Work begun during the Solar Maximum Year (SMY) (1980-1981) was the focus of several sympsoia and workshops starting in March 1981 with the International SMY Workshop in Simferopol, Crimea (Obridko 1981). Results of the Annecy SMY Workshop (Annecy, France, October 1981) were presented in May 1982 with later work presented at the first SMY symposium (ĸvestka et al. 1982) in Ottawa, Canada. A special symposium for the Study of Travelling Interplanetary Phenomena was held in Maynooth, Ireland, in August 1982 (Shea et al. 1984). Another SMY workshop was held in November 1983 in Kunming, China (Chen 1984), and the second SMY symposium was held in June 1984 in Graz, Austria (Simon 1985). The scientific progress of the SMY is detailed in the above-mentioned publications and in the 1982 U.S.-Japan Seminar “Recent Advances in the Understanding of Solar Flares” (Kane et al. 1983). Highlights of the work of the SMY’s Flare Build-Up Study, Study of Energy Release in Flares, and Study of Travelling Interplanetary Phenomena are presented below.

Using R.D. Cowan’s computations (1979) and parametric calculations of Meinders et al (1982), old analyses are thoroughly revised and extended at Aligarh, of Zr III by Khan et al (1981), of Nb IV by Shujauddin et Chaghtai (1985), of Mo V by Tauheed at al (1985). Cabeza et al (1986) confirmed the last one largely.Extensive studies have been reported of the 1–e spectra, Zr IV (Rahimullah et al 1980; Acquista and Reader 1980), Nb V (Shujauddin et al 1982; Kagan et al 1981) and Mo VI (Edlén et al 1985). Some interacting 4p54d2levels of these spectra have been reported from our laboratory, also.Detailed spectral analyses of transitions between excited states have furnished complete energy values for J ≠ 1 levels of these spectra during 1970s and 80s. Shujauddin et al (1982) have worked out Nb VI and Tauheed et al (1984) Mo VII from our lab, while Khan et al (1981) share the work on Zr V with Reader and Acquista (1979).

A major goal of paleobiological research since the early 1960s has been the reconstruction in quantitative terms of the history of biological diversity. Spearheaded by Valentine (1969), Raup (1972, 1976a, b), and Sepkoski (1979, 1981, 1984, 1990, 1993), this effort has yielded estimates of global diversity through time, as well as calculations of global rates and magnitudes of extinction and diversification. A consensus emerging in the early 1980s (Sepkoski et al. 1981) indicated that global marine invertebrate diversity rose through the Cambrian and Ordovician periods to a plateau, which with brief extinction-related interruptions was maintained from the mid-Paleozoic to the mid-Mesozoic. Beginning in the Cretaceous, diversity rose again, reaching a peak in the late Neogene. The five mass extinctions of the Phanerozoic, and more or less distinct episodes of diversification, were identified and distinguished from many lesser events (Raup and Sepkoski 1982). Comparable studies, with varying results, were conducted on land vertebrates (Benton 1985, 1989), land plants (Knoll et al. 1979; Niklas et al. 1980, 1983; Tiffney 1981; Knoll 1984), early protistans (Knoll 1994), insects (Labandeira and Sepkoski 1993), and life as a whole (Van Valen 1984, 1985; Van Valen and Maiorana 1985; Signor 1990; Valentine et al. 1991; Benton 1995; Courtillot and Gaudemer 1996; Miller and Foote 1996).

Long-term variability of the cold subsurface water (CSW) in the Okhotsk Sea is analyzed on the base of all available oceanographic data collected in March through August of 1946-2015 (total 65,742 stations). The Integral Heat Content (IHC) is calculated for each station and average annual IHC anomalies of the cold subsurface water are determined by month and by 2-degree grid. The IHC anomaly series are analyzed using the EOF analysis. Cycles with period of approximately 30 years are revealed in the variations of the subsurface layer heat content. Thus, in the 1946-1950, its temperature decreased, but it grew since 2009-2010 to 2015. The warming of CSW was also observed in the 1951-1964 and 1978-1994, while the cooling was in the 1965-1977 and 1995-2008. Based on this criterion, the CSW thermal condition in certain years is classified as «extremely cold» in 2001, as «cold» in 1949, 1950, 1951, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1999, 2000, 2010, 2012, as «normal» in 1946, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1961, 1962, 1965, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, as «warm» in 1948, 1956, 1964, 1968, 1974, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1997, 2015, and as «extremely warm» in 1963. Statistically significant correlation is found between changes of the CSW thermal conditions and long-term variations of atmosphere and ocean climate indices, as well as local patterns of the atmosphere-ice-ocean interaction in the Okhotsk Sea and adjacent onshore and offshore areas of Asia and the Pacific Ocean.

