Abstract Objective. Emphysema is characterized by the destruction and permanent enlargement of the alveoli in the lung. According to visual CT appearance, emphysema can be divided into three subtypes: centrilobular emphysema (CLE), panlobular emphysema (PLE), and paraseptal emphysema (PSE). Automating emphysema classification can help precisely determine the patterns of lung destruction and provide a quantitative evaluation. Approach. We propose a vision transformer (ViT) model to classify the emphysema subtypes via CT images. First, large patches (61 × 61) are cropped from CT images which contain the area of normal lung parenchyma, CLE, PLE, and PSE. After resizing, the large patch is divided into small patches and these small patches are converted to a sequence of patch embeddings by flattening and linear embedding. A class embedding is concatenated to the patch embedding, and the positional embedding is added to the resulting embeddings described above. Then, the obtained embedding is fed into the transformer encoder blocks to generate the final representation. Finally, the learnable class embedding is fed to a softmax layer to classify the emphysema. Main results. To overcome the lack of massive data, the transformer encoder blocks (pre-trained on ImageNet) are transferred and fine-tuned in our ViT model. The average accuracy of the pre-trained ViT model achieves 95.95% in our lab’s own dataset, which is higher than that of AlexNet, Inception-V3, MobileNet-V2, ResNet34, and ResNet50. Meanwhile, the pre-trained ViT model outperforms the ViT model without the pre-training. The accuracy of our pre-trained ViT model is higher than or comparable to that by available methods for the public dataset. Significance. The results demonstrated that the proposed ViT model can accurately classify the subtypes of emphysema using CT images. The ViT model can help make an effective computer-aided diagnosis of emphysema, and the ViT method can be extended to other medical applications.

Using a mitochondria-targeted vitamin E (Mito-Vit-E) in a rat pneumonia-related sepsis model, we examined the role of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species in sepsis-mediated myocardial inflammation and subsequent cardiac contractile dysfunction. Sepsis was produced in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats via intratracheal injection of S. pneumonia (4 × 106colony formation units per rat). A single dose of Mito-Vit-E, vitamin E, or control vehicle, at 21.5 μmol/kg, was administered 30 min postinoculation. Blood was collected, and heart tissue was harvested at various time points. Mito-Vit-E in vivo distribution was confirmed by mass spectrometry. In cardiac mitochondria, Mito-Vit-E improved total antioxidant capacity and suppressed H2O2generation, whereas vitamin E offered little effect. In cytosol, both antioxidants decreased H2O2levels, but only vitamin E strengthened antioxidant capacity. Mito-Vit-E protected mitochondrial structure and function in the heart during sepsis, demonstrated by reduction in lipid and protein oxidation, preservation of mitochondrial membrane integrity, and recovery of respiratory function. While both Mito-Vit-E and vitamin E suppressed sepsis-induced peripheral and myocardial production of proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6), Mito-Vit-E exhibited significantly higher efficacy ( P < 0.05). Stronger anti-inflammatory action of Mito-Vit-E was further shown by its near-complete inhibition of sepsis-induced myeloperoxidase accumulation in myocardium, suggesting its effect on neutrophil infiltration. Echocardiography analysis indicated that Mito-Vit-E ameliorated cardiac contractility of sepsis animals, shown by improved fractional shortening and ejection fraction. Together, our data suggest that targeted scavenging of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species protects mitochondrial function, attenuates tissue-level inflammation, and improves whole organ activities in the heart during sepsis.

Dementia is a degenerative disease that is increasingly prevalent in an aging society. Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common type of dementia, is best mitigated via early detection and management. Deep learning is an artificial intelligence technique that has been used to diagnose and predict diseases by extracting meaningful features from medical images. The convolutional neural network (CNN) is a representative application of deep learning, serving as a powerful tool for the diagnosis of AD. Recently, vision transformers (ViT) have yielded classification performance exceeding that of CNN in some diagnostic image classifications. Because the brain is a very complex network with interrelated regions, ViT, which captures direct relationships between images, may be more effective for brain image analysis than CNN. Therefore, we propose a method for classifying dementia images by applying 18F-Florbetaben positron emission tomography (PET) images to ViT. Data were evaluated via binary (normal control and abnormal) and ternary (healthy control, mild cognitive impairment, and AD) classification. In a performance comparison with the CNN, VGG19 was selected as the comparison model. Consequently, ViT yielded more effective performance than VGG19 in binary classification. However, in ternary classification, the performance of ViT cannot be considered excellent. These results show that it is hard to argue that the ViT model is better at AD classification than the CNN model.

