The problem of persistent icing on high-voltage line is very serious and cause severe losses. In order to solve the high-voltage line freezing, an automatic anti-icing robot (AAR) of high-voltage transmission line is designed in a new way. In this article, the technologies of take power online (TPO), mechatronics and network group control (NGC) are used in the designs. The automatic anti-icing robot (AAR) can work continuously in all weather and be controlled in large scale. In addition, a de-icing tool is designed specially. In conclusion, the automatic anti-icing robot of high-voltage transmission line can effectively solve the freezing of the high voltage line and has a large value of reference and promotion.

In view of the wire icing field monitoring in the process of the field data acquisition is difficult in the southwest mountainous area in Guizhou, the first generation of the present situation of the system operation reliability is not high, a new generation of automatic field wire icing monitoring system has been developed. The new generation of the system adopts ARM/Linux platform, Ice data can be sent via wireless transmission. With the digital acquisition mode of the System sensor, new system can monitor wire icing state stably, continuously. Data collected by GPS can be sent to the remote server of meteorological department which can provide data support for wire icing forecast. From November 2010 to March 2013, the new generation of wire icing monitoring system was carried out three times field test in Meihuashan,Weining field site test points, Kaiyang weather service stations and Wanshan SAR weather service stations in Guizhou. Results show that the system meets requirement of field site test and have further promotion value in the wire icing test requirements area.

Research on three types of wire icing evolution mechanism is of great significance for ice disaster recognition and prediction. Comprehensive field observations of wire icing were conducted in the winters of 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 at the Lushan Mountain Meteorological Bureau Observatory (elevation 1164.5 m), Jiangxi Province, China, and the ice thickness, weather phenomena, meteorological elements, and fog spectrum were measured. Four icing cases were recorded, in which high ice-producing conditions, such as freezing rain, snow and supercooled fog, occurred. The icing growth and shedding mechanisms in three types of weather (freezing rain, snow, and supercooled fog) were analyzed and compared. Considering mixed ice-producing conditions, the ice thickness was simulated by integrating freezing rain, snow, and supercooled fog icing models, with inputs such as the precipitation rate and wind speed. The average measured icing growth rates in freezing rain, snow, and supercooled fog were 0.4, 0.3, and 0.2 mm h−1, respectively. The correlations between the icing growth rate and both the temperature and the wind speed were stronger in the snow and supercooled fog than in freezing rain. With the decreasing temperature, the icing growth rate increased faster with snow, while that in supercooled fog increased faster as the wind speed increased. In freezing rain, snow, and supercooled fog, the icing growth rates were all positively correlated with the ice thickness, with correlation coefficients of 0.55, 0.67, and 0.79, respectively. Ice was shed when the temperature remained below 0 °C, the wind speed fell to 2.7 m s−1, and the fog liquid water content fell to 0.036 g m−3 in supercooled fog, and when the solar radiation increased and the temperature exceeded 0 °C in freezing rain. The average sticking efficiency of the wire to snow was 0.03; its variation range was 0.01–0.10. The integrated model can simulate the changes in actual ice thickness well.

Overhead transmission line icing is one of the main factors affecting safety and reliability of power grid. This paper proposed an excitation deicing method of iced wire and theoretically revealed the ice removal mechanism under displacement excitation conditions, by taking the LGJ-70/10 glaze icing wire as the 3D model and analyzing and studying its dynamic response under the effect of displacement excitation. The simulation results show that the stress of wire icing area is enlarged with the increase of excitation displacement and frequency. Through the comparison of the compression strength experimental results on a series of different iced wires in low temperature environment, the authors found out that the stress generated from the wire icing area is greater than the crushing strength of the ice within the scope of the calculation parameters, which proved the validity and the feasibility of the method, and finally the suitable excitation displacement is determined. Following studies show that, as far as possible, it is necessary to reduce the incentive displacement and also to select the appropriate constraint length in order to avoid the line jumping that may be caused by large span ice shedding.

