This article attempts to determine the state of the art in American urban history by looking at 1) the frequency with which books are used in syllabi, 2) the contents of the Journal of Urban History for the last five years, 3) the topics of books awarded prizes by the Urban History Association, and 4) the number of libraries that hold copies of the leading books in the field. The conclusions note a loss of influence by such writers as Mumford, Caro, and Warner, a continuation of the emphasis on narrow, modern time periods, and a general decline in the importance of the field. Comments by Timothy Gilfoyle and Carl Abbott contest the latter conclusion.

Many physical changes occur as one ages, including changes associated with the oral cavity. A review of the literature suggests that the provision of dental care to institutionalized elderly patients presents problems due to a variety of factors. The purpose of this study is to assess the level or dental care provided to residents of long-term care facilities located in Warren County, Kentucky. In addition, secondary objectives Include the ascertainment of who provides dental care to residents and the amount or in-service dental training made available to staff members of the facility. Each administrator of the long term care facilities located in Warren County participated in an *interview conducted by the author. During the interview, information was obtained for a 21 item questionnaire concerning the facility, the number and age range or the residents, and types of dental services provided within the facility. Results obtained from the questionnaire indicated that 77 percent or the residents in long-tern care facilities in Warren County are 70 years of age or older. No significant differences were noted in the types or dental services provided to residents. However, the dental services provided ranged from those that were obtained in a private dental office via transportation or the resident to outside dental facilities to routine oral hygiene measures carried out by staff members employed by the facility. The findings revealed significant differences in the dental status of the MRDD residents when compared to the nursing home residents. Other findings indicated that none of the long-term care facilities had dental operatories or dental radiographic equipment on the premises. Additional research would be required in order to address uncertainties discovered in the study. A followup to the questionnaire Interview with the consulting dentists may be included to determine to what capacity and to what extent they are utilized by the facilities. Other recommendations include the utilization of entrance dental examinations to determine if services offered do meet the needs of the residents and periodic dental examinations to aid in detection and thus reduce the prevalence of dental diseases in this population.

Thermoregulation is considered a top priority in neonatology due to the fact that relative to adults, neonates have a morphological susceptibility to excessive heat exchange with the environment, and exhibit limited physiological/behavioural responses to thermal strain. Consequently, the environmental conditions in which they are nursed must be tightly regulated to maintain body temperature stable. Neonatal intensive care units (NICU) use radiant warmers (RW) to thermally manage many newborns. However, recent evidence suggests that RW induce intermittent bouts of thermal strain that could adversely affect patients. This warrants further investigation of neonatal heat balance and the pertinent factors affecting it. Conducting an exhaustive audit of heat exchanges affecting the body during standard care under a RW could yield important information that would lead to the improvement of clinical practice in NICUs. The present thesis focuses on neonatal thermoregulatory responses, various body heat exchange mechanisms and processes during standard care under RW.

Nest defence behaviour, an important component of parental care in birds, was studied in two endemic passerines, the Grey Warbler, Gerygone igata, and the South Island Rifleman, Acanthisitta chloris chloris, at Kowhai Bush, South Island, New Zealand. Theoretical models based on Triver's parental investment theory predict that parents will increase the risk taken to defend their offspring as offspring age. By testing nest defence response of Grey Warblers and Riflemen to a mounted Little Owl, Athene noctua, near the nest I found that both species took a higher level of risk while defending nestlings than eggs. However, I show that the methodology used to study nest defence can affect the results obtained. I repeatedly exposed Grey Warbler and Rifleman parents to the model owl. Their responses after several tests became less intense than for parents that were only exposed to the model once. The level of intensity of nest defence was not affected by either the sex of the parent or whether parents were responding together or alone. Within pairs, Riflemen had highly correlated levels of nest defence response, whereas this correlation was less evident with Grey Warblers. Riflemen were found to adjust their level of defence according to the type of predator threatening the nest. Nest guarding, a previously undescribed aspect of nest defence in male Grey Warblers, was found to be carried out by males only at second nests. I suggest that nest guarding is a response to the threat of brood parasitism by the Shining Cuckoo, Chrysoccocyx lucidus.

