This article concentrates on setting the moment when use of force in self defense becomes justified under public international law and comments on occasionally postulated doctrine of pre-emptive self defense. The author identifies four views on that matter, represented by the scholars, shows their legal justifications and points out potential legal issues connected to their use, both from the legal and practical point of view. The article also presents examples of use of force in order to illustrate presented issues.

The subject of this work is specific aspects of the formation of the psychological, intellectual, and physical readiness of a civilian for adversity and adequate actions in risk situations in the context of systematic preparation for self-defense. The purpose of the study was to clarify the views of the authors on the peculiarities of the development of martial arts and the adaptation of their elements into the system of combat sports as part of special physical training for self-defense. The content of the work complements the range of views on the conditions and content of physical training of students in the process of studying the educational discipline "basics of self-defense" and objectively draws attention to the topic of the origin and development of martial arts as the basis for an in-depth study of the forms, methods and means of self-defense and the creation of motivational components for mastering their wide spectrum of possibilities. The article presents the historical stages of the birth of martial arts as a social necessity to maintain military affairs at a high level. The work substantiates the relevance of studies of students’ training in the formation of readiness for self-defense in moments of rapid emergence of negative problems associated with an extreme situation, the need for active defense against criminal actions. The views of the authors of scientific and pedagogical literature on the sociological features of the emergence of martial arts, the implementation of their methodical foundations in the context of training for combat sports and, as a result, special physical training for self-defense, are considered. The outline of the essence of the scientific novelty of the research is to direct attention to the study of social and historical prerequisites for the emergence of existing methods of self-defense and the vision of their deterministic options for development in the conditions of martial law. The conclusions emphasize the need to introduce aspects of the study of the causes and consequences of the emergence of certain forms, methods and means of ensuring special personal safety in terms of active physical defense into the educational material "the basis of self-defense".

The purpose of the study was to clarify the views of the authors on the methodological features of using sports training in martial arts (boxing, kickboxing, combat section of sambo) as a special physical training of students (civilians) for self-defense. In the work, a theoretical analysis of general characteristics and components in the directions of the educational and training process of various types of martial arts is carried out; separate signs of common features and differences are highlighted for synthesis into a comprehensive preparation for self-defense in extreme situations of confrontation with criminal attacks on a civilian. The novelty of the study should be considered the views proposed by the authors on the adaptation of the experience of some methodological features in the training of law enforcement officers to confront offenses by means of physical influence to the process of training students (civilians) for self-defense. The conclusions indicate the possibility of preparing students for self-defense by means of martial arts (boxing, kickboxing, combat section of sambo) with the provision of tactical, psychological, and legal training.

Many libertarians assume that there is a close relation between an individual’s self-ownership and her freedom. That relation needs questioning. In this article it is argued that, even in a pre-property state, self-ownership is insufficient to protect freedom. Therefore, libertarians who believe in self-ownership should either offer a defense of freedom that is independent from their defense of self-ownership, make it explicit that they hold freedom as second to self-ownership (and defend that position), or reconsider the moral basis of their political views.

Paranoia has been hypothesized to be negatively correlated with self–esteem. However, hypotheses differ about how low self–esteem might produce paranoia. The paranoia as defense model views paranoia as a defensive reaction against low self–esteem. In contrast, the paranoia as expression model views paranoia in part as a reflection of low self–esteem. In the current study, paranoia was negatively associated with global explicit self–esteem, self–competence, self–liking and self–serving attributional style, but unassociated with implicit self–esteem as measured with the Implicit Association Test. In contrast, facets of narcissism, which also have been hypothesized to be associated with defensive self–processing, were associated with defensiveness. Overall, these results suggest that paranoia is better represented by the expression model. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The current study tries to shed light on various problemsand lobbies in defense deals and also tries to understand breakthroughs in technology in defense products fromthe Indian private and public sectors, “Make in India” promotes employment opportunities and skill developmentin the defense and aerospace sectors. Through semantic foreign direct investment in defense technologies, wecan have good diplomatic and economic relations with other countries.

The purpose of the empirical study is assessment or the correlation among disorders of operational level of self-regulation with psychological security parameters, psychological defense mechanisms, and personality traits of young people with affective disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study involved 60 people aged 20-25, 30 of which had affective disorders. In the test group regulative dysfunctions of processes of modelling, programming, results and independence evaluation are due to non-adaptive defense mechanisms of projection, regression, and substitution, security basis views bias as well as self-criticism. People with affective disorders satisfy their security need looking for supportive external environment rather than their intellectual and volitional activity.

