We analyze a model in which workers direct their search on and off the job and employer–worker match productivities are private information. Employers can commit neither to post contracts such that wages are a function of tenure nor to disregard counteroffers. In this context, potential employers who do not observe workers' productivity in their current matches use wages as a signal of workers' willingness to switch jobs. In turn, this implies that the wage contracts that employers post in the market for entry jobs—the jobs unemployed workers search for—not only direct job search but also signal future worker mobility. When the costs of creating entry jobs are sufficiently small, the unique equilibrium supports the efficient allocation under full information. When the costs of creating entry jobs are sufficiently large, the efficient equilibrium may break down because match‐specific risk gives rise to a holdup problem in the market for entry jobs. Then the unique equilibrium may fail to reveal match productivities in the market for entry jobs. The nonrevealing equilibrium features wage posting—pooling wage contracts—as well as counteroffers, which eliminates the holdup problem at the cost of distorting worker mobility.

Do labor mobility and co-worker networks contribute to convergence or divergence between regions? Based on the previous literature, labor mobility contributes to knowledge transfer between firms. Therefore, mobility may contribute to decreasing productivity differences, while limited mobility sustains higher differences. The effect of co-worker networks, however, can be two-fold in this process; they transmit information about potential jobs, which may enhance the mobility of workers—even between regions—and this enhanced mobility may contribute to levelling of differences. However, if mobility between regions involves movement costs, co-worker networks may concentrate locally—possibly contributing to the persistence of regional differences. In this paper, we build an agent-based model of labor mobility across firms and regions with knowledge spillovers that reflects key empirical observations on labor markets. We analyze the impact of network information provided about potential employers in this model and find that it contributes to increasing inter-regional mobility, and subsequently, to decreasing regional differences. We also find that both the density of coworker networks, as well as their regional concentrations, decrease if network information is available.

We propose a framework to identify and estimate earnings distributions and worker composition on matched panel data, allowing for two‐sided worker‐firm unobserved heterogeneity and complementarities in earnings. We introduce two models: a static model that allows for nonlinear interactions between workers and firms, and a dynamic model that allows, in addition, for Markovian earnings dynamics and endogenous mobility. We show that this framework nests a number of structural models of wages and worker mobility. We establish identification in short panels, and develop tractable two‐step estimators where firms are classified in a first step. Applying our method to Swedish administrative data, we find that log‐earnings are approximately additive in worker and firm heterogeneity. Our estimates imply the presence of strong sorting patterns between workers and firms, and a small contribution of firms—net of worker composition—to earnings dispersion. In addition, we document that wages have a direct effect on mobility, and that, beyond their dependence on the current firm, earnings after a job move also depend on the previous employer.

Using matched firm-worker data from Danish manufacturing, we observe firm-to-firm worker movements and find that firms that hired workers from more productive firms experience productivity gains one year after the hiring. The productivity gains associated with hiring from more productive firms are equivalent to 0.35 percent per year for an average firm. Surviving a variety of statistical controls, these gains increase with education, tenure, and skill level of new hires, persist for several years after the hiring was done, and remain broadly similar for different industries and measures of productivity. Competing explanations for these gains, knowledge spillovers in particular, are discussed. (JEL D24, J24, J62, L60, O33)

After an introduction about the mobility of workers under the Covid crisis and its tax implications (section 1), the article begins by providing at section 2 a general overview of Art. 15 § 1 which attributes taxing power to the country where the activities are carried out as well as to the country of residence of the worker, creating a potential situation of double taxation. The article goes on at section 3 to provide an overview of the very relevant exception provided by Art. 15 § 2 which spells out the requirements under which the mobile worker is taxable only in the country of residence thereby preventing double taxation and simplifying tax compliance for the mobile worker. The article at section 4 develops a discussion of the so called ‘hiringout of labor’ which is pursued through aggressive tax structures that abuse the benefit of exclusive taxation provided by Art. 15 § 2. The paper after a digression about the wider concept of tax migration and exit taxes (section 5), concludes briefly discussing the impacts that the recent Covid crisis might have had on the system of tax treaty rules about the mobility of workers (section 6). Mobility of workers, migration, tax treaties, hiring-out of labor, aggressive tax strategies, exit taxes, Covid crisis, country of residence, double taxation, country of source

