Several systems integration proposals have been suggested over the years. However these proposals have mainly focused on data integration, not allowing users to take advantage of services offered by Web portals. Most of the mentioned proposals only provide a set of design principles to build integrated systems and lack in suggesting a systematic way of how to develop systems based on the integration architecture they propose. In previous work we have developed PISA (Web Portal Integration Architecture)—a Web portal integration architecture for data and services—and MIDAS-S, a methodological approach for the development of integrated Web portals, built according to PISA. This work shows, by means of a case study, how both proposals fit together integrating Web portals.

Анотація:

The paper presents the approach to Internet knowledge portals design based on ontologies. Internet knowledge portals provide users with access to heterogeneous loosely coupled data and information resources of various subject domains. Using such portals as a single access point greatly simplifies the work with information presented on the Internet. In the case of Internet portals representing engineering subject domains information their environment concentrate not only information resources and data, but also a large number of computing resources and web-services that are used to perform certain calculation tasks of engineering subject domains. The ontological approach to Internet knowledge portals design allows to represent and integrate heterogeneous information and computing resources in the process of such portals data and knowledge structuring and systematizing. It is proposed to use ontology as portal knowledge representation model. The Internet knowledge portal general ontology is represented by a system of four interconnected components. The structure of such a system is described, the basic elements of its ontologies, as well as the relations between them, are distinguished. The ontology elements are formalized that allows to organize and optimize semantic search through the Internet knowledge portals information space.

Анотація:

Research portals are a means to present, discuss, and advance scientific findings. They are web-based knowledge management tools for research communities. Research portals foster collaboration among a community of scientists, research funders, and political decision-makers. However, research communities might not possess the knowledge and experience required to design a research portal. The authors support them by analyzing the status quo of existing portals and providing respective improvement perspectives. The authors ask what typical characteristics of such portals are and how these characteristics can be used to evaluate the advancement of individual portals and they seek to distinguish classes of differently advanced research portals and determine their status quo. The authors’ research is based on a systematic web search, during which the authors identify 813 relevant research portals. Following a multi-method approach, they assign each research portal a previously distinguished class of advancement. The authors conclude that research portals generally only offer basic functionality and discuss functionality that is underrepresented in this pool of analyzed research portals and elaborate on improvement perspectives in 11 feature dimensions.

Анотація:

A large number of university web portal's content and design do not meet today's students' expectations and requirements. To address students' expectations, universities spend millions on the redesign and maintenance of their web portals which students say are inadequate and lack basic services. To this end, this study explored the factors that influence students' acceptance of university web portals. It proposed an extension of Davis's (1989) Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) by adding three user related external constructs in it. A total of 429 usable responses were collected from university students through a web survey. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results of the study revealed that website quality, perceived self-efficacy, and facilitating conditions were significant in explaining students' use of university web portals and therefore, indicated that the extended TAM has sufficient explanatory power to explain students' usage of university web portals. In conclusion, important theoretical and practical implications of the results are presented for both researchers and practitioners.

Анотація:

Redesigning of the whole portal or some of its webpages does not always lead to a positive result despite the designers' expectations. Nowadays the opinion on how to carry out the redesign of web portals varies. A web portal being in service and in a wide use, a sudden change in its design may result in a drop of the number of clients. The usability evaluation has become important to make a decision on what design of webpages to choose. The paper proposes a method to redesign of commercial web-portals which is based on usability evaluation of some webpages. The evaluation can be undertaken by surveying the staff of the business organization where such a web portal is being developed. The hierarchy made of the Choquet integrals aggregates the results of the questionnaire and allows for the interdependencies between individual metrics of usability. Then, a decision about the redesign of a certain webpage is made on the basis of the aggregated results. The described experiment has shown a great impact of this innovative approach.

We describe best practices for providing convenient, high-speed, secure access to large data via research data portals. We capture these best practices in a new design pattern, the Modern Research Data Portal, that disaggregates the traditional monolithic web-based data portal to achieve orders-of-magnitude increases in data transfer performance, support new deployment architectures that decouple control logic from data storage, and reduce development and operations costs. We introduce the design pattern; explain how it leverages high-performance data enclaves and cloud-based data management services; review representative examples at research laboratories and universities, including both experimental facilities and supercomputer sites; describe how to leverage Python APIs for authentication, authorization, data transfer, and data sharing; and use coding examples to demonstrate how these APIs can be used to implement a range of research data portal capabilities. Sample code at a companion web site, https://docs.globus.org/mrdp, provides application skeletons that readers can adapt to realize their own research data portals.

