In work aimed at developing methodologies for validation of estimates of the dietary intake of free-living individuals, Bingham and colleagues have examined the use of urinary nitrogen (UN) excretion as an index of protein intake (Bingham & Cummings, 1985; Bingham, 1994; Bingham et al. 1995). The basis of this approach is that in subjects in N equilibrium, N intake is assumed equal to N excretion. Thus, if N excretion is measured it should indicate N and dietary protein intakes. In practice, since most N excretion occurs via the urine, which is relatively simple to collect, Bingham and colleagues examined the relationship between 24 h UN and N intake (DN). They argued that in subjects on typical UK diets UN should bear a fixed relationship to DN, and measured it carefully in a group of subjects. They showed that in a group of eight individuals in which intake and N excretion were measured meticulously, UN was 81% DN (SD 2, range 78–83%). They argued that measurement of this ratio could be used to assess the validity of food intake measurement and concluded ‘In healthy individuals eating normal western diets, 24 h urine N from an 8 day collection verified for its completeness by the PABA check method, should establish urine N to within 81(SD 5)% of the habitual dietary intake, range 70–90%. If the dietary assessment from 18 days of records or 24 h recalls or the diet history falls within these limits, it can be stated that there is no evidence of interference with normal dietary habits, or of reporting errors….’ (Bingham & Cummings, 1985).

This article explores the use of an electronic FORUM in a social work diversity class as a way to increase and enhance outside discussions related to contemporary diversity issues. A total of 45 students from two different BSW programs participated in the FORUM. Students were encouraged to remain anonymous during the discussions to enhance the opportunity for honest dialogue. A five-point Likert scale was developed to measure students' perceptions about whether or not their participation in the FORUM was personally beneficial and how anonymity affected their responses. Overall, students felt positive about their experience with the electronic FORUM, and appreciated being able to express their opinions openly without fear of reprisal. They also reported an increased awareness about other cultures, customs, and beliefs.

In online discussion forums, users are more motivated to take part in discussions when observing other users’ participation—the effect of social influence among forum users. In this paper, we study how to utilize social influence for increasing the overall forum participation. To this end, we propose a mechanism to maximize user influence and boost participation by displaying forum threads to users. We formally define the participation maximization problem, and show that it is a special instance of the social welfare maximization problem with submodular utility functions and it is NP-hard. However, generic approximation algorithms is impracticable for real-world forums due to time complexity. Thus we design a heuristic algorithm, named Thread Allocation Based on Influence (TABI), to tackle the problem. Through extensive experiments using a dataset from a real-world online forum, we demonstrate that TABI consistently outperforms all other algorithms in maximizing participation. The results of this work demonstrates that current recommender systems can be made more effective by considering future influence propagations. The problem of participation maximization based on influence also opens a new direction in the study of social influence.

Many e-health projects fail to be implemented. We aimed to find a sustainable process of service user and health professional online discussions about e-health to facilitate implementation and identification of needed research. A previously piloted course compared Mental Health participants’ views with publications, identifying ‘quick wins’ and barriers to e-health implementation. This study explored this approach further in eight domains including Health Promotion, Mental Health, and Carers. Courses comprised webinar, 1-week closed discussion forum, and final webinar. Participants discussed 12 e-health topics. Course analysis identified that five out of eight domains ‘worked’. Participation was appreciated and service users influenced health professional thinking. The principle of service user–health professional online discussions to prepare for e-health implementation works for most domains, but the work of participant recruitment and forum management may make other methods, such as Tweetchats or courses hosted by existing forums where service users predominate, easier to sustain in the long term.

The purpose of this investigation was to analyze online discussions about parental leave in relation to the work lives and private lives of new fathers. A netnographic study of nearly 100 discussion threads from a freely accessible online forum for fathers was conducted. Data were coded, sorted, and categorized by qualitative similarities and differences. The results of the study indicate that new fathers seek Internet forums to discuss work-related topics. Parental leave can provoke worries and anxiety related to management and co-worker attitudes which can create concern that they should be back at work. The results are presented in two categories: (a) attitudes expressed by employers and colleagues and (b) leaving work but longing to be back. The phenomenon of parental leave for fathers is more complex than simply “for” or “against” attitudes. Fathers can use Internet forums to discuss their experiences, fears, and anxiety and provide reasonable accommodations for both work and family life.

