Kata kunci: Dialek Melayu, dialek Melayu Thai, Geographic Information System (GIS), isoglos, varian fonologi ABSTRACT Traditional dialect studies in Malaysia have widely been explored. These studies managed to group all the phonological variants which produce various Malay dialects in Malaysia. Then there were progresses in terms of producing isoglosses which were drew impressionistically on the maps in the studies of geographical dialects. However, there were gaps in the dialect studies for some time before the dialect studies with Geographic Information System (GIS) application was introduced. This technology-based study has the ability to produce isogloss maps using the overlay technique and choropleth marking for the sound variants precisely. This article aims to explain the influence for the dissemination of Thai Malay dialects by applying GIS. This study involves the states of Perlis, Kedah Langkawi, Penang and Perak. This multidisciplinary study explains how non-linguistics factors such as geography, migration and history as well as linguistics factors shape the distribution of the Malay dialects in the northern Peninsular Malaysia in particular. More than a thousand respondents were involved who were divided into three age categories namely, the elderly (50 and older), adults (26-49 years) and adolescents (15-25 years). Respondents were interviewed and required to answer questionnaires. Forty (40) word lists related to respondents' lives were selected. The result shows that there is a widespread of Thai Malay dialects in Malaysia. Interestingly, the dialects are not only the Patani dialect but also the Satun dialect especially in Langkawi and Perlis. GIS application has not only been able to accurately reproduce isoglosses but have proven that non-linguistic factors are additional factors that explained the reasons for dialects to disseminate in an area. This article aims to show how to understand a language phenomenon through the language play of the Thai. The data is based on Tamjai (2003): Mechanisms and Patterns of Reversed Speech in Bangkok Thai, Northern Thai, Northeastern Thai, and Southern Thai Dialects. There are 334 utterances used to analyze the status of /-w-/ The Thai speakers of three dialects, Bangkok Thai, Northern Thai, and Southern Thai dialect speakers, interpreted the status of /-w-/ in five different types when reversed the utterances. Firstly, the second phoneme of an initial cluster: /-w-/ Secondly, the single phoneme of an initial consonant: /w/ Thirdly, the property of vowel: /u/ Fourthly, the vowel: /u/. Finally, the zero: /Ø/ The results according to McMahon (1994) about the stages of sound change. Moreover, the status of /-w-/ from reversing the utterances show how the sound changed from Proto South-Western Tai to Modern Tai; Yuan, Lao, and Siamese.

Over the past twenty five years the study of Thai dialects has concentrated on the geographical variatio.n of either tones or lexical items. In the 1990s another type of Thai dialect study began to take shape - a combination. of geographical and social variation study. Age has been identified as the main factor influencing variation in Thai dialects. The new type of study has so far concentrated on lexical variation. This paper deals with both geographical and social variation and both lexical and tonal variation. The Thai variety investigated in this study is that of Southern Thai spoken on Samui Island in Sural Thani province. The areas covered are the seven subdistricts of the Samui Island district. Two parallel studies were undertaken culminating in two MA. theses. Research planning and data collection in these two studies were carried out jointly. Results show that there is no geographical variation in Samui Thai either in tonal or lexical usage. When considering social variation, however, this study confirms that age plays a very important role. It clearly influences lexical variation in Samui Thai but it does not influence tonal variation. While the 60-70 years old speakers still use Southern Thai and Samui Thai lexical items and tones, the 10-20 years old speakers readily adopt Standard Thai lexical items but they still use the same tone system and tonal characteristics as the 60-70 years old speakers. It is suggested that future studies should investigate age-based tonal and lexical variation in Standard Thai and Thai dialects further to obtain a better picture of the process of ongoing change in Thai.