In this thesis my initial goal was to use yellow warblers to examine the effect of paternal care on female mate choice. I first examined whether mate choice based on paternal care could be considered adaptive. Paternal care was variable among males and important to female fitness, but, contrary to a previous report, male chest striping could not be used to predict paternal care. Females did not compensate for reductions of male parental care, which resulted in significantly reduced nestling growth. In chapter two I tested the idea that monogamy in birds is maintained because of the need for biparental care. I reduced the need of strict biparental care by providing pairs at some nests with supplemental food, and found that the main effect of supplemental food was on maternal, not paternal behaviour. The first two chapters suggest that males and females provide for their brood independently from each other, which is in disagreement with current models on the maintenance of biparental care. These models assume that any given factor must affect maternal and paternal care equally for biparental care to be maintained. In Chapter three I showed that the effects of brood size and nestling age on parental care are similar for both sexes. In Chapter four I deal with age-related changes in reproductive success and the possible effects on female mate choice. Age affected the likelihood of breeding in females, but only the time of breeding in males. These changes were accompanied by age-related increases in size in both sexes. These results raise the possibility of age-related increases in parental ability, and female preference for older males.

Brood parasites avoid costs associated with raising young by adding eggs to another individual’s clutch and providing no parental care. When conspecific brood parasitism occurs in species with high parental investment, we expect hosts to suffer costs for raising an enlarged brood. Here I describe conspecific brood parasitism (CBP) in the prothonotary warbler using maternal exclusion analyses of 333 family groups. I found that 23.4% of clutches contained at least one offspring that was not matched to the social mother and determined that parasitism seems to be an opportunistic tactic. Hosts had lower average annual reproductive success than non-hosts, but CBP did not affect adult survival or nestling body condition and likelihood of recruitment. Clutches with CBP received less provisioning from the male, but not female, parent. Future research is needed to understand the effects of density and competition on the breeding behaviors of this and other similar species.

Different people can have different cultural interpretations of the person—atomic versus embedded—and these may affect health care decision-making. This study examines both the ethics of variations in personhood as well as their implications for the doctrine of informed consent and the duty to warn of genetic disease risk. It argues that variations in personhood are consistent with the ethics of the Principle of Autonomy and the Canadian stand on informed consent, though autonomy and consent play out differently in practice on the two models. Also as a result of different interpretations of the person, the duty to warn of hereditary risk is found to be relevant to the atomic conception but unnecessary among embedded individuals.

This chapter discusses exceptions to the general rule for corroboration of evidence. There are three categories of exception (i) where corroboration is required as a matter of law (speeding, perjury, treasons and attempts to commit these offences) and a conviction cannot be based on uncorroborated evidence; (ii) where neither corroboration in a technical sense nor supportive evidence is required as a matter of law, but the tribunal of fact may need to be warned to exercise caution before acting on the evidence of certain types of witness, if unsupported; (iii) five cases in which corroboration is not required as a matter of law, and there is no obligation to warn the tribunal of fact of the danger of acting on the unsupported or uncorroborated evidence, but there is a special need for caution. The five cases are confessions by mentally handicapped persons, identification evidence, lip-reading evidence, cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and unconvincing hearsay. Identification evidence is dealt with separately in Chapter 9.

Helen A. Gibson analyzes granny (Grand) midwives' epistemic and embodied care as a disruption of racialized capitalism with cosmic significance. Superseding temporalities of crisis, granny midwives practiced what Calvin Warren calls spiritual breath (à la Ashon Crawley's theorization) and thinking as the same. This poisis speaks to Black feminist and Womanist historiographical interventions, such as those by Saidiya Hartman, Jennifer L. Morgan, and Alys Weinbaum, of the solidarity-laden mode of living known as the Black radical tradition.

