This review focusses on the use of recycled and virgin polymers in mineral and metallurgical processing, both high and ambient temperature processes, including novel applications. End of life applications of polymers as well as the utilisation of polymers during its life time in various applications are explored. The discussion includes applications in cleaner coal production, iron and steel production, iron ore palletisation, iron alloy manufacturing, manganese processing, E-wastes processing and carbon sequestration. The underlying principles of these applications are also explained. Advantages and disadvantages of using these polymers in terms of energy and emission reductions, reduction in non-renewables and dematerialisation are discussed. Influence of the polymers on controlling the evolution of micro and nanostructures in alloys and advanced materials is also considered.

Doubtless the hero’s journey was invented long before the Middle Ages. But, at least since The Odyssey, the theme was certainly popular, “back in the day.” Like some modern-day super hero, Appolin (Apollonius) encounters, during his own odyssey, an endless array of life-bending adventures. The list seems endless: an incest episode, a shipwreck, an encounter with a dragon as well a virgin in a brothel, and so forth, all occurring within some thirty chapter-like narrative sequences of about sixty lines each.

Анотація:

The article polemically comprehends the practice of considering the manor topos as a genre-defining feature of Turgenev's novel, since this strategy ignores the plot logic, the content of the main characters, the essence of their relationships and the final meanings of the works. In addition, this approach inevitably destroys the aesthetic unity of Turgenev's work, because “Smoke” and “Virgin Soil” do not fit into the “manor” genre paradigm, even at the level of formal criteria. In this article, based on the material of Turgenev's novels - mainly those in which there is a “Turgenev’s girl” (“Rudin”, “A Nest of Gentlefolk”, “On the Eve”, “Virgin Soil”), - it is shown that the vector of the heroine's fate is directed from the manor world to the big world of search and struggle. The thirst for active good lies at the heart of the choice of the heroine: her chosen one, in contrast to the usual environment, is a spokesman of the spirit of the time, a hero of time, which opens up new horizons of life for her. The plot logic of Turgenev's novel is due not to the chamber circumstances of the life of a noble estate, but to the pathos of the ideas proclaimed by the hero and the thirst for self-realization of the characters in a socially significant field. This determines the genre specificity of Turgenev's novel as an ideological novel.

Andromeda and Medusa are two types within the same motif—that of the motif of “the woman and the dragon”. This article positions a mythical hero between these two women and contrasts their relationship with dragons, along with a further fresh investigation of women and dragons in ritual and cultural context. The complexity of this motif, in contrast to the dragon-slayer topos, is explored, shedding light on social views, desires, and fears toward women in the ancient Greco-Roman cultural context. These female figures are contrasted within one mythical sequence, elucidating their educational role for men. This investigation also confronts the “good” versus the “defiled” woman and clarifies why a “holy-defiled” woman, such as Medusa, cannot exist in patriarchal cultures, and therefore must be isolated, killed, or otherwise controlled by patriarchal society. AbstractEuthymos was a real person, an Olympic victor from Locri Epizephyrii in the first half of the fifth century BC. Various sources attribute to him extraordinary achievements: he received cult in his own lifetime; he fought with and overcame the ‘Hero of Temesa’, a daimon who in ritual deflowered a virgin in the Italian city of Temesa every year; and he vanished into a local river instead of dying (extant iconography from Locri shows him as a river god receiving cult a century after his death). By taking an integrative approach to Euthymos' legend and cult iconography, this article proposes a new interpretation of the complex. It is argued that Euthymos received cult already in his lifetime in consequence of his victory over the Hero and that he took over, in a modified form, the Hero's cult. Various considerations, including the role of river gods as the recipients of brides' virginity in prenuptial rites, point to an identification of the Hero as a river deity. In this light it is suggested that the contest between Euthymos and the Hero was conceived as a deliberate emulation of Herakles' fight with Acheloos. The case of Euthymos at Locri, for all its peculiarities, draws our attention to some important aspects of the heroization of historical persons in the Classical period. First, the earliest attested cult of a living person in Greece is to be placed around the middle of the fifth century. Second, heroized persons in the Classical period were not always passive in the process of their heroization, but could actively promote it. And third, a common pattern in the heroization of contemporaries in the Classical period was to accommodate them into existing cults.