Aiming at the problem that traditional CNN network is not good at extracting global features of images, Based on DXVNet network, Conditional Random Fields (CRF) component and pre-trained ViT-Huge (Vision Transformer) are adopted in this paper Transformer model expands and builds a brand new DXVNet-ViT-Huge (JFT) network. CRF component can help the network learn the constraint conditions of each word corresponding prediction label, improve the D-GRU method based word label prediction errors, and improve the accuracy of sequence annotation. The Transformer architecture of the ViT (Huge) model can extract the global feature information of the image, while CNN is better at extracting the local features of the image. Therefore, the ViT (Huge) Huge pre-training model and CNN pre-training model adopt the multi-modal feature fusion technology. Two complementary image feature information is fused by Bi-GRU to improve the performance of network classification. The experimental results show that the newly constructed Dxvnet-Vit-Huge (JFT) model achieves good performance, and the F1 values in the two real public data sets are 6.03% and 7.11% higher than the original DXVNet model, respectively.

Deficiency in vitamin D (Vit D) has been widely associated with several musculoskeletal diseases. However, the effects of the exogenous Vit D supplementation are still unclear in the prevention of the latter, especially in the cartilage developmental period. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of Vit D supplementation and restriction on the articular cartilage development in healthy young sedentary rats. To this aim, twelve nine-week-old healthy Sprague–Dawley male rats were subjected to Vit D-based experimental diets: R, with a content in Vit D of 1400 IU/kg; R-DS, with a Vit D supplementation (4000 IU/kg); R-DR, with a Vit D restriction (0 IU/kg) for 10 weeks. The morphology, thickness and expression of cartilage-associated molecules such as collagen type II/X, lubricin and Vit D receptor (VDR), were assessed. Histological, histomorphometric and immunohistochemical evaluations were made on rat tibial cartilage samples. In the present experimental model, restriction of Vit D intake induced: The lower thickness of cartilage compared both to R (p = < 0.0001) and R-DS (p = < 0.0001); reduction of proteoglycans in the extracellular matrix (ECM) compared both to R (p = 0.0359) and R-DS (p = < 0.0001); decreased collagen II (Col II) with respect both to R (p = 0.0076) and R-DS (p = 0.0016); increased collagen X (Col X) immunoexpression when compared both to R (p = < 0.0001) and R-DS (p = < 0.0001), confirming data from the literature. Instead, supplementation of Vit D intake induced: Higher cartilage thickness with respect both to R (p = 0.0071) and R-DR (p = < 0.0001); increase of ECM proteoglycan deposition compared both to R (p = 0.0175) and R-DR (p = < 0.0001); higher immunoexpression of lubricin with respect both to R (p = 0.001) and R-DR (p = 0.0008). These results suggest that Vit D supplementation with diet, already after 10 weeks, has a favorable impact on the articular cartilage thickness development, joint lubrication and ECM fibers deposition in a young healthy rat model.

Vitamin C (Vit C) is anutrient present in many foods, particularly citrus fruits, green vegetables, tomatoes, and potatoes. Vit C is studied for its applications in the prevention and management of different pathologies, including neurodegenerative diseases. Neuroinflammation is a defense mechanism activated by a stimulus or an insult that is aimed at the preservation of the brain by promoting tissue repair and removing cellular debris; however, persistent inflammatory responses are detrimental and may lead to the pathogenesis and progression of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Alzheimer’s disease. PD is one of the most common chronic progressive neurodegenerative disorders, and oxidative stress is one of the most important factors involved in its pathogenesis and progression.Due to this, research on antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds is an important target for counteracting neurodegenerative diseases, including PD. In the central nervous system, the presence of Vit C in the brain is higher than in other body districts, but why and how this occurs is still unknown. In this research, Vit C, with its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties, is studied to better understand its contribution to brain protection; in particular, we have investigated the neuroprotective effects of Vit C in the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced animal model of PD and its role in the modulation of neuroinflammation. First, we observed that Vit C significantly decreased the MPTP-induced loss of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive dopaminergic neuronal cells in the substantia nigra, as well as microglial cell activation and astrogliosis. Furthermore, gait and spontaneous locomotor activity, evaluated by an automated treadmill and the Open Field test, respectively, were partially ameliorated by Vit C treatment in MPTP-intoxicated animals. In relation to neuroinflammation, results show that Vit C reduced the protein and mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, TLR4, TNF-α, iNOS, and CD40, while anti-inflammatory proteins such as IL-10, CD163, TGF-β, and IL-4 increased. Interestingly, we show for the first time that Vit C reduces neuroinflammation by modulating microglial polarization and astrocyte activation. Moreover, Vit C was able to reduce NLRP3 activation, which is linked to the pathogenesis of many inflammatory diseases, including neuroinflammatory disorders. In conclusion, our study provides evidence that Vit C may represent a new promising dietary supplement for the prevention and alleviation of the inflammatory cascade of PD, thus contributing to neuroprotection.

