The present article aims to critically observe and interpret the methodological deficiencies as found in randomly selected 14 doctoral theses submitted to two different universities in India. Despite their serious deviation from the expected methodological standards, all those theses were accepted and approved by the universities and scholars concerned conferred with PhD degrees. Undoubtedly, those theses kept in the reference sections at the respective university libraries would potentially misguide and mislead the future researchers. Some of the common technical deficiencies, as have been noticed, include (1) absence of careful thoughts in framing research titles, (ii) biased method of data collection, (ii) absence of logical explanation in favour of sample size and sample selection process, (iii) designing and execution of instrument for data collection, (iv) theory formulation in terms of framing of objectives, hypotheses and operational definitions etc. The article attempts to present the critical observations on case-to-case basis so that their conceptual, instrumental and procedural deficiencies and deviations are easily understood by the academicians, researchers and students. The content of this article is divided in to three broad sections. The first section deals with an introduction to quantitative and qualitative research methods and their advantages and limitations. The next section deals with the review of the selected theses followed by conclusion and suggested remedial measures. The objective of this article is purely academic and its scope is limited to enhancement of quality of future research studies in the domains and related fields.

AbstractThis article presents the results of a simulation, testing the variation of main bearing loads and strains in crankshafts caused by geometrical deviations of the bearing system to justify the necessity and purposefulness of measurements of both the shape and axes position deviations of crankshaft journals. Measurements of these deviations at the existing level of applied measuring techniques are significantly limited. The research also accentuates the practical implementation of a measuring system equipped with the so-called flexible support system for the measured object, developed at the Maritime University of Szczecin. This system makes it possible to eliminate elastic deformations of the crankshaft due to its own weight, whereby the measurements of geometrical deformations of the crankshafts can be carried out with appropriate accuracy in conditions corresponding to the non-reference measurements when determining the object measured in counterpoints. The obtained results have fully confirmed the purposefulness of the conducted research and the validity of the theses.

The article is devoted to the concept of advanced legal effect, targets of legal prognosis, such as scientific prognostication of dynamics of legal conditions, optimal legal effect on social and politic processes, avoidance of possible deviations. Elements of juridical prognosis are determined: borders and contents of perspective legal regulation, means of correlation of social development processes and their legal reverberation. Theses correlation could help to ascertain cause-and-effect relations in the legal system, dynamics of legal regulations in national and international law, dynamics of statutes and functions of subjects of law, legal risks. All these elements would stimulate minimizing of negative consequences. Methods of prognostication and a range of criteria for an estimation of results are also considered in the article.

A rich literature on ‘populism’ and ‘religion’ has flourished in the preceding decade. Following a now consensual vision of ‘populism’ as ‘anti-pluralism’, scholars such as Cas Mudde, Daniel Steinmetz-Jenkins, and Duncan McDonnell have homed in on how populists weaponize religious themes and live off the decline of organized religiosity. This paper revisits these theses through a re-examination of the first self-declared populist movement in history, the American People’s Party of the late nineteenth century and two of its most prominent political personalities – Georgia Populist Thomas E. Watson and Boston radical Benjamin O. Flower. Both Watson and Flower were convinced Methodists all their lives and saw Populist farming associations in the 1890s as a natural extension of previous church networks. After the movement’s defeat in 1896, however, both remodulated their Methodism for specific ends: anti-Catholicism, opposition to Protestant missionary efforts, anti-vaccination sentiment and, in case of Watson, aggressive anti-Semitism. Rather than seeing these instances as deviations from a populist creed, this paper investigates how Flower and Watson’s Populism saw the crisis of American Methodism as part of a broader republican decline, and how this insight can inform contemporary discussion on the interrelation between populism, pluralism, democracy, and religion.

Introduction. This paper considers madness as a metahistorical category of culture as well as an excluded language in Western European culture that exists despite the language code. To determine the status of madness in the contemporary philosophy the author analyses the way it functions in the discourse of “the other”. Theoretical analysis. The exclusion of madness from the context of philosophical research occurred due to such various markers changing from era to era as a lie, delusion, nonsense, buffoonery, and finally the dysfunction of the mind completed by Pinel’s reform. The definition of madness as a forbidden language comes from two theses: 1) mental disorders result from biological, not socio-psychological problems; 2) madness and a mental disorder are not two different configurations, they have organic nature that is to be neutralized in terms of pharmacology and defined in terms of behavioral deviations, and that excludes subjective and nonphysical suffering. Conclusion. The research relevance is obvious because modern aesthetics and philosophy with the cultural model of insanity as a core concept need further elaborating. The duality of the subject of psychiatry concerning the human personality implies that this component must be taken into account apart from exclusively natural-scientific studies.

Appropriate supplier selection is important in success of every manufacturing industry. Improper supplier selection causes an adverse impact on functioning and development of any organization. Evaluating available suppliers and selecting most suitable supplier is very important task of procurement management. Theses selection problems can be solve using decision making methods. These methods are used to find most preferred alternative from given set of alternatives based on different attributes. The aim of the present work is to select raw material supplier for cold-rolled mild steel manufacturing industry using selected three decision making methods such as complex proportional assessment, operational competiveness rating analysis and preference selection index, etc. The selection is made among five suppliers based on five attributes viz: performance rating, productivity, yield, cost and lead time. The analytical hhierarchy process is used for determining weight of the attributes based on relative importance of each attribute which can have a great impact on the final solution. It is found from the ranks obtained using selected three methods that supplier S1 is best and supplier S5 is worst among the others alternatives. It is also observed that the rankings of suppliers has some deviations in the rankings due to different mathematical approaches used in these three selected methods. The proposed methods help to evaluate and rank different raw material suppliers for manufacturing industries.