AbstractGiven the serious adverse effects of hypothermia in term and preterm infants, thermal protection is of paramount importance in neonatal care. To compare potential benefits of wIRA radiators with conventional radiant warmers in neonatology, physical investigations (agar phantoms) and clinical observations (term and preterm neonates) were performed. Physical investigations revealed a fundamental difference in the mode of action between the two types of radiation: Whereas with conventional radiant warmers, the increase in core temperature (phantoms) is preceded by marked elevations in surface temperature, wIRA leads to more direct rises in core temperature and results in smaller amounts of evaporative water loss from the surface. Clinical observations reveal that wIRA causes less skin surface warming than conventional heat irradiation at equal power densities (irradiances). wIRA used as a supplementary source of heat during primary care in the delivery room was found to exert a preventive effect against unintentional heat loss during the subsequent incubator transport of preterm neonates to the intensive care unit. Overall, due to its specific physical properties (“enhanced depth effect with less surface overheating”), wIRA seems to be particularly suited to replace the extra heat losses occurring in preterm or otherwise compromised neonates without undue risk of superficial burns.

When filming is completed, Hopkins flies to New York and has an affair with the German writer Carl Zuckmayer. Jack Warner casts Paul Muni in We Are Not Alone, but Muni refuses to accept Hopkins as his costar. Warner removes her from the film and a new property is brought to her attention, All This, and Heaven Too. Originally bought for Bette Davis, Hopkins wants it and threatens legal action, so Jack Warner assigns it to her. Critics call Hopkins’s performance in The Old Maid “magnetic” and the casting of Hopkins and Davis is compared to “steel striking steel.” Hopkins reads that Litvak and actress Ann Sheridan are having an affair. Despite her relationship with Carl Zuckmayer, she is furious. Hopkins flies to Reno and files for divorce. There, Hopkins reflects on Michael’s education and sends him to boarding school. In addition, her relationship with her mother is strained and her finances are low.

Tracy Warner Began to worry after she got a rejection letter from Pizza Hut a few weeks after graduating from Western. She hadn’t heard on some manager-level jobs at the Carl Sandburg Mall, but she expected at least some positive responses from the entry-level ones. “We wish you luck in finding a job worthy of your skills,” read the Pizza Hut letter. “What’s that?” Warner said, exasperated. “Either my skills suck, or I have too many skills. Which is it? ’Cause I’m kind of curious! It’s flattering to be overqualified but it doesn’t pay the bills.” Warner hadn’t expected a dream job to suddenly appear, but she had hoped for more than a quiet phone and a growing pile of rejection letters. She just needed something, anything, to get by. Several months into 2007, the newly minted and distinguished WIU graduate was still unemployed and uninsured. Although sworn off factory life, a desperate Warner applied to Farmland Foods. When Maytag shuttered in 2004, Farmland, a massive, loud, hog disassembly operation, became the largest employer in this part of western Illinois. With about 1,200 to 1,400 cutters and slicers and a $60 million payroll, the slaughterhouse employed a couple hundred more than BNSF, the largest employer in Galesburg. Like Mike Smith, Warner was just looking for a wage, any wage, with a “1” in front of it, and Farmland, on Monmouth’s northern edge, was close. It was so close, in fact, that on some days Warner could smell the tangy mix of rendered hog, hydrogen sulfide, methane, and whatever else made up that vile smell in her house, a mile to the south. Farmland was a last resort for former Maytag workers. The jobs there, involving tearing apart pig carcasses with razor-sharp knives and powerful pneumatic tools were, frankly, tougher than appliance work. Perhaps worst was the “sticker,” which slit the throats of about 1,000 shrieking animals each hour for about $12 an hour. That was one pig every four seconds, at about a penny per kill.

In 1802, Elizabeth Warner, a member of a small Congregationalist church in Massachusetts, found herself excommunicated for seeking to discipline members of her religious body. Afterward, Warner authored the first public female denunciation of her excision in North America, using her pamphlet to call attention to the ways churches and male ministers circumscribed female freedoms contrary to Scripture. Warner’s struggle shows that while women were often barred from speaking publicly in churches throughout much of North America, they could nonetheless mobilize their own “liberty of private judgment” to claim a right to particular privileges within the Church of Christ.

