This study aimed to investigate the phytochemical constituents and antimi-crobial activities of the crude methanol extracts of leaves of Euphorbia re-tusa Forssk and Euphorbia terracina L. collected from Saudi Arabia (Al-Rass province). Extracts of both plants showed presence of some bioactive phyto-chemicals such as tannins, saponins, terpenoids and traces of alkaloids for E. terracina; and tannins, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids and terpenoids for E. retusa. Among investigated microorganisms, methanol extracts exhibited some degree of antimicrobial activity towards some microorganisms; name-ly,Candida albicans ATCC 1405, Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 49461, Bacillus cereus ATCC 10876 and Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC 27736 respec-tively for E. retusa and towards Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923.Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 49461,Candida albicans ATCC 1405,Bacillus cereus ATCC 10876 and Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC 27736 re-spectively for E. terracina. MIC testing was ranged from 100 to 6.2 mg/ml, proving the antimicrobial potency of these plants’ extracts against some mi-croorganisms. Further studies regarding purification and fractionation are required since the antimicrobial activities of tested extracts were not com-petitor when compared to the antibiotics Chloramphenicol 25mg/ml or Clot-rimazole 10 mg/ml.

Анотація:
Euphorbia species possess pharmacological properties that have been widely used for medical purposes worldwide. In this paper, three plants belonging to the Euphorbia genus growing in North-East of Algeria were studied. The phenolic contents were identified using LC-MS, while the fatty acid composition of their fixed oils was determined with GC-MS. The quantification of the total condensed tannins and the leaves' entire anthocyanin content were performed using photometric methods. The main constituents of the polyphenolic compounds identified by LC-MS were ascorbic, chlorogenic, and ellagic acids. The oil yield of the seeds of E. terracina, E. biumbellata, and E. dendroides was 17.48%, 18.5%, and 20.05%, respectively. Quantitative analyses of these oils using GC-MS showed variations in the species' fatty acid constituents' concentrations and compositions. Besides, the phytochemical screening results showed that E. terracina possessed a high amount of tannin and anthocyanin content compared with other studied plants.

This dissertation provides a critical assessment of Laura Terracina (1519-c.1577) and her works. It argues that she was a consummate product of her age, embodying the tensions which ruled the Italian peninsula. Terracina published eight books and left a ninth in manuscript at the time of her death, winning legions of admirers and making her sixteenth-century Italy's most commercially successful female author. Yet in spite of her enormous popularity amongst her contemporaries, scholarship has largely neglected Terracina. This dissertation will open up an overdue field of enquiry into her life and works, exploring the significance of her role as a sixteenth-century female poet through the lenses of gender and class. By mapping her place in the literary landscape, it is hoped that this thesis will encourage scholars to afford Terracina the attention she so richly deserves. The first chapter of the dissertation situates Terracina as a poet of Naples, seeing her as a product of her family's political standing within the city, her academician status, and her own construction of an urban coterie of supporters. The second chapter considers the mechanics of the journey into print, assessing Terracina's own input and her close collaboration with male editors and publishers. It proposes a greater attribution of agency to Terracina than has thus far been made, arguing that she is, in fact, an important figure in the process of her texts reaching the hands of readers. The third chapter considers how the poet used her printed books as social tools, employing them to gain social and literary capital. The second section of the dissertation looks at two thematic strands within Terracina's poetry. Chapter four considers her political poetry, including her attitude towards the harm done to civilian populations across Europe. Chapter five looks at the religious dimension to Terracina's work, the spiritual poetry written in her later years, and the relationship this bears to her secular lyric. Finally, the dissertation concludes with a chapter on the contemporary reception of Terracina's texts, providing preliminary thoughts on how she was read, before closing with a consideration of her literary afterlife in the centuries that followed.

Lo scopo principale di questo elaborato di tesi è stato quello di realizzare una procedura per la valutazione dell’impatto del traffico veicolare sulla qualità dell’aria esterna nei dintorni del plesso universitario di Via Terracini e di indagare su una possibile correlazione tra i due fattori. A tal proposito i dati di concentrazione di biossido d’azoto, rilevati da una centralina installata su un edificio della Facoltà di Ingegneria, sono stati posti a confronto con i valori limite di concentrazione previsti dal D.Lgs. 155/2010 e successivamente con i dati di flusso di traffico veicolare.

