Анотація:
Using presentation software such as PowerPoint or Keynote to sup- port lectures and presentations has become ubiquitous in both academia and industry. However, designing the visuals of presentation slides is a time-consuming and laborious task; repetitive steps are required for selecting templates, organizing objects, and optimizing layouts. To al- leviate these laborious works and to allow users to focus on preparing the contents of presentations, we present SmartPPT, a framework that supports the automatic generation of presentation slides from textual outline. We built a Recommender System model inside the framework that could pick up slide templates for input textual outline. To test its functionality and efficiency, two sets of user study procedures were conducted and shown that SmartPPT is time efficient in generating slides and it outperforms in user satisfaction when compared to user- handcrafted slides and the baseline condition, which was PowerPoint suggested templates.
Att använda presentationsprogram som PowerPoint eller Keynote för att stödja föreläsningar och presentationer har blivit allestädes närvarande både i akademin och industrin. Att utforma visuella bilder av presentationsmaterial är emellertid en tidskrävande och mödosam uppgift; upprepade steg krävs för att välja mallar, organisera objekt och optimera layouter. För att underlätta dessa mödosamma arbeten och låta användarna fokusera på att förbereda innehållet i presentationer presenterar vi SmartPPT, ett ramverk som stöder den automatiska generationen av presentationsbilder från en textvy. Vi byggde en Recommender System-modell inuti ramen som kunde plocka upp bildmallar för inmatning av textrutor. För att testa dess funktionalitet och effektivitet genomfördes två uppsättningar av användarstudieprocedurer och visade att SmartPPT är tidseffektivt för att generera bilder och användarna blev nöjdare jämfört med när man gjort handgjorda bilder eller använt PowerPoint-föreslagna mallar.

Chapter one discusses the rationale for, and the aims of, this study. The design of interactive computer systems is an enterprise quite distinct from the design of other artefacts: design, or inventing a pattern, for interactive computer systems is a matter of design for use.HCI research has recognised the need for a user-centred approach to design, and has correspondingly drawn upon a variety of disciplines. However, the dominance of psychological theory and method has led to the exclusion of a body of applicable findings and methods from disciplines which deal with human interaction, and to a failure to systematically investigate the the links between human interaction and human-computer interaction. Prospectively, conversation analysis provides the resources for design of more natural interactive systems,and represents the possibility of design guidance which avoids the problems inherent in current design guidelines. The methods and findings of conversation analysis, this chapter has proposed, will provide a principled approach both to the investigation of human-computer interaction, and to the design of interactive systems. Within the general aim of investigating the applicability of conversation analysis to HCI, the remainder of this study addresses both the theoretical issues, and illustrates the practical outcomes, in relation to an empirical study of user-system interaction. Chapter two examines in greater detail the perspective of ethnomethodology and the findings of conversation analysis. The expository materials, such as exist in these fields, are recognised as being difficult, especially so for those who may be approaching these topics for the first time, and from other than sociological backgrounds. Accordingly the discussion concentrates upon only their more central assumptions and findings. Chapter one observes that conversation analysis and ethnomethodology have not yet found expression in HCI research largely because of the divergence between their methods and those of psychology. The exact nature of those methods, and their advantages for HCI research, are explored in chapter three. This discussion concerns both the practical methodology adopted in this study, the relationship between experimental and non-experimental investigative methods, and the practical applicability of the methods of conversation analysis in the investigation of human-computer interaction.An empirical study of human-computer interaction is undertaken in chapter four. The examination of videotaped sequences of humancomputer interaction through conversation analytic methods is combined with the findings of conversation analysis, to formulate design guidelines and recommendations. Finally, chapter five attempts to assess the significance of this approach to HCI research and design. The promising route which conversation analysis provides for investigation of user-system interaction, and the possibility that it can inform the design of future interactive systems, is explored.

This thesis dwells on the issue of using personal computers in real-time control and data acquisition applications. A data acquisition and control system is designed to acquire temperature, humidity, air volume and solar radiation data and control the inside temperature, air volume and maximizes solar radiation inside an ecologically closed test structure. The focus is on an Intel 8088 or 80286 based personal computer. A personal computer is used for development of the software and the final real-time system runs on a PC as well. This eliminates the need of expensive cross compilers and in-circuit emulators. A control and data acquisition task is selected and a solution using an IBM compatible personal computer is demonstrated. Various advantages and disadvantages for selecting the personal computer and development software and environment are discussed. Solutions to various problems encountered are discussed.

As a CAD tool, the Computer Aided Model Structuring System (call MOSTS in the following text) for model structuring in system design and system simulation has been designed and implemented. First, this MOSTS allows system design experts to create and save System Data Bases (SDBs) for model structuring in system design and simulation. Then, these SDBs can be retrieved, modified, and finally used to structure system models by design engineers. The MOSTS pursues the model structuring process in such a way that the model structure having the best performance (according to the expert's knowledge and the design engineer's design criteria) will be generated first, and then the second best model, the third best model, and so on.

Burstiness in workloads is often found in multi-tier architectures, storage systems, and communication networks. This feature is extremely important in system design because it can significantly degrade system performance and availability. This dissertation focuses on how to use knowledge of burstiness to develop new techniques and tools for performance prediction, scheduling, and resource allocation under bursty workload conditions.;For multi-tier enterprise systems, burstiness in the service times is catastrophic for performance. Via detailed experimentation, we identify the cause of performance degradation on the persistent bottleneck switch among various servers. This results in an unstable behavior that cannot be captured by existing capacity planning models. In this dissertation, beyond identifying the cause and effects of bottleneck switch in multi-tier systems, we also propose modifications to the classic TPC-W benchmark to emulate bursty arrivals in multi-tier systems.;This dissertation also demonstrates how burstiness can be used to improve system performance. Two dependence-driven scheduling policies, SWAP and ALoC, are developed. These general scheduling policies counteract burstiness in workloads and maintain high availability by delaying selected requests that contribute to burstiness. Extensive experiments show that both SWAP and ALoC achieve good estimates of service times based on the knowledge of burstiness in the service process. as a result, SWAP successfully approximates the shortest job first (SJF) scheduling without requiring a priori information of job service times. ALoC adaptively controls system load by infinitely delaying only a small fraction of the incoming requests.;The knowledge of burstiness can also be used to forecast the length of idle intervals in storage systems. In practice, background activities are scheduled during system idle times. The scheduling of background jobs is crucial in terms of the performance degradation of foreground jobs and the utilization of idle times. In this dissertation, new background scheduling schemes are designed to determine when and for how long idle times can be used for serving background jobs, without violating predefined performance targets of foreground jobs. Extensive trace-driven simulation results illustrate that the proposed schemes are effective and robust in a wide range of system conditions. Furthermore, if there is burstiness within idle times, then maintenance features like disk scrubbing and intra-disk data redundancy can be successfully scheduled as background activities during idle times.