Thailand has main four dialects spoken as the mother tongue in each region. This article will explore how the Northern dialect is used in Chiang Mai. The data was collected from the daily conversation at four public places: local markets, shopping malls, public transportation, and university cafeterias. The mixed method is the sample's non-participation observation and unstructured interview in the four research areas. The research concept is sociocultural linguistics. The research findings disclose that the local people still speak the Northern dialect in public places in the Chiang Mai centre. It is also found that they use the Northern dialect interspersed with the Bangkok language. The topics of conversation were food, travel, costume, study, entertainment, and sports. These issues were related to the place. All places found a large number of Bangkok language speakers. The findings also imply that the Northern dialect has less used than Bangkok in shopping malls and universities. Chiang Mai is an important tourist city, so people all over the country visit or move to this city with their different languages. It would appear in linguistic phenomena of code-mixing or code-switching between the Northern and Bangkok languages in this area, which should be a different research topic.

This study investigates linguistic variation in a case of dialect change and maintenance, for a Northern (NT) Thai dialect in a Northern Industrial Estate (NTIE) of Thailand, in Lamphun province. The target area is the Ban Klang Municipal (MBK) community where locals use the NT Thai dialect. However, due to internal immigration over the past 30 years, MBK has undergone a dramatic change in socio-economics and culture, from an agriculturally-based society, swiftly transforming into an urbanised and industrialised one. The national standard Bangkok (BKK) Thai, has influenced and motivated dialect shift among MBK speakers who speak the NT Thai dialect. The quantitative variationist approach can clarify the changing linguistic situation in the MBK area. The dependent linguistic variables include rhotic consonant onset (r) incorporating [r], [ɾ], [l] and [h] as its variants, such as [rɯa:n0], [ɾɯa:n0], [lɯa:n0] and [hɯa:n0], "house". The consonant cluster onset with rhotic (Cr) comprises {Cr}, {Cɾ}, {Cl} and {C∅}, such as [khrap3], [khɾap3], [khlap3] and [khap3], "male polite final particle". Only the (r) onset includes the local variant [h] in NT Thai dialect; only (Cr) includes a deleted variant. The independent variables comprise Labovian style factors, demographic social factors, social network strength (SNS) factors and phonological constraints. The dyadic interviews included 66 respondents. Defined by geographic origin differences, the 57 MBK locals were the focused group, while the 9 BKK speakers were the control group. A friend-to-friend method and judgment sampling were employed. The total length of interviews was around 120 hours. The study revealed the following: 1. In both (r) and (Cr) variables, the study showed that [l] and {C∅} were the most commonly-used forms. Stylistic stratification occurs, with formal styles favouring the standard rhotic variants. 2. Style plays a major role in linguistic variability, followed by social factors and linguistic constraints, respectively. LMC women are the linguistic trailblazers in certain variants. MMC elderly local males are the primary dialect maintainers. The MMC and WC locals used the covert prestige form [h] more often, but with different underlying social meanings. 3. Social network (SN) analysis employed an ego-centric network approach. SN factors were significant in the model but not a strong explanatory predictor. MBK networks were largely ethnically homogeneous. Contact frequency and intimacy scores were highly correlated. This confirms that all attributes forming the SN are highly interrelated and dependent. 4. The corresponding variants of (r) and (Cr) reveal non-parallel linguistic patterns. The relationship between variable (r) and (Cr) exhibited weak associations, with the rhotic variants patterning similarly, while the lateral variants were not aligned. The emergence of laterals in (Cr) might be derived partly from articulatory errors, while [l] patterned in line with {C∅} as the neutral variants in casual styles. 5. The stylistic and social factors played greater roles in linguistic variability than the internal linguistic factors. This might be due to the social structure that has an effect on the linguistic structure, particularly in these Tai-Kadai family and related non-Western languages. The style and social factor elements are an important determinant of linguistic structure.