Students in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) interact with each other and the course staff through online discussion forums. While discussion forums play a central role in MOOCs, they also pose a challenge for instructors. The large number of student posts makes it difficult for an instructor to know where to intervene to answer questions, resolve issues, and provide feedback. In this work, we focus on automatically predicting speech acts in MOOC forum posts. Our speech act categories describe the purpose or function of the post in the ongoing discussion. Specifically, we address three main research questions. First, we investigate whether crowdsourced workers can reliably label MOOC forum posts using our speech act definitions. Second, we investigate whether our speech acts can help predict instructor interventions and assignment completion and performance. Finally, we investigate which types of features (derived from the post content, author, and surrounding context) are most effective for predicting our different speech act categories.

This article aims to analyse the arguments or reasons that participants in Croatian online forum subtopic named ‘Labiaplasty – labia correction’ put forward as motives for opting for a labiaplasty procedure or as a rationale for having the procedure done. The emphasis of the analysis will be on those reasons or arguments that were predicated on functionality (of the vulva). Functionality is understood both in terms of changes in – or the desire to change – specific physical sensations or limitations and in those aspects evident in the psychological, emotional or cognitive effects of thinking about the procedure or the procedure once performed. Given that the analytical part of the work focuses on analysing textual material (the content of posts on the forum), the fundamental methodological basis of this work is a feminist critical discourse analysis. The analysis points to two main conclusions. First, it is necessary to include a broader context in the discussion on labiaplasty. Second, an analysed online forum on labiaplasty functions primarily on supportive principles, and it does not support critical approaches that reveal more general gender inequality aspects.

This paper goes beyond the existing literature and explores the innovative topic of designing criterionreferenced assessment for online discussion forums. There are several benefits of embedding online discussion forums into subjects including engaging students in collaborative learning, and encouraging deeper analysis, critical thinking and reflection. Using the assessment principles of validity, reliability and transparency, this paper offers a range of practical strategies to tutors who plan to develop criterionreferenced assessment as opposed to norm-referenced assessment for online discussion forums, applies the assessment principles in the context of an undergraduate law subject, and exemplars a rubric for an online discussion forum in a work placement subject.

Quality of Life at Work was established in France by the National Interprofessional Agreement signed on 19 June 2013. The concept has yet to be scientifically defined, but ANACT is seeking to make it operational by means of an approach characterized by the consideration of subjectivity at work and its discussion between all levels of company stakeholders. Since the objective is to decide, in a participatory manner, on the actions to be implemented to improve health, well-being and performance at work, the deployment of this QLW approach should be able to draw on the work of activity ergonomics. Research that integrates the analysis of emotions at work into the classic ergonomic intervention approach. At a time when work is being organized to produce services, worker-beneficiary relations are characterized by emotional labor, which has an impact on health, well-being, and performance at work. Moreover, emotions are essentially subjective, and their identification and expression guide our behavior and decisions. In this context, the first study in this thesis will seek to review the scientific literature describing ergonomic intervention methodologies that take account of emotions with a view to deploying QLW. The second study in this thesis will supplement the results of the review by means of a questionnaire survey on QLW actors and practices regarding ANACT's QLW approach, which appears to be underused. The factors that might explain this underutilization will also be studied using the questionnaire. The third and fourth studies of this thesis will be devoted to the deployment of an ergonomic intervention that we have designed based on the ANACT QLW approach and to which we have incorporated the consideration of emotions at work. More specifically, this intervention is a training-action course in the analysis and transformation of activity, structured around several sessions of “work-related discussion forums” (WDFs), the engineering of which is centred on emotions. Finally, the last study in the thesis puts to the test of experimentation the causal relationship between the expression of emotions at work and decision-making. The major contribution of this thesis is a proposal for a new ergonomic intervention approach in activity-based ergonomics, which lends itself to supporting QLW objectives in part. The intervention enables participants to express their experiences at work and their proposals for solutions. It appears to improve psychological capital (efficacy, hope and resilience), modify the empowerment (self-efficacy) and have no effect on work performance measured by the participants' initial intention. The self-efficacy reduction makes it possible to discuss the precautions to be taken before conducting WDF in companies. Indeed, if employees fail to express their concerns to their superiors, their belief in their ability to act may be affected in the long term. Consequently, before carrying out his intervention, the practitioner must ensure that the management is committed to arguing their decision making at the end of the WDF, otherwise the practitioner would have to refuse the intervention. The limitations of this thesis are mainly methodological, since the research methods chosen to conduct our studies did not really enable us to verify the general hypothesis that integrating consideration of emotions into ergonomic intervention made it effective in the context of QLW. The body of work and ideas arising from this thesis therefore constitute a proposal for any practitioner or researcher interested in discussing the subjective experience of work and its consequences for empowerment, health, well-being, and performance at work

