authoritative tradition. Dōgen, therefore, tried to preclude rather than foster the open-ended discussion of fundamental problems of human life that is otherwise usually associated with the concept of philosophy. Hence, Dōgen speaks a language of persuasion that is guided by aims and rules of discourse different from those of philosophy. This, or so I argue, is an aspect that is often lost when Dōgen’s thoughts are transferred into philosophical debates. The result is, in many instances, a rather facile alignment with the recipient’s own preconceptions. To substantiate my hypothesis, I start from factual observations concerning the modern philosophical reception of Dōgen’s teachings on time in Japan and the Anglophone world, focusing on the semantic shifts occurring in interpretations by prominent authors such as Tanabe Hajime, Ōmori Shōzō, Rein Raud, and others. I then turn to the theory of translation to analyse the seminal factors at play in this observed process of transformative reception. Finally, I reflect on how conceiving of the transfer of Dōgen’s thought into philosophical discourse as a process of translation can help to build interpretations that are both hermeneutically sound and philosophically interesting.

Abstract The development of cultivars exhibiting improved climate resilience and containing effective input and agronomic traits and their adoption by growers and acceptance by supply chains, consumers, and society remain essential drivers of a successful agricultural strategy directed to feed the world and overcome the challenges brought by nature, an increasingly stringent regulatory environment, and an ever-growing population. In order to deliver on the daunting challenge of providing affordable, nutritious food to humankind, while reducing agriculture’s environmental footprint, new innovation models are needed. Open innovation is being adopted by seed companies in order to tap into the vast pool of human talent available beyond their boundaries and increase their ability to generate, adopt, develop, and bring to market novel technologies while building upon the increasing global community of innovators and harnessing the resources of venture capitalists. In addition, open innovation can help streamline product development processes, as well as lead to the exploration of novel markets which would otherwise go unexploited. At the same time, open innovation provides the means for other firms and entrepreneurs to gain access to technologies which would be beyond the scope of their development abilities but which can be leveraged to create significant value for their own customers and markets. This chapter provides an updated perspective on the most salient aspects of open innovation. Though its main focus is crop genetics and the development of improved cultivars, the general principles discussed also apply to other activities associated with the value chains linking agriculture and customers.

AbstractIn the current digital era, language technologies are playing an increasingly vital role in the legal domain, assisting users, lawyers, judges, and legal professionals to solve many real-world problems. While open datasets and innovative deep learning methodologies have led to recent breakthroughs in the area, significant efforts are still being made to transfer the theoretical/algorithmic developments, associated with general text and speech processing, into real applications in the legal-domain. This chapter presents a brief survey on language technologies for addressing legal tasks, covering studies and applications related to both text and speech processing (Manuscript submitted in May 2022).

AbstractAs has been argued, there are good reasons to think that, assuming physical indeterminism, the asymmetry between the ‘open future’ and the ‘fixed past’ is to be characterized as a kind of worldly unsettledness: there being facts of the matter about what happened, but not about what will happen. However, the main models of the temporal structure of the world – eternalism and presentism – do not reflect any ontological asymmetry between the future and the past. According to these models, either both the future and the past exist, or neither the future nor the past exists. So, in this chapter, I argue that we should opt for an alternative model of the temporal structure of the world – the growing block theory (GBT) – that seems better designed to accommodate the asymmetry in openness between the future and the past.

AbstractDigital literacy is a critical competence for empowering citizenship in a digital world. It has become a key element in teaching and learning across the different educational stages that has been addressed since the last decade of the twentieth century within the field of open, distance, and digital education. The literature so far has not agreed on a common definition, but multiple international, national, and even local, frameworks exist to foster digital literacy and to evaluate and certificate it, especially with a focus on educators and students in different educational levels, but also with the citizen perspective. These frameworks are reviewed in this chapter, along with the evolution and conceptualization of digital literacy and some strategies to foster digital literacy in different educational sectors, with a focus on the educator as a key player in this fostering action. The most remarkable challenges for developing digital literacy for teaching and learning include the same conception of digital literacy, which is multiple and situated, the digital divide and the actual consideration of digital literacy as a social practice. Being digital literacy a transversal competency nowadays, clear implications for education can be drawn, such as reshaping organizations to the digital conditions, thinking on digital literacy as a collective effort, and enriching the global discourse through diversity in debates.

AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic has caused new ways of doing and being, both in education systems and beyond across the world. In the context of Aotearoa/New Zealand, the widely supported government approach focused on the well-being of the nation with a position that saving lives was more important than maintaining an open economy. As researchers and educators, we supported teachers as they worked with their students in their home settings. This provided us with an opportunity to explore a vision of a reinvented system of mathematics education beyond institutional and formal structures of schools. In this chapter, we present the analysis of the responses from 24 educators mainly from low socioeconomic urban settings as they reflected on how they enacted mathematics teaching and learning during the lockdown while connecting with students and their families as well as their subsequent learning from this experience. Results highlighted that the mathematical learning of students went beyond what was accessed by digital means and included parents drawing on rich everyday opportunities. A key finding was that by supporting and privileging the well-being of students and communities, the connections and relationships between educators and families were enhanced.

Therapists and counselors are at high risk of developing secondary trauma, burnout, and compassion fatigue. Continuous exposure to the trauma and pain of patients can have a negative impact on the wellbeing of therapists. Burnout is a state of mental, physical, and emotional exhaustion brought on by accumulated stress. Compassion fatigue is a condition in which someone becomes numb to the suffering of others and is unable or less able to display empathy towards them. The World Health Organization defines burnout as an occupational phenomenon that should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life. Burnout is included in the International Classification of Diseases 11 as an occupational phenomenon resulting from unmanaged, chronic workplace stress. Professional burnout is a multidimensional condition that includes exhaustion, detachment, and professional efficiency (Maslach burnout inventory). When counselors and therapists experience burnout, their patients are also negatively affected. Understanding the extent and incidence of burnout and compassion fatigue among therapists and counselors is the study's principal goal. A qualitative method-based study including therapists and counselors based in Bangalore, India. Detailed, semi-structured face-to-face (online) interviews were conducted through open ended questions with the help of an interview guide based on social situation, economic situation, and personal characteristics. A thematic analysis was undertaken. The majority of them explained difficulties faced in compartmentalizing work and personal life in the initial years of work, economic and family responsibilities associated with burnout, empathizing with clients more due to similar personal experiences, increased workload, and the Jesus complex. Keywords: burnout, compassion fatigue, counselor, therapists, exhaustion

As part of the African Data Initiative, this poster focusses on the procurement menu of R- Instat, a tailored product of R-Instat designed specifically to analyse datasets on public procurement. The menu, initially tailored around an online-available dataset of World Bank funded public procurement tenders awarded across 171 countries, implements a new, objective methodology for measuring corruption risks. By specifying recognised procurement variables in their dataset, such as number of bidders, users can allow R-Instat to suggest appropriate analyses of their data. Experience using this data in a hands-on workshop for mathematical science MSc students in Tanzania demonstrated the educational value of this tool. The menu has also been used to teach Public Procurement Management Masters students in Italy about corruption risks methodology using European procurement datasets. There is a growing movement towards more data becoming open, with initiatives such as the Open Contracting Partnership. Open data has exciting consequences for training statisticians and public procurement students. However, being able to fully take advantage of the open data movement requires tools that enable users to easily carry out appropriate analyses. Trainings using R-Instat have shown this has the potential to fill this gap. Future development of the procurement menu to support more varied datasets could make it easier for trainers to incorporate more real- world data into courses.

80 years after its publication, Antoine de Saint Exupery’s book, The Little Prince, has its readers everywhere, being an open, flexible work, accessible to very varied categories of readers - from primary school children to adults who I reread it for the umpteenth time and find it so full of meaning. Recommended in the school curriculum, it appears in the reading lists that the teachers of Romanian language and literature compile to be a guide for students entering the secondary school cycle. Precisely because it is a book that offers so much on an interpretive level, it deserves to be studied and analyzed, on a textual level, the ME-OTHERS distinction, it operates as a method of inter and self-knowledge. The journey of the Little Prince on the surrounding planets is like an initiatory path, also a form through which he seeks happiness, following the call of the flower: „Seek to be happy!” The stops he makes are proof that every man has his own planet, his own universe over which he is master. The intercultural side allows teachers working with secondary school students to bring them closer, through an analytical reading, to what, in fact, represents our relationship to the OTHER, in the sense of a good self-knowledge exercise.

