In this paper, effects of employing toe-off and heel-contact gait phases on the performance of bipedal robots traversing stairs are examined. The main goal is to demonstrate the hypothesis that employing toes and heels during walking up and down stairs improves the gait performance in terms of actuating joint torques and energy consumption. For this purpose, a comprehensive dynamics model for a 3D biped robot is developed and the inverse dynamics solutions during various walking phases are presented. To realize walking up and down stairs, a zero moment point (ZMP)-based pattern generation routine in the task space is proposed. In this routine, first, trajectories for the feet and the pelvis in the task space are designed to realize the desired task and preserve the feasibility constraints. Then, consistent with the topology of walking, suitable trajectory for the toe joint is generated. To examine the effects of heel-contact and toe-off gait phases, three walking topologies for walking up stairs and four walking topologies for walking down stairs, depending on the use of toe-off and heel-contact motions, are considered. For these topologies, the optimization procedure is conducted to yield the optimal patterns. Finally, the obtained patterns are compared in terms of energy consumption and joint torques, while obtained results show a significant improvement in the gait performance in terms of considered cost functions.

Walking is frequently affected by multiple sclerosis (MS), and mounting evidence demonstrates the impact of walking limitations on the lives of our patients, based on self-report measures and clinical assessments. While assessing the various aspects of walking can be complex and time-consuming, simple tools have been validated, which open the door to routine quantitative measurement of walking in the clinical management of our patients. The use of newer, widely available, and relatively affordable technologies, may improve the feasibility of such measurements, and potentially bring them into the patients’ own environment.

Background:This study explores the strategies that experienced walkers felt were most useful for sustaining outdoor walking routines. To investigate this issue, a survey-based instrument was used in combination with a Conceptual Content Cognitive Mapping (3CM) exercise.Methods:Seventy-one experienced walkers were asked to complete the 3CM exercise to explore the strategies that have helped them regularly walk outdoors. After 1 week these same individuals received a survey investigating these same issues as well as demographics and physical activity participation. Results:There was general agreement between 3CM and survey data with respect to the strategies used by experienced walkers. The most highly endorsed strategies involved using health goals and supportive walking environments. Survey results also revealed that those more likely to endorse the use of social support took fewer walks per week, but engaged in more nonwalking related physical activity. Conclusions:Overall, the findings suggest that experienced walkers use a variety of strategies. Strategies such as focusing of the positive health outcomes, using attractive natural settings, and developing realistic action plans appeared to be the most useful. These results also indicate the 3CM technique may be an effective way to explore beliefs and motivations regarding physical activity.

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTIONPrescribing physical activity is an inexpensive method to promote patients’ long-term health, but determinants of adherence with physical activity prescriptions are seldom considered. AIMTo identify facilitators and barriers experienced by adults with type 2 diabetes when prescribed regular walking. METHODSParticipants were prescribed a regular walking routine that met current physical activity guidelines for type 2 diabetes management for a period of 3 months. Pre- and post-intervention questions considered participants’ self-rated health and physical activity amount. Thematic analysis of recorded interviews held after the 3-month prescription identified barriers and facilitators to adherence for participants. RESULTSTwenty-eight adults (aged 60±9 years, body mass index 32.3±4.0kg/m2, HbA1c 59±16mmol/mol) participated in the 3-month intervention, providing 7 years of lived experience. Self-rated health (14%; 95% confidence interval (CI) 7–22%) and time spent walking (+11 min/day; 95% CI 4–18 min/day) increased following the prescription. Major themes motivating participants were: establishing a walking routine; the support of their family members; observing health benefits; and being monitored by a health professional. The greatest barriers were associated with walking in the evening and included feelings of insecurity in the dark or a preference for sedentary behaviour. DISCUSSIONA prescription to walk increased time spent in physical activity and self-rated health in adults with type 2 diabetes. Health-care professionals can support walking prescriptions by promoting facilitators and reducing barriers to prescription adherence. Practical solutions to barriers include identifying alternative physical activity opportunities within the house or advice to develop support networks to provide company while walking.