This thesis is in two parts. The first is a critical analysis of the use of dialect as unheimlich in British writing. Using Freud's essay, The Uncanny (1919), as its basis, this thesis will argue that the use of dialect creates tension within a text between the representation of home, and of that which may be considered unhomely. Reading a range of British texts psychoanalytically alongside sociolinguistic studies, this thesis seeks to show how an author's choice of dialect-use within their literary form is bound up with an unheimlich mind-set of dialect within both writer and reader, whilst considering the cultural and historical contexts in which these attitudes are based. A range of unheimlich notions may be read from dialect, and its use is to be repressed or rejected as abject and replaced with the more accessible standard English associated with education, adulthood, civilisation and power. Yet it might also be read that, through standard English, the 'strange' has been brought into our homes and our mouths, made familiar through the hegemonic appropriation of the 'mother tongue'. Whilst the hearing of spoken accents and dialects within various medias has become increasingly common, negative connotations remain, especially when presented in the written form; what might be familiar to the ear remains strange to the eye. Its use divides readers as to its necessity and desirability, suggesting there is a long way to go before dialects are accepted fully in literary terms. Yet it remains an important aesthetic tool for the writer, and its continued use suggests the need or desire to represent in writing the many individual ways of speaking, and so too a sense of place, person, home, and familiarity, within the text. That writers appear to uphold associated connotations of maleness, or of undesirable, regressive human traits through dialect, however, suggests that embedded inequalities persist and so too the unheimlich qualities of dialect. The second part is a literary novel, exploring lives in a post-apocalyptic matriarchal society, set in Yorkshire, in which dialect and who is speaking play a discernible role.

This thesis tried to answer the question: how and why educated persons in Libya are reluctant in their behaviour to contribute to the development of the country in the areas of work and citizenship in general and in terms of culture. The research sought to answer the question in terms of self-concept motivation. Although the term "Self-concept" in general has been covered by extensive studies in most of the European world and America especially, the term still requires further detailed investigation to discover how the self-concept helps to explain human behaviour.

Vince Guaraldi (1928-1976) was a jazz pianist who achieved tremendous financial and commercial success in the 1960s with his popular recordings and his work for the Peanuts animated shorts. He cultivated a musical style that drew from several identifiable sources: boogie-woogie, bebop, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban jazz, and rock ‘n' roll. The result was a distinct approach to jazz which, although it may not have been as influential as that of some of his contemporaries, nevertheless constituted a unique and personal voice—what several commentators have referred to as the "Guaraldi sound." This dissertation considers the entire range of Guaraldi's recorded output in order to define and catalog many elements that contributed to Guaraldi's musical style. Using an analytical framework drawn from the work of Leonard Meyer and Benjamin Givan, this study describes both Guaraldi's improvisational style—the licks, patterns, and phrases that he plays while soloing—and common elements of his compositions—the chord progressions, grooves, and other features that are particularly idiomatic. Also discussed are Guaraldi's status within the established jazz canon and the disparity between his widespread popularity and his lukewarm critical reputation. The discussion and analyses provide useful insights for fans of Guaraldi, fans of Peanuts music, jazz musicologists, and any seeking to emulate the Guaraldi sound.

Chapter 5 traces the emergence of the language / dialect distinction through its main symptoms. Most tellingly, the early sixteenth century witnessed an increasing contrasting of the Latin terms dialectus and lingua, after Greek diálektos had been definitively borrowed into Neo-Latin. Another symptom was the creation of the concept of common language (lingua communis), which humanists often contrasted with dialectus. In addition, dialectus definitions were updated by means of determiners suggesting the hierarchical subordination of the term vis-à-vis lingua. In the 1540s, a new Latin phrase moreover appeared, ‘to differ only in dialect(s)’, which implied that related dialects differed from one another only superficially, whereas distinct languages exhibited substantial variation. Dialectus and lingua were, however, not contrasted in a very clear fashion from the start, since the former term especially was not yet delimited semantically. Instead, it was part of an intricate conceptual web, including also concepts like idiom and style.

