The change in constituent order in English is one of the most thoroughly investigated changes in the history of the English language. Even so, there is still disagreement among scholars as to what caused the change. The aim of this article is to argue that it was the influence of the Scandinavians and their language, Old Norse, that caused English to abandon the SOV constituent order and instead adopt SVO constituent order. Because of the intense language contact between the two cultures, several linguistic features of Old Norse found their way into the English language. Numerous morphological features were borrowed from Old Norse, but especially the adoption of syntactic features such as stylistic fronting and CP-V2 suggests that Old Norse influence was strong enough to affect the basic syntax of English and thus strong enough to have initiated the change in English constituent order.

This article reports the findings of a study in which we investigated the possible effects of word order on the acquisition of case marking. In linguistic typology (e.g. Greenberg, 1963) a very strong correlation has been shown between dominant SOV (subject object verb) word order and case marking. No such correlation exists for SVO (subject verb object) languages. It is possible then that the mind is more likely to expect case marking when confronted with a language with SOV word order but not necessarily so if the language has SVO word order. We tested this hypothesis with 54 naive learners of Latin with English as a first language (L1). The participants were divided into two groups. One received a 100-word input treatment in Latin that contained only simple SOV sentences, and the other received the same input treatment except that the word order of the treatment sentences was SVO. After the treatment, a surprise self-paced reading test that contained grammatical and ungrammatical case-marked sentences was administered. Participants read test items that matched the word order of the treatment they received (i.e. SOV learners read SOV sentences, and SVO learners read SOV sentences). Results showed a significant slowing down on ungrammatical sentences for the SOV group but not for the SVO group. However, on a test of basic sentence comprehension in which case marking was the cue to determine who did what to whom, we found no distinction between the groups. We discuss these findings in light of how typological universals work in languages and what they could mean for language acquisition.

Recent studies indicate that young English-speaking children do not have a general understanding of the significance of SVO order in reversible sentences; that is, they seem to rely on verb-specific formulas (e.g. NPpusher – form of the verb PUSH – NPpushee) to interpret such sentences (Akhtar & Tomasello, 1997). This finding raises the possibility that young children may be open to learning non-SVO structures with novel transitive verbs. To test this hypothesis, 12 children in each of three age groups (two-year-olds, three-year-olds, and four-year-olds) were taught novel verbs, one in each of three sentence positions: medial (SVO), final (SOV), and initial (VSO). The younger age groups were equally likely to use the novel (non-English) orders spontaneously as to correct them to SVO order, whereas the oldest children consistently corrected these structures to SVO order. These results suggest that English-speaking children's acquisition of a truly general understanding of SVO order may be a gradual process involving generalization (learning) from examples. The findings are discussed in terms of recent data-driven learning accounts of grammar acquisition.

The splenorenal reflex induces changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP) and renal function. We hypothesized that, in addition to spinal pathways previously identified, these effects are also mediated through central pathways. We investigated the effect of elevated splenic venous pressure on central neural activation in intact, renal-denervated, and renal + splenic-denervated rats. Fos-labeled neurons were quantified in the nucleus of the tractus solitarius (NTS), paraventricular nucleus (PVN), supraoptic nucleus (SON), and subfornical organ (SFO) after 1-h partial splenic vein occlusion (SVO) in conscious rats bearing balloon occluders around the splenic vein, telemetric pressure transducers in the gastric vein (splenic venous pressure), and abdominal aorta catheters (MAP). SVO stimulated Fos expression in the PVN and SON, but not NTS or SFO of intact rats. Renal denervation abolished this response in the parvocellular PVN, while renal + splenic denervation abolished activation in the magnocellular PVN and the SON. In renal-denervated animals, SVO depressed Fos expression in the NTS and increased expression in the SFO, responses that were abolished by renal + splenic denervation. In intact rats, SVO also induced a fall in right atrial pressure, an increase in renal afferent nerve activity, and an increase in MAP. We conclude that elevated splenic venous pressure does induce hypothalamic activation and that this is mediated through both splenic and renal afferent nerves. However, in the absence of renal afferent input, SVO depressed NTS activation, probably as a result of the accompanying fall in cardiac preload and reduced afferent signaling from the cardiopulmonary receptors.