Podolije 3 site is located in the basin of Lava river on the Southern coast of the Ladoga. The site was occupied several times during Neolithic period, in the Early Metal Epoch and in the Late Medieval Age. The cultural peat layer contents the remains of wood fishing constructions of end of 4 ka. BC. This artefacts belong to people of cultures of the Typical Comb Ware, the Late Comb Ware, the Late Pit-Comb Ware, the organic tempered ceramics and asbestos ceramics. The first period of occupation of these people is dated from 3900–1800 cal BC and second period associates with a Medieval time, from 1493–1780 cal AD.

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">This study examines the impact of slip in aero-thermal conditions of supercooled large droplets (SLD) produced in an Icing Wind Tunnel (IWT) on the ice accretion characteristics. The study identifies potential biases in the SLD model development based on IWT data and numerical predictions that assume the SLD to be in aerothermal equilibrium with the IWT airflow. To obtain realistic temperature and velocity data for each droplet size class in the test section of the Braunschweig Icing Wind Tunnel (BIWT), a Lagrangian droplet tracking solver was used within a Monte Carlo framework. Results showed that SLDs experience considerable slips in velocity and temperature due to their higher inertia and short residence time in the Braunschweig IWT. Large droplets were found to be warmer and slower than the flow in the test section, with larger droplets experiencing larger aerothermal slips. To examine the impact of these slips, numerical ice accretion simulations were performed on a NACA 0012 airfoil using in-house icing software PoliMIce with realistic droplet slip conditions and ideal equilibrium conditions. Results showed that an increase in velocity slips with larger droplets led to a reduction in the impingement water mass rate and impingement limits. Further, the velocity slip reduced the splashed mass rate estimated by NASA LEWICE and ONERA SLD models. The reduced supercooling of larger droplets reduces the freezing fraction and produces extended runback limits at warmer temperatures ([-1, -5] °C). However, the influence of thermal slip is negligible below -5°C. The study concludes that aero-thermal slips significantly alter the ice accretion characteristics of SLD. It emphasizes the need to consider these slips in IWT data-driven SLD icing model development and subsequent SLD ice accretion simulations.</div></div>

An experimental analysis of the aerothermal phenomena in the vehicle underhood is given using temperature measurements and separate measurements of convective and radiative heat fluxes. The vehicle underhood used for these measurements is instrumented by 120 surface and air thermocouples and 20 fluxmeters. Measurements are carried out on a passenger vehicle in wind tunnel S4 of Saint-Cyr-France for three thermal functioning conditions. In particular, it is shown for some components that outside air entering the engine compartment (for cooling the different components by convection) can in fact heat other components. This problem results from the underhood architecture, specifically the positioning of some components downstream of warmer components in the same airflow. To avoid this undesired situation, an optimized thermal management procedure is proposed that uses static and dynamic air deflectors during the constant-speed driving (rooting) phase of a vehicle. Much of the present paper is devoted to fluxmetric analysis of underhood thermal behavior (especially the absorption of convective heat flux); we also describe a new control procedure for implementing air deflectors in the actual car underhood.