Vitamin D plays an essential role in prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Thyroid hormones, in addition to vitamin D, significantly contribute to regulation of bone remodeling cycle and health. There is currently no data about a possible connection between vitamin D treatment and the thyroid in the context of osteoporosis. Middle-aged Wistar rats were divided into: sham operated (SO), orchidectomized (Orx), and cholecalciferol-treated orchidectomized (Orx + Vit. D3; 5 µg/kg b.m./day during three weeks) groups (n = 6/group). Concentration of 25(OH)D in serum of the Orx + Vit. D3 group increased 4 and 3.2 times (p < 0.0001) respectively, compared to Orx and SO group. T4, TSH, and calcitonin in serum remained unaltered. Vit. D3 treatment induced changes in thyroid functional morphology that indicate increased utilization of stored colloid and release of thyroid hormones in comparison with hormone synthesis, to maintain hormonal balance. Increased expression of nuclear VDR (p < 0.05) points to direct, TSH independent action of Vit. D on thyrocytes. Strong CYP24A1 immunostaining in C cells suggests its prominent expression in response to Vit. D in this cell subpopulation in orchidectomized rat model of osteoporosis. The indirect effect of Vit. D on bone, through fine regulation of thyroid function, is small.

In recent years, the transformer model has been widely used in computer-vision tasks and has achieved impressive results. Unfortunately, these transformer-based models have the common drawback of having many parameters and a large memory footprint, causing them to be difficult to deploy on mobiles as lightweight convolutional neural networks. To address these issues, a Vision Transformer (ViT) model, named the lightweight Vision Transformer (LW-ViT) model, is proposed to reduce the complexity of the transformer-based model. The model is applied to offline handwritten Chinese character recognition. The design of the LW-ViT model is inspired by MobileViT. The lightweight ViT model reduces the number of parameters and FLOPs by reducing the number of transformer blocks and the MV2 layer based on the overall framework of the MobileViT model. The number of parameters and FLOPs for the LW-ViT model was 0.48 million and 0.22 G, respectively, and it ultimately achieved a high recognition accuracy of 95.8% on the dataset. Furthermore, compared to the MobileViT model, the number of parameters was reduced by 53.8%, and the FLOPs were reduced by 18.5%. The experimental results show that the LW-ViT model has a low number of parameters, proving the correctness and feasibility of the proposed model.

The ViTs model has been widely used since it was proposed, and its performance on large-scale datasets has surpassed that of CNN models. In order to deploy the ViTs model safely in practical application scenarios, its robustness needs to be investigated. There are few studies on the robustness of ViT model, therefore, this study investigates the robustness of the ViT model in the face of adversarial example attacks, and proposes the ASK-ViT model with improving robustness by introducing the SK module. The SK module consists of three steps, Split, Fuse and Select, which adaptively select the size of the perceptual field according to the input of multi-scale information, and extracts the features that help the model to classify examples. In addition, adversarial training is used in the training process. Experimental results show that the accuracy of the proposed defense method against C&W, DI2FGSM, MDI2FGSM, ImageNet-A, and ImageNet-R attacks is 30.104%, 29.146%, 28.885%, 29.573%, and 48.867%, respectively. Compared with other methods, the method in this study shows stronger robustness.

Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is a common cause of low back pain in diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM) patients. Its pathogenesis and the vitamin (vit.) K2 influence on this disease remain unclear. Lumbar motion segments of male Zucker Diabetes Fatty (ZDF) rats (non-diabetic [control] and diabetic; fed without or with vit. K2) were used. Femur lengths and vertebral epiphyseal cross-section areas were measured. IVDs were histopathologically examined. Protein synthesis and gene expression of isolated IVD fibrochondrocytes were analyzed. T2DM rats showed histopathological IVD degeneration. Femur lengths and epiphyseal areas were smaller in T2DM rats regardless of vit. K2 feeding. Fibrochondrocytes synthesized interleukin (IL)-24 and IL-10 with no major differences between groups. Alpha smooth muscle actin (αSMA) was strongly expressed, especially in cells of vit. K2-treated animals. Gene expression of aggrecan was low, and that of collagen type 2 was high in IVD cells of diabetic animals, whether treated with vit. K2 or not. Suppressor of cytokine signaling (Socs)3 and heme oxygenase (Hmox)1 gene expression was highest in the cells of diabetic animals treated with vit. K2. Vit. K2 influenced the expression of some stress-associated markers in IVD cells of diabetic rats, but not that of IL-10 and IL-24.

