AbstractCrop wild relatives (CWR) are a vital source of traits for crop improvement – therefore, conserving CWR diversity is critical to ensure food, nutrition and economic security. Efficient CWR conservation planning is a critical first step to maintain this natural resource for future use. The development of National Strategic Action Plans (NSAPs) for the conservation and sustainable use of CWR is an effective means of conservation planning and also plays an important role in sensitizing policy makers and other stakeholders to the importance of CWR. Tools to guide and facilitate countries in CWR national conservation planning and NSAP development have been prepared, namely: an ‘Interactive Toolkit for CWR Conservation Planning’, a ‘Template for the Preparation of a NSAP for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of CWR’, a ‘Template for the Preparation of a Technical Background Document for a NSAP for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of CWR’, a ‘CWR Checklist and Inventory Data Template’ and an ‘Occurrence Data Collation Template’. In this short communication, we briefly explain what these tools are, how they were developed, how they can be used and where they can be found.

Abstract The objective of the present work is to determine an optimal cropping pattern under uncertainty, which maximizes four objectives simultaneously, including net benefits (NBF), crop production (CPD), employment generation (EGN) and manure utilization (MUT). Except the objective of maximizing the NBF, the other objectives are related to sustainability. To deal with uncertainty, a multi-objective fuzzy linear programming (MOFLP) model has developed along with fuzziness in decision parameters (objective function coefficient, cost coefficients, technological coefficients and resources) and decision variables (area to be irrigated under each crop in each season) and applied the same to Jayakwadi Project Stage-I, Maharashtra, India. The present study is in the form of a successful attempt to deal with irrigation planning associated with sustainability and uncertainty.

Continuous decline of earth’s natural resources and increased use of hazardous chemical fertilizers pose a great concern for the future of agriculture. Biofertilizers are a promising alternative to hazardous chemical fertilizers and are gaining importance for attaining sustainable agriculture. Biofertilizers play a key role in increasing crop yield and maintaining long-term soil fertility, which is essential for meeting global food demand. Microbes can interact with the crop plants and enhance their immunity, growth, and development. Nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, zinc, and silica are the essential nutrients required for the proper growth of crops, but these nutrients are naturally present in insolubilized or complex forms. Certain microorganisms render them soluble and make them available to the plants. The potential microbes, their mode of action, along with their effect on crops, are discussed in this review. Biofertilizers, being cost effective, non-toxic, and eco-friendly, serve as a good substitute for expensive and harmful chemical fertilizers. The knowledge gained from this review can help us to understand the importance of microbes in agriculture and the ways to formulate these microbes as biofertilizers for sustainable crop production.

It was established in 1952 and farmers do not have access to recorded climatic information. Farmers are growing crops on a trial and error basis, hence low yields and crop loses. The objective of the study was to investigate indigenous knowledge of climatic conditions relevant for crop production using participatory techniques. Situation analysis was conducted to gain information on factors influencing crop choice. Participatory exercise was conducted with 33 of 104 of plot-holders. Farmers could identify climatic factors important for crop production and those limiting to crop performance. Hot, dry conditions during August to October and January months were limiting to crops, particularly sweet potato production. The results showed that indigenous knowledge of climate needs to be considered during agricultural development planning and scientists need to investigate linkages between modern agro-meteorology and indigenous knowledge.

The rising population and reduction in the amount of land and some other resources have created tremendous pressure on current agricultural producers to meet the increasing food demands. To cope with this challenge, certain key inputs, such as fertilizers and other chemicals, are overused, which are worsening the surroundings. This intensive agricultural production without adherence to ecological sustainability has led to declining soil health, land degradation, and severe environmental problems. So, future efforts to feed the growing population should aim for greater agricultural production within sustainable environments. In this regard, innovative steps are needed, as business-as-usual policies lack the potential to cope with these challenges. The concept of agricultural sustainability and various soil and crop management strategies (SCMS) that have been designed to optimize crop yield under sustainable environmental conditions are discussed, including nutrient management, site specific nutrient management (SSNM), integrated nutrient management (INM), integrated soil fertility management (ISFM), integrated soil-crop system management (ISSM), ridge-furrow mulching systems (RFMS), sustainable water management (SWM), conservation agriculture (CA), sustainable land management (SLM), vertical/sky farming, and integrated crop management, and breeding strategies as well as other approaches combined with technological and behavioural changes. The present review suggests that a sustainable production system can be developed by combining the multifaceted efforts under SCMS practices with short- and long-term preventive measures. Reducing chemicals’ usage, such as that of fertilizers and pesticides, plus improvements in the crop input use efficiency could minimize greenhouse gases emissions while protecting the environment. Sustainable agriculture holds promise for humankind and the planet Earth, and it can be successful if all developed and developing nations stand together to seek ‘our common future’ to produce more food while generating less environmental pressure.

