We show that the first principles of quantization and the experience of relativistic quantum mechanics can lead to the definition of observable time in quantum cosmology as a global quantity which coincides with the constrained action of the reduced theory up to the energy factor. The latter is fixed by the correspondence principle once one considers the limit of the “dust filled” Universe. The “global time” interpolates between the proper time for dust dominance and the conformal time for radiation dominance.

The three-machine flowshop scheduling problem to minimize total completion time is studied where setup times are treated as separate from processing times. Setup and processing times of all jobs on all machines are unknown variables before the actual occurrence of these times. The lower and upper bounds for setup and processing times of each job on each machine is the only information that is available. In such a scheduling environment, there may not exist a unique schedule that remains optimal for all possible realizations of setup and processing times. Therefore, it is desired to obtain a set of dominating schedules (which dominate all other schedules) if possible. The objective for such a scheduling environment is to reduce the size of dominating schedule set. We obtain global and local dominance relations for a three-machine flowshop scheduling problem. Furthermore, we illustrate the use of dominance relations by numerical examples and conduct computational experiments on randomly generated problems to measure the effectiveness of the developed dominance relations. The computational experiments show that the developed dominance relations are quite helpful in reducing the size of dominating schedules.

Ocular dominance (OD) has long served as the model for neural plasticity. The shift of OD has been demonstrated by monocular deprivation in animals only during early visual development. Here, for the first time, we show that perceptual eye dominance can be modulated in real time in normal human adults by varying the spatial image content of movies seen dichoptically by the two eyes over a period as short as 2.5 h. Unlike OD shifts seen in early visual development, this modulation in human eye dominance is not simply a consequence of reduced interocular correlation (e.g. synchronicity) or overall contrast energy, but due to the amplitude reductions of specific image components in one eye's view. The spatial properties driving this eye dominance change suggest that the underlying mechanism is binocular but not orientationally selective, therefore uniquely locating it to layer 4 B of area V1.

Travel time reliability is deemed as one of the most important factors affecting travelers’ route choice decisions. However, existing practices mostly consider average travel time only. This dissertation establishes a methodology framework to overcome such limitation. Semi-standard deviation is first proposed as the measure of reliability to quantify the risk under uncertain conditions on the network. This measure only accounts for travel times that exceed certain pre-specified benchmark, which offers a better behavioral interpretation and theoretical foundation than some currently used measures such as standard deviation and the probability of on-time arrival. Two path finding models are then developed by integrating both average travel time and semi-standard deviation. The single objective model tries to minimize the weighted sum of average travel time and semi-standard deviation, while the multi-objective model treats them as separate objectives and seeks to minimize them simultaneously. The multi-objective formulation is preferred to the single objective model, because it eliminates the need for prior knowledge of reliability ratios. It offers an additional benefit of providing multiple attractive paths for traveler’s further decision making. The sampling based approach using archived travel time data is applied to derive the path semi-standard deviation. The approach provides a nice workaround to the problem that there is no exact solution to analytically derive the measure. Through this process, the correlation structure can be implicitly accounted for while simultaneously avoiding the complicated link travel time distribution fitting and convolution process. Furthermore, the metaheuristic algorithm and stochastic dominance based approach are adapted to solve the proposed models. Both approaches address the issue where classical shortest path algorithms are not applicable due to non-additive semi-standard deviation. However, the stochastic dominance based approach is preferred because it is more computationally efficient and can always find the true optimal paths. In addition to semi-standard deviation, on-time arrival probability and scheduling delay measures are also investigated. Although these three measures share similar mathematical structures, they exhibit different behaviors in response to large deviations from the pre-specified travel time benchmark. Theoretical connections between these measures and the first three stochastic dominance rules are also established. This enables us to incorporate on-time arrival probability and scheduling delay measures into the methodology framework as well.