This article analyzes in detail the stories of Zhumeken Nazhimedenov "Azamat auyly" and"Ayelder". The author analyzes the stories from the point of view of the author's concept, from the point of view of the artistic structure. The article analyzes the image of a" woman " created by artistic means. The article also examines the manifestations of elements of modernism in the modern literary process. The article contains links to the 6th volume of Zhumken Nazhimedenov's works and to the works of K. Zhanuzakova " introduction to literary studies» The significance of the article lies in the analysis of the artistic structure of Zhumeken's stories, which were not analyzed in the prose of past eras. We identified ways to create a female image by comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the history of that period. Everyone knows that W. Nazhimedenov built a virgin land in poetry, and his prose works moved away from the literary arena. From this point of view, in our article we have made every effort to show the power of the author in a prose work and emphasize the skill in creating a female image. At the end of the article, we showed the unity of the image of the lyrical hero and the hero in prose, the specifics of the author's method of description, and the originality of language use.

Iphigenia is the archetype of virgin sacrifice, a daughter dispossessed of her voice and body, killed for the gods, the father and the nation. From Euripides to Racine, from Gluck's opera to Cacoyannis's film, across time and media, Iphigenia has embodied the paradox of a voice that emerges as the condition of its annihilation. Hers is a choiceless choice: to consent to her sacrifice with varying degrees of fervor and possible rationales, to submit to an economy the terms of which are set by capricious gods, a reckless king, a pusillanimous father and a masculine military baying for blood. The daughter embraces her death so that the father's reputation remains intact, so that no more lives are lost in vain, so that the army can set sail. Iphigenia's sacrifice is a familiar cultural script regarding the transactional value of girls under patriarchy. Her sacrifice is the price of entry into a ‘hero-industrial complex’ that positions her simultaneously as protagonist and victim, savior and scapegoat.

The article focuses on the American topic in Turgenev's works. The rise of the diverse image of America drawn by Turgenev is shown in vast framework of what generally was thought about the New World in middle of XIXth century Russia. The author shows certain intersections that existed between the Russian Empire and the United States in the XIXth century, which determines the interest of these countries in each other. Turgenev's interest in the literature and culture of the United States was due not only to the personal tastes of the writer, but also to the general enthusiasm for the New World in Russian society of that time. The main point is the character of “postepenovets” Solomin from the novel Virgin soil. This character comprises several aspects of the major idea of a typical American shared by Russian society in XIXth century. The profound analysis of this last Turgenev's novel lets us to state that the American narrative interests Turgenev due to the new concept of developing Russia from below. Solomin, an American-style "man of real business" is shown like a hero, who can act in the prevailing historical conditions in Russia.

The article examines important anthroponyms in the novel “The Visit” by Frank Peretti, an outstanding author in the genre of Christian fiction whose works are on a par with the stories and novels of Tolkien and Lewis. Anthroponyms in this work of Peretti acquire importance due to the deep meaning connection with the literary, biblical tradition, revealed thanks to the application of the method of careful reading. The author’s naming of his characters testifies to his vision of the text, characters, language picture of the world, and reality, is a factor that determines the ideological and semantic level of the work. Therefore, similar studies open perspectives in these areas. The investigation focuses on the anthropoms of several characters with variants of the name Maria, which also include a significant element of symbolism, several names that belong to one character and reflect the evolution of the hero and his self-identification, mutual reinforcement of the names and surnames of the characters. Thus, for example, the set of names associated with Brandon Nichols (Justin Cantwell) reveals his evolution from a person who succumbs to suffering to a false messiah with signs of false brilliance and pathos. The advantage of this study is taking into account the functionality of anthroponyms, which, thanks to their widespread use, contribute the quality of characters some objects of the story (for example, a church dedicated to the Virgin of the Fields). The mutual strengthening of the meaning of different degrees of anthroponyms can be traced both in characters with a tendency towards a clear homogeneous positive orientation (Marian Ciardelli, Kyle Sherman) and in a hero with a more diverse range of evaluation of personality qualities (Brandon Nichols). The presence of different, unrelated, or little related meanings of the name helps to create a three-dimensional image of the hero, as in the case of Brandon Nichols, and leave the reader free for his/her perception and interpretation of the characters.