This paper explores the spatial politics of racism and inter-worker competition through a case study of Indigenous employment during the construction of the Voisey’s Bay mine in northern Labrador. Over the course of construction, the building and construction trades unions (BCTUs) sought to restrict the hiring of local Inuit and Innu workers by challenging the legitimacy of place-based entitlements to work. Inuit and Innu workers had preferential access to employment as a result of unresolved land claims and the ensuing Impact and Benefit Agreements (IBA) between the Voisey’s Bay Nickel Company and both the Innu Nation and the Labrador Inuit Association. IBA provisions that local Inuit and Innu be hired preferentially ran counter to the unions’ organizational structures and cultures, which privileged worker mobility and skill. The BCTUs used the geographic incompatibility between the scale of Indigenous claims and that of construction worker organization to justify a competitive approach to unionism and to veil racist portrayals of Innu and Inuit workers. By drawing out the relation between skill, racism and beliefs about entitlements to work, this paper explores how workers selectively use place-based and mobile identities to participate in inter-worker competition, reifying colonial patterns of labour mobility and labour market segmentation.

Abstract We analyze the effect of worker inflows on establishments’ productivity, using German data. Previous studies for other countries have found positive effects of hiring workers from superior (more productive or higher paying) firms. Ranking establishments by their median wage, we find that inflows from inferior establishments seem to increase hiring establishments’ productivity. Further empirical analyses suggest our findings are due to a positive selection of such inflows from their sending establishments. These workers might have to find a better job match in order to advance their careers, an interpretation supported by the finding that the effect is driven by workers with short tenure at their previous employer. Our findings reflect the increasingly assortative pattern of worker mobility in Germany found in a related strand of literature.

This thesis looks at different aspects of workers mobility, firms organization and the political economy of elections. In the first chapter, I analyse—both theoretically and empirically—the effect of an exogenous credit supply shock to the organization of the firm. The understanding of these mechanisms is fundamental to rationalize the real economic consequences of an aggregate negative shock at the micro level and to understand how the organization of the firm can be the target of specific policies that can attenuate the impact of capital shortage on the real economy. The second chapter considers knowledge as a key determinant to the competitiveness and the success of a firm. I start from the idea that firms and their managers acquire knowledge via a variety of different channels, which are often difficult to track down and quantify. By matching employer-employee data with trade data at the firm level-which is itself a novelty in the trade literature the chapter sheds light on the nexus between the export experience acquired by managers in previous firms and their current firm performance. The third chapter embeds labor mobility in multi-country dynamic version of an Eaton and Kortum framework to explain how migration, together with trade, affects the welfare of natives and migrants in different regions in Europe. In the last chapter, I look at the effect of higher turnout on political outcomes. I exploit the exogenous variation in weather conditions on the day of elections and the geography of a country—Italy—to instrument for turnout. Results of the instrumental variable combined with a first difference model explain how a larger political participation affects the electoral outcome.

The relationship between mobility of vested plan participants and the use of reciprocity agreements in multiemployer plans was investigated. The assumption that pension benefit forfeiture retards worker mobility was considered. The assumption that worker mobility is enhanced by benefit preservation is one of the justifications for tax incentives provided retirement plans. Several variables were considered in addition to the use or nonuse of reciprocity agreements; however, none of the variables were found to be significantly related to the turnover rate for vested plan participants in multiemployer plans. The primary conclusion of the research was that the hypothesis that benefit preservation through the use of reciprocity agreements in multiemployer plans is ineffective in increasing turnover for vested plan participants could not be rejected.

