This article analyzes the phenomenon of utopia as a social alternative in the aspect of its praxeological specificity. Confidence in the idea of the utopian due and despair, justified by dissatisfying real, comprise the existential basis of protest state of mass consciousness. The ideological stimulus to social protest becomes the utopian project that produces a trend to practical development of ideal sociality. Systematic functionality of these praxeological elements of utopia substantiates the goal of determining the specificity of correlation between anti-system protest, socially-constructive project, and practice of social transformation. Anticipatory reflection of reality in utopia reveals the synergetic principle of determination by future, according to which the utopic constructs as trends already exists in the present. Their activation on the level of individual and public consciousness is common for the situation of social entropy and chaos; and socio-utopian ideal manifests as an attractor of protest movement. Faith in its realization is explained by the “Principle of Hope” of Ernest Bloch; while precaution for the risks of “social engineering” is reflected in the ideas of Karl Popper and Karl Mannheim. The conclusion is made on the dual nature of praxeological element of the utopia. The first aspect implies that utopia is an anti-system protest as the denial of real, and simultaneously, it is a socially-systemic project as creation of “better”. The second aspect of dualism means that utopia is a project that transforms public consciousness, and a practice that transforms social being. The presence of direct correlation between the intensity of development of utopian ideas and the level of sociopolitical self-organization is established. The reverse correlation is characteristic for the political ideology. Along with humanistic optimism of the utopia, the author determines the risk of “denying denial”: practical implementation of utopian project formed within the framework of social protest, denies the utopia itself.

Abstract This article explores how factors such as gender and cross-religious communication frame and yield utopian perspectives in Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain's literature and practice as educator and feminist. The article makes the case that Hossain's body of work envisions utopia in complex, many-layered ways. Early in her creative career, as a member of the Muslim youth herself, Hossain created gender-just utopian visions that also embedded cross-religious dialogue and cooperation. She later became an educator, inspiring youth, particularly Muslim girls and young women, with utopian ideas and practices. The article concludes that analyzing Hossain's writing in utopian frames, as well as examining her writing and work through Ruth Levitas's approach to utopia as method, helps to explain Hossain's inclusion of religion and spirituality in her oeuvre.

ABSTRACT Many business graduates regard management consultancy firms as a desirable, even utopian, career destination. Hythloday’s description of the island of Utopia identifies several characteristics that resonate with aspects of the management consulting industry. They include its separation from the rest of humanity, the Utopians’ attitude to acquiring knowledge, their commitment to their way of life, their attitude to work, the governance structure of their state, and their attitude to wealth. These characteristics may be compared and contrasted with management consultancy firms’ elite identities, their knowledge intensity, their use of standardized methods, their cultural commitment to intensive work, the autonomy that they allow their members in their practice, and their commitment to achieving ambitious financial targets. This article uses Thomas More’s Utopia (1516) as an analytical framework for understanding the utopian visions of management consulting that some business graduates form, and for exploring how alternative, perhaps better, visions might be imagined.

Abstract Johann Gottfried Herder’s Briefe zu Beförderung der Humanität are probably the clearest articulation of the utopian intention inherent in his philosophy of history. As a result of the changes in utopian thinking with the beginning of the Enlightenment, this intention aims at humane principles of behavior and life practices instead of an ideal state. At the same time, it urges historical efficacy under the condition of an increasingly skeptical naturalized anthropology. The utopian conditions intended by Herder are therefore no longer presentable in the textual pattern of literary utopia handed down from Thomas More. This possibility, however, is offered by a common convention of philosophical epistolary sequences: the staging of a fictional correspondence allows Herder to present a humane discursive practice that exemplifies the utopian conditions themselves.