Studi kasus ini kemudian dikomparasi dengan data yang didapatkan dengan metode studi pustaka. Studi pustaka dari buku-buku yang berhubungan dengan layout, visual, digital marketing. Hasil komparasi ini akan dianalisis apakah studi kasus tersebut memiliki kesamaan dengan teknik-teknik visual atau layout pada studi pustaka. Setelah dikomparasi hasil pembahasan dibuat menjadi sebuah kesimpulan tentang analisis studi kasus ini., yaitu website WP248 memiliki teknik dalam penyusunan layout dan teknik mengvisualkan gambar-gambar mebel yang menarik. The management of ageing civil infrastructure represents one of the most pressing challenges of modern societies. The last Infrastructure Report Card of the American Society of Civil Engineers (2017) estimated that 39% of the more than 600.000 bridges in USA are over 50 years old and estimated the rehabilitation costs at $123 billion. A similar picture emerges across Europe. Spain counts more than 2.606 km of high-speed railway, and a total of 207 critical bridges. An important number of them presents of one form of degradation or damage. The replacement rate is very low and that means an increase of ageing bridges in the next years. Despite large financial efforts have been dedicated to research in this field, the methodology has not been successfully completed/integrated, and life-extension of bridges is still sparsely implemented in practice. The last report of the European Joint Research Centre warned about the weak link between research and the wide-scale adoption of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) technologies. The economic efficiency of the bridge is the total life cycle cost divided by its service life. New alternatives such as reliability-centered maintenance and reconditioning programs play an ever increasingly important role. However, these improvements are just the first glimpse of an ambitious and promising opportunity: bridge life-extension. To address these deficiencies the present methodology involves important advances on the real application of: SHM methodologies for high-speed railway ageing infrastructures, smart sensors, energy autonomy of the long-term monitoring system, and structural prognosis based on data-driven decision making.

Tujuan dengan adanya tugas tersebut, praktikan juga dapat bereksplorasi untuk mendapatkan bentuk gubahan massa, warna bangunan, serta mencocokan ukuran bangunan dengan site yang tersedia. Dengan membuat pekerjaan tersebut, praktikan menggunakan metode pengumpulan data atau kuantitatif dengan cara mendapatkan data denah dan ukuran site yang nantinya akan dirancang sebagai bangunan komersial. Sebelum melakukan pekerjaan yang diberikan, praktikan mencari referensi terkait tugas tersebut, seperti mencari referensi desain fasad, desain pintu masuk, mencocokan desain bangunan dengan lahan parkir existing, dan desain untuk sistem drop off penumpang. The paper describes Late Roman and Early Byzantine decorated fine ware vessels and fragments found on both sides of the Kerch Strait (city of Kytaia, Džurg-Oba necropolis and fortlet Il’ičevskoe), and in Chersonesos. The finds represent the recently identified group of fine ceramics called Late Roman Pontic Burnished Ware. They are characterized by very re fined, pale pinkish - light brownish clay containing some very fine flakes of mica and single lumps of lime of various sizes. The inside surface of the dishes is carefully burnished, producing a slight lustre, and contains elaborated decoration executed by delicate incising in dried clay after burnishing and before firing (sgraffito-like technique). The decorative compositions contain centrally placed big cross, in two cases flanked by palm-branches or cypresses of similar size, and in one case completed with representation of four birds between arms of the cross. The central compositions are surrounded by two concentric grooved lines accompanied in two cases by a long spiral scratched on their outside. The outer surface of the examined dishes was finished with less care, it has some turning marks and a dull appearance. The jugs with their burnished surfaces bear incised decoration in the upper part of their bodies. In both cases, it contains a friese composed of simple motifs such as palm trees and branches, threeleaf branches and rope patterns