Abundant examples of exoskeletal abnormalities have been known in various trilobites since Portlock's (1843) first report on a teratological pygidium of Phillipsia ornata (cf. Babcock, 2000). Owen (1985) and Babcock (1993) recognized three types of trilobite malformations: healed injuries, teratological conditions, and pathological conditions. It is not always easy, however, to distinguish between the various types of malformations, especially in case of teratological or pathological conditions. In general, healed injuries are considered to have resulted from trauma during molting (Walcott, 1883; Whittington, 1956; Henningsmoen, 1975; Snajdr, 1981; Owen, 1983; Ramsköld, 1984) or wounds by predatory attack (Ludvigsen, 1977; Rudkin, 1979; Ŝnajdr, 1979, 1981; Owen, 1985; Conway Morris and Jenkins, 1985; Babcock, 1993; Pratt, 1998). Many healed injuries are indicated by broken spine stumps, indented and cicatrized edges of exoskeletons, and callused or regenerated exoskeleton around the broken surface (Ŝnajdr, 1981; Owen, 1983; Babcock, 1993). Teratological conditions are represented primarily by the irregular development of glabellar lobes, cephalic borders, and pygidial border spines, and anomalous number of segments on the thorax and pygidium. For example, Owen (1980) described a teratological cranidium of Calyptaulax norvegicus with two additional lateral glabellar lobes between the l p and 2p lobes. On the other hand, pathological conditions are marked by gall-like swellings and vermiform borings on exoskeletons that are thought to have been caused by diseases or parasitic infestation (Lochman, 1941; Ŝnajdr, 1978; Conway Morris, 1981; Owen, 1985).

Based on the investigation data of mercury (Hg) in waters in Jiaozhou bay during time peroids of 1979 to 1985 (absent of 1984), this paper tried to analysis the content, pollution level and theis temporal variations of Hg in Jiaozhou Bay, to reveal the changing trend of Hg, and to provide basis for pollution control of Hg in the bay. Results showed that, during 1979-1985, water in Jiaozhou Bay had been polluted by Hg in certain levels. For seasonal variation, there was a dicreasing trend form summer to winter in 1979, 1981 and 1985, and an increasing trend form summer to winter in 1980 and 1983. For annual variation, there was an obvious decreasing trend of Hg pollution from 1979-1982, while from 1982-1985 an increasing trend occurred. The temporal variation of Hg in Jiaozhou Bay reflects the conflict between economic growth and environmental protection. Having in mind that the environmental carrying capacity of Jiaozhou Bay is not unlimited, and the environmental disruption might finally cause economic loss and disasters to the human, we believe that the dischargd load of Hg should be limited in a suitable amount.

The growing interest in the status of women in the Australian workforce has prompted a related interest in the position of women in certain industries, occupations and professions. Several studies have begun to emerge which have explored women's employment position and status in law (Mathews, 1982; Bretos, 1984); chartered accountancy (Equal Opportunity Board, Victoria, 1983); retailing (Turner & Glare, 1982); and social work (Brown & Turner, 1985). The position of women managers in business has also been examined by the Victorian Office of Women's Affairs (1981) and Still (1985), while Sampson (1985) is currently investigating the status of women in the primary, secondary and technical areas of the teaching profession.

