The health of democratic public spheres is challenged by the circulation of falsehoods. These epistemic problems are connected to social media and they raise a classic problem of how to understand the role of technology in political developments. We discuss three sets of technological affordances of social media that facilitate the spread of false beliefs: obscuring the provenance of information, facilitating deception about authorship, and providing for manipulation of social signals. We argue that these do not make social media a “cause” of problems with falsehoods, but explanations of epistemic problems should account for social media to understand the timing and widespread occurrence of epistemic problems. We argue that “the marketplace of ideas” cannot be adequate as a remedy for these problems, which require epistemic editing by the press.

The rps12 gene transcripts encoding mitochondrial ribosomal protein S12 are partially edited in petunia mitochondria. Different petunia lines were found vary in the extent of rps12 transcript editing. To test whether multiple forms of RPS12 proteins are produced in petunia mitochondria as a result of partial editing, we probed mitochondrial proteins with specific antibodies against edited and unedited forms of a 13-amino-acid RPS12 peptide spanning two amino acids affected by RNA editing. Both antibodies reacted with mitochondrial proteins at the expected size for RPS12 proteins. The amounts of unedited RPS12 protein in different petunia lines correlate with the abundance of unedited transcripts in these plants. Unedited rps12 translation products are also detected in other plant species, indicating that polymorphism in mitochondrial rps12 expression is widespread. Moreover, we show that RPS12 proteins recognized by both edited-specific and unedited-specific antibodies are present in a petunia mitochondrial ribosome fraction. These results demonstrate that partially edited transcripts can be translated and that the protein product can accumulate to detectable levels. Therefore, genes exhibiting incompletely edited transcripts can encode more than one gene product in plant mitochondria.

Background: Falcotentorial meningiomas are pineal region meningiomas that arise from the dura of the tentorium cerebelli and posterior part of the falx. These tumors are commonly supplied by branches of the internal carotid artery such as the meningohypophyseal trunk, inferolateral trunk, and anterior choroidal artery. Less frequently, branches of the ophthalmic artery, vertebral artery, or external carotid artery are also involved. Based on neuroimaging studies, falcotentorial meningiomas may be classified as anterior, superior, inferior, and posterior types. Here, we present an unedited microsurgical resection of a superior falcotentorial meningioma. Case Description: The patient with a meningioma of the posterior inferior falx and a minimal extension to the tentorium underwent sitting praying position and a right occipital interhemispheric approach. Strong retraction of the dura followed a superior sagittal sinus based opening. Careful microsurgical access between the medial surface of the occipital lobe and the falx toward the splenium of corpus callosum allowed us to recognize the lesion. Thus, a cottonoid placed over the cerebral surface avoiding direct contact with the bipolar forceps, and the constant separation of the falx cerebri with the aspiration tube along the access developed a proper surgical route preventing any cortical lesion. Along the approach, cerebrospinal fluid was continuously released from the pericallosal cistern as well. Once well recognized the meningioma, we proceeded with the internal decompression of the lesion using a thumb regulated suction tube and bipolar forceps. Tissue samples from the tumor were taken for the histological diagnosis, and under conventional microsurgical technique, the meningioma was completely removed by piecemeal technique. A small lateral tear on the falx required hemostatic reparation with Tachosil. Water dissection provided us a clear cleavage plane for the microsurgical dissection of the tumor and maintained a clean operative field along the procedure. Occipital arteries running over the lateral surface of the meningioma were carefully dissected and isolated from the lesion, while the deep venous system did not achieve any contact with the tumor. After the ipsilateral component of the meningioma was resected, we intent are dissecting the contralateral segments of the tumor with a curved dissector. At the last stage of the surgery, small incision at a tumor-free segment of the falx allowed us to remove the falcotentorial attachment of the lesion. Under high microscopic magnification, the remaining minimal portion of meningioma extending under the tentorium was coagulated. After complete microsurgical removal of the meningioma, careful homeostasis based on electrocoagulation surgical and Tachosil was achieved. Finally, we performed a surgical wound closure under standard technique. Conclusion: This unedited video offers all detailed aspects for an efficient and safe falcotentorial meningioma microneurosurgery. Whole-brain four-dimensional computed tomography angiography (W4D-CTA) using a 320-row area detector CT (320r-ADCT) has been applied before thrombectomy. Endovascular physicians require images with high interrater reliability (IRR) for making appropriate decisions. However, the 320r-ADCT gantry cannot be tilted, and the patient’s head position influences the anteroposterior (AP)-view W4D-CTA images. This study aimed to determine which W4D-CTA images are appropriate pre-thrombectomy, whether the unedited AP view or cut-out Towne view. This study included the W4D-CTA images of acute stroke patients with occlusion of the internal carotid artery or the middle cerebral artery (MCA) from April to July 2021. Images produced by 320r-ADCT were transferred to a workstation. Unedited AP-view images were automatically generated. Towne-view images were cut out for this study. Collateral status was evaluated as poor, intermediate, or good based on the visualization of the MCA peripheral branches. In addition, the IRR was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) (2,1). Fifteen patients were analyzed. In the unedited AP-view and cut-out Towne-view W4D-CTA images, the ICC (2,1) were 0.147 and 0.796, respectively. Cut-out Towne-view W4D-CTA images with substantial IRR are superior to the unedited AP-view images for assessing the anterior intracranial collateral status.

