1.1 My paper entitled ‘The Matching of Assets to Liabilities’ described a new study of the subject of matching. The paper outlined the mathematical framework, showed some calculations, and suggested various applications in the field of actuarial valuation.1.2 Subsequently A. D. Wilkie published a note entitled ‘Portfolio Selection in the Presence of Fixed Liabilities: a Comment on “The Matching of Assets to Liabilities”’. Wilkie's note appears to represent a new extension of portfolio selection theory which enables him to encompass the conventional portfolio theory and to show where my approach to matching fits into the picture.1.3 This paper is in the nature of a reply to that of Wilkie. My objective at the stage of the first draft was to re-examine the matching portfolio, as defined in relation to specified liabilities, in view of the wide range of alternative portfolios which Wilkie has described. The scope of this work progressed well beyond my original plans when I found a most interesting mathematical relationship between the ‘matching portfolios’ described in my earlier paper and the ‘efficient portfolios’ described in Wilkie's.

AbstractA FIMAG Working Party was set up in 1989 to consider the stochastic investment model proposed by A. D. Wilkie, which had been used by a number of actuaries for various purposes, but had not itself been discussed at the Institute. This is the Report of that Working Party. First, the Wilkie model is described. Then the model is reviewed, and alternative types of model are discussed. Possible applications of the model are considered, and the important question of ‘actuarial judgement’ is introduced. Finally the Report looks at possible future developments. In appendices, Clarkson describes a specific alternative model for inflation, and Wilkie describes some experiments with ARCH models. In further appendices possible applications of stochastic investment models to pension funds, to life assurance and to investment management are discussed.

The new series of Financial Times–Actuaries fixed interest indices commenced in 1977 with the first publication in the Financial Times of the British Government Securities Indices. These were described on behalf of the Joint Index and Classification Committee of the Institute and the Faculty in the paper by G. M. Dobbie and A. D. Wilkie, “The F.T.–Actuaries Fixed Interest Indices”, J.I.A. 105, 15 and T.F.A. 36, 203. Subsequent notes in J.I.A. and T.F.A. have given annual reviews, the last, for 1980, appearing in T.F.A. 37, 327. Part 1 of the present note continues the history of the B.G.S. Indices up to the end. of 1984.

The aim of this paper is to use a model office to examine the potential impact of AIDS on non-linked life assurance business in the UK.The subject of AIDS continues to stimulate a large amount of research. The UK actuarial profession has been kept informed by the regular Bulletins [1-5] from the Institute of Actuaries AIDS Working Party (the “IAWP”). Using a model developed by A. D. Wilkie [6], the IAWP examined the possible spread of the infection amongst male homosexuals and produced tables of additional mortality. The most recent Bulletin (No. 4), published in March 1989, updated these projections in the light of new data, and we have based our investigations principally upon these more recent projections.

Nematodes of the genus Cosmocercoides Wilkie, 1930 from Bufo americanus and Deroceras laeve, generally considered to belong to the same species (Cosmocercoides dukae), were compared. Male worms from B. americanus had 20 or 21 rosette papillae per subventral row whereas males from D. laeve had 13 to 14. Worms from toads had numerous simple postanal papillae. Worms from slugs generally lacked such papillae. Worms from the two hosts differed morphometrically and were well separated by discriminant analysis after bias of worm length was removed by analysis of covariance. Differences in isoenzyme migration were detected using starch gel electrophoresis. In cross-transmission experiments, more toads became infected when exposed to larvae of worms from toads than when exposed to larvae of worms from slugs. More slugs became infected when exposed to larvae from slugs than when exposed to larvae from toads. Intensity of mature worms recovered was significantly (p < 0.05) greater (and patent infections developed) when transmission was from toad to toad or from slug to slug than when transmission was from toad to slug or from slug to toad. No patent infections were recorded from toads or slugs exposed to larvae from the unrelated host. The results indicate that worms in toads and slugs are not conspecific. Cosmocercoides variabilis (Harwood, 1930) Travassos, 1931 is resurrected as the name of the species occurring in B. americanus, Cosmoceroides dukae (Holl, 1928) Travassos, 1931 is retained as the name of the species occurring in D. laeve.

ABSTRACT Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of fowl cholera in birds. In a previous study using signature-tagged mutagenesis, we identified a mutant, AL251, which was attenuated for virulence in mice and in the natural chicken host. Sequence analysis indicated that AL251 had an insertional inactivation of the gene waaQPM , encoding a putative heptosyl transferase, required for the addition of heptose to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (M. Harper, J. D. Boyce, I. W. Wilkie, and B. Adler, Infect. Immun. 71:5440-5446, 2003). In the present study, using mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance, we have confirmed the identity of the enzyme encoded by waaQPM as a heptosyl transferase III and demonstrated that the predominant LPS glycoforms isolated from this mutant are severely truncated. Complementation experiments demonstrated that providing a functional waaQPM gene in trans can restore both the LPS to its full length and growth in mice to wild-type levels. Furthermore, we have shown that mutant AL251 is unable to cause fowl cholera in chickens and that the attenuation observed is not due to increased serum sensitivity.

