Maaloula is a Christian village with exceptional architecture and location. It has a world reputation due to its dialect; people converse and write in the Aramaic language. It is one of the Qalamoun's three villages with Bakhaa and Jabaden. Consequently, the village has attracted linguists worldwide; moreover, it has been the goal of many travellers since the 19th century. Like many of the traditional sites, Maaloula was affected by modern lifestyles and changing needs. These factors altered the village's architecture and construction techniques. This paper highlights the main characteristics that have been identified by Maaloula's situation. The article will cover various traditional features and the main typology of houses that are starting to disappear. Finally, the difficulties that Maaloula faced before, during and after the Syrian crisis.

In the conservation and development of traditional villages, it is vital to delineate reasonable village boundaries. At present, China’s traditional village boundaries are mainly defined through the boundaries of village construction land in its land policy. This approach ignores the "natural" state of traditional village boundaries and does not truly reflect villagers’ use of their villages. Using the constituent line segments of traditional village boundaries as parameters, we delineate a series of traditional village boundaries and constructed an assessment system for traditional village boundaries in terms of the convenience of villagers’ activities and their habitual use of village space. We used the delineation of the boundary of Haishangqiao village in the Yiluo River Basin in China as an example to test the effectiveness of the traditional village boundary delineation method and assessment system. The results show the following: (1) The virtual line segments connecting the buildings on the traditional village boundary are the main factors affecting the delineation of the traditional village boundary. (2) The amplitude of vibration and the global deviation of traditional village boundaries are the main influencing factors of complexity. (3) The complexity of traditional village boundaries is negatively correlated with the convenience of villagers’ activities. (4) The complexity of traditional village boundaries is negatively correlated with the emptiness of the internal space of traditional villages. The results of this study can provide practical reference values for scholars of rural planning, rural construction, rural conservation, rural management, and rural research.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the justification for the involvement of Traditional Villages in the implementation of the prevention and control of the Covid 19 Pandemic in Yang Api Village and Peninjoan Village. The Bali Provincial Government synergizes activities to prevent the transmission of the Corona Virus (Covid-19) by involving Indigenous Villages in Bali. The implementation of policies such as PPKM in traditional villages cannot be carried out alone by the government but requires cooperation with various parties, including the community, health workers and security officers. In general, Babinkamtibmas are security officers in the village. However, in Bali, every traditional village has a pecalang as a traditional security officer based on traditional local wisdom. The local government through the Decree on the formation of the Customary Village-based Mutual Assistance Task Force has provided space for indigenous village communities to independently handle the Covid-19 pandemic faced by the Fire and Peninjoan Traditional Villages. With the provision of this space, the Covid-19 Gotong Royong Task Force can handle the ongoing pandemic on its own, starting from education, socialization, prevention and even handling. In addition, traditional villages also receive support from the Village Service so that they can coordinate with each other. The maintenance of conduciveness in the village is carried out well, with the synergy of traditional villages with official villages in handling Covid-19. The involvement of elements of the Traditional Village (pecalang) in a pandemic emergency situation is indeed possible and does not become a serious problem because what is put forward is the principle of benefit for humanity. Meanwhile, the success rate of involving traditional pecalang in Yang Api and Peninjoan Villages has worked well, although in August there was a surge in people infected with Covid 19, but it was more due to the many traditional events in the village, and not because of the negligence of the Covid task force in synergizing its main functions. The positive performance of the involvement of traditional villages in pandemic prevention needs to be continued in the future for activities that benefit the indigenous village community.

The druwe lands in question are lands controlled by traditional villages and scientific-technically called ulayat lands, customary lands. These lands in the traditional village awig-awig are called druwe desa which consist of laba pura land, field land, market land, setra land, bukit land, AYDS land, PKD land. Most of the druwe land in this village has been converted into full individual land through conversion according to the UUPA. One of the criteria for the existence of a traditional village can be measured by the sustainability of this druwe desa land as one of the village assets, both as material and immaterial assets. The conversion of druwe desa land often causes prolonged conflicts due to late awareness of the importance of preserving village druwe land. The potential of the druwe desa land when explored and adapted to the development of tourism in Bali can be a bonus for the village government and its krama desa (village residents) in achieving prosperity. To achieve this goal requires high awareness and commitment from krama desa, village government (custom and service), local government and government through policies in growing a culture of village manners in order to maintain the realization of the Tri Hitakarana philosophy in traditional villages which is used as an advantage for sustainable investment and as well as in strengthening the existence of traditional villages.

