Wireless communication can provide ubiquitous access to the Internet and more convenience than wired communication. Due to the wide open nature of wireless radio, security over a wireless environment is more complicated. From the initial IEEE 802.11 to IEEE 802.11i, more robust security methods have been adopted to eliminate underlying attacks. IEEE 802.11i is based on the assumption that all participants are honest that they will act as they are expected. But usually it is not true. How to recognize a genuine user, how to keep authentication data safely, and how to prevent dishonest supplicant accessing WLAN are big challenges. Trusted Computing can be used to improve security status of endpoint. Applying Trusted Computing technology can solve these challenges and enhance WLAN security.

Wireless LAN (WLAN) technology is developing rapidly with the help of wireless communication technology and social demand. During the development of WLAN, the security is more and more important, and wireless monitoring and shielding are of prime importance for network security. In this paper, we have explored various security issues of IEEE 802.11 based wireless network and analyzed numerous problems in implementing the wireless monitoring and shielding system. We identify the challenges which monitoring and shielding system needs to be aware of, and then provide a feasible mechanism to avoid those challenges. We implemented an actual wireless LAN monitoring and shielding system on Maemo operating system to monitor wireless network data stream efficiently and solve the security problems of mobile users. More importantly, the system analyzes wireless network protocols efficiently and flexibly, reveals rich information of the IEEE 802.11 protocol such as traffic distribution and different IP connections, and graphically displays later. Moreover, the system running results show that the system has the capability to work stably, and accurately and analyze the wireless protocols efficiently.

Abstract: Technology is making rapid progress and is making many things easier. As the innovative thinking of persons is increasing day-by-day, new methods for wireless networking has been evolved of which our Wi-Fi, (Wireless Fidelity) is a trademark that belongs to the Wi-Fi Alliance. It is name commonly used for the standard of wireless (radio) connection that integrates several protocols and is based on a family of IEEE 802.11 standards (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers is an international organization dedicated to the development of standards in electronic technology). The most famous and the most common today is IEEE 802.11g protocol, which determines the operation of wireless networks. Install Wireless LAN was recommended where the deployment of cable system was Wi-Fi, an acronym for Wireless-Fidelity which is the wireless way to handle networking. The main aim of this paper is wireless networking achieved by Wi-Fi. This paper introduces Wi-Fi technology and states the history of this technology in brief. We then deal with the different ways of wireless networking, connecting wi-fi and with wi-fi security. This paper concludes with the pros and cons of this technology and it’s future.

Nowadays Wireless LAN is playing a more and more important role in network systems. After 1999, in which the IEEE organization published its Wireless Local Network standard 802.11[1], many people saw the advantages of the standard but also the lack of support for multimedia streaming. A lot of research work has been done on the proposed IEEE 802.11e standard draft during the past 4 years. It is supposed to be able to fully support Quality of Service. The final version will be published early in 2004. In my thesis, I propose two possible methods to improve the performance of service differentiation in the MAC layer. The first one is calledPCWA (Practical Contention Window Adjustment). It is a method with which the station finds a best size of its contention window when running the EDCF (Enhanced Distributed Coordination Function) access method. It helps to improve the total system throughput, the jitter and the delay of traffics with different priorities. The second method is called AIPM (Adaptive Initiative Polling Machine). It uses the polling mechanism for differential service, intelligently arranging the polling time to reduce the delay as much as possible, achieving large improvement in performance. This method significantly increases the total system throughput, while the delay and jitter of the traffics are very much small in comparison to EDCF.

Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) based on 802.11 technology were initially conceived with the aim of providing wireless connectivity to client devices in limited areas, such as office buildings, homes, etc. or in places where wires are too expensive to be placed. This ‘anywhere’ connectivity is said to have improved worker’s productivity by allowing one to work flexibly from various places besides one’s desk. Currently we are witnessing the growth of both public and private networks based on WLAN technology. Such hotspots are usually limited to the network owner’s premises such as her office, campus, etc. This limits the total coverage area of this network. It is often not economically feasible for a network access provider to install Access Points at all places that a network user might go. This has become a problem for many network access providers; a sensible solution would be to collectively address the problem by entering into roaming agreements as is already done by most Wide Area Wireless Network providers. Such operator specific roaming agreements can provide nearly continuous coverage over a much wider area such as an entire city. One of the goals of this project was to study potential cost effective technical solutions that provide WLAN access to City of Stockholm’s network based on 802.11 technologies; including evaluation from different technical aspects (e.g., capacity enhancements, improvements in handover latency, etc). Proper deployment and management strategies were also evaluated. Technologies permitting differentiated services for users, enabling provisioning of Voice over Wireless Local Area Network (VoWLAN) services and other interactive services were studied. Technologies for authentication, authorization and accounting were studied. Additionally technical means of providing secure access to the wireless network were investigated. Evaluation of architectures that allow inter-operator roaming were made. Today’s corporate users are increasingly mobile and there is a need to provide secure access to corporate data to these mobile users. The coverage offered by WLAN networks even with large roaming agreements would still have coverage gaps which can be reduced by relying on the 3G networks which are being widely deployed. Virtual Private Network technologies are successfully used for providing secure remote access to data and Mobile IP technology provides application persistence to mobile users even while switching between networks (e.g., WLAN to 3G). There is a need for them to co-exist in order to provide secure, mobile access to data. Such secure mobile access could also be provided without relying on the above, standardised solutions. A goal of this master’s thesis was to evaluate the technical solutions to enable such secure, mobile access to data. Current products were evaluated and a suggestion of suitable products for the City of Stockholm was given. The above solutions together would provide the City of Stockholm with secure wireless network connectivity[.]