The article is devoted to clarifying the problematics and genre originality of the novel “Smoke” by Ivan Turgenev, revealing the universal opposition behind the heroes’ external wars of words, particularly noticeable in the example of the opposition “life — deadness”. The author of the article argues that an important socio-political assessment of the heroes does not convey the entire intention of the writer, presenting the theory of the civilisational development of Russia. One of the main ideas in the civic novel “Smoke” is the idea of progress, which is considered both at the level of disputes between Westernisers and Slavophils, and at the level of ontological life foundations. In the fictional world of the novel, the denied positions of the Slavophils are greatly simplified, and the Westernisers’ views asserted in general are softened and corrected by figurative oppositions. The article demonstrates the connection between the idea of progress and the family theme, the role of the new hero-figure of the post-reform era in the fate of Russia. The novel “Smoke” is considered in the context of Ivan Turgenev’s late creative work, his intertextualities with the stories “Ghosts”, “Enough”, its connection with the subsequent epic novel “Virgin soil” are noted. Special attention is paid to the conflict between the creative hero and the environment, the high society, the path of the personality and the responsibility of a person for each of his actions. The characters of the central characters of the novel are considered, the change in the writer’s intention is shown, gradually reducing the image of Sozont Potugin, whom Ivan Turgenev endowed with thoughts and beliefs dear to him.

Olive oil has compounds that provide health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of diseases. Among olive oil compounds, the phenolic fraction has received considerable attention in recent years. Most common problems are poor absorption, low half-life, due to rapid clearance and inactivation by metabolic enzymes. The development of suitable drug delivery systems and, in particular, of liposomes and immunoliposomes, may be an appropriate strategy for the effective administration of these compounds. Trastuzumab targets the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), which is overexpressed in 20-30% of breast cancers. Using two breast cancer cell lines, with different HER2 expression levels, liposome and immunoliposomes decreased cancer cells viability in a dose-response manner and in correlation to their level of HER2 expression.

To determine the causes for low hunter kill and presumed poor population growth of the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) herd in the High Knob (HK) area of Scott and Wise Counties, Virginia, the relative abundance and nutritional status of the deer herd and the habitat quality of the HK area were studied relative to a deer herd and an area in the Stony Creek (SC) section of Giles County, Virginia, known to produce deer of good physical size and antler development and sustained high hunter harvests. Pellet-group surveys, deer collections in September and March, check station data on hunter-killed deer, soil sampling, and quantitative and qualitative forage analyses were used in assessing the HK deer herd and area. The extent to which poaching, free-roaming dogs, and winter weather might be affecting the HK deer herd also was investigated. Pellet group density was significantly lower (P = 0.004) at HK relative to SC and was believed to be indicative of a somewhat lower herd density at HK. In September, the condition of the HK deer herd was similar to that of the SC deer herd. However, the average number of parasites in the abomasums of HK deer was significantly greater (P = 0.0002) than in the abomasums of SC deer. Yearling bucks killed by hunters at HK had significantly lower eviscerated body weights (P = 0.0001), while all bucks killed by hunters at HK had smaller antler beam diameters (P = 0.006) and fewer antler points (P = 0.0001) relative to hunter-killed deer at SC. Because of an abnormally abundant acorn crop at SC in the fall of 1985 and an abnormally mild winter at HK and an abnormally severe winter at SC in 1986-87, the nutritional condition of the HK deer herd relative to the SC deer herd in March in a "normal" year was difficult to ascertain. However, it was inferred that in a "normal" year the HK deer herd would be in worse physical condition in March relative to the SC deer herd. Soil pH, organic matter, and mineral levels were significantly lower (P < 0.1) at HK than at SC. The HK area had significantly greater (P < 0.1) quantities of various vegetation categories than did the SC area in September, 1986. Quantities of common forages consumed by deer in winter were believed to be similar or slightly lower at HK than at SC. However, the average yearly biomass of acorns was believed to be substantially lower at HK than SC due to the greater percentage of the HK area comprised of yellow poplar dominated forest stands. No clear patterns between areas were evident among the forages analyzed for nutritional components. Poaching and harassment by free-roaming dogs were not believed to be substantially different between areas. However, winter weather severity was much greater at HK that at SC. Based on a 10-year average, snowfall is normally over 3X greater at HK relative to SC. Thus, it was concluded that the HK area has a reduced capacity to support highly dense deer herds due to a lack of quality forages in late fall through late winter and greater winter severity relative to SC.

