The world has witnessed the digital transformation and Industry 4.0 technologies in the past decade. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of automation and digitalization in certain areas of the manufacturing industry; in particular, warehouse automation often has challenges in design and successful deployment. The effective management of the warehouse and inventory plays a pivotal role in the supply chain and production. In the literature, different architectures of Warehouse Management Systems (WMSs) and automation techniques have been proposed, but most of those have focused only on particular sections of warehouses and have lacked successful deployment. To achieve the goal of process automation, we propose an Internet-of-Things (IoT)-based architecture for real-time warehouse management by dividing the warehouse into multiple domains. Architecture viewpoints were used to present models based on the context diagram, functional view, and operational view specifically catering to the needs of the stakeholders. In addition, we present a generic IoT-based prototype system that enables efficient data collection and transmission in the proposed architecture. Finally, the developed IoT-based solution was deployed in the warehouse of a textile factory for validation testing, and the results are discussed. A comparison of the key performance parameters such as system resilience, efficiency, and latency rate showed the effectiveness of our proposed IoT-based WMS architecture.

Abstract The utilization of data warehouses in various fields is an absolute necessity. A data warehouse is a database that contains large amounts of data that aims to help organizations, fields, and institutions specifically for decision making. Data warehouses can produce important information in the future. Loading data from various sources and processed through an ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) process that displays data consistently is the basis for creating a data warehouse architecture. The development of a data warehouse in education will provide significant benefits for the progress of education. Integration of data and processing results stored in the data warehouse can be the basis for evaluating better planning. Development of data warehouse adopt the multidimensional modelling method which consists of four stages: select the business process, declare the grain, select dimensions, and identify facts. This stage produces a data warehouse architecture and influences and contributes to the advanced information technology in education.

In this vision paper, the authors discuss models and techniques for integrating, processing and querying data, information and knowledge within data warehouses in a user-centric manner. The user-centric emphasis allows us to achieve a number of clear advantages with respect to classical data warehouse architectures, whose most relevant ones are the following: (i) a unified and meaningful representation of multidimensional data and knowledge patterns throughout the data warehouse layers (i.e., loading, storage, metadata, etc); (ii) advanced query mechanisms and guidance that are capable of extracting targeted information and knowledge by means of innovative information retrieval and data mining techniques. Following this main framework, the authors first outline the importance of knowledge representation and management in data warehouses, where knowledge is expressed by existing ontology or patterns discovered from data. Then, the authors propose a user-centric architecture for OLAP query processing, which is the typical applicative interface to data warehouse systems. Finally, the authors propose insights towards cooperative query answering that make use of knowledge management principles and exploit the peculiarities of data warehouses (e.g., multidimensionality, multi-resolution, and so forth).

Until recently, the issue of analytical data was related to Data Warehouse, but due to the necessity of analyzing new types of unstructured data, both repetitive and non-repetitive, Big Data arises. Although this subject has been widely studied, there is not available a reference architecture for Big Data systems involved with the processing of large volumes of raw data, aggregated and non-aggregated. There are not complete proposals for managing the lifecycle of data or standardized terminology, even less a methodology supporting the design and development of that architecture. There are architectures in small-scale, industrial and product-oriented, which limit their scope to solutions for a company or group of companies, focused on technology but omitting the functionality. This paper explores the requirements for the formulation of an architectural model that supports the analysis and management of data: structured, repetitive and non-repetitive unstructured; there are some architectural proposals –industrial or technological type– to propose a logical model of multi-layered tiered architecture, which aims to respond to the requirements covering both Data Warehouse and Big Data.

We propose a multi-agent simulation environment for logistics warehouses. Simulation is a crucial part of designing industrial systems, such as logistics warehouses. A warehouse is a multi-agent system (MAS) that consists of various autonomous subsystems with robots, material-handling equipment, and human workers. It is generally difficult to analyze the performance of a MAS thus, it is important to model a warehouse and conduct simulations to design and evaluate the possible system configurations. However, the cost of modeling warehouses and modifying the models is high because there are various components and interactions compared to conventional multi-agent simulations. We proposed a self-contained agent architecture and message architecture of a multi-agent simulation environment for logistics warehouses to reduce the simulation-model development and modification costs. We quantitatively evaluated our environment in terms of development costs by comparing such costs of our environment and a widely used multi-agent simulation environment.

This paper examines tobacco warehouses in the southern United States as sites of both work and play. Using a performative approach in the study of architecture that is rooted in folklife methodology, the essay claims these quotidian working structures as places of celebratory potential amid the strictures of Jim Crow spatial segregation. In particular, it focuses on a series of massive dances held in the elaborately decorated warehouses during the early-to-mid-20th century. During these dances, Black celebrants turned the restrictive social and economic working spaces of the tobacco warehouse into places of radical potential and pleasure. The claims of this essay are supported by both conventional architectural documentation and the oral testimonies of a variety of tobacco workers, musicians, and dancers, who made use of the warehouses for a variety of often conflicting purposes. Told together, their narratives emphasize both spatialized resistance to segregation, and the importance of the ephemeral archives of individual stories and memories to the study of vernacular architectural history.