Subject. This article focuses on the investment web portal as a necessary communication tool and a way to govern the investment attractiveness of the region. Objectives. The article aims to conduct a comprehensive study of the problem of promoting regional investment web portals in the information environment. Methods. For the study, I used the methods of logical and statistical analyses, induction and deduction, comparison, and generalization. Results. The article describes the advantages of Internet portals of investment projects and the peculiarities of using Social Media Marketing (SMM) within public structures. It highlights the function of social networks in the process of interacting with the audience. Conclusions. Social Media Marketing is an integral tool for engaging with the investment community and one of the most effective ways to promote a regional investment web portal. The presented original methodology can be used by regional investment portals to analyze interaction with the audience and design a development strategy.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report on the level of government web portal resource development, impediments to progress in electronic government practices, and areas that require improvement in 19 Latin American countries. Design/methodology/approach A comparative study was carried out between March and May of 2012, based on a method combining heuristic usability analysis with an automatic web portal accessibility test. Findings The results suggest that Latin American government web portals do not fully meet international accessibility guidelines and that multidirectional communication and participation mechanisms lack diversity. Only functionalities related to usability presented positive scores, but with shortcomings in terms of security. Originality/value Extensive literature is available on the development of electronic government policies in Latin America. This study falls within that tradition but, in addition, offers a new perspective by examining the features of web portals, which ultimately aids the calibration of the results of policy implementation. The data obtained are useful for web developers, ICT policy designers and the entire community of actors involved in developing electronic government programs.

The Integrated Mobile Alert System (IMAS) is a mobile device message alerting system that provides a means for people to stay connected and receive information in a modality that is constantly available to them. The focus of this research is to develop a proof of concept for the common data format and common platform aspect of the proposed architecture. This project concentrates on the design characteristics of the IMAS-portal and server-side database. The thesis determines a way to aggregate, integrate, and sort different message formats in order to be easily displayed on a variety of mobile devices according to user profiles. It demonstrates that a web-portal written in PHP script supported by a relational database is a good configuration for IMAS. Additionally, a proof of concept system that converts messages into disseminated mobile alerts is presented. This thesis marks the founding steps in developing the IMAS.

Web portals are considered “gateways” to the World Wide Web. These portals are becoming very popular entry points to the Web by offering important services such as email, news, weather reports, course notes and general information. In addition, some portal sites allow users the option of customising the site according to their personal interests. However, disabled and elderly people encounter many accessibility and usability barriers while accessing web portals. A preliminary review of a university portal was conducted to identify some of these accessibility problems. This treatise presents an overview of the processes to be followed when conducting an accessibility and usability evaluation. In addition, it mentions some guidelines to be considered when specifically designing portals for use by many different users from varying backgrounds.

Internet portals are increasingly becoming a primary source of information. A portal is a gateway to information on the Internet or a hub from which users may locate relevant information (Strauss, 2000). Because university Web sites have various user classes, universities are beginning to adopt the portal concept for their Web sites. The study conducted aimed to determine the effect of tailoring information content and presentation style on a university Web portal. User ratings of information design on three metrics and user task performance measures of time and errors were compared for four prototypes. Three prototypes were built on the basis of user requirements and two Human-computer Interaction (HCI) theories and one was a replica of an existing academic information portal. The three metrics were derived from the HCI theories. The contributions of the study are a determination of user acceptance of and user performance with the tailored presentation styles and three metrics derived from HCI theories that can be used to compare alternative information presentation styles for portals. An important contribution is the remote data collection technique that was used in the study and a time-stamping technique that recorded clicks on hyperlinks.

This research is to propose a Web services based framework for e-learning portal systems designed to present a flexible integration model and to make the e-learning environment intelligent and adaptive to each individual learner. It is very important that all the learning components and applications are clearly defined, effectively discovered and loosely coupled. Web services and Portals provide an essential deployment environment to realize collaborative e-learning environment by facilitating efficient communication of components and applications. Given the proposed framework, instructor and learner will be able to use their learning objects or services based on portal (collaboration environment) universally anywhere, any time through common communication protocols (HTTP, SOAP). The key values of interoperability and accessibility in the proposed architecture enhance the future collaborative e-learning portal systems to communicate more efficiently and to share data more easily. A prototype of the proposed system is designed and implemented in a J2EE (Java 2 Enterprise Edition) combined with multi-channel, using WSRP (Web Service for Remote Portlet) for building essential Web services and for parsing SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) messages on lightweight platforms. The implementation is a successful demonstration that learning services can be easily accessed by portlet through standard Web services interface. Another implementation about role base access control is presented. An internationalization solution (I18N, L10N) based web-service e-learning portal system is successfully accomplished in this implementation.