La mode est un regard qui se produit à partir de l'expérience de certains processus historiques : le développement de la métropole et des médias du XIXéme siècle. La naissance de ce regard est donc liée au pouvoir social acquis par la métropole et par les différents médias, qui, dans l'ensemble, constituent un groupe homogène d'images historiques parce qu'ils sont unis par une accélération du temps. L'accélération du temps ôte aux choses leur linéarité et leur durée. L'attention se déplace continuellement sur leur naissance et sur leur mort. Une continuelle construction et destruction de choses est exhibée et vécue. La splendeur et la caducité constituent, en même temps, le mécanisme et le but de la vie ; par contrecoup, cette dernière devient une succession d'instants vécus ou morts. Immersion, sortie et retour posthume constituent le processus à la fois experiencielle et mnémonique qui caractérise le rapport avec les choses. Les différentes choses du monde devront être alors perçues comme des illusions ou des accoutumances qui absorbent et occupent le temps du moi, mais seulement pour une période donnée. La vie s'accomplit non pas en tant qu'expérience vitale mais comme expérience de mort. Fashion and lifestyle are a gaze produced by the experience of determined historical processes : development of metropolis and media in 19th century. The birth of this gaze is connected to the social power accumulated by metropolitain cities and various medias. Their homogeneous structure of historical images is determined by the phenomenon of time acceleration that removes the linearity and duration of the things. Attention is instead focused on their birth and death. Things are under a continuous construction and destruction, experienced and exhibited. Splendour and nullity constitute, at the same time, the mechanism and the goal of life which by-effect becomes a simple succession of instants, dead or alive. Immersion, exit and posthumous return constitute the alltogether existential and mnemonic process caracterizing our ralation to things. Therefore, different things can only be perceived as short time illusions and habituations. Life achieves itself not as vital experience but as experience of death. It is precisely in this means that lifestyle, defined as ludic mechanism of creation and destruction of habituations, becomes the key-image for the experience and the gaze directed on itself

Neste trabalho fica evidente que existe uma relaÃÃo nÃo linear entre a taxa de formaÃÃo bruta de capital fixo e a taxa de crescimento econÃmico na economia brasileira e, devido a essa nÃo linearidade, o teste de prediÃÃes do modelo AK e neoclÃssico proposto por Jones (1995) passa a ser inconclusivo, pois existe espaÃo para as prediÃÃes de ambos os modelos. Nosso modelo economÃtrico indica que, teoricamente, a produtividade marginal do capital se modifica de acordo com uma taxa de crescimento indicada pelo parÃmetro threshold. Essa modificaÃÃo pode aparentemente ser explicada devido à modificaÃÃo do coeficiente de elasticidade de substituiÃÃo entre capital e trabalho, ficando aqui uma proposta de novas investigaÃÃes. Ao tratarmos de polÃticas pÃblicas, constata-se que, por mais que se amplie a taxa de formaÃÃo bruta de capital fixo chegaremos, no mÃximo, ao âcatch-upâ do crescimento do PIB das economias de renda mÃdia baixa e do crescimento econÃmico dos paÃses do leste asiÃtico e do PacÃfico. O trabalho tambÃm sugere que o montante de recursos necessÃrio para se concluir tais âcatch-upsâ à da ordem de R$ 786 bilhÃes.
In this work it is evident that a not linear relation exists enters the tax of rude formation of capital fixture and the tax of economic growth in Brazilian economy e, which had to this non linearity, the test of predictions of model AK and neoclÃssico considered for Jones (1995) starts to be inconclusivo, therefore exists space for the predictions of both the models. Our econometrical model indicates that, theoretically, the productivity delinquent of the capital if modifies a tax of growth in accordance with indicated for the parameter threshold. This modification can pparently be explained due to modification of the coefficient of elasticity of substitution between capital and work, being here a proposal of new inquiries. When dealing with public politics, one evidences that, no matter how hard if extends the tax of rude formation of capital fixture will arrive, in the maximum, to âcatch-upâ of the growth of the GIP of the economies of average income decrease and of the economic growth of the countries of the Asian east and the Pacific. The work also suggests that the sum of resources necessary to conclude such âcatch-upsâ is of the order of R$ 786 billion.