Abstract Introduction Previous studies have shown automatic scoring of portable level 3 sleep study provides similar findings when compared to polysomnography (PSG), establishing home sleep apnea tests (HSAT) as an adequate screening tool for OSA. Accuracy of level 3 studies with Nox T3 portable sleep studies (Noxturna Inc., Atlanta GA) may improve with manual editing to include total sleep time (TST). No other studies have compared unedited versus manually edited HSAT with level 1 in-lab PSG performed simultaneously. This study evaluates if added manual editing optimizes the diagnostic accuracy of HSAT in classifying the severity of OSA, using both AASM and CMS criteria. Methods Secondary analysis of six-center (n=206) sleep apnea diagnostic comparative effectiveness trial. Participants underwent simultaneous administration of level 1 PSG (Philips Alice 6 LDx Diagnostic Sleep system) and Nox T3 portable sleep study with centralized scoring using AASM and CMS criteria. All HSAT were autoscored and then edited by the registered polysomnographic technician. Editing entailed establishing start and stop recording times based on accompanying actigraphy data (reduction in movement) in the portable device and elimination of recording artifact. Results Using AASM criteria, poor sensitivity OSA (AHI≥5) was observed using unedited vs PSG (p=.01) compared to manually edited HSAT vs. PSG (p=.06). No statistically significant difference was observed using AHI≥15 or via categorization across four levels of OSA (none, mild, moderate, or severe). In contrast, CMS criteria comparisons to PSG showed poor specificity of OSA (AHI≥5) for unedited (p=.003) compared to edited (p=.372) HSAT studies. As expected, total sleep time was overestimated using T3 actigraphy devices compared to the criterion standard across both edited and unedited studies (p=.001, .001 respectively). Conclusion Improvements in sensitivity and specificity of OSA were noted using edited versus unedited T3 HSAT when compared to Level 1 PSG using both AASM and CMS criteria. Background: Vein of Galen arteriovenous malformations (VGAVMs) are vascular malformations of the pineal region between a persistent embryological median prosencephalic vein of Markowski and the arterial choroidal system by a direct (mural type) or indirect (choroidal type) communication. Angiographic evaluation of VGAVMs usually describes a limbic arch between the anterior and posterior cerebral arteries throughout a pericallosal artery, and the classic “ε” shape configuration of the thalamostriate veins drainage into a subtemporal or a lateral mesencephalic vein due to the underdevelopment of the straight sinus, sigmoid sinus, and jugular bulbs. Moreover, falcine dural channels join the pouch of the malformation with the posterior third of the superior sagittal sinus and less frequently with the cavernous sinus, inferior petrosal sinus, and facial veins. At present, endovascular therapy is the standard management for these lesions. However, under failure of endovascular procedures such in this case, microsurgical management of VGAVMs under an experienced neurosurgical team might be paramount. Case Description: The patient with a choroidal type VGAVM and multiple failed endovascular procedures underwent sitting praying position and midline supracerebellar infratentorial approach. Strong retraction with stitches and proper hemostasis of a highly vascular dura was achieved after transverse sinus-based opening. Accurate microsurgical dissection between the superior cerebellar surface and the tentorium allowed a supracerebellar approach over the vermis and along the midline recognizing the venous pouch of the VGAVM instead of the absent straight sinus. Water dissection allowed us to differentiate the cleavage plane between the VGAVM and surrounding structures maintaining an impeccable surgical field as well. Under high microscopic magnification, arterial feeders of the malformation coming from the posterior cerebral artery were recognized. Intraoperative angiography and reevaluation of the preoperative imaging helped us to confirm a safety approach before coagulation and cut those vascular feeders. Throughout an open-close and short bursts bipolar coagulation techniques preventing attachment of conventional bipolar tips within the vascular structure and without permanent use of water irrigation, the vessels were carefully dissected, coagulated, and sectioned. Along with our experience, we believe that this standard coagulation technique applied in all vascular malformation surgeries is safe and effective. A remaining small plexiform malformation associated with the vein of Galen malformation was coagulated and isolated. A new intraoperative angiography determined complete microsurgical occlusion of the VGAVM. Careful homeostasis based on electrocoagulation and surgical was achieved. Finally, we performed a microsurgical wound closure as a conventional technique in Helsinki neurosurgery. Conclusion: This unedited video offers all detailed aspects that a neurosurgeon as the senior author JH considers essential when performing an efficient and safe surgery for a VGAVM. This thesis is a reading of Raymond Carver’s edited and unedited writing with respect to unsymbolised mental spaces. Carver’s edited writing is characterized by clipped sentences and solid silences and is often defined as ‘minimalist’. His unedited writing is more garrulous and sprawling, which has led critics to label it ‘realist’. I consider how these different forms of language present different kinds of resistances to clear meaning. I read these resistances in terms of different mentally unsymbolised spaces – unconscious spaces that resist symbolisation. In doing so, I consider the psychoanalytic thought of Lacan, along with Laplanche and Green, as well as Blanchot and Attridge’s writing on literary otherness. In the curt sentences juxtaposed with hard silences of Carver’s edited, so- called minimalist writing, I consider how highly fixed meanings are split from radically unsymbolised spaces. Here I find a theoretical echo in my reading of Lacan’s originary linguistic castration – his account of the first traumatic linguistic cut that is inflicted on the young infant, splitting the infant between a pre-linguistic state and a state of meaning. I suggest that Carver’s edited, minimalist language stages this original cutting into being. His language performs the very way in which everyday language inflicts a certain cut and his writing takes this cut to an extreme. In the more sprawling so-called ‘realist’ language of the unedited Carver, the unsymbolised and meaning entwine rather than split. Bringing together Carver, Lacan, and Blanchot, in the unedited realist prose I conceive unsymbolised spaces as held, sheltered, even quietly hidden but not annulled by linguistic meaning. Carver’s unedited writing stages psychical otherness as quietly imbricated in the texture of language, fostering a more bodily expression of the unsymbolised.