The complexity in the construction industry with multiple stakeholdersinvolved during a project create a demand for good communication. Theinformation channel between contractor and customer with relevant andupdated information is important for success in a project. Manual handlingof the information can lead to loss of important information due to thehuman factor. This master thesis deals with the development of a prototype for a customerportal for the construction division at BDX Företagen AB. The aim of theproject was to create a user-friendly and intuitive customer portal to eliminateadministrative burdensome tasks. The project followed an activity-centered approach with a base in designthinking with the phases planning, inspiration, ideation and prototype & test.The phases were iterative and consisted of brainstorming, co-designworkshop, user testing and prototyping. The focus was to understand theuser’s needs in relation to the functions that needed to exist for the system towork optimal. Users were involved during the project from creating arequirement specification to user test of the final prototype. Further toachieve this, relevant theories in user experience, design, gestalt and layoutprinciples were researched in the literature review. The project resulted in two user-friendly and intuitive prototypes for acustomer portal, a mobile and computer version for the different screen size.The customer portal includes relevant project information, ordering of a newproject and changing settings for the user. The interface is associated withBDX and their colours but in a new setting.
Komplexiteten inom infrastrukturbranschen med flertalet intressenterinvolverade under ett projekt skapar ett behov för god kommunikation.Informationsflödet mellan entreprenör och kund, med relevant ochuppdaterad information är viktig för att lyckas i ett projekt. Manuell hanteringav informationsflödet kan skapa misstag som leder till att viktig informationgår förlorad på grund av den mänskliga faktorn. Examensarbetet behandlar utvecklingen av en prototyp för en kundportal åtdivision entreprenad hos BDX Företagen AB. Syftet med projektet var attskapa en användarvänlig och intuitiv kundportal för att minimeraadministrativt tunga uppgifter. Projektet följde aktivitetscentrerad design med bas i design thinkinginnehållande faserna planering, inspiration, idegenerering och prototyp &test. Faserna var iterativa och bestod av metoder som brainstorming, codesignworkshop,användartester och skapandet av prototyper. Fokus låg på attförstå användarens behov i förhållande till de funktioner som var tvungen attexistera för optimal funktion av systemet. Användarna var involverade underhela projektet från skapande av en behovsspecifikation till användartestet avden slutliga prototypen. För att uppnå detta användes relevanta teorier inomanvändarupplevelse, design, gestalt och layout principer ilitteraturundersökningen. Projektet resulterade i två användarvänliga och intuitiva prototyper för enkundportal skapade för dator och mobils skärmstorlek. Kundportalen bestårav relevant projektspecifik information, beställning av ett nytt projekt samtändring av användarinställningar. Gränssnittet är associerat med BDX ochderas färger

Анотація:

The objective of this thesis project focuses on designing and implementing a game portal for web-based motion games whilst achieving high usability. Many systems lack the creativ- ity to design web-usability with all the technical requirements and this study addresses this problem by implementing a front-end system that uses agile methodology with competitive analysis and consumes the back-end system with RESTful architecture by using AngularJS web application framework. Users were involved in the implementation process repetitively and the usability test was done with think aloud protocol and System Usability Scale which involves a questionnaire on paper. It was concluded that a clear and interactive navigation bar made it very useful for users to hover through the website. Having the notifications fixed on the upper right side of the navigation bar made them easily perceived by the users and including all user-related functions under username helped the user reach them easily. It was also concluded that modal view prevented page reloading by gathering users, attention at one point. Adding visual feedback functions such as highlighting the hovered or clicked link were appreciated by the users.

