The northern pademelon (Thylogale browni) is a small to medium-sized macropodid that is native to northern and central New Guinea, but is also found on some of the islands of the Bismarck Archipelago, such as New Britain, New Ireland and Lavongai, where it appears to have been introduced. In New Ireland, archaeological evidence indicates that it may have been introduced by prehistoric human agency c. 7,000 years ago. In the chain of islands that constitutes New Ireland Province, historical evidence indicates that the species also recently occurred in the Tabar, Lihir, Tanga and Feni island groups prior to undergoing a series of local extinctions and range contractions during the first half of the 20th century. Furthermore T. browni also appears to have declined on New Ireland and Lavongai, where it is now restricted to the remote mountainous interior. Much of the sudden range contraction coincided with the Pacific War (1942-1945), during which time blockaded Japanese troops confiscated local food produce. It is postulated that the privations of war led to an extended period of over-hunting which drove the species into local extinction in much of its former range. Furthermore, since the war, ongoing human pressures and a breakdown in the traditional ethnozoological translocation / re-stocking regimes which would normally have re-introduced this species to satellite islands, appears to have prevented T. browni from regaining its former widespread distribution in the New Ireland Province Archipelago.

Plakina tanaga and Plakina atka n. spp. are described from the waters around the Aleutian Islands at depths between 118 and 146m. These are the first records of the genus from the Aleutian Islands. The new species described here are compared with the six species of Plakina previously reported from the Pacific. Both species belong to the Plakina trilopha species-complex and differ from other Pacific species of Plakina in their conspicuous convoluted surface pattern, color, and spiculation. In addition to the usual set of triods both species have a second category with basally spined rays. Plakina tanaga n. sp. has a strongly convoluted, microtuberculate surface, and a few small, thin spines at the basal rays of the triods, and relatively large trilophose calthrops. Plakina atka n. sp. has a smoother surface, more numerous larger and thicker basal spines at the triods, and considerably smaller lophocalthrops which are tetralophate.

Areas classified as Urban Heat Islands (UHI) have a higher health risk due to climate change. High population activity, increasing population density, and low vegetation cover cause this area to become warmer than its surroundings. From the detection of the spatial pattern, Padang City has nine sub-districts belonging to UHI. In this area, environmental problems often occur due to climate calamities and have an impact on health. Therefore, this study was to determine the classification of public health risks and community adaptation to climate change in urban heat island areas. This research was conducted on 141 households in Koto Tangah sub-district as the large UHI area and highly prone to climate problems. Data collected by questionnaires, observation, and literature study. The risk assessment matrix was used to identify health risk status. The results showed that water pollution, respiratory problems, and diarrheal diseases are classified as high risks. The community needs to adapt to climate change, mainly doing routine physical activities, to increase immunity from many diseases.

This research was conducted to provide an overview of the economic dynamic of the community, especially housewives in island Koloray in an effort to fulfill livelihood. This study it might be able to provide information that can be used to solve the problems of livelihood of fishing communities in small island. This study uses ethnographic approach. The data collected is secondary and primary data. The interview, discussion, and observation occurs more when the researcher is involved in the activity or when the informant is making, or selling the cake, it is not uncommon for an interview to occur while eating lunch, dinner and breakfast. Based on the verification of work, there are economic activities of housewives are ula-ula, making snacks, kiosk, wickerwork and saving. This activity was carried out so that they could increase the livelihood of the household. These activities depend on each other. Snack depends on the results of ula-ula, keeping the stall also done if there is not ula-ula activity, as well as plait the mat.

The focus of this thesis is the period of apparent cultural ‘transition’ or transformation in the archaeology of Island Melanesia in the closing centuries of the third millennium BP. This transformation has long been tied to an ill-defined and much debated ‘Incised and Applied Relief’ ceramic tradition, and in the western part of this region is seen as marking the ‘end’ of Lapita in the transition from the ‘Late Lapita’ to ‘Post-Lapita’ periods. I examine this ‘transition’ by taking a multi-pronged approach to the consideration of social interaction and exchange, in particular in terms of cultural continuities (‘evolutions’) and discontinuities (‘revolutions’) across it. Based on new research in the Tanga Islands and supplemented by the further examination of a group of sites on the New Ireland mainland, the thesis employs two broad types of data to track interaction—compositional and stylistic—which are gleaned from the analysis of pottery, obsidian and red ochre. Its aim is to tease out the complexities of interaction and cultural change at the ‘transition’ indicated by both the match and mismatch of the evidence from these different archaeological data sets. The thesis concludes that Tanga and other ‘transitional’ sites from the Bismarck Archipelago to New Caledonia were embedded in a number of different overlapping and interconnected interaction networks of different spatial and temporal scales and likely cultural significance. These networks reflected webs of relationships and aspects of shared identity and history on both more localised and broader regional levels, and incorporated elements of both stylistic similarityand difference, and cultural continuity and discontinuity with Lapita. It finds that there is indeed some utility to a considerably revised notion of the ‘Incised and Applied Relief Tradition’: one that is both more and less strictly defined.

Using the musical metaphor of tonic as home, this chapter provides an account of Tania León’s childhood in Cuba. It provides novel information about the composer’s musical training on the island as well as her involvement with experimental avant-garde and modernist artistic projects during the first decade of the Cuban revolution. The chapter also provides a glimpse into everyday life after the triumph of the revolution and its positive and negative impact among regular Cuban citizens, especially black individuals. Finally, the chapter provides an entry into the way Cold War policies in Cuba and the United States affected everyday Cubans.