Antennas utilising a dielectric medium are technologies that have become popular in modern wireless platforms. They offer several desirable features such as high efficiency, electrically small and resistance to proximity detuning. Being a volumetric radiator however, realising a final, commercially competitive solution, often requires the use of a computational optimisation algorithm. In the realm of antenna design the practice of optimisation typically involves an automated routine consisting of a heuristic algorithm and a forward solving engine such as the finite element method (FEM) or finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The solving engine is used to derive a post-processed performance value typically referred to as an objective or fitness function, while the heuristic method uses the objective function data to determine the next trial solution or solutions that approach a design goal. Nowadays, commercially viable antenna platforms are not characterised by a single performance value, but rather, a series of objective functions that are often inherently conflicting. Thus, an increase in one objective function results in a decrease in another. The optimisation algorithm is therefore required to seek a solution dictated by the preferences of the designer. Classical literature dominantly featured preference articulation, a priori, where the set of objectives are transformed into a scalar using a predefined preference arrangement. Contemporary theory implements the articulation a posteriori, where the complete set of compromise solutions are sought by the optimisation algorithm. It is hypothesised that modern multi-objective optimisation (MOO) theory, using a posteriori preference articulation, can be more useful for contemporary antenna design. By treating the objectives as individual dimensions in a mathematical space, it allows for independent, simultaneous optimisation. At the time of writing this dissertation, all commercial simulation software that include an optimisation algorithm use a predefined preference to the performance criteria. Thus, where a large set of equally potential solutions exist, only one final solution is delivered. This thesis examines two novel dielectric antenna technologies and uses modern MOO theory to obtain new solutions that supersede their prototypes. Taking a commercial perspective by optimising the electromagnetic performance and the physical size of the antenna simultaneously, it is hypothesised this allows an unprecedented insight into the inherent tradeoffs of practical antenna configurations.

Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous traitons le problème de flow-shop à deux machines avec temps de transport où l’objectif consiste à minimiser le temps de complétion maximal. Dans un premier temps, nous nous sommes intéressés à la modélisation de ce problème. Nous avons proposé plusieurs programmes linéaires en nombres entiers. En particulier, nous avons introduit une formulation linéaire basée sur une généralisation non triviale du modèle d’affectation pour le cas où les durées des opérations sur une même machine sont identiques. Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons élargi la portée de ces formulations mathématiques pour développer plusieurs bornes inférieures et un algorithme exact basé sur la méthode de coupe et branchement (Branch-and-Cut). En effet, un ensemble d’inégalités valides a été considéré afin d’améliorer la relaxation linéaire de ces programmes et d’accélérer leur convergence. Ces inégalités sont basées sur la proposition de nouvelles règles de dominance et l’identification de sous-instances faciles à résoudre. L’identification de ces sous-instances revient à déterminer les cliques maximales dans un graphe d’intervalles. En plus des inégalités valides, la méthode exacte proposée inclut la considération d’une méthode heuristique et d’une procédure visant à élaguer les nœuds. Enfin, nous avons proposé un algorithme par séparation et évaluation (Branch-and-Bound) pour lequel, nous avons introduit des règles de dominance et une méthode heuristique basée sur la recherche locale. Nos expérimentations montrent l’efficacité de nos approches qui dominent celles de la littérature. Ces expérimentations ont été conduites sur plusieurs classes d’instances qui incluent celles de la littérature, ainsi que des nouvelles classes d’instances où les algorithmes de la littérature se sont montrés peu efficaces
In this thesis, we study the two-machine flow-shop problem with time delays in order to minimize the makespan. First, we propose a set of Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) formulations for the problem. In particular, we introduce a new compact mathematical formulation for the case where operations are identical per machine. The proposed mathematical formulations are then used to develop lower bounds and a branch-and-cut method. A set of valid inequalities is proposed in order to improve the linear relaxation of the MIPs. These inequalities are based on proposing new dominance rules and computing optimal solutions of polynomial-time-solvable sub-instances. These sub-instances are extracted by computing all maximal cliques on a particular Interval graph. In addition to the valid inequalities, the branch-and-cut method includes the consideration of a heuristic method and a node pruning procedure. Finally, we propose a branch-and-bound method. For which, we introduce a local search-based heuristic and dominance rules. Experiments were conducted on a variety of classes of instances including both literature and new proposed ones. These experiments show the efficiency of our approaches that outperform the leading methods published in the research literature

