Poplars and willows have been and are important in human history and affairs but they have not garnered the attention and respect their many positive attributes deserve. They can be even more important in the future as human population pressures increase the need for wood, watershed and riparian rehabilitation and protection, environmental monitoring and improvement, carbon sequestration, phytoremediation and basic biological understanding. Whether, and to what degree, poplars and willows achieve their potential will depend on coordinated action that includes systematic collection of biological materials, establishment of an environmental monitoring network based on poplars and willows, creation of a "poplars, willows and water" task force to assess watershed and riparian rehabilitation tasks, enhanced genome research and an advanced, ecosystem-based regulatory framework for poplar and willow systems based on altered genomes. These must be presented in an ecosystem framework with their risks and benefits clearly described. Key words: poplars, willows, utilization, technology, environment

SynopsisPalynological and macrofossil evidence of the former presence and abundance ofSalixspp. in the British Isles is discussed. The occurrence ofSalixremains in archaeological excavations is reviewed. It is concluded that, whereasSalixspp. of shrub and dwarf-shrub habits were abundant during the glacial and late-glacial periods, tall-shrub and tree species have been of only local occurrence during the post-glacial. The wood of these species has been used opportunistically by humans since at least the Neolithic period.

SynopsisThe larger fungi associated with British willows are separated into several groups depending on their resource relationship, trophic state and whether associated with dwarf or arborescent species. Over 150 potentially mycorrhizal taxa have been recorded with willows in Britain, with nearly one-third restricted to arborescent communities. The fungi associated with creeping willow form a distinct category probably reflecting former ecological conditions. While some of the necrotrophic and mycorrhizal fungi are restricted to willows, the saprotrophs are often more widespread and exhibit less specificity.

Willow, a deciduous, woody shrub, is a characteristic and often dominant riparian species (Amlin and Rood 2002) that has been unable to successfully regenerate throughout much of its western range, and Yellowstone National Park (YNP) is no exception (Singer et al. 1994, NRC 2002a). The primary objective of this study was to understand growth and maintenance of established willow stands as a community and as individual species following winter browse. These were based on the premises that (1) different levels of herbivory produce varying levels of compensatory growth (Brookshire et al. 2002), (2) different channel types provide diverse hydrologic conditions for vegetation establishment and maintenance (Patten 1998, Castelli et al. 2000), (3) riparian biodiversity is a function of fluvial dynamics and is increased by the degree of hydrologic connectivity of the system (Amoros and Bornette 2002), and (4) the possibility of willow species being either generalist (showing water source shifts) or specialist (availability doesn't influence water source) (Dawson and Ehleringer 1991, Busch et al. 1992, Schwinning and Ehleringer 2001). Site selection and design, and sampling scheme were designed to evaluate biophysical gradients both within and between sites over time. Gradients of biophysical parameters were quantified throughout the growing season. Regressions were used to identify relationships among physical and biological parameters or characteristics. Vegetative communities were compared using Sorenson's similarity index. Ecosystem functions that influence willow presence on the Northern Range include establishment, browse pressure, and maintenance and resilience or their ability to recover. Establishment of willow was a result of availability of their preferred water source while winter decline was a function of location and herbivore preferential selection. Maintenance and resilience were dominated by soil water use in the early season and groundwater use later in the season but with distinct variations between hydrologic systems. Nutrient availability and hyporheic connectivity, essential to dispersing those nutrients among the plant communities, also may influence growth and resilience of willow plants. However, excess or even "acceptable" levels of only one of the physical factors was not enough alone to control dominant plant growth and response to herbivory.

