This paper describes a critical situation for Italy, which is one of the causes of the overall disorganization of settlement growth in the past decades. Using the data extracted from some institutional databases, we show that a large part of the national territory is managed with highly effective decision-making tools (such as municipal town planning schemes in Italy), which are, however, lagging behind in their conception and fulfilment of scientific, cultural, and political requirements deemed essential today for effective and sustainable land transformation. Municipalities with plans dating back to a quarter of a century ago, or without any plans, are 1445 in number (17% of the total) and involve 6,200,000 ha of territory (1/5 of Italy) with almost 10 million residents. The territorial changes in these geographical areas, mainly concentrated in the south, are managed with tools based on mid-20th century concepts and techniques, although a large proportion of these territories are demographically active and transform substantial portions of land. Thus, for at least 15–20 years, these territories underwent transformations disconnected from town plans and driven essentially by one-off measures or managed through numerous exceptional and negotiated procedures provided for by national legislation. Today, it seems necessary for southern Italy to overcome its extensive delay in territorial planning, and the drive can only come from national government. This would help it finally respond to current environmental sustainability, risk resilience, and territorial security requirements, through appropriate and technically advanced management procedures not envisaged in previous planning procedures.

The urban renewal is the inevitable product during the urban development process. Chongqing has been carrying out a serious of reconstruction and urban revitalization during these years, and the SHI-BA-TI area is included in the process. SHI-BA-TI area is one of the most famous sight-spots of Chongqing which represents the traditional culture spirit of the city. So that the high-valuable culture features of the site should be reserved in the reconstruction project and expressed in new way with creative method. The concept of my design is reserving the “old core and skin” while adding in the “new core and skin”. This reconstruction design achieved the objective that reserving the historic and cultural core of the site while adding some urban public functions upon the site, which makes the site correspond to the land value of the city center and help with enhancing the status and image of the city center.

The management of winemaking enterprises in Australia has become complex because of the increased complexity of the market and the winemaking process itself. Accurate record keeping goes hand-in-hand with complex sequencing of processes required to efficiently operate these enterprises. Unfortunately, the record keeping aspect is often regarded as an added burden to the process rather than a necessary step within it. The ability to link obligatory record keeping with the function of controlling the winemaking and grape-growing processes offers many benefits to the enterprise management as long as the performance of these functions is able to facilitate the control of these processes and not become the added burden they fear. The benefits come in the form of enhanced and useful records for the winemaker to truly understand the cause and effect of decision making and individual processes in their winemaking. The records capture the intent and motivation of the decisions as well as the results themselves, thereby potentially revealing the implications and relative performance of their actions. The aim of this project was to investigate the practicality and scope of building a computer-based vineyard and winery managements system (VWMS) that is capable of fitting in and enhancing the grape-growing and winemaking process for the operator, not simply providing a means of generating reports for the tax department or AWBC auditors. A system was developed based on extensive ethnographic research of many vineyard and winery operations as well as recorded interviews with dozens of key professionals in the Australian wine industry with vastly different roles within it. It was designed to be intuitive, thorough, and flexible enough for use by operators with very different techniques and levels of intervention in the process. It was able to take into account the relative sizes of the enterprises from the very small, up to medium sized wine making enterprises. Several new virtual concepts were introduced to enable the data model to link and translate the real activities of winemaking into objects. These functions and processes were easily understood because they were simply formal declarations of practices that were normally carried out, but not formally named or declared in the industry. The system was successfully piloted at a winery featured in the case studies and continues to be the primary winemaking reporting system for the enterprise.

THESE INCLUDE ANALYZING LOG DATA OF VARYING VINTAGES WHERE ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS, LOWER VERTICAL RESOLUTION AND SHALLOWER DEPTH OF INVESTIGATION HAVE A GREATER IMPACT ON THE DATA THAN WITH MODERN LOGS. IF NEW WELLS ARE DRILLED AND LOGGED WITH MODERN SENSORS THAT ARE LESS AFFECTED BY ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS, THIS CAN BE OFFSET BY THE UNCERTAINTY FROM THE CHANGES IN FLUID PROPERTIES OF FORMATION WATER AND HYDROCARBONS DUE TO PRESSURE DEPLETION, WATER FLOODING AND/OR GAS INJECTION. IF NO NEW WELLS ARE DRILLED, CASED HOLE LOGGING CAN BE USED ON EXISTING WELLS TO RE-EVALUATE THE REMAINING OIL IN PLACE, BUT THIS CAN BRING ADDITIONAL INTERPRETATION CHALLENGES DUE TO CEMENT QUALITY ISSUES, PERFORATIONS, DOWNHOLE COMPLETION HARDWARE AND VARYING WELL-BORE FLUIDS. EVEN WITH THESE CHALLENGES, THERE ARE MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENHANCED OIL RECOVERY IN MATURE FIELDS THAT JUSTIFY EITHER CASED LOGGING ON OLDER WELLS OR DRILLING NEW WELLS TO EVALUATE THE REMAINING OIL IN PLACE. EVALUATING THE DATA FROM EITHER SCENARIO CAN BE FACILITATED WITH RECENT ADVANCEMENTS IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND TOOL RESPONSE MODELING FOR THE EXPECTED DOWNHOLE WELL-BORE CONDITIONS AND FORMATION FLUIDS FOR BOTH OPEN-HOLE AND CASED HOLE LOGGING AND SHOULD PROVIDE MORE ACCURATE ANALYSIS FOR MATURE FIELD DEVELOPMENT PLANNING.

