When observers are presented directionally ambiguous motion, they exhibit a bias for experiencing movement in the direction in which shapes appear to face. We examined the influence of rigidity of a shape on the forward-facing bias with stimuli whose directionality is biologically specified. In general, the lack of shape correspondence during a nonrigid transformation should weaken the motion percept and decrease forward-facing bias. In contrast, representational momentum cues associated with a biologically likely nonrigid transformation should enhance the motion percept and increase forward-facing bias. Analysis for both rigid and nonrigid conditions indicated statistically significant forward-facing biases, but strength of bias did not differ significantly. The lack of difference between the two conditions suggests that the transformation was not one which allowed the influence of either consistency of correspondence or representational momentum to dominate and confirms that a comparably sized forward-facing bias can occur with both rigidly and nonrigidly transformed shapes.

<abstract><p>Human interaction patterns on the Web over online social networks vary with the context of communication items (<italic>e.g.,</italic> politics, economics, disasters, celebrities, and etc.), which leads to form unlimited time-evolving curves of information adoption as diffusion proceeds. Online communications often continue to navigate through heterogeneous social systems consisting of a wide range of online media such as social networking sites, blogs, and mainstream news. This makes it very challenging to uncover the underlying causal mechanisms of such macroscopic diffusion. In this respect, we review both top-down and bottom-up approaches to understand the underlying dynamics of an individual item's popularity growth across multiple meta-populations in a complementary way. For a case study, we use a dataset consisting of time-series adopters for over 60 news topics through different online communication channels on the Web. In order to find disparate patterns of macroscopic information propagation, we first generate and cluster the diffusion curves for each target meta-population and then estimate them with two different and complementary approaches in terms of the strength and directionality of influences across the meta-populations. In terms of the strength of influence, we find that synchronous global diffusion is not possible without very strong intra-influence on each population. In terms of the directionality of influence between populations, such concurrent propagation is likely brought by transitive relations among heterogeneous populations. When it comes to social context, controversial news topics in politics and human culture (<italic>e.g.,</italic> political protests, multiculturalism failure) tend to trigger more synchronous than asynchronous diffusion patterns across different social media on the Web. We expect that this study can help to understand dynamics of macroscopic diffusion across complex systems in diverse application domains.</p></abstract>

11 aryl–lone pair and three aryl–anion π –hole interactions are investigated, along with the argon–benzene dimer and water dimer as reference compounds, utilizing the local vibrational mode theory, originally introduced by Konkoli and Cremer, to quantify the strength of the π –hole interaction in terms of a new local vibrational mode stretching force constant between the two engaged monomers, which can be conveniently used to compare different π –hole systems. Several factors have emerged which influence strength of the π –hole interactions, including aryl substituent effects, the chemical nature of atoms composing the aryl rings/ π –hole acceptors, and secondary bonding interactions between donors/acceptors. Substituent effects indirectly affect the π –hole interaction strength, where electronegative aryl-substituents moderately increase π –hole interaction strength. N-aryl members significantly increase π –hole interaction strength, and anion acceptors bind more strongly with the π –hole compared to charge neutral acceptors (lone–pair donors). Secondary bonding interactions between the acceptor and the atoms in the aryl ring can increase π –hole interaction strength, while hydrogen bonding between the π –hole acceptor/donor can significantly increase or decrease strength of the π –hole interaction depending on the directionality of hydrogen bond donation. Work is in progress expanding this research on aryl π –hole interactions to a large number of systems, including halides, CO, and OCH3− as acceptors, in order to derive a general design protocol for new members of this interesting class of compounds.

The directionality of network information flow dictates how networks process information. A central component of information processing in both biological and artificial neural networks is their ability to perform synergistic integration–a type of computation. We established previously that synergistic integration varies directly with the strength of feedforward information flow. However, the relationships between both recurrent and feedback information flow and synergistic integration remain unknown. To address this, we analyzed the spiking activity of hundreds of neurons in organotypic cultures of mouse cortex. We asked how empirically observed synergistic integration–determined from partial information decomposition–varied with local functional network structure that was categorized into motifs with varying recurrent and feedback information flow. We found that synergistic integration was elevated in motifs with greater recurrent information flow beyond that expected from the local feedforward information flow. Feedback information flow was interrelated with feedforward information flow and was associated with decreased synergistic integration. Our results indicate that synergistic integration is distinctly influenced by the directionality of local information flow.