Chapter 13 illustrates how the eighteenth-century Dutch orientalist Albert Schultens repeatedly defined the term dialectus in a highly systematic fashion. Schultens analysed the conceptual pair principally in Aristotelian terms but tied it also to geographical factors and framed it in a language-historical scheme. He, moreover, contrasted the analogy of language to the anomaly of dialect. The Dutch orientalist extended the language,/,dialect distinction so as to include a third concept, that of degenerate offshoot, which, unlike a dialect, did not preserve the core of the language intact. He also insisted on the linguistic classes in which related dialects allegedly differed from one another. Schultens was a key figure, since he put the conceptualization of dialect on the scholarly agenda, albeit always as a matter of instrumental importance only, and triggered numerous follow-up discussions among his pupils and readers.

The dialectal word szkut ‘boy’ in colloquial Polish Summary The subject of the article is the occurrence of dialectism ‘male child; boy’ in colloquial Polish. This word – despite its dialectal origin – is present in the statements of not only the users of the local dialect, but also of people who do not speak the dialect. The example material was excerpted mainly from the statements of Internet users posted on Internet forums. It seems that the lexeme is slowly stabilizing in colloquial language to the extent limited to one region – south-eastern Lower Poland, and is becoming another micro-regionalism.

The article analyzes the main types of dialect dictionaries created on the basis of Ukrainian dialects, as well as the peculiarities of the structure of the dictionary entry. In recent decades, there has been an increase in the interest of lexicographers-dialectologists in the creation of dialect dictionaries. On the example of several dictionaries in which the Hutsul dialect is presented, the completeness of the representation of dialect material in them is demonstrated. In particular, the use of illustrative material in dictionary entries is considered. The main difficulties associated with the process of creating a dialect dictionary are outlined. The article describes the problems that arise while working with the archival card index, on the basis of which a dialect dictionary is created (for example, «The Materials for the Dictionary of the Ukrainian Dialects of Transcarpathian Region” by M. Grytsak). It is noted that in recent years dialectologists have been trying to create lexicons with maximum linguistic information and detailed illustrations, using not only the respondents answers to questions from special programs or questionnaires, but also dialect texts, folklore sources, and archival materials, which made certain changes in the methodology of creating a dialect dictionary, as well as illustrating a word in a dialect dictionary. Dialectal explanatory dictionaries of a differential type, which were previously given preference, are increasingly being replaced by dictionaries of one dialect, where they represent as fully as possible all the vocabulary that they managed to register; dictionaries of one particular dialect system are becoming popular, for the creation of which large dialect texts are used. The use of different methods and sources for the creation of dialect dictionaries speaks of the prospects of such studies.

The paper looks at the phonological development of the Záhorie dialects in the context of historical phonological processes in Slovak and Czech. The Záhorie dialect group is the westernmost dialect of Slovak and many of its traits show a similarity with Czech. Old residual traits are either shared by Czech and West Slovak dialects (*ort, *olt > rot-, lot; *s’ > š; *dl, *tl) or correspond to Czech dialects (*jь- > je-; length for the acute). On the subject of innovations, which are also important in determining genetic affiliation, the Záhorie dialect shows a similarity with the Czech development as well. It was affected by probably the oldest Czech innovation (*dj > z), which was later neutralised by the restructuring of the morphonological system of alternations in assibilation conditions, i.e. the ď > dz change. The Záhorie dialect was also affect-ed by the Proto-Czech depalatalisations, diphthongisations, and in part by the Old Czech umlaut ä > ě, which is, however, the most consistent for  in internal syllables. Some phonological indicators suggest that the *r’ assibilation might have taken place in the Záhorie dialect as well. The most recent change connecting the Záhorie dialect to Czech dialects was the monophthongisation, after which the development of the Záhorie dialect group approaches the Slovak diasystem. The Záhorie dialect there-fore started its development as a dialect of Czech, subsequently gravitating toward the Slovak development, and hence it can with complete justification be considered as a transitional Czech-Slovak dialect.