It is well known that the basic word order pattern of a language is closely intertwined with the syntactic realization of argument focus constituents. SVO languages exhibit a focus position at the sentence’s right periphery, SOV languages exhibit an immediately preverbal focus position. The study at hand examines both the basic word order patterns and the syntactic realization of focus in Enets, Nganasan and Dolgan. The major outcome is that Nganasan and Dolgan are much more flexible with respect to their basic word order pattern and, in consequence, exhibit both an immediately preverbal focus position and a right-peripheral focus position, whilst Enets realizes argument focus constituents almost exclusively immediately preverbally. Kokkuvõte. Chris Lasse Däbritz: Fookuse asend SOV ~ SVO variatsiooniga keeltes – tõendus eenetsi, nganassaani ja dolgaani keeltest. On üldiselt teada, et ühe keele põhiline sõnajärjestus on tihedas seoses (kitsalt) fookustatud konstituentide süntaksiga. SVO keeltes on (kitsas) fookus reali seeritud lause paremas perifeerias, SOV keeltes on (kitsas) fookus realiseeritud vahetult verbi ees. Selles artiklis uuritakse nii põhilist sõnajärjestust kui ka fookuse süntaksit eenetsi, nganassaani ja dolgaani keeltes. Uurimuse kõige olulisem tulemus on see, et nganassaani ja dolgaani keeltes on põhiline sõnajärjestus tunduvalt paindlikum kui eenetsi keeles. Sellepärast realiseeritakse nganassaani ja dolgaani keeltes (kitsalt) fookustatud konstituendid nii vahetult verbi ees kui ka lause paremas perifeerias, samas kui eenetsi keeles realiseeritakse nad ainult vahetult verbi ees. Аннотация. Крис Лассе Дэбриц: Позиция фокуса в языках с вариативным порядком слов SOV ~ SVO – данные энецкого, нганасанского и долганского языков. Как известно, базовый порядок слов в языке определяет синтаксическую позицию фокусных аргументов. В языках SVO фокусные составляющие ставятся в конце предложения, в языках SOV – непосредственно перед глаголом. В данной статье рассматриваются базовый порядок слов и позиция фокуса в энецком, нганасанском и долганском языках и показывается, что в нганасанском и долганском языках порядок слов намного более свободен и, соответственно, фокусные аргументы могут располагаться как перед глаголом, так и в конце предложения; а в энецком языке позиция фокуса – почти всегда непосредственно перед глаголом.

The majority of the extant languages have one of three dominant basic word orders: SVO, SOV or VSO. Various hypotheses have been proposed to explain this word order bias, including the existence of a universal grammar, the learnability imposed by cognitive constraints, the descent of modern languages from an ancestral protolanguage, and the constraints from functional principles. We run simulations using a multi-agent computational model to study this bias. Following a local order approach, the model simulates individual language processing mechanisms in production and comprehension. The simulation results demonstrate that the semantic structures that a language encodes can constrain the global syntax, and that local syntax can help trigger bias towards the global order SOV/SVO (or VOS/OVS).

Este artigo tem por objetivo discutir o aspecto estrutural das sentenças na Libras, língua oficial da comunidade surdo brasileira, que atualmente tem sido aprendida por surdos e ouvintes. A pesquisa apoia-se nos trabalhos de Brito (1995), Quadros (1999), Quadros e Karnopp (2004), dentre outros, que postulam que essa língua de modalidade visual-espacial organiza espacialmente os constituintes da sentença, tendo como ordem básica a estrutura SVO e a partir desta outras ordenações sintáticas são construídas. O trabalho conceitua o que se entende por sintaxe e explora o componente verbal da Libras, por este ter um papel preponderante na organização das sentenças, que podem ser SVO, OSV, SOV e VOS.

In this article I discuss the comparative method in formal linguistics when applied to word order phenomena in Italian, English and German. I argue that the comparison has to rest on sound theoretical basis in order to reach interesting conclusions. These languages might prima facie all look Subject- Verb-Object – SVO – languages, with some puzzling issues arising in German. At a closer look however, I will show that English and Italian pattern together as their basic word order – i.e., SVO – goes, as opposed to German, an SOV language. Conversely, English and German pattern together with respect to a property typical, even if not exclusively so, of Germanic languages, i.e. Verb Second.