Companies are increasingly obliged to collaborate with each other if they wantto be innovative, and this growing transfer of knowledge takes place in acontext of Open Innovation. To study these scientific-technologicalcollaboration networks within an Open Innovation context, the case study ofIberdrola, a Spanish business group dedicated to the production, distributionand marketing of energy, has been chosen. Two methods have been used; thebibliometric method to analyze the Iberdrola scientific network, and patentdata analysis, to analyze the technological network. This has been achievedby using the Scopus and PatSeer databases, and refining the data withVantagePoint software. It was found that in both cases collaboration takesplace with the university, other companies, and research centers. Iberdrolahas an extensive scientific and technological collaboration networkthroughout the world. Both scientific and technological collaboration, despiteit not being common practice in companies, nevertheless, it can be concludedthat Iberdrola is committed to such collaboration in following with theguidelines of its organizational model based on Open Innovation.

The paper focuses on promoting open education and free educational resources. The dynamics of the changes that take place in the world are a challenge for all actors in the education system. Accepting and promoting the postmodern paradigm, based on humanism and constructivism, approaching education from the perspective of the learner and developing the education process from the perspective of the pedagogy focused on competences are just some of the new imperatives. All these realities require a resizing of the educational process and resources, but also of the purposes. Training systems must contribute to meeting the increasingly pressing need for continuous updating of knowledge and skills in the conditions of an increasingly expanded international labor market, while at the same time pursuing greater efficiency and equity. In this context, there is also widespread use, including in the education system, of technologies and information resources, as well as facilitating, through them, access and exchange of information. Electronic resources, online content and virtual educational spaces offer the latest, most diverse information and continuing education opportunities. In recent years, the issues directly related to open data / open educational resources are being widely addressed by the international educational community. At European level, a series of actions were carried out regarding the promotion of open data, in order to improve the quality and access to education, the European Commission elaborating a series of public policy documents that encourage the re-use of information in innovative ways and the design of educational materials under open licenses. Over the last decade, the supply of OER in the world has grown exponentially. However, while there is an increasing variety of subjects, OERs are typically produced in a limited number of languages (mainly in English), and used by certain sectors of education (especially higher education) and specific disciplines.

A host of new sources are currently being pursued throughout the world which push the performance boundaries higher, wider and shorter than thought possible only a few years ago for accelerator based technologies. Various free electron laser configurations open the window to high power, sub-picosecond synchrotron radiation sources over a wide range of wavelengths. Storage ring sources still have some room for improvement within reason, and intense pulsed x-ray sources by Compton scattering are now being experimentally investigated. This talk will outline the scope of these developments as they relate to the production, and possible utilization, of novel sources of radiation based on accelerator technology.

Public space in the city is being continuously contested. The most compelling of these challenges comes from the recent terrorist attacks on cities across the world. While the awareness of the need to ‘design against terrorism’ and a demand for greater safety in public spaces has entered into citizen’s consciousness -given the perception of fear due to recent attacks- drastic security and surveillance measures usually go against a more open and inclusive public realm.

In Brazil and around the world, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) provide valuable public services for society. Through CSOs, people have organized and defended their rights, communities and interests, and can fully exercise their collective potential, often acting in partnership with governments to carry out public policies and/or develop their own projects, financed by the private financing or being self-sucient. Public transparency and availability of quality data are requirements for analyzing the strength and capacity of these organizations. Understanding the distribution of non-governmental organizations across the world and at the national scale, their areas of updating, projects in progress, and their execution capacity, is critical to promote the financing conditions of CSOs, to make it visible and to make it more e↵ective, transparent, and strong. With these goals in mind, we developed the Civil Society Organizations Platform1, an open, free and public on-line portal that provides a wide variety of information on the profile and performance of the population of CSOs in Brazil. Its core mission is to provide data, knowledge, and information on the role played by the almost 400,000 CSOs in activity in Brazil and their cooperation with the public administration in delivering public policies and services. We show how we developed this platform, the integration with several di↵erent databases, the challenges of working with open government data and how we integrated a lot of recent open source technologies in all spheres of system development. The first empirical results are shown and some new features regarding public data are presented.