This chapter presents diagnostic criteria for the classification of the Korean dialects and describes the characteristics of seven Korean dialects: Hamgyŏng, P'yŏngan, the Central, Ch'ungch'ŏng, Chŏlla, Kyŏngsang, and Jeju dialects, by phonological, grammatical, and lexical features. There have been many attempts to provide criteria for marking off borderlines between the Korean dialects. Owing to the lack of well-defined and agreed-upon criteria, however, the division and characterization of the dialects have been presented differently depending on researchers’ interests and theoretical backgrounds. The primary goal of this chapter is to introduce essential criteria of the classifications that are frequently mentioned in the literature and to illustrate the unique features of each dialect of Korean. Furthermore, this chapter aims to propose a genealogical tree of the Korean dialects based on the features of each dialect that are discussed in this chapter.

The article deals with dialect nouns that occur in three groups of closely related dialects of the Russian-Belarusian borderland (Smolensk, Vitebsk and Mogilev) and its function in particular dialect systems as lexical parallels . All found words were di-vided into two large groups, taking into account the characteristics of their productivity and non-productivity. Non-derivative dialect nouns demonstrate greater variability of lexical meanings due to their expansion or narrowing in semantics, while derivative nouns demonstrate stability of lexical meanings. This observation made it possible to establish such a criterion as the productivity to characterize the stability of dialect units in different groups of closely related dialects.

The paper presents results of quantitative analysis of phrasal tonal structure in two Northern Russian dialects with different types of “word-by-word” melodic contour. These dialects differ from Modern Standard Russian by the quantity of pitch accents since their 60% of words bear pitch accent, thus the prosodic unit in them is not a (phonological) word, but an accent group. In addition, the dialects differ from Standard Russian by regular presence of even tone on the accented vowel (in Arkhangelsk dialect 86% of all accents have it; in Vologda dialect it is less frequent: 33%) and higher frequency of pitch accents with increased interval. The main differences between Arkhangelsk and Vologda dialects are 1) the ratio of rising and falling pitch accents: 2.6% falling in Arkhangelsk dialect and 56% in Vologda dialect, it brings the latter closer to Standard Russian (53%) and 2) the level of the base tone on which the main tonal changes occur (high and medium, respectively). Thus “word-by-word” melodic contour exists at least in two varieties: with rising tonal movement and with a falling tone in the function of an ornamental accent. In general, the intonation system of Vologda dialect, though there are a lot of significant differences, is much closer to Modern Standard Russian than to Arkhangelsk dialect.

Dialect discrimination has an important practical significance for protecting inheritance of dialects. The traditional dialect discrimination methods pay much attention to the underlying acoustic features, and ignore the meaning of the pronunciation itself, resulting in low performance. This paper systematically explores the validity of the pronunciation features of dialect speech composed of phoneme sequence information for dialect discrimination, and designs an end-to-end dialect discrimination model based on the multi-head self-attention mechanism. Specifically, we first adopt the residual convolution neural network and the multihead self-attention mechanism to effectively extract the phoneme sequence features unique to different dialects to compose the novel phonetic features. Then, we perform dialect discrimination based on the extracted phonetic features using the self-attention mechanism and bi-directional long short-term memory networks. The experimental results on the large-scale benchmark 10-way Chinese dialect corpus released by IFLYTEK 1 show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art alternatives by large margin.

The Arabic language has many varieties, including its standard form, Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), and its spoken forms, namely the dialects. Those dialects are representative examples of under-resourced languages for which automatic speech recognition is considered as an unresolved issue. To address this issue, we recorded several hours of spoken Algerian dialect and used them to train a baseline model. This model was boosted afterwards by taking advantage of other languages that impact this dialect by integrating their data in one large corpus and by investigating three approaches: multilingual training, multitask learning and transfer learning. The best performance was achieved using a limited and balanced amount of acoustic data from each additional language, as compared to the data size of the studied dialect. This approach led to an improvement of 3.8% in terms of word error rate in comparison to the baseline system trained only on the dialect data.