AbstractMicroiontophoresis of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) was used to reversibly inactivate small sites of defined orientation/direction specificity in layers II-IV of cat area 17 while single cells were recorded in the same area at a horizontal distance of ~350–700 jam. We compared the effect of inactivating iso-orientation sites (where orientation preference was within 22.5 deg) and cross-orientation sites (where it differed by 45–90 deg) on orientation tuning and directionality. The influence of iso-orientation inactivation was tested in 33 cells, seven of which were subjected to alternate inactivation of two iso-orientation sites with opposite direction preference. Of the resulting 40 inactivations, only two (5%) caused significant changes in orientation tuning, whereas 26 (65%) elicited effects on directionality: namely, an increase or a decrease in response to a cell's preferred direction when its direction preference was the same as that at an inactivation site, and an increase in response to a cell's nonpreferred direction when its direction preference was opposite that at an inactivation site. It is argued that the decreases in response to the preferred direction reflected a reduction in the strength of intracortical iso-orientation excitatory connections, while the increases in response were due to the loss of iso-orientation inhibition. Of 35 cells subjected to cross-orientation inactivation, only six (17%) showed an effect on directionality, whereas 21 (60%) showed significant broadening of orientation tuning, with an increase in mean tuning width at half-height of 126%. The effects on orientation tuning were due to increases in response to nonoptimal orientations. Changes in directionality also resulted from increased responses (to preferred or nonpreferred directions) and were always accompanied by broadening of tuning. Thus, the effects of cross-orientation inactivation were presumably due to the loss of a cross-orientation inhibitory input that contributes mainly to orientation tuning by suppressing responses to nonoptimal orientations. Differential effects of iso-orientation and cross-orientation inactivation could be elicited in the same cell or in different cells from the same inactivation site. The results suggest the involvement of three different intracortical processes in the generation of orientation tuning and direction selectivity in area 17: (1) suppression of responses to nonoptimal orientations and directions as a result of cross-orientation inhibition and iso-orientation inhibition between cells with opposite direction preferences; (2) amplification of responses to optimal stimuli via iso-orientation excitatory connections; and (3) regulation of cortical amplification via iso-orientation inhibition.

Abstract In this paper, we develop a new physical model which involves a Taylor vortex around a rotating cylinder. The scattering of sound waves from this new model is investigated by solving the linearized Euler equations under the polar coordinate system in the time domain. We use the enhanced optimized scheme for numerical simulations. Numerical results show that scattering causes a change in the spatial distribution of sound energy as the sound wave passes through a rotating cylinder. The directionality of the scattered field varies significantly with the length ratio of the acoustic wavelength to the radius of the rotating cylinder and the vortex intensity. The influences of the ratio and the strength on the directivities and intensities of scattered fields are analyzed. It is shown that the intensity of the scattering cross-section increases with the strength of the vortex. The pressure of the scattered sound fields has a phase shift induced by the couple scattering from the cylinder and the vortex.

Geologic interpretations of aeromagnetic maps are highly subjective but are rarely accompanied by a quantitative confidence assessment, which is a key limitation on the usefulness of the results. Here, we outline a method with which the relative level of data richness can be assessed quantitatively, leading to an improved understanding of spatial variations in interpretational confidence. Simple rules were used to quantify the likely influence of several major sources of uncertainty. These were: (1) the level of geologic constraint, using the local abundance of outcropping rock and the quality of geologic mapping; (2) the interpretability of the aeromagnetic data, considering the strength of edge-like features and the degree of directionality of these features, a proxy for structural complexity; (3) data collection and processing errors, including gridding errors, derived from the statistical error returned during kriging, and the influence of anisotropic line data collection on the detection of gradients. From these individual sources of uncertainty, an overall data richness map was generated through a weighted summation of these grids. Weightings were assigned so as to best match the result to the interpreter’s perception of interpretational confidence. This method produced a map of data richness, which reflects the opportunity that the data provided to the interpreter to make a correct interpretation. An example from central Australia indicated that the data influences were preserved over a moderate range of weighting factors, and that strong bias was required to override these. In addition to providing a confidence assessment, this method also provides a way to test the potential benefits of additional data collection.