Abstract In the field of early childhood research children’s mobility is usually discussed only in terms of physical activity in the preschool yard. More seldom is it discussed in terms of mobility practices and how young children move in public spaces. With unique detailed video-ethnographic data on mobile preschools and a new combination of theories on space, mobilities and peer culture this article analyses how young children negotiate mobility practices and engage in embodied learning in the collective preschool routine of walking in line. Two empirical examples of walking in line in contrasting public spaces show how the mobile preschool group moves in space as a collective body co-produced by children’s and teachers’ individual bodies. It is argued that walks in line are not merely a form of ‘transport’ between places but are important as social and learning spaces. While walking in line, children collectively ‘do’ space in diverse ways depending on where and how they move, and in relation to where and when teachers negotiate safety issues. In this process, the spaces, activities and routines alike are transformed.

Stair climbing provides a feasible opportunity for increasing physical activity (PA) in daily living. The purpose of this study was to examine the daily walking and stair-climbing steps among healthy older adults (age: 74.0 ± 4.9 years; Body Mass Index (BMI): 22.3 ± 2.5 kg/m2). Participants (34 females and 15 males) attended a weekly 6-month community-based PA program. During the entire program period, daily walking and stair-climbing steps were recorded using a pedometer (Omron, HJA-403C, Kyoto, Japan). Before and after the 6-month program, height, body weight and leg muscle strength were assessed. After the 6-month program, the mean walking and stair-climbing steps in both women and men increased significantly (p ≤ 0.01). Daily stair-climbing steps increased about 36 steps in women and 47 steps in men. At the end of 6 months, only male participants had significant correlation between the number of stair steps and leg muscle strength (r = 0.428, p = 0.037). This study reported that healthy older adults attending the community-based PA program had regular stair-climbing steps during daily living. Promoting stair climbing as an exercise routine was feasible to increase their walking and stair-climbing steps.

This thesis is a comprehensive study of the fundamental properties of a specific kind of optical spatial solitary waves. First observed experimentally in 1995, these solitary waves are formed by an optical beam at a fundamental frequency and its second harmonic which propagate together and are mutually entangled; and are due to a balanced interplay between the beams' linear diffraction and a second-order nonlinear susceptibility of the medium. They are thereby referred as 'Optical Solitons in Quadratic Nonlinear Media' or simply 'Quadratic Solitons', They are also known as 'Multicolor Solitons' recalling that they are formed by beams at different frequencies.
A quadratic nonlinear media needs to be non centrosymmetric which is a special kind of anisotropy. A great deal of quadratic nonlinear materials (the most used by industry such as lithim niobate, KTP, etc.) are uniaxial meaning that they feature a symmetry axis known as 'optical axis'. The direction of propagation of an optical beam relative to that axis determines the characteristics of the beam's propagation through the quadratic nonlinear material. A main result of that in some configurations of interest is a walk-off suffered by the beam as it enters the quadratic material.
The properties of the families of quadratic solitons in the presence of a linear walk-off (quadratic walking solitons) are studied as well in the thesis stating that there is a relationship between the power injected into the medium and the walking angle, suitable to applications of all-optical switching and routing.
An important last part of the thesis is devoted to the study from a practical viewpoint and through extensive numerical experiments of the potential of these solitary waves as the basis of practical all-optical switches and routers which could take the all-optical transparent network to a reality. The experiments have allowed to identify several configurations of interest with power level and dimensions suited to practical applications which could allow the production of commercial all-optical switching and routing devices based on quadratic solitons.

Pedestrian walking and choice behavior presented was first studied by Fruin in 1971, and since then a lot of research have been carried out in order to understand how humans move and what does make them make choices and obtain certain patterns. In relation to pedestrians, a significant bottleneck inside public stations evaluated by research are the level-change facilities, as Stair Walks and Escalators. The aim of this research is studying how pedestrian behave in the vicinity to stairways and escalators, and how does that affect pedestrian choice, speed and acceleration when choosing one of the two facilities. Also, with a need for more data on pedestrian traffic, further data collection is a big requirement to analyze their behavior and use as tools in future measures. At last, how to optimize the movement of pedestrians in relation to level changes, considering the effects of the movements observed. Two case studies were analysed, Stockholm Central Station and Uppsala Central Station. The study compares data collection methods, tracking methods and previous studies to better fit the scope of this research. The data is backed up from previous research and explains which method better fitted the options available. As a result, video data collection was chosen to collect the data, a semi-automatic tracking software called T-analyst was used to extract speed, trajectories and acceleration from the videos, and microsimulation modelling from VISSIM further investigated different design options to optimize the overall performance and improve travel time in the same area. The analysis found out that there was a possibility to increase the overall performance of the location in higher flow levels, where the most significant queues could be seen, since there was the possibility to achieve higher speeds by modifying the width and position of the stair walks, which allow for a smaller queue in both directions.

