Sulphate attack of concrete and cement composites comprises sulphate ions migration into the material porous space and their following reaction with hydration products in the presence of water. Newly formed compounds initiate filling of porous space and volume expansion. Sulphate corrosion phenomenon still belongs to the main mechanism affecting the durability and service life of concrete structures. This paper deals with the investigation of sulphate resistance of two types of High Performance Concrete (HPC) exposed for 168 days to sodium sulphate water solution and reference environment of distilled water. Corrosive action is monitored at chosen time periods non-destructively, i.e. using measurement of length and mass changes, basic physical characteristics and dynamic moduli. Additionally, destructive tests of mechanical parameters are realised. For samples immersed in distilled water, improvement in mechanical strength is observed for the both studied HPCs. In case of HPC C I containing crushed aggregate, the improvement of mechanical resistivity is observed for samples exposed to sulphate solution for 140 days only. For other researched period of sulphate exposure, mechanical strength decreased in comparison with the reference values. On the other hand, HPC C II exhibited mechanical resistivity to sulphate action in all examined time periods of sulphate solution exposure.

We present two different approaches for the numerical solution of fractional optimal control problems (FOCPs) based on a spectral method using Chebyshev polynomials. The fractional derivative is described in the Caputo sense. The first approach follows the paradigm “optimize first, then discretize” and relies on the approximation of the necessary optimality conditions in terms of the associated Hamiltonian. In the second approach, the state equation is discretized first using the Clenshaw and Curtis scheme for the numerical integration of nonsingular functions followed by the Rayleigh-Ritz method to evaluate both the state and control variables. Two illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the suggested approaches.

Wind farm construction is increasing progressively, to cope-up with the current global energy scenario. The advantage of clean energy and sustainability helps wind turbine construction to flourish rapidly. Location of wind turbines is independent of foundation soil condition but depends on the wind speeds and socio-environment issues. Hence, a construction sites may not be favorable in terms of geotechnical demands. The taller wind towers facilitate the generation of high energy production, which will increase loads on the foundation, and eventually increase the dimension of the foundation. Hence, the choice of a suitable foundation system is necessary for geotechnical engineer to design tall wind towers. This study aims to analyze different foundation types e.g., raft/mat foundation, pile group foundation, and piled raft/mat foundation using analytical calculation verified with numerical models using PLAXIS 3D software. The foundation for steel wind turbine towers 100 m high was designed for different types of soils e.g., soft clayey soil, medium-stiff clayey soil, stiff clayey soil, and sandy soil. The design wind speed was taken from the ASCE 7-10 (2010) standard for Occupancy Category III and IV Buildings and Other Structures, as the Illinois region falls in that category. The parametric study was performed by varying the diameter of raft/mat, wind speed, number of piles, and soil types to evaluate the settlement in any type of foundation with load sharing proportion in piled raft/mat foundation. First, the raft/mat foundation design was carried out manually by changing the diameter of 15 m, 20 m, 25 m, 30 m, and 35 m, and changing load by considering different wind speed. Then the foundation was modeled using PLAXIS 3D software with a raft/mat diameter of 25 m, 30 m, and 35 m only, by considering the eccentricity and factor of safety criteria. With the increase in wind speed, the differential settlement on the raft/mat foundation was found to be increased. However, the increase in diameter of raft/mat caused the reduction in differential settlement. Soft clayey soil was found to be more sensitive than other soils used in the present study. For the same diameter of raft/mat, applied the same wind load, the differential settlement of foundation in soft clayey soil was found to be 6-10 times higher than the sandy soil.The position of piles was fixed based on the spacing criteria in the pile group foundation. The number of piles used in this study were 23, 32, and 46. Settlement was found to be varied with the number of piles in all soils used in this study. The lateral deflection for soft clayey soil decreased to half, when number of piles increased from 23 to 46. The differential settlement was found to be increased with the increase in wind speed in pile group foundation. Raft/mat foundation settlement was found to be 4 to 6 times higher than the settlement in pile group foundation in any soils, used in this study, for a given wind speed.The result of piled raft/mat foundation showed that the majority of the total load is shared by the piles (i.e., 60% to 94%) and remaining load is shared by the raft/mat (i.e., 6% to 40%), based on the stiffness of raft/mat and piles as well as pile-soil-pile interaction. The increase in wind speed in the wind turbines increased the differential settlement of piled raft/mat foundation in all soils. Similarly, the lateral deflection also increased with the increase in wind speed in pile raft/mat foundation in all soils. The PLAXIS 3D analysis revealed that the differential settlement in soft clayey soil was 1.5 to 2.0 times higher than the settlement in sandy soil.The validation of numerical modeling was carried out by the raft/mat foundation using Boussinesq’s theory and calculating settlement for single pile and group pile foundation. The current study showed that the soft clayey soil and medium-stiff clayey soil favor deep foundation, like pile group and piled raft/mat rather than shallow foundation, like raft/mat foundation. The results obtained from both analytical calculation and numerical modeling was found to be approximately matching. This study will help local construction company and geotechnical engineer to guide a proper foundation design of tall onshore wind turbine.

