Reducing the costs of the transport company is one of the key issues in the management of the organization. There are standard ways to reduce the costs of transport companies, the article proposes options for reducing costs through the interaction of several modes of transport, namely, rail and road. The article discusses options for the transportation of goods by a trucking company. For the purpose of reducing operating costs, it is proposed to combine the use of road and rail transport on certain sections of the route of routes of various lengths. The authors made a conclusion about the dependence of the operating costs on the distance when using the above types of transport.

Recently, MLS (Mobile Laser Scanning) has been successfully used in a road maintenance. In this paper, we present the application of MLS for the inspection of clearance along railway tracks of West Japan Railway Company. Point clouds around the track are captured by MLS mounted on a bogie and rail position can be determined by matching the shape of the ideal rail head with respect to the point cloud by ICP algorithm. A clearance check is executed automatically with virtual clearance model laid along the extracted rail. As a result of evaluation, the accuracy of extracting rail positions is less than 3 mm. With respect to the automatic clearance check, the objects inside the clearance and the ones related to a contact line is successfully detected by visual confirmation.

In this paper, we develop a multi-objective integrated optimization method for feeder buses of rail transit based on realistic considerations. We propose a bus stop selection method that considers the influence of shared motorcycles, which can score the importance of alternative bus stops and select those with the highest scores as objectives. The objective of the model in this paper is to minimize both the travel costs of passengers and the operating costs of the bus company. This is achieved by optimizing feeder bus routes, the frequency of departures, and interchange discounts to enhance the connectivity between feeder buses and rail transit. In addition, to ensure the feasibility of generated routes in the real road network, a genetic algorithm encoded with priority is used to solve this model. We use the Xingyao Road subway station in Kunming as an example, and the results show that the optimization method is effective.

The purpose of the article is to review the main financial indicators of JSC “NC “KTZ”. The analysis of dynamics and structure of active and passive balance of the company is studied. The official documents that regulate the activities of the national company are studied. On the basis of statistical data and reports of the company, using the method of financial planning, the study of the main indicators of JSC “NC “KTZ”. The analysis of planned and actual values of indicators noted that the company needs to improve the system of financial planning and budgeting. Finally the conclusions are made and the main problems of sustainable development of the company are stated. JSC “NC “KTZh” is a transport and logistics holding, the history of formation and development of which began in Soviet times. Because of repeated transformations and reorganizations, the holding currently carries out sea and rail transportation, renders services of transport and logistics centers; provides airport, maritime, road and rail infrastructure services. The functions of JSC “NC “KTZh” include acting as an operator of the main railway network, transportation of goods and passengers. The authors of the article note that the unstable dynamics of indicators for the main types of services directly affects the profitability of the company. As before, the main revenue is generated by cargo transportation, primarily transit transportation.

At present, the world is changing very dynamically, which radically changes the geography of existing freight traffic. There is a process of redistribution of existing cargo flows, there is an active search for new alternative options for cargo delivery, and new logistics chains are being formed. In the rapidly changing conditions of the country's economy, the importance of road and rail transport is increasing. Road transport is the fastest reconstructing channel in the development of new transport chains. The importance of rail transport also remains very high, especially for longdistance cargo transportation. Improving the efficiency of logistics companies in the construction of new transport corridors directly depends on the choice of the company's business strategy and the development of the company as a whole. This article presents tools to assess the effectiveness of logistics companies. It offers methods for performing such analysis, allowing to conclude the required number of transport infrastructure facilities, about the choice of the type of transport necessary for the full development of a given cargo flow in the new supply chains.

Currently, there is a process of redistribution of existing cargo flows, an active search is underway for alternative options for the delivery of goods, and actual logistics chains are being formed. Logistics companies in the context of existing prohibitions and restrictions are forced to find new markets. The long-term vector of cooperation from the western side is moving to the east. In these rapidly changing conditions for the functioning of the country’s economy, the importance of domestic road and rail transport is growing. Road transport is the most rapidly rebuilding in the development of new transport chains. The importance of rail transport also remains high, especially when transporting goods over long distances. Improving the efficiency of logistics providers directly depends on the choice of business strategy and the development of the company as a whole.Tools are presented to assess the effectiveness of logistics providers. Methods are proposed for performing such an analysis, allowing to draw conclusions about the required number of transport infrastructure facilities, the choice of transport mode for the full development of a given cargo flow. The result of the study was the analysis of a way to minimize the costs of logistics providers using the method of comparative analysis. This method takes into account the costs of maintaining transport infrastructure facilities, maintaining and servicing vehicles, organizing transportation, by searching for the break-even point of a logistics company.