Since motorized transport problems have proved to be critical and contrary to the concept of urban sustainability, the idea of increasing the active travel modes through changes in urban form is a key subject of today´s mobility agenda. Traffic congestion, air pollution and severe monetary and social costs are associated with the current patterns of urbanization and mobility, especially in developing countries, where an explosive motorized fleet growth occurs simultaneously to an acceleration of urbanization and sprawl processes. Most recently evidences of a causal relationship between massive use of private vehicles and chronic health disorders have led to an increase in research about walking as an effective and clean mode of transportation. Also, the interest about the quality of life experience in the city came to add up to this body of knowledge, bringing in ideas of livability to walkability studies. Beyond the aggregate demand studies that aim to increase the walking mode share, there is now a growing interest on more localized aspects of the walking phenomenon - the routes - trying to understand the ways in which people travel on foot when connecting origins and destinations. This work proposes a method based on assessing data from actually taken walking trips using GPS devices and on modeling pedestrian´s choice behavior using discrete choice models. A study in the city of Porto Alegre, south of Brazil, followed 82 individuals for three consecutive days and, through the representation of several layers of urban data in a GIS environment, associated their trajectories with the main urban form attributes to allow the modeling experiment. The results show that the built environment features play an important role as a decision attribute, producing perceived utility/disutility on the decision-makers´ minds. They indicated that, in addition to the basic travel effort attributes such as trip distance or street slope, other factors such as the straightness of the trip, the road hierarchy, the presence of busy intersections, landmark buildings, noticeable public spaces and the density of buildings along the walking stretches indeed influence the route choice. The relatively small sample size and the spatial clustering of trips around the city´s central area doesn´t allow to the generalization of results. However, the study can be taken as a valid exploratory analysis, since it builds up a methodology that can be expanded and applied in other urban contexts. Furthermore, the results reveal some particular local features that indicate the existence of significant behavioral differences from the developed cities where previous similar studies were performed. These qualities make the proposed framework a promising decision support tool for sustainable urban mobility projects in Brazil.

Built environment factors influence pedestrian route choice behaviour, but their impact is not well known. This thesis investigates the influences of the built environment factors on walking route preference and safety. By using the ‘Physical Activity through Sustainable Transport Approaches’ framework, this research studied the perceptions and preferences of pedestrian route choice in a typical suburban environment in Australia through a stated preference survey. This thesis has established the interrelationship between safety, security, and built environment factors across men and women pedestrians. The findings highlight increasing land-use diversity and providing adequate trees may improve perceived safety and security among pedestrians.

This study investigates how students choose their walking routes to a university. Their observed walking routes were compared against the shortest path routes and against the least directional change routes. The urban design features (e.g. streets, benches, fountains, buildings) of these routes were also examined through physical and virtual (e.g. Google Earth image) surveys. The study reveals that students' route choice decision is highly influenced by street configuration – less directional changes are preferred over the shortest path distance – highlighting the need to design urban streets straighter to promote walking.

Positioned between writing and drawing, the diagram is proposed by John Berger as an alternative strategy for articulating encounters with landscape. A diagrammatic approach offers a schematic vocabulary that can compress time and offer a spatial reading of information. Situated within the contemporary field of direct data visualisation, my practice-led research interprets Berger’s ‘Field’ essay as a guide to producing four field | studies within a suburban park in Canberra. My seasonal investigations demonstrate how applying the conventions of the pictorial list, dot-distribution map, routing diagram and colour-wheel reveals subtle ecological and biographical narratives.