Dalam perkembangan arsitektur konsep semiotika sering digunakan di dalam konsep arsitektur, yaitu dimana para arsitek memiliki keinginan untuk mengajak seluruh masyarakat untuk bisa memahami suatu karya arsitektur dengan memberikan tanda atau pesan dalam karya arsitektur berupa elemen- elemen arsitektur bangunannya dan membentuk tanda pada bangunan. Pendekatan untuk mengklasifikasikan semiotika yaitu dengan cara dikotomi semiotika saussurean dan trikotomi semiotika pierccian. Dalam dikotomi saussurean yang di kembangkan oleh Roland Barthes disebutkan ada beberapa unsur dalam semiotika arsitektur yaitu konotasi dan denotasi. Dalam trikotomi semiotika Piercean yaitu tanda yang mengandung arti, indeks, ikon, dan simbol yang di kembangkan oleh Charles Morris menjadi pragmatik, sintaksis, dan semantik. Masjid merupakan sebuah bangunan paling khas yang melambangkan simbol islam dan juga budaya masyarakat indonesia yang heterogen, sehingga masjid yang ada di Indonesia tampak sangat berbeda dengan masjid-masjid serupa yang beraa di wilayah Timur Tengah. Umumnya atap masjid – masjid kuno yang ada di Indonesia tidaklah mengacu kepada atap yang berbentuk kubah tetapi mengamil bentuk atap yang seperti kerucut atau tumpang dan bahkan ada yang bertingkat. Sistem tanda yang terdapat dalam arsitektur meliputi banyak aspek berupa bentuk fisik, ukuran, proporsi serta jarak antar bagian, warna yang digunakan dan hal lainnya. The COVID-19 pandemic is most notably a physical health crisis, but it strongly affects mental health as well. Social isolation, job and financial losses, uncertainty about the real impact of the crisis, and fear for physical well-being affect the mental health of many people worldwide. These stressors can increase emotional distress and lead to depression and anxiety disorders. At the same time, there are enormous challenges on the health care side. People in need of mental health support have been increasingly confronted with limitations and interruptions of mental health services in many countries. In May 2020, the United Nations already warned that the COVID-19 pandemic has the seeds of a major mental health crisis if action is not taken. The panel discussed and analysed mental health in times of the COVID-19 pandemic with reference to South Africa, Nigeria, Germany and Spain.

This report, commissioned by Bloomberg Philanthropies, finds that 42,000 lives could be saved and 150,000 serious injuries prevented by 2030 if all new cars in seven G20 countries were required to be equipped with an inexpensive crash avoidance technology starting in 2020. Thirteen G20 counties currently adhere to United Nations regulations on electronic stability control (ESC). If the seven remaining countries—Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa—also mandated ESC in 2020, the report estimates $21.5 billion in economic benefit to those countries from the prevention of deaths and serious injuries. Argentina and Brazil are due to start applying ESC regulations in 2020. The UK-based Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) conducted the independent study of costs and benefits of applying ESC regulation in G20 countries, which are responsible for 98% of the world’s passenger car production. This report comes before the 3rd Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Stockholm, which is the largest gathering of governments and is a key opportunity for adoption of this UN-recommended standard. According to the World Health Organization’s Global Road Safety Report, the number of road traffic deaths reached 1.35 million in 2016. Of all vehicle safety features, electronic stability control is regarded as the most important one for crash avoidance since it is 38% effective in reducing the number of deaths in loss-of-control collisions. ESC tries to prevent skidding and loss of control in cases of over-steering and under-steering. The technology continuously monitors a vehicle’s direction of travel, steering wheel angle and the speed at which the individual wheels are rotating. If there is a mismatch between the intended direction of travel and the actual direction of travel, as indicated by the steering wheel position, ESC will selectively apply the brakes and modulate the engine power to keep the vehicle traveling along the intended path. The cost of implementing ESC on vehicles that already contain anti-lock braking systems is thought to be as little as $50 per car. And the report finds the benefits are significant: For every dollar spent by consumers in purchasing vehicles with these technologies, there is a US$2.80 return in economic benefit to society because of the deaths and serious injuries avoided. The analysis warns that without regulation of ESC, the seven remaining G20 countries will only reach 44% installation of ESC by 2030. However, if all seven countries implemented ESC regulations this year, 85% of the total car fleet in G20 countries will have ESC by 2030, a figure still below the United Nations target of 100% ESC fleet coverage by 2030.

The fifth annual Global Health 50/50 report, Boards for all?, presents our first-ever analysis of the gender and geography of who governs global health. Through an examination of the demographics of over 2,000 board members of the most influential organisations active in global health, the report warns that global health is not living up to its name. The report further presents its annual review of the equality- and gender-related policies and practices of 200 global organisations. Building on five years of evidence, it finds signs of rapid progress in building more equitable and gender-responsive global health organisations, while also revealing stagnating progress among a large subset of global health organisations. For the first time, the Index categorises all organisations by performance and presents dedicated pages for each organisation to explore and compare findings. Boards for all? is a call to realise a globally representative and equitable global health governance that can deliver health for all.