I detta examensarbete skrivet vid Musikproducentprogrammet på Linköpings Universitet har jag efter litteraturstudier om surroundljud och inspelningsteknik undersökt möjligheterna att spela in konsertframträdanden i 5.1-ljud, ett relativt nytt medium för musikinspelningar som är på stark frammarsch. Målet med examensarbetet är att utröna hur detta nya ljud-format kan appliceras vid återgivning av framföranden på scen och vilka tekniker som i så fall kan användas för att uppnå ett tillfredsställande resultat. Metoden som denna rapport baserats på består av två olika delar, en teorisk del samt ett praktiskt moment för att prova de inhämtade kunskaperna. Den teoretiska delen har bestått av litteraturstudier av både tryckta och elektroniska källor. För att ha ett lämpligt material att arbeta med har jag spelat in en konsert med popbandet Weeping Willows som spelade i Hörsalen i Norrköping den 11 november 2005. Sammanlagt 16 låtar spelades in vid detta inspelningstillfälle, musik som sedan redigerades och mixades med 5.1-ljud med hjälp av ljudredigeringsprogrammet Nuendo 3 från Steinberg. Undersökningen visar att det går att uppnå ett tillfredsställande resultat med inspelningar av konsertinspelningar av populärmusik i surroundljud, men det medför också att betydligt fler ljudkanaler behöver hanteras på lämplig inspelningsutrustning, jämfört med stereoinspelningar. Konsertinspelningar i surroundljud ställer högre krav på lokalens akustiska egenskaper, eftersom dessa framkommer tydligare vid återgivning. Kraven ökar också på monitorsystemet vid redigering och mixning av det inspelade materialet för att uppnå en korrekt återgivning hos slutanvändaren.
In this essay I have made research concerning the possibilities to record live concerts of popular music in 5.1 surround sound, which is a rather new media for musical recordings. The purpose of the study is to find out how this new format can be applied when reproducing live performances and which techniques that can be used to achieve pleasing results. The method which this essay is based on is divided into two parts, a theoretical part and an empirical project. The theoretical work has been literature studies of both printed and electronic sources. The project I have made to acquire some proper working material were a recording of a live concert by Swedish band Weeping Willows, which made a performance in Norrköping on the 11 of November 2005. Sixteen songs were recorded at this concert, which later were edited and mixed in 5.1 surround sound. The result of the study shows that it is possible to achieve good results when recording live performances in surround sound but it also means that more audio channels have to be handled on suitable recording equipment compared to stereo recordings. Recording of live concerts in surround sound also means higher demands of the locations acoustical qualities, since they are more noticeable when reproducing the recording in surround sound. Cottonwoods (Populus sp.) and willows (Salix sp.) are generally limited to riparian landscapes in semi-arid regions of western North America. Water availability is a major determining factor for the establishment, growth and survival of these plants. Willows generally occur closer to the stream and at lower elevations than cottonwoods, suggesting reduced drought tolerance and increased flood tolerance. In the present thesis project, three related studies were conducted to investigate this hypothesis. Firstly, tolerable rates of water table decline and the impacts of the corresponding drought stress were investigated by growing cottonwoods and willows under water table decline rates from 0 to 12 cm/d. Willow saplings responded similarly to cottonwood saplings, but willow seedlings were more vulnerable than cottonwood seedlings to rapid rates of water table decline. In the second study, will saplings tolerated elevated water tables of 0 to 7.5 cm below substrate surface and the resulting flood stress for 152 days slightly better than cottonwood saplings. Finally, mature cottonwoods along Willow Creek, Alberta experienced water table decline from 1996 to 1998 due to water pumping in a nearby gravel pit; the water table recovered in 1999. The cottownwoods displayed physiological changes indicating drought stress in 1998 and recovered following restoration of the water table. This confirmed the cottonwoods' reliance on the water table as their primary moisture source. These studies indicate that the spatial separation of willows and cottonwoods may be particularly related to reduced drought tolerance of willows and these display only slightly increased flood tolerance of willos and these display only slightly increased flood tolerances. The studies confirm that both willows and cottonwoods are physiologically dependent on a sufficient riparian water table.

Plantation willows are commonly grown plants which are widely used for energetic purposes that does not correspond completely to its potential. To fully integrate this resource into biorefinery scheme, it is necessary to study optimal conditions of willow bark processing, aimed for separation of bark components, their comprehensive characterization and profitable practical application. Extraction of secondary metabolites is well known approach for bark processing. But the separation of the main cell wall components including lignin from the residual biomass is less studied. In this work plantation residual willow bark after extractives separation by two different solvents (acetone and ethanolwater) was used as a feedstock for Organosolv delignification. Effect of temperature and catalyst used on the yield and properties of lignin isolated from residual bark by ethanol-water treatment was studied. It was possible to obtain pure lignin with high yields (up to 41%) that has the potential to be used for bio-plastic producing. Insoluble residue after delignification was carbohydrate rich (up to 80%) feedstock allowing its practical use for bioethanol producing.

The problem of maneuvering a vehicle through a race course in minimum time requires computation of both longitudinal (brake and throttle) and lateral (steering wheel) control inputs. Unfortunately, solving the resulting nonlinear optimal control problem is typically computationally expensive and infeasible for real-time trajectory planning. This paper presents an iterative algorithm that divides the path generation task into two sequential subproblems that are significantly easier to solve. Given an initial path through the race track, the algorithm runs a forward-backward integration scheme to determine the minimum-time longitudinal speed profile, subject to tire friction constraints. With this speed profile fixed, the algorithm updates the vehicle’s path by solving a convex optimization problem that minimizes the resulting path curvature while staying within track boundaries and obeying affine, time-varying vehicle dynamics constraints. This two-step process is repeated iteratively until the predicted lap time no longer improves. While providing no guarantees of convergence or a globally optimal solution, the approach performs well when tested on the Thunderhill Raceway course in Willows, CA. The lap time reaches a minimum value after only three iterations, with each iteration over the full 5 km race course requiring only thirty seconds of computation time on a laptop computer. The resulting vehicle path and speed profile match very well with a nonlinear gradient descent solution and a path driven by a professional racecar driver, indicating that the proposed method is a viable option for online trajectory planning in the near future.