This article considers Utopia’s unethical practices alongside The City of God’s understanding of the earthly polity’s relationship to eschatology. In Augustine’s view, within the earthly city every person could potentially become a friend of the heavenly city in time, and the existing political situation must always be rendered partial and incomplete against the telos of eternity. These convictions stand in conspicuous contrast with Utopia. The Utopian system is in important ways founded on institutionalized practices which not only exclude non-Utopians (or ex-Utopians), but also habituate them to vice. Examining Utopia alongside The City of God illuminates how this ethical problem in Utopia is not just a matter of individual practices or institutions, but rather derives from a more fundamental metaphysical and theological outlook. Not only is Utopia invested in a Utopian/non-Utopian distinction; more significantly, this distinction has a tacit eschatological role, since Utopian thinking implies that degradation of one’s capacity for virtue decreases one’s potential to be saved.

Contemporary politics is often said to lack utopias. For prevailing understandings of the practical force of political theory, this looks like cause for celebration. As blueprints to apply to political practice, utopias invariably seem too strong or too weak. Through an immanent critique of political realism, I argue that utopian thought, and political theory generally, is better conceived as supplying an orientation to politics. Realists including Bernard Williams and Raymond Geuss explain how utopian programs like universal human rights poorly orient their adherents to politics, but the realists wrongly conclude that utopias and other ideal theories necessarily disorient us. As I show through an analysis of utopian claims made by Michel Foucault, Malcolm X, and John Rawls, utopias today can effectively disrupt entrenched forms of legitimation, foster new forms of political identity, and reveal new possibilities within existing institutions. Utopias are needed to understand the political choices we face today.

This essay investigates how utopian thinking met with dystopian variations in contemporary Chinese science fiction. The dystopian gaze into the utopian dreams, the alternative histories contending with the utopian narratives, and the heterotopian experiments challenging ideological orthodoxy are the focus of my analysis. Reading the dystopian fiction by Chan Koonchung and science fiction stories and novels by Han Song, Bao Shu and Hao Jingfang etc., I do not intend to illustrate the utopian/ dystopian interventions in the political sense, but rather to explore the vigorous, multifaceted variations of utopia, dystopia, and heterotopia that these authors have created as discursive constructs to suggest alternatives to the utopia/dystopian dualism. Contemporary science fiction authors write back to the usual literary practice taking words as reflections of the world. To these writers, words are worlds.

This essay examines the theoretical and practical implications of performance as a utopian gesture, particularly with regard to postcolonial drama. Analyzing Manjula Padmanabhan's futuristic play, Harvest, as a case study, I argue that ‘utopia’ is a crucial critical concept for postcolonial dramatic practice because it stands for the collision and convergence of aesthetic and political interests, using the body itself as a site for representation and resistance. The play explores the extreme outcome of the international trade in human organs as a metaphor for neocolonialism and the constraints of postcolonial societies rent apart by economic inequalities. In this, it presents a moment of personal moral reckoning as a paradigmatic marker for an entire culture's confrontation with its utopian desires and their consequences. Harvest reflects the utopian impulse of modern drama masked by dystopic expression: it demands a differently imagined and shaped future, even as it chronicles the collapse of utopian visions in absolutist excess.

Abstract This article seeks to analyze the contested conditions of modern and contemporary Chinese utopia, as a political treatise, a literary genre, and a social imaginary. It takes a historical perspective from which to describe the rise of utopia in the late Qing era and ponders the contradictions and confluences of its narrative and intellectual paradigms. It proposes that we engage with “dark consciousness,” an idea that deals with the polemics of crisis and contingency ingrained in Chinese thought, in light of modern Chinese literary sources. The last part turns to the scene of the new millennium, observing the dystopian and heterotopian inclinations in fictional practice as opposed to the utopian aspiration in political discourse.

