Consumers are increasingly interacting with automated systems for various purposes (e.g., smart speaker, vehicle control). One of the most popular ways they communicate with these systems is via the spoken auditory channel (listening and speaking). However, most of these systems tend to default to a female voice. In addition, many specifically use a White-sounding female voice. While prior work has investigated how attributes of age and gender influence perceptions of voiced automation, an additional vocal attribute of humanness has not been well researched -race. The specific goal of this project is to examine how more inclusively designed AI voices (e.g. exhibiting attributes of race) affect Black users’ attitudes toward autonomous technology. Results are expected to show more preferential attitudes when automation exhibits similar vocal attributes to the user. Findings will add to our understanding of how a deliberately more inclusive design affects an underrepresented population’s attitudes toward technology.

As an aural mode, an interviewer’s voice is an important part of telephone surveys. A speaker’s voice can convey information about his or her trustworthiness and confidence, among other attributes. Consequently, respondents may perceive attributes of interviewers from their voices. We evaluated how five perceived attributes of interviewers (expertise, confidence, reliability, trustworthiness, and easiness to understand) are associated with interviewer voice characteristics (pitch, intonation, speech rate, and disfluencies) and whether this varies by types of question and interviewer characteristics. Overall, listeners perceived interviewers’ attributes from their voices. Interviewers with higher pitched voices, moderate intonation, a faster pace, and fewer disfluencies were rated more positively, but these ratings differed somewhat for socially undesirable and complex questions. Reading questions at the recommended speech rate of two words per second leads to negative perceptions of interviewers.

Style transfer for out-of-domain (OOD) singing voice synthesis (SVS) focuses on generating high-quality singing voices with unseen styles (such as timbre, emotion, pronunciation, and articulation skills) derived from reference singing voice samples. However, the endeavor to model the intricate nuances of singing voice styles is an arduous task, as singing voices possess a remarkable degree of expressiveness. Moreover, existing SVS methods encounter a decline in the quality of synthesized singing voices in OOD scenarios, as they rest upon the assumption that the target vocal attributes are discernible during the training phase. To overcome these challenges, we propose StyleSinger, the first singing voice synthesis model for zero-shot style transfer of out-of-domain reference singing voice samples. StyleSinger incorporates two critical approaches for enhanced effectiveness: 1) the Residual Style Adaptor (RSA) which employs a residual quantization module to capture diverse style characteristics in singing voices, and 2) the Uncertainty Modeling Layer Normalization (UMLN) to perturb the style attributes within the content representation during the training phase and thus improve the model generalization. Our extensive evaluations in zero-shot style transfer undeniably establish that StyleSinger outperforms baseline models in both audio quality and similarity to the reference singing voice samples. Voice conversion (VC) consists of digitally altering the voice of an individual to manipulate part of its content, primarily its identity, while maintaining the rest unchanged. Research in neural VC has accomplished considerable breakthroughs with the capacity to falsify a voice identity using a small amount of data with a highly realistic rendering. This paper goes beyond voice identity manipulation and presents an original neural architecture that allows the manipulation of voice attributes (e.g., gender and age). The proposed architecture is inspired by the fader network, transferring the same ideas to voice manipulation. The information conveyed by the speech signal is disentangled into interpretative voice attributes by means of minimizing adversarial loss to make the encoded information mutually independent while preserving the capacity to generate a speech signal from the disentangled codes. During inference for voice conversion, the disentangled voice attributes can be manipulated and the speech signal can be generated accordingly. For experimental evaluation, the proposed method is applied to the task of voice gender conversion using the freely available VCTK dataset. Quantitative measurements of mutual information between the variables of speaker identity and speaker gender show that the proposed architecture can learn gender-independent representation of speakers. Additional measurements of speaker recognition indicate that speaker identity can be recognized accurately from the gender-independent representation. Finally, a subjective experiment conducted on the task of voice gender manipulation shows that the proposed architecture can convert voice gender with very high efficiency and good naturalness.