Regional cooperation in rail transport can help participating countries diversify their trade patterns. Improved rail transport can also help attract foreign direct investment, increase participation in global production networks and the scale of related trade in manufactured goods, and diversify exports. Improved rail infrastructure will increase global competitiveness and spur economic development. In addition, improved rail infrastructure will help regional cooperation and integration through improved connectivity between people, goods and services. The operation is carried out by a railway company, providing transport between train stations or freight customer facilities. Power is provided by locomotives which either draw electric power from a railway electrification system or produce their own power, usually by diesel engines or, historically, steam engines. Most tracks are accompanied by a signalling system. Railways are a safe land transport system when compared to other forms of transport. Railway transport is capable of high levels of passenger and cargo utilisation and energy efficiency but is often less flexible and more capital-intensive than road transport, when lower traffic levels are considered. Railways are a climate-smart and efficient way to move people and freight. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is a company engaged in land transportation. PT KAI employees work in units, one of which is the JJ unit in charge of recording and checking roads and railways. PT KAI (Persero) has implemented an e-Office Information System to facilitate employees' work, but the system does not fully support the JJ Unit. As a result, the JJ Unit has problems where there is a lack of time efficiency when recording work tools, staffing structures, and tracking data that still use Microsoft Excel. One solution to this problem was created: a web-based Rail Road and Bridge Unit Information System at PT KAI (Persero) Divre IV Tanjung Karang. The purpose of this research is to facilitate data searches and data updates needed in the JJ Unit. The stages of this research are data collection, system design, system development, and system testing. The result of this research is the information system of the Rail Road and Bridge Unit at PT KAI (Persero) Divre IV Tanjung Karang based on the Web. This information system was developed with PHP programming, supported by MySQL as the database. The Balsamiq MockUp application was used to design the system interface in the design phase. The system has been tested with BlackBox testing and is supported by results that are as expected. This information system has four levels of users: Senior Manager, Junior Manager, Head Office Staff, and users in each resort and station. Thus, it can be concluded that the Website-based Rail Road and Bridge Unit Information System has been successfully developed using the Waterfall method and using the PHP programming language assisted by MySQL as a database.

The purpose of the current study was to optimize the activities of logistics companies by determining the feasibility of developing its own fleet of rolling stock, warehouses and terminals of a logistics company. Materials and methods. Methods of system analysis, comparison, systems theory, logistics, outsourcing, as well as the architecture of logistics systems with the participation of providers were used. The tools for evaluating the efficiency of logistics companies are presented, which allow us to draw conclusions about the required number of transport infrastructure facilities, about the choice of the type of transport necessary for the full development of a given cargo flow in new supply chains. Results. The analysis of the method of minimizing the costs of logistics companies, using the method of comparative analysis, which takes into account the costs of maintaining transport infrastructure facilities, the costs of maintaining and servicing vehicles, the costs of organizing transportation, by searching for the break-even point of a logistics company. Conclusion. A methodology has been developed for assessing the feasibility of involving a logistics provider in the implementation of transportation and transferring part of the work to it on outsourcing terms.