The motivation for this work is to study complex real-world scenarios and provide tools that can actually improve decision-making in those problems. To do so, we mainly adopt techniques from the fields of Operations Research and Combinatorial Optimization. In this dissertation, we focus on three real-world applications from different industries that can be modeled as combinatorial optimization problems and address them with operations research techniques. The dissertation is divided in chapters, each of which is related to a different topic. In Chapter 1, a problem concerning the transportation of biological samples from draw centers to a main laboratory for analysis is presented. The problem arises from a healthcare application in Bologna, Italy, where the healthcare authority decided to centralize the analysis of all biological samples of the area to a main laboratory, in order to exploit economies of scales and reduce the costs for samples’ analysis. Of course, such an improvement goal also created a new complex problem: all the samples must be transported from draw centers to the main lab. A fleet of vehicle is available for the transportation and must collect the samples from draw centers during given times of the day and deliver them within a certain time, since samples are perishable. Vehicles can also exploit the existence of dedicated centers that can extend the lifespan of the samples and where samples can be transferred from one vehicle to another. It is clear from this brief description how hard it could be to decide which is the routing of all the vehicles which minimizes the traveling costs while delivering all samples on time. For this problem we developed different mixed integer linear programming models, metaheuristic algorithms, and grouping policies for the samples that are able to tackle the complexity of the problem and improve routing decisions. All methods have been tested through an extensive computational campaign using real-world data, showing the effectiveness of the proposed approaches. In Chapter 2, a problem related to the agricultural industry is presented. The problem arises from a real-world application in Italy and it is that of planning the use of the available land of a farm for a given number of years, given a set of crops that can be grown. The objective is to maximize the farmer’s profit, but the farmer is subject to several rules both from an agronomic and from a regulation point of view. In fact, many constraints exist regarding agronomic principles, such as maximum replanting, botanical family constraints and crop rotation issues. One of the goals of this work is indeed that of evaluating the risks and benefits of following or not the best practices regarding crop rotation issues in the Mediterranean pedo-climatic context. Furthermore, we want to evaluate the effectiveness of public and private initiatives regarding sustainable agriculture. In fact, it is more and more important nowadays to face these challenges in the food supply chain, which is one of the most discussed industries when it comes to sustainability. In particular, we analyze two different initiatives, namely the Common Agricultural Policy by the European Union and “La Carta del Mulino” by Barilla Group S.p.A.. Both initiatives introduce economic incentives for the farmers following virtuous behaviors from a sustainability point of view. Practically, these behaviors are constraints increasing the complexity of the problem and the difficulty in the decision-making process. For this problem, we will give a formal characterization and study its complexity, also analyzing special cases. We will also present a network-flow based model to solve a special case of the problem and integer linear programming models developed to solve three variants accounting for different sustainability scenarios. Real-world data from 23 Italian farms were used in an extensive computational campaign. The analysis of the results shows that the models can be helpful tools for farmers to plan their production and for authorities to evaluate the effectiveness (and efficiency) of their sustainability initiatives. In Chapter 3, we discuss a problem concerning the sequencing of unreliable jobs on parallel machines. Even if the problem is not taken from a specific application, it may have several applications in real-world scenarios, such as in manufacturing and planning of complex computations on multi-processors computers. In this problem, we have n unreliable jobs providing a reward when successfully completed, but each job has a probability of not being carried out. We have m parallel identical machines at our disposal, and we want to schedule the jobs on the machines in order to maximize the total expected reward. To increase the probability of completing the jobs, we create m copies of each job and schedule each copy on a different machine. For this problem, we will present a complexity analysis showing that the problem is NP-complete for two machines. For the problem with two machines, we derived some theoretical properties and developed a quadratic integer programming model, a tabu search algorithm, and an upper bound based on the Three-Dimensional Assignment problem. A computational campaign on different sets of instances shows that the tabu search outperforms the model. Then we focused on the general case with m machines. In particular, we developed several heuristics and proved some theoretical results, including the worst case performance guarantee of two heuristics. We also devised a generalized tabu search algorithm and a new, improved, upper bounding scheme based on a relaxation of the problem. Computational experiments are performed for the new methods on the problems with two and three machines. The results show that good optimality gaps are reached on all the instances.