Parodies and travesty texts of Russian journalism of the early 1870s (published in “Iskra” and “Sankt-Peterburgskie Vedomosti”) are considered in the aspect of genre functions, conventions, and elements of the “contract” between the author and the reader. The paper attempts to contextualize the parodies “Cannibals, or people of the sixties” (1871) by D. D. Minaev and “She is a criminal, or not?” (1872) by V. P. Burenin following the changing field of literature and journalism, in particular, a crisis of the polemic novel, growing popularity of actionpacked fiction and mass literature, competition of “thick magazines”, weeklies, and newspapers. Special attention is paid to the editions of two parodies. Minaev’s parody “Cannibals, or people of the sixties” is an anti-nihilistic novel in the carnival space of grotesque and satire. By revealing the unsightly sides of the originals and prototypes, excessive eroticism (against V. Avenarius and V. Krestovsky) and sensational deviance (forcing one to recall A. Pisemsky, N. Leskov and F. Dostoyevsky), indicate the exhaustion of the source material. Burenin’s parody also demonstrates the exhaustion of topical themes and motives. Claiming to be a “follower” of A. Dumas-fils, E. Zola, P. A. Ponson du Terrail, Burenin skillfully parodies both a foreign crime novel (first of all, Wilkie Collins) and domestic examples of the “same” genre (Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Akhsharumov). The parodies under study combine the baroque with the postmodernist aesthetics, making these texts available for further interpretation and commentary.

abstract ‘With Lady Audley’s Secret, Mary Elizabeth Braddon had established herself, alongside Wilkie Collins and Mrs Henry Wood, as one of the ruling triumvirate of ‘sensation novelists’. Aurora Floyd (1862–3), following hot on its heels, achieved almost equal popularity and notoriety. Like Lady Audley, Aurora is a beautiful young woman bigamously married and threatened with exposure by a blackmailer. But in Aurora Floyd, and in many of the novels written in imitation of it, bigamy is little more than a euphemism, a device to enable the heroine, and vicariously the reader, to enjoy the forbidden sweets of adultery without adulterous intentions. Passionate, sometimes violent, Aurora does succeed in enjoying them, her desires scarcely chastened by her disastrous first marriage. She represents a challenge to the mid-Victorian sexual code, and particularly to the feminine ideal of simpering, angelic young ladyhood. P. D. Edward’s introduction evaluates the novel’s leading place among ‘bigamy-novels’ and Braddon’s treatment of the power struggle between the sexes, as well as considering the similarities between the author and her heroine.

This chapter traces the career of Frances E. Willis, the first US female ambassador to have emerged from the career Foreign Service. After earning a PhD in political science, Willis became just the third woman to enter the US Foreign Service (1927) and slowly ascended through the ranks despite blatant sex discrimination. Named by Dwight D. Eisenhower ambassador to Switzerland (1953–1957, a time during which Swiss women could not yet vote) and then Norway (1957–1961), and by John F. Kennedy as ambassador to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka, 1961–1964), Willis served in the Foreign Service for thirty-seven years. While prone to micromanagement (the result of rules mastery adopted as a bureaucratic self-defense practice), Willis received high marks from superiors and host countries alike, even when called upon to promote controversial US policies.

W. D. Weatherford’s long life came to an end February 21, 1970, in Berea, Kentucky.¹ At the time he was living with his son (who by then had become the president of Berea) and his family. A memorial service was held near the college to honor Weatherford, and his funeral took place at the Methodist Church in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Afterward Weatherford was buried in a special plot alongside his wife Julia McRory (who had died in 1957) at the Blue Ridge Assembly. Abstract By definition a universal language is intelligible to everybody, irrespective of their mother tongue. Many learned men of the seventeenth century engaged in plans to construct a semiotic system that would achieve this goal, among them Francis Bacon (1561-1626), Johannes Amos Comenius (1592-1670), Rene Descartes (1596-1650), Athanasius Kircher (1602-80), Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716), and others. In Britain particularly this idea found many adherents, mainly centred around the Royal Society, founded in 1660. Among them were Francis Lodwick (1619-94), George Dalgarno (?1626-87), Samuel Hartlib (d.?1670), and John Wilkins (1614-72).

Анотація:

The purpose of this study is to manufacture a patient-specific phantom containing multiple aneurysms that can be observed and tested to determine the need for interventional treatment. The vasculatures for the phantoms are taken from unhealthy individuals using rotational angiography as part of a stroke study. Different neurovascular sections exhibiting aneurysms from five patients were combined into a single Circle of Willis with 3D modeling software. Physicians and investigators can use this phantom to test treatment options, such as catheter interventions involving stents and coils.