This project seeks to bring a critical utopian methodology to bear upon the institution of citizenship in the hope of imagining a theoretical formulation that could encourage active, anti-hierarchical, participatory and empowering practices. The critical utopian approach disrupts conventional disciplinary boundaries, and allows theories and practices that would not normally be associated with citizenship to be brought into dialogue with the concept in thought and imagination, as part of a strategic intervention. This produces a perspective that is simultaneously estranging and creative, deconstructive and experimental. The body of the work considers three themes in particular: territory, authority and rights, which are frequently posited as foundational for politics and citizenship, and proceeds to deconstruct their dominant formulations by imagining an infinitely critical utopian ‘outside’. Diverse bodies of theory including post-structuralism, anarchism, post-structural and post-left anarchisms, ecology, critical geography and feminism are drawn upon to articulate critical utopias of space without territory, decision-making without authority and ethics without rights. The project then brings another ‘outside’ into dialogue with the theory: practices in what are termed ‘autonomous utopian communities’; including intentional communities, autonomous social centres, housing co-operatives and eco-villages. The aim of the project is to use a dialogue between critically resistant theories and practices to expose the obscured normative and indeed utopian foundations of many dominant theories of citizenship, and to consider the ethical and practical effects of hegemonic and truth-claiming discourses. The project also posits something different: a contingent and open-ended critical utopian citizenship that favours perspectival multiplicity, process over closure, and contingency over certainty, that can be engaged in by citizens and non-citizens in everyday life.

This research brings together two complimentary enquiries that are discussed alongside one another throughout this thesis. The first enquiry explores drawing as a generative as opposed to a goal oriented process. The difference between the two processes is considered to be an important catalyst that sheds new light on the history of instrumentality in drawing, which recent exhibition platforms like Richard Deacon's 'Abstract Drawing' at the Drawing Room, London, have also reassessed. Generative drawing here is understood as an explorative process that determines an outcome (inside or outside the drawing). Goal oriented drawing is critiqued as a process that is driven by an endpoint or goal, suggesting that drawing itself is a means to an end rather than an activity that shapes that end. These differences are explored in relation to a second enquiry into the utopian philosophy of Ernst Bloch, for whom the critical efficacy of utopia lay in its capacity to function as a generative process, as opposed to a goal oriented one. The utopian impulse is explored here as a parallel lens through which to see drawing as a reflexive enquiry (drawing that both generates and critiques its own process) and to therefore re-view its instrumental role. The thesis begins with a discussion about the generative capacity of tracing to mark the beginning of a gradual separation between a drawn line, its traced source and the autonomous drawings that result. This is summarised as a simultaneously destructive and generative act (the drawing is generated by destroying its source), which is supported by Bloch's comparative use of the trace as a critical means of foresight, which is compared and contrasted with the theories of Derrida, Deleuze and Badiou. Finally this destructive form of drawing that gradually distances itself from its source, is explored in reverse to consider its reconstructive potential. In this context the writing of Walter Benjamin is brought into the foreground and examined in relation to the joint effects of retrospective temporality and future orientation in this drawing enquiry. This drawing research is viewed primarily as a process that is harnessed and theorised through a series of drawn pictures, which are generated by one another and emerge as the conclusive statements of the project. This hopes to shed light on the relationship between drawing and instrumentality and to re-think the role of pre-figuration in drawing, through what Deanna Petherbridge has called its 'future subjunctive tense' (Garner, 2008). The associative exploration of drawing through the utopian impulse reveals a paradoxical feature of the instrumental agency of both drawing and utopia, as it is understood by Bloch, which shows both to function as destructive and generative processes.

This thesis is set in the Western Australian education system and centres on the question of how primary schools can actively foster conditions conducive to creating and sustaining education in and for democracy and human rights. In Australia, as elsewhere, there is a widespread acceptance of the need for democratic education also referred to as civics and citizenship education. The perceived lack of public understanding of democratic principles and practices has, in the last decade, led various Australian governments to commit significant resources ($ 31.6 million) to civics and citizenship education programmes such as Discovering Democracy (DD). This thesis argues that political engagement and civic learning is most effective when schools commit themselves to deliberately embedding a set of democratic educational principles in everyday practices. In contrast to traditional approaches to citizenship education that tend to focus on the operational aspects of representative governments, institutions and history, this thesis argues that education for Democracy and Human Rights (DaHR) can be effectively achieved through the fostering of DaHR in education. In this task the thesis draws on the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The CRC is rooted in a range of basic values about the treatment of children in schools and elsewhere, and encompasses basic rights to which children are entitled. The study empirically investigates through up close observations, interviews and surveys the efficacy of pedagogy for civic and citizenship learning in four schools identified as places of strong democratic practice. This study was able to identify particular commonalities between the four case study schools that were conducive to creating and sustaining democratic principles and practices. These schools, although very different in their composition, were lead by principals who shared the view that children under their care were subjects in the making with increasing rights and responsibilities rather than objects to be manipulated, controlled and protected. The findings suggest that experiencing democracy and human rights in daily school life in a variety of situations and on a number of different levels can effectively contribute to the learning of the meaning and advantages of democratic values such as the rule of law, participatory decision-making and due process. It also concludes that there may be a relationship between parental socio-economic background and the possibilities available for students to engage in effective civic learning and citizenship practices. The relationship between socio-economic background and other structural factors including gender and ethnicity in relation to possibilities of civic learning needs to be investigated in a larger study.