ABSTRACTTwo studies investigated syntactic productivity in three-year-old Mandarin speakers' use of verbs in the SVO and SbaOV constructions. In Study 1, children were taught novel verbs in one construction and assessed for their production in the other construction. Children produced verbs taught in the ba constructions in SVO utterances, but showed order effects when producing verbs taught in SVO constructions in ba utterances. In Study 2, children described animated scenes either with structural priming (i.e., after hearing verbs in SVO or ba constructions). Children demonstrated structural priming, producing more SVO and ba utterances, respectively, directly after hearing verbs in these constructions. These results indicate that Mandarin speaking three-year-olds demonstrate productive knowledge of both SVO and SbaOV constructions. Their ability to override the predominant input frequency of SVO runs counter to a purely usage-based account of early acquisition of grammar.

This research examines Subscription Video On-Demand (SVOD) using Netflix as one of the main examples that has seen a dramatic increase in usage in recent years compared to the traditional way of viewing content through television. Using focus group sessions and an online survey, a qualitative analysis approach is used by way of a thematic analysis to elaborate and gain insight into the phenomenon of SVOD within our society which has allowed viewers to alter time shifting and self-scheduling habits. Watching online film and television over the internet, forces the breakdown of the traditional value chain of viewing methods as well as consumption of it. This research aims to narrow this research gap surrounding SVOD. The results will be used to add value to the research area of this growing and changing phenomenon of online TV consumption with SVOD.
Aquesta recerca estudia el vídeo a la carta de pagament (SVOD, en anglès) a partir de l'exemple de Netflix, el qual ha vist un increment considerable de consum al llarg dels últims anys, especialment comparat amb els mitjans de comunicació tradicionals. A través de focus group i una enquesta en línia, es fa una anàlisi qualitativa que parteix d'un estudi temàtic, a fi d'elaborar i obtenir una idea del fenomen de l'SVOD dintre de la nostra societat. Aquest fenomen ha permès als espectadors alterar els hàbits d'horari d'ús i d'autoprogramació. Veure pel·licules i televisió a través d'internet força a trencar la cadena tradicional de valor dels mètodes de visionat així com el consum dels mateixos.

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the difference between SVO and OVS sentences in spoken Russian, which is a language with flexible word order although the basic order is SVO. Two experiments were conducted to understand the nature of intonation. Experiment 1 shows that the Subject appears as kontrast in OVS sentences, and as background in SVO sentences. The F0 curve rises in the Object position when the Subject is kontrast in OVS sentences. The analysis of the results of Experiment 2 shows that the initial element of the sentence plays an important role in intonation. When it is kontrasted, it always has higher (Hz) frequency pitch accent than the final element. There is no difference between SVO and OVS sentences in this respect because the initial element has high pitch accent, whether it is the Subject or the Object. The verb has no pitch accent and it has a flat intonation regardless of the WO of the sentence (SVO, OVS).