Veterinary activities at VPI between 1872 and 1959 established the Blacksburg institution as the center of Virginia's veterinary education long before the opening of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1980. This thesis traces the lineage of VPI's veterinary medicine program back to the inception of the institution, locates VPI's contribution to veterinary medicine within the State of Virginia and nationally, and puts all these developments within the general historical context of the role of land-grant agricultural colleges in the development of veterinary medicine. The organization of veterinary activities of the state of Virginia took the form of a veterinary complex, its four main components of education, research, dissemination of veterinary knowledge, and prevention and control of livestock disease located in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries on the VPI campus in Blacksburg. This complex--taken as a whole--functioned as the primary actor in the veterinary network in Virginia--along with other veterinary institutions and offices that existed off- campus. The neglected history of early veterinary research and education in Virginia is important, because it clearly establishes these early veterinary activities at VPI as laying the groundwork for the establishment of the VMRCVM in 1980 and it shows why the VMRCVM was established at VPI (now referred to as Virginia Tech).

This work aims at studying the augury on Virgil s Aeneid Book II, the most important epic poem on Latin literature. Its focus points towards the auguries occurred to Aeneas through the dream about Hector, Panthus speech, Venus warning, Jupiter s omens and Creusa s shadow, looking towards the religious elements by which these auguries bind themselves. The destruction of Troy and Aeneas destiny are foretold on these episodes. Thus, we proposed to analyze such auguries based on theories which embrace the study of narratology, religion and Roman and Greek thinking inside the Roman culture basis tradition, religion and virtue. To better understand of the text and following analysis, we present a general translation from the original text related to the episodes mentioned above.
O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar o augúrio no Livro II da Eneida de Virgílio, poema épico de maior importância da literatura latina. O foco deste estudo se encontra especificamente nos augúrios que se apresentam a Eneias através do sonho com Heitor, do discurso de Panto, da advertência de Vênus, dos presságios de Júpiter e do simulacro de Creúsa, tendo como fio condutor os elementos religiosos pelos quais esses augúrios se interligam. Nesses episódios são anunciados a destruição de Tróia e o destino de Enéias. Propomos analisá-los, considerando teorias que abordem a narratologia, a religião e o pensamento greco-romano dentro da base cultural romana tradição, religião e virtude. Para melhor compreensão do texto e consequente análise, apresentamos uma tradução operacional do texto original, referente aos episódios citados acima.

The goal of this study is to explore the different levels of mentality represented in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway. The study is divided into two parts: in the first part I attempt to explain how the obsession of the self-conscious being with the objectified, unreachable self-image and the truth of the world leads to the rigidity and annihilation of the self, and in the second, to argue that only through the involvement in the immediate, concrete experience with nonparticipation of consciousness can the self-conscious being enjoy a fulfilled life. The discussion will lead to a conclusion that Clarissa Dalloway lives a more fluid, abundant life than the self-obsessed male characters, for she enjoys floating in the present moment with the odds and ends of the external world, not attempting to include the opaque absolute other into her subjectivity. The discussion of the first part is based upon Henri Bergson’s illustration of the unrecognizable inner flux of the self and R. D. Laing’s psychological analysis of a split self. In this part I will examine the depiction of the effect of this inner flux upon consciousness in the novel. This unrecognizable part of the self that is undifferentiated into distinct elements cannot be included into subjectivity through symbolic representation. Thus it becomes an absolute other, an unreachable self-image that, for an egocentric consciousness, threatens the completeness of subjectivity. Being obsessed with the recognition and communication of this inner other, the consciousness falls into a narcissistic state and gradually diminishes into nothing. The desire to include the absolute other into subjectivity traps the self-conscious being in an impasse of incommunicability. In the second part, I will read Clarissa Dalloway as a representation of an alternative mode of living—the nonparticipation of consciousness, the involvement in the immediate experience. Clarissa’s relation to other people and the external world embodies Martin Buber’s “I-You relation,” a relation to the absolute other without imposing, a relation in which one can be completed and fulfilled.