In the US, writing centers have a long history at institutions of higher learning. Often housed in individual colleges, writing centers function to help both undergraduate and graduate students develop their writing skills and become more confident, independent writers. Assistance, which is typically offered by students who are themselves seasoned writers, takes form in both face-to-face and online tutoring sessions, and can focus on tenets of writing ranging from general skills (e.g., outlining, drafting, organization) to discipline- or genre-specific assignments (e.g., theses, reports, presentations). In recent years, efforts have been made to transfer the writing center culture across the pond; success stories have popped up in a wide range of European countries. Yet several contexts have yet to be investigated. The purpose of this study was to examine the challenges of establishing a writing center at the Department of Teacher Education (Institutt for lærerutdanning) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). In autumn 2019, 43 pre-service second-year students taking a course on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) were obligated to make one appointment with the writing center to discuss drafts of a paper for a required assignment. Afterwards, they completed a survey detailing the experience of their visit. Results revealed that while students on the whole benefited from the sessions to discuss their writing, the students hinted at several cultural deviations that have the potential to hobble efforts of establishing a writing center. Instructional implications are discussed.

В статье рассматриваются экономические последствия демографического старения. Обосновывается актуальность данной темы. Исследовательской проблемой данной статьи является оценка силы влияния демографического старения на финансовое состояние пенсионной системы в мире. Проводится проверка тезисов «макроэкономики старения» относительно финансового состояния пенсионных систем при увеличении доли лиц старше трудоспособного возраста. Проведен географический анализ отклонений места стран в рейтинге достаточности пенсионного дохода и рейтинге Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index от места стран в рейтинге демографического старения. В качестве информационной базы используется рейтинг достаточности пенсионного дохода по 48 странам, рейтинг Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index по 25 странам и разработанный ООН коэффициент демографической нагрузки пожилыми. Сделан вывод об отсутствии значимой корреляции старения населения, с одной стороны, и финансового состояния пенсионных систем, с другой. Дополнительно сделан вывод, что существует определенная зависимость между силой влияния демографического старения и экономикогеографическим регионом. Дается возможное теоретическое обоснование ошибочности тезисов «макроэкономики старения». Рассмотрены недемографические факторы влияния на финансовое состояние пенсионных систем. This article discusses the economic consequences of demographic aging. The relevance of this topic is substantiated. The research problem of this article is to assess the strength of the influence of demographic aging on the financial condition of the pension system in the world. Abstracts of the «macroeconomics of aging» theses are reviewed with respect to the financial condition of pension systems with an increase in the share of people over working age. A geographical analysis of deviations of the place of countries in the rating of sufficiency of retirement income and the rating of the Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index from the place of countries in the ranking of demographic aging is carried out. The retirement income sufficiency rating for 48 countries, the Melbourne Mercer Global Pension Index rating for 25 countries and the UN developed Old age dependency ratio (OADR) are used as the information base. It is concluded that there is no significant correlation between the aging of the population on the one hand and the financial condition of pension systems on the other. Additionally, it was concluded that there is a certain pattern between the strength of the influence of demographic aging and the economic and geographical region. A possible theoretical justification of the thesis of the thesis «macroeconomics of aging» is given. Non-demographic factors of influence on the financial condition of pension systems are considered.

Language is a powerful weapon that expresses the culture of a given people. The study entitled: ‘Language and Tiv Cultural Practices in Adan-Wade Kohol Ga’ clearly looks at linguistic and cultural resources that Suemo Chia discusses in his novel. This study explores aspects of language and examines cultural elements in the novel under study. This study used Benjamin Lee Whorf’s Whorfian Hypothesis or Linguistic Relativity which was propounded in 1956. He theorised that the structure of our native language determines our perception or cosmology. Methodologically, this study used primary and documentary sources. The primary is Adan-Wade Kohol Ga and secondary sources are books, articles, dictionaries and theses. As for the data presentation, the researcher read, extracted relevant linguistic and cultural elements, transcribed and analysed. It has been discovered that Adan-Wade Kohol Ga is novel of growth – bildungsroman. It is also a historical novel that discusses Tiv traditional belief system. It has been found out that the novel under discussion has graphological, phonological, syntactic and semantic deviations. It has also been learnt that Tiv borrowed certain cultural practices from other tribes. The novel has linguistic and cultural archaisms. It has been recommended that the younger generation should study their indigenous literatures so as to understand the culture of their people. Young people should also learn their own languages; hence language defines individuals. Lecturers should recommend indigenous literatures to the students of Languages and Linguistics, Cultural Studies, Literature in English and English Language to read, analyse and translate.

This study aimed to study quality of theses of master education program in teaching science and mathematics, Mahasarakham University, Thailand which conducted and published during 2016-2019. A 37 theses were studied through systematic approach. Data were collected by 24 questionnaires of theses analysis anecdotal. Mean, standard deviation, and percentage were employed. Results showed that most of thesis focus on action research due to the school contexts. Teaching strategies or innovation which employed are problem-based learning, inquiry-based learning, STEM education and other trending approaches. All of informants or samples are studying in high school level. Overall of quality of thesis can be considered in at good level. The finding is useful for program development and shaping research area for graduate students in the future.