Opening ParagraphIn the literature and accumulated folk wisdom of development in rural Africa there are numerous instances of government projects which are expensive, ineffective and unpopular. These include now classic failures of the past, such as the Tanganyika Groundnuts Scheme (Wood, 1950; Frankel, 1953), which are still cited as cautionary tales demonstrating the need for proper project appraisal. There are also numerous more recent examples, for the phenomenon of failure has persisted and governments and international agencies continue to implement schemes ‘little better planned than their more spectacularly misbegotten predecessors’ (Hill, 1978: 25). Among recent initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa the large-scale irrigation projects developed in northern Nigeria during the 1970s have attracted particularly extensive adverse criticism. This has focused on the social and economic impact of the introduction of irrigation and particularly on questions of land tenure (inter alia Wallace, 1979, 1980, 1981; Oculi, 1981; Adams, 1982, 1984; Palmer-Jones, 1984; Andrae and Beckman, 1985; Beckman, 1986). A number of accounts discuss technical aspects of the land survey carried out at Bakolori {Bird, 1981, 1984, 1985; Griffith, 1984), while others focus on economic problems (e.g. Etuk and Abalu, 1982). However, although economic and technical aspects of these developments have been criticised, it is the social impacts of project development and more particularly the political responses to those impacts which are of greatest interest (Wallace, 1980; Adams, 1984; Andrae and Beckman, 1985; Beckman, 1986). This paper examines the bature of the response of farmers affected by one of these schemes, the Bakolori Project in Sokoto State.

L'emigration contemporaine grecque, se dirigeant surtout vers les pays europeens, est principalement due a l'incapacite du secteur moderne - et specialement de l'industrie- d'absorber d'une facon productive la main d'oeuvre disponible par l'augmentation naturelle de la population et le declin du secteur primaire. Cela ne veut pas dire que le processus d'industrialisation ne s'est pas produit. Au contraire, mais il n'etait pas de la nature, qui pourrait resoudre les problemes de l'emploi dans le pays. La politique economique poursuivie a amene a un desequilibre entre la production interne et la demande, en privilegeant celle-ci. Une augmentation des niveaux de prix a ete evitee pendant une certaine periode par un relachement des restrictions sur les importations. De toute facon, cela a amene a un accroissement du deficit de la balance des paiements. Le pays est devenu de plus en plus dependant de recettes invisibles, des investissements etrangers et des emprunts a l'etranger. Les mandats des emigrants ont ete une source precieuse de devises etrangeres. De tout point de vue le gouvernement n'avais aucune raison de souhaiter un ralentissement de l'emigration
Contemporary emigration from greece, basically of western european orientation, has been mainly due to the inability of the modern sector - and especially of industry - to absorb productively the labour made available through natural population increase and releases from the primary sector. This is not to say that industrialisation did not occur. It did of course, but it was not of the kind that would solve the country's employment problem. The economic policies pursued led to an imbalance between production and demand in favour of the latter. A rise of price levels was avoided for a period through the lifting of restrictions on imports. This however led to a widening of the balance of payments deficit. The country became increasingly dependent on invisible receipts, foreign investment and loans from abroad. Emigrants remittances have been a valuable source of foreign exchange. In many respects the government had every reason not to want to curb emigraiton

This thesis investigates the economic, military, multilateral, African and direct political relationship between France and South Africa between 1945 and 1985. Subjects discussed include co-operation in the colonial era, the relationsrJp at the Ut~, South Africa's African diplomacy, nuclear, military and conventional exchange, Over time, the relationship became increasingly complex as pressure against official contact increased, leading eventually to France applying a limited sanctions regime against Pretoria in 1985. However, even as measures expressing official French condemnation of apartheid were established, an intimate and sensitive sub-official relationship was maintained. South Africa's attempt to secure itself against international challenges was more sophisticated and successful than sometimes suggested. it also witnesses the connivance of French government, which always considered French exporters above all else, with the creation of a relationship impervious to external pressure. However, that France did not do more to develop its interests in South Africa, and, indeed, was forced to give concessions to the international anti-apartheid movement, establishes its vulnerability to the largely African pressure to change its policy. This refutes the view that France was an unrestrained friend to SouLh Africa. It also challenges the widely held perception of French neo-colonial influence in Africa. Rather than an expression of Paris's autonomy, French policy in South Africa was a pragmatic attempt to manage the competing pressures upon it, either to extend or break relations with South Africa. The way that the French state negotiated these competing dema_nds provides a window on the development of wider French African policy, its goals and the influence of actors, both domestic and intemational, upon its creation. France's African policy emerges as hesitant, inconsistent, and bereft of clear PUlpOSe; characteristics reflected in the parochialism of the majorit"j of the French electorate.