This thesis can be divided into two (unrelated) parts. The main part (Chapters 1 and 2) focus on addiction models that entail departures from the classical discounting utility model of Individual Intertemporal Choice: Habit-Formation and Self-Control problems. The other part (Chapter 3) studies the famous p-Beauty Contest Game when we restrict the individual’s choices to integer numbers. In the first part, habit formation is the key feature for a product being addictive: a habit is created when past consumption of the product increases current desire for consumption. An addiction can be either beneficial (when past consumption increases current utility, e.g. jogging) or harmful (when past consumption decreases current utility, e.g. drug consumption). In general one could conceive of harmful addictions as habit-forming activities that imply an immediate reward but generate future costs (negative internalities) whereas beneficial addictions imply an immediate cost but generate future rewards (positive internalities). Self-control problems are understood in terms of time inconsistency: they arise when the individual cannot keep up with an intended intertemporal plan of consumption. In Chapter 1 we analyse a (harmful) addiction model proposed by O'Donoghue and Rabin (O&R) for which they obtain a counterintuitive result: full awareness of selfcontrol problems may exacerbate over-consumption. We show that this result arises from their particular equilibrium selection for the induced intrapersonal game. We provide dominating Markov Perfect equilibria where the paradox vanishes and that seem more ''natural'' since they capture behaviours often observed in the realm of addiction. We also address the issue of why a person could decide to start consuming and possibly develop an addiction: contrary to O&R, and according to the common intuition, we show that naiveté is at the essence. In Chapter 2 we obtain an isomorphism between harmful and beneficial addictions in a discrete-time binary choice context (the model of the first chapter being a particular case of this context). The equivalence thus established allows us to study both phenomena (harmful and beneficial addictions) as two sides of the same coin. Besides the theoretical insight it provides, this dualism is also useful: in particular, it permits to readily translate the results obtained in the first chapter to the domain of beneficial addictions. Once the dualism is established, we analyse addictions under both timeconsistent and time-inconsistent preferences. In Chapter 3, we provide a full characterization of the pure-strategy Nash Equilibria for the p-Beauty Contest Game when we restrict individual's choices to integer numbers. Opposed to the case of real number choices, equilibrium uniqueness may be lost depending on the value of p and the number of players: in particular, as p approaches 1 any symmetric profile constitutes a Nash Equilibrium. We also show that any experimental p-Beauty Contest Game can be associated to a game with the integer restriction and thus multiplicity of equilibria becomes an issue. Finally, we show that in these games the iterated deletion of weakly dominated strategies may not lead to a single outcome while the iterated best-reply process always does (though the outcome obtained depends on the initial conditions).

Research examining bilinguals who stutter (BWS) is limited; in particular there are few studies that have considered examining features of speech motor control in BWS. The present study was designed to examine features of speech motor control in bilingual speakers of Mandarin and English. Speech motor control was examined through the acoustic analysis of speaking rate, voice onset time (VOT) and stuttering adaptation. Participants ranged from age between 9 and 27 years. Upon completion of a language dominance questionnaire, two BWS participants were found to be English dominant and three were Mandarin dominant. Each BWS participant was matched to age/sex matched control participants (BWNS). Results for the BWS participants found more stuttering in the less dominant language based on a measure of percentage of syllables stuttered. All of the BWS participants demonstrated stuttering adaptation and there was no significant difference in the amount of adaptation for Mandarin and English. There was no difference found between BWS and BWNS for speaking rate and VOT. In spite of the similarity between BWS and BWNS, speaking rate in Mandarin appeared to be faster compared to English. These findings suggest that speech motor control in BWS and BWNS are similar and current application of these findings to the clinical setting is discussed.