High voltage overhead line icing thickness directly affects the safety operation of transmission lines, how to realize line icing monitoring has been a hot research issue in recent years, the continuous up and downhill terrain transmission line is regarded as the main research object, according to the wire suspension point inclination angle and insulator strings offset angle the detection method of calculating line icing thickness was proposed, based on the inclination angle and the inclination of wire suspension insulator icing thickness calculation mathematical model was developed, simulation research was conducted with MATLAB GUI interface, the efficiency of this method for line icing thickness detection is proved.

To overcome the problem of the de-icing for high-voltage wire which is nowadays done artificially and dangerously, a kind of impact type de-icing device was designed in this paper. A cam and de-icing tool are designed specially for the device. The device can conduct deicing operation automatically and realize the automatic reciprocating walking on the transmission line. In conclusion, the impact type de-icing device for transmission line can effectively solve the problem of the ice coating on the transmission line and has a large value of reference and promotion.

Safety considerations involving `icing-up' with solid air of the sample space of top-loading cryostat equipment are discussed, where uncontrolled de-icing may cause a flash-to-gas, leading to trapped volumes being placed under high pressure. Methods of prevention and resolution of freeze-ups are elaborated, and a case is made for using a helium leak detector as part of sample changing and a heating wire wrapped around the sample stick for de-icing.

e16140 Background: Oxaliplatin continues to be the standard of care in the adjuvant and palliative setting in colorectal cancer (CRC). Although effective in CRC treatment, it is associated with a high risk of chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), which can debilitate the patient, prevent completion of care, and deteriorate their quality of life. Methods: Colontown is a Facebook-based CRC patient and caregiver support, education and advocacy group. Live Wire, a Colontown neighborhood that was formed in 2018 to help members manage CIPN, consists of over 700 CRC patients. One member of this group applied ice on hands and feet (‘icing’) during oxaliplatin infusion to limit exposure to chemotherapy via cold-induced vasoconstriction. The member was able to prevent CIPN, gaining the attention of the entire group. Results: Subsequently, popularization of icing occurred, as administrators communicated patient experiences and relayed published results on the effect of oral icing to patients. Several Colontown members voluntarily tried it during their chemotherapy, and reported successful outcomes. Live Wire created an “icing protocol” and distributed it to patients, oncologists, and care teams, both in-person and on social media (sm). Conclusions: This real-world example highlights the role of educated patient advocates on sm. Working with these groups directly can provide insights for the medical community on measures patients can do to prevent chemotherapy-associated side effects. The limited publications on icing to prevent CIPN, although promising, have not been enough to make it a recommended standard practice. Meanwhile, voluntary participation using icing for CIPN is growing in Colontown. At this time, Colontown is discussing with oncologists and cancer centers the potential of creating a clinical trial to verify the efficacy icing has during oxaliplatin infusion as a strategy to counter CIPN. Our hope is that this patient-informed icing protocol will be able to guide the design of a clinical trial on icing. Furthermore, with this “experiment”, we hope to illustrate the advantages of serious engagement with a large patient population through the modern use of social media.

This paper introduces several kinds of icing and ice-off simulation method: the equivalent load method, quality method, Támás model method and cell death method. With a large span cross section as an example, using finite element method, established the finite element model of single span icing wire, analyzed the non-uniform ice-off and the even ice-off,the results show that: Non-uniform ice-off dynamic tension is significantly smaller than even ice-off dynamic tension,the smallest dynamic tension is closely related to wire jump amplitude, the greater jump amplitude leads to the smaller dynamic tension,the essence of which is determined by the conductor slack.

In this thesis, commercially available anti-icing fluids were tested. A methodology of assessment was designed for the effect of anti-icing fluids on the rapidity of ice growth and its development over time. These tests were conducted on a device constructed for the purpose of the thesis. The solutions were tested for their effect on the ice adhesion to a contact wire. The effect of the solutions on the tribological behaviour of the collector strip and contact wire was described. The experiments were supplemented by mensuration of the size of the contact angle of the solutions on the copper surface. However, these fluids anti-icing effect is relatively short-term. On the contrary, the thesis shows that even a small amount of anti-icing solution on the surface of the contact wire can help to significantly lower the ice adhesion.