Rafael Moneo, a Spanish architect and educator who has been practicing architecture in Madrid since 1965, rose in the profession from local practitioner to designer of international reputation in the mid-1980s with his Museum of Roman Art in MWrida (1980-86) and into the highest ranks of academe when he assumed the chairmanship of the Department of Architecture at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University (1985-1990). Moneo's work falls into three distinct periods: the pre-Harvard Spanish years (1965-85), the five Harvard years (1985-90), and the post-Harvard international years (1990-present). This dissertation traces the systematic and reflective character of Moneo's double practice up to 1985; it fits his uninterrupted professional practice into the context of his academic career, suggesting that his commitment to both professional practice and knowledge of the discipline is what led him to form a coherent philosophy of design. Throughout the years the contents of his teaching and writing have imbued his built projects with a programmatic character derived from his critique of modern architecture in the 1960s, investigations in architectural theory in the 1970s, and interpretation of the history of Western architecture in the early 1980s and allowed him to achieve a synthetic reading of the modern within the Western tradition of building.

It is his drive to design and explain the building, not as part of a local tradition, but as the work of a cultured architect able to transcend national borders that has allowed him to have an all-encompassing career that combines practice and teaching. Moneo is generally considered to be the most independent thinker and the most intellectual of the architects of his generation. Through the influence of the Spanish philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset Moneo's ability to "reabsorb his circumstances" was a source of necessity and freedom to connect practice with intellect: he could become both architect and educator furthering the cultural development of Spain. Using the Italian aesthete Luigi Pareyson's theory of "formativity," which regards material and form as inseparable, Moneo realized that the making of architectural form lay in its construction and formalized the principles of his philosophy of design.

Abstract Much evidence exists showing a relationship between male unemployment and marital dissolution. Payne (1989) notes that in 1985 the proportion of widowed, divorced, and separated men aged 16-64 who were unemployed was approximately twice the proportion of married men aged 16-64 who were unemployed. (Source: OPCS General Household Survey, 1985). Other authors, such as Ross and Sawhill (1975), Daniel (1981), Haskey (1984), Eekelaar and Maclean (1986), Warr (1987), and Liem and Liem (1988), have also referred to data which suggests that there may be a causal connection between male unemployment and marital dissolution.

Abstract CCK was originally isolated by Mutt and Jorpes (1968) from porcine intestine. Vanderhaeghen et al. (1975) described CCK/gastrin-like material in the rat brain, and it was then shown to represent mainly the C-terminal octapeptide (CCK-8) (Dockray 1976, 1980; Muller et al. 1977; Dockray et al. 1978; Rehfeld 1978a, b; Beinfeld et al. 1980). In fact, in several brain regions CCK-8 is the most abundant neuropeptide (Crawley 1985). In addition to these radioimmunoassay studies, numerous immunohistochemical investigations showing extensive CCK immunoreactive neuron systems in the brain and spinal cord have been published (Innis et al. 1979; Larsson and Rehfeld 1979; Lorén et al. 1979; Vanderhaeghenetal. 1980, 1982; Kiyamaetal. 1983; Kubota et al. 1983; Fuji et al. 1985; Hökfelt et al. 1985, 1988; Vanderhaeghen 1985). More recently, in situ hybridization with radio-labelled probes complementary to CCK messenger RNA (mRNA) has been employed and not only confirmed most results from immunohistochemical studies but also provided interesting new findings (Siegel and Young 1985; Burgunder and Young 1988, 1990; Savasta et al. 1988, 1989; Voigt and Uhl 1988; Ingram et al. 1989; Lanaud et al. 1989; Seroogy et al. 1989b, 1990; Cortés et al. 1991a, b; Jayaraman et al. 1990; Sutin and Jakobowitz 1990).