AbstractThe dominance of deposit money means commercial banks play a leading role in money creation. This chapter puts this situation in a historical context. The functioning of our financial monetary system and the role of banks have changed fundamentally over time. The chapter reveals that what we take for granted today was often far from self-evident yesterday. We focus on the Netherlands and discuss four periods in turn: (1) the ‘long nineteenth century’ up to the First World War, with an emphasis on the 1870−1914 period, (2) the interwar period (1918−1939), (3) the Bretton Woods period (1944−1973) and (4) the decades leading up to the latest financial crisis (1973−2008).

AbstractThe first chapter reflects on the nature of travelling as the paradigmatic form of human experience and its literary reflection in travel writings. In linking travels and experiences of human encounters, the chapter enquires into the relations between time and space by linking the historiographical traditions of travel writings on Asian spaces as readings of space across time with a critical analysis of the development of conceptualisations and inventions of Asian spaces. In addressing the analytical concepts of curiosity, identities, and knowledge, the chapter questions the dominance of an ideologically biased framework based on the Foucault–Saidian power–knowledge nexus that privileges the ideological assumption that imperialist appropriations of space are the human condition of travel writings. The chapter re-establishes curiosity as a human intellectual capacity at the centre of analysis to capture transnational space of encounters in which mutual curiosities complement the ideological claims for conquest through writing down encounters of difference.

In the task of preference learning, there can be natural invariance properties that one might often expect a method to satisfy. These include (i) invariance to scaling of a pair of alternatives, e.g., replacing a pair (a,b) by (2a,2b); and (ii) invariance to rescaling of features across all alternatives. Maximum margin learning approaches satisfy such invariance properties for pairs of test vectors, but not for the preference input pairs, i.e., scaling the inputs in a different way could result in a different preference relation. In this paper we define and analyse more cautious preference relations that are invariant to the scaling of features, or inputs, or both simultaneously; this leads to computational methods for testing dominance with respect to the induced relations, and for generating optimal solutions among a set of alternatives. In our experiments, we compare the relations and their associated optimality sets based on their decisiveness, computation time and cardinality of the optimal set. We also discuss connections with imprecise probability.

We show that the simple Z-scan technique1 can be extended to study the dynamics of optical nonlinearities by using a nondegenerate time-delay excite-probe geometry. In this scheme, we obtain information regarding the signs, magnitudes, lifetimes, and dispersions of both absorptive and refractive components of optical nonlinearities. Nondegenerate two-photon absorption in ZnSe and cross-phase modulation in ZnS and ZnSe are measured, and the results are shown to be in good agreement with those of the recent two-band model, which utilizes the nonlinear Kramers-Krönig transformation to relate nonlinear absorption to nonlinear refraction.2 The results for ZnSe, for example, show the dominance of the ultrafast bound electronic Kerr effect at small delays, while the long-lived and cumulative free carrier refraction dominates at longer delays. Using exact nonlinear wave propagation analysis, we can identify and measure degenerate and nondegenerate coefficients of two-photon absorption and n2. In addition, the picosecond dynamics of the free-carrier nonlinearities (absorption, band filling) can also be investigated.

З’ясовано, що третина образів майбутньої родини є незбалансованими, з домінуванням заплутано-хаотичного типу. Встановлено зв’язок перфекціонізму спрямованого на інших та соціально обумовленого перфекціонізму з окремими показниками образу майбутньої сім’ї. This article deals with the analyze of the female students’ perceptions of their parental family and their own future family systems. Author determines the balanced and extreme families. It was found that a third of all perceptions of the future family are extreme, with the dominance of chaotically engaged type. It is proved that there are significant differences between the perceptions of the parental family and their own future family. It was found that the most of the female students choose a model of mid-range family, like their parental families are. There is the statistically significant positive correlation between the index of socially prescribed perfectionism conformism and emotional bonding, emotional ties, family boundaries, decision making and family time. There is a significant negative correlation between other-oriented perfectionism, family flexibility, and discipline in the family and relationship rules.