Standard linear modeling approaches make potentially simplistic assumptions regarding the structure of categorical effects that may obfuscate more complex relationships governing data. For example, recent work focused on the two-way unreplicated layout has shown that hidden groupings among the levels of one categorical predictor frequently interact with the ungrouped factor. We extend the notion of a "latent grouping factor'' to linear models in general. The proposed work allows researchers to determine whether an apparent grouping of the levels of a categorical predictor reveals a plausible hidden structure given the observed data. Specifically, we offer Bayesian model selection-based approaches to reveal latent group-based heteroscedasticity, regression effects, and/or interactions. Failure to account for such structures can produce misleading conclusions. Since the presence of latent group structures is frequently unknown a priori to the researcher, we use fractional Bayes factor methods and mixture g-priors to overcome lack of prior information. We provide an R package, slgf, that implements our methodology in practice, and demonstrate its usage in practice.

Statistical models are a powerful tool for describing a broad range of phenomena in our world. However, many common statistical models may make assumptions that are overly simplistic and fail to account for key trends and patterns in data. Specifically, we search for hidden structures formed by partitioning a dataset into two groups. These two groups may have distinct variability, statistical effects, or other hidden effects that are missed by conventional approaches. We illustrate the ability of our method to detect these patterns through a variety of disciplines and data layouts, and provide software for researchers to implement this approach in practice.

It will be presented the principles behind the use of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory as a consistent method to parametrize New Physics. The concepts of Matching and Power Counting are covered and a Covariant Derivative Expansion introduced to the construction of the operators set coming from the particular integrated UV model. The technique is applied in examples including the SM with a new Scalar Triplet and for different sectors of the 3-3-1 model in the presence of Heavy Leptons. Finally, the Wilson coefficient for a dimension-6 operator generated from the integration of a heavy J-quark is then compared with the measurements of the oblique Y parameter.

Användning av olika BIM-verktyg blir allt mer frekvent inom byggsektorn. Informationsutbyte av 3D-modeller mellan projektets olika aktörer sker kontinuerligt under projekteringsskedet. Eftersom olika aktörer använder sig av olika programvaror behövs det ett öppet filformat för leverans av 3D-modeller. IFC är ett neutralt filformat som möjliggör informationsutbyte mellan olika discipliner och samordning av BIM-modeller. Detta examenarbete är en förundersökning av kvalitativ och kvantitativ sort, med syftet att ta fram en intern arbetsmetod för kvalitetssäkring av IFC-modeller vid leverans. I de kvalitativamomenten ingår intervjuer. Intervjuer görs för att få en förståelse om vad de anställda på WSP Byggprojektering Göteborg har för uppfattning om olika program och hantering av IFC. Det har gett författarna en djupare inblick och förståelse av fördelar och utmaningar som svarande stöterpå, som lyfts under avsnittet resultat. Ett praktiskt delmoment ingår i examensarbetet. Under depraktiska momenten kommer det modellera i Tekla Structures och Revit för att sedan analyseramodellerna med hjälp av granskningsprogrammen Solibri Model Checker och Navisworks Manage. Två granskningsmetoder skapas i den här avhandlingen, en visuell granskning och en Excelrapport. Den visuella granskningsmetoden innebär att visuellt granska IFC-modellen i samma granskningsprogram som samordnaren. Den andra metoden är en prototyp som jämför olika rapporter från respektive programvaror. Slutsatsen i den här rapporten är enligt följande punkter: • Mänskliga faktorn vid modellering och användning av korrekta verktyg vid export till IFC. • IFC-formatet och de olika programmens förmåga att tolka IFC-informationen kan i vissa fall brista för icke standardiserade geometrier. • Granskningsprogram kan tolka IFC-modellen olika.
The use of different BIM tools is becoming increasingly frequent in the construction sector. Information exchange of 3D models between the various actors of the project takes place continuously during the design phase. Because different actors use different software, an openfile format is needed for the delivery of 3D models. IFC is a neutral file format that enables information exchange between different disciplines and coordination of BIM models. This exam work is a preliminary study of qualitative and quantitative variety, with the aim of developing an internal working method for quality assurance of IFC model delivery. The qualitative parts include interviews. Interviews are made to gain an understanding of what the employees at WSP Byggprojektering Göteborg have in mind about different programs and management of IFC. It has given the authors a deeper insight and understanding of the benefits and challenges that respondents encounter, which are highlighted in the section results. Apractical part is included in the degree project. During the practical steps, it will model in Tekla Structures and Revit to then analyze the models with the help of the review programs Solibri Model Checker and Navisworks Manage. Two review methods are created in this thesis, a visual review and an Excel report. The visual inspection method involves visually reviewing the IFC model in the same review program as the coordinator. The second method is a prototype that compares different reports from the respective software.The conclusion in this report is as follows: • Human factor in the modeling and use of correct tools when exporting to IFC. • The IFC format and the ability of the various programs to interpret the IFCinformation may in some cases fail for non-standard geometries. • Review programs can interpret the IFC model differently.