In this thesis we study the problem of computing probability distribution of rare events on disordered systems, i.e. systems made up of heterogeneous interacting agents, using tools from statistical physics. We explore several areas of statistical physics, from traditional subjects such as the random field Ising model to random walkers on graphs to more recent developments such as systemic risk in financial networks, using simple models to explore how interactions and network structure shape the occurrence of rare events, and how these rare events in turn shape our macroscopic perceptions. We present exact analytical results using generating functional methods when possible, and propose approximations where needed, and we compare our results with simulations. Finally, we discuss how our models can be modified and extended to answer new questions.

Consider an iterated function system (IFS) that does not necessarily contract uniformly, but instead contracts on average after a finite number of iterations. Under some technical assumptions, previous work by Barnsley, Demko, Elton and Geronimo has shown that such an IFS has a unique invariant probability measure, whilst many (such as Peigné, Hennion and Hervé, Guivarc'h and le Page, Santos and Walkden) have shown that (for different function spaces) the transfer operator associated with the IFS is quasi-compact. A result due to Keller and Liverani allows one to deduce whether the transfer operator remains quasi-compact under suitable, small perturbations. The first part of this thesis proves a large deviations result for IFSs that contract on average using skew product transfer operators, a technique used by Broise to prove a similar result for dynamical systems. The remaining chapters introduce a notion of 'coupled IFSs', an analogue of the traditional coupled map lattices where the base, unperturbed behaviour is determined by an underlying dynamical system. We use transfer operators and Keller and Liverani's theorem to prove that quasi-compactness of the transfer operator is preserved for 'product IFSs' under small perturbations and for coupled IFSs. This allows us to prove a central limit theorem with a rate of convergence for the coupled IFS.

In this work, we propose an approach to detect and capture undesirable and unexpected process parameter variations in a circuit post-fabrication. We rely on delay measurable paths to detect deviations in path delays post-fabrication. We propose an algorithm to isolate suspect gates along failed paths using fault free delay measurable paths. Compact data structures like ZBDDs are used to store and manipulate paths. Experimental analysis using the proposed algorithm provides statistics of isolated gates along paths in various benchmark circuits. Further, we propose an algorithmic model that analyzes the suspect gates based on their topology along a path and reports the process parameter deviation for each such suspect gate.

The effects of the collision of a Near-Earth-Object(NEO) with the Earth could be catastrophic on a local, regional or global scale depending on the size of the NEO. Therefore, there is considerable interest in determining ways to mitigate the threat posed by these objects. This dissertation presents a method utilizing a tethered ballast mass for altering the trajectory of a NEO with an Earth-intersecting orbit so that it avoids hitting the Earth. The method is simulated using four different methods. The first method assumes a rigid massless tether. Using this method, a parametric study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the technique over a wide parametric space. Specifically, this study provided results in terms of deviation rates over the parametric space. After this, the massless inelastic method was used to study actual miss distances assuming the asteroid was on a collision course with the Earth. After this, a study was conducted, using the massless, inelastic model, in which the mass of the ballast was made constant, in order to determine the minimum tether length required to divert asteroids simulated based on actual asteroids from NASA's potentially hazardous asteroid (PHA) database, again assuming a massless inelastic tether. Finally, it was desired to determine how relaxing the constraints of the massless inelastic model would affect system performance. Therefore, three more models were introduced: massive inelastic, massless elastic, and massive elastic. Using these models, a study was performed to explore the effects of the changed model on system performance and to compare the results in terms of deviation, with those of the massless inelastic model. This was desired because the numerical cost of the new models was much higher than that of the massless inelastic model, so rather than conduct the study over a much larger parametric space, a smaller space was chosen, so that the results could be compared.

Stochastic programming offers a way to treat uncertainty in decision problems. In particular, it allows the minimization of risk. We consider mean-risk models involving deviation measures, as for instance the standard deviation and the semideviation, and discuss these risk measures in the framework of stochastic dominance as well as in the framework of coherent risk measures. We derive statements concerning the structure and the stability of the resulting optimization problems whereby we emphasize on models including integrality requirements on some decision variables. Then we propose decomposition algorithms for the mean-risk models under consideration and present numerical results for two stochastic programming applications.

Neoliberalism is typically associated with the commoditization and flexibilization of the labor market and a project of deregulation. In constructing responsibility between the employees and employer, deviations from the “standard employment relationship” (SER) indicate the neoliberal thrust. However, this study reveals a growing body of state-led regulation of one such deviation—mediated employment through temp-work agencies and subcontractors. The body of regulations, a source of social action, derives from collective bargaining, extension decrees, judicial decisions, and formal regulation by statutes and executive action. The chapter critically examines two interpretations of these legal developments: one that refutes the claim that neoliberalism dissolved the state’s responsibility, as evidenced by the ever-growing safety net; and another which claims that regulation is merely a token correction of dualism and fragmentation in the labor market.

This chapter sets some aspects of the new resolution mechanism against the international financial sector standards that have emerged over the past decade. The harmonized resolution framework fostered by the Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive (BRRD) will significantly improve resolution capacity and may be as far as we can go without making amendments. Nevertheless, there are a number of deviations from the best practices identified in the relevant standards. The chapter discusses some of these deviations, such as the likely dominance of national representatives on the Single Resolution Mechanism (SRM) Board and the European Council power to modify and/or turn down a resolution proposed by the Board which may lead to divergences across Member States, and to possible inconsistencies with the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM).