Forced by the 1997 Southeast Asian crisis to recognize the external vulnerabilities that openness to volatile capital flows result in and upset over the post-crisis policy responses imposed by the IMF, countries in the sub-region saw the need for a regional financial safety net that can pre-empt or mitigate future crises. At the outset, the aim of the initiative, then led by Japan, was to create a facility or design a mechanism that was independent of the United States and the IMF, since the former was less concerned with vulnerabilities in Asia than it was in Latin America and that the latter’s recommendations proved damaging for countries in the region. But US opposition and inherited geopolitical tensions in the region blocked Japan’s initial proposal to establish an Asian Monetary Fund, a kind of regional IMF. As an alternative, the ASEAN+3 grouping (ASEAN members plus China, Japan and South Korea) opted for more flexible arrangements, at the core of which was a network of multilateral and bilateral central bank swap agreements. While central bank swap agreements have played a role in crisis management, the effort to make them the central instruments of a cooperatively established regional safety net, the Chiang Mai Initiative, failed. During the crises of 2008 and 2020 countries covered by the Initiative chose not to rely on the facility, preferring to turn to multilateral institutions such as the ADB, World Bank and IMF or enter into bilateral agreements within and outside the region for assistance. The fundamental problem was that because of an effort to appease the US and the IMF and the use of the IMF as a foil against the dominance of a regional power like Japan, the regional arrangement was not a real alternative to traditional sources of balance of payments support. In particular, access to significant financial assistance under the arrangement required a country to be supported first by an IMF program and be subject to the IMF’s conditions and surveillance. The failure of the multilateral effort meant that a specifically Asian safety net independent of the US and the IMF had to be one constructed by a regional power involving support for a network of bilateral agreements. Japan was the first regional power to seek to build such a network through it post-1997 Miyazawa Initiative. But its own complex relationship with the US meant that its intervention could not be sustained, more so because of the crisis that engulfed Japan in 1990. But the prospect of regional independence in crisis resolution has revived with the rise of China as a regional and global power. This time both economics and China’s independence from the US seem to improve prospects of successful regional cooperation to address financial vulnerability. A history of tensions between China and its neighbours and the fear of Chinese dominance may yet lead to one more failure. But, as of now, the Belt and Road Initiative, China’s support for a large number of bilateral swap arrangements and its participation in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership seem to suggest that Asian countries may finally come into their own.

Heterosis, the enigmatic phenomenon in which whole genome heterozygous hybrids demonstrate superior fitness compared to their homozygous parents, is the main cornerstone of modern crop plant breeding. One explanation for this non-additive inheritance of hybrids is interaction of alleles within the same locus. This proposal aims at screening, identifying and investigating heterosis trait loci (HTL) for different yield traits by implementing a novel integrated mapping approach in Sorghum bicolor as a model for other crop plants. Originally, the general goal of this research was to perform a genetic dissection of heterosis in a diallel built from a set of Sorghum bicolor inbred lines. This was conducted by implementing a novel computational algorithm which aims at associating between specific heterozygosity found among hybrids with heterotic variation for different agronomic traits. The initial goals of the research are: (i) Perform genotype by sequencing (GBS) of the founder lines (ii) To evaluate the heterotic variation found in the diallel by performing field trails and measurements in the field (iii) To perform QTL analysis for identifying heterotic trait loci (HTL) (iv) to validate candidate HTL by testing the quantitative mode of inheritance in F2 populations, and (v) To identify candidate HTL in NAM founder lines and fine map these loci by test-cross selected RIL derived from these founders. The genetic mapping was initially achieved with app. 100 SSR markers, and later the founder lines were genotyped by sequencing. In addition to the original proposed research we have added two additional populations that were utilized to further develop the HTL mapping approach; (1) A diallel of budding yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) that was tested for heterosis of doubling time, and (2) a recombinant inbred line population of Sorghum bicolor that allowed testing in the field and in more depth the contribution of heterosis to plant height, as well as to achieve novel simulation for predicting dominant and additive effects in tightly linked loci on pseudooverdominance. There are several conclusions relevant to crop plants in general and to sorghum breeding and biology in particular: (i) heterosis for reproductive (1), vegetative (2) and metabolic phenotypes is predominantly achieved via dominance complementation. (ii) most loci that seems to be inherited as overdominant are in fact achieving superior phenotype of the heterozygous due to linkage in repulsion, namely by pseudooverdominant mechanism. Our computer simulations show that such repulsion linkage could influence QTL detection and estimation of effect in segregating populations. (iii) A new height QTL (qHT7.1) was identified near the genomic region harboring the known auxin transporter Dw3 in sorghum, and its genetic dissection in RIL population demonstrated that it affects both the upper and lower parts of the plant, whereas Dw3 affects only the part below the flag leaf. (iv) HTL mapping for grain nitrogen content in sorghum grains has identified several candidate genes that regulate this trait, including several putative nitrate transporters and a transcription factor belonging to the no-apical meristem (NAC)-like large gene family. This activity was combined with another BARD-funded project in which several de-novo mutants in this gene were identified for functional analysis.