The Caga Traditional Village, which is located in Pejeng Kangin Village, Tampak Siring District, is one of the traditional villages that is currently seriously developing the village's potential as a tourist village. One of the efforts to improve that is now being promoted is regarding the cleanliness of the village. However, currently there is no comprehensive system capable of managing most of the waste generated by villagers. This village already has a waste bank but it only manages around 30% of the total waste generated. Organic waste which is much larger in quantity is still dumped in the "teba" or backyard. Another problem is the presence of residual waste, which has so far been collected and then transported to a landfill (TPS). The problem raised in this "community service program" is the public's ignorance of government policies regarding waste management and the proper procedures for managing waste from sources. Therefore, to support the government's efforts in realizing a waste management system from sources and to support the efforts of traditional villages to develop their potential as a tourism village, education on waste management from sources in the traditional village of Caga, Pejeng Kangin was implemented. Activities that have been carried out include the socialization of government regulations regarding waste processing at the source, optimization of waste banks, and processing of organic waste using the composting method. The implementation of Waste Processing from the Source by the Traditional Village of Caga, Tampaksiring District, Gianyar " received a good reception from the community and full support from the management of the Caga Traditional Village.

Traditional settlement space contains regional, natural, economic, historical, and cultural characteristics. The spatial texture serves as a material carrier of rural life and production and a vital landscape resource for the traditional villages. Traditional rural settlements have formed relatively unique and stable spatial form genes over time, which contain the “order” and “law” of spatial creation traditionally established in villages. The metropolis erodes traditional village spaces due to fast socioeconomic development and urbanization. In addition, the lack of adequate recognition and continuation of spatial texture in current mainstream village construction planning methods also limits the ability of villages to adapt to environmental changes and promote self-repair and adjustment, which, in turn, causes the gradual disappearance of their distinctive appearance. The reason is the need for more quantitative research and planning on the genes controlling the evolution of spatial texture morphology in traditional villages. They are faced with issues such as blind construction and development, a fracture in the rural characteristic spatial texture inheritance, and a loss of the distinctive vernacular landscape. Adopting an objective and in-depth approach to the cognition of traditional village space texture is an essential demand for the preservation, optimization, and renewal of the spatial appearance of rural settlements. We use the spatial genes of village settlements as its starting point. It then uses the spatial texture of village settlements connected to gene information mining as its specific method. We investigate the autogenous law of traditional village spatial form and determine its application using the CityEngine parametric platform, digitalization, and 3D visualization as the applied technical means. The feasibility and implementation path of the parameterization technique are explored using the traditional village of Xiaoxi in western Hunan Province as an example. We effectively promote the integration of rural spatial landscape resources, feature assessment, optimization guidance, and management control and provide an innovative research perspective and scientific planning path for analyzing the spatial morphological evolution of traditional villages.

Traditional villages are the place where national culture is nurtured and inherited. Due to the acceleration of urbanization, the protective exploitation of traditional villages is an urgency in many regions of the world. Under the perspective of the “Space Gene”, we define the connotation of the traditional village space gene, which refers not only to a space combination model, but also the basic inheritance unit of the sustainable development of traditional villages. We further propose the Quantitative Inheritance System Model of Traditional Village Space Genes, which reveals the logic behind the formation of traditional village material forms and builds a quantitative index system for traditional village forms. We take Shibadong Village as an example to prove the model. The results demonstrate that although the four camps in Shibadong Village belong to the same ethnic group and the same village, there are still apparent differences in morphological features. Through the model, we can turn from the “built form” research from the perspective of material space to the “deep structure” research behind it, which can provide scientific guidance for the planning and designs of traditional villages to inherit the history and culture and to protect the diversity of world culture.

