Анотація:

―Margaret Atwood‘s Divided Self‖ explores four novels by celebrated Canadian author, Margaret Atwood: Lady Oracle, Surfacing, Alias Grace, and The Robber Bride. Although others have discussed the reoccurring themes of disunity and duality in Atwood‘s work, these explorations have not addressed some of her newest novels and have taken a very limited approach to reading and understanding Atwood‘s theme of the divided self. This study opens up a literary ―conversation‖ about Atwood‘s theme of the divided self by examining the protagonists of these select novels by using different branches of theory and thought to fully explore this issue. To conquer their double or multiple identities Atwood‘s protagonists in these novels must take two actions: 1) Accept their double/multiple identities as a part of themselves and 2) transcend this position and the resulting ―hauntings‖ by their mothers (or their decision to choose a replacement female ―mother‖ figure) by becoming mothers themselves. The introduction chapter ―The Author as ‗Slippery Double‘‖ explores Atwood‘s position as a ―slippery (divided) subject‖ between her writing/social and interior selves. Chapter one, ―Canadian Women: Nature, Place, and the Divided Other in Atwood‘s Works‖ explores the role of nature, place, and femininity in Atwood‘s divided protagonists. Chapter two, ―The Uncanny Double: Haunting Entities and the Divided Self in Atwood‘s Fiction‖ contains the main argument and explores the role of the uncanny in Atwood‘s works. Although I explore these four novels most thoroughly explored, this theme runs throughout Atwood‘s entire body of work. Although I mostly use close readings of the primary texts, I also ground my argument in the work of theorists in several fields of thought including Sigmund Freud, Louis Althusser, George H. Mead, and Jacques Lacan.

While previous research has extensively examined the effect of acute stress on cognitive performance, relatively little research has explored the relationship between chronic stress and cognitive performance. The current study aimed to control for current state anxiety to better isolate more chronic stress, when examining the relationship with performance on divided attention tasks. Fifty-four university undergraduates, who self-reported a wide range of perceived chronic stress (10-item Perceived Stress Scale), completed the Trail-Making Test and a dual (auditory and visual) Continuous Performance Test (CPT). Hierarchical regressions were performed to explore cognitive predictors of chronic perceived stress. After covarying for state anxiety (state portion of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory), the most statistically significant predictor (via stepwise entry) was the auditory omission error change score (dual minus single condition), which showed a medium effect size (r = .36). Results have practical safety implications, as the implementation of an efficient and inexpensive measure of self-reported stress may predict future job-related errors in high-stress professions that require divided attention.

Authors often explore the details of identity and body politics through their writing. Czech author Milan Kundera’s novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being deals heavily with the marginalized and oppressed body, considering how such bodies function, how they perceive themselves, how they are perceived by others, and how such bodies are, by nature, a defiance of an established hegemony. The novel considers the exiled body and how such exile can deliver freedom, cause further marginalization, or craft an ambivalent mixture of the two. The oppressed and marginalized body, as understood through literature, acts not just as a mirror of society but also as an avenue for navigating a subject as dense as identity and body politics.

Анотація:

A self-consistent model of laminated composites was constructed. In the model, macroscopic and microscopic stress and strain were divided into two parts, one was In-plane part and the other was Out-of-plane part, then the stiffness and compliance matrices could be partitioned. By using the definitions of macroscopic stress and strain and perfect interface condition, one could get the analytical expressions of macroscopic stiffness and compliance of two-layer composites. Macroscopic stiffness and compliance of multilayer composites could be gotten based on the analytical expressions. The reciprocal property of the stiffness and compliance matrices could be proved by numerical tests and theoretical analysis.

