This paper explores the production of urban spaces as deathscapes, or spaces that are defined by death. We probe the ways in which these spaces are produced by the material content of the spaces themselves, and the discursive representations of those spaces found in popular media. We take as our empirical starting point personal encounters with dead animal bodies in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Combining qualitative and quantitative methodologies, we juxtapose personal experiences with death in the city with popular representations of Baltimore, as well as a spatial analysis of the geographies of non-human death. Using mixed methodologies, we tease out and highlight the ways in which death, dying, bodies, and violence are used to produce urban deathscapes. Our analysis shows how the production of death and deathscapes are inherently uneven spatial processes, which work in tandem to (re)produce certain spaces as deadly. Furthermore, we illustrate how these spaces are produced in part by discourse, politics, representation, and the material presence of non-human death, challenging what we might think of as being capable of producing space, and broadening the concept of deathscapes. Ultimately we conclude that producing urban spaces as deadly is a means by which capital seeks to reproduce itself, and, through harnessing the power of the non-human dead to produce space, utilize nature to produce new forms of urban capital.

Abstract Site-specific opera are those works which are either composed for, or produced in (or both) a prescribed space other than that of the opera house. The particular site chosen for the production of such a work has a profound effect on how that work of art is received. Questions are raised with regard to the work’s meaning and its relationship to the time and place of the site in which it is performed. In order to better understand the spatial and temporal richness within site-specific opera, recent productions of European and North American operas from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are considered. Based upon composer/librettist intentions, the site of the premiere production and its relation to the music-dramatic work, five types of site-specific opera are proposed.

Traditional land use and occupancy of the wilderness lands of Finnish pre- and early- historic communities has not received much discussion in contemporary geographical debates. This article explores such occupancies and analyses transformations to present land use through two case studies: the Lake Kuivasjärvi basin in Western Finland and the Linnunsuo marsh-mire in Eastern Finland. Environmental justice provides the analytical framing through which the processes of change are analysed within each case by using historical geographical data and reviewing literature. Both locations were communally used by occupying villages prior to the advent of the industrial era. Yet the forestry and peat production industries that were pursued in the twentieth century ignored this historical use and saw them as ‘vacant spaces’ to be developed. In Linnunsuo, a post-production space has developed since the end of the peat production.

This article focuses on processes of meaning making in White spaces as the glue that holds their social structures together. Understanding White spaces and how they operate necessitates theoretical development from a cultural perspective. The authors’ research empirically engages with a wide range of White spaces—neighborhoods, subcultural scenes, craft breweries, online digital platforms, and academia, to name a few—and do so from a theoretical space where the two areas of sociology meet: race and culture. We engage with three key questions to theorize the culture of White space: (a) How do these White spaces work? (b) How are these White spaces challenged? (c) How do these White spaces change and/or reproduce themselves? From these engagements, this article develops a general approach to understanding White spaces through understanding their racialized processes of meaning making.

Identifying urban production–living–ecological spaces and their interactive relationships is conducive to better understanding and optimizing urban space development. This paper took the main urban area of Hangzhou city as an example, and a two-level scoring evaluation model was constructed to accurately identify urban production–living–ecological spaces using point of interest (POI) data. Then, kernel density analysis, a spatial transfer matrix, and a bivariate spatial autocorrelation model were used to reveal the spatial patterns of urban production–living–ecological spaces and their interactive relationships during 2010 and 2019. The results showed that the proposed two-level scoring evaluation model combining both the physical area and density of POIs was effective in accurately identifying urban production–living–ecological spaces using POI data, with an identification accuracy of 88.9%. Urban production space was concentrated on the south bank of the Qiantang River and around the north of Hangzhou. Urban living space had the highest proportion, mainly distributed within the ring highway of Hangzhou in a contiguous distribution pattern, and urban ecological space was concentrated around West Lake and Xiang Lake. During 2010 and 2019, the expansion of urban production–living–ecological spaces had obvious spatial differences. Additionally, the mutual transformation between production and living spaces was more frequent during the study period and was mainly distributed within the ring highway of Hangzhou. There were significant positive spatial correlations between production and living and between living and ecological spaces, while a significant negative spatial correlation occurred between production and ecological spaces. The spatial correlations of urban production–living–ecological spaces revealed obvious spatial heterogeneity. This study proposed a two-level scoring evaluation model to accurately identify the spatial patterns of urban production–living–ecological spaces and their interactive relationships using POI data, which can provide detailed information and scientific references for urban spatial planning and management in rapidly urbanizing cities.

