Many engineering design problems require reference to standards or codes of practice to ensure that acceptable safety and performance criteria are met. Extracting relevant data from such documents can, however, be a problem for the unfamiliar user. The use of expert systems to guide the retrieval of information from standards and codes of practice is proposed as a means of alleviating this problem. Following a brief introduction to expert system techniques, a tool developed by the authors for building expert system guides to standards and codes of practice is described. The steps involved in encoding the knowledge contained in an arbitrarily chosen standard are illustrated. Finally, a typical consultation illustrates the use of the expert system guide to the standard.

Advancements in hardware and software have propelled machine learning (ML) solutions to become vital components of numerous information systems. This calls for research on the integration and evaluation of ML development practices within software companies. To investigate these issues, we conducted expert interviews with software and ML professionals. We structured the interviews around information systems development (ISD) models, which serve as conceptual frameworks that guide stakeholders throughout software projects. Using practice theory, we analyzed how software professionals perceive ML development within the context of ISD models and identified themes that characterize the transformative impact of ML development on these conceptual models. Our findings show that developer-driven conceptual models, such as DevOps and MLOps, have been embraced as common frameworks for developers and management to understand and guide the ML development processes. We observed ongoing shifts in predefined developer roles, wherein developers are increasingly adopting ML techniques and tools in their professional work. Overall, our findings underscore that ML technologies are becoming increasingly prominent in software projects across industries, and that the incorporation of ML development in ISD models is an ongoing, largely practice-driven, process.

The sometimes-paradoxical emergent behavior of complex systems may be explained by the interaction of simple rules. The paradox of primary care—that systems based on primary care have healthier populations, fewer health inequities, lower health care expenditures, and better system-level evidence-based disease care, despite less evidence-based care for individual diseases—may be explained by the iterative interaction among three simple rules that describe the generalist approach: (1) Recognize a broad range of problems/opportunities; (2) Prioritize attention and action with the intent of promoting health, healing, and connection; and (3) Personalize care based on the particulars of the individual or family in their local context. These are complemented by three simple rules for specialist care that represent current approaches to quality and health care system improvement: (1) Identify and classify disease for management; (2) Interpret through specialized knowledge; (3) Generate and carry out a management plan. Health care systems that support the enactment of the simple rules of the generalist approach are likely to have more effective primary and specialty care, and greater population health, equity, quality, and sustainable cost.

At present, distributed wind is in its infancy, so engineering practice and related technology research and development is relatively lacking. The aging problem parallel operation between wind power and power grid enterprises is the issue that the whole world should be confronted with. This paper study the influence of wind power access to power grid operation, reveal the interactive mechanism of distributed wind power and power grid, formulate the corresponding technical specification and achieve the centralized control of distributed wind power. These can be used to guide the large-scale development of distributed wind power, which makes the development of distributed wind power guided by resource type guide transition to the grid type.

COVID-19 supportive quarantine care in the community is managed by primary care practices. There is no current guidance on how a primary care practice with high volumes of patients screened for COVID-19 can re-configure itself to become responsive to the pandemic. We examined Learning Health System guidance from the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine and adapted it to our primary care practice to create an efficient, effective, adaptive response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We suggest evaluating this response in the future for effectiveness and efficiency.

Abstract This paper aims to illustrate an automated system developed to give formative and personalized feedback to teachers in training. It is an expert system (Paviotti, Rossi & Zarka, 2012) that uses concrete examples, cases and scenarios to guide the engaged learners (Leake, 1996). In this regard, this system is able to create questionnaires, deliver them, collect and analyze data, send feedback to the participants to provide information about their beliefs and behaviors about teaching and learning processes. Far from constituting an assessment of teaching practices, the automated feedback demonstrates its usefulness in identifying teachers’ mindframes at an early stage, so as to be able to implement more specific and personalized training. This allows its application to be extended to further training areas as well as constituting an effective approach for need analysis and a preparatory action for numerous training activities (guided discussion with experts, observation on practice, modeling, etc.).