Abstract Egypt in the early Byzantine period was a bilingual country where Greek and Egyptian (Coptic) were used alongside each other. Historical studies along with linguistic studies of the phonology and lexicon of early Byzantine Greek in Egypt testify to this situation. In order to describe the linguistic traces the language-contact situation left behind in individuals’ linguistic output, this study analyses the syntax of early Byzantine Greek texts from Egypt. The primary object of interest is bilingual interference in the syntax of verbs, adverbial phrases, and clause linkage as well as in semi-formulaic expressions and formulaic frames. The study is based on a corpus of Greek and Coptic private letters on papyrus, which date from the fourth to mid-seventh centuries, originate from Egypt, and belong to bilingual, Greek-Coptic, papyrus archives. The study shows that deviations from the standard pattern fall into three categories, i.e. bilingual interference, SLA-related errors, and internal confusion of patterns. There is a marked difference as to the extent to which deviations, and interferences in particular, affect syntactic domains. The degree of complexity of the syntactic structure in question as well as the degree of divergence from the corresponding Coptic structure seem to play a role. There is also a marked difference as to the extent to which deviations affect different types of contexts (i.e. free, semi-formulaic, and formulaic contexts). The degree to which constraints are imposed on structures in each type of context seems to play a role. Finally, it appears that the way writers assimilated patterns can explain a large number of deviations. Interferences account proportionately for fewest deviations vis-à-vis SLA-related errors and the internal confusion of patterns.

The book also examines the explicit computation of the proportionality deviation of a complex surface for finite covers of the complex projective plane ramified along certain line arrangements. Candidates for ball quotients among these finite covers arise by choosing weights on the line arrangements such that the proportionality deviation vanishes.

AbstractDeviations between nominal and actual tolerances are a challenging problem during turning processes of thin-walled workpieces. One main cause of these deviations is the clamping force applied by the turning chuck to hold the workpiece. Due to the low stiffness of thin-walled workpieces, large workpiece deformations can occur even when clamping forces are low. For this reason, the clamping force needs to be precisely adjusted. A possible approach are chucks with integrated actuators. As a result of the more direct power transmission, these chucks have a potentially higher clamping force accuracy compared to conventional external actuation. However, integrated actuators are additional heart sources resulting in thermal loads and thermally induced deformations of the chuck components. Due to the resulting mechanical distortion of the chuck system, the precise adjustment of clamping forces is not possible. Thus, this paper evaluates the thermally induced clamping force deviations on a novel turning chuck with four integrated electric drives. A test bench is used to analyse both a single drive and the combination of all four drives regarding the temperature effect on the clamping force adjustability. A clamping force deviation of up to 26% is observed. Based on the measured chuck temperature, a compensation method is introduced leading to a clamping force accuracy of 96.9%.

AbstractFoam Additive Manufacturing (FAM) is the additive manufacturing process allowing parts to be obtained by depositing layers of polyurethane foam using a high-pressure machine. This inexpensive technology allows large parts to be produced in a reduced time. However, the quality of the parts produced by the FAM technique is greatly affected by the various thermal phenomena present during manufacturing and by the geometrical deviations of the layers due to the expansion of the PU foam. Numerical simulation remains an effective analytical tool for studying these phenomena. The aim of this work is to build a geometric and thermal model predictive of the FAM process by the finite element method, the final objective of which is to provide temperature maps throughout the manufacturing process and also to choose the best 3D printing strategy to have a model with constant cords and the smallest possible form deviation. The proposed model and the various simulation techniques used are detailed in this article. This model is developed under the finite element code Rem3D, and validated by experimental tests carried out on a FAM machinery or a robot, an example of which is detailed in this article.

AbstractA safety verification task involves verifying a system against a desired safety property under certain assumptions about the environment. However, these environmental assumptions may occasionally be violated due to modeling errors or faults. Ideally, the system guarantees its critical properties even under some of these violations, i.e., the system is robust against environmental deviations. This paper proposes a notion of robustness as an explicit, first-class property of a transition system that captures how robust it is against possible deviations in the environment. We modeled deviations as a set of transitions that may be added to the original environment. Our robustness notion then describes the safety envelope of this system, i.e., it captures all sets of extra environment transitions for which the system still guarantees a desired property. We show that being able to explicitly reason about robustness enables new types of system analysis and design tasks beyond the common verification problem stated above. We demonstrate the application of our framework on case studies involving a radiation therapy interface, an electronic voting machine, a fare collection protocol, and a medical pump device.

AbstractThis paper presents and investigates a cyber-physical fabrication workflow, which can respond to the deviations between built- and designed form in real-time with vision augmentation. We apply this method for large scale structures built from natural bamboo poles. Raw bamboo poles obtain evolutionarily optimized fibrous layouts ideally suitable for lightweight and sustainable building construction. Nevertheless, their intrinsically imprecise geometries pose a challenge for reliable, automated construction processes. Despite recent digital advancements, building with bamboo poles is still a labor-intensive task and restricted to building typologies where accuracy is of minor importance. The integration of structural bamboo poles with other building layers is often limited by tolerance issues at the interfaces, especially for large scale structures where deviations accumulate incrementally. To address these challenges, an adaptive fabrication process is developed, in which existing deviations can be compensated by changing the geometry of subsequent joints to iteratively correct the pose of further elements. A vision-based sensing system is employed to three-dimensionally scan the bamboo elements before and during construction. Computer vision algorithms are used to process and interpret the sensory data. The updated conditions are streamed to the computational model which computes tailor-made bending stiff joint geometries that can then be directly fabricated on-the-fly. In this paper, we contextualize our research and investigate the performance domains of the proposed workflow through initial fabrication tests. Several application scenarios are further proposed for full scale vision-augmented bamboo construction systems.