Teknologerna för authentication, bemyndigandena och räkenskapen var studier. Ytterligare tekniskt medel av skaffande befästa tillträde till trådlös nätverken var undersöka. Bedömningen av arkitekturen så pass tillåta begrava - operatör ströva var gjord. Idag gemensam förbrukaren är alltmer rörlig och där er en behov till skaffa befästa tillträde till gemensam datan till de här rörlig förbrukaren. The focus of this thesis is on transferring data between mobile devices. It analyzes the resource consumption of using the Wireless LAN interface in some situations, and proposes and evaluates some new applications involving the transfer of voice and data files. Measurements show the high consumption of battery power due to the operation of a wireless network interface, even if it is not “actively” used to transfer data, while the memory consumption of the running applications is very limited. This thesis includes also an application to transfer files between two or more Pocket PCs: it is proposed as an addition to the VoIP application Minisip. Finally I have developed an application in order to explore the possibility to make a voice call by transferring real-time encoded text using UDP and/or RTP streams. This could be used together with speech-to-text and text-to-speech conversion applications at the end points to allow a “voice conversation” even on wireless links with very limited capacity, whereas a standard VoIP conversation would not be affordable.
Fokus i detta examensarbete ligger på överföring av data mellan mobila enheter. Det analyserar resursutnyttjandet vid användande av Wireless LAN-anslutning i några situationer, samt brukar analysen för att föreslå och utvärdera ett antal nya applikationer för överföring av röstsamtal och filer. Mätningar visar den höga konsumtion av batterikraft som anslutning till ett trådlöst nätverk gränsnitt, även då det inte används "aktivt" för dataöverföring, medan de applikationer som använts här behöver bara mycket begränsad minneskapacitet. I detta examensarbete ingår även ett program för överföring av filer mellan två eller flera mobila apparater, föreslaget att ingå i Minisip, en VoIP applikation. Dessutom föreslås och utvärderas en applikation som undersöker möjligheterna att vid röstsamtal överföra realtidskodad text via RTP och/eller UDP stream. Använd tillsammans med en röst-till-text- och text-till-röstomvandling i ändpunkterna möjliggör denna genomförande av röstsamtal även då mycket begränsade trådlösa anslutningar nyttjas.

In recent years, immense effort has been channelled towards the Information and Technological development of rural areas. To support this development, telecommunication networks have been deployed. The availability of these telecommunication networks is expected to improve the way people share ideas and communicate locally and globally, reducing limiting factors like distance through the use of the Internet. The major problem for these networks is that very few of them have managed to stay in operation over long periods of time. One of the major causes of this failure is the lack of proper monitoring and management as, in some cases, administrators are located far away from the network site. Other factors that contribute to the frequent failure of these networks are lack of proper infrastructure, lack of a constant power supply and other environmental issues. A telecommunication network was deployed for the people of Dwesa by the Siyakhula Living Lab project. During this research project, frequent visits were made to the site and network users were informally interviewed in order to gain insight into the network challenges. Based on the challenges, different network monitoring systems and other solutions were deployed on the network. This thesis analyses the problems encountered and presents possible and affordable solutions that were implemented on the network. This was done to improve the network‟s reliability, availability and manageability whilst exploring possible and practical ways in which the connectivity of the deployed telecommunication network can be maintained. The IEEE 802.11b standard is today the only commonly used standard in Europe for fast wireless networks. This makes it possible to connect computers to networks in places where it is not possible to use wires. Examples of such situations are internet access at airports, communication in emergency areas or for military communication. Common for all these situations is that network security is important.

This thesis consists of two different parts. The first part handles the security mechanisms and the second part is an evaluation of the possibilities to use IEEE 802.11b in embedded applications. The part that handles the security includes the security mechanisms found in the standard, flaws in these mechanisms and methods that try to reduce these problems.

The usage of Wireless Local Area Networks is increasing rapidly throughout the world. The technology today is not quality proof for the market’s demands. We want to be able to completely wireless perform our demands, such as confer via video or IP-telephony. This is what we call multimedia real-time traffic. It may be achieved over the physical infrastructure in some areas with good results. The goal of this Master’s Thesis is to analyze the possibilities and give solutions and suggestions to achieve multimedia over the wireless networks, with emphasis on the protocol Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA).

This Master’s Thesis is a theoretical study and the suggested solutions have not been tested in an actual wireless network. Instead they have been tested by computer simulation to give an indication of improvements. Basic configurations are set to the same as in the IEEE 802.11 standard.

Different methods to reach possible improvements of a WLAN are studied, analyzed and simulated. Such methods are: priority, congestion management and multi-channel protocol. Simulations results show how the priority affects the wireless network and how a multi-channel protocol improves the latency and efficiency of the network. The simulation part is concentrated to show improvements of real-time traffic, which is time sensitive. With a multi- channel protocol the network can allow more users, i.e. more traffic. Also, the network will gain improvement in stability.