This study used a skill theory framework (Fischer & Bidell, 2006) and a microdevelopmental lens to characterize how six grade 8 students' conceptual understanding of conservation of matter changed in the context of a short discussion-based instructional unit. On average, students' conceptual understanding increased significantly, suggesting that a discussion-based approach might be effective in supporting students' learning. The general characteristics of focus students' microdevelopmental pathways were in accordance with those found in other microdevelopmental studies (e.g., Yan & Fischer, 2002), but changes in complexity of misconceptions might be intricately linked to how students learned conservation of matter. The analysis of conversational dimensions suggested that doubting, among other factors, might play an important role in students' learning. This study argues for an integrated microdevelopmental approach that includes conversational dimensions and characterizes changes in the complexity of misconceptions.

The thesis is a study of the early stages of the writing cycle in an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) class at the University of Singapore. The study focuses on a group brainstorming activity prior to the stage of writing the first draft and on the impact of this activity on the students’ first individual drafts. In addition, the study compares two different modes of discussion: face-to-face and online synchronous chat. The comparison is concerned with the interactional patterns of the discussion in the two modes, and with the transfer of content from the discussion to the first written drafts. The use of group brainstorming at the pre-writing stage is a familiar activity in the writing class but researchers have not yet paid much attention to the way in which the ideas generated in the brainstorming activity are transferred to individual written drafts. It is this gap that this dissertation seeks to fill. A question of particular interest is the extent to which knowledge construction in the composition class is accomplished by the individual or by the group. Data were collected from four classes of first-year undergraduate students of Science taught by the researcher. The control group, with 31 members, carried out their brainstorming activity in face-to-face mode, while the experimental group, with 27 members, carried out their brainstorming using a synchronous chat facility. The primary data were the chat scripts, face-to-face transcripts and first writing drafts. Analysis of the discussion data was carried out using a genre-based content analysis model deriving from speech act theory (Sinclair and Coulthard, 1975), rhetorical structure theory (Mann & Thompson 1986, 1988), and more recent work on collaborative writing by Plowman (1993), think-aloud protocols (Smagorinsky, 1991) and collaborative computer-based communication by Garrison and Anderson (2003), among others. The model is used to count the frequency of different ideas according to their rhetorical characteristics in the two conditions (face-to-face and synchronous chat), and to determine whether the ideas were generated by individuals or through group discussion. The analysis then looks at the extent to which the ideas were subsequently reproduced in individual drafts. The frequency analyses are complemented by detailed qualitative analysis of the discussion transcripts and the essays of four students, two from each discussion mode. The results of the analysis suggest that collaborative brainstorming is productive in helping students with the generation and development of ideas for their writing. The findings also suggest that there is a strong link between ownership and use of ideas initiated in the discussion. This tendency is stronger in the chat group than in the face-to-face group. Analysis of the discussion transcripts suggests that this difference is a result of more ideas being initiated in the chat group. In addition to these group differences, the analysis shows that discussion in both modes is characterised by a tendency to seek consensus, with very little argument and negotiation of content. The implications of these findings for the use of group discussion in the writing class are discussed.

Lamma aims to provide a forum for critically understanding the complex ideas, values, social configurations, histories, and material realities in Libya. Recognizing, and insisting on, the urgent need for such a forum, we give attention to as wide a range of disciplines, sources, and approaches as possible, foregrounding especially those which have previously received less scholarly attention. This includes, but is not limited to: anthropology, art, gender, history, linguistics, literature, music, performance studies, politics, religion, and urban studies, in addition to their intersections, their subfields, the places in between, and critical, theoretical, and postcolonial approaches thereto. Lamma is a space where these fields interact and draw from one another, and where scholars and students from inside and outside of Libya gather to redefine and reshape “Libyan Studies”. We believe that access to research is not the privilege of a few but the right of all and that knowledge production should be inclusive. For these reasons the journal takes its name from the Arabic word lamma “a gathering.” The contributions in this second issue help to open up space for interrelated discussions on a variety of topics, almost all largely neglected in the contemporary scholarly study of Libya. The focal point of this issue is the reflective contributions by members of a roundtable discussion “Methods and Sources for a New Generation of Libyan Studies” which took place at the 2020 MESA conference. We also mark the publication of a watershed book on genocide in colonial Libya with a trio of responses. As ever, we believe in the generative power in dialoguing and mixing works of art, literature, and scholarship as we seek to shape and re-shape new discussions on, about, from, and in Libya.