This paper introduces the results of a project initiated by Cantho University (CTU) on the introduction of micro-credits for addressing the environmental pollution in Vietnam’s craft villages. At Tan Phu Dong, a traditional rice powder production village in Sa Dec, Dong Thap, all wastes from domestic and production activities and animal husbandry were freely disposed into open water sources. This practice led to a negative impact on the local environment. With the financial support provided by the Bread for the World (BfdW), a micro-credit program was initiated in which farmers could borrow money to construct a biogas plant to treat animal husbandry and domestic wastes. In addition, the staff transferred biogas plant construction technology to the local masons and organized training courses on biogas plant operation and maintenance and biogas usage for the farmers and the local officials. 61 farmers borrowed money from the program to construct their biogas plants, followed by more than 250 farmers that constructed their biogas plants by their own finance after realizing the positive benefits of biogas plants. As result, the environmental pollution issue was solved step-by-step, thereby helping enhance the living conditions of the local community

This research uses a mixed methods approach to analyze recent climate and land use changes, and farmers\' perceptions of climate change and its impacts on traditional agriculture in the village of Keur Samba Guéye (KSG). This work looks at the influence of social beliefs in adoption of new strategies by small farmers in this region, a topic that has received little or no study to date. Traditional agriculture in KSG is not very productive at present because of the impoverishment of the area and traditional agricultures strong dependency on natural climatic conditions. In this research, I identified recent climatic trends, documented changes in land use/land cover (LULC) from 1989 to 2011, and assessed farmers\' perceptions of climate change and their responses to such changes. To document climate trends and LULC, I analyzed climate data of twelve meteorological stations located across the country and created a classification of satellite images of KSG for two time periods. To examine farmers\' perceptions and agricultural practices, I conducted surveys of the farmers of KSG and in surrounding villages. Most farmers reported negative impacts of climate change on their agriculture activities, and interest in adopting new agricultural strategies despite long-standing tradition. Increasing temperatures and irregularity of rainfall may have negatively impacted crop yields, but more climate data are needed to clarify this phenomenon. LULC has been influenced by both climate change and human pressure; agricultural land has declined, while bare soils have increased. Several recommendations are provided that may help farmers to cope with changing climate.

Part III of the book focusses on Zvërnec, a small village located in the southern part of the Lagoon of Nartë, on a promontory over a small gulf (Gjiri i Vogël), which looks like a miniature of the ‘great’ Gulf of Vlorë (Gjiri i Vlorës). Zvërnec is part of the Protected Landscape Vjosë-Nartë and is well-known for the suggestive island which hosts the Byzantine church of the Dormition of Mary (Category I Cultural Monument), which every year attracts many faithful and tourists alike, both Albanian and foreign. In the first chapters, the importance of the intangible heritage is stressed. In Zvërnec the cultural traditions in the lagoon area play a pivotal role, especially the fishing tradition together with the culinary tradition connected to sea products. In the following chapters, the multiple aspects of the tangible heritage are analysed. The protected landscape of Vjosë-Nartë requested a special attention. It includes a number of habitats, which constitute one of the most significant assets in terms of biodiversity at a national level. Unfortunately, both active and dismantled industrial sites present in the area as well as questionable development policies, threaten the fragile and delicate lagoon landscape. As far as the built heritage is concerned, the Church of the Dormition of Mary, traditional dwellings and the abandoned military heritage were thoroughly analysed. For each of the aforementioned issues, the theoretical and historical analysis are closely bound to an evaluation of those features of the cultural heritage that could be enhanced to guarantee a sustainable tourism development of the area. Each chapter ends with a consistent set of specific intervention strategies. They are substantive tools for action aimed at public and private local actors.

AbstractOver 3 years, we undertook a micro hydropower (MHP) project in the Ciptagelar village, West Java, to improve the understanding and implementation of sustainable operations and management of MHP generation in remote rural areas, where the primary industry is farming and thus monetary incomes are low. First, we describe in this paper the history of setting up the research agenda to be tackled with the cooperation of governmental and nongovernmental stakeholders. Second, we report the current status of MHP plants and the related issues obtained through fieldwork and model simulations, in the context of culture, traditions, and society in the village. Finally, we propose guidelines to solve the issues and present the lessons learned and things scientists should pay attention to when proceeding with transdisciplinary research projects in remote rural areas. Through fieldwork and model simulations, we revealed issues related to budgeting and techniques for maintaining and operating MHP plants. We found that the village had difficulty in securing funds for repairing broken intake weirs, though it had funds to cover the general maintenance of the MHP plants. We also found that the intake weirs were vulnerable to large floods and that no accomplished technicians were available to operate MHP plants in the village properly. To solve these issues, we need to find ways to reinforce the intake weirs using local materials and increase monetary incomes by creating new industries based on the MHP generation while considering the cultural and traditional backgrounds of the remote rural areas.