Abstract Systems-based practice (SBP) was introduced as 1 of 6 core competencies in 1999 because of its recognized importance in the quality and safety of health care provided to patients. Nearly 25 years later, faculty and learners continue to struggle with understanding and implementing this essential competency, thus hindering the medical education community’s ability to most effectively teach and learn this important competency. Milestones were first introduced in 2013 as one effort to support implementation of the general competencies. However, each specialty developed its milestones independently, leading to substantial heterogeneity in the narrative descriptions of competencies including SBP. The process to create Milestones 2.0, and more specifically, the Harmonized Milestones, took this experience into account and endeavored to create a shared language for SBP across all specialties and subspecialties. The 3 subcompetencies in SBP are now patient safety and quality improvement, systems navigation for patient-centered care (coordination of care, transitions of care, local population health), and physician’s role in health care systems (components of the system, costs and resources, transitions to practice). Milestones 2.0 are also now supported by new supplemental guides that provide specific real-world examples to help learners and faculty put SBP into the context of the complex health care environment. While substantially more resources and tools are now available to aid faculty and to serve as a guide for residents and fellows, much work to effectively implement SBP remains. This commentary will explore the evolutionary history of SBP, the challenges facing implementation, and suggestions for how programs can use the new milestone resources for SBP. The academic medicine community must work together to advance this competency as an essential part of professional development.

This study addressed the use of benefit levers to develop a guide for an operational plan for spread of best practices in the health system of South Africa. Using the best evidence to inform practice is the cornerstone of quality patient care. Besides uptake and implementation, spreading best practices is crucial as this provides more patients with evidence-informed care and to improve practice and health (care) outcomes. However, spread of best practices is not always effectively done. An example includes Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) as this best practice is translated for practice and implemented on a limited scale; spread to the whole system seems to be problematic. Various factors can be used to facilitate the spread of best practices. Edwards and Grinspun identified four benefit levers which create the tipping point towards successful adoption, implementation and spread of evidence: alignment, permeation plans, leadership for change, and supporting and reinforcing structures. However, little is known about these benefit levers and it remains unclear what the use of benefit levers for system-wide spread would entail, specifically for other contexts as the model (including the benefit levers) has never been operationalised (Edwards & Grinspun, 2011:19). The overall aim of this study entails therefore the development of a guide for an operational plan, formulating the use of benefit levers in the spread of best practices. To achieve this aim the following objectives for this study were set: 1. To explore and describe characteristics of benefit levers to facilitate spread of best practices. 2. To develop a guide for an operational plan to use benefit levers for the spread of best practices. This study was embedded in the postmodern paradigm, whereby the systems theory was used as a theoretical framework. The first objective was achieved by two steps. Firstly, an integrative literature review of concept clarification of the four benefit levers was done. Secondly, semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with key informants from a variety of levels of the health system involved in the spread of KMC in South Africa. Findings were used to achieve objective two. A draft guide for an operational plan was developed, based on the findings of the individual interviews. A logic model was used as format. This guide was refined by experts using the Delphi technique. The Delphi involved two rounds. From the feedback of the first round of the Delphi, a logic model which provides a graphic outlook of the guide, was suggested and refined in the second round, together with the guide. Further, after the Delphi, a template useable for practice was derived from the guide. The guide, logic model and template could help organisations or departments planning to spread best practices in a certain context (e.g. South Africa), to develop an operational plan, where these benefit levers are considered. This is crucial as currently best practices (such as Kangaroo Mother Care) are often not spread on a system-wide basis to improve practice. The guide will therefore be made accessible to health care workers and researchers in South Africa Finally, conclusions were drawn, the research was evaluated, limitations were identified and recommendations were formulated for nursing practice, education and research. Overall, it can be concluded that for effective spread of best practices the benefit levers alignment, permeation plans, leadership for change and supporting and reinforcing structures are required. Further, specifically regarding the objectives and steps of this study the following conclusions can be made: • Literature/studies about leadership for change and supporting and reinforcing structures was found, but regarding alignment and permeation plans, limited rigorous literature was found (Objective 1 – Step 1). • Key informants involved in the spread of a specific best practice (Kangaroo Mother Care) could see the value of benefit levers used for the spread of best practices in the South African health system (Objective 1 – Step 2). • Benefit levers were found useful for development of a guide for an operational plan to spread best practices. This guide will be made accessible to be used by healthcare organisations and departments in South Africa (Objective 2 – Steps 1 and 2).