Abstract In the following article I shall present a new approach to the microanalytic study of cognitive-affective regulatory processes in psychotherapeutic interaction. In this approach the examination of the expressive component of emotions communicated through facial expressions is of central importance. The approach is based on the assumption, shared by many psychotherapists, that the interaction between client and therapist contributes essentially to therapeutic change (Caspar & Grawe, 1989; Elliott, 1984; Gill & Hoffman, 1982; Grawe, 1987; Greenberg & Safran, 1987; Horowitz, 1979; Krause, 1982, 1984; Moser, 1985; Rice & Greenberg, 1984; Safran, 1990a, 1990b; Schneider, 1989; Stem, 1985; Strupp, 1987; Sullivan, 1953; Thoma & Kiichele, 1985, 1988; Weiss, Sampson et al., 1986). However, little is known about how these processes of change work. It is true that there is a considerable amount of clinical knowledge about emotions in therapeutic interactions at a macrolevel, but we still know too little about what is happening at a microlevel of affective processes within therapy. It is thus important to develop methods to examine the therapeutic interaction, along with the cognitive-affective processes involved.

Abstract DNA topoisomerases are a class of enzymes that modulate the topo logical structure of DNA. Since the discovery of the first topoisomerase 20 years ago (Wang 1971), many of the properties of this class of enzymes have been elucidated and this progress has been the subject of many reviews (Cozzarelli 1980; Gellert 1981; Liu 1983; Drlica 1984; Wang 1985, 1987b; Maxwell and Gellert 1986; Yanagida and Wang 1987; Osheroff 1989a; Austin and Fisher 1990, Champoux 1990; Hsieh 1990;.Osheroff et al. 1991). In purified systems, topoisomerases relax supercoiled DNA, and can tie and untie DNA knots, and link and unlink catenated DNA circles. In eukaryotic cells, type I topoisomerases are associated with elongating transcription and replication forks, while type II topoisomerases are essential for segregating daughter chromosomes after DNA replication is complete (Yanagida and Wang 1987). Topoisomerases are also the target of a number of antineoplastic and antibacterial agents whose cytotoxic effects appear to arise from the stabilization of a complex between the topoisomerase and DNA (Ross 1985; Glisson and Ross 1987; Drlica and Franco 1988; Liu 1989; Smith 1990).

Abstract Competition and predation have both been considered as important factors in determining the community structure of animals, but their relative importance is controversial (Connell 1983; Schoener 1983; Sih et al. 1985). In herbivorous insects, predation has been generally considered more important than competition (Hairston et al. 1960; Lawton and Strong 1981; Connell 1983; Schoener 1983; Lawton and Hassell 1984; Strong et al. 1984; Sih et al. 1985). However, there are a few exceptions (reviewed in Schoener 1983; Strong et al. 1984), and the relative importance of these factors differs depending on environmental conditions, trophic positions, and taxa (Connell 1983; Schoener 1983; Colwell 1984; Sih et al. 1985). Furthermore, it has been suggested that the direct influence of host plants on herbivorous insects (Crawley 1983; Denno and McClure 1983; Coley et al. 1985; Rhoades 1985; Mattson et al. 1988; Schultz 1988) and indirect influences through natural enemies (Price et al. 1980) may also be strong factors, and that within-plant heterogeneity can affect the survival and reproduction of herbivorous insects (Crawley 1983; Schultz 1983; Whitham et al. 1984).