This thesis examines the concept of Etherotopia (which literally translates to 'ethereal place'), by which I define the combination of utopian philosophy with certain ideas of individual perfection such as nirvana. The argument is made that the separation of utopian visions into social utopias and individual ones (states and states of mind) is a false dilemma, since a complete utopian theory should include both. In relation to my own utopian writing and as a transition from the critical to the creative part of this thesis, I examine the question of genre in utopian literature and, following from the view that literary genres are subjective and conventional, I argue that utopian literature doesn‘t need to be labelled as a literary genre but rather that it is utopian philosophy in literary form, and therefore philosophical writing. Having argued for the need of a contemporary Etherotopian theory and having discussed the relationship between utopian writing and genre, I proceed to introducing my portfolio of creative writing, a short story collection with the title Etherotopias, which is a series of diverse utopian/dystopian fictions that in some cases expand on the concept of Etherotopia either philosophically or aesthetically, while in other cases provide literary responses to conflicting utopian theories popular in contemporary society and its consumer culture. The collection is therefore a series of arguments and criticisms in the form of stories that range from political and satirical to religious and existential and address social issues as well as utopian and dystopian states of mind.

On the fringes of the digital revolution, unknown to the general public, volunteers have been administering and providing non-profit Internet services for thirty years. These associations, some of them very old, are trying to keep alive the organisational utopia that dates back to the beginnings of the network and the values associated with it. But what is it that still drives volunteers to defend this lost cause? What function does their commitment fulfil? And how does it fit into the evolution of the internet over the last thirty years? This thesis offers a sociological analysis of the “utopian practice” and the conditions of its persistence, based on a comparative survey between France and Germany combining ethnography and archival work. Using the perspective of configuration analysis borrowed from Norbert Elias, we will explain how the conservative and adaptive capacity of this associative movement responds to the relative frustrations of those disappointed by the digital revolution, by crossing structural, organisational and individual levels of analysis. The thesis begins by tracing the sociogenesis of the associative Internet in the 1990s, between pioneering practices, economic marginalisation and discreet insertion into local public connection policies. It was in the 2000s that associative activity became ‘utopian’, through the actions of ‘utopian entrepreneurs’, on the fringes of the then emerging activism in defence of digital rights and freedoms. Secondly, the thesis shows, from an organisational point of view, how Internet associations were shaped from the inside by successive waves of volunteers who, according to their own socialisation on the Internet, invested in a sense of the cause and a corresponding organisational model. Finally, on an individual level, thanks to a utopian division of labour that enabled people to practise their profession in a different way, we will explain how involvement in these associations was rewarded for pioneers and later volunteers alike. As a link between the alternative socialisations that make up the relationship to learning, the desire for autonomy, freedom and security, the associations create the conditions for an individual utopia for those who manage to join them, compensating for the power relationships they experience at work. So, while organising the preservation of pre-market practices of collaboration between peers, the associative internet offers its followers avenues of transformation, particularly regarding the individual and collective relationship to activity. The comparison enables us to grasp the contours of a European Internet utopia and what the diversity of utopian practices owes to national power structures, particularly regarding regulation of the telecommunications market. Beyond a normative perspective that sees utopia in society as a factor for unambiguous change, or as a system of ideas opposing conservative fictions and geared towards a better society, this thesis aims to contribute to a sociological understanding of utopian phenomena based on an analysis of their logical practices