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Enterprise Program (EP), which provides fee-for-service consulting services to the USFS, is interested in integrating systems thinking into its service offerings. Despite there being several excellent sources on the range and diversity of systems thinking, no single framework exists that thoroughly yet concisely outlines what systems thinking is along with its deep history, theoretical tenets, and soft and hard approaches. This thesis is an attempt to create such a framework, aimed specifically at practical application in a land management agency, through literature synthesis injected with original analysis. The usefulness of the framework is then tested using three case studies within the EP and the agency as a whole. The framework highlights several important aspects of systems thinking, both generally and related specifically to social-ecological management. First, systems thinking is the transdisciplinary study of complex phenomena from a holistic, rather than reductionist, perspective. The world can be viewed as a massive set of embedded systems -- elements with relations that lead to nonlinear behavior -- making the role of the observer essential in identifying scales of interest and interactions amongst them. Second, the deep history of holistic thinking suggests that its modern scientific study could benefit from exploring the East's long-standing cultural and spiritual approaches to holism through cognitive unity and oneness with mankind and nature. Third, categorizations of systems approaches as "soft" versus "hard" are helpful but can distract us from the ultimate goal of systems thinking, which is to understand the various tools in the systems thinking toolbox so as to apply them critically and creatively to make a meaningful difference in the world. Fourth, I see the soft systems approaches as having a distinct systems thinking orientation and the hard systems approaches as overlapping substantially with operations research, the close cousin of systems thinking. Fifth, I identify a spectrum of complexity, contending that systems thinking tends to be concerned with what I call subjectively and computationally complex systems, as well as complex adaptive systems, leaving simple systems for other approaches. Finally, I contend that it is the soft systems approaches and the two theoretical pillars of hierarchy theory and cooperation theory that will aid wicked social-ecological problem solving the most. The framework is applied to three case studies. Examination of the EP reorganization using a hard systems approach revealed two critical high-level functions that were absent in the current structure, paving the way for new designs that could take those functions into account. Analysis of an initiative to increase citizen recreation on USFS lands showed that a systems approach had been improperly applied and how the application of a soft approach at the onset could have systematically framed the problem and offered unique normative insights for giving voice to relevant non-agency stakeholders as well as nature and future generations. And viewing the perennial problem of wildfire management through the lens of cooperation theory revealed how USFS leadership could take a more active role in promoting the long-term outlook, durable relationships, and reciprocal behaviors that are required for cooperative improvement to take place. As environmental narratives worsen and the need for transitioning towards sustainable ways of living heightens, systems thinking offers ever-increasing value to resource managers for its ability to deal with the many perspectives and normative content that underlie wicked problems and to help to illuminate potential consequences of system interventions given the interplay of complex structural dynamics across space and time.

This qualitative study critically examined nurses' perception of nursing qua nursing in an American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet® re-designated healthcare system in Albany NY. Watson's Theory of Human Caring is used by many Magnet® hospitals, including the site for this study, to inform and guide nursing practice. Watson's Theory supports concepts and practices of integral health, holism, caring, healing, and the education and integration of complementary health care modalities as independent therapeutic nursing interventions. This study aimed to understand the nurse's emancipatory experience, comportment and self-agency as she/he participated in a theory guided practice; and illuminate the nurses' acquisition, understanding and utilization of knowledge and power as required for engaging independent therapeutic nursing interventions in the unitary-transformative health paradigm.