Lake Arakhley is located within the Lake Baikal basin in Eastern Siberia, Russia. The area is characterized by continental subarctic climate with considerate diurnal temperature range, long cold dry winters and short hot summers with more precipitation occurring during the latter half of the summer. Climatic shifts in high water years and low water years result in morphometric changes in the lake and in the chemical and physical parameters of the ecosystem. During low water years, concentrations of ammonium nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen are decreased, whereas nitrate concentration increases. High water years feature average concentrations of ammonium ions 1.5–2 times higher than the values of recent dry years. Redundancy analysis (RDA) of abiotic factors and biotic community indicated that the community structure shows the greatest correlation with physical and chemical parameters of water and biogenic elements (nitrites, ammonium, phosphates) along the first axis, and with the lake depth and transparency along the second axis. Changes in abiotic factors induce functioning and formation of characteristic communities of the primary producers in the trophic structure of the ecosystem. During low water years, with increased level of autochthonous organic matter, Lindavia comta dominance is observed, while during high water years, with increased allochthonous organic matter Asterionella formosa appeared as dominant. Currently, during low water years, the hydrophytes community is monodominant and composed of Ceratophyllum demersum. Meanwhile, such species indicating eutrophic conditions as Myriophyllum sibiricum, Potamogeton pectinatus are found in the lake vegetation.

The BARD program includes two main parts. In the first, experiments were conducted to complete our understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the impairment of reproductive functions under heat stress. Experiments focused on follicular development and function, since results obtained in our previous BARD project indicate that the preovulatory follicle is susceptible to heat stress. The theca cells, sensitive to thermal stress, produced less androgen during the summer, as well as during the autumn. Similarly, luteinized theca cells obtained from cows in summer produced much less progesterone than in winter. Granulosa cells and luteinized granulosa cells were less susceptible to heat stress. A delayed effect of heat stress on follicular development, on suppression of dominance and on steroid production by theca and granulosa cells was noted. This may be related to the low fertility of cows during the cool months of autumn. In the second part, experiments were conducted aiming to improve fertility in summer. The timed AI program was developed using two injections of GnRH coupled with PGF2a. It was found effective in improving reproductive performance in lactating cows. Limitations induced by heat stress on estrus detection were eliminated with the timed AI management program. Replacing the second injection of GnRH with hCG instead of GnRH agonist increased plasma progesterone levels post ovulation but did not improve fertility. Use of the timed AI program in summer, shortened days open and increased the net revenue per cow, however, it did not protect the embryo fiom temperature-induced embryonic mortality. Incorporation of a GnRH-agonist implant into the timed AJ program was examined. The implant increased plasma progesterone and LH concentrations and altered follicular dynamics. The use of a GnRH-implant enhanced pregnancy rate in cows with low body conditions. In a timed embryo transfer experiment, the use of fresh or frozen in vitro produced embryos was compared in the summer to improve fertility. The use of flesh embryos (but not frozen ones) improved pregnancy rate, however, substantial embryonic death occurred between 21 and 45 days. The timed AI program, which is now being used commercially, shortened days open, and increased pregnancy rate during summer. Other approaches which were found to improve fertility in small-scale studies, need to be tested again in large-scale field trials.