Este trabalho, na área das interfaces Web, foi motivado pelo défice social de serviços de apoio ao Ensino Superior, como principais ferramentas de gestão de conteúdos educativos. O estudo efectuado, sobre o entendimento do novo software social, revelou a sua complexidade, resultado da teia de influências comerciais e tecnológicas que o condicionam, em especial à própria Web, enquanto suporte dessas actividades. Foram estudadas as principais ferramentas que proporcionaram o desenvolvimento de uma nova esfera social na Web, aquilo a que designamos por Web 2.0, tendo-se focalizado este projecto no âmbito do Design de Interacção, na definição do domínio behavioural e constructional de uma ferramenta que apoia o ensino e aprendizagem para o Ensino Superior. Dada a complexidade do projecto, optou-se por dividi-lo em subprojectos. Fazem parte desta dissertação a definição de um cenário gráfico integrador no âmbito geral do projecto, assim como a interlocução dos processos de construção de mensagens visuais, definidos pelos outros domínios do projecto. Desde a sua origem, o projecto denominado como Sapo Campus recebe influência de uma visão estratégica comercial e institucional que definiu um modelo estrutural já previamente desenvolvido. Nesse sentido, a filosofia desta dissertação passou por sistematizar, na definição conceptual das interfaces, a identidade e linguagem dos serviços do SAPO, que servem de suporte a alguns dos serviços da plataforma Sapo Campus. Definiu-se que o desenho de uma nova ordem identitária dos serviços abrange três domínios: o domínio gráfico, o estrutural e o de navegação. Estas três áreas serviram de campos de abordagem ao projecto e também de campos de análise aos próprios serviços do SAPO. Neste documento, descreve-se ainda uma narrativa sobre um desenvolvimento conceptual da ordem pensável, já limitado por uma predefinição estrutural, até aos resultados de uma ordem possível, consequentes da implementação e dos constrangimentos organizacionais, agregados à complexidade de um projecto deste nível. Também sobre os três domínios definidos inicialmente, foi realizada a avaliação das interfaces com uma amostra reduzida de participantes, que definem um perfil de literacia visual acima da média dos grandes utilizadores do serviço permitindo motivar e definir novas possibilidades de desenvolvimentos futuros. ABSTRACT: This work on the area of Web interfaces was motivated by the limited number of available support services to higher education as main management tools of educational contents. The study carried out about the understanding of the new social software proved complex due to the series of commercial and technological influences, which restrict it, specially the Web, as a means of support for these activities. The main tools, which provided the development of a new social sphere on the net were studied. This sphere, named Web 2.0, led to focus this project on the scope of Interaction Design in the definition of the behavioural and constructional domain of a tool, which supports both teaching and learning at the higher education. Due to its complexity, we opted to divide the project into subprojects. To this dissertation belong both the definition of integrator graphic scenery within the general scope of the project and the interlocution of construction processes of visual messages, defined by other areas in the project. Since its foundation the project named Sapo Campus has received influence by a commercial and institutional strategic view, which defined a structural model previously developed. In this way, the philosophy of this dissertation in the conceptual definition of interfaces focused on systematizing the identity and language of SAPO services, which are used as means of support to some services of Sapo Campus platform. The design of a new identity order of services comprises three domains: the graphic, structural and navigation. These three areas served both as approach fields to the project and as analysis fields to SAPO services. In this document, besides developing the referred topics, we describe above all a narrative about the conceptual development from the thoughtful order, already limited by a structural predefinition, to the possible order, consequent of the implementation and of the organizational constraints linked to the complexity of such a project. Still about the three domains initially defined, we made the evaluation of the interfaces basing on a limited sample of participants who define the profile of visual literacy above the average of most users of the service, enabling the motivation and definitions of new possibilities toward future developments.

Geralmente, o título de uma obra busca traduzir sua principal idéia, identificando sua contribuição para o enriquecimento da teoria e dos conhecimentos do leitor. Esta foi a intenção ao nomear esta pesquisa por Webvertise: virtualização, interatividade e tridimensionalidade nos formatos publicitários dos maiores portais web do Brasil . De primeira, destacamos que estaremos analisando o campo da publicidade veiculada na web, para a qual foi criada a terminologia webvertise , conjunção das palavras web e advertise, ou seja, rede e publicidade. Trata-se de um objeto de pesquisa que tem seu desenvolvimento muito mais presente no mundo das empresas, sendo ainda pouco analisado no âmbito acadêmico, especialmente no Brasil. Ao objeto, associamos três conceitos que formam a base teórica da obra e contribuem para o avanço do entendimento sobre a publicidade interativa: -virtualização havendo primeiro a transferência das informações do mundo real para o virtual e sua consequente potencialização dentro de um espaço de comunicação mundialmente interconectado; -interatividade na perspectiva do entendimento de suas características e formulação de pressupostos que auxiliem sua identificação e/ou desenvolvimento; -tridimensionalidade trazendo uma nova dimensão à informação veiculada na web - a profundidade - e a necessidade de adequação a um novo perfil de comunicação. Por fim, limitamos o campo a ser analisado dentro dos maiores portais web de conteúdo do Brasil, o que contribui para o entendimento da realidade nacional e o apontamento de soluções baseadas na estado atual da arte. Анотація:

In aim to improve information service to students and all university schools information stakeholders, it is very important to make and maintain institutional web portals structure and design to be modern, functional and pleasant for use. This paper is focused on analysis of web portals designs, with special attention to university portals of technical sciences schools having information technology-related study programmes. In this empirical research, an evaluation model to be applied upon the sample web portals is formulated according to the framework of user experience design cumulatively, by extraction of web pages, elements and their characteristics from web portals in the research sample. This evaluation model is applied in analysis of characteristics of each item in the sample, i.e. each web portal of schools of technical sciences that belong to state-owned universities in Serbia. Conclusions are related towards formulating a set of web design quality characteristics which could be applicable in benchmarking, redesign or creating new web portals.

Numerous ontologies have been introduced to represent and activate engineering knowledge across the development process. However, many of the ontologies in the manufacturing domain provide limited usability for individuals with limited knowledge of manufacturing processes available within the domain. Similarly, web-based e-sourcing portals lack the ability to adequately pair components whose developers have limited knowledge of manufacturing processes with manufacturers who are able to produce their product. Motivated by these current gaps, an ontology is proposed which is designed to enable both users with a limited knowledge and those with a preexisting knowledge of manufacturing to identify potential processes. The Part-focused Manufacturing Process Ontology (PMPO) is designed around the concept that manufacturing processes can be selected based upon desired features and attributes of a component/product. This differs from past ontologies that model the manufacturing process domain on the characteristics of the resources utilized during the process. Further, the ontology is populated with some manufacturer data and its functionality demonstrated using various example situations.

Анотація:

The descriptions of capabilities of manufacturing companies can be found in multiple locations including company websites, legacy system databases, and ad hoc documents and spreadsheets. The capability descriptions are often represented using natural language. To unlock the value of unstructured capability information and learn from it, there is a need for developing advanced quantitative methods supported by machine learning and natural language processing techniques. This research proposes a multi-step unsupervised learning methodology using K-means clustering and topic modeling techniques in order to build clusters of suppliers based on their capabilities, extract and organize the manufacturing capability terminology, and discover nontrivial patterns in manufacturing capability corpora. The capability data is extracted either directly from the website of manufacturing firms or from their profiles in e-sourcing portals and directories. Feature extraction and dimensionality reduction process in this work in supported by Ngram extraction and Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) methods. The proposed clustering method is validated experimentally based a dataset composed of 150 capability descriptions collected from web-based sourcing directories such as the Thomas Net directory for manufacturing companies. The results of the experiment show that the proposed method creates supplier cluster with high accuracy.

Анотація:

The present work is devoted to some results of using the MSC.SimManager for development of Multilevel Turbofan Simulation Environment (MTSE). The current MTSE’s versions include: subsystem of turbofan’s design and simulation on 1D level; a subsystem of turbofan’s low pressure system (fan, booster, low pressure turbine) steady and unsteady aerodynamic analysis on 3D level; a subsystem of turbofan’s nacelle steady aerodynamic analysis including inlet, bypass and nozzles flows at 3D level. These subsystems based on CAE applications (in house and commercial) allow execution of all the necessary sequence of actions, including engine’s flow path parameters, geometry model adaptation (NX), mesh generation (ICEM-CFD), aerodynamic calculation (CIAM’s in house COBRA code), raw data processing (Tecplot, Excel). The MTSE is realized as specialized Web-portals and all the data and results are stored in a unified database with opportunity to audit each stage of process and all the data base content.

Анотація:

Computational Prototyping Environment (CPE) is a web-based portal designed to simplify running Department of Defense (DoD) modeling and simulation tools on the DoD Supercomputing Resource Center’s (DSRC) High Performance Computing (HPC) systems. The first of these tools to be deployed in the CPE is an application (app) to conduct parametric studies and view results using the CREATE-AV Helios CFD software. Initial capability includes hover (collective sweep) and forward flight (speed sweep) performance calculations. The CPE Helios app allows for job submission to a DSRC’s HPC system and for the viewing of results created by Helios, i.e., time series and volumetric data. Example data input and results viewing are presented. Planned future functionality is also outlined.