Eight nurses from the Oncology Unit self-selected to participate without recidivism from August to October 2012. The study was conducted in two parts: 1) A questionnaire was developed by the researcher to collect demographic and educational data from participants including: age, ethnicity, level of academic education, years of experience in nursing and in specialty, education to nursing theory, including education specifically to Watson's Theory of Human Caring and to holistic nursing and Complementary and Alternative Modalities (CAM), and CAM use in practice and self-care; and 2) Kim's (1999, 2007, 2010) Critical Narrative Inquiry Method was used to collect and analyze narrative data in three phases: 1) descriptive 2) reflective; and 3) critical-emancipatory. Written and audio data from in-person interviews were transcribed and analyzed by the researcher. Data was validated by participants and used to answer four research questions: 1) What are the emancipatory experiences of nurses in a Magnet® re-designated healthcare system that promotes Human Caring Theory; 2) What are the patterns that facilitate nurses' comportment and self-agency to fully embody and practice integral nursing qua nursing in a Magnet® re-designated healthcare system; 3) What are the patterns that create barriers to nurses' comportment and self-agency to fully embody and practice integral nursing qua nursing in a Magnet ® re-designated healthcare system; and 4) How does the organization support nurses control over their nursing practice within this one ANCC Magnet ® re-designated healthcare system? Findings gleaned from the patterns that occurred most frequently in the narrative data included: 1) Nurses used Human Caring and Integral Nursing theoretical concepts to inform and conduct their practice; even though they reported limited education to the theories. Elements of the theories that manifested in their practice and self-care included: advocating, educating, counseling, creating a caring-healing environment by honoring the patient and family's space and wishes, approaching patients and families non-judgmentally with an open mind and loving kindness, using complementary modalities of humor, prayer, intention, authentic presence, music, imagery, touch, and obtaining complementary therapy, palliative and spiritual care consults for patients; 2) Facilitators to practice included: the support of their manager, colleagues and team members, optimal staffing patterns, resource nurses and competent, self-motivated care technicians and support staff; and 3) Nurses in the study confirmed their Magnet® healthcare system values: a) Supportive and participative nursing management; b) Advanced education by providing tuition reimbursement and flexible scheduling; c) Participation in and use of the most current nursing research in their practice; and d) A strong nursing mentoring culture, where nurses empower each other to provide ethical care and advocate for patients' and nurses' rights. Opportunities for nursing education and leadership include: 1) The need to revise academic and continuing education curricula to adopt integral theory guided practice at all levels; 2) The need for advanced practice nurses to translate conceptual models into practice and help nurses to articulate the value and power of nursing to impact integral health and healing.

Suggested Keywords: nursing, holistic, integral, human caring, theory guided practice, emancipatory praxis, critical narrative inquiry, ANCC Magnet®.

Field Guide is a mixed-media artist book detailing the exploration of a fictitious culture through cartography, narrative, and illustration. It is presented through the lens of an amateur archaeologist, navigating a chain of islands to search for ruins and artifacts. In part, the project is focused on the fantasy of an imagined world. The island chain is a place entirely of my own creation. By creating the viewpoint of an outside explorer, it was possible to navigate through this world. Although I, as the artist, can know everything about this fictitious world, adopting the perspective of someone distanced by time and place allowed for discrepancies, misinterpretation, and the sense of mystery that typically colors interpretations of foreign, ancient cultures. This character is forced to fill in the context for what she is viewing based upon her conjectures, which may or may not reveal the full truth. Overall, perspective on cultures is often shaped by the observations of a few individuals. In the same way, viewers are forced to consider this culture through the lens of one character, without being entirely certain if they are consuming objective truths.

The use of simulators in support of learning has been problematic. The limited reports on their implementation in classrooms, or in distance learning, to replace existing laboratory equipment have been incomplete and contradictory making assessment of their value difficult. Since the majority of the studies were conducted at four year colleges or universities, the validity of generalizing the results to community colleges is also questionable. However, should a method be identified to successfully implement simulators in classrooms, there would be a potential savings in equipment purchase costs and means to provide an alternative to traditional classroom laboratories. From a distance learning perspective, simulators would enable the creation of active learning environments previously not possible because of equipment requirements of the learner. However, insufficient information existed to provide a guide for community colleges to create and implement a simulated laboratory learning environment for computer training. The goal of the study was to use computer-based simulators to enable distant students to master work traditionally done in a hands-on computer laboratory. It applied current learning theories and course design techniques to create a learning environment for computer training, executed training in the environment and provided a rich descriptive report on the findings. When used in an appropriate context, simulators provided the equivalent learning environment to that of real hardware. In the experimental courses, students perceived the simulator product as beneficial to their learning experience, and confirmed their position by rating simulator labs highly and stating they would take future courses that use simulators. A pretest to posttest score comparison confirmed that knowledge of the subject matter had indeed improved. Also, the results confirmed an existing demand for simulators as tools to reinforce learning, to enable online courses, to increase flexibility in scheduling of tradition classrooms, and to reduce costs of maintaining classroom equipment. A thick description of the design, implementation and evaluation of the findings is included in this report to provide guidance for those implementing, or considering the implementation of, simulators in a community college setting. Recommendations to simulator developers and future researchers are also provided.