PurposeCustomers' continuous value creation (e.g. voice) is an important research issue for the success of brand virtual community (BVC) and new product development, while it is rarely studied from a firm perspective. The purpose of the present study is to investigate how firm attributes exert influences on continuous voice intention in brand virtual communities.Design/methodology/approachThe data were collected through a survey in mobile brand virtual communities in China, and 291 valid responses for data analysis were included to test the research model by using partial least squares (PLSs).FindingsThe results show that intrinsic motivation to voice is positively associated with continuous voice intention. Furthermore, the impact of brand identification on intrinsic motivation is found to be fully mediated by community identification. Customer orientation has a positive effect on perceived openness, and both customer orientation and perceived openness positively affect customers' brand identification and community identification.Originality/valueAlthough prior studies have examined some variables relevant to voice behavior, few studies have recognized the influence of firm attributes toward the BVC on sustained voice intention. To fill this research gap, the authors propose a research model to shed light on the role of firm attributes by classifying them into brand- vs community-based firm attributes, which affect intrinsic motivation through two types of social identification, namely brand identification and community identification.

Face-based speech synthesis provides a practical solution to generate voices from human faces. However, directly using 2D face images leads to the problems of uninterpretability and entanglement. In this paper, to address the issues, we introduce 3D face shape which (1) has an anatomical relationship between voice characteristics, partaking in the "bone conduction" of human timbre production, and (2) is naturally independent of irrelevant factors by excluding the blending process. We devise a three-stage framework to generate speech from 3D face shapes. Fully considering timbre production in anatomical and acquired terms, our framework incorporates three additional relevant attributes including face texture, facial features, and demographics. Experiments and subjective tests demonstrate our method can generate utterances matching faces well, with good audio quality and voice diversity. We also explore and visualize how the voice changes with the face. Case studies show that our method upgrades the face-voice inference to personalized custom-made voice creating, revealing a promising prospect in virtual human and dubbing applications.

Literature has mainly analyzed the technical attributes of voice for enterprise technical applications, such as voice signature and speech recognition. This paper aims at identifying voice and speech attributes that reflect sentiment and affect (positively or negatively) customer satisfaction levels in voice interactions. The paper used method triangulation that utilizes multiple data sources to gain comprehensive understanding of the domain, including auditory observations, focus group interviews, customer survey, and a review of recent academic studies. The findings indicate that customer experience and satisfaction are influenced by the relative values of voice pitch between the CSR (customer service representative) and the customer. The major conclusion of the study suggests that voice fundamental pitch, speech rate, voice amplitude, and other communication parameters might deploy hidden power and affect service interaction's results. The study opens a new venue for research on social interaction adjustment from the CSR's perspective and from the customer's standpoint.

The reliability of listeners’ ratings of voice quality is a central issue in voice research because of the clinical primacy of such ratings and because they are the standard against which other measures are evaluated. However, an extensive literature review indicates that both intrarater and interrater reliability fluctuate greatly from study to study. Further, our own data indicate that ratings of vocal roughness vary widely across individual clinicians, with a single voice often receiving nearly the full range of possible ratings. No model or theoretical framework currently exists to explain these variations, although such a model might guide development of efficient, valid, and standardized clinical protocols for voice evaluation. We propose a theoretical framework that attributes variability in ratings to several sources (including listeners’ backgrounds and biases, the task used to gather ratings, interactions between listeners and tasks, and random error). This framework may guide development of new clinical voice and speech evaluation protocols, ultimately leading to more reliable perceptual ratings and a better understanding of the perceptual qualities of pathological voices.

The purpose of this single-subject case study was to determine if vocal changes can be used to implicate deceit based on a suspect’s involuntary vocal responses when placed in a high stress situation such as being interrogated for a crime. This study also identified justification for the use of SLPs in the criminal justice system for the purpose of voice analysis. 10 truthful and 10 deceitful statements were analyzed from a suspect charged with the crime of murder using the voice analysis software Praat to determine differences in vocal attributes with varying speech characteristics. These statements were analyzed in the areas of intensity, hesitations/pausing, speech rate, and disfluencies. It was found that changes in maximum intensity and total number of words per statement implicate that a person is being deceitful.