Traditional villages are an important carrier of traditional Chinese culture, and about 35.28% of China's population lives in villages. Because of the loss of local characteristics in public places and over-urbanization of villages, villagers' place attachment needs are not satisfied. Taking Futian town in Jiangxi province as an example, this paper measures the degree of place attachment of residents of different age groups to elements of the village public landscape by using a place attachment questionnaire and villagers' interviews, explores the factors of differences in attachment perceptions of residents of each age group and explores the characteristics of village public landscape that trigger local attachment of local residents.

As a primary material carrier of Chinese farming civilization, traditional villages have the dual attributes of villages and heritage. The traditional village cannot be regenerated if they were destroyed. Therefore, it is urgent to find a suitable development model and way out in the context of high-speed urbanization. The proper planning of traditional villages mainly covers two aspects of protection and development for a long time. The preparation and management of various types of planning are also intertwined and even contradictory. “Multiple-planning” is an effective way to solve the conflicts between different administrative departments and different types of planning in the current planning process, and also provides a practical planning idea and method for the future of traditional villages. Firstly, the research analyzes the existing planning types of traditional villages and points out that because of the difference of objectives, strategies, and executives, there come three common problems: The protection measures are not easy to implement; The development strategies are unsustainable; The planning and implementation are not connected. These problems directly affected the implementation of planning. They not only hinder the effective conservation of cultural heritage but also restrict the revitalization of the village's economic development. Furthermore, the research discusses the necessity and feasibility of “Multiple-planning” in the conservation and development of traditional villages and proposes a conservation and development planning framework for traditional villages from the perspective of “Multiple-planning.” Finally, the research is taking a traditional village conservation and development planning of Liugou in Yanqing District of Beijing as an example. Accomplished valuable planning in the perspective of “Multiple-planning” through objective and systematic status analyzing, exceptional and feasible conservation planning, scientific and sustainable development planning.

In Chinese traditional village, the morphological transformation of village tissue was embedded in the changing of co-existing morphological elements contains original plots, that recorded the geographical evidence of social structural changing from traditional private ownership economy to rural collective economy. The internal relationships of original plots, derivative plots and building types require investigation in detail as theoretical praxis in the morphological research of village. Several questions need to be clarified: is that the plot restricted to the block, or the plots constitute the block? Is that plot limits building types or building type decides the size of the plot? Whether the plot can be re-divided when the building belong to its kept unchanging? And how the building type transited when the plots size reducing or extending? Focusing on a village in north of China this paper will investigate how the morphological elements worked and acted during the village transformation, based on the field survey, village records and the family documents. Our results will indicate that the role of the street, plots and building types were different between villages and urban, which were interacted each other differently. The concepts derivative plots and the co-relation between the plots, the derivative plots and building types of the village are developed.

Currently, there is a rapid growth of demand for cultural tourism and there is a growing trend of cultural interest as a tourism product in the world. Indonesia has a lot of cultural and historical heritage with a multicultural population and serves as an integral part of the world's cultural heritage. In order to have an impact on the economy, this cultural heritage must be managed properly. Therefore there needs to be a study on the cultural heritage tourism model by balancing the interests between the tourism industry and heritage preservation as the main agenda to get a mutually sustainable relationship in cultural heritage tourism. The objectives in research are to; 1) knowing the potential of the Maghilewa traditional village as a cultural tourism destination, 2) knowing the feasibility of the traditional village as a cultural heritage destination, 3) formulating the steps that will be taken to prepare the traditional village as a cultural heritage destination. This research is a qualitative descriptive study to get an overview of the potential and feasibility of cultural tourism villages and the steps to make traditional villages into cultural tourism destinations. The results showed that the traditional village of Maghilewa was feasible to be developed into a cultural heritage destination. In developing the traditional village of Maghilewa, it is feasible as a cultural heritage destination, it requires a lot of support from the community, local government, and academics. The steps that must be taken are to build synergy between stakeholders in order to build the capacity of the Maghilewa Traditional Village community and encourage the Regional Government to implement comprehensive policies in participatory tourism development by prioritizing the conservation of local culture.