O presente estudo tem como objetivo investigar o papel da prosódia no processamento sintático. Nossa hipótese é a de que a prosódia não só impede a ambiguidade, mas também guia o parser, fornecendo pistas para a construção da estrutura sintática no curso do processamento realizado por adultos. Elegemos como objetos de análise as estruturas de Tópico (de argumento interno) e de SVO (não topicalizado) porque, no contraste entre ambas, as pistas prosódicas são acessíveis desde o início da sentença. Um conjunto de experimentos foi realizado com os seguintes objetivos: na produção: (a) verificar as propriedades prosódicas de sentenças com estruturas SVO e de Tópico em tarefas de leitura; (b) investigar se há uma preferência por uma prosódia default; na compreensão: (c) verificar se há preferência por uma ou outra estrutura, a partir da comparação do tempo de processamento de estímulos auditivos com e sem pistas prosódicas; (d) verificar se a modificação dessas pistas poderia "enganar" as escolhas do parser. Para a construção dos estímulos experimentais, foram selecionadas palavras que podem pertencer tanto à categoria Verbo, quanto à categoria Adjetivo. Construímos sentenças com os dois tipos de estruturas sintáticas: Tópico – [A criança SUJA]IPa madrinha mandou ela para o banho; e SVO – [A criança]ϕ [SUJA a madrinha] com a comida do almoço. Os resultados dos experimentos de produção revelam que há pistas acústicas que diferenciam os dois tipos de estrutura. Além disso, sugerem também que há uma preferência, na leitura em voz alta, pela prosódia SVO quando o participante desconhece o sentido completo das sentenças. Quanto aos experimentos de compreensão, também parece haver uma preferência pela estrutura de SVO quando as pistas prosódicas não estão acessíveis para o ouvinte. Por outro lado, quando a prosódia é informativa, os resultados sugerem que esta não só guia o parser na escolha da estrutura sintática, mas também poderia “enganá-lo”, levando ao processamento de uma estrutura diferente nos casos de incongruência entre sintaxe e prosódia. Em conjunto, os resultados revelam que, por um lado, parece haver uma estrutura default SVO, mas, por outro, a prosódia de Tópico parece impedir, em certa medida, a ativação desse default. Com os tipos de estruturas analisadas e com base nos resultados experimentais, defendemos que a prosódia guia essas projeções, já que as pistas acústicas estão acessíveis desde o início das sentenças. De acordo com a proposta de Bocci (2008), as propriedades de Tópico estariam codificadas na sintaxe, guiando a derivação sintática; tais propriedades, por sua vez, seriam disponibilizadas, previamente, via prosódia. Os resultados obtidos são discutidos à luz de três abordagens teóricas: a hipótese do Bootstrapping Prosódico/Fonológico (MORGAN & DEMUTH, 1996; CHRISTOPHE et al., 1997, 2008), que sustenta que pistas prosódicas promovem a segmentação do fluxo de fala, facilitando o processamento (no caso dos adultos); o Modelo Integrado da Computação On-line (CORRÊA & AUGUSTO, 2006; 2007), segundo o qual a árvore sintática vai se formando no curso do processamento; e o Modelo de Compreensão Auditiva da Linguagem (FRIEDERICI, 2011), que prevê a interação da prosódia com a sintaxe no nível neurofisiológico.
This study investigates the role of prosody in syntactic processing. Our hypothesis is that prosody could not only prevent ambiguity, but it also guides the parser, providing cues to the syntactic tree construction during linguistic processing by adults. We elected Topic (of intern argument) and SVO (nontopicalized) structures because in contrast with both of them, the prosodic cues are accessible from the beginning of the sentences in both structures. A set of experiments was conducted according to the following objectives: in production: (a) to verify the prosodic properties of SVO and Topic sentences in reading experiments; (b) to investigate if there is a preference for a default prosody; in comprehension: (c) to verify the preference for each structure by comparing listening reaction time with or without prosodic cues; (d) to verify if the modification of these cues could "trick" the parser choices. For the construction of experimental stimuli, words that may belong to Verb category as well as Adjective category were selected. We built sentences with both types of syntactic tree: Topic – [A criança SUJA]IP a madrinha mandou ela para o banho; and SVO – [A criança]ϕ [SUJA a madrinha] com a comida do almoço. (Topic – The dirty child was sent to have a shower by their godmother; and SVO – The child soils their godmother with the lunch food.) The results of the production experiments revealed that there are acoustic cues which differentiate both types of structure. Furthermore they suggest that there is a preference, when reading it aloud, for SVO prosody production when participants are not aware of the full meaning of the sentences. As regards the comprehension experiments it also showed a preference for SVO structure when prosodic cues are not accessible to the listener. On the other hand, when the prosody is informative, the results suggest that not only it guides the parser in syntactic structure choices, but also it could “trick” and mislead it to the processing of a different structure in the cases of incongruity between syntax and prosody. Altogether the results reveal that, on the one hand, it seems to have a SVO default structure, but, on the other hand, the Topic prosody seems to prevent, in a way, the activation of this default. Having the analyzed structures and based on the experimental results, we indorse that the prosody guides these projections, since the acoustic cues are accessible from the beginning of sentences. According to Bocci’s proposal (2008), Topic properties would be coded in syntax, guiding the syntactic derivation; in turn, these properties would be previously available via prosody. The obtained results are discussed in the light of three theoretical approaches: the Prosodic/Phonological Bootstrapping Hypothesis (MORGAN & DEMUTH, 1996; CHRISTOPHE et al., 1997; 2008), which holds that prosodic cues promote speech stream segmentation, facilitating linguistic processing (in case of adults); the Integrated Model of Online Computation (CORRÊA & AUGUSTO, 2006; 2007), according to which the syntactic tree is created during the course of processing; and the Auditory Comprehension Model of Language (FRIEDERICI, 2011), which foresees the prosody-syntax interaction on the neurophysiological level.