La Reconnaissance Automatique du Locuteur (RAL) a été intégrée dans des applications critiques, allant des services d'assistance personnalisés aux systèmes de sécurité et enquêtes criminelles. Son objectif est de déterminer automatiquement si deux échantillons vocaux proviennent du même locuteur. Ces systèmes reposent principalement sur des réseaux neuronaux (DNN) complexes et présentent leurs résultats par une seule valeur. Malgré les performances élevées démontrées par ces systèmes, ils sont incapable de fournir des informations transparentes sur la nature des représentations vocales, leur encodage et leur utilisation dans le processus de prise de décision. Ce manque de transparence pose d'importants défis pour aborder les préoccupations éthiques et légales, en particulier dans des applications à haut risque telles que la criminalistique. Cette thèse introduit une approche en trois étapes basée sur l'apprentissage profond, conçue pour fournir des résultats de RAL interprétables et explicables. Dans la première étape, nous représentons un extrait vocal par la présence ou l'absence d'un ensemble d'attributs vocaux, partagés entre des groupes de locuteurs et sélectionnés pour être discriminants entre les locuteurs. Cette information est encodée par un vecteur binaire où un coefficient égal à 1 représente la présence de l'attribut correspondant dans l'extrait vocal et 0 son absence. Ce modèle binaire et basé sur les attributs facilite l'interprétabilité et permet une meilleure manipulation de l'information vocale. Les résultats montrent que les représentations obtenues sont plus interprétables mais qu'elles sacrifient légèrement les performances de RAL. Dans la deuxième étape, l'objectif est d'assurer le calcul transparent du rapport de vraisemblance (LR), facilitant une évaluation informative de la valeur de preuve vocale en criminalistique. Nous proposons donc une estimation de LR basée sur l'attribut binaire (BA-LR), qui décompose le processus en sous-processus indépendants, chacun dédié à un attribut. Un LR d'attribut est un LR estimé en utilisant uniquement la présence ou l'absence de l'attribut et sa description, définie par trois paramètres comportementaux explicites. Le LR final est calculé comme le produit des LR d'attribut, en supposant leur indépendance. Cette estimation permet un calcul transparent du LR et une compréhension de la valeur des preuves. Il fournit également des explications détaillées sur la contribution des informations de chaque attribut à la valeur finale du LR, aidant les jurés et les juges dans leur prise de décision. Dans la troisième étape, nous menons une découverte de la nature des attributs. Cette investigation utilise des techniques statistiques, des modèles de substitution ainsi que des stratégies de rétropropagation pour fournir une description des attributs en informations acoustiques, phonétiques et phonémiques. Automatic speaker recognition (ASpR) has been integrated into critical applications, ranging from customised assistant services to security systems and forensic investigations. It aims to automatically determine whether two voice samples originate from the same speaker. These systems primarily rely on complex deep neural networks (DNN) and present their results by a single value. Despite the high performance demonstrated by DNN-based ASpR systems, they struggle to provide transparent insights into the nature of speech representations, its encoding, and its use in decision-making process. This lack of transparency presents significant challenges in addressing ethical and legal concerns, particularly in high-stakes applications such as forensics. This thesis introduces a three-step methodology based on deep learning, designed to provide interpretable and explainable ASpR results. In the first step, we represent a speech extract by the presence or absence of a set of speech attributes, shared among groups of speakers and selected to be speaker discriminant. This information is encoded by a