A huge number of SCANIA trucks and busses are running on the roads. Unlike the trucks and buses of the past, they are hi-tech vehicles, carrying a lot of technical and operational information that pertains to different aspects like load statistics, driving time, engine-speed over time and much more. This information is fed into an analysis system where it is organized to support analytical questions. Over the period of time this system has become overloaded and needs to be optimized. There are a number of areas identified that can be considered for improvement. However, it is not possible to analyze the whole system within the given constraints. A subset is picked which has been thought of to be sufficient for the purpose of the thesis. The system takes a lot of time to load new data. Data loading is not incremental. There is a lot of redundancy in the storage structure. Query execution takes a lot of time in some parts of the database. The methods chosen for this thesis includes data warehouse design and architecture analysis, end user queries review, and code analysis. A potential solution is presented to reduce the storage space requirements and maintenance time taken by the databases. This is achieved by presenting a solution to reduce the number of databases maintained in parallel and contains duplicated data. Some optimizations have been made in the storage structure and design to improve the query processing time for the end users. An example incremental loading strategy is also implemented to demonstrate the working and idea. This helps in the reduction of loading time. Moreover, An investigation has been made into a commercially available Data warehouse management System. The investigation is mostly based on hardware architecture and how it can contributes to better performance. This portion is only theoretical. Based on the analysis recommendations are made regarding the architecture and design of the data warehouse.

Living in the Information Age, organisations must be able to exploit their data alongside the traditional economic resources of man, machine and money. Accordingly, organisations implement data warehouses to organise and consolidate their data, which creates a decision support system that is “subject oriented”, “time variant”, “integrated” and “non-volatile”. However, the organisation's ability to successfully exploit their data is determined by the degree of strategic alignment. As such, this study poses the question: how can a data warehouse be successfully and demonstrably aligned to an organisation's strategic objectives? This thesis demonstrates that strategic alignment can be achieved by following a new "top down" data warehouse implementation framework, the Configuration Approach, which is based upon determining an organisation's target configuration. This was achieved by employing Miles and Snow's Ideal Types to formulate a questionnaire that reveals an organisation's target configuration in terms of its approach to the Entrepreneurial, Administration and Information Systems challenges. Crucially, this thesis also provides the means to choose a data warehouse architecture that is wholly based on the organisation's target configuration. The Configuration Approach was evaluated using a single case study undergoing a period of strategic transformation where the implementation of a data warehouse was key to its strategic ambitions. The case study illustrated how it is possible to articulate an organisation's strategic configuration, which becomes the key driver for building a warehouse that demonstrably supports the resolution of its Entrepreneurial and Administration challenges. Significantly, the case study also provides a unique opportunity to demonstrate how the target configuration helps organisations to make the right choice of data warehouse architecture to satisfy the Information Systems challenge. In this case, the Configuration Approach provides a basis for challenging the architectural choices made by a consultancy on behalf of the participating organisation. Accordingly, it can be asserted that data warehouses are strategic investments, if implemented using the Configuration Approach.

This thesis studies the creation of a series of forms to provoke physical sensations and emotional responses from the user. Designs were made that strengthened the meaning of the forms, and the emotional responses they illicit in relation to a sequence of physical experiences of form and space. This sequence was abstracted from the Greek myth of Eros and Psyche. To do this the thesis uses a family of forms, a directional form for movement, their material and structural qualities, and the inter-relationships established between each of these and with the site. The site is a set of three adjoining warehouse buildings on the East Boston waterfront. The major body of the text describes what I produced. This includes the introduction, which describes the formal considerations that are present in the final model. Next, a photographic essay describes the final model. The photographs lead the reader through the built sequence of events. The two parts that the thesis built on are then described: the myth, which is retold as reference for the previous experience and to help explain the genesis of the creation, and the site which is described. With the site description, the intervention is described in plan and the parts are exhibited.The last section of the thesis describes the process by which I moved from the myth and the site, into drawings, and through to the final model.

Conceptually re-defining the role of a 100-year-old waterfront brick and timber warehouse structure, it is turned inside-out : interior becomes path. Programmatic functions imitate the physical characteristics of a conceptual dichotomy set in motion by the creation of two sides to the 'path'. Program ranges from flexible and transitional to static and massive, and is laid out laterally along the proposed line. Specific program elements become, relatively, physical archive and digital exhibition space. Denying the over-preserved role of distinct and bound artifact, the old structure attempts animation. The structural patterns of the original warehouse form the armature (interior grid) against which differences are registered. There is no longer bounding geometry but an interplay of landscape and transitional spaces - this is not a 'marker' or symbolic monument but a reconciliation between monumental artifact, material memory, and pattern via path. Traditionally static boundaries are re-interpreted as inverted and fluctuating zones that provide for new forms of spatial, programmatic, and aesthetic engagement.

This Master Thesis work is about the rebirth of a warehouse, once part of Innocenti S.p.A. Located in the district of Lambrate, Milano, the factory used to cover an area of nearly 800.000 sqm back in the Nineties, it nowadays presents itself as a fragmented scenario. This work aims to be a testimony of the past, by first showing all the available official materials that were recovered right before everything shut down. As a second part, it suggests a proposal for one of the most iconic buildings left to a state of complete abandonment and self extinction: the warehouse now known as the Crystal Palace because of its present conditions. Accepting the conditions of one thing and enhancing them in a programmatic way, is probably a solution for dealing with our industrial archaeology, for an innovative, engaging and sustainable approach. An extension of the already existing park finds a new place under the original roof structure. In order to integrate the project in the surrounds from a sociological point of view, the community will be provided with new spaces for exhibition galleries and, moreover, the city of Milano will benefit of the first botanical garden in history.

The Freight Warehouse Architecture Studio is adjacent to Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Although designed as an adaptive reuse, it is a direct result of two things: a reading of Eisenman's Koizumi Project and working in the office for a few weeks immediately proceeding commencement on the studio. The reading was the onset of the theory necessary for the study, and the experience in the office offered the opportunity to establish the direction for the project. The question of culture, understanding, and reading yields the question of the reconciliation of personal history and community history, how an architect intervenes in a location fraught with tradition. As a result, there is "a condition of a space evolving from within, not an insertion, from without.... So what is interesting about this space is we set up the mechanism of interplay, but we did not know what was going to happen. In other words, I am not saying it is a beautiful design.... In a sense it is mediated because the hand of design is taken away..."