Recent discourses on participatory architectural practices have argued that despite their claims of a transformative agenda, these practices are typically coopted by power, utilised to manipulate and placate opposition, and prevent rather than enable progressive change. Elsewhere so-called critical practices of architecture have been judged equally ineffective at creating substantive change, unable to engage in the world as it is and instead retreating into abstract, speculative and utopian projects. Placing the discourses together it would appear that while participatory forms of architecture have difficulty maintaining criticality towards the relational power structures through which they operate, critical forms of architecture have somewhat reciprocal limitations participating in reality. To seek a possible means to navigate the apparent divergence between participation and criticality in architecture this thesis returns to a notion developed by one of the leading early exponents of participation. In 1971 the Italian architect, urbanist, writer and educator, Giancarlo De Carlo gave a lecture in Melbourne entitled An Architecture of Participation in which he introduced the concept of the ‘realistic Utopia’. Through the course of the thesis a layered definition of the realistic utopia is developed. This is done first through a close reading of De Carlo’s principle theoretical works on participation and by mapping the evolution and transformation of the core ideas through his work and the influential contexts in which he was operating. The changes in social, economic and political contexts which have occurred since De Carlo used the term are outlined, with reference to the accompanying discourses on participation and criticality in architecture, to examine the continued relevance and required amendments to the realistic utopia as a conceptual tool for contemporary practices. The thesis argues that the realistic utopia draws together a number of overlooked aspects of De Carlo’s architectural theorisation which explicitly sought a means for architecture to operate critically. The realistic utopia is understood as a means to stimulate social change through the practice of architecture, albeit indirectly, through an iterative and reticulating process of producing images of spatial alternatives in a dialectic relationship with its ‘public’. The thesis argues that the realistic utopia offers a distinct conception of the interaction between architectural objects, the processes by which they are formed and the societal structures which frame this formation. It shows that beyond being a means to understand the multi-directional relationship between architecture and society, the realistic utopia offers a conceptual tool to aid action within the complex set of forces at work in this relationship. In this way, it locates the realistic utopia as something of importance beyond an assessment of the work of De Carlo, or even the broader project of participation he fostered, and is here opened up for renewed use by practitioners today.

This book examines the active role of urban citizens in constructing alternative urban spaces as tangible resistance towards capitalist production of urban spaces that continue to encroach various neighborhoods, lanes, commons, public land and other spaces of community life and livelihoods. The collection of narratives presented here brings together research from ten different Asian cities and re-theorises the city from the perspective of ordinary people facing moments of crisis, contestations, and cooperative quests to create alternative spaces to those being produced under prevailing urban processes. The chapters accent the exercise of human agency through daily practices in the production of urban space and the intention is not one of creating a romantic or utopian vision of what a city "by and for the people" ought to be. Rather, it is to place people in the centre as mediators of city-making with discontents about current conditions and desires for a better life.

AbstractThis chapter shows how reading a utopia from the perspective of social knowledge production can furnish new understanding of the practice of private conversation in early modern Europe in “Talking Privately in Utopia: Ideals of Silence and Dissimulation in Smeeks’ Krinke Kesmes (1708)”. Taking the example of Hendrik Smeeks’ Description of the Mighty Kingdom of Krinke Kesmes, the chapter explores how dissimulation and silence became tools of privacy within utopian writing. Benison’s findings on dissimulation as a virtue in the Kesmian society challenge the standard focus on the ethic of public transparency governing early modern utopias, as in Thomas More’s depiction of Utopia’s total lack of privacy.

This chapter explores the proposition that in designated spaces utopian principles may be introduced temporarily or for longer, with the aim of promoting more intensive sociability than that usually prevailing in the wider society. It points out how the proposition demonstrates the possibility of viable alternative ways of living in which equality, solidarity, communal identity, and belongingness are prioritised as a kind of halfway house to utopia. It also looks at festivals, some of which are overtly defined by utopian principles. The chapter talks about folk memory or myth of the Golden Age that was embodied in various European festivals. Originating in religious ceremonies and the seasonal and agricultural calendar, such celebrations sometimes possess a sense of sacred time and space.