binary vector where a coefficient equal to 1 represent the presence of the corresponding attribute in the speech extract and 0 its absence. This binary and attribute-based modelling facilitates interpretability and allows for a better handle of the speech information. The results show that the obtained representations are more interpretable but they sacrifice a slight loss in ASpR performance. In the second step, the goal is to ensure transparent computation of the likelihood ratio (LR), thereby facilitating a more informed assessment of the value of speech evidence in a courtroom setting. We therefore propose the Binary-Attribute-based LR (BA-LR) framework, that breaks down the scoring process into independent sub-processes, each dedicated to an attribute. An attribute-LR is a LR estimated using only the presence or absence of the attribute and its description, defined by three explicit behavioral parameters. The final LR is calculated as the product of the attribute-LRs, assuming independence between them. This framework enables transparent LR computation and a clearer understanding of the value of evidence. It also provides detailed explanations of the contribution of each attribute's information to the final LR value, aiding juries and judges in decision-making. In the third step, we conduct a discovery of the nature of attributes. This investigation employs statistical techniques, surrogate models as well as backpropagation and alignment strategies to provide a description of attributes in terms of acoustic, phonetic and phonemic information. The obtained explanations serve as a valuable tool for phoneticians to interpret the contributing attributes to a given LR. Additionally, our three-step approach is validated through the application of BA-LR on a forensically realistic dataset. In such context, we apply a Logistic Regression model to handle the mismatch between the training conditions and a real-world scenarios. Results demonstrate the robustness and the generalisation ability of BA-LR in a forensic context. Overall, this thesis opens a new perspective on explainable ASpR, by proposing a promising solution for a transparent decision making, with a level of performance comparable to SOTA systems. It provides forensic practitioners as well as the court with explanations to comprehend the evidential value and serves as a discovery tool for phoneticians, aiding them in better understanding and interpreting speech information. This thesis validates that packet aggregation is a viable technique to increase call capacity for Voice over Internet Protocol over wireless mesh networks. Wireless mesh networks are attractive ways to provide voice services to rural communities. Due to the ad-hoc routing nature of mesh networks, packet loss and delay can reduce voice quality. Even on non-mesh networks, voice quality is reduced by high overhead, associated with the transmission of multiple small packets. Packet aggregation techniques are proven to increase VoIP performance and thus can be deployed in wireless mesh networks. Kernel level packet aggregation was initially implemented and tested on a small mesh network of PCs running Linux, and standard baseline vs. aggregation tests were conducted with a realistic voice traffic profile in hop-to-hop mode. Modifications of the kernel were then transferred to either end of a nine node 'mesh potato' network and those tests were conducted with only the end nodes modified to perform aggregation duties. Packet aggregation increased call capacity expectedly, while quality of service was maintained in both instances, and hop-to-hop aggregation outperformed the end-to-end configuration 4:1. However, implementing hop-to-hop in a scalable fashion is prohibitive, due to the extensive kernel level debugging that must be done to achieve the call capacity increase. Therefore, end-to-end call capacity increase is an acceptable compromise for eventual scalable deployment of voice over wireless mesh networks.