The sustainability in agriculture can be hampered by inadequate management, such as in the practice of monocultures, or by degradation of pastures. In both situations, the productivity drops. In contrast, the production system based on the adoption of Crop-Livestock Integration rotation of crops has many benefits, such as the diversified food production, improvement of the physical, chemical and biological soil properties, increased stability production, replenishment of organic matter, reducing costs of agricultural activity due to the optimization of the use of inputs, control weeds, pests and diseases. It is noted the need for planning actions that have to be implemented in the adoption of this management, because the system of production based on the ILP is complex, in order for the framer to obtain success. The objective of this thesis is to develop and to implement a linear programming model (PL) that will provide as a result a schedule with the best selection of crops in each glebe per period and with the greatest weight gain of each animal. As well as in other areas, the PL in agriculture aims to obtain a solution that provides the best efficiency in the use of resources, since they are increasingly scarce. Thus, it is important to search for solutions that provide as a result the ideal combination between them and that will lead to better performances in agriculture, generating higher productivity and profitability. The linear programming model was developed from empirical work conducted by Alvarenga and Neto (2008) at Embrapa Maize and Sorghum research center (Sete Lagoas, MG) in an area of 24 hectares. For the implementation of the computational model data on agricultural suitability and weight gain of the animal in each period and in each glebe were needed. In order to test the mathematical model developed, values for agricultural suitability and of weight gain of animal were generated at random using the solver of MATLAB 7.4. With this, it was possible to perform the implementation of the computational linear programming model in MATLAB. There were conducted two trials; the first considering four periods, four tracts and transit of two animals, and the second with ten periods, four tracts and transit of three animals. The results show that the linear programming model is consistent with the empirical work conducted by Alvarenga and Neto (2008). The linear programming model satisfies all the restrictions imposed, maximizes the weight gain of each animal and provides the best selection of crops

AbstractThe chapter analyses the quality of managing cultural heritage sites in Croatia, particularly those inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List, which are under growing pressure of overtourism. The analysis was performed by using qualitative and quantitative data on visitors of the UNESCO heritage and the most important impacts of tourism on destination areas, compared to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focused on tourism and heritage. The study investigates the state of safeguarding, protecting and valorizing cultural heritage in relevant documents and in practice, focusing on Dubrovnik as a case study area. The analysis revealed the insufficient plans for managing UNESCO World Heritage Sites in relevant documents and in the field, as well as lack of monitoring of tourism impacts. The selected cases in Croatia confirmed that the most common way for heritage valorization is within the framework of tourism (McKercher and du Cros, Cultural tourism. The partnership between tourism and cultural heritage management, Routledge, New York/London, 2009), where heritage is most often associated with sustainable tourism. However, desirable regenerative tourism, that repairs the harm that has already been done, is still far from the present situation and it will require much effort in its planning, designing tools for its implementation and its management to achieve it in the near future.