Con il termine “tetti verdi” si intendono vere e proprie coperture vegetate, che fungono da valida alterativa alle tipologie convenzionali a coppi oppure in guaina impermeabilizzante. Per quanto questi possano essere considerati una soluzione moderna relativa alle diverse Best Management Practices (BMP), in realtà sono stati realizzati e sfruttati fin dall'antichità. Dagli anni Settanta ad oggi hanno preso sempre più piede in Europa e negli altri continenti a causa dei molteplici benefici che li accompagnano a livello ambientale. All'interno di questo studio ci si pone l‟obiettivo di valutarne i vantaggi, principalmente a livello energetico ed idraulico, riscontrati in letteratura, direttamente sul campo, grazie al sito di studio presso la sede di Ingegneria di via Terracini, Bologna. Sulle coperture del LAGIRN (Laboratorio di Geoingegneria e Risorse Naturali), infatti, nell‟estate 2013 sono stati realizzati due tetti verdi (uno a Sedum, che sarà indicato con la sigla GR, e uno con piante autoctone, identificato con la sigla NA). Tramite il confronto tra le temperature registrate grazie a diversi tipi di strumentazione, è stato possibile quantificare i comportamenti delle coperture su scala annuale, non solo l‟una rispetto l‟altra, ma anche in rapporto a una porzione di tetto lasciata a guaina bituminosa (indicato con la sigla RR). Considerando il ruolo della vegetazione come strumento per la mitigazione del fenomeno d‟isola di calore urbana, infine, con l‟ausilio del software CFD denominato ENVI-met si è modellata l‟intera area del Lazzaretto e si sono simulati tre diversi scenari: 1) Lo stato attuale 2) Una situazione ipotetica con tutte coperture a Sedum 3) Una situazione ipotetica con tutte coperture con specie autoctone per la giornata estiva più calda e per un comune giorno di Ottobre, a seguito di una minuziosa calibrazione. Il confronto tra la situazione reale e quelle supposte dimostra la validità dei green roofs nella lotta al riscaldamento delle grandi città.

Negli ultimi decenni, in varie parti del Mondo cosi come in Italia, si è assistito a un rapido aumento di strutture abitative, fabbricati ad uso industriale, residenziale e rurale. La continua sottrazione di terreno per tali scopi ha portato a un aumento di tutta una serie di problematiche ambientali. Con la diminuzione delle aree verdi si è andati incontro a una diminuzione della trattenuta idrica del terreno, all'aumento della velocità di scolo dell'acqua e del tempo di corrivazione con conseguenze sempre più drammatiche per le aree urbanizzate nei periodi di forti piogge. Inoltre, c'è da ricordare, che una diminuzione delle aree a verde comporta, oltre al cambiamento a livello paesaggistico, anche una diminuzione della capacità delle piante di trattenere le polveri inquinanti e di produrre ossigeno. Tutti questi fattori hanno portato allo studio di soluzioni tecnologiche che potessero unire i bisogni di verde della collettività con la necessità di una gestione sostenibile delle acque meteoriche. Tra esse, una che sta trovando notevole applicazione è la creazione di aree verdi sulla copertura degli edifici. Secondo le loro caratteristiche, queste aree verdi sono denominate tetti verdi e/o giardini pensili. La struttura si compone di strati di coltivazione e drenaggio con diversa profondità e una copertura vegetale. La vegetazione utilizzata può andare da specie con bassissime richieste manutentive (tipo estensivo) ad altre con maggiori necessità (tipo intensivo), come i tappeti erbosi. Lo scopo di questa tesi è stato quello di approntare una sperimentazione sul nuovo tetto verde realizzato presso la sede di Ingegneria, via Terracini 28, volta a stimare i costi economici e ambientali sostenuti per la realizzazione dello stesso, per poi confrontarli con i benefici ambientali legati al risparmio idrico ed energetico su scala edificio e urbana. Per la stima dei costi ambientali dei materiali utilizzati, dalla nascita al fine vita, si è utilizzato il metodo LCA- Life Cycle Assessment- e il software Sima Pro