The thesis highlights the evidence in the Arab-Gulf region with the Indian migrants to argue that the temporary migration policies hinder the individual’s mobility. International practice and law articulate mobility narrowly as merely the right to “freedom of movement” without also provision to facilitate the choice to settle, which allows states to perpetuate such expedient policies. The work is an inter-disciplinary approach, with mainly a sociological lens and interrogates the implications for policy and international law. It shows that mainly the receiving states’ prolonged non-respect of the migrant’s rights using the “temporary” frame produces limiting conditions and outcomes for all the actors- selected indicators show the systematic exclusion of the migrant in the host society. Five chapters empirically present the “guest worker” in the Gulf who experiences vulnerability at different levels: entrepreneur, trader-patriarch, white-collar worker, blue-collar worker and female migrant. The guest-worker policy practice of the six oil-rich Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries- Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait- is a heuristic example. The GCC region is not a unique case although it might show more severe exclusion, due to the conservative regimes as monarchies and following Islam as the state-religion. Circular migration policies are popular today and states manifest expediency by privileging flexibility and non-integration to evade responsibility for the migrant. The guest-worker is hence, the precarious worker in the global labour market. The structural uncertainty is a factor that mainly also separates the “Gulf-Indian” from the larger non-resident Indian (NRI) population elsewhere

This thesis studies spatial location decisions of firms and workers, and how these interact with local labor market characteristics. The first chapter focuses on firms and explores a novel mechanism that incentivizes firms to locate in denser cities: the role of volatile demand and its interaction with firm productivity. This channel arises since faster hiring conditions in thicker labor markets attract productive firms that can more swiftly downsize or expand in denser cities. The second chapter explores the location decisions of workers and how regional migration is affected by mobility costs, in particular information frictions. This helps shed light on the mechanisms driving skill-biased migration, namely the empirical regularity that high-skilled workers are substantially more mobile than low-skilled workers. The third chapter studies the interaction of affordable housing policies with incentives for labor market participation. A quasi-natural experimental setting enables to analyze a large public housing privatization event in the city of Copenhagen directed towards low-income households, and to compare the impact of subsidized home purchase versus subsidized rental on long-run labor market outcomes

Healthcare providers face numerous challenges in lifting and mobilizing overweight and obese patients, which often lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). To address this, hospitals implement safe patient handling and mobility (SPHM) programs, including mechanical lift equipment, policies, and training. This study surveyed 134 healthcare workers in five Veterans Administration Medical Centers who regularly used SPHM programs. According to findings, handling bariatric patients frequently correlated with higher chronic back pain risk. Injuries occurred when not using powered equipment. Improvements like sufficient time with equipment and clear policies reduced injury likelihood. Equipment was crucial in preventing musculoskeletal injuries and pain. Findings emphasize using powered equipment and updating SPHM programs based on worker feedback for better patient handling practices.

Neck pain is common among occupations like dentistry and office work because workers in these professions tend to hold their necks in static flexion for extended periods of time. But there are few products available to help alleviate workers’ neck pain while still allowing them to carry out their daily tasks in varying environments. For example, office workers can use products like ergonomic chairs and desks to help promote proper posture, but these arrangements restrict workers to workspaces equipped with their necessary equipment and proper setup. Meanwhile, in the medical field, products like loupes, lights, and ergonomic workbenches are available to enhance visibility and reduce workers’ neck flexion angles. But these products have yet to fully eliminate the problem of neck pain especially in occupations like dentistry where static neck flexion is common. Therefore, the goal of this project is to develop a new neck support technology which alleviates neck pain caused by static neck flexion while still allowing workers full mobility and functionality in their workplace. Our design decreases muscle loading on the neck during neck flexion by reducing the moment on the neck using a device which acts as a “headrest” to support the head. In turn, the device redistributes forces to the upper body while still allowing full range of motion to the user. More specifically, our design applies an opposing force to the user’s forehead during neck flexion via a force generator attached to a headband which is attached to the head. The force generator is anchored to the upper body to permit use in varying environments without the need for special equipment or setups. We confirmed our design decreases muscle loading by building a prototype then performing surface electromyography (EMG) testing which showed not just a statistically significant reduction in neck muscle activity using one-way analysis of variance, but more distinctly a unanimous decrease in neck muscle activity during neck flexion for all seven test subjects with an overall average decrease of 60% among all subjects and 80% for certain subjects. Once we confirmed our design’s effectiveness in reducing neck muscle activity during static neck flexion which implied the ability to reduce neck strain, we improved our prototype’s functionality and aesthetics based on test subject feedback, our own observations, and dentists’ comments. Then, we performed workplace testing on two dentists with one dentist’s work focused mainly on hygiene while the other dentist’s work focused mostly on dental procedures. Overall, both dentists offered helpful feedback from different dental field perspectives for future prototype improvements with regards to comfort and functionality. They also provided promising comments regarding their visions for future device use which included training dental students on proper posture and applications in other occupations like office work and surgery.