As part of a program to increase the operating pressure of a 20” (508.0mm) natural gas pipeline, a careful plan was developed and executed to ensure the integrity of the pipeline. The pipeline was built in 1943 using linepipe produced having a DC ERW longitudinal seam weld and travels along a densely populated route in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The work plan included ILI inspection methods to detect corrosion (MFL tool), mechanical damage (geometry tool), and ERW seam weld defects (TFI MFL tool). After the anomalies were identified and the necessary pipe replacements were completed, the pipeline was hydrostatically tested prior to being returned to service at the newly established operating pressure. The paper will describe the project planning process used to ensure the fitness and reliability of the pipeline and provide a review of the ILI results, excavations, pipe replacements, and hydrostatic test experiences. Of particular interest were the capabilities and limitations of the TFI tool to detect, discriminate, and size ERW seam weld defects. Seam weld defects were evaluated using ILI inspection methods and in many cases field prove-up ultrasonic inspection methods. When an ERW defect was confirmed by field NDT prove-up, the pipe section was removed and metallographic work was conducted to characterize the ERW flaw size and nature. A correlation was then possible between the sizing capability of the TFI tool, the ultrasonic prove-up method, and the actual defect size. All this information is useful to establish a level of confidence in defect sizing for future project needs. The final validation of the pipeline fitness at the higher operating pressure was established through the successful hydrostatic test. A short summary will be given on how the pipeline fitness was qualified and demonstrated.

Moving power generation equipment is a major undertaking under the best of circumstances. This paper documents the project to provide more reliable backup power for the island of Gotland, off the coast of Sweden in the Baltic Sea. All the power for this scenic island is normally supplied by two sub-sea, HVDC cables from the Swedish mainland. In the early 1990’s, the power company started the planning to redeploy some of their peaking generation assets more effectively on Gotland. Providing the island with more generating capacity and faster recovery in the event of a partial or total loss of the DC tie-line was deemed a worthy endeavor. Preparations to move the two 60 MW AVON Quad-pack gas turbine-generators were initiated late in 1994. In addition to commencing green-field site construction to receive the units, the company initiated a controls retrofit of the 1970-vintage units with new fault-tolerant combustion and generation automatic voltage regulation control systems to the relocated turbines. The scope and timeline for this complex, fast-track project are described along with specific challenges. Results versus expectations are also documented.

3D Seismic survey of an area approximately 70km2 was conducted in South-East Central Trinidad in the Naparima Mayaro Reserve from January to July 1999. This activity was done with the expectation of drilling exploratory wells for finding commercially viable oil reservoirs as a joint venture operation between Vintage Petroleum Trinidad Limited (formerly Cometra Energy (Canada) Limited) and Petrotrin. The companies initiated a number of proactive Environmental Management Programmes to comply with both local and international regulations. These programmes include: • Preliminary Environmental Impact Assessment Study for Seismic Survey of a 70km2 area. • Environmental Baseline Survey for Seismic Survey inclusive of descriptions of physical, biological and socioeconomic environments, environmental audits, training and monitoring (noise and water quality). • Environmental Impact Assessment for drilling of exploratory well. • Development of Oil Spill Contingency Plan for drilling operations. The implementation of these studies resulted in a number of benefits to the joint venture oil companies, such as: • 100% compliance with Certificate of Environment Clearance Rules and International Association of Geophysical Contractors (IAGC) Guidelines. • Improved corporate image. • Enhanced relationship with Government Agencies. • Improved environmental performance through proper planning. • Trained and empowered workforce in environmental management issues. • Zero oil spills and environmental incidents to date.

Abstract Mature fields already account for about 70% of the hydrocarbon liquids produced globally. Since the average recovery factor for oil fields is 30 to 35%, there is substantial quantities of remaining oil at stake. Conventional simulation-based development planning approaches are well established, but their implementation on large, complex mature oil fields remains challenging given their resource, time, and cost intensity. In addition, increased attention towards reduce carbon emissions makes the case for alternative, computationally-light techniques, as part of a global digitalisation drive, leveraging modern analytics and machine learning methods. This work describes a modern digital workflow to identify and quantify by-passed oil targets. The workflow leverages an innovative hybrid physics-guided data-driven, which generates historical phase saturation maps, forecasts future fluid movements and locate infill opportunities. As deliverables, a fully probabilistic production forecast is obtained for each drilling location, as a function of the well type, its geometry, and position in the field. The new workflow can unlock remaining potential of mature fields in a shorter time-frame and generally very cost-effectively compared to the advanced dynamic reservoir modelling and history-match workflows. Over the last 5 years, this workflow has been applied to more than 30 mature oil fields in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Three case studies’ examples and application environments of applied digital workflow are described in this paper. This study demonstrates that it is now possible to deliver digitalized locating the remaining oil projects, capturing the full uncertainty ranges, including leveraging complex multi-vintage spatial 4D datasets, providing reliable non-simulation physics-compliant data-driven production forecasts within weeks.