The Avatar for trumpet and piano by Dr. Steve Rouse is one of the most challenging compositions in the trumpet repertoire. Due to The Avatar's challenges and increasing popularity, a study is necessary to aid its performance. Each movement is performed on a different instrument: Bb piccolo (with an optional A piccolo part) for Nativity, Bb Flugelhorn for Enigma-Release and Bb trumpet for Rebirth. In addition, the performer must convey one of the work's possible programmatic meanings: (1) The Hindu belief of an Avatar and its life cycle, (2) the life of Christ or (3) the human lifecycle. Chapter 1 gives historical information about the work. Chapters 2-4 discuss each movement of The Avatar programmatically and pedagogically. Facets of each movement are analyzed including differences in programmatic choices, rehearsal techniques and sound concepts. Chapter 5 provides recording suggestions, including choosing a recording engineer, preparing and planning for a recording section, choosing a venue and the benefits of hiring a tonmeister.

The Buoyancy Can Riser Tensioner (BCRT) systems are designed to provide tension to Top-Tensioned Risers (TTRs). BCRT systems do not transfer the riser weight to the floater and they minimize the interaction between the floating platform and the riser system. For deepwater field developments, this attractive feature allows efficient design of the floaters as well as the riser systems. Although, the vertical riser load is not transferred to the hull, the BCRT system makes lateral contact with the hull at several locations. During the past 3 years, analytical models have been developed to characterize mechanics of the contact between two large floating bodies (buoyancy can and hull) and compliant guide hardware has been developed. Placement of a compliant guide between the hull and the BCRT has become the current practice for design of Spar floaters. The initial development of the analytical models and the compliant guide hardware coincided with the Horn Mountain project. The project team placed extensive instrumentation on the hull and compliant guides with a vision to confirm robustness of the guides and to calibrate analytical models used during the design phase. This paper presents a summary of the data collected on the performance of the Spar hull, compliant guides, and the riser systems for storms up to 25 ft of significant wave height. Analytical methods and predictions are presented to characterize the dynamic interaction between the BCRT system and Spar hull.

Abstract By many measures, U.S. industry is no longer the leader in developing world class products. U.S. product development and manufacturing systems need substantial improvement to assure a successful future. The Superior Engineering Design Program (SEDP) was created within the University of Tennessee’s College of Engineering in 1987, with a mission to improve the teaching and practice of product development. Within this program, the authors have developed a computer-based learning tool, the “SEDP Product Development Guide” (“the Guide”), to help senior and graduate engineering design students learn “superior” product development processes. The Guide incorporates the latest product development strategies and techniques, as practiced by some of industry’s most competitive product development teams. The software is an assistant, but is specifically not an “artificial intelligence” system that purports to make decisions for the user. Rather, the guide provides structure and asks “critical” questions at appropriate times during the product development process. While design tools are available for assistance, the student engineer is always responsible for answering the “critical questions” satisfactorily to assure that the designed product meets customer requirements. A prototype SEDP Product Development Guide has been installed for evaluation in the SEDP’s Engineering Design Center, located in the University’s Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department.

Ethical concerns arises from the proliferation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) based systems in use. AI ethics has been approached mainly in guidelines and principles, not providing enough practical guidance for developers. Hence, we aim to present RE4AI Ethical Guide and its evaluation. We used the Design Science Research methodology to understand the problem, present the guide and evaluate it through a survey. The Guide is composed of 26 cards across 11 principles. Our preliminary results reveal that it has the potential to facilitate the elicitation of ethical requirements. Thus, we contribute to bridge the gap between principles and practice by assisting developers to elicit ethical requirements and operationalise ethics in AI.