Technological innovations during the recent centuries have enabled us to significantly boost agricultural production to feed the rapidly increasing global population. While advances in digital technologies triggered the onset of the fourth revolution in agriculture, we also have several challenges such as limited cropland, diminishing water resources, and climate change, underscoring the need for unprecedented measures to achieve agricultural resilience to support the world population. Geographic information system (GIS), along with other partner technologies such as remote sensing, global positioning system, artificial intelligence, computational systems, and data analytics, has been playing a pivotal role in monitoring crops and in implementing optimal and targeted management practices towards improving crop productivity. Here we have reviewed the diverse applications of GIS in agriculture that cover the entire pipeline from land-use planning to crop-soil-yield monitoring to post-harvest operations. GIS, in combination with digital technologies and through new and emerging areas of applications, is enabling the realization of precision farming and sustainable food production goals.

Millions of people in Africa require sufficient food for healthy living. However, inefficient farming practices are making a lot more people hungry and poor. Simultaneously, the population keeps on increasing. The legitimate question that this study seeks to address is how the production capacity can meet the needs of the increasing population in the future. The chapter examines the increase in population growth and its consequences on food production with the consideration of the theory of population growth by Thomas Malthus. The result of time series data analyzed shows that population growth is increasing at a high rate whereas food production growth is increasing at a decreasing rate. The trend seems to confirm that the Malthus population theory is still relevant in Africa. The study recommends that stewards and policymakers invest immensely in agriculture to improve technology, skills, methods, and know-how to boost food production and invest in women in adopting family planning to decrease population growth for the solution of food deficiency.

In the last twenty years, the territory that comprises the Vega Baja of the Segura River (Alicante province) has experienced a drastic change in terms of how space is occupied. This is observable in the introduction of new uses that modify the configuration patterns of traditional settlements. This paper presents a typology characterization and classification of the evolution of traditional rural settlements which includes new emerging patterns of urban settlements in the Vega Baja’s context. This process has significantly impacted the landscape and the environment, as well as affecting how the local population relates to their living environment. The alluvial territory of the Vega Baja of the Segura River has been historically developed as a result of the expansion of its functional network systems —water canals, pathways, and settlements— which enable the occupation and colonization of extensive areas of marshy land. The territorial organization of this study’s area, developed over the course of eleven centuries, remained relatively stable until the 1990’s. However, in the last twenty-five years, the local economy has undergone restructuring, producing a mind-shift among local communities and resulting in a meaningful loss of crop production surface to make way for town-planning developments. The geographical area of this study is characterized by its intensive irrigated agricultural pattern. It is one of the last remaining Huerta European landscapes identified in the Dobris Report. Therefore, a more comprehensive and integrated approach to preserve identity and local cultural values is required so as to propose a sustainable economic development framework.References Antrop, M. During the past fifty years, Colombia has endured an internal armed conflict. It has left as a result massive forced displacements, destruction of the social capital and indiscriminate logging of forests in regions affected by illicit crops and a strong presence of illegal armed groups supported by drug trafficking. In spite of a number of national policies and programs against illicit crops, the issue still persists, along with all the social implications it carries with. This paper presents a model for planning rural development projects in regions with illicit crops. The methodology applied is based on the model "Working With People (WWP)" and integrates the knowledge and experience gathered throughout the implementation of various projects in the region of La Macarena, Colombia. It takes into account eight years of continuous work with the communities, in one of the areas of greatest social unrest in Colombia, due to illicit crops, on-going criminal activity and violence by illegal armed groups and a weak presence of State institutions. Some of the factors hindering successful advancement of rural development policies include the breakdown of the social fabric, deterioration of moral values, family disintegration and lack of confidence. The conceptual framework applied integrates elements from policy analysis and social learning (Friedmann, 1991; Cazorla et al., 2015), proposed as a reaction from traditional and ineffective social reform models (Friedmann, 1991) developed in this type of scenarios. Following a thorough review of rural development planning theories regarding illicit crops areas, we carried out an analysis of the experience in the Macarena region under the WWP model. The results show the effects of the WWP model and the necessity to develop a strategy for the eradication of illicit crops in a post-conflict scenario, taking into account various social variables. Findings denote a greater relevance of the ethical-social and political-contextual dimensions in terms of sustainable rural development. Trust building, the enhancement of social relationships and direct interaction with target communities are the basic factors to the reconstruction of the social fabric and value systems, fostering sustainable rural development and stabilization.