Historically, electrochemical processes have been limited to the production of inorganic compounds, and commercial processes based on electroorganic synthesis have found only limited application. It appeared to be an “odious truth” (Fry, 1972) that electrochemical techniques were ignored in organic synthesis. But the past 25 years have witnessed the introduction of a fairly large number of new electroorganic processes with attendant advances in electrochemical process analysis. The most remarkable has been Monsanto’s highly successful electrochemical route for the production of adiponitrile. A particularly notable advance is the electrosynthesis of fine chemicals and natural products. Combinations of electrosynthesis with other strategies of rate or selectivity enhancement such as catalysis by PTC and by enzymes (Chapters 19 and 20) are also adding exciting possibilities to organic synthesis. Simultaneously, fundamental understanding of the principles of organic electrochemistry, electrode kinetics, and transport processes in electrochemical systems has grown rapidly in the last decade. A number of books and reviews have appeared on electroorganic chemistry during this period, for example, Eberson and Schafer (1971), Fry (1972), Beck (1974), Perry and Chilton (1976), Rifi and Covitz (1975, 1980), Weinberg (1974, 1990), Swann and Alkire (1980), Kyriacou (1981), Fletcher (1982), Baizer and Lund (1983), Baizer (1973, 1984), Shono (1984), Fletcher and Walsh (1990), Little and Weinberg (1991), Bowden (1997), Bockris (1998), Hamann (1998). This period also saw the emergence of electrochemical reaction engineering as a distinct discipline of chemical reaction engineering, as evidenced by a number of books and reviews on the subject, for example, Picket (1979), Udupa (1979), Danly (1980, 1984), Alkire and Beck (1981), Weinberg et al. (1982), Alkire and Chin (1983), Fahidy (1985), Mine (1985), Goodridge et al. (1986), Rousar et al. (1986), Heitz and Krysa (1986), Ismail (1989), Scott (1991), Prentice (1991), Goodridge and Scott (1995). Electroorganic synthesis offers opportunities for performing many of the conventional organic reactions at controlled rates and greater product selectivities without the addition of any catalyst. The processes almost always employ milder conditions and are characterized by greatly reduced air and water pollution. Further, there are a number of syntheses that can only be carried out electrochemically, such as the Kolbe synthesis and electrochemical perfluorination.

The journey proved intriguing.

Abstract Over a decade ago, Pfeffer and Salancik (1978) lamented that although organization theory had increasingly emphasized the importance of the environment in explaining the behavior of organizations, empirical studies of how organizations gathered and used information about their environment were surprisingly scarce. Since then, a small but growing body of work on environmental analysis units has emerged in the strategy field (Dieffenbach, 1983; Engledow & Lenz, 1985; Fahey & King, 1979; Fahey, King, & Narayan, 1981; Fuld, 1985; Ghoshal & Kim, 1986; Jain, 1984; Lenz & Engledow, 1986; Montgomery & Weinberg, 1979; Narchal, Kittapa, & Bhattacharya, 1987; Post et al., 1982; Prescott & Smith, 1987; Sammon, Kurland, & Spitalnic, 1984; Stubbart, 1982; Thomas, 1980). However, the findings have been contradictory and inconclusive. Despite the widespread assumption that business environments are becoming increasingly volatile and that therefore companies should want to set up formal systems to monitor and analyze those environments, studies to date have found no clear patterns of evolution and institutionalization. As one summary of the literature put it: “In practice, firms are experiencing difficulties in implementing and effectively conducting environmental analysis it is apparent that there is still considerable uncertainty about viable structures for environmental analysis units and significant administrative problems accompanying their use” (Lenz & Engledow, 1986, pp. 71, 83).

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is critically involved in cognitive processes underlying working memory (WM), attention, and inhibition of responses to non-relevant stimuli (Fuster, 2000; Goldman-Rakic, 1996). In this context, catecholaminergic inputs have proven to be critical for the regulation of these cognitive processes (Levitt et al., 1984; Lewis et al., 1987; Lewis and Morrison, 1989; Porrino and Goldman-Rakic, 1982). Aston-Jones and Bloom (1981a, b) showed that, in addition to dopamine (DA) the norepinephrine (NE) neurons located in the locus coeruleus (LC) and terminating in the PFC are important in mediating selective and sustained attention and vigilance. Moreover, stimulation of the LC increases the discrimination of incoming external stimuli to the PFC by reducing the background noise, therefore enhancing the cortical signal-to-noise ratio (Aston-Jones et al., 1985; Berridge and Waterhouse, 2003; Foote et al., 1980, 1983; Waterhouse et al., 1980; Robbins, 2000). More recently, several studies have shown that adrenergic agonists, especially specific alpha-2 agonists, are very effective in enhancing WM and attention. Indeed, administration of alpha-2 agonists can ameliorate some of the negative effects on cognition produced by NE depletion due to aging in monkeys (Arnsten and Goldman-Rakic, 1985; Arnsten et al., 1988; Arnsten and Leslie, 1991) and improve performance in WM-related tasks in young monkeys with NE depletion (Arnsten and Goldman-Rakic, 1985; Cai et al., 1993). Moreover, the therapeutic effects of the specific alpha-2 agonists, clonidine and guanfacine in treating disorders related to dysfunction of WM in patients have been proved (Fields et al., 1988; Mair and McEntree 1986, 1988; Hunt et al., 1985, 1990, 1995).