This thesis investigates the production of airport space, and it puts a particular emphasis on its temporal, spatial and embodied characteristics. The first chapter is concerned with the work of architects and their production of representations of airport space. Building on in-depth interviews with architects, the chapter considers their use of drawings and computer models as well as their thinking about the sites where airports are located. The second chapter investigates the work of operational readiness experts, who design and test the spatial practices of the operations of new airport buildings. Making use of interviews with two operational readiness experts and my observations during terminal trials, the chapter is concerned with t he design of the trial process as well as the creation of individual trials. I investigate the scripting of volunteers to get at the understanding of the passenger as a user of airport space. The third chapter discusses the labour of cleaners and baggage handlers in maintaining airport space and enabling passengers’ movement. I interviewed union representatives, a ground handling expert and a health and safety expert to provide multiple perspectives on workers’ labour, as well as the physical consequences of their work. The fourth chapter is concerned with the impact of aircraft noise on neighbourhoods close to, and increasingly also at a distance from, airports. Building on interviews with activists and representatives of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, I investigate how aircraft noise is measured and represented and how its geographies are perceived, navigated, and protested by inhabitants. Throughout, the thesis aims to create an understanding of the relations between the spatial and temporal characteristics of airport space, and their impacts on the multiple subjects of airport space.

Following the Islamic conquest of Jerusalem in the early 7th century, the new rulers of the city almost immediately began a series of architectural, administrative, and urban development projects. I will be focusing specifically on several projects undertaken during the Umayyad dynasty. So far, there have been extensive discussions locating the ways in which the Umayyads made political and religious claims to Jerusalem. I will expand on this scholarship by looking at and integrating a third facet: the social. By examining how, during the Umayyad period, new public spaces were produced and used in Jerusalem, how construction projects attracted and retained skilled workers in the city, and how the government and the community encouraged and demonstrated an amenability towards a dynamic economy, we will broaden our understanding of how cities are built in both medieval and current contexts. More specifically, it will reveal how a social method contributed to an Islamic claim to Jerusalem, but at the same time, establish the city as a destination point for travelers of diverse backgrounds.

This thesis develops a theory of property as a spatially contingent relation of belonging. Drawing on legal geography, critical geography and feminist theory, this spatial understanding of property provides a conceptually useful way of analysing a wide range of socia-legal issues. I argue that property occurs when a relation of belonging is 'held up' by space; that is, when the wider social processes, structures and networks that constitute space give force to that relation. 'Holding up' is a more diffuse, het erogeneous, spatial process than state recognit ion. The relation of belonging that is held up might be between a subject and an object, as property is conventionally understood, or it might be the constitutive relation between a part and a whole, as identity is often understood (for example the relation between a white person and whiteness). Understanding property in this way reveals its broad powers - how property constitutes subjectivities, shapes social and physical spaces, how it can operate subversively. This theory of property is explored in relation to two seemingly unconnected socia-legal issues: that of indigenous resistance to long leases of their land under Austral ia's Northern Territory National Emergency Response Act 2007 (Cth) and that of sexuality-based asylum claims made by women in Australia, Canada and Brita in. Analysing cases f rom t hese two socia-legal contexts, I argue that what was at stake in both contexts was the production of particu lar spaces of belonging; that is, spaces that hold up some relations of belonging and not others. In the final chapter I unpack the conceptual issue of how 'Space is connected to the subject. Exploring the concepts of 'taking space with you' and inheritance, I put forward an understanding of the complex connections that exist across space and time, and the way those connections affect and constitute the subject.

Cryptocurrencies and blockchains are increasingly used, implemented and adapted for numerous purposes; people and businesses are integrating these technologies into their practices and strategies, creating new political economies and spaces in and of everyday life. This thesis seeks to develop a foundation of geographic theory for the study of spatial production within and surrounding blockchain technologies focusing on acute studies of Bitcoin as cryptocurrency, Ethereum as digital marketplace, and their conditions of possibility as decentralized autonomous organizations. Utilizing concepts from Henri Lefebvre's Production of Space, this thesis situates blockchain technologies within the wider discussion about the political economy of modes of spatial production, dialectical material methods, code/space, and network society through an examination of human and machine relations within their unique and emergent spaces. Combining phenomenological and dialectical material methods with the methodological practice of discourse analysis and systems theory, this thesis explores an understanding of how systemic mechanisms and actant actions driving blockchain technologies are indications of new evolutions in our conceptions of space and place in everyday life of later informational capitalism.

In their struggle for equality in Tamil Nadu, Dalits (ex-untouchables) often challenge prevailing caste norms by appropriating practices and conventions of locally dominant groups. This study examines how the Dalit Pallars of Tamil Nadu engage in various forms of socio-cultural and political assertions to challenge their marginality. It looks at the performative aspects of such struggles by focusing on Guru Pujas; public performances undertaken to pay homage to late social and political icons/leaders. As annual events these pujas have enabled Thevars, the local dominant caste, to showcase their community’s strength and power through the appropriation of public space. However, the same mode of public performance, which was integral to the public production and consolidation of the dominant caste as a political community, has been replicated by historically marginalised castes. This is reflected tangibly through visual aesthetics during commemorations. Following the Thevars and Nadars, a section of the Pallars are engaged in proclaiming the historical past by asserting that they too form the royal lineage and are competing with Thevar iconography to challenge the cultural dominance of Thevars. As quotidian forms of oppression and violence mark the spatial relationship between these castes, these performances provide a micro-lens to understand the dynamics of how local power is generated and made visible through a politics inscribed in space. Recent decades have witnessed increased competition over public symbols and the strategic location of caste-specific cultural signifiers – including competition over style and performance – and a heightened contest over the occupation of public space. Thus, the study maps the Pallar assertion and the challenges posed by Thevar retaliation.