The article deals with a range of security and defense issues that are at the forefront of the transatlantic debate. The Unites States was a key actor in shaping plans to set up Europe's defense in the post-war period. The debate on a “European defense” has considerably evolved since the late 1940s, so has the U.S. attitude. The dispute heated up in recent years with the U.S. strategic priorities shifting towards the Indo-Pacific, degrading security situation in Europe, and a “strategic autonomy” concept mooted within the EU. The controversies over European defense capabilities have revealed contrasting views on the subject. By examining the arguments of proponents and opponents of making Europe a self-sufficient player in defense area, the author figured out reasons explaining why it is hard to reconcile overlapping interests of the United States as the main security guarantor in NATO with the European Union’s ambitious, although ambiguous, intention of driving towards a strategic autonomy.

The author's purpose in this essay is, first of all, to evaluate the recent assessments of the self given by Stanley Hauerwas and Rowan Williams. Second, in registering his reservations with these views, he claims that confessional theologians have rich resources for shaping a powerful and innovative redescription of the tradition of transcendental subjectivity that does not conclude in, or require, the self's disappearance (or the concomitant annihilation of interiority). The person willed by God into being possesses a certain formfulness that is neither pure intentionality nor interiority, a certain formful unity constitutive of its being created in the image of God. Third, the author argues that Dietrich Bonhoeffer's christological account of the self, supplemented by Eberhard Jüngel's trinitarian account, offers a promising alternative to Hauerwas and Williams. The article's general concern is to show that modern theology does itself and Christian congregations a disservice if it fails to appreciate the depth, complexity and created dignity of human personhood.

Abstract How should our metaphysical commitments influence how we think of ourselves in the practical world? Hume and Buddhism share common ground in denying that there exists a metaphysically real self yet offer very different practical recommendations about how this metaphysical view ought to inform our practical identities. This paper explores the contrast between the two views. It examines the benefits and costs of embracing, and attaching to, a practical conception of the self in the absence of a metaphysical self and provides a qualified defense of the Humean approach by way of considering the joys of attachment.

Shedding new light on a controversial and intriguing issue, this book will reshape the debate on how the Judeo-Christian tradition views the morality of personal and national self-defense. Are self-defense, national warfare, and revolts against tyranny holy duties?or violations of God's will? Pacifists insist these actions are the latter, forbidden by Judeo-Christian morality. This book maintains that the pacifists are wrong. To make his case, the author analyzes the full sweep of Judeo-Christian history from earliest times to the present, combining history, scriptural analysis, and philosophy to describe the changes and continuity of Jewish and Christian doctrine about the use of lethal force. He reveals the shifting patterns of thought in both religions and presents the strongest arguments on both sides of the issue. The book begins with the ancient Hebrews and Genesis and covers Jewish history through the Holocaust and beyond. The analysis then shifts to the story of Christianity from its origins, through the Middle Ages and the Reformation, up the present day. Based on this scrutiny, the author concludes that?contrary to popular belief?the legitimacy of self-defense is strongly supported by Judeo-Christian scripture and commentary, by philosophical analysis, and by the respect for human dignity and human rights on which both Judaism and Christianity are based.

Chapter 8 discusses people’s tendencies to defend their views on how the world should look and what exact role affective processes and feelings play in these defensive responses. The chapter delineates that worldview-defense reactions tend to be “hot-cognitive” reactions, consisting of a combination of how situations are interpreted, assessed, and appraised and the feelings associated with these interpretations, assessments, and appraisals. The chapter examines three levels of analysis at which feelings play a role in radicalization: (1) individual defensive responses involve processes of self-esteem perseverance; (2) group responses include the buffering role of culture; and (3) ideological and religious concerns often serve important psychological functions that are of special relevance to radicalizing individuals and radical groups and subcultures.

Much contemporary just war theory is modeled on the theory of self-defense. The dominant account of rights used by people interested in the right of self-defense is doubly problematic: its internal tensions undermine the plausibility of the views people try to defend, and it is in some ways morally distorting. This book is primarily concerned with developing and then deploying a new account of rights, one that will put the discussion of the right to defend against threats on more solid footing. The introductory chapter covers four themes. First, to explain why the current state of just war theory calls for a new account of rights, the chapter traces a brief history of recent discussions of the right of self-defense. Second, the chapter describes when it is permissible to defend against threats. Third, it explains how this relates to current law and to other philosophical work on the topic. Finally, it sketches an outline of the rest of the book.