Abstract Lancelot and the Grail would seem to represent opposite poles—the hero whose love for Arthur’s Queen inspires him to become the greatest of all knights, and the holy vessel, from its first appearance (in Chretien’s Conte def Graal) described in a context of Christian ritual as ‘sainte chose’ and in the Vulgate Queste only to be approached by chaste or virgin knights. Yet these two themes and that of the Death of Arthur are combined in the Lancelot-Grail cycle. This vast work fills six volumes in Sommer’s edition, starting with an early History of the Grail, followed by a Merlin, giving an account of the birth of Merlin, the early history of Arthur’s reign (based on Robert de Boron), and a suite leading up to the three volumes of the Lancelot propre (volumes III, IV, and V), the last of which prepares the way for the Queste. The cycle ends with la Mort Artu. The contrasts and contradictions (including a reference to Perceval/Perlesvaus as Grailwinner and accomplisher of the adventure of the Perilous Seat) within a closely interlacing structure have puzzled and fascinated scholars for more than a hundred years.

Returning to Europe in 1925, Lawrence abandoned politics and went back to love and sex as his principal concerns. In The Virgin and the Gipsy, sex’s transforming power takes a semi-allegorical form but then, in three successive versions of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Lawrence recast the essentials of his story in a more realist mode. The decision to publish privately allowed him to describe sexual intercourse explicitly and produce passages which, in the 1960s, helped to make him an unlikely hero of sexual liberation. Some of these are indeed beautiful yet, in `the night of sensual passion’ episode, the old concern with anal intercourse re-appears and passages from the novel which defence witnesses at the trial took care not to read out include Mellors’s unpleasant account of his sexual history, with its bitter complaints about women who `grind their own coffee’. There is some romantic nostalgia in Lady Chatterley’s Lover, perhaps relating to the fact that Lawrence was impotent when he wrote it; but its evident flaws make it unfortunate that the interest it incites distracts attention from the fine writing he did afterwards, in Etruscan Places or The Man Who Died, for example, or in the later poetry.

Abstract The enormous geographical expanse of the United States, the relatively dispersed pattern of population and its diversity, and the continuing force of economic development have made the concepts of time and space a mainstay of the culture. Historians have not been unaware of the importance of these two dimensions, as these familiar formulations make plain: “the frontier thesis,” “the hero lost in time and space,” “people of plenty,” “virgin land,” “machine in the garden,” and, more recently, “the culture of time and space.”2 Political rhetoric has often added a note of futurity, from “city upon the hill” to “Manifest Destiny” to “the New Frontier.” While some of these views of historians and politicians acknowledge the impact of rapid economic development upon the concepts, none adequately accounts for the role played by print culture, as traced in these pages, in changing spatial and temporal perceptions and the location of American identity within these dimensions. There was, as will be discussed, a dynamic quality to the varying dispositions of time, space, identity, and the printed word in each of the four major historical periods before the Civil War: the colonial era, the period of the American Revolution and early republic, the early nineteenth century, and the antebellum years.