La investigación se estructura en tres bloques temáticas bien definidos. El primero incide en el momento de inicio de esta arquitectura barcelonesa de la terracota, concretando su contexto, las causas de su génesis y señalando sus protagonistas, provenientes del campo de la arquitectura, de la creación escultórica y de la producción cerámica de la ciudad. Asimismo, se establece la evolución de la utilización de la terracota ornamental en la arquitectura de Barcelona a lo largo de los siglos XIX y XX, desde 1837 a 1968. A lo largo del segundo bloque se enumeran los centros de producción de este material. Se han descrito los procedimientos netamente escultóricos en la creación de modelos y en la realización de moldes. Proceso creativo que se complementa por su manufactura seriada, que utiliza los sistemas de producción de la industria cerámica. Igualmente hemos detallado las manipulaciones necesarias para su ubicación definitiva formando parte de la arquitectura, así como su relación con los elementos constructivos del edificio en el cual se ubica y con los otros materiales ornamentales. Por último, para el reconocimiento de este tipo de material ornamental y de esta arquitectura ha sido necesaria la verificación, mediante un examen exhaustivo, de los cambios sufridos a lo largo del tiempo y su posible deterioro, estableciendo su estado de conservación. Exámenes y análisis previos a cualquier propuesta de actuación de conservación-restauración, necesaria para su protección y pervivencia futura. Propuestas de conservación-restauración que se concretan en la identificación de este patrimonio, en la determinación de los procedimientos legales de protección y de los tratamientos de conservación-restauración que se concretan en la consolidación, limpieza, reintegración volumétrica y cromática y protección.

Highland terracing systems are a technology used in the ancient Andes to expand the agricultural frontier; then, that technology became an important source of food for the Incas. Research shows that the productivity of land was due to the form of construction of the platforms, but there are few studies that analyze soil fertility. In order to demonstrate the fertility in the terraces, soil physical and chemical properties were compared in three different sectors: terraces at rest, abandoned terraces and a hillside with no technology. They all belong to the terracing system of San Pedro de Laraos town, in Huarochiri, Lima. In all three sectors loam predominates. The soil pH is within the range of high bioavailability of most nutrients (5.5 to 7.5), except for two points on the slope without platforms. The soil electrical conductivity presents ranges that qualify the three areas as "no saline" (< 2 dS / m). The organic matter is in the appropriate percentages (3-5%), especially on the terraces at rest, which also have the highest content of NPK. In conclusion, the soil of the three zones does not differ significantly in their physical parameters, but it differs in the chemical parameters, especially in the content of macronutrients; the better range is in terraces at rest. However, the community of Laraos does not take advantage of it soil fertility; actually, most of their terracing system is abandoned and the structures are in a deterioration process.
Los sistemas de andenería son una tecnología prehispánica utilizada en los Andes para ampliar la frontera agrícola, llegándose a convertir en una importante fuente de alimentos para los Incas. Investigaciones señalan que la productividad de las tierras fue resultado de la forma de construcción de los andenes, pero son pocos los estudios que analizan la condición fértil del suelo propiamente. Para demostrar la fertilidad del suelo de los andenes, se compararon las propiedades físicas y químicas del suelo en tres zonas: andenes en descanso, andenes abandonados y ladera sin andenes, todos pertenecientes al sistema de andenería de la localidad de San Pedro de Laraos, provincia de Huarochirí, Lima. En los tres sectores predomina la textura franca. El pH se encuentra dentro del rango de mayor disponibilidad de nutrientes (5,5 – 7,5), con excepción de dos puntos en la ladera sin andenes. La conductividad eléctrica presenta rangos que califican al suelo de las tres zonas como “no salinos” (0,174 – 0,683 dS/m). La materia orgánica está en los porcentajes adecuados (3 – 5 %), sobre todo en los andenes en descanso, que de igual manera tenían los contenidos más elevados de NPK. Se concluye que el suelo de las tres zonas no difiere significativamente en sus parámetros físicos, pero sí en los parámetros químicos, especialmente en los contenidos de macronutrientes, siendo los andenes en descanso los que presentan valores dentro de los rangos ideales. Sin embargo, la comunidad larahuina no aprovecha la fertilidad de sus suelos, dejando sus andenes abandonados y en proceso de deterioro.