This history grounded both rights and duties to resist tyrannical government initially in religious understanding and obligations, before it shifted to a more individualized level as the American Revolution approached.

Abstract This chapter considers how moral duties not to harm and those to aid differ, the idea of morally innocent threats, and the role of self-defense in making one safe when not all are safe. These ideas are used to help justify twelve proposals for dealing with future pandemics, including some moral requirements, that aim to be consistent with the views of even those most concerned about personal liberty. The chapter also examines the limits some moral philosophers recommend on interpersonally aggregating losses and benefits and how this affects the morality of hospitals postponing elective medical procedures and the morality of requiring lockdowns. It concludes that imposing relatively small harms on each of many people in order to prevent loss of others’ lives could sometimes be justified to those with libertarian-like views.

This chapter examines Alexis de Tocqueville's defense of political engagement as instrumental good. Tocqueville's insights on attention and energy and their importance for sustainable self-government comprise one of his more original—and overlooked—contributions to political theory. Tocqueville actually distinguishes between political and social engagement, explains why political attention and energy will probably founder in most liberal democracies, and proposes a number of avenues for resisting those tendencies. The chapter analyzes Tocqueville's views on political engagement and the obstacles it faces when citizens are free to invest their time and resources as they like. Drawing mostly from his book Democracy in America, the discussion focuses on his arguments regarding citizens' energies, individual and collective energy, the “doctrine of self-interest well understood,” political attention, township administration, and political and civil associations.

Against the widespread view of judicial review as an expertocratic shortcut that requires citizens to blindly defer to the political decisions of judges, the analysis shows that the institutions of judicial review empower citizens to make effective use of their right to participate in ongoing political struggles for determining the proper scope of their fundamental rights and freedoms. This is true no matter how idiosyncratic their fellow citizens may think their interests, views, and values are. By securing citizens’ right to legal contestation, judicial review offers citizens a way to avoid having to blindly defer to the decisions of their fellow citizens. This is the case insofar as it offers an institutional venue where they can call their fellow citizens to account by effectively requesting that proper reasons are publicly offered to justify the laws and policies to which they all are subject. It is in virtue of this communicative power that all citizens can participate as political equals in the ongoing process of shaping and forming a considered public opinion that supports the political decisions that they can all own and identify with—just as the democratic ideal of self-government requires.

Chapter 5 examines four categories of attempted philosophical justification for terrorist acts in certain circumstances. Each one, in different ways, reflects less formal and less carefully articulated views that are proclaimed not only by those who resort to terrorist acts but also by many members of the general public throughout the world, especially when the acts purporting to be justified are committed by their own people or others with whose cause they sympathize. The justifications considered are: utilitarian/consequentialist arguments that may reject the principle of discrimination outright; the argument from self-defense; the tit-for-tat argument; and the argument from the need for a fighting chance. These four attempted justifications raise a more general and very challenging issue about the difficulties of moral philosophizing in the face of absolute moral prohibitions.

This chapter offers a philosophically sophisticated defense of the Buddhist account of karma in the face of critiques by non-Buddhist philosophers, such as Kumārila and Uddyotakara. The authors show how, if the concept of causality is available, Buddhists can provide reductive accounts of a variety of ordinary concepts and thereby establish the consistency of their views about karma with the doctrine of no-self. They then consider deep and powerful objections against the possibility of a Buddhist understanding of causality, including a version of the argument of the three times. In response, the authors propose a sophisticated regularity theory of causation, showing how an understanding of causality as based on regularities in our experience can permit causal relations to obtain conventionally, even if all things are without causal activity (nirvyāpāra).

This chapter examines whether the death penalty violates human rights. It begins with a discussion of the argument that all punishment must be inflicted in cold blood; whatever damage we do to others not in cold blood is not punishment but self-defense or revenge. It asserts that we may inflict whatever punishment is necessary to deter wrongdoing and that the death penalty raises no questions of justice that are different in kind from those raised by other forms of punishment, but that death as contrasted with incarceration may be thought to raise questions about irreversibility that are different in degree. It also considers the claim that a failure of fairness in the criminal justice system makes all punishment suspect. Finally, it tackles the question of how we should discuss the penalty of death by drawing on the views of Joseph de Maistre.