AbstractAn important practical capability of conformance checking is that organizations can use it to alleviate potential deviations from the intended process behavior. However, existing techniques only identify these deviations, but do not provide insights on potential explanations, which could help to improve the process. In this paper, we present attribute-based conformance diagnosis (ABCD), a novel approach for correlating process conformance with trace attributes. ABCD builds on existing conformance checking techniques and uses machine learning techniques to find trace attribute values that potentially impact the process conformance. It creates a regression tree to identify those attribute combinations that correlate with higher or lower trace fitness. We evaluate the explanatory power, computational efficiency, and generated insights of ABCD based on publicly available event logs. The evaluation shows that ABCD can find correlations of trace attribute combinations with higher or lower fitness in a sufficiently efficient way, although computation time increases for larger log sizes.

AbstractTeachers wishing to offer lessons in nature may hold back for fear of leaving students keyed up and unable to concentrate in subsequent, indoor lessons. This study tested the hypothesis that lessons in nature have positive—not negative—aftereffects on subsequent classroom engagement. Using carefully matched pairs of lessons (one in a relatively natural outdoor setting and one indoors), we observed subsequent classroom engagement during an indoor instructional period, replicating these comparisons over 10 different topics and weeks in the school year, in each of two third grade classrooms. Pairs were roughly balanced in how often the outdoor lesson preceded or followed the classroom lesson. Classroom engagement was significantly better after lessons in nature than after their matched counterparts for four of the five measures developed for this study. This nature advantage held for teacher ratings; third-party tallies of ‘redirects’ (the number of times the teacher stopped instruction to direct student attention back to the task at hand); independent, photo-based ratings made blind to condition; and a composite index of classroom engagement, but not for student ratings. The nature advantage held across different teachers and held equally over the initial and final five weeks of lessons. The nature advantage was large: after a lesson in nature, ‘redirects’ were roughly half as frequent, allowing teachers to teach for longer periods uninterrupted. In 48 out of 100 paired comparisons, the nature lesson was a full standard deviation better than its classroom counterpart; in 20 of the 48, the nature lesson was over two standard deviations better. Because the pairs of lessons were matched on teacher, class (students and classroom), topic, teaching style, week of the semester, and time of day, the advantage of the nature-based lessons could not be attributed to any of these factors. It appears that, far from leaving students too keyed up to concentrate afterward, lessons in nature may leave students more able to engage in the next lesson. Such “refueling in flight” argues for including more lessons in nature in formal education.

AbstractSupply chain issues arising from market turbulences force companies to find new solutions in the short term. Hence, deviations from the ideally designed business processes are inevitable, especially during production planning and control. These deviations result in unforeseen process variants. In addition, process steps of those process variants are often not completely conducted with IT systems and are therefore difficult to trace. Another underlying problem lies in the bias of performance measurement of process variants because each variant aligns with different goals and framework conditions. For these and other reasons, the performance management of process variants presents a challenge. To overcome this challenge, a serious game is being further developed in a research project. The goal is to provide trainings for performance management in a turbulent business environment with the serious game. It simulates the business processes and supply chain issues of a drilling machine manufacturer and serves as a use case for the research presented in this paper. The challenges associated with the performance management of unforeseeable business process variants are derived from the use case. A gap analysis is conducted between the challenges and existing requirements for the development of performance management systems. Based on this, adjustments are proposed to existing requirements and new requirements are being developed.

AbstractThe current stochastic model in GNSS processing is constructed based on the prior experience, for example the ratio of the weight of the pseudorange and phase observations is generally determined as 1:10000. These methods ignore the precision differences of the different GNSS receivers and observation space. In this paper, the standard deviation of differenced ionosphere-free pseudorange and phase observations is computed with dual-frequency observations and then the weight ratio of the pseudorange and phase observations is obtained using the computed standard deviation. This method is introduced in satellite clock estimating and the data is processed. The results show that the presented method is feasible, with which the accuracy of the estimated satellite clock results is improved. The estimated satellite clock results are further adopted in PPP and the positioning results of the 10 users validate that the estimated satellite clock, which uses the presented method, can accelerate the convergence of PPP compared with the traditional method.

AbstractMedication non-adherence is a prevalent, complex problem. Failure to follow medication schedules may lead to major health complications, which could reduce quality of life. Proper medication adherence is thus required in order to gain the greatest possible drug benefit during a patient’s treatment. Interventions have been proven to improve medication adherence if deviations are detected. This review focuses on recent advances in the field of technology-based medication adherence approaches and pays particular attention to their technical monitoring aspects. The taxonomy space of this review spans multiple techniques including sensor systems, proximity sensing, vision systems, and combinations of these. As each technique has unique advantages and limitations, this work describes their trade-offs in accuracy, energy consumption, acceptability and user’s comfort, and user authentication.

AbstractThe deviation of the tool center point (TCP) of a machine tool from its desired location needs to be assessed correctly to ensure an accurate and safe operation of the machine. A major source of TCP deviation are thermal loads, which are constantly changing during operation. Numerical simulation models help predicting these loads, but are typically large and expensive to solve. Especially in (real-time feedback) control settings, but also to ensure an efficient design phase of machine tools, it is inevitable to use compact reduced-order surrogate models which approximate the behavior of the original system but are much less computationally expensive to evaluate. Model order reduction (MOR) methods generate computationally efficient surrogates. Classic intrusive methods require explicit access to the assembled system matrices. However, commercial software packages, which are typically used for the design of machine tools, do not always allow an unrestricted access to the required matrices. Non-intrusive data-driven methods compute surrogates requiring only input and output data of a dynamical system and are therefore independent of the discretization method. We evaluate the performance of such data-driven approaches to compute cheap-to-evaluate surrogate models of machine tools and compare their efficacy to intrusive MOR strategies. A focus is put on modeling the machine tool via individual substructures, which can be reduced independently of each other.