Introdução: A doença de Willis-Ekbom, também conhecida como síndrome das pernas inquietas (SPI), é um distúrbio do movimento caracterizado por uma sensação desagradável nas pernas, que inclui câimbra, formigamento, rigidez muscular e inquietação. Esses sintomas são comumente desencadeados durante o repouso e melhoram com o movimento. A SPI primária é frequente e possui uma forte ligação com fatores genéticos. Já a SPI secundária está associada a doenças ou alterações fisiológicas, como deficiência de ferro, uremia, polineuropatia, artrite reumatoide e, principalmente, a gravidez. A incidência da SPI durante a gravidez é maior nos segundo e terceiro trimestres, com maior risco quando associada à anemia, alterações hormonais e histórico pessoal ou familiar. O diagnóstico da SPI é baseado em critérios que incluem: (1) desejo de mover as extremidades, geralmente acompanhado por desconforto; (2) presença de inquietação motora; (3) piora dos sintomas em repouso, com alívio temporário pelo movimento; e (4) piora dos sintomas no final do dia ou à noite. Objetivo: Avaliar os fatores relacionados ao desenvolvimento da SPI durante a gravidez e seu impacto na vida das gestantes. Fontes de dados: Consultaram-se as bases de dados National Library of Medicine (PubMed) e Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) em 9 de março de 2023, utilizando-se os descritores "Pregnancy" e "Willis-Ekbom Syndrome" com o operador booleano "AND". Seleção de estudos: Incluíram-se artigos publicados entre 2018 e 2023, cujos textos estavam completos e disponíveis gratuitamente. Artigos de revisão de literatura e aqueles que não estavam relacionados ao tema foram excluídos. Após a aplicação dos critérios, foram selecionados 11 artigos. Coleta de dados: Realizou-se a leitura dos artigos selecionados e a correlação dos pontos comuns sobre a SPI abordados nas referências. Resultados: Com base na análise dos resultados, observou-se alta incidência de SPI durante a gravidez, com diferenças entre grupos raciais e étnicos, possivelmente relacionadas à idade e dieta das gestantes. No entanto, a SPI também é prevalente em mulheres não grávidas, especialmente associada à deficiência de ferro e vitamina D. Anemia e histórico pessoal ou familiar são fatores preditivos para o desenvolvimento de SPI durante a gravidez. Embora pouco explorada, a fisiopatologia da SPI parece estar diretamente relacionada à deficiência de ferro e/ou ácido fólico. Estudos recentes no Japão sugerem que o aumento do uso de ácido fólico e/ou ferro por gestantes possa ter reduzido a prevalência de SPI durante a gravidez. O tratamento inicial preferencialmente é não farmacológico, incluindo exercícios de intensidade moderada, yoga e massagem, com o uso de terapia farmacológica em casos em que os sintomas persistem. Observou-se também que a SPI durante a gravidez pode afetar o parto e possivelmente o bem-estar fetal, estando associada a trabalho de parto prolongado ou interrompido e/ou necessidade de cesariana de emergência. Conclusão: A SPI pode ter um impacto adverso no desfecho da gravidez, sendo essencial o diagnóstico precoce para melhorar a qualidade de vida das gestantes e garantir um parto seguro.

Within the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Technology Innovation and Development, the Office of Waste Processing manages a research and development program related to the treatment and disposition of radioactive waste. At the Savannah River (South Carolina) and Hanford (Washington) Sites, approximately 90 million gallons of waste are distributed among 226 storage tanks (grouped or collocated in “tank farms”). This waste may be considered to contain mixed and stratified high activity and low activity constituent waste liquids, salts and sludges that are collectively managed as high level waste (HLW). A large majority of these wastes and associated facilities are unique to the DOE, meaning many of the programs to treat these materials are “first-of-a-kind” and unprecedented in scope and complexity. As a result, the technologies required to disposition these wastes must be developed from basic principles, or require significant reengineering to adapt to DOE’s specific applications. Of particular interest recently, the development of In-tank or At-Tank separation processes have the potential to treat waste with high returns on financial investment. The primary objective associated with In-Tank or At-Tank separation processes is to accelerate waste processing. Insertion of the technologies will (1) maximize available tank space to efficiently support permanent waste disposition including vitrification; (2) treat problematic waste prior to transfer to the primary processing facilities at either site (i.e., Hanford’s Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) or Savannah River’s Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF)); and (3) create a parallel treatment process to shorten the overall treatment duration. This paper will review the status of several of the R&D projects being developed by the U.S. DOE including insertion of the ion exchange (IX) technologies, such as Small Column Ion Exchange (SCIX) at Savannah River. This has the potential to align the salt and sludge processing life cycle, thereby reducing the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) mission by 7 years. Additionally at the Hanford site, problematic waste streams, such as high boehmite and phosphate wastes, could be treated prior to receipt by WTP and thus dramatically improve the capacity of the facility to process HLW. Treatment of boehmite by continuous sludge leaching (CSL) before receipt by WTP will dramatically reduce the process cycle time for the WTP pretreatment facility, wile treatment of posphate will significantly reduce the number of HLW borosilicate glass canisters produced at the WTP. These and other promising technologies will be discussed.

