This study constitutes a major contribution to our understanding of women, gender and rural development within and beyond China. Examining 60 years of economic, political and social change in one village in Yunnan province, this book has both depth and breadth. Research in Lu village, also the site of Fei Xiao-tong's very fine field study conducted in the 1940s and reported in Earthbound China, enables the author to examine how larger concepts and abstractions such as Chinese culture, communist planning and market-driven reforms shape and are shaped by gender definitions and relations in everyday practice.

The China Tong Shan She has been a dominant religious group in China since its establishment in 1917. The status of the China Tong Shan She has been esteemed as equal to the Buddhism and Taoism in Chinese communities. Throughout its nationwide branches in China, it recruited numerous loyal members not only common people but also celebrities, rich merchants and dignitaries of government. The number of its members had been approximately estimated about thirty million during the early twentieth century. Apparently, the organization scale of the China Tong Shan She excelled far more other religious groups. Since 1949, any religion was banned by the China Communist. As a consequence, some members of the Tong Shan She fled to Taiwan and other Asian countries. By means of the contrivance of Mr. Huang Jeng Sheng and other great seniors, the Tian Yi Xiang Hao Zhuo Shan Tang inherited the spirit of the China Tong Shan She and regenerated in Taiwan. The Tian Yi Xiang Hao Zhuo Shan Tang revitalized Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism as a trinity which represents an existence of threefold significant regilous philosophies in modern Chinese cultural circle. Ullambana Sutra ritual has been set up as an annual custom event of the Tong Shan She. The mode of its ceremonials and music was based on《Confucian Analects》. Ullambana Sutra ritual has always been held at the residence of a friend of same belief at Sanzhi District in New Taipei City in recent years. The whole ritual still follows ancient tradition in early times, owing to the place limitation, only the ceremonials and music of Confusion mode is adapted nowadays. The aspect of ritual seems not prosperous as that Confusion mode, the Buddhism mode and the Taoism mode held together at the same time in every province in China. Drawing upon the cultural viewpoints and its two main purposes, the present study explores the Confusion mode music in three aspects: the etiquette music, the ceremonial music and the penitent music employed in the Ullambana Sutra ritual. In addition, the present study illuminates the significance of the trinity of the Tian Yi Xiang Hao Zhuo Shan Tang by means of analyzing the ceremonials and music of Ullambana Sutra ritual.

Islam’s impact on China is growing because its external and internal influences are more intertwined than ever. Islamic civilization permeates the New Silk Road, shaping all of China’s efforts to integrate megaregions throughout Afro-Eurasia. At the same time, the development of Islam inside China changes the way Chinese people define themselves as a nation and as members of the human family. The deeper China enmeshes itself in the Islamic world, the more Chinese must ask themselves what it means to be Chinese. When Chineseness is understood more inclusively and universally, China gains greater effectiveness in relating to Muslims everywhere, regardless of nationality. For generations, Chinese scholars from many disciplines have drawn upon Sino-Islamic interchanges to reinterpret Chinese identity in more pluralist and cosmopolitan ways. Especially notable are the contributions of Gu Jie Gang in history and ethnography, Fei Xiao Tong in social science, and Tang Jun Yi in neo-Confucian philosophy.

A range of biological activity was observed for the group of 3,6-anhydro-2-deoxy hexosides, of which 3 is representative, isolated from Sauropus rostratus. Wei-Jia Xie and Xiao-Ming Wu of China Pharmaceutical University prepared (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 5004) 3 by the dealkylative cyclization of 1 to 2. (+)-Ipomeamarone 6 is a phytoalexin isolated from mold-damaged sweet pota­toes. Yoshinosuke Usuki of Osaka City University assembled (Chem. Lett. 2014, 43, 1882) 6 by the diastereoselective cyclization of 4 to 5. Hiromichi Fujioka of Osaka University protected (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 3680) the enone of 7 by the conjugate addition of triphenylphosphine. Diastereoselective reduc­tion of the other ketone followed by deprotection of the enone and cyclization led to 8, that was hydrogenated to decytospolide A 9. En route to cytospolide P 12, Rajib Kumar Goswami of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science had planned (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 7689) the ring-closing metathesis of 10. This failed, but cyclization of the corresponding silyl ether to 11 was successful with the second-generation Hoveyda catalyst. Rongbiao Tong of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology set (J. Org. Chem. 2014, 79, 6987) the absolute configuration of (+)-didemniserinolipid B 15 by Sharpless asymmetric osmylation of the alkene 13. Oxidative Achmatowicz rearrangement/bicycloketalization then delivered 14. Xuegong She of Lanzhou University observed (Org. Lett. 2014, 16, 4440) remark­able diastereoselectivity in the reductive cyclization of 16 to 17. Oxidation of 17 led to regioselective cyclization to gymnothelignan N 18.