AbstractThis chapter critically evaluates the corpus of writings by Peter van der Veer, a Dutch anthropologist described by Dipesh Chakrabarty as ‘one of the foremost scholars in comparative studies of religion, nationalism, and urban life in Asia’. Divided into three parts, in part one I dwell on van der Veer’s work from 1985 to 1994, discussing his contributions to the study of Hinduism, orientalism and nationalism. In part two, I analyse his works during the second phase, that is, from 1995 to the present. Though diverse, I have arranged the analysis of these works under the overarching category of comparison. The final brief section identifies the style and mode of van der Veer’s interventions, the sine qua non of which I call, after Nietzsche, ‘theorization with a hammer’. In the conclusion, I highlight themes and questions that van der Veer’s works do not squarely address but that gainfully work as analytical enablers of future research.

AbstractThis chapter explores the interface between Islam, social work and the common good within the Muslim minority context of Europe. The ethics-law nexus in Muslim tradition is examined to argue for a transformative Islamic engagement with the secular public space. Literature on Islam and social work is limited to providing basic information about Islam to frontline practitioners. The current inquiry intends to develop an Islamic perspective on social work and wellbeing. Increasing association of Muslims with extremism form negative public perceptions of Islam in Europe. Within this discourse of suspicion, Islam is coded as a cause of public harm and ‘Shariʿa law’ is often associated with human rights violations. This study argues that a critical dialogue among the faith-embedded and secular traditions of social ethics in Europe remains vital to fostering a shared sense of common good. Contemporary discussions on social ethics in Islam are dominated by maqāṣid ash-sharī ʿa (objectives of Islamic law) and fiqh al-ʿaqalliyyāt (Muslim minority law). Whilst the former is purported to be a metaethical discourse and the latter implying a contextualising intent, both operate within strict juristic hermeneutics. Alternatively, this inquiry rethinks Shariʿa as relational ethics and practical wisdom (ḥikma), closer to the concept of phronesis in ancient Greek philosophy, guiding human relations as imagined in Qurʾanic anthropology and its vision of a just society. Shariʿa is framed within Islam’s transformative view of human flourishing, tarbiyya. The notion of relational ethics is further grounded in dialogue with phenomenology-informed discussions on ethics, particularly in the work of Levinas, and Habermas’s ‘theory of communicative action’.

AbstractGiven that most social scientists and cultural analysts study society and social change in one way or another, how conscious are we of the conceptual metaphors that inform the foundations of our work? This chapter directs the analytical gaze to the conceptual metaphors that social scientists and cultural analysts apply—in a largely unconscious manner—when discussing social and cultural phenomena in terms of social structure and social change. The methodological exploration begins from a conceptual-historical perspective, with Skinner’s work as a historian of political science. He found the meaning of a concept to reside in its usage. I compare the Skinnerian method of contextual analysis, which factors in the history of concepts, with the metaphorical method employed by historians of sociological thought such as Richard Harvey Brown. The discussion below addresses the fundamental shift in the imagery of social structure and social change in analysis that brings out the political aspect of conceptual metaphors with reference to how they form and take shape in academic debate, in both theory and practice. Such contextual understanding furnishes tools for a critical examination of the conceptual metaphors in their intellectual, political, and material contexts.

As a socially constructive learning tool, discussion forums remain central to online education. They have continued to evolve in functionality, acquiring ever-increasing usability features. However, development has lagged in providing instructors the means to assess student work in forums. The author submits an overview of his software program that provides instructors with the means to evaluate forum work quickly, easily, and repeatedly. The software accomplishes this by accessing the forums’ underlying database, searching for manifest and latent data, and calculating data associated with an array of metrics. This is a Web-based tool built on Open Source and standards-based languages, providing opportunities to port the program to numerous Learning Management Systems. It is the intention of this author to provide this tool, when completed, for such use as a free, Open Source tool. Interested parties may e-mail the author for progress updates. Currently, however, further work on the project must await the completion of another project, the author’s dissertation.

Abstract At around the time of the National Media Forum, a conversation occurred between Alan McKee and an Indigenous lecturer attached to the Kurongkurl Katitjin unit at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia, where the state newspaper is the West Australian. ‘The West’ is the only daily paper indigenous to that state, and it enjoys one of the highest penetrations (proportion of population who read it) in the world. The paper has a strong investment in its inclusive embrace of all WA citizens. In 1996, the West Australian won the ‘Best print entry’ category in the Louis Johnson Media Awards. The award went to the paper’s Aboriginal Affairs journalist Karen Brown, in recognition of several years’ worth of sensitive and thoughtful work on Aboriginal issues.