Abstract The young Mary, recently espoused, responds with a question indicative of her expectation that her marriage to Joseph would involve normal marital sexuality. If, for the moment, we read her question as an actual response, literally that is, apart from Luke’s interest in depicting Christ as the messianic fulfillment of the Isaian prophecy (Isaiah 7:14), and its dense “labryinth of Old Testament reminiscence,” its historical importance for the development of conventions concerning celibacy becomes more apparent.1 Mary’s query provokes the fullness of the angelic prophecy: female virginity is the ideal vessel for the reception of the Spirit. But her question was perceived as fraught with nuance: from the Protoevangelium of James (ca. 140?) to the English Speculum Sacerdotale (ca. 1415), exegetes read her question as a troubled, doubtful one: “sche was trowbiled in hure-self, and no3t for the vision of the angel but for his wordis.”2 Her virginity, they believed she knew, would exact a great price: risk of losing her spouse, the denial of family and children, and the burden, however blessed, of being the bearer of the Christ, Theotokos.3

Abstract This chapter explores the embodied musical world of nuns in early modern New Spain, as it relates the concept of immaculate sounds to the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception and the ideal of virginity. The sonification of virginity and the Virgin Mary became especially meaningful for nuns who vowed to defend the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception upon professing. Mary was framed as a resonator of God’s voice, sonified and tied to the Incarnation through the daily singing of her Magnificat, which was essential to belief in her virginal status. The concept of virginity was moreover rhetorically associated with an aesthetically appealing imagined sound. In this regard, this chapter also shows that the conflict between the Church’s virginal ideal for nuns and the reality of non-virgin and indigenous women wishing to profess as nuns was sublimated to yield immaculate sounds.

This is an attempt of interpretation of a picture that draws from mystical tradition. It is about the comprehension of a topic in a painting by the Spanish artist Alonso Cano (1601–1667, Granada), from the National Gallery in Prague (O 14 690) Lactatio S. Bernardi – presenting the miracle of lactation, in which the Virgin Mary is squirting milk from her breast into the mouth of St. Bernard of Clairvaux (a historically very famous saint and major representative of the Cistercian Order). Traces of iconography lead up to the Coptic Church, where the typology of the milking Virgin was probably first originated (Galacto Trofusa in Greek or Maria lactans in Latin). The starting point is perhaps the portrayal of the virgin goddess Isis milking her son Horus. In many cultures, milk symbolises physical and spiritual food (e.g. the Milky Way evoking the ancient myth about spurted divine milk). On the other hand, milking is also present in the Old Testament as the image of special blessing; it is a symbol of eternal beatitude and wisdom. The dream/vision of her milk is then – apart from the rest – a sign of abundance, fertility, love, and fullness. The lactation of St. Bernard is an allegory of the penetration of the divine science in the soul. Thanks to this act the saint receives God’s guide, which he can then discharge into his writings.

Abstract Flame spread and fire over cellulosic materials occur when the burning region supplies sufficient heat to the virgin solid to cause gasification. Under proper conditions, the reaction between the generated volatiles and the oxidant (air) may be sustained. The characteristics of the flame spread are therefore the result of heat and mass transfer processes as well as finite-rate gas phase chemical kinetics. We describe here a new three-dimensional mathematical model to study flame spread over cellulosic fuels. Both the pyrolysis and burning of a vertical timber wall of a room and the turbulent flow, combustion and radiation in the room, are included. The predictions of this model have been compared with the results of an experiment. Excellent agreement has been achieved.

The Alta field in the Barents Sea was discovered in 2014. The reservoir formation is primarily carbonate rocks with high formation water salinity. Extensive waterflooding processes have led to an approximately 200-m rise of water level. The complexities anduncertainties regarding imbibition, current free waterlevel, and pseudo fluid contacts within the field translateinto uncertainty in the hydrocarbon volume estimation. Initial, triple-combo-based petrophysical evaluations have already been updated using advanced log measurements, as reported in an earlier publication. The evaluation is now consolidated by using two new techniques relying on advanced spectroscopy logging and combination with dielectric dispersion logging. Their objective is to further reduce the uncertainty in water saturation associated with variable apparent water salinity. The present contribution proposes a workflow that relies on two novel techniques. The first technique is a direct quantitative measurement of formation chlorine concentration from nuclear spectroscopy, which helps resolve the formation's apparent water salinity and provides a way to calibrate formation matrix sigma. The second technique relies on the existing combined inversion of dielectric dispersion and formation sigma, including explicitly invasion effects. This second technique benefits from the first technique's insight to adjust sigma interpretation and provide bounds for possible salinity variations. The workflow provides robust flushed and unflushed zone salinities, here the most uncertain and variable parameter, combined with accurate estimations of virgin and residual hydrocarbon saturations. The quantification of dielectric textural parameters describing how the water is shaped inside the formation is also improved, contributing to the improvement of virgin zone hydrocarbon saturation estimation.