Estudamos um sistema de partículas a tempo discreto cuja dinâmica é a seguinte. Considere que no instante inicial sobre cada inteiro não negativo há uma partícula, inicialmente inativa. A partícula da origem é ativada e instantaneamente ativa um conjunto aleatório contíguo de partículas que estão a sua direita. Como regra, no instante seguinte ao que foi ativada, cada partícula ativa realiza esta mesma dinâmica de modo independente de todo o resto. Dizemos que o processo sobrevive se em qualquer momento sempre há ao menos uma partícula ativa. Chamamos este processo de Firework, associando a dinâmica de ativação de uma partícula inativa a uma infecção ou explosão. Nosso interesse é estabelecer se o processo tem probabilidade positiva de sobrevivência e apresentar limites para esta probabilidade. Isto deve ser feito em função da distribuição da variável aleatória que define o raio de ação de uma partícula. Associando o processo de ativação a uma infecção, podemos pensar este modelo como um modelo epidêmico. Consideramos também algumas variações dessa dinâmica. Dentre elas, variantes com partículas distribuídas sobre a semirreta dos reais positivos (nesta vertente, existem condições para as distâncias entre partículas consecutivas) e também com as partículas distribuídas sobre vértices de árvores. Estudamos também para esses casos a transição de fase e probabilidade de sobrevivência. Nesta variante os resultados obtidos são funções da sequência de distribuições dos alcances das explosões e da estrutura dos lugares onde se localizam as partículas. Consideramos também variações do modelo onde cada partícula ao ser ativada, permanece ativa durante um tempo aleatório e nesse período emite explosões que ocorrem em instantes aleatórios.
We studied a discrete time particle system whose dynamic is as follows. Consider that at time zero, on each non-negative integer, there is a particle, initially inactive. A particle which is placed at origin is activated and instantly activates a contiguous random set of particles that is on its right. As a rule, the next moment to what it has been activated, each active particle carries the same behavior independently of the rest. We say that the process survives if the amount of particles activated along the process is infinite. We call this the Firework process, associating the activation dynamic of a particle to an infection or explosion process. Our interest is to establish whether the process has positive probability of survival and to present limits to this probability. This is done according to the distribution random variable that defines the radius of infection of each active particle, Associating the activation process to an infection, we think this model as a model epidemic. We also consider some variations of this dynamic. Among them, variants with particles distributed over the half line (there are conditions for the distances between consecutive particles) and also with particles distributed over the vertices of a tree. We studied phase transitions and the correspondent survival probability. In this variant the results depend on the sequence of probability distributions for the range of the explosions and on the particles displacement. We also consider a variation where each particle after activated, remains active during a random time period emitting explosions that occur in random moments.