This thesis follows the everyday movements of a group of elderly Australians, to critically examine how they came to experience a sense of home while living with bodily and cognitive impairments in a nursing home. In tracing their steps and the minutiae of their day-to-day activities, this research illustrates how nursing home residents experience ‘home’ as a sense of ‘rightness’ of being through doing the most mundane activities of walking, transferring position and eating. Examining care through the lens of home, I analyse how home, bodies and movement are reconfigured through multiple contexts of care. I argue that it is only in constellations of care that produce movements that residents attempt to make, but are unable to make on their own, that the potential to become at home is made possible. Based on 12 months of fieldwork in two nursing homes in metropolitan Adelaide, South Australia, this research attends closely to the sensory extensions (Dennis 2007) and restrictions of residents’ bodies vis-à-vis their engagements with other people and things. From the taste of a home cooked meal, to the touch of staff and family members, medications, handrails, carpeted floors and walking aids, residents’ ageing and declining bodies respond to, and may resist, assistance to walk, stand or eat. Care plans, staff and equipment, as this thesis will show, can also restrain residents’ bodies, inhibiting their movements and their becoming at home. This thesis draws on Deleuze and Guattari’s (1977, 1988) theories of becoming and desiring production to expand Jackson’s notion of home (1995, 2002) and ‘existential imperative’ (2002, p. 14) to propose that home is a matter of becoming-at-home-in-the-world. Key to my argument is how residents experience an innermost drive to move, and in examining how their urge to move is responded to, I demonstrate the multiple and at times contested forces that can propel residents to sit, to stand, or to put one foot ahead of the other. It is through this Deleuzian approach that I detail the multiple persons and things that enact and produce assemblages (Deleuze & Guattari 1988) of care. In so doing, I demonstrate that an ethically responsive care, or the care that was communicated and experienced as ‘right’ by residents, requires tinkering (Mol, Moser & Pols 2010) to achieve a balance between inclusion and autonomy (Rapport 2018). From moment to moment, and day-to-day, as bodies age, decline and eventually die, each resident requires different assemblages of care to move and to become at home. Examining the varieties of experience for nursing home residents through the theoretical lens of becoming at-home-in-the-world, this thesis provides new knowledge about the interrelations between movement and care, and the generative and productive affects of walking, standing and eating in residents’ lives. I argue that this ethnographically informed understanding of the sensibilities and potentialities of movement presents a challenge to clinical constructions of bodily and cognitive impairment and is at odds with aged care discourses and practices that may render the lives of nursing home residents inactive or meaningless and thus further constrain their existential and bodily potentials.

Tranquil spaces can be found and made in the city and their promotion and use by residents and visitors is an important means of building resilience. Studies have shown that spaces that are rated by visitors as tranquil are more likely to produce higher levels of relaxation and less anxiety that should ultimately result in health and well-being benefits. Such spaces can therefore be classed as restorative environments. Tranquil spaces are characterized by a soundscape dominated by natural sounds and low levels of man-made noise. In addition, the presence of vegetation and wild life has been shown to be an important contributory factor. Levels of rated tranquillity can be reliably predicted using a previously developed model TRAPT and then used to design and identify tranquil spaces, improve existing green spaces and develop Tranquillity Trails to encourage usage. Tranquillity Trails are walking routes that have been designed to enable residents and visitors to reflect and recover from stress while receiving the benefits of healthy exercise. AbstractIntense urbanization process in Brazil and Latin America has increasingly limited young children, since birth, to access outdoor spaces, especially green areas. Moreover, as conceptions of babies in domestic care support confinement practices, apprehending infants’ constitutive specificities as being intertwined with broader socio-cultural contexts requires further investigation. Notwithstanding the challenges, Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) institutions can be promising places to provide babies with daily contacts and appropriation of external areas amid an expanded collective experience. This chapter tackles the process of insertion and appropriation of outdoor spaces for infants and toddlers. We bring a case study from a Brazilian daycare centre with planned multiple outdoor environments, diversified spatial arrangements and natural elements. The empirical material, referring to the transition year of a group of under-twos, includes monthly recordings of everyday routine, interviews, field notes, institutional documents. We describe and analyze various outdoor spaces and socio-spatial practices of the daycare centre based on the cultural-historical perspective of the Network of Meanings. In the first semester, environments organized in semi-open areas connected to closed spaces were more frequently used. Whereas mainly in the second semester, given walking onset and greater motor resourcefulness, the going and appropriation of green areas unfolded as a gradual process not short of struggles. Substantial planning, projects and educational situations put forward by multiple social actors within a multidisciplinary approach modulated alternation of spaces and facilitated exchanges with peers, older children and adults – including family members.