Дисертація присвячена дослідженню проблемних питань, пов'язаних із розробкою інформаційних систем моніторингу стану повітряних ліній в умовах ожеледоутворення, що забезпечують зниження відмов у електропостачанні шляхом надання електротехнічному персоналу завчасної інформації про момент ожеледоутворення. У роботі представлено критичний аналіз існуючих систем моніторингу ожеледоутворення. З метою усунення їх недоліків, запропоновано нові первинний інформативний параметр і вимірювальний перетворювач ожеледоутворення. Для цього вдосконалено нестаціонарну теплову модель ділянки проводу, на основі якої, для заданих умов, досліджено інформативний параметр. Розроблено модель прогнозування динамічного ряду інформативного параметра, що дозволяє оцінити надійність отриманого прогнозу. Проведено необхідні експериментальні дослідження. Обґрунтовано архітектуру системи моніторингу стану повітряних ліній електропередавання. Для технічної реалізації системи моніторингу стану обґрунтовано структуру та будову вимірювального перетворювача блоку збору даних. Розроблено чисельну модель вимірювального перетворювача у програмному комплексі SolidWorks, що поєднує в собі розв'язок гідродинамічної та теплової задач. Також розроблено макет пристрою блоку збору даних системи моніторингу.

The thesis is devoted to the study of problematic issues related to the development of information systems for monitoring the state of overhead power lines in icing conditions, ensuring reduction of failures in the power supply, through the provision of electrical engineering personnel advance information about the icing point. The work presents a critical analysis of existing ice formation monitoring systems. In order to correct their deficiencies, proposed a new primary informative parameter and an ice accretion measuring transducer. To this end, the transient thermal model of the wire section of overhead power lines was improved. And based on this improved model, for the given conditions, an informative parameter was researched. The developed model for forecasting the time series of the informative parameter let to estimate the reliability of the obtained forecast. The necessary experimental studies were carried out. Architecture of the monitoring system of overhead power lines was justified. For the technical implementation of information monitoring system is justified the structure and a design of the measurement transducer of data collection unit. In this work were developed the numerical model in the SolidWorks software package, which combines the solution of the hydrodynamic and thermal problems. Also, was developed the device layout for the data acquisition unit of the monitoring system.

AbstractProduct development involving Artificial Intelligence, ethics and legal risks using the example of safe autonomous vehicles involves a number of challenges. These include dealing with complex traffic situations and reliable image recognition under difficult light and weather conditions, such as rain, snow, backlight, wet road surface, spray/splashing water, icing/contamination of windshield/sensors or road markings that are only partially visible. In order to develop and validate automated vehicles with reasonable expenditure, a first area-wide analysis based on 1.28 million police accident reports was conducted including all police reports in Saxony over 10 years concerning bad weather conditions.Based on this large database, 374 accidents were found with regard to perception limitations for the detailed investigation. These traffic scenarios are relevant for automated driving. They will form a key aspect for future development, validation and testing of machine perception including Artificial Intelligence within automated driving functions.

Slope stabilisation systems with meshes made of high-tensile steel wire have been in use for 20 years and have proven to be reliable systems on loose rock and soil slopes. The optimization of the nailing pattern thanks to the high load bearing capacity of the system permits a reduction of the overall costs and represents an economical solution as well as an ecological solution. The expected service life with regards to corrosion depends, in addition to the corrosion protection used, on the environmental conditions and the corresponding chemical wear. The definition of aggressive corrosive environments for slope stabilisation projects are for example: coastlines by the sea, aggressive ground (low pH-value, sulphur content) and roads with de-icing (salt). If the micro-climatic conditions on site are known, systems made of stainless steel can be installed to counteract the aggressiveness and keep up a long service life. Stainless steel is a steel alloy, with a minimum of 10.5% chromium and less than 1.2% carbon content. The chromium produces a thin layer of oxide on the surface of the steel known as the 'passive layer'. This prevents any further corrosion of the surface. In this contribution the pilot project for stainless steel-based slope stabilisation is presented, which has been installed 14 years ago in an aggressive environment, along the coastline in the UK. It was installed in 2007, with a stainless high-tensile steel wire mesh. Not only does the slope stabilisation mesh have to be made out of stainless steel, the additional components have to present the same protection to avoid the phenomenon of bi-metallic corrosion. Therefore, the nails, spike plates and press claws were as well made of stainless steel. After fourteen years, the slope is still undisturbed and the material in good conditions although exposed constantly to the sea breeze.