In this study, we propose an XR (cross reality) dialogue system that transmits an omnidirectional stereoscopic moving viewpoint image of a remote real space and presents it to a local worker with an HMD (Head Mounted Display), and the worker faces the stereoscopic avatar (face part) of the local worker presented with MR glasses. The system is asymmetrical. This system is asymmetric. The position and orientation of the head and eyes measured by the HMD (Vive Pro Eye, HTC) at the local site are transmitted to the remote space, and the avatar of the local worker is shown by the MR glasses (Magic Leap, HoloLens2). The CG object and avatar (the face of the local worker) are shared with the remote 3D real space. This enables the remote worker to see the face of the local worker who has the viewpoint position on the TwinCam Go mobile stereoscopic camera. We conducted an experiment to evaluate the reality of the avatars presented in the MR glasses of the field workers as interactors and the clarity of the instructions for the spatial objects to be discussed. The participants in the experiment were seven university (graduate) students (aged 21-24). The communication time of this system was about 70 ms one way. The G.1010 of ITU-T recommends that the delay between terminals for real-time video communication should be less than 150 ms one way.The experiment participants stood in front of the stereoscopic camera (TwinCam) as remote experiencers, and wore MR glasses to see the avatars of the local experiencers (wearing HMDs). The local operator describes three spatial objects (a cube, a sphere, and a cone) that are displayed 1.7 m closer to the experimental participant from the remote camera.Analysis of variance showed that the reality and clarity of the dialogue increased at the 1% significance level when the avatar's head rotation and eye movements were present. The 3D projection display was higher than 2D at the 5% level of significance. The clarity of the subject improved at the 5% level of significance when there was head rotation and eye movement, but the 3D projection was not significantly different from the 2D.This indicates that the 2D monitor without binocular disparity has a large reading error in the depth direction. Another clue is that the HMD and MR glasses can utilize motion parallax by moving the head even slightly. This makes it possible to reduce the error to less than about half that of a 2D monitor. In this study, we developed a cross reality (XR) dialogue system for mobile remote collaboration. As a result of three kinds of evaluation experiments, it was shown that the clarity of dialogue and the accuracy of depth indication were improved compared with the condition of the conventional 2D video teleconference. This system can also be integrated with the metaverse, and can provide a variety of remote experiences of the world even when mobility is restricted due to current contagious disease. In the future, we will continue to verify and demonstrate the technology necessary for smooth telecommunication.

Job quality, a well-known topic in workforce development circles, is an underutilized but useful lens with which to examine labor market conditions. The Aspen Institute (2020), a long-time advocate for job quality, defines it as “a range of attributes that drive worker experiences: wages, benefits, scheduling, legal rights, equity and inclusion, opportunity to build skills and advance, supportive work environment, and worker voice.” Given the record number of resignations and available job openings, especially in the lower-paid industry sectors, along with popular labor market narratives around the Great R’s (Resignation, Renegotiation, Reshuffle), I wonder to what extent job quality plays a role in the occupational mobility of workers. Occupational mobility includes all potential outcomes an individual has when holding a job. For instance, in addition to the option of changing to another occupation, an individual can remain in that occupation, become unemployed, or leave the labor force. Occupational mobility metrics are an appealing way to explore labor market conditions because they provide a dynamic perspective, while traditional metrics such as unemployment and labor force participation rates tend to be static observations.