This thesis is an attempt to establish an authoritative text for a previously unedited anonymous Old English homily, with a parallel re-creation of a text for the probable source. The untitled homily is probably late tenth or early eleventh century, copied in the late twelfth century into a collection of Aelfrician sermons. It is a translation of a lost version of a Latin Sermon of Pseudo-Isidore, based in turn on three sermons of Pseudo-Augustine Sources and analogues are traced and discussed. A fairly literal translation into Modern English is included. This homily may be useful to lexicographers for several early appearances of Middle English words and a few unusual Old English spellings or compounds.

The availability of low-cost and high-quality wearable cameras combined with the unlimited storage capacity of video-sharing websites have evoked a growing interest in First-Person Videos. Such videos are usually composed of long-running unedited streams captured by a device attached to the user body, which makes them tedious and visually unpleasant to watch. Consequently, it raises the need to provide quick access to the information therein. We propose a Sparse Coding based methodology to fast-forward First-Person Videos adaptively. Experimental evaluations show that the shorter version video resulting from the proposed method is more stable and retain more semantic information than the state-of-the-art. Compsa is the name of the ancient town of Conza della Campania, in Irpinia, which as a result of the 1980 earthquake was completely destroyed. An extensive study over the entire urban area founded on the dialogue between the examples of the restoration project and the potential to represent it through innovative, instrumental research-projects has revealed not only unedited historical data which have enriched our knowledge regarding the ite, but also significant traces to elaborate the proposed project to re-evaluate such a unique archaeological park have been revealed. The extreme complexity of the theme, which involves the urban and panoramic dimensions as well as the architectural one includes also the need for the re-evaluation of the archaeological park and the extraordinary presence of ancient evidence and remains in a town which is made up of rubble.