This chapter provides an overview of an innovative design for an online doctoral program in educational leadership. The authors begin with an outline of the participatory, progressive pedagogy framework that guides their work with students. They analyze the use of two illustrations that exemplify their pedagogy in an online environment: digital storytelling and Flip Grid, a video-based online discussion forum. The chapter demonstrates the importance of relationships prior to engagement in critical dialogue and pedagogies both online and in person and identifies key principles for online teaching and learning.

This document presents the analysis of a discussion forum used as a learning component in a ‘management information systems’ university course. By reporting on two macro level measures namely, participation and interaction, we seek to understand the occurrence of any collaborative knowledge-building activities/processes and at the same time work towards discourse analysis. Our analysis is based on the qualitative case study approach. Participation and interaction analysis from student usage of the discussion forum provide some insight into their learning and behavior in a virtual environment. Students spent time on reading forum discussions, reflecting and planning their contribution before posting it in the forum. Moreover, their participation behavior throughout the semester follows an s-curve, interestingly, typical in adoption theory studies.

As a Jesuit institution, the mission of our University is "cura personalis" or education of the whole person, and significant emphasis is placed on the Socratic learning which focuses on questions raised between individuals. These interactions: the questions and answers are the basis for developing critical thinking skills that are seminal to Jesuit (Ignatian) pedagogy. Online courses allow us to reach out to a larger audience, and often to those who otherwise cannot enroll in regular classes due to family and/or work place commitments. This case study covers business students enrolled in a core marketing course, in the third year of their program. Data is collected on three different options that were implemented for the on-line discussion forum, which is a requirement for the web based, asynchronous learning course. For the first option there are no prompts for the forum, and students are asked to pose questions in the forum and answer them. For option 2, students are provided a prompt (by the instructor). For option 3, each student must first post a question related to the class topic being covered, and base it on a current business situation taken from a business publication. All students must then respond to two or more questions posed by their classmates. The data collected on the three options relate both to the quality and the quantity of the student discussions via rubrics that are communicated to the students in the syllabus. Analysis of the data using SPSS software supports option 3 as the alternative yielding the best results.

A web forum-based tool for managing user-generated content in engineering design and product development is described. The system is intended to allow a “crowdsourcing” approach, in which large groups perform the work more commonly by individuals. User tests are conducted with an initial implementation, with the system configured in control and “parliamentary” modes. This experiment is done in the setting of a mechanical engineering senior capstone design course. The parliamentary mode is intended to encourage discussion and negotiation among participants, and allows them to design their own work processes. Review of the designs produced together with responses to a survey indicate the system was favorably received, and allowed a group to generate and select concept designs. Future research directions are suggested.

Bedari is a rights based NGO working in Pakistan for promotion and protection of human rights of women and girls. Girls’ Secondary Education is one of the core themes Bedari works on. Bedari believes that education is not only about acquiring a degree or a certificate, it is about the life skills and about knowledge around the rights and the capacity to claim them. Bedari, during the last fifteen years, has supported 1000s of girls to continue their education by enhancing their mobility, helping them strengthen their life skills and asserting their agency. During this, Bedari has gained marvelous understandings of community perspectives and barriers to girls’ education at community and policy levels. Bedari has learnt that a small contribution towards enhancing girls’ mobility not only ensures their access to education, but also contributes in their empowerment, reduces the incidence of child marriages and enables them to deal with gender based violence. // Session Objectives: // Demonstrate how small contributions in girls’ mobility and self-growth through community engagement can empower them and ensures access to education. // Share the good practices of working with government to enhance girls’ secondary education // Showcasing key learning around working for educating girls with disabilities // After a short presentation on the context of Girls’ Education in Pakistan, the moderator will invite the panelists for the discussion. Discussion will be in the form of a talk show. The questions will be around; their experiences (specifically in COVID Context), opportunities to work around inclusion and equity, challenges and their mitigation, and key takeaways. The panelists from different stakeholders including civil society, donor organization and government expert will be a great mix to provide the audience an insight on above mentioned themes from different perspectives. It will provide an opportunity to the participants from different countries to explore the possibilities of replication in their context.

