Switches are a barrier place in the track for setting the permissible speeds for trains on the main tracks, as they have special structural devices for branching traffic from the main track to the secondary track. Symmetrical switches have a number of advantages compared to conventional ones: with the same brand with conventional switches, symmetric ones allow significantly higher speeds for the train movement with side tracks; symmetrical switches have a shorter length with the same radii of the transfer curves; it is possible to apply crosspieces with a larger angle than in the conventional switches while preserving the length of the curve and the radius. The specified qualities of single, versatile, symmetrical switches determined their use scope. On the main transport tracks, symmetrical switches are used in sorting parks of the stations, as well as in main tracks when it is necessary to achieve increased speeds of movement on both side tracks. Symmetric switches according to the purpose and design have the significant differences from the most conventional switches, and therefore the study of these designs is important and relevant. Moreover, very few scientific works were devoted to such studies of Ukrainian railways.

Often a simple (four-bar linkage) mechanism to trace a desired path is sought. Dimensions of linkages to trace a specified coupler curve exactly are difficult to determine. Precision point techniques do not guarantee that the desired path will be generated. The methodology presented in this paper is based on indirect synthesis approach to select four-bar linkages that trace a given desired path. A practical, computer-aided three-dimensional design chart for the selection of four-bar linkage candidate designs that trace symmetrical paths is presented. It is based on hypothesis that any arbitrary path can be approximated by a symmetrical path at least for the purpose of choosing an initial design. Four-bar linkages that generate symmetrical paths are easier to design and exhibit a definite pattern of changes in their shape as the linkage parameters are varied. General design categories and the corresponding solution subspaces in the 3-D design map are identified to aid in the selection of candidate designs. The automation of the design-selection process requires a satisfactory means to quantitatively compare the “desired” and the “known” coupler curves. This paper addresses the issues involved in quantitative comparison of two arbitrary curves using parameterization and shape evaluation. A design example of automated selection of mechanism designs is also presented.

Many combinatorial problems can be formulated as a 0-1 integer linear program (0-1 ILP), which consists of an objective function subject to linear constraints over 0-1 variables. A method called branch-and-cut has been successfully used to attack ILPs, but ILPs are still difficult to solve in practice. The problems we investigate demonstrate large numbers of equivalent (isomorphic) solutions. We are only interested in generating one solution from each equivalence class. To accomplish this, we study and extend a method by Margot [22] that avoids con sidering unnecessary partial solutions by generating an isomorph-free search tree. We implement a branch-and-cut library, and solve combinatorial design problems involving t-designs, packings, coverings and intersecting set systems. We experimentally analyze the strengths and limitations of our algorithms and determine when it is efficient to use isomorph-free branch-and-cut. Our framework generates new results and reproduces, in competitive time, existing ones.

One method of estimating the direction of an electromagnetic source is based on phase comparison. In this thesis the design and fabrication of a prototype antenna to demonstrate a new DF antenna architecture is described. Four antenna elements are grouped into three pairs with element spacing according to a set of symmetrical number system pairwise relatively prime moduli (m1 = 3, m2 = 4, m3=5). The phase difference between each pair of elements is a symmetrical folding waveform that is determined using a mixer. The output voltage from each pair is amplitude analyzed using a small comparator ladder. In each channel, the symmetrically folding waveform, folds in accordance with the channel modulus and thus, only requires a precision according to that modulus. A high resolution DF is achieved after the N different SNS moduli are used and the results of these low-precision channels are recombined to yield the direction of arrival. The frequency of operation of the prototype is 8.5 GHz. Results based on measured and simulated data are resented