The article states that the universal Marxist law of socio-economic formations’ changing is absolutely significant and relevant in the sphere of modern philosophical knowledge. However, the basic idea of K. Marx about the communist formation turns out to be utopian. The article shows that utopias and antiutopias are dialectically interrelated - the line between them can be easily overcome. Any attempt to put a utopia into practice (for example, a communist one) discriminates against opposing "human factor", and the utopia transforms into an anti-utopia.

In the context of the modern super-technological, technofetishist paradigm, the category of corporeality is fundamentally transformed, and the phenomenon of the body is increasingly conceptualised and interpreted through notions of formless, structureless formations that exist as a configuration of surfaces (screen body, antibody, body without organs, zero body, body without space). In the context of a technologised, digital environment, with the development and spread of transhumanist ideas, a number of philosophical problems become particularly relevant, among them going beyond the limits of the human, the body's detachment from its own topography, and the elusiveness of subjectivity. This article attempts to describe these metamorphoses on the example of Julia Ducournau's film "Titan", based on the concept of utopianisation of the body proposed by Michel Foucault in 1966 as part of the radio programme "French Culture".

The meaning of utopia is a place of ideal perfection. The expression is referred to a combination of unorthodox ideas, fantasies and striving to improve the liveability by learning from the best practice, with an ultimate goal of a new, ideally imagined one. This paper gives an overview of the utopian ideals of the 19th and 20th centuries, known in the literature as successful, or on the contrary, unsuccessful. Accenting the urbanism of experimental cities and their influence on architectural concepts of the 21st century, we can set a parallel between today practice and experience of the past. The question, whether the 20th century futurists were far beyond their time or whether today is possible to realize those visions, cannot be answered with certainty. But the determination to realize the concept of the city of tomorrow is as smart, sustainable and reactive city.

The article is devoted to the problem of the social state as one of the fundamental constitutional principles of the state structure of modern developed countries. The course of historical development of philosophical and legal thought on this problem is considered. The idea of a close connection between the concept of the social state and the ideas of utopian socialism of Thomas More and Henri Saint-Simon is put forward. Liberals also made a significant contribution to the development of the idea of the social state, they argued that the ratio of equality and freedom is a key problem for the classical liberal doctrine. It is concluded that the emergence of the theory of the social state for objective reasons was inevitable, since it is due to the historical development of society.

This paper is a theoretical approach to utopian urbanism and internal colonization projects developed in Spain in the late nineteenth century, by both governmental and employer bodies. The research aims at reviewing the urban utopias and identifying alternatives and proposals for land planning and coordination between areas of production and reproduction, its spaces modeler principle, and structures of power. In order to assess the degree of practical application of utopian approaches, it explores, as case studies, some colonization experiences, in its industrial, agricultural and mining varieties

In this paper, I analyse the representation of China in the twentieth – century in the prose and poetry of two modernist authors through the textual tensions among utopia/ dystopia/hete-rotopia, specifically Franz Kafka’s ‘The Great Wall of China’ (1917) and Ezra Pound’s The Cantos (1885 – 1972) and Cathay (1915). Drawing on Foucault’s concept of heterotopia as a way of thinking about space in real and imaginary terms, as well as its political imp-lications, I consider the two writers to translate China into uto-pias/heterotopias for their own identity formation. This approach allows my paper to make observations about the poetics of each author, the modernist reception of China in terms of cultural trans-lation, and the translatability of Chinese thought in terms of inter-mediality. This paper identifies the atemporality in both authors’ approach to China, revealing the dispassionate identification of Chi-nese and Jewish culture in Kafka versus the subjective identification of real and imaginary China in Pound. I analyse the gaps between the superimposed factual plane and imagination, in order to exa-mine how they translate, accept Chinese culture and philosophy in the horizon and crisis of modernity, how they speak of ‘China’ (tex-tual China) for the aim of mirroring the self, how Chinese phi-losophy is transplanted as medicine (Pound) for the modern Euro-pean spirit. Drawing on a broad range of research, this paper syn-thesises and brings into dialogue scholarship on hermeneutics, aes-thetics, and cultural studies in several different languages. I propose to reinvigorate utopia’s inherently critical nature as critical utopias, heterotopia and meta – utopia being involved as emanations. The synthesising remarks that compare Kafka with Pound will show that they are both conducting comparative studies, transcultural interpretations; they both reject unifying views of identity, and both accept Chinese poetics, philosophy in a formal and spiritual sense.