Service robot as a new generation of trends, but it is undeniable that its application results are not up to expectations, one of the biggest problems is that service stiff and is difficult for the users to understand. In order to achieve a more natural and fluent human-robot service, we according to the research of HRI to choose the auditory and visual information as factors for discusses the main trend of users need in different application fields. In addition, other social factors that have influence on interaction evaluation, such as robot appearance, speech speed and interaction distance, are taken as control variables to ensure the correctness of the research results. According to the research results, different pitch levels can affect users' evaluation of warmth and competence. Besides, when the robot state was presented with different color lights that will influence the preference and feeling, especially neutral colors showed the best overall performance. In terms of application, there was no significant difference in user ratings between business, education and home companionship. Simultaneously, there’s interaction between variables, the preference of lights was influenced in applications which has higher professional demand. At the same time, the female users have more obvious preferences of interactive elements. By and large, different applications and user genders will influence the result of human-robot interaction elements. Although there have the difficult points of current technology, but we hope to achieve better human-robot interaction quality in the future through the discussion of users' interactive needs of robot.

In line with the tendency to integrate Computing, Communication and Consumer Electronics, the Mobile Voice over IP(VOIP) products with cheaper values and offering many kinds of functions, are getting more popular. Because of VOIP’s cheaper values, convenient communication and offering many kinds of functions, it has become the product with the most potential among communication industry. However there is little research concerning Consumer adoption towards VOIP at present; therefore the purpose of this research is to understand which product attributes VOIP consumers pay most attention to, and from the point of view of market segments to discuss the differences in product preference. This is necessary to help companies form their marketing strategy. In this research, the Roger’s adoption model is used as a conceptual framework, and the AIO lifestyle variable is used as a basis of market segmentation. VOIP product attributes and demographic factors are used as independent variables. Consumption reality variables describe the behavior of consumers. This research discusses only the machine of VOIP. The sample is drawn from the residents of Taipei district who use the network of broadband transmission. The sampling frame is the visitors to the multimedia Exhibition in Taipei World Trade Center during February, 2002. The results show: VOIP consumers can be successfully segmented by lifestyle variable, such as “Fashion Independent Buyer”, “Impetuous Independent Buyer”, and “Convenience social Buyer”. Among the three market segments, Much more significance are demographic variables, purchase motive variable, information search, product attributes evaluation criteria, and consumption lifestyle variables.

This chapter discusses the growing tendency toward aestheticization of the spoken voice in cinema. It provides a taxonomy of different means of speech aestheticization, including poetic speech; accelerated and decelerated speech; wordy or dialogue-heavy soundtracks; heightened voice and dialogue in literary adaptations; fetishization of the voice; technologically manipulated speech; aesthetically marked speech resulting from distinct physical or psychological attributes; comic timing as musicality in speech; and interaction of voices with environmental sounds or aestheticized non-diegetic sounds. Undoubtedly, this phenomenon is bound up with proliferation of digital technologies, which means that previous inaudible sounds can be perceived with increased clarity and sonic manipulation is accomplished with little effort. Occupying a liminal zone between speech and song, flowing speech in cinema is suspended in the middle stage of what Rick Altman calls “audio dissolve,” where the actor in a musical inflects her speech aesthetically while transitioning into song and dance.

The Ḥanbalīs, as the most consistently traditionalist of the Sunnī law schools, had a disproportionate impact on the development of Islamic theology by providing a unified voice againstKalām. Many Ḥanbalīs rejectedKalāmreinterpretation (taʾwīl) of anthropomorphism in the Qurʾān and Hadith and took a non-cognitive approach that affirmed God’s attributes without inquiring into their meaning or modality (bi-lā kayf). In the eleventh to thirteenth centuries, Abū Yaʿla, Ibn ʿAqīl, and Ibn Jawzī adoptedKalāmviews to varying degrees but faced stiff opposition from within their own Ḥanbalī ranks. In the fourteenth century Ibn Taymiyya also rejectedKalāmtheology but sought to interpret the meanings, although not the modalities, of God’s attributes to accord with his unique vision of God’s perpetual creativity. Ibn Taymiyya’s theological ideas were further developed by his student Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya and adopted by the Wahhābīs in the eighteenth century.

This book examines the uses and meanings of women’s voices in British society and musical culture between 1780 and 1850. As previous scholars have argued, during these decades patriarchal power increasingly came to rest upon a particular understanding of the essentially different nature of male and female physiology and psychology. As a result, this book contends, the female voice—believed to blend both physical and mental attributes—became central to maintaining, and challenging, gendered power structures. The book argues that the varying ways women used their voices—the sounds that they made, as much as the words they spoke or sang—were understood by contemporaries as aural markers of different kinds of femininity. Consequently, contemporary divisions over feminine ideals were both expressed and contested through women’s use of their voices and audiences’ responses to them. Following an introduction that lays out the book’s theoretical frameworks and main arguments, the first three chapters explore how contemporary responses to different styles of female vocality were shaped by class, religious, and national discourses, through an exploration of conduct literature, letters, diaries, life-writing, and music criticism and reportage in newspapers and periodicals. Two case studies then extend the argument further through detailed analysis of the use and meaning of women’s voices on the part of both amateur and professional female singers respectively. A closing epilogue draws together the book’s major themes and discusses their implications for the gender history of this period.