Probabilistic databases (PDBs) are usually incomplete, e.g., contain only the facts that have been extracted from the Web with high confidence. However, missing facts are often treated as being false, which leads to unintuitive results when querying PDBs. Recently, open-world probabilistic databases (OpenPDBs) were proposed to address this issue by allowing probabilities of unknown facts to take any value from a fixed probability interval. In this paper, we extend OpenPDBs by Datalog± ontologies, under which both upper and lower probabilities of queries become even more informative, enabling us to distinguish queries that were indistinguishable before. We show that the dichotomy between P and PP in (Open)PDBs can be lifted to the case of first-order rewritable positive programs (without negative constraints); and that the problem can become NP^PP-complete, once negative constraints are allowed. We also propose an approximating semantics that circumvents the increase in complexity caused by negative constraints.

This paper uses a transaction-costs framework to link the policymaking process (PMP) and the outer features of public policies in Mexico. It shows how a highly secretive PMP, centralized around the presidency, fashioned nationalist policies that were stable, adaptable, coordinated and private-regarding for the urban-based corporatist pillars of the regime. When growth faltered in the late 1970s, however, this PMP was unable to adapt to economic volatility, although it remained dominant in an increasingly turbulent polity. The paper explains how unified government and corporatist control of the economy made a constitutionally weak president the envy of executives around the world, even at the cost of being unable to enact reforms with short-term costs for the corporatist pillars of the regime. The article also explains why democratization in the 1990s is giving rise to a less centralized and more open PMP that benefits larger shares of the population.

Despite notable progress in reducing global poverty and hunger in recent decades, about one out of nine people in the world suffers from hunger and malnutrition. Stakeholders charged with making decisions pertaining to agricultural production, development priorities, and policies at a region-to-country scale require quantitative and up-to-date information on the types of crops being cultivated, the acreage under cultivation, and crop yields. However, many low- and middle-income countries lack the infrastructure and resources for frequent and extensive agricultural field surveys to obtain this information. Technology supports a change of paradigm. Traditional methods of obtaining agricultural information through field surveys are increasingly being augmented by images of the Earth acquired through sensors placed on satellites. The continued improvement in the resolution of satellite images, the establishment of open-access infrastructure for processing of the images, and the recent revolutionary progress in artificial intelligence make it feasible to obtain the information at low cost and in near-to-real time. In this brief, we discuss the use of satellite images to provide information about agricultural production in low-income countries, and we comment on research challenges and opportunities. We highlight the near-term potential of the methodology in the context of Rwanda, a country in sub-Saharan Africa whose government has recognized early the value of information technology in its strategic planning for food security and sustainability.

Increasingly, both industry and academia, in fields ranging from biology and social sciences to computing and engineering, are driven by data (Provost & Fawcett, 2013; Wixom, et al, 2014); and both commercial success and academic impact are dependent on having access to data. Many organizations collecting data lack the expertise required to process it (Hazen, et al, 2014), and, thus, pursue data sharing with researchers who can extract more value from data they own. For example, a biosciences company may benefit from a specific analysis technique a researcher has developed. At the same time, researchers are always on the search for real-world data sets to demonstrate the effectiveness of their methods. Unfortunately, many data sharing attempts fail, for reasons ranging from legal restrictions on how data can be used—to privacy policies, different cultural norms, and technological barriers. In fact, many data sharing partnerships that are vital to addressing pressing societal challenges in cities, health, energy, and the environment are not being pursued due to such obstacles. Addressing these data sharing challenges requires open, supportive dialogue across many sectors, including technology, policy, industry, and academia. Further, there is a crucial need for well-defined agreements that can be shared among key stakeholders, including researchers, technologists, legal representatives, and technology transfer officers. The Northeast Big Data Innovation Hub (NEBDIH) took an important step in this area with the recent "Enabling Seamless Data Sharing in Industry and Academia" workshop, held at Drexel University September 29-30, 2016. The workshop brought together representatives from these critical stakeholder communities to launch a national dialogue on challenges and opportunities in this complex space.