Although many bone substitutes have been designed and produced, the development of bone tissue engineering products that mimic the microstructural characteristics of native bone remains challenging. It has been shown that pore orientation within collagen scaffolds influences bone matrix formation by the endochondral route. In addition, that the unidirectional orientation of the scaffolds can limit the growth of blood vessels. However, a comparison between the amount of bone that can be formed in scaffolds with different pore orientations in addition to analyzing the effect of loading osteogenic and proangiogenic factors is still required. In this work we fabricated uni- and multidirectional collagen sponges and evaluated their microstructural, physicochemical, mechanical and biological characteristics. Although the porosity and average pore size of the uni- and multidirectional scaffolds was similar (94.5% vs. 97.1% and 260 µm vs. 269 µm, respectively) the unidirectional sponges had a higher tensile strength, Young’s modulus and capacity to uptake liquids than the multidirectional ones (0.271 MPa vs. 0.478 MPa, 9.623 MPa vs. 3.426 MPa and 8000% mass gain vs. 4000%, respectively). Culturing of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells demonstrated that these scaffolds support cell growth and osteoblastic differentiation in the presence of BMP-2 in vitro, although the pore orientation somehow affected cell attachment and differentiation. The evaluation of the ability of the scaffolds to support bone growth when loaded with BMP-2 or BMP-2 + VEGF in an ectopic rat model showed that they both supported bone formation. Histological analysis and quantification of mineralized matrix revealed that the pore orientation of the collagen scaffolds influenced the osteogenic process.

In this thesis the influence of the drying pressure on interfibre bond strength was investigated. Five different drying pressures, 0.7, 2.9, 4.5, 6.7, and 15 kPa, were applied during the preparation of fiber-fiber cross test pieces. The nominal overlap area of each fibre-fibre cross was measured in a transmission light microscope. A tensile tester was used to record the loaddeformation behavior of each fiber-fiber cross. The final results of the interfibre bond strength were defined by both the overlap area and the maximum force of each bond. The results showed that the influence of drying pressure to the average strength were very weak, although a maximum could be seen at 2.9 kPa of drying pressure. Moreover, the results suggested the overall trend of decreasing strengths at very high drying pressures. Finally, a statistical significance study of the results was presented. In addition, the influences of fiber type (spring wood vs. summer wood) and press type (steel vs. steel or steel vs. rubber) on interfibre bond strength were also discussed.

The punching shear behaviour of interior slab-column connections in flat plates is investigated. The response of six two-way slab specimens, which were designed such that they would fail in punching shear, are presented. The parameter introduced in the experimental program is member depth. The effects of this parameter on the punching shear capacity of slab elements are investigated. The results show a strong "size effect", with deeper members having a smaller shear stresses at failure than shallow ones.
Test results obtained from this experimental program are compared with the punching shear predictions of the Canadian CSA A23.3-94 Standard, the American ACI 318-95 Code, the British BS 8110-85 Standard and the European CEB-FIP 1990 Model Code. Predictions were also made using computer program "Response 2000", assuming an equivalent beam analogy to represent the slab. It is concluded that the shear design of slabs, according to the current Canadian and American codes, can be unconservative under certain conditions, particularity for thick slabs. It is recommended that the punching shear expressions of the CSA Standard and the ACI Code be modified to take into account the "size effect" on the punching shear strength of slabs.