Low-tech building methods have been gradually developed according to the actual needs of a community and the demands of location-specific requirements. High-tech digital design has advanced the level of precision and control over material ap-plications and has increased the possibilities for studying design options. But where might the two meet? How can in-novation in construction carry forward the lessons learned from vernacular and low-tech building solutions? How can contemporary technology be used to create new solutions that are as context-aware and affordable as low-tech solutions in places that low-tech solutions are still generally practiced? This paper explores the relationship between digital design and low-tech application by local labor looking for opportunities to advance the exchange between both the design process and the practice. The goal is to study and advance the linkage between the precision and design innovation of computational technology with traditional building systems in a context-aware and universally applicable manner. The study process starts by observations from designing a screen brick wall which leads to developing an modeling tool that allows the users to design brick masonry wall systems in a digital world and to create construction guides for building the wall in the physical world, allowing for back and forth communication between the designer, the community and the mason during the design and construction process. This process is not only a form finding exploration, it rather focuses on the communication between team members and the ease of construction. The designer can simultaneously study form, pattern, and solar exposure and can communicate the process and the result with the mason and the users using simple paper guides called “DNA guide”. This approach advocates a collaborative process where the form-making, prototyping and building is a shared experience between the designer, the community and the layperson.

This guide is a basic reference on systems thinking and practice tailored to the context and needs of the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). It is an output of the FCDO Knowledge for Development Programme (K4D), which facilitated a Learning Journey on Systems Thinking and Practice with FCDO staff during 2021 and 2022. The guide offers a common language and shared framing of systems thinking for FCDO and its partners. It explores what this implies for working practices, business processes and leadership. It also offers links to additional resources and tools on systems thinking. We hope it can support systems thinking to become more commonplace within the culture and practices of FCDO and working relations with partner organisations.

This guide represents the state of the art of support fluid practice and aims to improve existing design, testing and practices for deep foundation elements – bored piles (drilled shafts), barrettes (LBEs) and diaphragm wall panels. It represents the first time that knowledge of good practice from around the world has been brought together into a single authoritative publication. The purpose of this Guide is to present current understanding on bentonite, other clays, polymers and blended systems, including the advantages and limitations, in order to allow informed selection of the optimum technical solution(s) for the conditions on each individual worksite. This Guide does not recommend any particular type of support fluid as each worksite has specific characteristics and requirements. This Guide will assist individuals and corporations involved in the procurement, design, and construction of deep foundations including Owners/Clients, Designers, General Contractors, Academics and Specialist Contractors. It is intended as a practical addition to existing standards, not a substitute. Project Specifications, Standards and Codes should always take precedence. This first edition details accepted industry good practice and will be followed by a second edition based on a comprehensive R&D program which will carry out a series of field research studies. The studies will collect data from active project sites and develop and conduct non-standard tests in order to establish what testing methods have substantial value and to better understand the validity of the compliance values in use. The task group will then produce a second edition of the guide that promises to be the best authority on the use of support fluids in the industry. This is expected to be published in 2021.

Army policy calls for each installation to install a building automation system (aka utility monitoring and control system [UMCS]) to provide for centralized monitoring of buildings and utilities to reduce energy and water commodity and maintenance costs. Typically, the UMCS, including building control systems (BCS), is installed and expanded in piecemeal fashion resulting in intersystem incompatibilities. The integration of multivendor BCSs into a single basewide UMCS, and subsequent UMCS operation, can present technical and administrative challenges due to its complexity and cybersecurity requirements. Open Control Systems technology and open communications protocols, including BACnet, LonWorks, and Niagara Framework, help overcome technical incompatibilities. Additional practical considerations include funding, control systems commissioning, staffing, training, and the need for a commitment to proper operation, use, and sustainment of the UMCS. This document provides guidance to Army installations to help achieve a successful basewide UMCS through its full life cycle based on DoD criteria and technical requirements for Open Control Systems and cybersecurity. It includes institutional knowledge on technical solutions and business processes amassed from decades of collaboration with Army installations and learned from and with their staff. Detailed activities spanning both implementation and sustainment include planning, procurement, installation, integration, cybersecurity authorization, and ongoing management.