With renewable energy and wind energy in particular becoming mainstream means of energy production, the reliability aspect of wind turbines and their sub-assemblies has become a topic of interest for owners and manufacturers of wind turbines. Operation and Maintenance (O&M) costs account for more than 25% of total costs of onshore wind projects and these costs are even higher for offshore installations. Effective management of O&M costs depends on accurate failure prediction for turbine sub-assemblies. There are numerous models that predict failure times and O&M costs of wind farms. All these models have inputs in the form of reliability parameters. These parameters are usually generated by researchers using field failure data. There are several databases that report the failure data of operating wind turbines and researches use these failure data to generate the reliability parameters through various methods of statistical analysis. However, in order to perform the statistical analysis or use the results of the analysis, one must understand the underlying assumptions of the database along with information about the wind turbine population in the database such as their power rating, age, etc. In this work, we analyze the relevant assumptions and discuss what information is required from a database in order to improve the statistical analysis on wind turbines’ failure data.

National Open University of Nigeria’s (NOUN’s) open courseware has been adjudged a source of dependable open educational resources for students and instructors within and outside the ambit of open and distance learning institutions across Africa and beyond. The development of instructional videos, produced by professionals in every subject area in NOUN has significantly added value to open learning resources. Opening the instructional videos to unrestricted access particularly through social media has been a subject of debate considering the public request and the university’s need to protect the integrity of the videos. Although social media, especially YouTube, house both open and restricted access instructional videos, doubtful sources and questionable contents have made its adoption for open universal education a prolonged challenge. This work surveyed public opinion within and outside Nigeria on how social media could enhance the openness of NOUN’s instructional videos and boost the users’ trust in the contents on social media. Hinging the discussion on Uses and Gratification theoretical analysis, transporting NOUN’s instructional videos to social media was adjudged a welcome development. Substantial empirical deductions from public perceptions of the idea affirmed that the practice would lubricate the public’s interest and confidence in open and distance education.

Skill building for increased employability, relevance at work or for promotion drives continuing education through flexible learning modes such as digital learning. However, digital learning research continues to focus on formal learning institution, where technologies and learners are more sophisticated than in continuing education. Participants demonstrate gendered differences in ability to access and use online tools and platforms, exacerbating marginalization and lack of inclusiveness. In our training sessions, men dominated: the triple roles of women and girls, access to technology and perception of social position resulted in lower levels of participation during plenary, and in ranking of overall. training experience. Subsequent training utilized synchronous and asynchronous innovations- including heavy use of chat, spider web discussion, pairing of participants to brainstorm before joining breakaway groups, integration of WhatsApp and group email for mobile-based assignments and to preview learning material. Assessment of difference in access and participation was based on length of attendance in sessions, use of feedback streams, and post training evaluation. Results indicate that use of multiple approaches positively impacts on attendance and interaction, and leading to higher attainment of learning goals. These findings show that engendering digital learning technologies facilitates inclusion of technologically disadvantaged learners in informal, low-support settings.

Abstract As the current decade opened, the Department faced the need to establish a standards basis for all of its work and the lack of a commonly accepted, standards-based management approach. The one-size-fits-all standards applied to production facilities had proven to be inappropriate for application to the diverse, complex, and sometimes undefined work of the Department’s revised mission. The Department Standards Committee was established as a high level, open marketplace for ideas — a Department-wide forum for discussion and decision. For its technical work, the Committee draws upon teams of voluntary participants from across the complex to provide a broad spectrum of experience and perspective in addressing issues such as cooperative engagement in the identification of Work Smart Standards, stakeholder involvement, and the attributes of effective documentation and implementation. The current expanding application of Work Smart Standards represents the practical results of this innovative effort.