We begin by introducing the modern landscape setting of the Yung Shue Wan Site of Archaeological Interest on Lamma Island and the Sha Po backbeach and plateau sites within it. The present cultural context of the area is contrasted with its multi-period human past as evidenced by the excavated archaeological remains. The area’s social and environmental background is introduced. Then the site’s importance is highlighted in terms of key discoveries in the Bronze Age and Six Dynasties-Tang periods, as well as through the richer social narratives offered by recent historical archaeology. The chapter is rounded off with a chapter-by-chapter summary of the process by which the authors approached the task of ‘Piecing Together Sha Po’.

Islam’s impact on China is growing because its external and internal influences are more intertwined than ever. Islamic civilization permeates the New Silk Road, shaping all of China’s efforts to integrate megaregions throughout Afro-Eurasia. At the same time, the development of Islam inside China changes the way Chinese people define themselves as a nation and as members of the human family. The deeper China enmeshes itself in the Islamic world, the more Chinese must ask themselves what it means to be Chinese. When Chineseness is understood more inclusively and universally, China gains greater effectiveness in relating to Muslims everywhere, regardless of nationality. For generations, Chinese scholars from many disciplines have drawn upon Sino-Islamic interchanges to reinterpret Chinese identity in more pluralist and cosmopolitan ways. Especially notable are the contributions of Gu Jie Gang in history and ethnography, Fei Xiao Tong in social science, and Tang Jun Yi in neo-Confucian philosophy.

A construction of breakwaters and other shoreline structures on part of a coast influences drift sand transport in the bay, and causes comprehensive topographic changes on the beach. This study investigated shoreline and coastal changes, taking as an example of Shiraragahama Beach in Miiraku on the northwestern end of Fukue Island, Nagasaki Prefecture (Kyushu, Japan). Miiraku, adjacent to Saikai National Park, appears in the revered 8th century poetry collection “Manyoshu” and served as a port for a ship taken by the Japanese envoy to China during the Tang Dynasty (618-709). Because of the recent development of breakwaters for a fishing harbor, the shore environments of this beach have changed significantly. In this study, the status of silt deposits and topographic changes on this beach arising from the construction of a harbor breakwater were evaluated by comparing aerial photographs taken in different years. Next, the changes in the shoreline visible from aerial photographs from 1947 to 2014 were analyzed. Lastly, the altitude of the beaches was measured using accurate survey methods. The following results were obtained: 1) coastal erosion made rock cliffs to fall off along the shore and deposited sand on this beach; 2) the more serious advances or retreats of the shoreline took place around shoreline structures; 3) sandbars and beach cliffs were formed.

Migratory seabirds are an unseen conduit between marine and terrestrial systems, carrying the nutrients they consume at sea into the forests where they breed. Acting as environmental sentinels, their health and reproductive success provide early warning signals of deteriorating marine eco-systems as the climate changes, and fish stocks decrease. Aotearoa New Zealand is the seabird capital of the world, with ~25% of all species breeding here and ~10% exclusively so. They play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, with their long-term well-being is closely interconnected with our own prospects for a sustainable future. Now predominantly restricted to off-shore islands due to predation and habitat destruction, seabirds and their familiar sounds have become less available in an age when the unprecedented global movement and planetary spread of the human population has culminated in unsustainable fishing, predators and habitat destruction. Inspiring mythology, song, poetry and stories, birds have been significant in shaping our understanding of how our natural environment has come to be known and understood. This paper speculates upon how we learn to communicate and cooperate with these precious taonga, and what might be learned from such an exchange through creative practice. Reflecting upon what birds might tell us, musician Matthew Bannister and I, a visual artist, have taken our cue from seabirds sharing our local environment on the west coast of Aotearoa - from the petrel (peera) through to the gannet (tākapu). Working on the premise that bird vocalisation is a performed negotiation that includes defence of territory and mate attraction, a bird’s call is a form of communication that effectively says “Come here” or “Go away”, which arguably is true of music – marking a social space and time to invite or repel. Rather than limiting bird calls to functionalist categories of explanation, we ask whether seabirds can communicate and exchange information about environmental changes using a malleable vocabulary, comprised of unique acoustic units arranged and re-arranged sequentially for greater communicative depth. Granting a high level of agency and creativity to birds as opposed to believing a bird only avails itself of stereotyped ‘speech’ to survive an accident-rich environment, places greater importance on responses that are improvised directly upon environmental stimuli as irritant rather than as a signal. Matthew explores bird calls via musique concrète, sampling recordings of seabirds to abstract the musical values of bird song conventions – a human response to the ‘other’ in jointly formed compositions, reflecting a living evolving relationship between composer and bird. In further developing our research into a multimedia artwork, I shall extend a technique used for electroacoustic composition (granular synthesis) to video portraits of composer/performer and bird. In applying granular synthesis techniques to video, tiny units of image and sampled sound are reassembled within the frames. Through the mixing of existing synthesised sequences, performer/composer and bird become active participants in the making and remaking of a shared environment, articulating the limits of space/territory to find new ways to be heard within it.