Subject area The subject areas are strategic management, transportation management and business management. Study level/applicability This case is useful for undergraduate and postgraduate level students majoring in strategic management, transportation management and business management. Case overview Etihad Rail Company is planning to implement a mega infrastructure project in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They have included freight rail system as part of the 2030 Abu Dhabi economic vision and the UAE national Charter 2021. The plan is to link the UAE’s main cities via the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) border. This ambitious project presents a formidable task for the Etihad Rail Company and the region, as there is no previous railway history of this kind. The project requires coordination of rail standards from East of Ghwefatet and the Northern Emirates cities and will ultimately be combined with the Western Saudi Arabia borders. The transportation system in the region will be improved greatly with the introduction of a cargo and passenger railway system in addition to the current road system and other means of transportation. The Etihad railway network is the first infrastructure project in the UAE, and it will bring economic, strategic, social and environmental changes to the country. This case aims to present an overview of the strategic management dimensions of the Etihad Rail and the processes involved. This case will analyze whether Etihad’s top management team should make a decision to focus only on freight rail or to include passenger transportation as well. Many questions will be addressed in this paper such as the following: What steps should Etihad take to start passenger rail? Will economical, strategic and environmental aspects affect it? And if so, how? The case will focus on the analysis of the different aspects of Etihad Rail by using strategic management tools as guidance for implementation and determining its success factors. Expected learning outcomes In this case, the students can learn and understand the purpose of commencing cargo rail projects in the region; discuss the mechanisms which help in promoting sustainability and the business growth of Etihad Rail; and identify the challenges and issues freight rail may face in terms of legal, economic and environmental aspects and identify and alternative solutions. Transport plays a pivotal role within the South African economy as it enables the country to achieve economic growth. The transport industry does not only facilitate the movement of freight and people, it also employs a great number of individuals and forms a major part of South Africa‟s GDP. The 8th Annual State of Logistics Survey for South Africa indicated that transport costs were accountable for 6.8 per cent of the country‟s GDP in 2010. The importance of the transport industry necessitates that the industry is operated efficiently and effectively. Transport mode choices are not only made based on transportation costs but various other factors are affecting how companies choose the mode of transport for their freight movement requirements. Other factors that are considered include transit time, reliability, accessibility, capability and security/safety. Opportunity costs should also be considered when choosing a mode of transport. There are various different types of opportunity costs that exist within the supply chain, these include the opportunity cost associated with poor service levels, the opportunity cost of returning a vehicle without a backhaul, opportunity costs due to delays, the opportunity cost of holding inventory and lost sales opportunity costs. As transportation costs are not the only factor that companies consider when making a modal choice decision, many companies within South Africa have been moving their goods off rail and onto road. This study highlights the importance of determining the impact that an inefficient mode of transport has on a company‟s transportation model and costs. The main focus of this study is to determine the logistics opportunity cost of using road transport within a mining company. A case study approach is followed as the study aims to present a complex problem experienced by one company to be analysed and presented in an easily understandable format. All the data and company information used within this study was supplied by company DKVL. Data was collected through unstructured personal interviews and specific questions were developed for each person interviewed. The data was triangulated and verified through the use of company DKVL‟s financial statements. From the results of this study, the logistics opportunity cost associated with the mode of transport is substantial. This necessitates the need for companies to revise their transport mode choice on a regular basis as it has a major impact not only on their transportation costs, but also on their inventory holding and carbon emissions. Based on the findings of this study, Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) should not only focus on expanding its existing capacity, it should also focus on improving its customer service delivery. By providing poor service delivery, companies will not shift their freight back onto rail and will rather choose to use road transport to receive the benefit of reliability and flexibility, even if it is a more expensive mode of transport. The knock-on effect of companies choosing to use road transport as opposed to rail transport is significant. The quality of South African roads will continue to deteriorate, companies will continue to pay more to maintain and repair their vehicles and the transport industry will continue to increasingly damage the environment through increased carbon emissions. The impact of not having reliable rail transport is increased logistics costs which have a significant impact on the South African economy.

In the 1830s, Indiana undertook an ambitious internal improvements program, building the state’s first railroad and multiple canals. To complete the projects, Indiana used Irish immigrant laborers. The Irish laborers developed a reputation for brawling amongst themselves, highlighted by a riot involving 600 laborers working on the Wabash and Erie Canal in 1835. Multiple volumes of Indiana history identify the Wabash and Erie riot as a one-time event inspired by Protestant and Catholic animosity imported from Ireland. A review of the historical record, however, contradicts these long-held assumptions. Inspired by Irish traditions of faction fighting and peasant secret societies, Irish immigrant laborers formed secret societies that used violence against competitors in hopes of securing access to internal improvement jobs for their own membership. The rival secret societies, the Corkonians and the Fardowns, organized based on their provincial origins in Ireland. Examples of Corkonian and Fardown violence occurred throughout the country. In Indiana, a pattern of Corkonian and Fardown conflict resulted in skirmishes on at least three different construction sites between 1835 and 1837. In contrast to the traditional narrative, the Corkonians and Fardowns were both pioneers of the first wave of large-scale Irish Catholic immigration whose rivalry centered on job protection and economic grievances.