Den nationella planen för vattenverksamheter antogs år 2020 och innebär att vattenverksamheter ska förses med moderna miljövillkor för att öka vattenmiljönytta och att bibehålla den effektiva tillgången till vattenkraftsel. Emån som är ett Natura 2000-område är det största vattendraget i sydöstra Sverige och vattendraget är utifrån konnektiviteten klassificerat som måttlig. Högsby vattenkraftverk, som ligger i Emån och ägs av Uniper, ska omprövas utifrån miljövillkor enligt den nationella planen och idag har Högsby vattenkraftverk ingen fastställd minimitappning för sin anläggning. Målet med studien är att undersöka storleken på vattenflödet av minimitappningen som kan användas i den ursprungliga naturfåran i Högsby för att möjliggöra longitudinella spridningsmöjligheter i uppströms och nedströms riktning för de fiskarter som historiskt sett har kunnat vandra genom Högsby. En sektion i naturfåran är uppdämd av en tröskeldamm som bedöms vara den svåraste passagen i naturfåran med undantag från utskovsdammen. Metoden som används i rapporten är en endimensionell stationär modellering i HEC-RAS över den naturfåra som kan möjliggöra fiskvandring förbi vattenkraftverk. Två modeller har skapats – med och utan tröskeldamm. Utifrån resultatet är den högsta medelvattenhastigheten i sektionen nedanför tröskeldammen i båda scenarion, detsamma gäller medelvattendjupet.  De konnektivitetshöjande åtgärder som diskuteras är minimitappning och olika fiskvägar i naturfåran för att behålla den historiska forsmiljön som funnits. Både rivning av tröskeldamm och fiskväg runt dammen har diskuterats. Därutöver anses havsöring och lax vara fiskarter som med stor säkerhet har kunnat passera Högsby historiskt sett. Högsby är klass 1 i relativt reglerbidrag, vilket bör tas i beaktning vid bedömning av minimitappning. Det finns osäkerheter med modellen, såsom batymetri och randvillkor samt validering av modellen. Därför går det inte med säkerhet att säga att vattendjup eller vattenhastigheter stämmer överens med verkligheten. Slutsatsen är att det inte heller med säkerhet går att säga vilka fiskarter som historiskt sett har vandrat genom Högsby, inte heller en minimitappning kan fastställas som kan möjliggöra fiskvandring för alla fiskarter. Däremot kommer implementeringen av en fastställd minimitappning och fiskvägar öka konnektiviteten.
In 2020 the national plan for hydropower plants was implemented in Sweden. The national plan aims to increase the environmental standards for hydropower plants for the benefit of the water body and still maintain an efficient access to electricity originated from hydropower. Emån is the largest river in the south-eastern part of Sweden. The river a Natura 2000 area and it is classified as moderate based on connectivity according to environmental norm for rivers and water bodies. Högsby hydropower plant located along Emån is owned by Uniper and are included within the national plan, which indicate that it needs to meet the environmental standard. Högsby hydropower plant currently has no established minimum discharge. The aim of the study is to investigate a minimum discharge for the natural dry stream located in Högsby to enable higher connectivity for the fish species that have historically been able to migrate through Högsby.  The natural stream is downstream the spillway dam in Högsby. Within the stream a weir is considered to be the most difficult passage for fish migration, with the exception of the spillway dam. The method used in the report is a one-dimensional steady flow model in HEC-RAS for the natural stream to investigate the possibility for fish migration past the hydropower plant. Two scenarios have been considered – with and without the crest dam present. Based on the result from the model, the highest mean water velocity is the section below the weir for both scenarios and same applies to the mean water depth. Implementation of a minimum discharge and various fish ways in the natural stream is measures for increasing connectivity that are being discussed which would also maintain the rapids that has existed in the stream. The fish ways that have been discussed is based on the scenarios if the weir is present or not. The fish species that with great certainty have been able to migrate through Högsby historically is sea trout and salmon. Högsby hydropower plant have the highest classified regulation of the hydropower plants in Emån which need to be considered when determining minimum discharge.  There are a few uncertainties with the hydraulic model such as bathymetry and the boundary conditions. The model is not validated which means that the water depth and the velocity might not reflect the true values. It is not certain which fish species that have migrated through Högsby historically, nor can an established minimum discharge be said to enable fish migration. However, an implementation of a minimum discharge and the fish ways that have been discussed will increase the connectivity in Högsby.

The food service management industry is aware of the importance of an effective experiential learning programme. The technikons try to meet the demands of the food service management industry through involvement of mentors and students. This study undertakes to examine/investigate the deficiencies and problems concerning the experiential learning components of the food service management course, as it is evident that this forms an integral part of the food service management diploma. Although the food service managers is aware of the experiential learning programme, no formal information such as: an employers'/mentors' manual; orientation of other procedures of the technikons or industry; comprehensive evaluating procedures; coordinators' visits and debriefing procedures, is explained or sent to the industry or student. The researcher's involvement with experiential learning and specifically the administration of the experiential learning programme, led to the hypothesis that there is a need for a formal structured experiential learning programme to clear up the confusion and uncertainty regarding the involvement of the student and employer/mentor. As starting point a situation analysis was done to compare the South African perspectives of experiential learning. This information was gathered to place the food service management experiential learning programme in perspective for technikons, students and the food service management industry. The second section deals with a comparative study of the international procedure of experiential learning as currently done in the United States of America (USA), the United Kingdom (UK) and South Africa (SA). What follows next is a comparative study, testing the literature against the reality, as it is experienced in tertiary institutions in the USA, UK and SA. Details of this are expounded in chapter 40f this study. Findings are reported and recommendations regarding the application of an . efficient, productive, structured experiential leaming programme for the course: Food Service Management, are noted in chapter 5. In the last section an explanation is given of the following proposed manuals: • Tutorial Manual • Student Manual • Employer/Mentor Manual • Coordinator Manual during student visits • Debriefing Manual These proposed manuals should be used to satisfy the needs of all involved: employers, technikons and students.