Artificial muscle systems have the potential to impact many technologies ranging from advanced prosthesis to miniature robotics. Recently, it has been shown that twisting drawn polymer fibers such as nylon can result in torsional or tensile actuators depending on the final fiber configuration. The actuation phenomenon relies on the anisotropic nature of the fibers moduli and thermal expansion. They have high axial stiffness, low shear stiffness, and expand more radially when heated than axially. If a polymer fiber is twisted but not coiled, these characteristics result in a torsional actuator that will untwist when heated. During the fabrication process, these twisted polymers can be configured helically before annealing. In this configuration, the untwisting that occurs in a straight twisted fiber results in a contraction or extension depending on relative directions of twist and coiling. In these ways, these materials can be used to create both torsional or axial actuators with extremely high specific work capabilities. To date, the focus of research on twisted polymer actuators (TPAs) and twisted-coiled polymer actuators (TCPAs) has been actuator characterization that demonstrates the technologies capabilities. Our work focuses here on applying a 2D analysis of individual layers of the TPAs to predict thermally induced twisting angle and fiber length based on virgin (untwisted) material properties and actuator parameters like fiber length and inserted twist. A multi-axis rheometer with a controlled thermal environmental chamber was used to twist, anneal, and test thermally induced actuation. Experimentally measured angle of untwist and axial contraction after heating are compare the the model. In comparing the experimental results with the two dimensional model, it appears that the difference between the 2D model and experimental results can be explained by the longitudinal stresses that develop inside the material. Future work will aim to include these effects in the model in order to be able to use this model in the design of TPAs.

Abstract Oxide scale formation in the inner bore of steam tubing has been identified as a key metric for determining operational parameters and life expectancy of modern boiler systems. Grade 91 tubing is commonly used for the construction of key components within boiler systems designed for power generation operating in the temperature range of 500 to 650 °C. Standard laboratory test procedures involve grinding the surface of test coupons to homogenise their surface structure and improve experimental consistency, however, data presented here shows a discrepancy between laboratory and industrial practices that has long term implications on scale growth kinetics and morphological development. Microstructural analysis of both virgin and ex-service tubing reveals the presence of a pre-existing oxide structure that is incorporated into the inwardly growing scale and is implicated in the formation of multiple laminar void networks. These void networks influence thermal diffusivity across the scale and may function as regions of spallation initiation and propagation.

The images of Orthodox churches in the Natalia Ilyina’s books are fragmentary, but with careful reading they allow us to restore the cultural image of Harbin in the first half of the twentieth century. Natalia Ilyina never writes the full names of temples and, most often, uses the word “church” in books. The writer tells about a variety of Orthodox places in Harbin: St. Nicholas Cathedral (St. Nicholas Cathedral) Cathedral (not far from it the writer lived in the first years of her stay in Harbin), as well as a number of other Harbin churches: St. Sophia Cathedral (the Church of St. Sophia, St. Sophia Church), the temple of the Iver Icon of the Mother of God, the Alekseevskaya Church in Modyagou (the name of one of the districts of Harbin), the Kazan-Bogoroditsky Monastery and the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin. Natalia Ilyina associates the Orthodox Church not only with religion, but with the space in which the heroes of the books dream about their future, go through difficult times of personal and public life, and remember Russia.