This article provides an overview of financing for long-term services and supports (LTSS) in the United States, paying special attention to how it has changed and not changed over the last 30 years. Although LTSS expenditures have increased greatly (like the rest of health care), the broad outline of the financing system has remained remarkably constant. Medicaid—a means-tested program—continues to dominate LTSS financing, while private long-term care insurance plays a minor role. High out-of-pocket costs and spend-down to Medicaid because of those high costs continue to be hallmarks of the system. Although many major LTSS financing reform proposals were introduced over this period, none was enacted—except the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports Act, which was repealed before implementation because of concerns about adverse selection. The one major change during this time period has been the very large increase in Medicare spending for post-acute services, such as short-term skilled nursing facility and home health care. With the aging of the population, demand for LTSS is likely to increase, placing strain on the existing system.

The Southeast Coast Network (SECN) conducts long-term terrestrial vegetation monitoring as part of the nationwide Inventory and Monitoring Program of the National Park Service (NPS). The vegetation community vital sign is one of the primary-tier resources identified by SECN park managers, and it is currently conducted at 15 network parks (DeVivo et al. 2008). Monitoring plants and their associated communities over time allows for targeted understanding of ecosystems within the SECN geography, which provides managers information about the degree of change within their parks’ natural vegetation. 2020 marks the first year of conducting this monitoring effort at Cumberland Island National Seashore (CUIS). Fifty-six vegetation plots were established throughout the park from May through July. Data collected in each plot included species richness across multiple spatial scales, species-specific cover and constancy, species-specific woody stem seedling/sapling counts and adult tree (greater than 10 centimeters [3.9 inches {in}]) diameter at breast height (DBH), overall tree health, landform, soil, observed disturbance, and woody biomass (i.e., fuel load) estimates. This report summarizes the baseline (year 1) terrestrial vegetation data collected at Cumberland Island National Seashore in 2020. Data were stratified across three dominant broadly defined habitats within the park, including Coastal Plain Upland Open Woodlands, Maritime Open Upland Grasslands, and Maritime Upland Forests and Shrublands. Noteworthy findings include: 213 vascular plant taxa (species or lower) were observed across 56 vegetation plots, including 12 species not previously documented within the park. The most frequently encountered species in each broadly defined habitat included: Coastal Plain Upland Open Woodlands: longleaf + pond pine (Pinus palustris; P. serotina), redbay (Persea borbonia), saw palmetto (Serenoa repens), wax-myrtle (Morella cerifera), deerberry (Vaccinium stamineum), variable panicgrass (Dichanthelium commutatum), and hemlock rosette grass (Dichanthelium portoricense). Maritime Open Upland Grasslands: wax-myrtle, saw greenbrier (Smilax auriculata), sea oats (Uniola paniculata), and other forbs and graminoids. Maritime Upland Forests and Shrublands: live oak (Quercus virginiana), redbay, saw palmetto, muscadine (Muscadinia rotundifolia), and Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) Two non-native species, Chinaberry (Melia azedarach) and bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum), categorized as invasive by the Georgia Exotic Pest Plant Council (GA-EPPC 2018) were encountered in four different Maritime Upland Forest and Shrubland plots during this monitoring effort. Six vascular plant species listed as rare and tracked by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GADNR 2022) were observed in these monitoring plots, including the state listed “Rare” Florida swampprivet (Forestiera segregata var. segregata) and sandywoods sedge (Carex dasycarpa) and the “Unusual” green fly orchid (Epidendrum conopseum). Longleaf and pond pine were the most dominant species within the tree stratum of Coastal Plain Upland Open Woodland habitat types; live oak was the most dominant species of Maritime Upland Forest and Shrubland types. Saw palmetto and rusty staggerbush (Lyonia ferruginea) dominated the sapling stratum within Maritime Upland Forest and Shrubland habitat types. Of the 20 tree-sized redbay trees measured during this monitoring effort only three were living and these were observed with severely declining vigor, indicating the prevalence and recent historical impact of laurel wilt disease (LWD) across the island’s maritime forest ecosystems. There was an unexpectedly low abundance of sweet grass (Muhlenbergia sericea) and saltmeadow cordgrass (Spartina patens) within interdune swale plots of Maritime Open Upland habitats on the island, which could be a result of grazing activity by feral horses. Анотація:
One of the well-known results of the theory of management is the fact, that multi-stage hierarchical organization of management is unstable. Hence, the ideas expressed in a number of works by Don Tapscott on advantages of network organization of businesses over vertically integrated ones is clear. While studying the basic tendencies of business organization in the conditions of globalization, computerization and internetization of the society and the results of the financial activities of the well-known companies, the authors arrive at the conclusion, that such companies, as IBM, Boeing, Mercedes-Benz and some others companies have not been engaged in their traditional business for a long time. Their partner networks performs this function instead of them. The companies themselves perform the function of system integrators. The Tapscott’s idea finds its confirmation within the framework of a new powerful direction of the development of the modern interdisciplinary science – the theory of the complex networks (CN) [2]. CN-s are multifractal objects, the loss of multifractality being the indicator of the system transition from more complex state into more simple state. We tested the multifractal properties of the data using the wavelet transform modulus maxima approach in order to analyze scaling properties of our company. Comparative analysis of the singularity spectrumf(®), namely, the difference between maximum and minimum values of ® (∆ = ®max ¡ ®min) shows that IBM company is considerably more fractal in comparison with Apple Computer. Really, for it the value of ∆ is equal to 0.3, while for the vertically integrated company Apple it only makes 0.06 – 5 times less. The comparison of other companies shows that this dependence is of general character. Taking into consideration the fact that network organization of business has become dominant in the last 5-10 years, we carried out research for the selected companies in the earliest possible period of time which was determined by the availability of data in the Internet, or by historically later beginning of stock trade of computer companies. A singularity spectrum of the first group of companies turned out to be considerably narrower, or shifted toward the smaller values of ® in the pre-network period. The latter means that dynamic series were antipersistant. That is, these companies‘ management was rigidly controlled while the impact of market mechanisms was minimized. In the second group of companies if even the situation did changed it did not change for the better. In addition, we discuss applications to the construction of portfolios of stock that have a stable ratio of risk to return.