Following Pylkkänen (2002), among others, many of the functions of the vP have been distributed between two independent projections: VoiceP and vP. Pylkkänen proposed a “bundling” parameter: some languages project a single bundled Voice/vP, and all functions depend on that single projection, and others project VoiceP and vP separately, and functions are distributed. The chapter first reviews the roles ascribed to these projections: (i) external argument introduction, (ii) event argument introduction, (iii) accusative case checking, (iv) introduction of causative or inchoative semantics, (v) verbalizing of nonverbal material, and (vi) demarcating a cycle. The chapter then reviews support for Pylkkänen’s parametric view of Voice-bundling from, e.g., Hiaki, Turkish, Korean, and English. Results on causatives from Key (2013) and Jung (2014) suggest that the projection sequence dominating v may form part of a predetermined projection hierarchy. The constraint against stacking productive morphological causatives may thus be attributed to the extended verbal projection.

This chapter examines the syntactic and semantic properties of heads, e.g. Voice, Appl, and little p, that add participants to events. Instead of assuming that such heads exist as distinct primitives in the functional lexicon, it is proposed that there is one such head, which can get different interpretations depending on how it is merged into the structure. The chapter’s approach attributes the relative uniformity of the expression of argument structure to the principles that interpret syntactic structure semantically; thus, syntax is truly autonomous, with the atoms of syntactic representations carrying no inherent semantic values. Once syntactic heads are absolved from the necessity of explicitly carrying certain features relevant to their interpretation, a sparse inventory of functional heads can be developed. The system is applied to a set of constructions that present distinct challenges to theories that demand a kind of transparent reflection of argument structure in underlying syntactic representations.

This chapter treats the second-generation Hasmonean figure John Hyrcanus to whom the virtues of leadership, priesthood, and prophecy are attributed. This ascription is reflected not only in Josephus and rabbinic literature but also receives a hostile twist in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Based on an earlier stratum from a lost Aramaic chronicle, the legend recounts an announcement of military victory by a heavenly voice in the temple. In essence this tale belongs to a genre identified as priestly temple legends. This priestly legend was in turn integrated into both the Josephan and the rabbinic contexts. The new rabbinic setting in effect “rabbinized” the image of John Hyrcanus and inverted the message of the story, using it to announce the end of the era of prophecy. In contrast, Josephus underscored the merit of prophecy and retained the full image of John as a political and military leader. For both corpora, Hyrcanus represents the acme of the Hasmonean rulership.

AbstractAlthough the notion of academic integrity is advanced as a Western construct, Indigenous ways of conceptualising and mobilizing this construct represent a vast, diverse and enduring knowledge system that encompasses not only how sources of knowledge are attributed, but also serves as one of the ontological pillars that upholds honesty and truth-telling within a relationally oriented epistemology. Written from an Indigenous perspective, this chapter invites readers to critically reflect on the ways that academic integrity, as an ethical pillar of the Western academy, relies on institutionalized protocols that privilege a specific methodology of citation and referencing that elevates the written word whilst excluding Indigenous methodologies that are embedded within an ethic of truth-telling and relational accountability. Grounded in the scholarship that surrounds Indigenous knowledge as a participatory way of knowing and utilizing a values-based analysis, I highlight the conceptual parallels between Western understandings of academic integrity and an Indigenous relational epistemology that is rooted in accountability. In today’s social climate of reconciliation, academic institutions across Canada are seeking avenues to decolonize their pedagogies and practices. One such avenue is in the area of academic integrity which is underlain with distinct and established ways of transmitting knowledge that have all too often left Indigenous knowledge systems to exist as alternative, or less rigorous, approaches to knowledge production. Movement towards a more equitable, critical and comprehensive understanding of how we, as scholars, are being accountable to those voices that inform and shape our own requires the consideration of a trans-systemic approach.