Workplace inclusion is a core component of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Hong Kong. Workplace inclusion points to the need for employers to recognize diversity among employees, to acknowledge their contributions to the work environment and to raise professional standards for the work force. Diversity within a workplace indicates inclusion of persons with different backgrounds as in racial, ethnic, sex, health status, sexual orientation and gender identity. Women are already less represented at senior levels across various business sectors in Hong Kong. Lesbians and bisexual women face a double glass ceiling in the workplace as a result of both their gender and sexual orientation. Funded by Lingnan University’s Innovation and Impact Fund, and in partnership with Interbank Forum and Lesbians in Finance, Prof. Denise Tse-Shang Tang conducted an online survey and two focus groups targeting lesbians and bisexual women working in Hong Kong’s financial and banking industry. The aim of the study is to examine the specific challenges and barriers faced by lesbians and bisexual women in Hong Kong’s financial services industry. We found that only 37% of survey respondents were out at work, with 23% partially out to close colleagues. In other words, there are still key concerns with being out at work. On the issue of a glass ceiling for LGBT+ corporate employees, 18% of the survey respondents agreed and 47% somewhat agreed that such a ceiling exists. When asked whether it is harder for lesbians and bisexual women to come out in the workplace than it is for gay men, 32% agreed and 46% somewhat agreed. 27% agreed and 39% somewhat agreed with the statement that it is difficult for lesbians and bisexual women to climb up the corporate ladder. Other findings pointed to the low visibility of lesbians and bisexual women in corporate settings, lack of mentorship, increased levels of stress and anxiety, and the fear of being judged as both a woman and a lesbian. Masculine-presenting employees face significantly more scrutiny than cisgender female employees. Therefore, even though discussion on diversity and inclusion has been on the agenda for better corporate work environment in Hong Kong, there still remain gaps in raising awareness of lesbian and bisexual women’s issues.

This research report examines the reasons cement used in wells can deteriorate and fail. If the cement fails a leak pathway can form through which fluids can flow outside the well casing from one zone in the well to another and potentially reach the surface. The wells in question in this study are product storage wells, most notably used for natural gas storage, although the discussion can in general apply to any well. A review of general storage well use and construction are the lead in to the work.

The purpose of the work is to determine the specifics of the worldview foundations of bioethics, their structure, nature and essence of man in the context of the “new experience” in the field of biotechnology. Research methods - philosophical and general logical.”New experience” in the field of biotechnology, as a stimulating discussion of anthropological, axiological and social problems, must be guided by the strategy of personal preservation and the methodology of human integrity and have value-worldview attitudes as real prerequisites. In the new ethics, the fundamental principles of two historically established systems - individualism and conciliarism (collectivism) are considered in the form of complement, not contradictory. We are only talking about their ratio and the degree of demand. At the same time, the state and society, and not “personal law”, are of decisive importance.

This paper draws on current research and analyzes participant interactions in a 12-week leadership online training course with students from 14 Latin American countries. The paper systematizes the experience of the Inter-American Institute for Social Development (INDES) and constitutes a case study of an experience in a regional, non-academic online training course. The research concentrates specifically on the effects of and influences on different types of interaction, particularly taking into consideration the intricacies and interrelations of participation, critical thinking, achievement and their relationship to gender. The paper quantifies student-to-student postings in the different online discussion conferences, relates the postings to activity types as well as learning outcomes, and gauges the levels of critical thinking in the postings. The analysis is carried out by gender in order to highlight similarities and differences between male and female participants. Finally, other forms of interaction (student-to-content, interface and, instructor) are briefly analyzed using student reports and surveys. Our results suggest positive influences of interaction for an online course, illustrated by positive correlations between grades for written course work and number of postings in the activity conferences as well as total number of postings in all conferences. Additionally, results also point to certain gender preferences for particular discussion forums, but due to the small sample size, no definitive conclusions could be made.

In a world exposed to uncertainty and upsets, the development of organizational resilience is often proposed to improve performance. Intended as a complement – but also sometimes as a counterpoint – to management approaches based on anticipation and preparedness, resilience-based approaches aim to improve the ability of professionals to react in an opportune manner to extraordinary and unexpected situations. Despite increasing interest for this change in paradigm, few concrete case studies have been documented. The work presented in this document explores the possibilities offered by new training modalities, for and using resilience, which aim to improve the ability of professionals to produce safety in work situations. The work is part of a research project called FOResilience, led by Simon Flandin and Germain Poizat at the University of Geneva, which was partially funded by the FonCSI. Three characteristics of the authors’ approach are worth emphasizing: - They adopt a broad definition of “training”, which includes professional development activities and organizational interventions, with a particular interest for methods that differ from classical classroom-based training, such as crisis exercises, discussion forums, coaching, and collective analysis of work situations. - They are more interested in activities and methods that develop professionals’ ability to interpret ambiguous situations and to act and cooperate in unexpected or critical situations, than in activities that promote a quasi-mechanical execution of a procedure or deployment of a pre-established plan. - They see safety as resulting as much from the daily work activities that develop professionals’ ability to act in appropriate ways in a constantly evolving context, as from the initial safe system design and careful implementation of operating procedures that cover all possible situations. Two families of training/intervention methods are analyzed: - Methods that develop proactivity in routine situations, the daily activities that create conditions which are favourable to safe operations. These include different forms of discussion between professionals that aim to improve the shared understanding of goal conflicts, of the decisions and compromises made, the difficulties encountered (such as procedures that are inappropriate in certain situations) and improvement opportunities. - Methods that encourage reactivity in extraordinary or critical situations and the ability to bounce back after a critical organizational upset. These include various simulation-based methods, such as crisis exercises, though designed to improve the ability of professionals to make sense of and react in appropriate ways to unexpected events, rather than the classical objective of exercises to check correct execution of a predefined plan.