The goal of the paper is to analyze the dialectic level of the collection of short stories Tri čvora na trepavici – Sećanje na krilato detinjstvo by Ljubivoje Ršumović. Our primary interest lies in the way the idiomatic characteristics of this work, written in the Shtokavian dialect, are manifested through the speech of its protagonists. We have singled out, classified and analyzed phonetic-phonological, morphological and syntactic dialectisms. As the most significant phonetic-phonological dialectisms, we present the Jekavian replacement of the former vowel jat, eliminating vowels from the initial and final position, unstable consonants h and f, as well as the phoneme v in an intervocalic position. On the morphological level, we have noticed suffixes of the archaic hard base in the declension of pronouns and adjectives, the change of the onomastic-hypocoristic model such as Jovo–Jova–Jovu/Jovov; as well as the regular occurrence of the infinitive in its full form. The most significant syntactic characteristics on a dialectic level are seen in the usage of verb forms, namely those for expressing the past. The dialect which the characters of this book use belongs to the southern regions of the Shtokavian dialect and as such fits into the areal of the Eastern Herzegovinian dialect. Keeping in mind that dialectisms in the characters’ speech of the novel are only one of the examples of characterization, they prove to be a strong stylistic feature. By using them, Ršumović brings to life his forgotten childhood heroes, presenting them to the contemporary readers and introducing them to a past world.

Taking advantage of computationally lightweight, but high-quality translators prompt consideration of new applications that address neglected languages. For projects with protected or personal data, translators for less popular or low-resource languages require specific compliance checks before posting to a public translation API. In these cases, locally run translators can render reasonable, cost-effective solutions if done with an army of offline, smallscale pair translators. Like handling a specialist’s dialect, this research illustrates translating two historically interesting, but obfuscated languages: 1) hacker-speak (“l33t”) and 2) reverse (or “mirror”) writing as practiced by Leonardo da Vinci. The work generalizes a deep learning architecture to translatable variants of hacker-speak with lite, medium, and hard vocabularies. The original contribution highlights a fluent translator of hacker-speak in under 50 megabytes and demonstrates a companion text generator for augmenting future datasets with greater than a million bilingual sentence pairs. A primary motivation stems from the need to understand and archive the evolution of the international computer community, one that continuously enhances their talent for speaking openly but in hidden contexts. This training of bilingual sentences supports deep learning models using a long short-term memory, recurrent neural network (LSTM-RNN). It extends previous work demonstrating an English-to-foreign translation service built from as little as 10,000 bilingual sentence pairs. This work further solves the equivalent translation problem in twenty-six additional (non-obfuscated) languages and rank orders those models and their proficiency quantitatively with Italian as the most successful and Mandarin Chinese as the most challenging. For neglected languages, the method prototypes novel services for smaller niche translations such as Kabyle (Algerian dialect) which covers between 5-7 million speakers but one which for most enterprise translators, has not yet reached development. One anticipates the extension of this approach to other important dialects, such as translating technical (medical or legal) jargon and processing health records or handling many of the dialects collected from specialized domains (mixed languages like “Spanglish”, acronym-laden Twitter feeds, or urban slang).

At the Thai-Malaysian border, a majority of the population comprises the Thai-Melayu ethnic group, as speakers of the Pattani-Malay dialect. Here, heritage language maintenance presents a salient factor. The ethnicity resides on both sides of the border. This study aims to investigate the heritage language maintenance and identities of the Thai-Melayu ethnic group in Jaleh Village, Yarang District, Pattani, Thailand, and to examine their attitudes towards the language used in their community. The samples-set comprised 20 local respondents who were born and raised in the village. A questionnaire addressing the effects of the heritage language maintenance of the Thai-Melayu was employed as a tool of data collection. A descriptive analysis method was used for data analysis. The results of the study revealed ideological underpinnings of the ethnic group with regards to language, as well as demographic information that informs population and cultural studies. These factors include that the Pattani-Malay dialect constitutes a major language, where the Thai language in comparison has a minor usage in the community. The Pattani-Malay dialect is used in the family domain, with extended families, or with neighbors, and in ritualistic or religion domains. In contrast, Thai is used with strangers, in government and official domains, in the school domain, and in the domain of public health. Moreover, the results support that the dialect has not as yet become endangered, evidenced by that the samples prefer the Pattani-Malay dialect as the main language for daily life, and for passing on their ethnic language to younger generations, a process labeled as ‘accidental maintenance.’