Our research task is to present and analyse features of the local human-nature and human-reindeer relations in the historical timespan of the twentieth century and in the context of cultural nature in the historical Forest Sami area of Finnish Mid-Lapland. By cultural nature we refer to the different meanings and attributes groups and individuals give and have given to their surrounding natural environment with its fauna, flora, and waterways. The question is viewed through environmental changes and the meanings connected to reindeer roundups (corrals) and roundup places as an example of human-nature interaction. The reindeer roundups have historically been important social meeting places for subarctic communities, and the roundup events have traditionally been the highlight of the reindeer year. Our empirical focus lies in two reindeer herding cooperatives (Finn. paliskunta), Sattasniemi and Oraniemi, geographically located in the middle of Finnish Lapland ‒ mainly in Sodankylä, and partly in Savukoski and Pelkosenniemi municipalities ‒ and the reindeer roundup processes in these cooperatives. Our key source data consists of archival material, such as the minutes and reports of the Reindeer Herders Association and Sattasniemi co-operative. We have also utilised regional, local and occupational newspapers and magazines from the 1920s to the 2010s. In order to reach the voices of the contemporary herder communities we conducted a Cultural Nature Survey from 22 February to 30 March 2021. In the course of the twentieth century, Mid-Lapland faced enormous environmental changes. Intensive forestry, energy production and the mining industry have physically altered the landscape and disturbed reindeer herding based on natural pasture rotation. Continuity of livelihood and way of life are worrying issues in the region. The feeling of not being heard or understood also affects communities’ nature and reindeer relationships. The more the surrounding natural and cultural environments have changed, the more the Mid-Lappish communities have tried to revitalise the ‘original’ nature-human-reindeer relationship and the nostalgic stories of dense forests, free waterways and untouched wilderness. The locals emphasise their ‘authentic’ Lappish lifestyle, at least in terms of reindeer herding. This endeavour can be regarded as cultural use of nature. The article was prepared in cooperation between the University of Lapland and the University of Eastern Finland. It is part of the HISTECO project (2019‒2023) funded by the Academy of Finland and led by Sari Stark.

Meeting customer demands in the form of product multiattributes during the Automotive Product Development Process is the key for achieving superior product quality. Using the Voice of the customer expressed in these multi-attributes to develop Vehicle, Subsystems, and Components Technical Specifications is a necessary step during the early phases of the process. Achieving these multi and sometimes conflicting attributes, however, is the main challenge and the real measure of the process success. In this paper, a general approach to multi-attribute balancing in Automotive Product Development Process is presented. The development of vehicle technical specification based on the voice of the customer is addressed. The processes to flow vehicle level attributes to subsystems and components design targets and constraints are outlined. A resolution process for resolving conflicts between these targets during the early design phases is presented. To demonstrate the application of the resolution process and the steps for multi-attribute balancing of automotive components three different automotive examples are discussed.

In the virtual realm, human rights face vulnerability, particularly with intangible rights such as the right to own the voice, which lacks tangible representation in the physical world. The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) intensifies the challenge of protecting virtual rights, as there is currently no established legal or technical defense against violations, especially concerning voice ownership. Our proposed solution employs blockchain technology and smart contracts, forming the Virtual Me system. This innovative system attributes the original voice to its rightful owner, mitigating violations and unauthorized usage. What sets our solution apart is its pioneering role in providing a technical foundation for safeguarding virtual human rights. The system aligns with the requirements of virtual human rights ownership, ensuring comprehensive protection and registration for their original owners.

This paper introduces a method enabling anonymous collaboration in the metaverse. As the Internet is turning to its next revolution in which time and space are incorporated more thoroughly to the everyday communication, visual and aural communication are given more prominent roles. This might lead to more biased interaction since people may possess pre-judgmental attitudes regarding other people’s age, gender, and ethnical attributes, which could impact collaboration. These attributes are rather easy to visually change within the metaverse by simply changing the avatars’ appearance. This research focused on the real-time aural communication in the metaverse, and the risks of harmful profiling based on people’s language use and voice. The research setting was a custom-made metaverse, where two anonymized participants interacted with each other to achieve the goal through collaboration. In the study, their interaction was monitored. Afterwards, they answered to questions in which told about their experiences and tried to de-anonymize the other participant. This preliminary research indicated that via modulating the sound, it was possible to anonymize users to a reasonable range within the custom-made metaverse.