Norms describe the social architecture of a society and govern the interactions of its member agents. It may be appropriate for an agent to deviate from a norm; the deviation being indicative of a specialized norm applying under a specific context. Existing approaches for norm emergence assume simplified interactions wherein deviations are negatively sanctioned. We investigate via simulation the benefits of enriched interactions where deviating agents share selected elements of their contexts. We find that as a result (1) the norms are learned better with fewer sanctions, indicating improved social cohesion; and (2) the agents are better able to satisfy their individual goals. These results are robust under societies of varying sizes and characteristics reflecting pragmatic, considerate, and selfish agents.

The core is a well-known and fundamental notion of stability in games intended to model coalition formation such as hedonic games. The fact that the number of deviating agents (that have to coordinate themselves) can be arbitrarily high, and the fact that agents may benefit only by a tiny amount from their deviation (while they could incur in a cost for deviating), suggest that the core is not able to suitably model many practical scenarios in large and highly distributed multi-agent systems. For this reason, we consider relaxed core stable outcomes where the notion of permissible deviations is modified along two orthogonal directions: the former takes into account the size of the deviating coalition, and the latter the amount of utility gain for each member of the deviating coalition. These changes result in two different notions of stability, namely, the q-size core and k-improvement core. We investigate these concepts of stability in fractional hedonic games, that is a well-known subclass of hedonic games for which core stable outcomes are not guaranteed to exist and it is computationally hard to decide nonemptiness of the core. Interestingly, the considered relaxed notions of core also possess the appealing property of recovering, in some notable cases, the convergence, the existence and the possibility of computing stable solutions in polynomial time.

Understanding the exact details of deviation zone related to a manufactured surface needs measurement of infinite number of points. Coordinate metrology provides deviation of the limited number of discrete points on a measured surface, but typically it is not capable to explore any information of the surface regions between these measured points. An approach to estimate the Distribution of Geometric Deviations (DGD) on the entire inspected surface is presented in this paper. The methodology is developed based on estimation of mean value property of the harmonic functions and Laplace equation. The resulting DGD model can be employed to estimate the deviation values at any unmeasured point of the inspected surface when a detailed understanding of the surface geometric deviations is required. Implementation of the developed methodology is described and case studies for typical industrial parts are presented. This methodology can be used for closed-loop of inspection and manufacturing processes when a compensation scheme is available to compensate the manufacturing errors based on the DGD model.

Monitoring algorithms analyzing measured gas path variables provide invaluable insight into gas turbine operating health. Some useful information about a gas turbine and its measurement system can be obtained from a direct analysis of raw measurements. To draw more comprehensive diagnostic information, deviations are usually calculated as discrepancies between the measured and baseline values of monitored variables. The deviations can serve as good indicators of different engine degradation mechanisms. However, there are many negative factors that tend to mask degradation effects. For a long period of time we have analyzed quality of gas path measurement data and a deviation accuracy problem of a gas turbine power plant driving a natural gas pipeline compressor. Possible error sources were examined and some methods were proposed to improve the accuracy of deviation calculations. This paper looks at maintenance data of another object, the General Electric LM2500 gas turbine used as a drive of an electric generator. The data cover prolonged periods of axial compressor fouling with washings between them, and provide valuable information for a deviation examination. In order to reduce deviation errors, the paper considers different cases of the abnormal functioning of the sensors and baseline model inadequacy and proposes measures to avoid them. As a result of these and previous efforts, the deviations have become good fouling indicators. They are capable to quantify the increase of exhaust gas temperature (EGT) and, consequently, to improve planning axial compressor washings.

One of the principle purposes of gas turbine diagnostics is the estimation and monitoring of important unmeasured quantities such as engine thrust, shaft power, and engine component efficiencies. There are simple methods that allow computing the unmeasured parameters using measured variables and gas turbine thermodynamics. However, these parameters are not good diagnostic indices because they strongly depend on engine operating conditions but in a less degree are influenced by engine degradation and faults. In the case of measured gas path variables, deviations between measurements and an engine steady state baseline were found to be good indicators of engine health. In this paper, the deviation computation and monitoring are extended to the unmeasured parameters. To verify this idea, the deviations of compressor and turbine efficiencies as well as a high pressure turbine inlet temperature are examined. Deviation computations were performed at steady states for both baseline and faulty engine conditions using a nonlinear thermodynamic model and real data. These computational experiments validate the utility of the deviations of unmeasured variables for gas turbine monitoring and diagnostics. The thermodynamic model is used in this paper only to generate data, and the proposed algorithm for computing the deviations of unmeasured parameter can be considered to be a data-driven technique. This is why the algorithm is not affected by inaccuracies of a physics-based model, is not exigent to computer resources, and can be used in on-line monitoring systems.