Ten years ago, the European Union recognized the importance of stopping further development of road freight transportation and the need for making rail freight a more prominent branch of industry. Rail transportation used to hold a more relevant position, but because of slow response to changes on the market and no investments in modernization, it now occupies only around 10% of the share in freight transportation in most EU member states. Most members have initiated the implementation of the restructuring and liberalization of rail market, with the aim of establishing a multimodal transportation network and reducing negative impact of road freight on the environment. The Croatian market is no exception, of course. It has liberalized the rail freight market since the Accession to the EU, while the rail passenger traffic is still monopolized by a company owned by the state. The Croatian national carrier HŽ Cargo has decided to face the competition by restructuring the current business and giving a sharper focus on innovation (intermodal terminals, RO-LA, and digitalization of business operations). The above-mentioned topics are analysed in the following chapter.

Abstract The Superintendent OF the Boston, Concord, and Montreal Rail road, James Elkins, was enjoying the company of Yale College ‘s James Whiton, a junior and member of the Yale Boat Club in 1852. They might well have been discussing whether the underground railroad would be suppressed by the Fugitive Slave Act passed two years before and whether the attempt to prevent blacks in southern states from achieving their freedom northward would be success ful. Elkins, though, was likely more interested in the freedom to pursue his own dream-a profitable above-ground line which would increase his passenger traffic as the railway passed from Boston to Montreal through the vacation lands of New Hampshire.

A major construction milestone of Pelješac Bridge was reached at midnight on 29 July, 2021, as the deck was connected successfully. The extra-dosed cable-stayed bridge lies in the highly active seismic region with a designed ground acceleration ag= 0.34g, so the superstructure design of this bridge abandoned the regular concrete structure with poor plasticity, compared to concrete, steel has a better capability of shocks resistance and the designer adopted a steel box-shaped girder with a quantity of steel totaling 34,700t. This accounted for almost 50% of the entire bill of quantities, making the manufacture of the steel structure, its shipment, and on-site installation critical components of the project. Besides, the steel structure was designed with the strictest execution class EXC4 based on EN 1090-2. The specification requested near-perfect requirements for the appearance of the steel box girder. During the production, this project made extensive use of various welding robots and automatic or mechanical equipment. In addition, appropriate welding technology and manufacturing procedures ensured the quality level of EXC4. The global outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic as force majeure had a serious impact on the steel structure production and transportation. Due to the shortage of cargo vessels the expense of ocean shipping increased dramatically. However, the contractor, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) overcame impossibilities beyond human control and utilized a simultaneous processing strategy by two manufacturers to decrease the construction period. At the meantime, CRBC relied on the shipment resource of its parent company China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) to deal with ship shortages in the global market. As a result, the steel structure fabrication and site installation were achieved in two years successfully. The acquired experience should be treated as a reference for similar mega sea-crossing bridge projects in future.

Currently, an Inter Urban Train project is under construction in Mexico. Given the magnitude and importance of this work, quality control is an indispensable requirement; therefore, it is necessary to meticulously review conditions that could put at risk its structural and operational safety, as well as the entire infrastructure of the project. In this sense, a campaign of Pile Integrity Tests (PIT), was carried out to verify the condition of foundation piles. According to the results of PIT tests, provided to the authors by the company in charge of these tasks, 40 foundation piles with classification D or "doubtful" were detected, corresponding to 39 supports. Due to the possible "anomalies" of the foundation piles, detected by PIT tests, the structural and geotechnical behaviour of these supports had to be assessed by monitoring its behaviour from the structural and geotechnical points of view. To carry out the above, we performed pseudo-static and dynamic numerical analysis with elastic and inelastic mathematical models. Also, ambient field vibration studies in the supports were carried out with the aim of determining their dynamic characteristics and calibrate the mathematical models.