The main objective of this thesis is to examine the trade-offs between security and efficiency within symmetric ciphers. This includes the influence that block ciphers have on the new generation of word-based stream ciphers. By incorporating block-cipher like components into their designs, word-based stream ciphers have experienced hundreds-fold improvement in speed over bit-based stream ciphers, without any observable security degradation. The thesis also emphasizes the importance of keying issues in block and stream ciphers, showing that by reusing components of the principal cipher algorithm in the keying algorithm, security can be enhanced without loss of key-agility or expanding footprint in software memory. Firstly, modern block ciphers from four recent cipher competitions are surveyed and categorized according to criteria that includes the high-level structure of the block cipher, the method in which non-linearity is instilled into each round, and the strength of the key schedule. In assessing the last criterion, a classification by Carter [45] is adopted and modified to improve its consistency. The classification is used to demonstrate that the key schedule of the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) [62] is surprisingly flimsy for a national standard. The claim is supported with statistical evidence that shows the key schedule suffers from bit leakage and lacks sufficient diffusion. The thesis contains a replacement key schedule that reuses components from the cipher algorithm, leveraging existing analysis to improve security, and reducing the cipher's implementation footprint while maintaining key agility. The key schedule is analyzed from the perspective of an efficiency-security tradeoff, showing that the new schedule rectifies an imbalance towards e±ciency present in the original. The thesis contains a discussion of the evolution of stream ciphers, focusing on the migration from bit-based to word-based stream ciphers, from which follows a commensurate improvement in design flexibility and software performance. It examines the influence that block ciphers, and in particular the AES, have had upon the development of word-based stream ciphers. The thesis includes a concise literature review of recent styles of cryptanalytic attack upon stream ciphers. Also, claims are refuted that one prominent word-based stream cipher, RC4, suffers from a bias in the first byte of each keystream. The thesis presents a divide and conquer attack against Alpha1, an irregularly clocked bit-based stream cipher with a 128-bit state. The dominating aspect of the divide and conquer attack is a correlation attack on the longest register. The internal state of the remaining registers is determined by utilizing biases in the clocking taps and launching a guess and determine attack. The overall complexity of the attack is 261 operations with text requirements of 35,000 bits and memory requirements of 2 29.8 bits. MUGI is a 64-bit word-based cipher with a large Non-linear Feedback Shift Register (NLFSR) and an additional non-linear state. In standard benchmarks, MUGI appears to su®er from poor key agility because it is implemented on an architecture for which it is not designed, and because its NLFSR is too large relative to the size of its master key. An unusual feature of its key initialization algorithm is described. A variant of MUGI, entitled MUGI-M, is proposed to enhance key agility, ostensibly without any loss of security. The thesis presents a new word-based stream cipher called Dragon. This cipher uses a large internal NLFSR in conjunction with a non-linear filter to produce 64 bits of keystream in one round. The non-linear filter looks very much like the round function of a typical modern block cipher. Dragon has a native word size of 32 bits, and uses very simple operations, including addition, exclusive-or and s-boxes. Together these ensure high performance on modern day processors such as the Intel Pentium family. Finally, a set of guidelines is provided for designing and implementing symmetric ciphers on modern processors, using the Intel Pentium 4 as a case study. Particular attention is given to understanding the architecture of the processor, including features such as its register set and size, the throughput and latencies of its instruction set, and the memory layouts and speeds. General optimization rules are given, including how to choose fast primitives for use within the cipher. The thesis describes design decisions that were made for the Dragon cipher with respect to implementation on the Intel Pentium 4. AbstractThe main objective of this chapter is to offer to practitioners, researchers and all interested parties a brief categorized catalog of existing lightweight symmetric primitives with their main cryptographic features, ultimate hardware performance, and existing security analysis, so they can easily compare the ciphers or choose some of them according to their needs. Certain security evaluation issues have been addressed as well. In particular, the reason behind why modern lightweight block cipher designs have in the last decade overwhelmingly dominated stream cipher design is analyzed in terms of security against tradeoff attacks. It turns out that it is possible to design stream ciphers having much smaller internal states.

AbstractCold-formed steel members with perforations have been commonly applied to meet the demands for technical installations. The design of the perforated members was regulated in Specification AISI S100-16 using the Direct Strength Method (DSM). This method is based on elastic buckling analyses to predict the capacities of cold-formed steel members. The determination of elastic buckling loads is compulsory for the application of the DSM method in the design and has been presented in the Specification. The specification regulations are only applied for symmetrical and evenly spaced holes. The paper, therefore, investigates the effects of unsymmetrical, unevenly spaced and eccentric holes on the elastic global buckling loads of perforated channel members using finite element analyses. The effect of symmetrical and evenly web holes on the elastic global buckling loads of cold-formed steel channel members in comparison with those of gross section members is also investigated.

Abstract Often a simple mechanism to trace a desired path is sought. Coupler curves of linkages are generally difficult to determine, especially in the case that a certain shape or a type of curve is required for a particular application. Precision point techniques do not guarantee that the desired path will be generated. The design methodology presented in this paper is an indirect synthesis approach to design four-bar linkages that trace (approximately) a given desired path. Simple and yet extremely useful design charts for the initial selection of four-bar linkage candidate designs are presented in this paper. This is based on our philosophy that an arbitrary path (desired) can be viewed as an approximation to a known symmetrical path. Four-bar linkages that generate symmetrical paths are easier to design and exhibit a definite pattern of changes in their shape as the linkage parameters are varied. The first step in automating the design-selection process requires a satisfactory means to quantitatively compare the desired with the known (symmetrical) coupler curves. This paper addresses various issues involved in the comparison of two arbitrary curves. Based on curve parametrization, an effective algorithm for quantitative shape evaluation of arbitrary curves is developed. Finally, the design charts and design examples are presented.