Abstract bp's Wells Organization manages its operational risks through what is known as the ‘Three Lines of Defense’ model. This is a three-tiered approach that starts with self-verification as the first line of defense which Wells assets apply to prevent or mitigate operational risks. The second line is conducted by its Safety and Operational Risk function using deep technical expertise. The third line of defense is provided by Group Audit. This paper will discuss the Wells self-verification programme evolution from its first implementation; results, lessons learned, and further steps planned as part of the continuous improvement cycle will be also shared. The company's Wells organization identified nine major accident risks which have the potential to result in significant HSE impacts. Examples include loss of well control, offshore vessel collision and dropped objects. The central Risk team developed bowties for these risks, with prevention barriers on cause legs and mitigation barriers on consequence legs. Detailed risk bowties are fundamental to Wells self-verification, adding technical depth to allow more focused verification to be performed when compared with the original bowties, as verification is now conducted using checklists targeting barriers at their component level – defined as critical tasks and equipment. Barriers are underpinned by barrier enablers – underlying supporting systems and processes such as control of work, safe operating limits, inspection and maintenance and others. Checklists are standardized and are available through a single, global digital application. This permits the verifiers, typically wellsite leaders, to conduct meaningful verification conversations, record the resulting actions, track them to closure within the application and gain a better understanding of any cumulative impacts, ineffective barriers and areas to focus on. Self-verification (SV) results are reviewed at rig, region, Wells and Upstream levels. Rigs and regions analyze barrier effectiveness and gaps and implement corrective actions with contractors at the rig or region level. Global insights are collated monthly and presented centrally to Wells leadership. Common themes and valuable learnings are then addressed at functional level, shared across the organization or escalated by the leadership. The self-verification programme at the barrier component level proved to be an effective risk management tool for the company's Wells organization. It helps to continuously identify risks, address gaps and learn from them. Recorded assessments not only provide the Wells organization with barrier performance data, but also highlight opportunities to improve. Leadership uses the results from barrier verification to gain a holistic view of how major accident risks are managed. Programme evolution has also eliminated duplicate reviews, improved clarity of barrier components, and improved sustainability through applying systematic approach, standardization, digitization and procedural discipline.

Almost all types of education are in some sense multidimensional, even if it is difficult to ascribe formal, or passion-driven, experiential, cognitive-behavioral competences closely related to the subject of education to the teaching subject (an individual or a team). From the perspective of the mission of innovative agonology, the most valuable ways, methods, forms and means of educational activities are those whose use (in a session, in a cycle, or as a ‘passion for life’) stimulates as much as possible some aspect of somatic, mental and social health, but also at least one element (component) of survival.From a broader point of view, i.e. the social mission of evidence-based science, the important premise is that although humans are genetically adapted to operate in terrestrial environments, however, they are also active underground, in water, in the air and in space. In each of these environments, one pole of the continuum of survival possibilities accumulates minimal health criteria, while the opposite pole – a long list of factors that mean inevitable death. This diversity of human operating environments and the roles they fulfill within them implies the legitimacy of recommending very complex educational models, some of which require multilevel selection.Apart from individual career paths, swimming and wrestling (even if pursued without the pressure of sports performance) optimally stimulate the somatic dimension of health (hard-respiratory capacity, strength and endurance of the largest muscle groups and flexibility) compared to other sporting activities. The survival dimension is already diverse. For instance, swimming skills increase the chance of survival in an aquatic environment while hand-to-hand combat skills increase the likelihood of effective self-defense in situations of physical aggression. And wrestling is a contact sport (psychophysical activity involving a permanent ‘dialogue of minds and bodies’), so it qualifies as a model that also stimulates the mental dimension of health. Moreover, in general, also the adepts of other martial arts interact in a peculiar way with the centuries-old heritage of the cultures from which these arts originate (social dimension of health). Unfortunately, the effective and attractive status of educational models based on martial arts is depreciated by the pathology of bloody fights of neo-gladiatorship. These spectacles are promoted and camouflaged in the public sphere precisely under the banner of mixed martial arts (the first part of the phrase ‘mixed’ is only 31.25% of the name).Brazilian capoeira is an example of a multifaceted educational model that combines martial art with music. Although innovative agonology is an appropriate science for formulating justifications at the interface between these two arts (martial art and music), the well-established standards of music education are its competition. These standards include respect for centuries-old traditions and multiculturalism, a commitment to routine with an awareness of the unlimited potential for creating beauty and positive emotions. The coordinating perfectionism of the instrumentalists is also admired. However, a hypothesis is justified: ignoring scientific knowledge (including human motor skills) from areas of activity other than music is the cause of, among other things, interpersonal conflicts (for instance teacher-student) and negative effects encompassing all dimensions of health.