Abstract The small punch (SP) test technique is expected to become a more common tool for estimating tensile properties since the technique has been approved for standardization and will be published early 2020 as EN-10371. The testing technique is naturally of interest in the nuclear field due to the small amount of material needed for estimating the properties of both virgin and irradiation damaged materials. In the project STRUMAT-LTO, supported within the Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform (SNETP), there is intention to use both miniature uniaxial test specimen as well as miniature SP specimen to assess the influence of high fluence irradiation on mechanical properties of the samples of the joint NRG-JRC irradiation campaign LYRA-10. The alloys represented in the irradiation campaign are variations of VVER and PWR reactor pressure vessel steels with tailor made chemical compositions. Four of the PWR model steels are tested here with miniature uniaxial specimens using the SP technique at room temperature (RT) and 100°C in as-received material state and at RT for heat treated (450°C / 40 h) material. The SP samples were extracted from used KLST (miniature Charpy) specimens. The results of this test program are expected to provide the basis for the future development of material property determination of irradiated materials.

Sieve residues from the powder recycling stream in Laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) processing of Inconel 625 are currently disposed of as hazardous waste, which conflicts with circular economy thinking. Here, the synthesis of metal matrix composites (MMCs) based on carbide- and oxide-strengthening phases finely dispersed in a Multi-Principal Element Alloy (MPEA) matrix was explored as a recycling option for these powders. In particular, mixtures of virgin metal powders and a spent Inconel 625 powder were mechanical alloyed and consolidated by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). The process control agent (PCA, ethanol) used during mechanical alloying acted as a source for C and O in the subsequent crystallization of nano-sized carbides and oxides during sintering. By carefully controlling the powder mixture composition, MPEA matrices with different contents of Nb and Mo in the face-centered cubic structure were obtained, as revealed by X-ray Powder diffraction. The bulk samples were further characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and preliminary mechanical analyses using instrumented indentation. The results showed that spent powder of Inconel 625 was a valuable source of 4d transition metals for the synthesis of MMCs based on a MPEA matrix with enhanced solid solution strengthening and finely dispersed ceramic phases.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland's Community Issues Survey (CIS) collects information semiannually from direct service providers to monitor economic conditions and identify issues impacting low- and moderate-income (LMI) households in the Fourth District—a region that includes Ohio, western Pennsylvania, eastern Kentucky, and the northern panhandle of West Virginia. In March 2023, we surveyed more than 600 service providers who directly serve LMI individuals and communities across our District and received 95 responses (15 percent response rate). The results of this survey, summarized here, provide insights into how organizations and the households they serve are faring as they continue to navigate the impacts of inflation.

In March 2024, we surveyed nearly 600 organizations that directly serve LMI individuals and communities across our District and received 100 responses (17 percent response rate). The results of this survey are summarized here and provide insights into how organizations and the households they serve are faring as they continue to navigate the impacts of inflation.

Global oyster abundance has declined ~85 % over the past 200 years, primarily because of overharvesting (Beck, Brumbaugh, and Airoldi 2011; Kirby 2004). Healthy oyster reef systems benefit the environment in many ways, including water-quality improvement, shoreline protection, increased biological and habitat diversity, and carbon sequestration. To maintain these environmental benefits, reef-restoration efforts that produce healthy, sustainable oyster reefs are essential. To this end, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has been involved in reef-restoration projects in many locations, including extensive efforts in the Chesapeake Bay (Virginia, Maryland), coastal regions of New York and New Jersey, and the Gulf of Mexico. There are many benefits to creating and maintaining oyster reef systems that are well connected, for both oysters and other organisms within the reef and surrounding habitats. This technical note presents the current knowledge of benefits and costs to restore oyster-reef connectivity along the East and Gulf Coasts of North America. Connectivity of oyster reefs can refer to the physical location of reefs with respect to one another as well as to the dynamics of the genetic links within a metapopulation or to the extent to which larval transport and recruitment unite reef communities. For the purposes of this technical note, connectivity is defined as the spatial aggregation of reefs, though we address impacts of genetic and larval flow as well. Reef connectivity positively affects many ecosystem services and dynamics but can also have unintended consequences (that is, negative externalities). This technical note reviews the benefits and costs of increasing connectivity and presents a brief example of how trade-offs may occur between these potentially opposing ecological objectives. Here, we focus on the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, which inhabits the East and Gulf Coasts of North America, though many of the concepts and principles discussed may apply to other oyster species as well.