The use of wrist-worn accelerometers to perform assessment of physical activity features and posture recognition, has significantly increased in the last decades, but remains limited in ergonomic contexts. In particular, to our knowledge, no studies employed them to investigate symmetry of use of upper limb (UL) during actual work shifts, even though such information would be useful to identify potentially unbalanced use of dominant and non-dominant limb. In the present study we aimed to estimate intensity and symmetry of use of UL while, at the same time, analyzing the amount of time spent in sedentary behavior in workers engaged in physically demanding and sedentary tasks.2.MethodsTwenty-two full-time workers employed in a metalworking company were recruited for the study and divided into two groups (n=11 each) according to the task they usually performed as follows:1)Machine tools operators, who are required to perform several kinds of machining processes such as cutting, turning, milling, etc.2)Administrative staff, who spend most of their shift time on a desk, in a sitting position using a PC, mouse and keyboard. Upper limb activity was measured for 4 consecutive hours of a regular working shift using two wrist-worn tri-axial accelerometers (Actigraph GT3X-BT, Acticorp Co., USA). The raw accelerations were processed to calculate the following parameters:a) vector magnitude (VM) counts, a composite measure of the accelerometric counts on the three planes of motion;b) Bilateral Magnitude (BLM), which is the sum of the VM values of dominant and non-dominant limb;c) Use Ratio (UR): is the ratio between the minutes of use calculated for the non-dominant and the dominant limb respectively. UR = 1 indicates an equal use of dominant and non-dominant limb, while UR < 1 (>1) indicates longer periods of use for the dominant (non-dominant) limb;d) Magnitude Ratio (MR) is the natural logarithm of the ratio between the VM counts calculated for the non-dominant and the dominant limbs respectively. A value of MR = 0 indicates perfect symmetric use of both limbs in terms of movement intensity. MR < 0 (> 0) denotes higher intensity activity of the dominant (non-dominant) limb;e) Time spent in sedentary (sitting) behaviour calculated according to the procedure proposed by Straczkiewicz et al. (2020)We performed one-way MANCOVA and ANCOVA using the number of steps as covariate because the arm swing associated with walking represents a source of accelerometric counts. The independent variable was the group (i.e. machine tools operator or administrative staff), while the dependent variables were: 1.The three UL activity parameters (i.e., BLM, MR and UR); 2.The time spend in sedentary (sitting) behavior.The level of significance was set at p = 0.05 and the effect of size was assessed using the eta-squared coefficient. Univariate ANOVAs were carried out as a post-hoc test on the adjusted group means.3.ResultsAfter controlling for number of steps, MANCOVA detected a significant main effect of group on UL activity and symmetry parameters [F(3,17) = 5.512; p = 0.008 Wilks’ λ = 0.507; η2 = 0.493]. In particular, the follow-up analysis revealed that machine tool operators performed a more asymmetrical activity in favor of their dominant limb with respect to those engaged in office tasks both in terms of intensity (MR = -0.18 vs. -0.02, p=0.004) and minutes of use (UR = 0.89 vs. 0.99, p=0.001). As regards the sedentary behavior, the ANCOVA revealed that the administrative staff spent significantly longer time in sitting position with respect to machine tools workers (158 minutes vs. 70, p=0.021). This value represents approximately 66% of the monitoring period.4.Discussion and conclusionThe results obtained from the experimental analysis identified the existence of significant asymmetry in the machine tools workers in terms of both duration of UL use and activity intensity. In particular, their markedly higher intensity of use of dominant limb is probably due to the fact that during activities such as cutting, turning, milling, etc. the dominant arm tends to perform dynamic tasks, while the non-dominant is devoted more to stabilizing position by contrasting the forces imposed by the dominant limb. Also, as expected, they spend little time in sitting position (30% of the monitoring period) compared with administrative staff, which perform a typical sedentary work. The findings of the present study, although carried out on a restricted sample in terms of working activities and number of subjects tested, suggest that accelerometer-based data allow discriminating among important features of different job occupations, at the same time highlighting potentially harmful conditions associated with the asymmetrical use of the dominant and non-dominant limbs. This can be extremely important in properly planning suitable ergonomic interventions.