The article covers ideas of public life in ancient Greek philosophy having given rise to discussion on the necessity of separation and rapprochement of public and private spheres. This study rests upon the analysis of ‘publicness’ and ‘privacy’ in the philosophical conceptions of such authors as J. Habermas who deems ‘publicness’ as communication, and H. Arendt who refers to ‘publicness’ as the polis-based worldview. Plato’s dialogue ‘The State’, which can be deemed as the first-ever example of a utopian text, provides us with the most detailed and consistent instance of criticism of the private sphere, the necessity to merge it into public life to create society. Only in this way could society become a model of an ideal polis leading to the common good. The utopism of Plato’s pattern determines characteristics of the entire utopian genre arising from the idea of the individual merging with the state, and the private sphere merging into the public sphere. Plato’s ideal polis is contrasted with the concepts of the state formed by Modern Age liberal thought, which have largely determined modern views on the division of these spheres, leading to a revision of the utopian projects and a change in the relationship between the private and the public therein. A comparison of various utopian texts results in finding out that the utopian idea of the refusal of the private sphere of life in favour of serving the common good contradicts the modern ideal of freedom, which is the reason for its criticism and for the increasing number of texts with an anti-utopian character.

The periodization of fine and applied art after the industrial revolution and the response of alienated artists to industrial kitsch testifies to the utility and purpose of art—the artistic and social avantgardes and the crown of all their endeavors in the heroic period. From art and craft pastiche, to utopian efforts to reform society through design, a rich linear syntagm was structured that intrigued and burdened the creatives from this region, who sought to introduce the land of peasants and barbarogens into the currents of industrial and social progress, culture and art. One of those individuals, in whom Morris and Marinetti, Van Doesburg and Itten, Gropius and Meyer, Vassarelli and Dibiffe... Müller-Brockman and Rand conflicted, tirelessly pursued the affirmation and institutionalization of applied art and design through pedagogical, editorial, theoretical and research work, as well as visual and graphic practice. Miodrag Miša Nedeljković was a modernist with a small 'm', artist and designer, theoretician and practitioner, who nomadically moved through the currents of modern and postmodern fine and applied art and design with renaissance curiosity, driven by intrigue and logic, was primarily concerned with the emergence and establishment of circumstances, and environmental issues.

The starting point of the author’s contribution is her research and knowledge of contact areas that are characterised by historical circumstances and social peculiarities – the basis for the cross-linguistic and intercultural coexistence of the people who inhabit them. In this complexity of social conditions, the cultural and political value of languages is not a static feature for the author, but an achievement of historically and socially rooted practises of speakers, including discursive practises that give languages recognisable sign values and allow them to circulate in recognisable trajectories. Innovative solutions for language learning and use are necessary and required to successfully preserve multilingualism and linguistic diversity in these areas and to create intercultural understanding in time and space. They should develop composite abilities and skills that, in addition to multilingualism itself, promote critical and humanistic thinking, tolerance and heuristic curiosity, which are essential for survival in a global world. Globalisation, the technological revolution and, as a result, artificial intelligence have brought about new approaches to language teaching in the field of foreign and other language learning, based above all on the fact that it is no longer the place and tools of learning that are important, but the shortest path to knowledge. It is becoming increasingly important that curricula and teaching resources to enable us to learn flexibly, from anywhere, at any time and in any way. A comprehensive reflection on new approaches to educational and didactic culture that enables effective cross-linguistic and intercultural communication in both analogue and digital environments, opens the way to strategies that reject the utopian ideas of unnecessary living contact with language, but put into practice the laws of interpersonal communication, prevent the degradation of the diversity of cultures and enable the preservation of the humanist paradigm of our civilisation.