Design improvements on labyrinth seal teeth and a honeycomb land are examined by three-dimensional CFD numerical modeling of the flow field. The only objective is reduction of the total leakage through the new seal. CFD assumptions and analysis was validated by comparison with leakage data from labyrinth seal experiments conducted by Stocker [1]. The baseline chosen for comparison of sealing effectiveness is a conventional low clearance straight-through labyrinth seal with four teeth and a honeycomb land of symmetrical hexagonal cells. The proposed new seal has a staggered honeycomb land and straight teeth with an inclined notch. CFD predicts ∼17% reduction in seal leakage at a radial clearance of 0.005 inch (0.122mm) due to higher wall friction and flow turbulence.

Flexure hinges are non-assemble flexible joints that allow the relative rotation of two adjacent rigid parts through bending. Traditionally thermoplastic material hinges are made through injection moulding. 3D printing technologies such as Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) introduced new possibilities regarding hinges development due to design freedom and the availability of multiple materials. However, the current state of the art focuses mainly on single materials hinges with non-symmetrical design for one-way folding. For this reason, this paper aimed to identify and test multiple design solutions for two-way folding hinges made of compatible and low-compatible thermoplastic materials using design thinking methods. The design process considered the materials' bond formation, resulting in overlapping designs for compatible materials and interlocking designs for the others. The considered materials were acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polylactic acid (PLA) with thermoplastic co-polyesters (TPC) for the hinge. The resulting designs of multi-material two-way folding hinges were tested using a tensile test to evaluate the performance of the interlocking mechanism. The results show that macroscopic interlocking provides the best results.

The efficiency of conventional heat exchangers is restricted by many factors, such as effectiveness of convective heat transfer and the cost of their operation. The current research deals with these issues by developing a novel method for building a lower-cost yet more efficient heat sink. This method involves using a specially designed curved microchannel to utilise the enhanced fluid mixing characteristics of Dean vortices, and thus transferring heat efficiently. Numerical models have been employed to investigate the heat transfer enhancement of curved channels over straight equivalents, with the aim of optimising the heat exchanger design based on the parameters of maximising heat transfer whilst minimising pressure drop and unit cost. A range of cross-sectional geometries for the curved channels were compared, showing significantly higher Nusselt Numbers than equivalent straight channels throughout, and finding superior performance factors for square, circular and symmetrical trapezoidal profiles. Due the difficulty and expense in manufacturing circular microchannels, the relatively simple to fabricate square and symmetrical trapezoidal channels are put forward as the most advantageous designs. These results take into account both constant wall temperature and constant heat flux conditions. For a given set of channel dimensions, an optimal input flow rate condition is also determined.

The pressure drop and heat transfer in a two pass internal cooling channel with two different bend geometries is experimentally studied with the goal of improving the Thermal Performance Factor (TPF) in the coolant channel. The geometries studied are: (1) a baseline U-bend geometry with a rectangular divider wall, (2) a symmetrical bulb at the end of the divider wall, and (3) a combination of the symmetrical bulb and a bow on the opposite outer wall leading to a shaped flow contraction and expansion in the bend. Tests are conducted for four Reynolds number ranging from 10000 to 55000. The symmetrical bulb eliminates the separation due to the sharp turn and makes the heat transfer distribution in the bend portion more uniform. This modification reduces the bend pressure drop by 37% and augments the TPF by nearly 29% compared to the baseline case. The combination of bulb and bow case increases the local heat transfer in the bend region significantly, and reduces the bend pressure drop by nearly 27% leading to an augmentation of the TPF of 32% compared to the baseline case. These improvements in TPF point to the benefits of using the improved bend designs in internal cooling channels.

This paper presents an overview of the development of a reliable bearing system for a new line of small turbochargers where the bearing system has to be compatible with a new compressor and turbine design. The first part demonstrates how the increased weight of the turbine, due to a 40 % increase in flow capacity, influences the dynamic stability of the rotor-bearing system. The second part shows how stability can be improved by optimizing important floating ring parameters and by applying different bearing designs, such as profiled bore bearings supported on squeeze film dampers. Test results and stability analyses are included as well as the criteria which led to the decision to choose a squeeze film backed symmetrical 3-lobe bearing for this new turbocharger design.