Abstract This chapter will discuss the findings of a year-long survey of recreational walkers in the English Lake District to highlight the variety of contextual drivers of recreational walking and the motivations and experiences of recreational walkers. The research sought to tease out differences between walkers to develop a typology of walking tourists, and explore the range of associated motivations, the nature of people's walking behaviour and route choices, and their attitudes towards a range of elements related to walking and outdoor recreation. Most prominently this discussion will convey ideas on serious and casual walkers and the walks they choose, with links to the notions of serious and casual leisure proposed by Stebbins (1982).

AbstractTravel planning is a long and tedious process for tourists since it requires processing a vast amount of information. Recommender systems can be used to facilitate the process of scoring points-of-interests (POIs) according to the travelers’ interests and creating feasible itineraries. However, itinerary planning is personal and each itinerary created must reflect the interest of the traveler as well as his/her travel style. In this paper, we extend the creation of multi-day round trip itineraries by adding different personalization options such as the pace of the traveler and diversity level of the route. The information about the travel style of the user is used to personalize the visiting duration of each POI and to create routes for each day that follow the constraints defined by users. We conducted a user study through a mobile application and the results show that the added personalization options improved the recommended multi-day round trip walking tours from a user’s perspective.

Due to the world pandemic 2020, the summer tourist season in Varna faced a number of challenges. While the changes in tourism could be considered as an opportunity to evolve towards best practices, the professional provision of tourist services in the summer season depended very much on the professionalism of the service providers and their proper training. Due to the safety precautions some of the tourist guiding techniques are now leaning towards the usual techniques from the practice of mountain guides. Responsible professional leadership skills imply that a comfortable and safe walking routine will be provided not only during trekking, but also during a short city walking tour. The paper is looking into seven parallels between the two types of organized walking routine, and the issues of supervision by a responsible guide.

Some recent projects have required pipeline routings from cluster wells to platforms or FPSOs along undulating seabed with lengthy route bends, escarpment and change of slope features. The operational in-place stability of the relatively light insulated pipelines was the primary design concern, and was compounded by interactions between seabed induced global buckling and pipeline walking due to significant seabed slope. In addition, onerous weld defect criteria limited the extent of allowable bending to which the HP/HT pipelines can be subject during their through-life operation. This necessitated the development of reliable planned buckle schemes which would work with periodic pipeline anchors placed along the lengths of the routes of these pipelines to control walking and associated bend and planned buckle pull-out during routine start-up/shutdown operational cycles. Pipe-soil interaction guidance such as SAFEBUCK and project-specific pipe soil testing results had significant influences on realistic simulation of through-life in-place stability. A state of the art reliability tool was developed for these projects based on guidance available in the public domain and the characteristic 3D global buckle formations evident along operational pipelines with a significantly undulating seabed.

Current passive prosthetic ankles are lighter, simpler, and less expensive than powered prosthetic ankles. These current passive designs, however, do not provide adequate torque at the instant when it is needed to propel the body forward. This paper presents a novel 2 degree of freedom (DOF) passive compliant prosthetic ankle that uses a network of conventional springs. One DOF allows the lower leg component to compress when the weight of the amputee is applied during walking. The second DOF allows rotation about the prosthetic ankle joint. The force generated along the leg during walking is converted into ankle torque used to propel the body forward during push-off. An optimization routine is used to select the stiffness values and connection locations of the springs used in the compliant mechanism. The optimization yields a design that generates a torque-deflection profile that is very similar to that of a natural ankle. The mechanism demonstrates apparent active behavior (negative spring constant) at the ankle during push-off without using active components.