Despite the popularity of Vision Transformers (ViTs) and eXplainable AI (XAI), only a few explanation methods have been designed specially for ViTs thus far. They mostly use attention weights of the [CLS] token on patch embeddings and often produce unsatisfactory saliency maps. This paper proposes a novel method for explaining ViTs called ViT-CX. It is based on patch embeddings, rather than attentions paid to them, and their causal impacts on the model output. Other characteristics of ViTs such as causal overdetermination are considered in the design of ViT-CX. The empirical results show that ViT-CX produces more meaningful saliency maps and does a better job revealing all important evidence for the predictions than previous methods. The explanation generated by ViT-CX also shows significantly better faithfulness to the model. The codes and appendix are available at https://github.com/vaynexie/CausalX-ViT.

Fine-grained classification is a challenging task that involves identifying subtle differences between objects within the same category. This task is particularly challenging in scenarios where data is scarce. Visual transformers (ViT) have recently emerged as a powerful tool for image classification, due to their ability to learn highly expressive representations of visual data using self-attention mechanisms. In this work, we explore Semi-ViT, a ViT model fine tuned using semi-supervised learning techniques, suitable for situations where we have lack of annotated data. This is particularly common in e-commerce, where images are readily available but labels are noisy, nonexistent, or expensive to obtain. Our results demonstrate that Semi-ViT outperforms traditional convolutional neural networks (CNN) and ViTs, even when fine-tuned with limited annotated data. These findings indicate that Semi-ViTs hold significant promise for applications that require precise and fine-grained classification of visual data.

The existing multi-modal face anti-spoofing (FAS) frameworks are designed based on two strategies: halfway and late fusion. However, the former requires test modalities consistent with the training input, which seriously limits its deployment scenarios. And the latter is built on multiple branches to process different modalities independently, which limits their use in applications with low memory or fast execution requirements. In this work, we present a single branch based Transformer framework, namely Modality-Agnostic Vision Transformer (MA-ViT), which aims to improve the performance of arbitrary modal attacks with the help of multi-modal data. Specifically, MA-ViT adopts the early fusion to aggregate all the available training modalities’ data and enables flexible testing of any given modal samples. Further, we develop the Modality-Agnostic Transformer Block (MATB) in MA-ViT, which consists of two stacked attentions named Modal-Disentangle Attention (MDA) and Cross-Modal Attention (CMA), to eliminate modality-related information for each modal sequences and supplement modality-agnostic liveness features from another modal sequences, respectively. Experiments demonstrate that the single model trained based on MA-ViT can not only flexibly evaluate different modal samples, but also outperforms existing single-modal frameworks by a large margin, and approaches the multi-modal frameworks introduced with smaller FLOPs and model parameters.

Economists recognize that results from simulation models are dependent, sometimes highly dependent, on values employed for critical exogenous variables. To account for this, analysts sometimes conduct sensitivity analysis with respect to key exogenous variables. This paper presents a practical approach for conducting systematic sensitivity analysis, called Gaussian quadrature. The approach views key exogenous variables as random variables with associated distributions. It produces estimates of means and standard deviations of model results while requiring a limited number of solves of the model. Under mild conditions, all of which hold with respect to the GTAP model, there is strong reason to believe that the estimates of means and standard deviations will be quite accurate.

Interest in regional economic issues coupled with advances in administrative data is driving the creation of new regional economic data. Many of these data series could be useful for nowcasting regional economic activity, but they suffer from a short (albeit constantly expanding) time series which makes incorporating them into nowcasting models problematic. Regional nowcasting is already challenging because the release delay on regional data tends to be greater than that at the national level, and "short" data imply a "ragged edge" at both the beginning and the end of regional data sets, which adds a further complication. In this paper, via an application to the UK, we develop methods to include a wide range of short data into a regional mixed-frequency VAR model. These short data include hitherto unexploited regional VAT turnover data. We address the problem of the ragged edge at both the beginning and end of our sample by estimating regional factors using different missing data algorithms that we then incorporate into our mixed-frequency VAR model. We find that nowcasts of regional output growth are generally improved when we condition them on the factors, but only when the regional nowcasts are produced before the national (UK-wide) output growth data are published.