Este trabalho traz o estudo de estruturas que apresentam posposição do sujeito e a influência das mesmas no processo de concordância verbal em gêneros escritos de imprensa do Português Brasileiro (PB), datados entre 2008 e 2010. Para tanto, selecionamos, como corpus desta pesquisa, os gêneros editorial, carta dos leitores, noticiário, coluna e entrevista – seções que apresentam traços mais informais e subjetivos de seus usuários/leitores, dos jornais Folha de São Paulo, Jornal da Tarde, Notícias Já e Diário de São Paulo e das revistas Istoé Gente, Época, Malu Mulher e Aparecida, por estes serem meios de comunicação de imprensa escrita, direcionados a diferentes leitores e com grande circulação nacional. Fizemos um levantamento das ocorrências de sujeitos pospostos nos gêneros escritos de imprensa, analisamos os dados, levantando, ao final, nossas considerações sobre a relação posição do sujeito X concordância verbal. Trazemos a hipótese de que o sujeito posposto na escrita, assim como ocorre na fala, desfavoreça a CV, pois, por não se apresentar em posição de tópico e não condizer com a definição dada pela Gramática Tradicional, “ser de quem se diz alguma coisa”, características estas principais para a identificação do sujeito em uma oração, o usuário da língua tende a identificá-lo como sendo outro termo da oração, havendo ou não um termo que ocupe a posição inicial da oração em seu lugar, não realizando, com isto, a concordância entre o verbo e este SN sujeito pós-verbal
This research brings a study of structures which present postposition of the subject and the influence of those in the process of verbal agreement in written genres Press of the Brazilian Portuguese (BP), dated between 2008 and 2010. To this end, we selected as a corpus of this research, the gender’s editorial, letter from readers, news, column and interview – sections that have more informal and subjective features of their users / readers, from Folha de São Paulo newspaper, Jornal da Tarde, Notícias Já, Diário de São Paulo and from the magazines Istoé Gente, Época, Malu Mulher and Aparecida, for they being means of printing media, towards different readers and with a large national circulation. We did a survey of the occurrences of subjects postponed in written genres of press. We analyzed the data, increasing, at the end, our thoughts about the relation position of the subject X verbal agreement. We bring the hypothesis that the subject postponed in writing, as well as in speech, does not favour the CV, then, for not present itself in a position of topic and does not match the definition given by the Traditional Grammar, being from whom says to be something” these characteristics are major for the identification of the subject in a sentence. The language user tends to identify it as another word of the sentence, whether there is or not a term that occupies its initial positions in the sentence, without achievement, with that, the agreement between the verb and the post-verbal subject SN

Анотація:
Inom psykologin har det länge varit intressant att studera personligheter för att förklara individers beteenden. Ett välstuderat beteendemönster är om personer är prosociala eller inte. Prosociala är generösa mot andra och icke-prosociala ser till sin egen vinning. Tidigare studier har visat att personlighetsegenskaper som Big Five och socioekonomisk status kan påverka en persons generositet och förmodligen predicera prosocialitet. Syftet med studien var att undersöka vilka personlighetsegenskaper som predicerar att en person är prosocial. Social önskvärdhet kontrolleras för att se om personer som beter sig socialt önskvärt även var prosociala. Social Value Orientation, ett ekonomiskt spel, användes i studien för att mäta om en person var prosocial. Resultatet baserades på 131 undersökningsdeltagares svar på en enkät. En multipel regressionsanalys visade att ingen prediktor förutom socioekonomisk status var relaterad till om en person var prosocial. Dock gick samtliga variabler i förutspådd riktning vilket är värt att lyfta fram.

Straight vegetable oil (SVO) fuels such as palm oil, animal fat oil and waste vegetable oil were tested as fuels in a single-cylinder diesel engine to evaluate applicability to medium-speed diesel engines. Fuel-related properties of the SVO were assessed and compared with conventional marine diesel fuel oil (MDO). The total acid number (TAN) of the SVO fuels changed during a short interval in a drying oven which heated the SVO fuels to 170 degrees Celsius for several weeks. The SVO have not gone rancid any further after reaching limit. And the TAN of the SVO fuels was not related to corrosion of the parts. The SVO fuels needed to be heated to an appropriate temperature to use as fuel of the engine since the SVO fuels are more viscous than conventional diesel fuels. Both the injection period and the injection pressure increased due to low heating values of the SVO fuels. By the same token, fuel oil consumption increased over 10%. The overall exhaust emissions were lower with the SVO fuels, but NOx emission was as much as MDO at the higher loads.