In this study, a model of femur which resembles bone natural structure has been developed. The model initially consists of a solid shell representing cortical bone encompassing a cubical network of interconnected rods with circular cross-sections representing trabecular bone part. A computational efficient program has been developed which iteratively changes the structure of trabecular bone by keeping the local stress in the structure within a defined stress range. The stress is controlled by either enhancing existing beam elements or removing beams from the initial trabecular frame structure. Trabecular bone structure is obtained for two load cases: walking and stair climbing. The results show that as the magnitude of the loads increase, the internal structure gets denser in critical zones. The higher density is achieved using loading associated with the stair climbing. Walking which is considered as the routine daily activity, results in the less internal density in different regions of the bone. The results show that the converged bone architecture consisting of rods and plates are consistent with the natural bone morphology of femur. Furthermore, the bone volume fraction at the critical regions of the converged structure is in a good agreement with previously measured data obtained from combinations of Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) and Computed Tomography (CT).

In the Philippines, physical inactivity is a significant concern among the elderly population. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most elderly people have stayed inside their residences, limiting to their routine requirements of daily physical activities and prevention in their exposure to the virus. Alcohol consumption and motivation contributes to how elderly population were limited to basic physical activities. This paper aimed to determine the factors affecting less physical inactivity among the ninety-seven Filipino elderly population through multiple regression analysis. Results were gathered through online surveys and showed that alcohol consumption (p-value = 0.015) and motivation (p-value = 0.000) contribute to how elderly population were limited to do basic physical activities. Recommendations include a weekly physical activity guide plan and low-intensity physical activities such as walking and stretching without compromising government restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract The global COVID-19 pandemic has inevitably made disinfection a daily routine to ensure the safety of public and private spaces. However, the existing disinfection procedures are time-consuming and require intensive human labor to apply chemical-based disinfectant onto contaminated surfaces. In this paper, a robot disinfection system is presented to increase the automation of the disinfection task to assist humans in performing routine disinfection safely and efficiently. This paper presents a semi-autonomous quadruped robot called LASER-D for performing disinfection in cluttered environments. The robot is equipped with a spray-based disinfection system and leverages the body motion to control the spray action without an extra stabilization mechanism. The spraying unit is mounted on the robot’s back and controlled by the robot computer. The control architecture is designed based on force control, resulting in navigating rough terrains and the flexibility in controlling the body motion during standing and walking for the disinfection task. The robot also uses the vision system to improve localization and maintain desired distance to the disinfection surface. The system incorporates image processing capability to evaluate disinfected regions with high accuracy. This feedback is then used to adjust the disinfection plan to guarantee that all assigned areas are disinfected properly. The system is also equipped with highly integrated simulation software to design, simulate and evaluate disinfection plans effectively. This work has allowed the robot to successfully carry out effective disinfection experiments while safely traversing through cluttered environments, climb stairs/slopes, and navigate on slippery surfaces.

It is widely accepted that the mechanical environment within the knee, or more specifically, increased or altered stresses or strains generated within the cartilage, is a leading cause of knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, a significant unfulfilled technological challenge in musculoskeletal biomechanics and OA research has been determining the dynamic mechanical environment of the cartilage (and other components) resulting from routine and non-routine physical movements. There are two methods of investigating musculoskeletal joint mechanics that have been used to date: 1) forward and inverse multibody dynamic simulations of human movement and 2) detailed quasi-static finite element modeling of individual joints. The overwhelming majority of work has been focused on musculoskeletal multibody dynamics modeling. This method, in combination with experimental motion capture and analysis, has been integral to understanding torques, muscle and ligament forces, and reaction forces occurring at the joint during activities such as walking, running, squatting, and jumping as well as providing key insights into musculoskeletal motor control schemes. However, multibody dynamics simulations do not allow for the detailed continuum level analysis of the mechanical environment of the cartilage and other knee joint structures (meniscus, ligaments, and underlying bone) within the knee during physical activities. This is a critical technology gap that is required to understand the relationship between functional or injurious loading of the knee and cartilage degradation. We have developed a detailed neuromuscularly activated dynamic finite element model of the human lower body and have used this model to simultaneously determine the dynamic muscle forces, joint kinematics, contact forces, and detailed (e.g., continuum) stresses and strains within the knee (cartilage, meniscus, ligaments, and bone) during several increasingly complex neuromuscularly controlled and actuated lower limb movements. Motion at each joint is controlled explicitly via deformable cartilage-to-cartilage surface contact at each articular surface (rather than idealized as simple revolute or ball and socket joints). The major muscles activating the lower limb are explicitly modeled with Hill-type active force generating springs using anatomical muscle insertion points and geometric wrapping. Muscle activation dynamics were determined via a constrained optimization scheme to minimize muscle activation energy. Time histories of the mechanical environment of all soft tissues within the knee are determined for a simulated leg extension.