The integration in transport informatics is facilitated by the rapid development of Information and Communication Technology. One of the realizations of the integration is Mobility as a Service (MaaS), which is proposed as a data-driven, user-centric, personalized mobility service. It integrates various forms of mobility services covering the entire travel chain. Qualitative methods have been applied in existing studies to analyse the integration of MaaS. However, a comprehensive quantitative method is still missing, which could be introduced as a supplementary tool to compare MaaS services. Therefore, we have developed a weighted elaboration method to calculate the complex integration index for MaaS systems. Three aspects are determined as variables, which are the functions of the MaaS application, involved transport modes as well as the tariff structure. Moreover, the organization as the backbone of such integration is considered as the fourth aspect. The integration phases of MaaS are introduced regarding these four aspects, then the calculation method of the complex index is developed by considering the weighted variables. Fourteen MaaS services are evaluated with the method and categorized by organization aspect. We found that public authority is proposed to be the inter-city MaaS operator, and the private company is proposed to be the MaaS operator in intra-city or national level. Our method may support decision-makers to have an abstract overview of MaaS and identify the possible development stage.

Over the years, in construction industry, BIM (building information modelling) is one of the most mentioned topics with the main question: “Do we need it?” The answer should be commonly known, like with every solution that modernizes the profession and society. BIM in linear construction projects (transportation facilities and structures, sewage/water supply) and landscape design are still “one step behind” with already accepted “BIM implementation” in AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) industry and MEP (Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) industry. With more than 10 years of experience KAP4 company is one of the leading brands in BIM – Croatia. Along with our knowledge, courage, and motivation, we successfully realized multitude projects in Croatia and Europe, mostly in AEC industry but also in linear construction projects. Through our biggest project in linear construction industry “ROUTE 6 PRISHTINE – HANI I ELEZIT” (Sections 2&3), on real life project we will show advantages of BIM implementation in road structures design (bridges, overpasses, underpasses, etc.), but also in survey data, road design and earthwork optimizations, along with challenges in process (changes in design, no BIM environment, etc.) and later BIM impact on our Client and associate designers on route. With dozens of BIM road/structure models on route we will demonstrate output results with drawings/documents full of information, improved graphic outputs, document and team design collaboration, process of design, associate designers’ collaboration and facilitating the client to follow the whole process and documentation. Hopefully, and answer to first question, do we need it.

Encouraged by the trend of model-based working, integrated practice as a new context of construction projects and the planned number of investments at the state level, the Croatian Chamber of Civil Engineers has developed specialized guidelines for Building Information Modelling approach in infrastructure projects. The guidelines were presented to the professional public in 2021 with a clear message that it is the right time for Croatian companies to implement BIM approach in their operations to increase competitiveness in domestic and foreign markets, raise the quality of design and construction and reduce construction and maintenance costs. The Guidelines describes BIM approach and procedures during design, collaboration and coordination, construction and maintenance. An overview of the most widespread BIM tools in the field of infrastructure projects, basic settings of project cooperation, a common shared environment and interoperability is given. Digital collaboration modes, types of models, levels of detail and model management complete the first part of the document. The second part of the Guidelines describes key processes in BIM implementation at the company and project level. This content provides an overview of how BIM affects the current working model and what needs to be done to move to a fully collaborative model-based infrastructure project development. The guidelines are supported by LOD tables for the most common types of buildings in infrastructure projects. In order to overcome the lag in adoption of BIM in infrastructure projects it is necessary to identify the key challenges and the most common reasons that stand in the way of its significant and frequent application. The results of research conducted so far indicate that these include lack of cooperation, costs associated with the BIM adoption, lack of knowledge and skills, software limitations, lack of compatible product information, national context for classifying product data and clearly defined standards for sharing data between project participants.

The aim of this article is to map the existing and potential solutions to achieve more innovative solutions for shared e-taxi services. As the role of mobility continues to grow, innovative means of transport need to be developed in order to reduce the number of private cars, while maximising safety. The authors collected the relevant national and European Union policies, incentives, strategies, and trends for shared electromobility. Such alternative solutions are going to be used through highly automated transport devices. Firstly, the currently available (e-) car-sharing systems and electric taxi services were compared based on different characteristics and features (efficiency, sustainability, costs etc.). One of the included examples was the TX electric taxi vehicle produced by the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC). Interviews with experts were conducted to determine initial experiences and to forecast the possible market share of e-taxis. The operational costs and CO2 emission savings as a comparison of traditional and electric taxis were calculated as part of this article. Beyond the present solutions, it is important to examine the options for the coming decades, as humanity will need to make a much greater effort than it has done so far to achieve transport-related plans and climate protection goals. In this context, the authors are looking at connected electric self-driving and the first stages of it. It can be assumed that with the spread of advanced self-driving technology the transport sector as well as other areas of life will change radically, and humanity needs to prepare for this global transformation. This change will bring new opportunities; the future of transportation will be about autonomous vehicles. The authors compile a systematic overview of such innovative technologies with complex effects to explore their opportunities and threats. Finally, the authors aim to provide a summary about the conditions for the use of innovative technologies in autonomous vehicles.