The normal course of acuity development for healthy fullterm infants has been well documented using both forced-choice preferential-looking (FPL) and visually evoked potential (VEP) procedures. This normal course of acuity development has also been shown to be vulnerable to the effects of abnormal visual experience during early development. Whether preterm birth, and attendant extreme immaturity of the visual system, renders infants more susceptible to the effects of visual experience is a question which remains unanswered. One approach to this issue has been to examine the impact of preterm visual experience on the rate of acuity development. A more rapid rate of acuity development for preterm infants than for fullterm infants would provide evidence for the influence of visual experience on the developing preterm visual system. Most FPL and VEP acuity data suggest that the rate of visual development for preterm and fullterm infants is equivalent when they are compared on the basis of postconceptual age; i.e., visual experience does not accelerate development in preterm infants (Baraldi et al., 1981; Birch and Spencer, 1989; Dobson, 1980, 1983; Fantz, 1975; Morante et al., 1982; vanHof-vanDuin and Mohn, 1984, 1985). However, there are also several reports, including both FPL and VEP studies, which are consistent with accelerated visual development in preterm infants, including FPL acuity (Mohn and vanHof-vanDuin, 1986), sweep VEP acuity (Norcia et al., 1985), and VEP latency (Sokol and Jones, 1978).

A special case of the shape from shading problem, applicable to surfaces with unusual reflecting properties, was solved by Rindfleisch (1966). For the special reflectance properties he considered, a profile of the solution surface can be obtained by integrating along predetermined straight lines in the image plane. The general problem was formulated and solved later (Horn, 1970 and 1975). The method of characteristic strip expansion was used originally to solve the nonlinear first-order partial differential image irradiance equation. The reflectance map makes the analysis of the shape from shading algorithm much easier, provided that both light sources and viewer are far away from the scene being viewed (Horn, 1977; Horn and Sjoberg, 1979). Several iterative schemes, mostly based on minimization of some function containing an integral of the brightness error, arose later (Woodham, 1977; Strat, 1979; Ikeuchi and Horn, 1981; Kirk, 1984; Brooks and Horn, 1985; Horn and Brooks, 1986; Kirk, 1987; Frankot and Chellappa, 1988). Abstract The reliability of surface mount leadless solder joints, e.g., LCCC (leadless ceramic chip carrier), LCR (leadless chip resistor), and LCC (leadless chip capacitor), has been a long-term research topic due to the concern of thermal fatigue failure resulting from significant stresses and strains induced in the joint. Numerous studies of failure analysis of leadless solder joints exist in the literature, and a number of life prediction models based on different failure characterizing parameters, e.g., total strain, plastic strain, strain energy density, etc., have been developed for particular loading conditions, such as isothermal or thermal cyclic fatigue tests. Recent work on the psychophysics of reading has concentrated primarily on achromatic (or luminance) contrast factors (Legge et al, 1985, 1986, 1987). In general, reading is fastest with text of high contrast defined by luminance contours. In the real world, however, chromatic as well as luminance edges abound. While several studies have examined the interaction of chromatic and luminance contrasts on stimuli near threshold (e.g., Mullen, 1987; Knoblauch et al, 1984; Jameson, 1985; Switkes et al, 1988), only a few have investigated suprathreshold levels. Legge et al, (1986) demonstrated that for observers with normal vision, the luminance contrast and not the color of text on a dark background determines reading rate. This finding is consistent with threshold studies that show that the color of a grating does not affect luminance contrast sensitivity either (Nelson and Halberg, 1979), provided that one avoids frequencies near the diffraction limit (Pokorny et al, 1968; Van Nes and Bouman, 1967).