Engineering critical assessments (ECA) have increasingly become a routine part of pipeline design to determine tolerable flaw sizes for weld defects. These assessments are now being applied to pipeline systems in deeper water with increased loadings arising from responses to thermal and pressure cycling. Often these are flowline systems in which fatigue damage is exacerbated by the presence of aggressive internal conditions. Deep water flowlines operating at high temperatures and pressures need to be designed to accommodate issues such as significant end expansion, walking and lateral buckling. Offshore flowlines are subject to large thermal transients particularly during shut down. These thermal transients tend to vary from about 200°F to ambient temperature and place a large fatigue demand on the pipelines. The transients typically are very low frequency events with high amplitudes, which can lead to lateral buckling. The loading rates associated with the transients are very slow, hence the toughness properties of the material in environments at low loading rates is important. The pipelines are also subject to high stress and thus need to have good toughness properties. Riser materials are also subject to significant fatigue loading, though under conditions different from flow lines. They are typically pre-loaded and operate under smaller amplitudes of loading and at higher frequencies associated with wave motion. Currently for a number of offshore sour service pipelines, Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA) for flaw acceptance criteria are performed using knockdown factors up to 50X on fatigue crack growth rates. The toughness values used for the analysis are performed assuming a CTOD of 0.1 mm. In order to develop material chemistry and heat treatment procedures for offshore pipelines, it is important to be able to understand the fracture toughness behavior as well in sour environments. In order to evaluate the safety of offshore flowlines and risers applications fatigue and fracture toughness properties of X80 parent pipe material in sour environments were determined. The data developed was used to develop an ECA framework for flowlines and riser applications.

In the last few years some ‘long’ HPHT (high pressure high temperature) offshore pipelines have been required to be routed across challenging seabed terrains such as salt diapirs and deep trenches with relatively large OOS (out of straightness) and steep slopes. This has given rise to a combined design concern of lateral buckling with pipeline walking. Typically anchor points in the form of caisson piles as well as buckle sites in the form of sleepers or buoyancy modules maybe required in the vicinity of the seabed features to release the compressive forces associated with the high pressure and temperature loads in a controlled manner and to prevent the pipelines from migrating down slope during operation. The instigation of buckle sites can essentially divide any ‘long’ pipelines into a number of short sections with different walking behaviour due to varying seabed slopes and varying pressure and temperature gradients at locations along the route. In addition pipeline anchors influence the development of any planned buckle site and thus limit the extent of cyclic feed-in and/or pull-out. This integrated mechanism is termed buckling walking interaction within this paper. The prevailing methodology and numerical modelling of pipeline walking usually evaluates ratcheting end expansions by means of ‘short’ and overall ‘long’ pipe lengths which ignore or consider the existence of buckle sites along any pipeline route respectively. This paper presents a general-purpose study on the phenomenon of buckling walking interaction considering a typical pipe route configuration with anchors and buckles along its length. Aspects such as the cyclic evolution of mode shapes of buckles and the effect of soil berm resistance on buckling walking interaction are explored. Finally the design application of buckling walking interaction for ‘long’ cyclically constrained pipelines with buckles and anchors is discussed.