Aim/Purpose: In adolescents’ cyberethics education, case-based discussion, debate and role-playing are commonly used instructional strategies to engage students in critical dialogues in an open setting. However, the open setting is entirely different from the private and individual environment when adolescents go online. Teachers are in a position of higher power and peers’ observation provokes certain level of peer pressure. Students may not truly express their attitudes in the process for self-reflection. Background: This study elaborated an instructional strategy with a pressure-free self-assessment exercise that aimed to enhance adolescents’ self-knowledge and self-awareness regarding their attitudes on cyberethics. Methodology: The instructional strategy was divided into two phases. The purpose of the first phase was to enable students to obtain background knowledge on cyberethics. The second phase, with a pressure-free self-assessment element, aimed to enhance students’ self-knowledge and self-awareness on cyberethics. The study was carried out in a subsidized secondary school in Hong Kong. A total of 28 students at secondary three level participated in this study. Contribution: In theoretical perspective, the researcher suggested an adolescents’ cyberethics framework with dimensions of information security, privacy, intellectual property and netiquette. To nurture adolescents’ cyberethics, this study emphasized the importance of including theories of self-presentation, self-knowledge and self-awareness in the area of social psychology into cyberethics education. Findings: Students considered that the self-assessment exercise enabled self-reflection and enhanced self-knowledge on their attitudes of cyberethics. They also found it more effective for self-reflection compared with commonly used strategies and they will be more aware of cyberethics in their future online activities. Recommendations for Practitioners : Education practitioners are recommended to include a pressure-free self-assessment exercise to enhance the teaching effectiveness of cyberethics education. Recommendation for Researchers: This study opens avenues for further investigations of adolescents’ cyberethics with consideration of adolescents’ cognitive, psychological, social and emotional factors. Impact on Society : It is expected that the attitudes and behaviors of digital citizens can be improved by using this instructional strategy in cyberethics education. Future Research: Researcher could explore how different developmental factors affect adolescents’ decision-making on various issues of cyberethics.

Анотація:

A nonlinear mathematical model is developed for studying the self-loosening behavior of preloaded countersunk threaded fasteners that are subjected to cyclic transverse loads. This paper investigates the effect of thread and bearing friction coefficients on the rate of loosening. Torque components acting on the bolt are divided into pitch and resistance torque components; the net torque determines whether or not the bolt will rotate loose under the external excitation. The accumulation of the differential amount of loosening rotation increments is converted into gradual loss of bolt tension/clamp load. Model prediction of the self-loosening behavior is experimentally validated.

As part of the Stolen Generation, and born at the dawn of the formal Aboriginal Rights Movement, this lecture outlines the changing social attitudes through the eyes of the lived experience and the evolving national policy framework that has sought to manage, then heal, the wounds that divided a nation. Aspirations of self-determination, assimilation and reconciliation are investigated to unpack the intent versus the outcome, and why the deep challenges not only still exist, but in some locations the divide is growing. The Kimberley is an Aboriginal rights location of global relevance with Noonkanbah at the beating heart. The Kimberley now has 93 percent of the land determined through Native Title yet the Kimberley is home to extreme disadvantage, abuse and hopelessness. Our government agencies are working “nine-to-five” but our youth, by their own declaration, are committing suicide out of official government hours. The theme of the Kimberley underpins this lecture. This is the journey of a man that was of two worlds but now walks with the story of five - the child of the Bibilmum Noongar language group and the boy that was stolen. The man that became a policy leader and the father of a Yawuru-Bibilmum-Noongar family and the proud great-grandson that finally saw the recognition of the courageous act of saving fifty shipwrecked survivors in 1876.

This study aimed to assess the impact of interacting with two infotainment systems, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, on four driver performance measures: reaction time, driving behaviour, eyes-off road and self-reported performance. It also compared the results with other forms of driver impairment studied previously. Twenty regular Android users took part in the Android Auto trial and 20 regular Apple users took part in the Apple CarPlay trial. Each participant completed three 20 minute drives in TRL’s DigiCar simulator: control (no interaction with infotainment system), voice enabled and touch enabled. The route was divided into sections and participants performed music, navigation, texting and calling tasks at specific times during the drive. Compared with the control drive, participants in both trials showed a reduction in average speed, increase in deviation of headway and larger deviation of lane position for most tasks; this effect was greater when using touch features than voice features. Eye gaze measures indicated that participants did not meet the NHTSA criteria for most of the tasks when using touch controls for both systems, but they met the criteria when using voice control. Self-reported data suggested that participants found interacting through touch to be more difficult and distracting than voice. Most critically, reaction time to a stimulus on the road ahead was significantly higher when selecting music through Spotify when using Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Participants also failed to react more to the stimulus on the road ahead when engaging with either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay compared with a control drive. Comparison with previous driver impairment studies showed that the increase in reaction time when interacting with either system using touch was higher than previously measured forms of impairment, including texting and hand-held calls.
