In higher education, issues of in loco parentis have been most often discussed in connection with campus administrative policies. College writing teachers need to reflect, however, on the ways they conceivably exercise parental authority in their own classrooms, through such models as the Stern Father and the Nurturing Mother.

The new Modernising Medical Careers agenda in the UK raises concerns about maintaining the standard of psychotherapy training (Mizen, 2007). In 1993 the Royal College of Psychiatrists made psychotherapy a mandatory rather than recommended work experience and there is now a competency portfolio outlining requirements for trainees. However, startling data have been revealed recently, showing that 91% of senior house officers did not meet the requirements of the Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) exam regarding psychotherapy training and 23% were not even aware of them (Agarwal et al, 2007). the quality and variability of psychotherapy experience in training have been surveyed in several papers (Podlesjka & Stern 2003; Carley & Mitchison 2006; Pretorius & Goldbeck 2006), and some solutions to practical problems with its provision have been proposed, for example, consultation from a consultant psychotherapist, utilising feedback from trainees, and focusing on practicalities and logistics at a local level (Wildgoose et al, 2002; Mitchison 2007). However, little has been said about trainees' own experiences of undertaking supervised practice in psychodynamic psychotherapy. This paper discusses trainees' outlook on psychotherapy training schemes.

Abstract: This article traces the crossings of religion and gender, American Orthodox and secular Judaism, teachers and students, religious educational institutions and the lives that inhabit them. Highlighting Jewishness and transness as intersecting forms of crossing, it explores periods of personal and institutional transition in the lives of Professor Joy Ladin, Yeshiva University's first openly transgender employee, and three of her former students. Experimenting methodologically with form and source, this piece combines interview with textual and theoretical analysis to link the Jewish gendered lives of its interlocutors—who emerge from different locations across the Orthodox-secular Jewish spectrum—with one another, and with larger communal and institutional forms of American Judaism they index. In doing so, this essay connects gender, religion, and education as intersecting forms of lineage, which pass through the interlocutors' and institution's historical and contemporary worlds. Activating crossing as a form of Jewish learning and queer scavenging, the piece enacts a method of Jewish institutional and embodied knowledge production that moves across lived and textual religion, articulating an alternate path through current struggles for queer/trans religious lives. This path does not opt to lose or loosen these lives from American Orthodox life and its textual discourse, but rather, it links them to both, and to one another.

This research grows from an in-practice need to further understand how poetry functions to disrupt and trouble normative language use. The innovative or experimental poet, as I contend, handles language not as ready-made and static but as material and multidimensional. The results of this handling of language can lead a reader to become confused, confronted and potentially transformed, thus challenging notions of reading and understanding. In this PhD by creative component I address critically and creatively the question of how poetry troubles, disrupts and transforms our experience of language. I inquire into the kinds of methods and processes which give rise to linguistic sites which excite, frustrate and challenge a reader, while also considering what this might mean for both a reader and the process of reading itself. I contend that the role of poet is to ‘trouble’ language and bring to the fore the plastic aspects, such as sound and visual effects, which in turn challenge a reader's relationship to notions such as sense, clarity and meaning. I demonstrate my argument through two components, a poetry collection entitled in chant & in counting, which is weighed at 55%, and an exegesis at 45%. In the poetry collection I experiment with methods such as violence, play and silence and aim to create poems which make problematic normative grammar and syntax as well as generating poems which push a reader off centre. The exegesis seeks to elucidate the poet as troublemaker, by building an ‘anatomy of troublemaking’ which examines what kinds of outcomes are produced by such troublemaking devices. By interweaving my own poems and in-practice observations into the exegesis I demonstrate in clear terms the importance of a line of questioning that resides within one’s own writing practice. Together, the creative and theoretical components form a dialogue between troubled and untroubled language which demonstrates in concrete terms the importance of both. My original contribution to knowledge is the development of an ‘anatomy of troublemaking’ which furthers understanding of what happens to language upon entry into the poem.

AbstractThis chapter outlines an International Symposium held at Frankfurt on 1–5 September 2019. It marked the centennial of quantitative experiments with molecular beams, pioneered by Otto Stern. The European Physical Society declared Stern’s original laboratory a Historic Site, the fifth in Germany. As a graduate student in 1955, I learned about Otto Stern (1888–1969) and the impact of his molecular beams on quantum physics. I was intrigued and undertook crossed-beam experiments at Berkeley. In 1960 Otto came to a seminar that I gave. Later I met him, and heard some of his stories. The rest of the chapter describes his Nobel Prize and other Fests. In 1958 his long-term colleague, Immanuel Estermann, organized a celebration and Festschrift for Otto’s 70th birthday. In 1988, as a guest editor, I organized a Festschift for the centennial of Otto’s birth. That year, the German Physical Society established the Stern-Gerlach Prize as its highest award for experimental physics. Bretislav Friedrich and I wrote three papers about Stern. Since 2000, Horst Schmidt-Böcking at Frankfurt and colleagues have produced historical articles, along with a book about Otto, edited and bound all of his research papers into books, and diligently pursued letters to and from Otto, collecting them into large volumes.

This chapter unfolds the education, family, and early life of Lee de Forest. It emphasizes that de Forest spent the first six years of his life in Congregationalist parsonages in the stern presence of his father and what he remembered as the “sainted presence” of his mother. The chapter also discusses the most important element of de Forest's informal education: his own reading. Lee de Forest, relying on his imagination, powers of close observation, and ingenuity, was beginning to build and invent. With wood gathered from the cellar of his house, he created scale replicas of a locomotive engine, a blast. As he grew older, de Forest increasingly turned from mechanical imitation to invention. The chapter recounts de Forest's final spring in Talladega College, as he prepared to leave for Yale College. It also narrates the arguments he had with his father, Henry Swift De Forest, about education.