Research indicates that deceitful videos tend to spread rapidly online and influence people’s opinions and ideas. Because of this, video misinformation via deepfake video manipulation poses a significant online threat. This study aims to discover what factors can influence viewers’ capability of distinguishing deepfake videos from genuine video footage. This work focuses on exploring deepfake videos’ potential use for deception and misinformation by exploring people’s ability to determine whether videos are deepfakes in a survey consisting of deepfake videos and original unedited videos. The participants viewed a set of four videos and were asked to judge whether the videos shown were deepfakes or originals. The survey varied the familiarity that the viewers had with the subjects of the videos. Also, the number of videos shown at one time was manipulated. This survey showed that familiarity of subjects has a statistically significant impact on how well people can determine a deepfake. Notably, however, almost two thirds of study participants (102 out of 154, or 66.23%) were unable to correctly identify a sequence of just four videos as either genuine or deepfake. Overall, the study provides insights into possible methods for countering disinformation and deception resulting from the misuse of deepfakes.

Even if we know how to spell, we often see words misspelled by other people — especially nowadays when we constantly read unedited texts on social media and in personal messages. In this paper, we present two experiments showing that the incidence of orthographic errors reduces the quality of lexical representations in the mental lexicon—even if one knows how to spell a word, repeated exposure to incorrect spellings blurs its orthographical representation and weakens the connection between form and meaning. As a result, it is more difficult to judge whether the word is spelled correctly, and — more surprisingly — it takes more time to read the word even when there are no errors. We show that when all other factors are balanced the effect of misspellings is more pronounced for the words with lower frequency. We compare our results with the only previous study addressing the problem of misspellings’ influence on the processing of correctly spelled words — it was conducted on the English data. It may be interesting to explore this issue in a cross-linguistic perspective. In this study, we turn to Russian, which differs from English by a more transparent orthography. Much larger corpora of unedited texts are available for English than for Russian, but, using a different way to estimate the incidence of misspellings, we obtained similar results and could also make some novel generalizations. In Experiment 1 we selected 44 words that are frequently misspelled and presented in two conditions (with or without spelling errors) and were distributed across two experimental lists. For every word, participants were asked to determine whether it is spelled correctly or not. The frequency of the word and the relative frequency of its misspelled occurrences significantly influenced the number of incorrect responses: not only it takes longer to read frequently misspelled words, it is also more difficult to decide whether they are spelled correctly. In Experiment 2 we selected 30 words from the materials of Experiment 1 and for every selected word, we found a pair that is matched for length and frequency, but is rarely misspelled due to its orthographic transparency. We used a lexical decision task, presenting these 60 words in the correct spelling, as well as 60 nonwords. We used LMMs for statistics. Firstly, the word type factor was significant: it takes more time to recognize a frequently misspelled word, which replicates the results obtained for English. Secondly, the interaction between the word type factor and the frequency factor was significant: the effect of misspellings was more pronounced for the words of lower frequency. We can conclude that high frequency words have more robust representations that resist blurring more efficiently than low frequency ones. Finally, we conducted a separate analysis showing that the number of incorrect responses in Experiment 1 correlates with RTs in Experiment 2. Thus, whether we consciously try to find an error or simply read words orthographic representations blurred due to exposure to frequent misspellings make the task more difficult.