Dobson spectrophotometer No. 83 was established in 1962 as a standard for total ozone measurements in the United States. In 1980, the instrument was designated by the World Meteorological Organization as the Primary Standard Dobson spectrophotometer for the world. Since the early 1970’s, instrument No. 83 has been used extensively to calibrate instruments of the global Dobson total ozone station network. Calibrations of the instrument (on the Vigroux (1953) ozone absorption coefficient scale for AD wavelengths) were performed by the Langley slope method (Dobson and Normand, 1962) at Sterling, Virginia, in 1962, and at Mauna Loa, Hawaii in 1972, 1976, 1978,1979, 1980, 1981, 1984, and 1986-1989. Additionally, calibration checks on the instrument have been performed routinely since 1962 with a set of standard lamps Results of the calibrations through 1987 have been described elsewhere in detail (Komhyr et al., 1989).

Anatomical constructions are the important point in creating a sculptural portrait. The academic school of modelling, as well as modernist tendencies can be tested in the work of Alexandru Plămădeală (1888—1940). A severe anatomical interpretation also characterized the creativity of Lazăr Dubinovschi (1910—1982). Already in a series of works, dedicated to colleagues in the workshop (1968—1979), Lazăr Dubinovschi realized the prevalence of the inner world in the portrait, which contributed to the modeling of the anatomical features of the portrayed people. Claudia Cobizev (1905—1995) went through a good school, which helped to update the anatomical structures in the female portrait. Dumitru Rusu-Scvorţov (1926—1991) is a good connoisseur of anatomy in sculptural portraits of famous people. Alexandra Picunov-Târţău (1928—2002) conveys the secrets of the images she creates through the laconicism of anatomical features in the portraits of her colleagues (1972—1981). Brunhilda Epelbaum-Marcenco (b. 1927) experiments with color in the portrait genre. The work of Yuri Kanashin (b. 1939) contains a whole range of modeling between realistic and stylized interpretation in portraits of great personalities. Sculptor Constantin C. Constantinov (b. 1943) introduces anatomical constructions in portraits of elderly people (1985—1989). Portraits of Dumitru Verdianu (b. 1954) contain, in addition to anatomical structures, both impressionist and modernist interpretations (1982—1989). The minimalism and conceptualism of Ion Bolocan (b. 1961) reduces anatomical constructions to external forms, displaced and extracted. Anatomical constructions have always contributed to lifelikeness and plastic expression in the portrait.

The feasibility of laying offshore pipelines in deep waters, to 3000 feet and beyond, has been established by theoretical studies by a number of different individuals and organizations over the past several years. These various theoretical studies are now being tested and refined as pipelines and production facilities are being installed in ever-deeper waters. A pipeline failure in these great depths would be intolerable, among other reasons because of the great difficulty and exorbitant expense of performing a deepwater repair. A thorough understanding of the buckling and collapse behavior of pipe is, therefore, becoming ever more critical as these oil and gas production facilities get progressively deeper. Recognizing a need for further research into the collapse behavior of pipe, Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. undertook in 1984 a three-phase program to develop a deeper understanding of basic pipe collapse phenomena. Phase I of this program (1984-1985) focused on the effects of imperfections on pipe collapse. This work was done in the laboratory of Professor Stelios Kyriakides at The University of Texas at Austin, and involved the testing of numerous small-scale steel and aluminum tubes. The Phase II program (1986-1987), also performed at The University of Texas, considered the effects of construction loads. The final Phase III program (1988-1989) was intended as a full-scale verification of the small-scale tests conducted in the previous two phases. This program was conducted at Stress Engineering Services in Houston under the direction of Dr. Joe Fowler, and consisted of Pure Collapse Tests of 16-inch Pipe (16 samples). Pressure vs. Tension Tests of 6 5/8-inch Pipe (18 samples), and Pressure vs. Bending Tests of 6 5/8-inch Pipe (18 samples).