The article focuses on the «Intellectual Dark Web», an informal group of scholars, publicists, and activists who openly opposed the identity politics, political correctness, and the dominance of leftist ideas in American intellectual life. The author examines the reasons for the emergence of this group, names the main representatives and finds that the existence of «dark intellectuals» is the evidence of important problems in US public discourse. The term «Intellectual Dark Web» was coined by businessman Eric Weinstein to describe those who openly opposed restrictions on freedom of speech by the state or certain groups on the grounds of avoiding discrimination and hate speech. Extensive discussion of the phenomenon of «dark intellectuals» began after the publication of Barry Weiss’s article «Meet the renegades from the «Intellectual Dark Web» in The New York Times in 2018. The author writes of «dark intellectuals» as an informal group of «rebellious thinkers, academic apostates, and media personalities» who felt isolated from traditional channels of communication and therefore built their own alternative platforms to discuss awkward topics that were often taboo in the mainstream media. One of the most prominent members of this group, Canadian clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson, publicly opposed the C-16 Act in September 2016, which the Canadian government aimed to implement initiatives that would prevent discrimination against transgender people. Peterson called it a direct interference with the right to freedom of speech and the introduction of state censorship. Other members of the group had a similar experience that their views were not accepted in the scientific or media sphere. The existence of the «Intellectual Dark Web» indicates the problem of political polarization and the reduction of the ability to find a compromise in the American intellectual sphere and in American society as a whole.