This essay does a theoretical comparison of the intricate social production in digital and real spaces, proposing a model for the non-technical exploration of the social production of spaces relating to human digital technology. The ‘social space’ proposed by Henri Lefebvre (1974) - responsible for producing material space - and the holistic model of ‘cybernetic space’ proposed by Ananda Mitra and Rae Lynn Schwartz (2001) - responsible for supporting the production of real and digital spaces - are argued as collaboratively producing cybernetic social spaces, serving as the definition of a unified model for the production of spaces in contemporary society. The digital spaces are argued as being a similar analogue to classical ‘social space’. Two native cybernetic spaces are presented and discussed, argued as being responsible for the transitive production of digital and real spaces as they survey and situate the production of cybernetic social space. Finally, two case studies exemplifying the aesthetics and politics of cybernetic space are presented, analyzed and discussed in accordance with the proposed model of cybernetic social space.

The role, form, and locus of public space in urban environments has changed. Indoor entertainment spaces often replace the urban exterior as places of collectivity and chance encounter; austerity measures and rapid densification alike are factors in the proliferation of Privately Owned Public Open Spaces(POPOS); and in cities across the globe, the public itself has changed as a consequence of multifaceted migration patterns. At the same time, there has been a widespread resurgence of interest in the ‘urban commons’,understood as collectively appropriating and regulating urban resources. This trend has altered the relationship of citizens to architects in the production of urban collective space. The diversity of stakeholders in traditional public space design has led to complex design and planning processes for architects that offer only intermittent citizen participation in the process of constructing a final outcome.Urban commons projects, in contrast, are based on local citizen initiation, direct negotiation between stakeholders, long-term involvement of citizens, and the evolution of public space over time. In commons projects, the involvement of architects takes on the form of intermittent participation, using acupunctural interventions to catalyze the next steps in the commons’ evolution, thus inverting the role of citizens and architects in the production of public space.

The construction industry plays a significant role in the economic growth of a country. Nevertheless, the construction industry has created severe adverse environmental impacts. Therefore, green building technologies are implemented to alleviate the adverse effects of the construction industry. Using green materials instead of conventional building materials with high environmental impacts has been identified as one such implementation. However, there seems to be much confusion in defining green building materials. Hence, it is vital to explore the features of green building materials. Therefore, this article investigates green features that qualify the building materials as green building materials. A qualitative research approach was selected as the research methodology, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven green building experts. The data was analysed using content analysis. Findings revealed that recycled content, local availability of materials, embodied energy of materials, use of rapidly renewable material, usage of waste material for the production process, material wastage content in the production process and pollution prevention in the production process are the green features. The study results guide the identification of green building materials that can replace the materials with poor environmental sustainability.

Marrickville is located in the western heart of inner-city Sydney and is the beneficiary of the centrifugal process that has forced many creatives out of the inner city itself and further out into more affordable suburbs. This locality is built on the lands of the Eora nation. It is one of the most culturally diverse communities in the country but is slowly being gentrified creating tensions between its light industrial heart, its creative industry community and inner city developers. SME’s, co-working spaces and live music venues, are all in jeopardy as they occupy light-industrial warehouses which either have been re-zoned or are under threat of re-zoning. Its location underneath the flight path of major air traffic may indeed be a saving factor in its preservation as the creative industries operate across all major sectors here and the air traffic noise keeps land prices down. Despite these pressures the creative industries in Marrickville have experienced substantial growth since 2011, with the current CI intensity sitting at 9.2%. This is the only region in this study where the cultural production sector holds more than half the employment for specialists and support workers, when compared to creative services.

According to future projections based on current demographic growth trends, Auckland’s population will reach two million in 2033. Since the city is already afflicted by a serious housing crisis, at the beginning of 2017 the newly elected Mayor Phil Goff set up a task force. Formed by representatives of various stakeholders, it was given the task of producing a report with strategic and tactical guidelines to mitigate the situation. Unitec researchers were invited to respond to the report, which came out at the end of 2017, in the form of three think pieces towards the Building Better Homes, Towns and Cities National Science Challenge. This paper is a new iteration of one of these think pieces, focused on collaborative living, and expands on the new role that designers should play in this field. Its ideological position is that the house cannot and should not be considered as a commodity on the free market; nor should focus solely be on bringing down prices by increasing the number of houses on offer. Over time, housing might evolve to being more about social (use) value than exchange value. Other models of the production and consumption of household goods are documented throughout the world as alternatives to mainstream market logic, using collective procurement mechanisms to cut construction and marketing costs with savings of up to 30%. These experiments, not limited to achieving financially sustainable outcomes, are linked to new social practices of collaboration between neighbours. The sharing of spaces and equipment to complement private housing units also leads to social and environmental sustainability.