This chapter examines Roth’s struggles with his father, his decision to go to college at Bucknell University after a year at Rutgers Newark, and his early girlfriends; the influence of his early professors at Bucknell and his editing the campus literary magazine where some of his earliest writing appeared. Graduate study at the University of Chicago and early publications followed, as well as his meeting influential novelists like Saul Bellow and Richard Stern. New friendships also emerged, notably with Theodore Solotaroff, critic and later editor of the New American Review, and Arthur Geffen and Barry Targan. “Bibliography by day, women by night” was their motto.

Abstract Yehoyada Amir was born in Israel in 1954. He received both his undergraduate and graduate education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His doctoral dissertation, written under the supervision of Professor Eliezer Schweid and completed in 1993, dealt with the relationship of a number of Israeli philosophers to the thought of Franz Rosenzweig. Since finishing his graduate studies, he has taught at Hebrew University, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, and Humboldt University in Berlin. At present, he is professor of modern Jewish thought and director of the Israel Rabbinic Program at the Hebrew Union College, Jerusalem Center. He has published two significant books: Engendering Judaism: An Inclusive Theology and Ethics (1998), and more recently, a Hebrew study entitled Da’at Ma’amina (Reason out ef Faith; 2004), which is a detailed analysis of Franz Rosenzweig’s Der Stern der Erlosung (The Star of Redemption). In addition, he has published significant essays on other nineteenth- and twentieth-century thinkers such as Nachman Krochmal, A. D. Gordon, and Hermann Cohen.

Abstract Gabriel Harvey (c.1550---1630/i) was educated at Christ’ s College Cambridge (BA, 1570), and at Pembroke Hall (MA, 1573), where he became a Fellow and made the acquaintance of Spenser. Harvey moved to Trinity Hall in 1578, and was junior proctor in 1583. He became known for his lectures on rhetoric, publishing in 1577 two Latin orations, Rhetor and Ciceronianus (the latter ed. and tr. H. S. Wilson and C. A. Forbes (Lincoln, Nebr., 1945)). In 1586 he received an Oxford degree as Doctor of Civil and Canon Laws, leaving Cambridge a few years later to practise in the Court of Arches, London (the highest of the ecclesiastical courts). Having failed to make a career in London, in 1593 he returned home to Saffron Walden, where he lapsed into a long obscurity. In 1592-3 (and perhaps subsequently) he was involved in a long polemic with Robert Greene (1560?--92) and then with Thomas Nashe (1567-1601). See also G. C. Scholars have identified community colleges as ideal institutions to facilitate global justice through their involvement in internationalization activities such as study abroad. This chapter explores the meaning of humanism as it relates to study abroad at the community college. Using Andreotti, Stein, Pashby, and Nicolson's Paradigms of Discourse, the chapter describes the ways in which humanism can be defined in a variety of ways based on one's own goals. The chapter also grounds a rationale for study abroad at the community college within critical humanism by applying Young's Social Connections Model. Finally, the chapter applies the critical humanist rationale to begin to question the relationship between community college study abroad initiatives: Who is included in the community mission? Whose cultures come to be understood from involvement in study abroad? How are U. S. cultures represented by study abroad?

Charles Eliot, president of Harvard, developed the “course unit” to integrate schoolwork from kindergarten to college and give the educational system’s middle-class graduates a sense of collective identity based on the shared experience of time. Yet Henry Adams and Gertrude Stein—both of whom witnessed Eliot’s work at Harvard firsthand—blamed the educational system for the feelings of chronological loneliness they suffered under industrial modernity. In response to this systematic failure, Adams and Stein theorized new institutional modes in their writing—the “period” and the “continuous present”—to standardize their readers’ experience of time. By making students read about the lonely, out-of-sync college graduates in Adams’s and Stein’s work, instructors have in turn produced a more standard temporal experience across the school system.

The following documents collect information regarding the calibration and intercalibration of various sensors that were deployed during the North Atlantic field component of the NASA EXPORTS project (EXPORTS NA), which took place between May 4 and June 1, 2021 (Johnson et al., 2023). The EXPORTS NA campaign was designed to to provide a contrasting end member to the earlier North Pacific field campaign, and focused on carbon export associated with the North Atlantic spring bloom in which gravitational sinking of organic particles, the physical advection and mixing, and active transport by vertically migrating zooplankton are all expected to provide significant flux pathways. During EXPORTS NA data sets were collected from a variety of shipbased, autonomously-piloted, and Lagrangian platforms. Intercalibration activities were tasked to different groups within the EXPORTS project team. Team leads and contact information are listed below. The overarching goal of these activities was to identify a trusted sensor, carry out a careful calibration of this sensor, then base any intercalibraiton needs off of this sensor, occasionally propagating information across platforms. Full details of the intercalibration approach, assumptions, and summary are provided in the attached documents. All calibration and intercalibration activities were completed before data set were uplaoded to the NASA SeaBASS data repository. Data related to this cruise can be publicly accessed at: https://seabass.gsfc.nasa.gov/cruise/EXPORTSNA Updates to calibration and intercalibration documents required to reflect revised data sets will also be provided through SeaBASS.