Closed Chain Mechanisms are popular in Automation Technology for transmitting motion under specific objective task. Single-Degree of Freedom (DoF) Four-bar chain is basic mechanisms synthesized for such applications. Joint clearances and drive backlash are inevitable in such mechanisms and introduce error in coupler positions while accomplishing the task. The present paper considers effect of joint clearances and drive backlash as error source for coupler positions in single-DoF mechanism. The deviations of desired positions and actual positions are estimated for specific objective task. Further, effect of these error sources is modelled with a higher-DoF mechanism which is kinematically better than single-DoF mechanisms. Two-DoF mechanism is modelled for identical objective task. Maximum positional deviations are estimated for two-DoF mechanism. The comparative analysis of deviation is obtained. Relative maximum positional deviation in both mechanisms is expressed in terms of dimensionless number as measure of performance.

The paper proposes a method for evaluating the reliability of models for estimating the energy losses in the blade rows of axial turbines, based on the statistical analysis of the experimental data deviation from the calculated. It was shown that these deviations are subject to the normal distribution law and can be described by mathematical expectations μΔξ and standard deviation σΔξ. The values of profile losses were calculated by five well-known models for 170 different axial turbines cascades, representing the diversity of turbines used in aircraft gas turbine engines. The findings were compared with experimental data. Comparison results were subjected to statistical analysis. It was found that the best model to describe the profile losses in axial turbines is model that has been developed in Central Institute of Aviation Motors (Russia). It allows the calculation of profile losses deviating from the actual values of losses by −8±84% with a probability of 95%. Taking into account the mentioned statistical criteria, a new equation was proposed based on the analysis of the profile losses nature and using mathematical optimization techniques. This equation makes possible to define the profile loss of axial turbine more accurate than the investigated models. It allows the calculation of profile loss values in the axial turbine that differ from the actual value by 10±61% with a probability of 95%. The proposed new equation takes into account more geometric and operational factors affecting the value of losses.

This paper describes the modelling of axial compressor blade rows in an axisymmetric viscous throughflow method. The basic method, which has been reported before, includes the effects of spanwise mixing, using a turbulent diffusion model, and endwall shear within the throughflow calculation. The blades are modelled using a combination of existing two-dimensional blade performance predictions for loss and deviation away from the annulus walls and a novel approach using tangential blade forces in the endwall regions. Relatively simple assumptions about the behaviour of the tangential static pressure force imposed by the blades allow the secondary deviations produced by tip clearance flows and the boundary layer flows at fixed blade ends to be calculated in the axisymmetric model. Additional losses are assigned in these regions based on the calculated deviations. The resulting method gives realistic radial distributions of loss and deviation across the whole span at both design and off-design operating conditions providing a quick method of estimating the magnitudes of these effects in the preliminary design process. Results from the method are compared to measured data in low and high speed compressors and multistage three-dimensional viscous CFD predictions.

The exact detailed knowledge of deviation zone in a manufactured surface needs measurement of infinite number of points when the coordinate metrology is utilized. The coordinate metrology process provides deviation of the limited number of discrete points on a measured surface, but typically the process is not capable to explore any information of the surface regions between these measured points. A Finite Element approach for Deviation Zone Evaluation (DZE) on the entire inspected surface is presented in this paper. The developed DZE solution estimates the deviation values at any unmeasured point of the inspected surface when a detailed understanding of the surface geometric deviations is required. Implementation of the developed methodology is described and case study for typical industrial parts is presented. This methodology can be used for closed-loop of inspection and manufacturing processes when a compensation scheme is available to compensate the manufacturing errors based on the DZE data.

Abstract Settings for generation of spiral bevel gear and pinion are determined in such a manner that the conjugate action in the gear pair is improved during their meshing. Any error in these settings would result in a deviation from the desired surface. Therefore, it is important to identify the critical settings and exercise greater care in their settings. In the present work, simulation of the generation process is carried out and the surfaces obtained are represented with reference to an idealized surface namely the involute spiraloid, established from first principle. The deviations of the surface resulting from the changes in the setting are also presented conveniently as normal deviations. From these results, the critical setting values are identified and are reported in this paper.

Economists recognize that results from simulation models are dependent, sometimes highly dependent, on values employed for critical exogenous variables. To account for this, analysts sometimes conduct sensitivity analysis with respect to key exogenous variables. This paper presents a practical approach for conducting systematic sensitivity analysis, called Gaussian quadrature. The approach views key exogenous variables as random variables with associated distributions. It produces estimates of means and standard deviations of model results while requiring a limited number of solves of the model. Under mild conditions, all of which hold with respect to the GTAP model, there is strong reason to believe that the estimates of means and standard deviations will be quite accurate.

This paper studies school choice and information in the context of education markets in rural Haiti. Using a market level randomized control trial, we evaluate the aggregate effect of providing test score information on subsequent test scores, prices, and enrollment. After the intervention, we find that private schools have higher test scores, with an average increase of 0.3 standard deviations in treated markets. However, we are unable to detect significant changes to prices and market shares. These findings suggest that providing information in poor education markets can improve market efficiency and benefit children's welfare.

Over 400 billion passenger vehicle trajectory waypoints are collected each month in the United States. This data creates many new opportunities for agencies to assess operational characteristics of roadways for more agile management of resources. This study compared traffic counts obtained from 24 Indiana Department of Transportation traffic counts stations with counts derived by the vehicle trajectories during the same periods. These stations were geographically distributed throughout Indiana with 13 locations on interstates and 11 locations on state or US roads. A Wednesday and a Saturday in January, August, and September 2020 are analyzed. The results show that the analyzed interstates had an average penetration of 4.3% with a standard deviation of 1.0. The non-interstate roads had an average penetration of 5.0% with a standard deviation of 1.36. These penetration levels suggest that connected vehicle data can provide a valuable data source for developing scalable roadway performance measures. Since all agencies currently have a highway monitoring system using fixed infrastructure, this paper concludes by recommending agencies integrate a connected vehicle penetration monitoring program into their traditional highway count station program to monitor the growing penetration of connected cars and trucks.