This paper presents a methodology for applying Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to environmentally conscious design in the early stages of product development. The benefit of this approach is the simultaneous consideration of conventional design factors and environmental aspects during conceptual design. QFD’s main mission is to translate customer requirements to product characteristics and design attributes. QFD clarifies what is important for a product to be competitive in the market and identifies engineering specifications and designs that respond to the “voice of customer (VOC).” QFD for the Environment (QFDE) we propose could be applied to environmentally conscious design by including environmental aspects as quality requirements in addition to conventional VOCs. After discussing what kind of requirements and attributes of a product should be considered from the environmental point of view, we came up with a set of environmental quality requirements and engineering specifications, and their correlation factors. Design engineers can find out which parts are the most important parts to enhance environmental consciousness of their products by executing QFDE phase I through phase II. Further, we developed a methodology to evaluate the effects of design improvement concerning the parts on environmental quality requirements as phase III and IV.

Job quality, a well-known topic in workforce development circles, is an underutilized but useful lens with which to examine labor market conditions. The Aspen Institute (2020), a long-time advocate for job quality, defines it as “a range of attributes that drive worker experiences: wages, benefits, scheduling, legal rights, equity and inclusion, opportunity to build skills and advance, supportive work environment, and worker voice.” Given the record number of resignations and available job openings, especially in the lower-paid industry sectors, along with popular labor market narratives around the Great R’s (Resignation, Renegotiation, Reshuffle), I wonder to what extent job quality plays a role in the occupational mobility of workers. Occupational mobility includes all potential outcomes an individual has when holding a job. For instance, in addition to the option of changing to another occupation, an individual can remain in that occupation, become unemployed, or leave the labor force. Occupational mobility metrics are an appealing way to explore labor market conditions because they provide a dynamic perspective, while traditional metrics such as unemployment and labor force participation rates tend to be static observations.

The research was a retrospective study of twenty-five Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) inspection reports (from March 2017 through to December 2018) of a national medicine regulatory agency, drug Inspectorate, in West Africa, designed to assess the inspectors’ expertise in the act of inspection report writing. The investigation examined a paper-based tool of thirteen pre-registration Inspection reports and twelve GMP reassessment reports written prior and following an intervention program by external GMP trainers to enhance inspectors’ skill in pharmaceutical cGMP inspection. The study made use of quantitative analysis to investigate each team’s expertise in the act of writing GMP inspection report. Likewise, each report’s compliance with the requirements of three regulatory standards on GMP inspection report writing was ascertained. Impact of intervention program on lead inspectors’ competence was assessed. Lastly, gap in each team writing effectiveness, and lead inspectors’ abilities to deliver an effective report were determined. The results showed one of the inspection team (4.0%) wrote an excellent report. Two (8.0%) of the twenty-five inspection teams penned good inspection reports. Eleven (44.0%) teams drafted needs improvement reports and the remaining eleven teams (44.0%) prepared unacceptable reports. The excellent report and the two good reports had report format that meet expectation. One (50.0%) of the good reports showed the authors possess excellent knowledge of cGMP technical areas. The remain good report (50.0%) revealed the writers’ knowledge.as good. The excellent report showed the authors displayed partial mastery in the use of objective evidence while the two good reports disclosed theirs as having partial and evolving abilities. One of the teams (50.0%) that wrote good reports displayed good use of third person narrative past tense in report writing whereas the other team used the same tense and voice excellently. Generally, a sort of marginal level of performance was prominent among the inspection teams. A gap, if not tackled, will slow down regulatory process through increase report review, litigations that query report factual accuracy (AIHO, 2017) and delay in issuance of marketing authorization. In conclusion, trainings on quality attributes, such as technical content (Quality Management System (QMS) and Site), the use of objective evidence, assignment of risk levels to GMP violations and citing of applicable laws, regulation and guidelines that substantiate GMP observations, were recommended, to enhance knowledge sharing and regulators’ performance in the act of writing inspection report.