The Pontine territory, located in southern Lazio, once ʽpalus pontinaʼ, has been represented over the centuries through iconographic views, cartographic drawings, literary documentation, and designed through reclamation works that allowed, over time, to dry up and anthropize the land. El estudio pretende profundizar el conocimiento de los procesos de antropización del paisaje costero entre Civitavecchia, al Norte, y Terracina, al Sur, centrando la atención en el sistema de torres defensivas como evidencia arquitectónica, aún visible, de un territorio en transformación, alterado por la urbanización, a menudo “espontánea”, que ha provocado, sobre todo en el siglo pasado, la expansión descontrolada de los asentamientos ilegales y la construcción de importantes infraestructuras. El trabajo profundiza en la compleja relación establecida entre el sistema costero de torres - hoy en día en una situación muy diferente a la del pasado pero todavía muy legible - por su función original de defensa y control, ya que estas arquitecturas han representado, en el pasado, fuertes señales en el territorio, elementos significativos de gran valor. Completos o reducidos a un estado de ruina, estos testimonios, en su mayoría desarmados a mediados del siglo XIX, son aún capaces de contar importantes acontecimientos históricos y arquitectónicos. El objetivo de este trabajo, a través del estudio de fuentes archivísticas, iconográficas y los levantamientos in situ de muchas de estas estructuras, es, además de investigar la historia, proponer acciones para la recuperación y valorización de estas fábricas.

We show how asymptotic reduction techniques are used to model the motion of sessile droplets in the presence of heat transfer, evaporation and nanoparticles. When nanoparticles are present in the drop, lubrication theory is used to model the contact line dynamics and the evolution of the nanoparticle concentration. The model accounts for the effects of surface tension, Marangoni stresses, evaporation and intermolecular forces; the effect of nanoparticles on the latter endows the film with structural disjoining pressure forces near the contact line. Our numerical simulations catalogue the different types of possible contact line dynamics, which range from spreading and retraction, to pinning and ‘terracing’; the latter phenomenon is caused by the effect of nanoparticles on the intermolecular forces.

As pequenas estatuetas gregas de período helenístico (séc. III-I a.C.) que conhecemos como Tanagras (figuras 1, 2, 3 e 4) eram abricadas em terracota (argila modelada e cozida em forno apropriado) e mediam entre 10 e 30cm de altura, representando em sua maioria meninas e jovens mulheres. As estatuetas chamam a atenção por serem consideradas esteticamente “belas” e bastante diferentes de todos os estilos de estatuetas previamente produzidas na Grécia Antiga; eram produzidas com o uso de dois moldes, um para a frente e outro para as costas; após a modelagem, os detalhes eram adicionados individualmente e após a queima eram pintadas com diferentes cores vibrantes.

This contribution reports the activities carried out by LamoLab, a non-governmental organization for multi-domain and multi-scale research applied to cultural terraced landscapes. Terracing and dry-stone walling have been internationally recognized as carriers of cultural values and traditional knowledge. Lamole in Chianti (Italy) has served as a primary case study of terraced vineyards, where interdisciplinary research has been converging for almost a decade. The evolution of multi-sensor data acquisition in different spectral ranges, data-driven modelling and multi-scalar approaches performed over the years are mentioned, with specific attention to the evaluation of microclimate variations induced by dry-stone walls and how they affect plant growth, ripening, and production. The results already obtained from data processing and analysis are described, although the work is still progressing. The ongoing research and future projects of LamoLab are reported for developing methodologies to understand the parameters that are critical for the effective restoration and functioning of the dry-stone walled vineyards and construct performance-oriented design strategies to enable knowledge-based design processes.