Impinging jets are widely used in local enhancement of heat removed from internal passages of gas turbine blades. Arrays of stationary jets are usually impinged on inner surfaces of gas turbine blades exposed to severe thermal/hydrodynamic environment of hot mainstream gases. The current practice is to benefit from the high heat transfer coefficients existing in the immediate vicinity of the jet impingement region on a target wall. The present study shows that a self-oscillating impinging-jet configuration can be extremely beneficial in enhancing the heat removal performance of a conventional stationary impinging jet. In addition to a highly elevated stagnation line Nusselt number, the area coverage of the impingement zone is significantly enlarged because of the sweeping motion of the oscillating coolant jet. When an oscillating jet (Re = 14,000) is impinged on a plate normal to the jet axis (x/d = 24 hole to plate distance), a typical enhancement of Nu number on the stagnation line is shown to be 70 %. The present paper explains detailed fluid dynamics structure of the oscillating jet by using a triple decomposition technique on a crossed hot wire signal. High resolution heat transfer measurements are also presented in a Re number range between 7,500 and 14,000 (24<x/d<60). The current heat transfer enhancement levels achieved suggest that it is possible to implement the present self-oscillating-impinging-jet concept in future gas turbine cooling systems, on rotating disks, in electronic equipment cooling, aircraft de-icing systems and heat exchanger systems.

Polymer composite materials are widely used in aircraft and wind turbine industries due to their high specific stiffness and strength. In this study the concept of an electro-thermal anti-icing system is developed using composite material. Controlling temperature distribution and minimizing energy consumption can be the main benefits of such an anti-icing system. The thermal behavior of a composite material, power consumption and the type of thermal system were characterized for designing the icing mitigation system. Constantan wires as thermal elements were embedded inside fiberglass/epoxy composite laminates, and the thermal characteristics of the system at specific power levels were investigated using thermocouples in a wind tunnel under room temperature and cold room conditions. When applying power, the surface temperature reached 50% of its final steady-state value in 20s. To obtain a relatively uniform temperature distribution and prevent the formation of cold spots on the surface, the maximum distance between the thermal elements was 1cm. The temperature of different points on the surface increased with increasing power, and its trend was the same in room temperature and cold room tests. In cold room tests, a surface temperature above 5°C was reached at the thermal elements and between them at 0.42 W/cm, which is sufficient to prevent ice formation in icing condition. This power did not cause thermal degradation of the composite material.

Droplet impingement is the basic module in both ice accretion and anti-icing numerical calculation. A three dimensional finite volume approach with the capacity of modeling the in-flight droplet impingement on a wide range of subsonic regime is therefore established in this research, using OpenFOAM®. The Eulerian model is applied to estimate the droplet flow field with the same computational grid sets as those of the air flow calculation. The roughness effect caused by ice accretion is considered in the wall function modeling. Thus, the collection efficiency could be investigated for further icing numerical simulations. This approach is validated on both cylinder and sphere benchmark cases. The results are compared with the corresponding experimental and LEWICE (LEWis ICE accretion program) simulation data.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) manages and maintains over 28,000 miles of roadways. Maintenance of the roadways includes pavement repair in the summer as well as snow removal and de-icing in the winter. The prioritization of assets during winter storm events is crucial and impacts travel and safety. The objective of this project was to identify and develop tools INDOT could provide its operators to effectively perform winter operation de-icing activities. This project examined application methods and data to provide analytics and make data-driven decisions for state-wide deployment and operations. Discovery of calibration metrics partnered with fleetwide telematics enabled the development of analytic dashboards that allowed real-time evaluations and adjustments to be made during winter operation activities. These tools will allow the agency to better treat and enhance safety for road users.