This pilot report is the result of the collective work of representatives from seven (7) education abroad provider organizations and The Forum on Education Abroad’s professional staff that served on Phase I of The Forum on Education Abroad’s Student Risk Task Force during the calendar year 2023. Over the course of 9+ months, the group worked together by discussing their internal systems of incident tracking in painstaking detail in order to reach a mutual understanding and develop a strategy for collecting and reporting data about student risk based on the following questions: What are the categories of incidents that pose significant risk to students’ health, safety, security, and well-being on education abroad programs? How do we define those incidents in a way that will permit us to report our organizations' incidents into a shared dataset in a consistent way? What information about the context and results of those incidents are we able to track and share? How do we define those factors? How can we analyze and interpret our shared incident data to better inform evidence-based practice in education abroad risk management and student preparation and support? United by a shared commitment to student well-being, transparency, and continuous improvement, the Task Force developed definitions and reporting templates, which they piloted with incidents reported by students participating in their education abroad programs between January 1 and June 30, 2023. The methods for data collection and insights into the type, frequency, and context of incidents that occurred during this period are included in the report that follows. The Forum is committed to continuing this initiative and plans to produce a second report, including additional data from the 2023 calendar year, in 2024.

In this paper we analyze the relationship between hot topics in economic development such as global knowledge pipelines (GKP), tacit knowledge (TK) and social capital (SC). In particular, echoing the work of Gertler (2003) and Bathelt et al. (2004) we stress that GKPs are important not only as conveyors of codified knowledge, but also of TK. In this paper, we make two additional operations; the first is extending the concept of TK to include systematically the concept of SC. Traditionally, TK tends to be conceived as individual experiential knowledge based on practice, in a way part of the human capital embodied in the highly-skilled individual expert. We’d rather include here also collective pools of social knowledge otherwise called SC since TK can be created and later transferred by wider communities. In this operation we benefit from Blacklers (2002) typology of knowledge that appropriately includes aspects of localized SC in the form of ‘encultured’ and ‘embedded knowledge’. In the second operation we extend Williams argument (2007) on the richness of migrants’ codified and tacit knowledge; in fact, we assert that TK flows do not rely only upon highly knowledgeable economic agents such as scientists, engineers and top managers, but on a broader spectrum of individual and collective agents that are and/or can be part of competitive GVC/GPN/GKP. This discussion has special importance for local production systems (LPS) such as clusters and districts, where TK flows and SC are transforming dramatically, thus need more thorough theoretical frameworks to represent these changing socioeconomic scenarios, as well as their real constraints and opportunities.

This rapid literature review finds that humanitarian actors responded in a variety of ways to Taliban actions limiting principled aid in the country during the period of their rule (1996-2001). The report is focused on the findings around humanitarian negotiation and the strategy of humanitarian actors in response to Taliban policies limiting women's ability to work for humanitarian organisations or access services. The findings are not intended to imply parallels with the current situation in Afghanistan. Evidence is in the form of a number of evaluations, academic articles and lessons learned papers on negotiating with the Taliban. It discusses the methods of negotiating with the Taliban (e.g. co-ordination, working with the leadership or rank-and-file), the content of negotiations and particularly the question of reaching agreement on women’s rights, as well as humanitarian actors’ negotiating capacity. There is less discussion on the negotiation of specific programmes (e.g. anti-gender-based violence programmes). Due to the different goals and principles of humanitarian actors, as well as different ideas of feasibility, conclusions on the effectiveness of negotiating tactics vary. Strategies therefore cannot be judged as 'successful' without reference to a conception of what is most important in humanitarian programming, and the constraints of the situation. The review highlights lessons on good negotiating practices. The main issue being negotiated was the clash between the Taliban's restrictions on women and humanitarian actors' aim of providing aid to all, including women, according to need. Various strategies were used to persuade the Taliban to consent to principled aid. This review considers aid agency negotiating strategy and tactics, as well as the underlying interests and constraints that may make negotiations more or less successful.