Such videos are usually composed of long-running unedited streams captured by a device attached to the user body, which makes them tedious and visually unpleasant to watch. Consequently, there is a rise in the need to provide quick access to the information therein. To address this need, efforts have been applied to the development of techniques such as Hyperlapse and Semantic Hyperlapse, which aims to create visually pleasant shorter videos and emphasize semantic portions of the video, respectively. The state-of-the-art Semantic Hyperlapse method SSFF, negligees the level of importance of the relevant information, by only evaluating if it is significant or not. Other limitations of SSFF are the number of input parameters, the scalability in the number of visual features to describe the frames, and the abrupt change in the speed-up rate of consecutive video segments. In this dissertation, we propose a parameter-free Sparse Coding based methodology to adaptively fast-forward First-Person Videos, that emphasize the semantic portions applying a multi-importance approach. Experimental evaluations show that the proposed method creates shorter version video retaining more semantic information, with fewer abrupt transitions of speed-up rates, and more stable final videos than the output of SSFF. Aim/Purpose: To update a 2010 study that recommended “rules of thumb” for more effective use of PowerPoint in the post-secondary business classroom. The current study expanded the focus to include the business classroom in India as well as the US and examined possible shifts in student perception of the utility of PowerPoint among Generations Y and Z. Background: The study examined students’ perception of the learning utility of PowerPoint in post-secondary business classrooms in the US and India and the relationship of the use of PowerPoint to course ratings. Methodology: Surveys were distributed in post-secondary business classrooms in India and the US in 2018 and early 2019, resulting in 92 completions from India and 127 from the US. Separately 50 student course evaluations from the same US college were compared to the use of slides as well as to their conformance to the “rules of thumb” for effectiveness established earlier and other measures of quality. Contribution: These results show how PowerPoint is viewed by post-secondary business students in India and the US and its perceived utility as a learning tool for Generations Y and Z. Findings: Most post-secondary business students (80%) found PowerPoint an effective learning tool, but only 21% of the business classes examined used it. US students were more positive than Indian ones, who were more likely to say PowerPoint is overused. There was no difference in student course evaluations between those that had slides and those that did not. However, most of the slide decks examined did not follow the “rules of thumb,” exhibiting a much greater number of words per slide. Generations Y and Z gave high ratings to slides that incorporated audiovisuals, mixed media, and special effects and said they learned more when they were the ones who created the slides. However, most students did not rate themselves as competent in creation of PowerPoint slides. Recommendations for Practitioners: (1) Faculty should consider students’ positive reception of PowerPoint, their preference for adaptive, interactive learning that builds on strong multimedia elements while creating instructional materials. (2) Faculty should receive prescriptive design instruction for incorporating PowerPoint best practices to cut back on their self-reported high time spent on slide creation and student-reported low technical competency in faculty instruction. (3) Publishers should concentrate on slide design and innovativeness along with content coverage to serve faculty needs. (4) Business curricula should take into account generational as well as cultural differences in learning preferences. (5) To address the students’ conflation of personal social media prowess with superior technology or communication skills in the professional context, Business curricula should incorporate learning outcomes related to professional use of technology tools such as PowerPoint. Recommendations for Researchers: There is still utility in old-fashioned paper questionnaires to assess what impacts student learning. There is also merit in comparing student course evaluations with various in-classroom treatments. Impact on Society: PowerPoint may be underused in the post-secondary business classroom, but this paper raises questions about the value of unedited use of the very dense slides provided by publishers as effective learning tools in the post-secondary business classroom. Future Research: Future research can be focused on the use of PowerPoint slides in the business classroom in other countries and cultures, as only the US and India were examined. Further examination needs to be made of the relationship between extensive and unedited use of publisher-provided slides and the reporting of the staggering statistics that most students are not now buying textbooks. Finally, this study did not touch on gender or socio-economic differences in the student demographics, which might open further avenues for investigation.

This US Army Corps of Engineers, Regional Sediment Management, technical note describes a geodatabase of federal coastal and inland navigation projects developed to determine the extent to which RSM goals have been implemented across the USACE at the project and district levels. The effort 1) quantified the volume of sediment dredged from federal navigation channels by both contract and USACE-owned dredges and 2) identified the placement type and whether sediment was placed beneficially. The majority of the dredging data used to populate the geodatabase were based on the USACE Dredging Information System DIS database, but when available, the geodatabase was expanded to include more detailed USACE district-specific data that were not included in the DIS database. Two datasets were developed in this study: the National Dataset and the District-Specific and Quality-Checked Dataset. The National Dataset is based on statistics extracted from the combined DIS Contract and Government Plant data. This database is a largely unedited database that combined two available USACE datasets. Due to varying degrees of data completeness in these two datasets, this study undertook a data refinement process to improve the information. This was done through interviews with the districts, literature search, and the inclusion of additional district-specific data provided by individual districts that often represent more detailed information on dredging activities. The District-Specific and Quality-Checked Database represents a customized database generated by this study. An interactive web-based tool was developed that accesses both datasets and displays them on a national map that can be viewed at the district or project scale.