The major US household travel surveys do not ask the right questions to understand mobility in Walkable Neighborhoods. Yet few subjects can be more important for sustainability and real economic growth based on all things of value, including sustainability, affordability, and quality of life. Walkable Neighborhoods are a system of land use, transportation, and transportation pricing. They are areas with attractive walking distances of residential and local business land uses of sufficient density to support enough business and transit, with mobility comparable to suburbia and without owning an auto. Mobility is defined as the travel time typically spent to reach destinations outside the home, not trips among other destinations that are not related to the home base. A home round trip returns home the same day, a way of defining routine trips based on the home location. Trip times and purposes, taken together, constitute travel time budgets and add up to total travel time in the course of a day. Furthermore, for Walkable Neighborhoods, the analysis focuses on the trips most important for daily mobility. Mismeasurement consists of including trips that are not real trips to destinations outside the home, totaling 48 percent of trips. It includes purposes that are not short trips functional for walk times and mixing of different trips into single purposes, resulting in even less useful data. The surveys do not separate home round trips from other major trip types such as work round trips and overnight trips. The major household surveys collect vast amounts of information without insight into the data needed for neighborhood sustainability. The methodology of statistics gets in the way of using statistics for the deeper insights we need. Household travel surveys need to be reframed to provide the information needed to understand and improve Walkable Neighborhoods. This research makes progress on the issue, but mismeasurement prevents a better understanding of the issue.

Public, fixed-route transit services most commonly operate on public streets. In addition, transit passengers must use sidewalks to access transit stops and stations. However, streets and sidewalks are under the jurisdiction of municipalities, not transit agencies. Various municipal policies, practices, and decisions affect transit operations, rider convenience, and passenger safety. Thus, these government entities have an important influence over the quality, safety, and convenience of transit services in their jurisdictions. This research identified municipal policies and practices that affect public transport providers’ ability to deliver transit services. They were found from a comprehensive literature review, interviews and discussions with five local transit agencies in the U.S., five public transportation experts and staff from five California cities. The city policies and practices identified fall into the following five categories: Infrastructure for buses, including bus lanes, signal treatments, curbside access; Infrastructure for pedestrians walking and bicycling to, and waiting at, transit stops and stations; Internal transportation planning policies and practices; Land development review policies; Regional and metropolitan planning organization (MPO) issues. The understanding, acknowledgment, and implementation of policies and practices identified in this report can help municipalities proactively work with local transit providers to more efficiently and effectively operate transit service and improve passenger comfort and safety on city streets.

The rapid growth in population and related demand for travel during the past few decades has had a catalytic effect on traffic congestion, air quality, and safety in many urban areas. Transportation managers and planners have planned for new facilities to cater to the needs of users of alternative modes of transportation (e.g., public transportation, walking, and bicycling) over the next decade. However, there are no widely accepted methods, nor there is enough evidence to justify whether such plans are instrumental in improving mobility of the transportation system. Therefore, this project researches the operational performance of urban roads with heterogeneous traffic conditions to improve the mobility and reliability of people and goods. A 4-mile stretch of the Blue Line light rail transit (LRT) extension, which connects Old Concord Rd and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s main campus on N Tryon St in Charlotte, North Carolina, was considered for travel time reliability analysis. The influence of crosswalks, sidewalks, trails, greenways, on-street bicycle lanes, bus/LRT routes and stops/stations, and street network characteristics on travel time reliability were comprehensively considered from a multimodal perspective. Likewise, a 2.5-mile-long section of the Blue Line LRT extension, which connects University City Blvd and Mallard Creek Church Rd on N Tryon St in Charlotte, North Carolina, was considered for simulation-based operational analysis. Vissim traffic simulation software was used to compute and compare delay, queue length, and maximum queue length at nine intersections to evaluate the influence of vehicles, LRT, pedestrians, and bicyclists, individually and/or combined. The statistical significance of variations in travel time reliability were particularly less in the case of links on N Tryon St with the Blue Line LRT extension. However, a decrease in travel time reliability on some links was observed on the parallel route (I-85) and cross-streets. While a decrease in vehicle delay on northbound and southbound approaches of N Tryon St was observed in most cases after the LRT is in operation, the cross-streets of N Tryon St incurred a relatively higher increase in delay after the LRT is in operation. The current pedestrian and bicycling activity levels seemed insignificant to have an influence on vehicle delay at intersections. The methodological approaches from this research can be used to assess the performance of a transportation facility and identify remedial solutions from a multimodal perspective.