North-eastern Neo-Aramaic (also known as NENA) languages and literature are a prosperous and encouraging field of research. They abound with oral traditions and expressions that incorporate various spoken forms including everyday language, tales, songs, chants, prayers, proverbs, and more. These are used to transfer culture, knowledge, and community values. Some types of oral forms are idioms and fixed expressions. Idioms are extremely problematic to translate for a number of reasons, including: cultural and linguistic differences between languages; their specific connection to cultural practices and interpretations, and the difficulty of transferring the same meanings and connotations into another language with accuracy. This paper explores how to define and classify idioms, and suggests specific strategies and procedures to translate idioms from the NENA dialect Bartella (a local Aramaic dialect in Nineveh Plain) into English – as proposed by Baker (1992: 63–78). Data collection is based on 15 idioms in Bartella dialect taken from the heritage play Khlola d baretle teqta (Wedding in the old Bartella). The findings revealed that only three strategies are helpful to transfer particular cultural conceptualisations: using an idiom of similar meaning and form; using an idiom of similar meaning but different form, and translation by paraphrasing. Based on the findings, the author provides individuals and institutions with suggestions on how to save endangered languages and dialects, particularly with regard to the religious minorities’ heritage. Key among these recommendations is encouraging researchers and scholars to direct translation projects and activities towards preserving minority languages with their oral heritage and cultural expressions, which are susceptible to extinction.

The article is devoted to substandard elements which are considered as one of the components in the system of urban forms of communication. The Object of our research is substandard vocabulary, the Subject is structural characteristics of the modern city language, the Purpose of the study is to define the main types of substandard vocabulary and their role in the system of urban communication. The theoretical base of our research includes the scientific works of native and foreign linguists, which are devoted to urban linguistics (B. Larin, M. Makovskyi, V. Labov, T. Yerofeieva, L. Pederson, R. McDavid, O. Horbach, L. Stavytska, Y. Stepanov, S. Martos). Different lexical and phraseological units, taken from the Ukrainian, Russian and American Dictionaries of slang and jargon, serve as the material of our research. The main components of the city language include literary language, territorial dialects, different intermediate transitional types, which are used in the colloquial everyday communication but do not have territorial limited character, and social dialects. The structural characteristics, proposed in the article, demonstrate the variety and correlation of different subsystems of the city language. Today peripheral elements play the main role in the city communication. They are also called substandard, non-codified, marginal, non-literary elements or the jargon styles of communication. Among substandard elements of the city language the most important are social dialects, which include such subsystems as argot, jargon and slang. The origin, functioning and characteristics of each subsystem are studied on the material of linguistic literature of different countries. It is also ascertained that argot is the oldest form of sociolects, jargon divides into corporative and professional ones, in the structure of slangy words there are common and special slang. Besides, we can speak about sociolectosentrism of the native linguistics and linguemosentrism of the English tradition of slang nomination. Except social dialects, the important structural elements of the city language are also intermediate transitional types, which include koine, colloquialisms, interdialect, surzhyk, pidgin and creole. Surzhyk can be attributed to the same type of language formations as pidgin and creole because these types of oral speech were created mostly by means of the units mixing of the obtruded language of the parent state with the elements of the native languages.

The current study is an attempt to provide a linguistic, a historical, as well as a sociocultural record of the language variety spoken in Bashiqa (Northern Iraq) by one of the communities which represents a religious minority in Iraq known as Yazidis. This language is an example of an under-researched language diversity. This research draws on a sample of eleven in-depth semi-structured interviews with Yezidi men and women from Bashiqa, Iraq. The analysis of these interviews has yielded a number of points which help in documenting and preserving this language variety. The study concludes that the language used in Bashiqa is an ancient hybrid regional dialect in which many values and meanings are embedded. In short, the Yazidis understand their language as a vehicle of their intangible cultural heritage.