The influence of the member orientation on the strength of joints formed with square hollow sections is examined. The bird beak joint system is a relatively new truss arrangement for square hollow sections, where the chord and the brace have each been rotated by 45° about their own centreline axes. Based on previous experimental testing it has been suggested that this joint system leads to a stronger joint arrangement. Finite element analysis has been used to study the strength and behaviour of such bird beak joints and to compare them to similar joints in CHS and the traditional RHS configuration to test this claim. A comprehensive study has been undertaken for bird beak X -joints and T -joints and comparisons are made with similar traditional joints in RHS and CHS as the parameters of the width ratio ß, the chord slenderness ratio 2y and the chord length ratio a are varied. Displaced shape and contoured stress plots are included to aid understanding of the failure mechanisms. The finite element work on K -joints allows comparisons of the strength and stiffness of bird beak K -joints with those formed in the traditional RHS configuration as the boundary conditions (at the ends of the members), the brace angle and loading conditions are varied. A limited amount of experimental work has been carried out in the laboratories at Nottingham University, with some assistance from the author, involving the physical testing of bird beak joints so that the finite element models can be validated. This work is reported and examined critically. The conclusions focus on the claims that the bird beak joints are stronger and how they differ from the traditional form of joints. Equations are presented to extend the design information available for a practical parameter range.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Surface seals are widely used in South Africa. There are a number of reasons which include affordability, versatility and durability. There are, however, in some cases problems with stone loss that can lead to a shortened lifespan of the pavement. The loss of aggregate chippings in surface seals poses a major problem in the seal pavement industry. This study aims to identify the influencing factors that lead to these adhesive failures as well as to find optimum combinations of binders and aggregates at various conditions. Various binders commonly used in South African surface seal construction will be tested using the Bitumen Bond Strength (BBS) test method. The binders used in the study include 80/100 penetration grade bitumen, elastomer modified bitumen, bitumen rubber, elastomer modified emulsion and cationic rapid setting emulsion. Aggregates used in the study include dolerite, granite and quartzite. The test samples were cured and tested at two temperatures, 15 °C and 35 °C. The samples were also cured for 2, 6 and 24 hours respectively. The study tackles a wide range of variables in order to obtain a good understanding of adhesion properties of surface seals used in South Africa. Tests were repeated at least once to ensure repeatability and in some cases up to four repeats were performed. The loading rate at which the tests were performed had a significant influence on the BBS results. This rate varied which complicated the process of comparing the results. It was therefore decided to unify the loading rates. The BBS results exposed the difference between hot applied binders and emulsions. The former having significant stronger adhesion properties. It was also confirmed by the results that temperature plays a key role in the BBS results due to the visco-elastic properties of bitumen. These influences will be discussed along with others such as aggregate types and curing times. The type of failure is also discussed. Failure can either be adhesive or cohesive, the former being a failure between the aggregate and the binder while the later refers to a failure in the binder itself. The results of other students will also be discussed and compared to the results of this study. These include results of predecessors that tested emulsions as well as results from tests done on fractured aggregate surfaces and precoated aggregates. This study showed very similar results as these from other students, except for tests done with emulsions. It was discovered that the method of curing of the emulsions must be adapted to ensure proper curing of the emulsions. It was found that aggregates did not influence the BBS properties to the same extent as temperature and binder application type. The BBS results of hot applied binders also did not significantly increase as the curing time increased, but the results of emulsions showed some increase. However, the emulsions needed more time to cure properly.

Daar is egter in sommige gevalle probleme met klipverlies wat kan lei tot n verkorte leeftyd. Hierdie klipverlies ontstaan as gevolg van verskeie redes of kombinasies daarvan. Die studie beoog om hierdie faktore wat die adhesie eienskappe beïnvloed te identifiseer sowel as om optimum kobinasies van bindmiddels en klipsoorte te bewerkstellig by verkeie kondisies. ‘n Verskeidenheid van bindmiddels wat algemeen in Suid-Afrika gebruik word, word in die studie getoets met die Bitumen Bond Sterkte (BBS) toets metode. Die bindmiddels wat in die studie gebruik word sluit 80/100 penetrasie graad bitumen, elastomeer gemodifiseerde bitumen, bitumen rubber, elastomeer gemodifiseerde emulsie en kationiese snel settende emulsie. Die klipsoorte wat vir die studie gebruikword is doleriet, graniet en kwartsiet. Hierdie gesteentes word algemeen in die praktyk gebruik. Die tipe versaking word ook bespreek. Versaking kan plaasvind as gevolg van adhesie of cohesie, waar adhesie versaking 'n versaking is tussen die klip en die bindmiddel terwyl cohesie versaking verwys na 'n versaking in die bindmiddel self. Die uitslae van die ander studente sal ook bespreek word en vergelyking word met die resultate van hierdie studie. Dit sluit die resultate van voorgangers in wat emulsies getoets het sowel as die resultate van toetse wat gedoen is op gebreekte klipoppervlaktes en bitumen behandelde klippe. Hierdie studie het baie soortgelyke resultate getoon as dié van ander studente, behalwe vir die toetse wat gedoen was met emulsies. Daar is vasgestel dat die metode van kuring van die emulsies moet aangepas word om behoorlike kuring van die emulsies te verseker. Daar is ook gevind dat klipsoorte nie die BBS eienskappe in dieselfde mate as temperatuur en bindmiddel toepassingstipe beïnvloed het nie. The characteristics of hindcast data for extreme storms at a Northern North Sea location are shown to depend on storm direction, reflecting storm strength and fetch variability. Storm peak HS over threshold is modelled using a generalised Pareto distribution, the parameters of which are allowed to vary smoothly with direction using a Fourier form. A directionally-varying extreme value threshold is incorporated. The degree of smoothness of extreme value shape and scale with direction is regulated by roughness-penalised maximum likelihood; the optimal value of roughness selected by cross-validation. The characteristics of 100-year storm peak HS, estimated using the directional model differ from those estimated when ignoring the directionality of storms. In particular, the extreme right hand tail of omnidirectional HS100 is longer using the directional model, indicating in this case that ignoring directionality causes underestimation of design criteria. Although storm peak data alone are used for extreme value modelling, the influence of a storm, in directional design sectors other than that containing its storm peak direction, is incorporated by estimating the storm’s directional dissipation directly from the data. An automated approach to selection of directional design sectors is described. Directional design criteria are developed using three different approaches, all consistent with an omni-directional storm peak HS non-exceedence probability of 0.5. We suggest a risk-cost criterion, which minimises design cost for a given omni-directional design specification, as an objective basis for optimal selection of directional criteria.