Transient thermal analysis of electric machine under realistic operation conditions and thermal losses is studied. A symmetrical portion of the stator and rotor is modeled and all thermal losses and cooling boundary conditions are applied according to operational duty cycle. It is found that there is a temperature gradient across the stator of more than 30 °C, across the rotor of more than 70 °C and across the whole machine of more than 100 °C. These temperature gradients could cause high thermal stresses and lead to severe reduction in the machine life. It is extremely important in future designs to consider reducing the temperature gradients by optimizing the design of the electric machines through advanced cooling techniques and strategies.

This paper investigates the singular configurations of five-degree-of-freedom parallel mechanisms generating the 3T2R motion and comprising five identical legs of the RPUR type. The general mechanism was recently revealed by performing the type synthesis for symmetrical 5-DOF parallel mechanisms. In this study, some simplified designs are proposed for which the singular configurations can be predicted by means of the so-called Grassmann line geometry. This technique can be regarded as a powerful tool for analyzing the degeneration of the Plu¨cker screw set. The main focus of this contribution is to predict the actuation singularity, for a general and simplified design, without expanding the determinant of the inverse Jacobian matrix (actuated constraints system) which is highly nonlinear and difficult to analyze.

The design, fabrication and control unit of a novel medical implant silicon micropump based on AC electroosmosis is presented in this research. The advent of microfabrication and integrated miniature pumps has applications on devices like implantable glucose sensors. These micropumps find their greatest applications in biomedical devices requiring the transport of small, accurately measured liquid quantities. Such types of micropumps can be programmed to administer insulin at a constant rate throughout the day, thus eliminating any surges or deficits of the drug in the patient’s bloodstream [1]. These micropumps can also be integrated with the lab-on-a-chip and can provide inexpensive, disposable devices. The strict performance requirements of medical devices call out for highly reliable micropump designs. To demonstrate the fluid manipulation in glucose sensor applications, an optimized and well-controlled biased AC electroosmotic micropump is developed using symmetrical electrode array. Experimental results also show that this kind of miniature pump has potential applications in portable infusion/suction systems.

Various experimental challenges exist in measuring the spatial and temporal field of a nonlinear acoustic pulse propagating through an array of scatterers. Probe interference and undesirable high-frequency response plague typical approaches with acoustic microphones, which are also limited to resolving the pressure field at a single position. Measurements made with optical methods do not have such drawbacks, and schlieren measurements are particularly well suited to measuring both the spatial and temporal evolution of nonlinear pulse propagation in an array of scatterers. Herein, a measurement system is described based on a z-type schlieren setup, which is suitable for measuring axisymmetric phenomena and visualizing weak shock propagation. In order to reduce directivity and initiate nearly spherically-symmetric propagation, laser induced breakdown serves as the source for the nonlinear pulse. A key component of the schlieren system is a standard schliere, which allows quantitative schlieren measurements to be performed. Sizing of the standard schliere is aided by generating estimates of the expected light refraction from the nonlinear pulse, by way of the forward Abel transform. Finally, considerations for experimental sequencing, image capture, and a reconfigurable rod array designed to minimize spurious wave interactions are specified. 15.

The application of stainless steel materials in civil structures for seismic protection lies in its low-cycle fatigue characteristic. However, the data of existing research are mainly based on the low-cycle fatigue in small strain amplitudes. To this end, we perform low-cycle fatigue testing of Austenitic stainless steel S30408, which has low yield point and good elongation performance, under the cyclic load with a maximum strain amplitude reaching up to 5%, to fill the gap. The stress-strain response characteristics of the stainless steel material under the cyclic load are analyzed; then, the parameters of the strain-fatigue life relationship and the cyclic-plastic constitutive model used for FEA simulation are extracted. Results show that the stainless steel’s stress-strain curve is nonlinear without a yield plateau, thus presenting a high strength yield ratio and ductility. The hysteresis loops of the material are plump with a shuttle shape and are symmetric to the origin, indicating a fine energy dissipation capacity. The skeleton curve under cyclic loading with cyclic hardening can be significantly reflected by the Ramberg Osgood model, which is affected by the strain amplitude and loading history; it is also different from the monotonic tensile skeleton curve. The strain-fatigue life curve fitted by the Baqusin Manson Coffin model can predict the materials’ fatigue life under different strain amplitudes. The mixed hardening model, including isotropic and kinematic hardening, based on the Chaboche model, is able to simulate the cyclic stress-strain relationship. Further, its parameters can provide basic data information for the seismic design of civil structures when Austenitic stainless steel S30408 is used.