Learning disabilities are among the most common disabilities experienced in childhood and adulthood. Although identifying learning disabilities in a school setting is a complex process, it is particularly challenging in low- and middle-income countries that lack the appropriate resources, tools, and supports. This guide provides an introduction to learning disabilities and describes the processes and practices that are necessary for the identification process. It also describes a phased approach that countries can use to assess their current screening and evaluation services, as well as determine the steps needed to develop, strengthen, and build systems that support students with learning disabilities. This guide also provides intervention recommendations that teachers and school administrators can implement at each phase of system development. Although this guide primarily addresses learning disabilities, the practices, processes, and systems described may be also used to improve the identification of other disabilities commonly encountered in schools.

This research and policy brief provides an overview of the Center for Equity for English Learner’s Superdiverse Adolescent Multilingual Learners Resource Guide. The publication follows the Global California 2030 call to recognize and promote the home languages and cultures of English Learners as valuable resources to increase multilingualism within the state. The term “Superdiverse” is used to acknowledge the many facets of diversity that make up the identities of English/Multilingual Learners in addition to the breadth of linguistic diversity encompassed within their language journeys. Twenty-six English/Multilingual Learners between grades seven and twelve were interviewed about their school experiences as culturally and linguistically diverse adolescents. These students represent a vast array of diverse identities and language typologies from across California, and Superdiverse Adolescent profiles were created for each participant in addition to analysis of the interviews. Six of these profiles are presented in this brief to highlight the key aspects of Superdiverse student experiences, including advocacy, the importance of language support, the value of welcoming environments, multilingual pride, and cultural identity. Additionally, student insights from the interviews were compiled into three thematic modules of support for Superdiverse youth in education: (1) School Culture and Climate, (2) Culturally and Linguistically Sustaining Education, and (3) Systems of Excellence. These modules, their corresponding elements, and relevant research are presented along with educational policy recommendations at the state, district, and school level, as well as for educator preparation programs.

Having a disability can be one of the most marginalizing factors in a child’s life. In education, finding ways to meet the learning needs of students with disabilities can be challenging, especially in schools, districts, regions, and countries with severely limited resources. Inclusive education—which fully engages all students, including students with disabilities or other learning challenges, in quality education—has proven particularly effective in helping all students learn, even while challenges to implementing inclusive education systems remain. This guide provides suggestions for developing inclusive education systems and policies, especially for low- and middle-income countries that are moving from a segregated system toward an inclusive system of education. We specifically address the needs of countries with limited resources for implementing inclusive education. However, our strategies and recommendations can be equally useful in other contexts where inclusive education practices have not yet been adopted.

The initial wetting of a reservoir sets a limit for the EOR potential during water-based recovery operations and “Smart Water” injection. For this reason, an improved understanding of the factors influencing the wetting can help to control and better forecast oil production during water-based floods. To preserve and reproduce the original reservoir wettability is a challenging task and wrong cleaning and core restoration procedures can lead to incorrect wettability estimations and thus induce serious errors when evaluating the initial wettability of a reservoir system or its EOR potential by water-based methods. Thereby, there is a need to improve the chemical knowledge on interactions among the rock, brine and fluids present in reservoir systems. This will help to understanding the influence of the parameters affecting wettability during cleaning and core restoration processes. Understanding which are the main parameters influencing oil recovery processes is of great relevance. The objective of this document is to provide suggestions for added-value experiments, complementing and challenging the standard RCA and SCAL procedures, prior to performing experimental research in which wettability and wettability alteration processes are important. Lessons learned will be highlighted and new ideas to optimize core restoration protocols to preserve and closely reproduce wettability are put forward. These recommended practices target core restoration procedures after the core material has been received in the laboratory. The target audience for this document is engineers and scientists with an interest in core preparation for wettability studies.