As part of an important project to reinforce the natural gas transmission network, a new pipeline has been constructed to transport natural gas from a major UK LNG storage facility into the national transmission system. The project involved the installation of several sections by trenchless methods, namely auger boring for a number of road crossings and significant lengths of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) beneath railroads, canals and marshland. The installation of pipelines using trenchless techniques such as HDD continues to increase in popularity. The various methods available offer advantages over traditional open cut techniques, in particular much reduced disruption during the construction of road and rail crossings. Furthermore, increased awareness and responsibility towards the environment leads us to seek installation methods that cause the least disruption at the surface and have the least impact to the environment. It was required to assess the proposed crossing designs against acceptable stress limits set out in company specifications and against the requirements of UK design code IGE/TD/1 Edition 4 [1], which requires that ‘additional loads’ such as soil loadings, thermal loads, settlement and traffic loading are accounted for within the stress calculations. However, it does not stipulate the sources of such equations and the pipeline engineer must rely on other methods and published sources of information. This paper presents the method used to analyse those sections of the new pipeline installed by auger boring and HDD focusing on the methods and formulae used to calculate the stresses in the pipeline from all loading sources.

The Murmansk and Arkhangelsk regions of north-west Russia produce large amounts of spent nuclear fuel. These arise from the Kola Nuclear Power Plant, nuclear propulsion units in icebreaker and container ships of the Murmansk Shipping Company, but mostly from the submarines of the Russian Navy’s Northern Fleet. Many marine vessels have been withdrawn from service, but retain their final fuel charges. There are more than 300 reactors and 57500 spent fuel assemblies. Some fuel has been sent to the RT-1 reprocessing plant at the Mayak. However, most marine fuel remains stored in old temporary and effectively full surface or floating facilities around the Kola Peninsula. Damaged, experimental and liquid metal reactor fuel cannot be reprocessed. This creates special problems for handling, transportation and final disposal. It is against this background that the study reported was undertaken. It was part of the European Commission’s TACIS programme and was aimed at improving the safety of radioactive waste management in north-west Russia. Its prime objectives were to identify the factors restricting spent fuel transport from the region to Mayak and potentially suitable storage and reprocessing facilities. Options were to be developed and costed for restoring effective transportation. Their implementation was to lead to safe interim storage of a limited amount of spent fuel in the north-west of Russia. The north-west region is a large, remote area with a harsh terrain and climate. Fuel is stored in two main areas: the Kola Peninsula and the Arkhangelsk region, which are approximately 1,000 km apart. There is a limited transport infrastructure, but the marine facilities have sea access. Hence fuel movement is predominantly by sea to railheads and then rail to Mayak. Road transport is limited, but important for local linking. Routine transportation of spent fuel to Mayak has been restricted by several factors. These include technical, financial and organisational issues. However, the main ones are a lack of available transportation means in both capability and capacity, problems created by the poor state of some fuel, the inadequate safety of the current storage facilities and inadequate interim and buffer storage capacity. Three main types of shipment option were identified: A) regular shipments with storage at existing sites; B) shipments immediately upon arising; and C) regular shipments to Mayak with optimised construction of additional storage capacity in line with demand. Each option was judged on whether it could provide real improvements in radiological and nuclear safety and/or aid the rapid and cost effective defuelling of inadequate existing storage facilities. An optimisation study was performed considering different defuelling, shipping and rail movement rates, and interim and buffer storage capacities, utilisation and locations. The conclusion was that two options could provide similar good solutions. These were: i) Option A.2/C.2 — regular shipment with interim storage of spent fuel at three key node locations: Kola, Murmansk and Severodvinsk; ii) Option B — immediate shipment upon arising. The final choice depends on the capacity of the Mayak plant to receive and reprocess the fuel and the public acceptability of constructing large new, spent fuel stores in north-west Russia. Given the major uncertainties over Mayak’s capacity to store and reprocess submarine fuel, options A.2/C.2 may be optimum.