In the past 20 years, much research has been conducted into buckling and collapse of pipelines under external pressure, bending or tension and combinations. Also many finite element analyses have been performed into the behavior of pipelines under these loads. The available test results show considerable scatter, which is considered to be caused by variations in the stress-strain relationship, the anisotropy of the steel, the Bauschinger effect, the geometrical deviations, the residual stresses, the test conditions, etc. The manufacturing method (seamless, UO, UOE) has a considerable influence on these properties and on the collapse and local buckling resistance. In this project, design formulations for collapse and buckling with appropriate safety factors, calibrated against experimental and numerical models using probabilistic methods, have been selected for a practical range of design considerations. The project consisted of three parts: experiments, probabilistic calculations, and finite element calculations.

About 2 billion children were affected by school closures globally at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This has led to documented learning losses while children were out of school, and an especially precarious future academic path for pupils in developing countries where learning and continued enrolment remain important issues. There is an urgent need to understand the extent of these learning and enrolment losses, and possible policy options to get children back on track. This paper studies the extent of learning losses and recovery in Africa's most populous country, Nigeria, and provides some evidence that a full recovery is possible. Using data from a random sample of schools, we find significant learning losses of about .6 standard deviations in English and Math. However, a program designed to slow down the curriculum and cover what was missed during school closures led to a rebound within 2 months, and a recovery of all learning losses. Students who were a part of the program do not lag behind one year later and remain in school.

Magnetometers are sensors that measure the magnitude and direction of a magnetic field. There are many types of magnetometers available, but they all rely on electromagnetic principles to measure fields. The most common types are Hall effect, anisotropic magneto-resistive (AMR) and fluxgate sensors. The goal of this study is to investigate several magnetometers to evaluate their capability to detect small changes in an ambient field. These small changes are on the order of 10 milligauss (1 �T) and are caused by the inverse-magnetostrictive effect, or Villari effect, from ferromagnetic pipes. The chosen magnetometer must have a low noise signal and a fine resolution to properly measure the field from the inverse-magnetostrictive effect. To evaluate the chosen magnetometers, multiple sets of measurements were made in a stationary magnetic field and the standard deviation of the data sets were calculated. The noise of some sensors was further investigated to verify that it was normally distributed.

Public expenditures on non-contributory pensions are equivalent to at least 1 percent of GDP in several countries in Latin America and is expected to increase. We explore the effect of non-contributory pensions on the well-being of the beneficiary population by studying the "Pensiones Alimentarias" program established by law in Paraguay, which targets older adults living in poverty. Households with a beneficiary increased their level of consumption by 44 percent. The program improved subjective well-being in 0.48 standard deviations. These effects are consistent with the findings of Bando, Galiani and Gertler (2020) and Galiani, Gertler and Bando (2016) in their studies on the non-contributory pension schemes in Peru and Mexico. Thus, we conclude that the effects of non-contributory pensions on well-being in Paraguay are comparable to those found for Peru and Mexico and add to the construction of external validity.

The main objectives were (1) to develop, implement and validate control procedures that would make it possible to maintain year-round air temperature and humidity at levels suitable for crop cultivation in greenhouses operating in arid and semi-arid regions and (2) to investigate the influence of the operational flexibility of the fogging system on the performance of the system. With respect to the development of climate controllers, we developed a new control approach according to which ventilation is used to maintain the enthalpy of the greenhouse air and fogging is used to adjust the humidity ratio inside the greenhouse. This approach is suitable mostly for greenhouses equipped with mechanized ventilation, and in which the air exchange rate can be controlled with enough confidence. The development and initial validation of the controllers were performed in a small experimental greenhouses located at the Agricultural Research Organization and very good tracking were obtained for both air temperature and relative humidity (maximum mean deviations over a 10-min period with constant setpoints lower than 2.5oC and 5% relative humidity). The robust design approach used to develop the controllers made it possible to transfer successfully these controllers to a much larger semi-commercial greenhouse located in the much drier Arava region. After only minimal adjustments, which did not require lengthy dedicated experiments, satisfactory tracking of the temperature and humidity was achieved, with standard deviation of the tracking error lower than 1oC and 5% for temperature and relative humidity, respectively. These results should help promote the acceptance of modern techniques for designing greenhouse climate controllers, especially since given the large variety of greenhouse structures (shape, size, crop system), developing high performance site-specific controllers for each greenhouse is not feasible. In parallel to this work, a new cooling control strategy, which considers the contribution of humidification and cooling from the crop, was developed for greenhouses equipped with natural ventilation. Prior to the development of the cooling strategy itself, three evapotranspiration models were compared in terms of accuracy and reliability. The cooling strategy that has been developed controls the amount of fog introduced into the greenhouse as well as the percentage of vent openings based on the desired vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and enthalpy, respectively. Numerical simulations were used to compare the performance of the new strategy with a constant fogging rate strategy based on VPD, and on average, the new strategy saved 36% water and consumed 30% less electric energy. In addition, smaller air temperature and relative humidity fluctuations were achieved when using the new strategy. Finally, it was demonstrated that dynamically varying the fog rate and properly selecting the number of nozzles, yields additional water and electricity savings.