The analysis of research on biofuels is presented. In connection with the forecast of the depletion of fossil sources for energy production and their adverse effects on the environment, research and practical work on the use of renewable resources for these purposes is being carried out in different countries. Plant biomass, wind, sun, hydro resources, geothermal waters, etc. are considered. According to some data, wood biomass in the European Union from all renewable sources in 2012 was 50%. Among the suppliers of wood biomass in the world, short- cropped plantations of fast-growing tree species (poplars, willows, etc.) are gaining popularity. The European Union has adopted a plan to create 70,000 hectares of such plantations. In the Central Chernozem region of Russia, research on the creation and evaluation of the effectiveness of short- rotation plantations began in the mid-90s of the twentieth century. Studies have shown that on a plantation of Robusta poplar at the age of 4 years, with a 2-year rotation and a planting density of 20 thousand plants per 1 ha, the annual increase in absolutely dry biomass can be 11.5 t/ ha/year. After a long break due to the difficulties of the 1990s, these works were resumed only in 2015-2016. In accordance with the developed program, work has begun on the creation and research of experimental facilities both on the territory of Research Institute of Forest Genetics, Breeding and Biotechnology and on the lands of industrial forest enterprises. The best results on the growth of poplars in the reproductive areas were obtained in the Kulikovsky forestry of the Lipetsk region, where the annual shoots of poplars ‘Voronezh Giant’ and P. trichocarpa at the root-cutting plantation reached an average height of 157-183 cm.

The oil crisis of the last decades of the twentieth century has led researchers to turn their attention to alternative sources of energy, the so-called green energy. One of the genres intensively studied for bi-omass production was the genus Salix. In Europe, in Sweden, were made the first Salix hybrids for short-rotation crops (SRC). Willows are used for wood plantation, cellulose and paper production, in pharma-ceutical industry, for soil phytoremediation, like pioneer species by their role in ecosystem restoration, increasing biodiversity and for biomass production (Berg, 2002). In Romania, willow SRC for biomass production started after 2005. There are about 1500 ha of willow SRC, 400 ha of them are in Banat area. All of these cultures were established with Swedish clones, especially clone Inger. Swedish clones and hybrids registered good results in Sweden and North-West Europe countries with cool, wet climate, but in Romania they have not achieved spectacular results in some areas, such as North-Est Timis county and Oltenia area, the crops being compromised in the first years. In the view of the extension of cultivated areas unsuitable for agriculture, with forestry and energy crops, there are necessary comprehensive studies to find optimal solutions - selection of genotypes to their potential production, but also to be adapted at temperatures over 35ºC and severe drought. A willow breeding program for the biomass production has to be started and a potential genitors collection (local germplasm) sets the stage for the beginning of a science-based breeding program. The collection of potential genitors (39 genotypes, 12 species) was established in the spring of 2015 on the territory of the Experimental Didactical Station belonging to Banat’s University of Agricul-tural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine from Timisoara. The biological material (46 cuttings for each genotype) was planted in double rows 75 cm apart with double rows spaced at 150 cm and an 80 cm in-row spacing. During the growing season was made chemical and mechanical weed control. There were not applied phytosanitary treatments, in order to test the natural resistance of the genotypes. The sprouting capacity and biometric observations were made in an experimental trial with uncut and cutback shoots and biomass was estimated. Following the biometric observations performed biannually and the evaluation of tolerance / re-sistance to diseases and pests, a wide variability was noticed, both interspecific and intraspecific. The quantitative traits varied significantly with genotype and management practice. Large variability was ob-served in terms of survival rate but also in sprouting capacity, maximum height, and diameter. The field trial recommends some genotypes with particularly high production, clone 30 Salix pentandra L. and clone 31 S. triandra L. for crops with short rotation cycle, both in normal soil and climatic conditions and on degraded lands. The most tolerant genotypes both to pests and diseases were belonging to S. rosmarinifolia and S. pentandra. The most sensitive species include genitors from S. fragilis, S.alba and S.purpurea. Tolerance to pests and diseases was dependent on species and origin.

The Manhattan Engineer District previously used the 191-acre Niagara Falls Storage Site (NFSS) in Niagara County, New York, to store radioactive residues and wastes from uranium (U) ore processing. At present, management practices will determine whether enhanced evapotranspiration rates produced by hybridized shrub willow cuttings planted in 2016 will affect groundwater hydrology. Two shrub willow varieties were planted in an approximately one-half acre area to examine growth performance along a U impacted sanitary sewer line. Additionally, control plots will compare the effectiveness of shrub willows to unplanted areas. Observations of the planted area after 18 months showed success of shrub willow growth with increasing biomass. Chemical analysis from tree tissue samples of the field study showed no significant uptake of U or thorium (Th) to date. A greenhouse study conducted in parallel to the field study tested the willows under controlled greenhouse conditions and evaluated their ability to grow and accumulate contaminants under controlled conditions. Results from the greenhouse study demonstrated that U accumulation was minimal. Thus, this study demonstrates that the shrub willows are not accumulators of U or Th, an advantageous characteristic that implies stabilized contaminants in the soil and no translocation of U into the aboveground biomass.