Drives to improve gas turbines efficiency have lead to an increase in firing temperatures. This increase in exhaust temperature has a negative impact upon turbine blade life. Both engineers and material scientists have produced methods to improve turbine blade life under these conditions. Cooling holes have become commonplace and use relatively cool gas to create a lower temperature barrier around a turbine blade. These cooling holes creating internal and external surfaces; a common sight of crack initiation. Directionally-solidified (DS) turbine blades have also become commonplace. These turbine blades exhibit a transversely-isotropic grain structure that improves creep strength in a desired direction. To model a component under such conditions, anisotropic constitutive models are required. In this paper, an anisotropic tertiary creep damage constitutive model for transversely-isotropic materials is given. The influence of creep-damage on general linear elasticity (elastic damage) is described by a modified Hooke’s compliance tensor. Finite element simulations of a V-notched tensile specimen are conducted to replicate a crack initiation site. A discussion on stress triaxiality, stress redistribution, and damage distribution due to anisotropy is provided.

In modern gas turbines, SC (Single Crystal) and DS (Directionally Solidified) nickel alloys are applied which, compared to CC (Conventionally Casting) alloys, hold a higher cyclic life and a significantly improved creep rupture strength. Because SC and DS alloys feature a significant directionally dependence of material properties, the vibration analysis of the SC and DS blade has to be carried out, taking account of the anisotropy of material properties. In the vibration analysis by FEA (Finite Element Analysis), the DS blade has to be modeled approximately as transverse orthotropic material, while the SC blade can be modeled exactly as orthotropic material in lattice directions. In order to design the SC and DS blade with high reliability, it is necessary to establish the analysis model and to clarify the influence of the anisotropy of the material properties on the vibration characteristics of the blade. In this paper, first, the effect of the anisotropy of elastic constants on the vibration characteristics of the SC and DS blade is investigated. Second, the validity of the assumption of the transverse isotropy for the DS blade, which is applied in the current blade design, is examined by Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, the frequency deviation of the SC and DS blade is analyzed by the sensitivity analysis method, and is compared to that of the CC blade.

<p>Many bridges have been in service for over 40 years and face to the repapering or reinforcing period due to deterioration. Particularly, in a high-strength bolts used for joints may be loosened due to co-rotation, corrosion, or vibration caused by the vehicles. Thus, it is important to evaluate an axial force of the high-strength bolts. In this research, an axial force evaluation of high-strength bolt using eddy current that does not require measurement preparation has been investigated. The eddy current method is capable of capturing the change in permeability of steel members due to the stress change. Further, the stress distribution of the bolt head is assumed uniform without directionality. Therefore, a numerical simulation and an experiment that measures the output signal of the eddy current probe while introducing axial force to the high-strength bolt has conducted.</p>