This diploma thesis deals with hip endoprothesis, primarily with endoprothesis conservative Mayo. A part of this paper considers a study aimed at an anatomy, types and modern trends in endoprothetic. On the basis of this study, gained CT data and the help of systems Ansys Workbench, Rhino Ceros and Catia there was made a model of proximal part of femur and TEP Conservative Mayo. A computational model was build up afterwards, which was used for a stress-train analysis.

Cette thèse porte sur la construction de solutions particulières de type ondes progressives ou ondes planes pour différentes équations aux dérivées partielles (EDP) et en particulier le modèle de Frenkel-Kontorova et une équation des ondes régularisée. Ce mémoire s’articule comme suit. Le chapitre 1 est destiné à une introduction générale dans laquelle je présente une motivation physique et un résumé de mon travail. Le chapitre 2 est destiné à l’étude d’existence et d’unicité des ondes progressives avec le terme d’accélération. Ce modèle consiste d’un système d’ODE qui décrit le mouvement de particules en interaction. Les applications les plus importantes que nous avons à l’esprit est le mouvement des défauts cristallins appelés dislocations. Pour ce modèle, nous montrons l’existence des ondes progressives sous des hypothèses très faibles. L’unicité de la vitesse a été étudiée ainsi que l’unicité du profil en utilisant les différents types du principe de maximum fort. Comme ce que nous savons, c’est le premier résultat concernant les ondes progressives pour un système accéléré, spatialement discret. Ce chapitre est un article publié à la revue Journal of Dynamic and Differential Equation : Existence and uniqueness of traveling wave for accelerated Frenkel-Kontorova model, Journal of Dynamic and Differential Equation : Volume 26, Issue 24 (2014), page 1133-1169. Le chapitre 3 est réservé à l’homogénéisation numérique du modèle Frenkel-Kontrova dans le cas amortie. Je présente deux méthodes pour calculer l’hamiltonien effectif: la méthode grand temps et la méthode de Newton. Quelques simulations de l’hamiltonien effectif sont fournies. Le chapitre 4 est destiné à l’étude d’équation d’onde dans un domaine périodique. Selon certaines hypothèses, je construis une solution d’onde plane pour le problème approché et je montre que cette solution satisfait certaines propriétés. Je définis un opérateur non local et un terme correcteur afin de contrôler les oscillations de la solution dans l’espace et dans le temps. Je prouve la construction d’une solution d’onde plane pour un problème approché en utilisant la notion de solution de viscosité
This thesis deals with the construction of particular solutions of traveling wave or plane wave for different equations partial derivative (EDP) and in particular the Frenkel-Kontorova model and a regularized wave equation. This memory is structured as follows. The chapter 1 is preserved for a general introduction in which i present a physical motivation and a abstract of my work. In chapter 2, I interested to the study the existence and uniqueness of traveling wave solution for the accelerated Frenkel-Kontorova model. This model consist in a system of ODE that describe the motion particles in interaction. The most important applications ihave inmind in the motion of cristal defects called dislocations. For this model, i prove the exxistence of traveling wave solutions under very weak assumptions. The uniqueness of the velocity is also studied as well the uniqueness of the profile which used ddifferent types of strpng maximum principle. As far as we know, this is the first result concerning traveling waves for accelerated, spatially discrete system. This chapter is an article published in the Journal Dynamic and Differential Equation:Existence and uniqueness of traveling wave for accelerated Frenkel-Kontorova model, Journal of dynamic and Differential Equation : Volume 26, Issue 24 (2014), page 1133-1169. In chapter 3, i interested in the numerical homogenization of fully overdomped frenkel-Kontorova model. I present two methods for computing the effective hamiltonian : large time method and Newton-like method. Some simulations of the effective hamiltonian are provided. Le chapter 4 is preserved to the study a wave equation in a periodic medium. Under certain assumption, i construct a plane wave like solution, and show that this solution satisfy some properties. I define a non- local operator and a term corrector in order to control the oscillations of the solution in space and in time. We prove the construction of a plane wave like solution for the approched problem using the notion of viscosity solution

Subtitling differs from the traditional idea of translation – from a written source text to a written target text. The transference is from a source text which consists of verbal information and non-verbal information from audio and visual channels, to a written target text which is constrained by the limited time and space on the screen. Subtitling involves not only transfer across languages but also a change of mode, from the spoken mode to the written mode and sometimes from the mode of moving images or sound effect to the written mode. Given the multimodal nature of film text, subtitling are expected to utilise different filmic signs and produce subtitles that fit into the montage of the film, taking into consideration the technical constraints and target viewers‟ processing effort. With the prevalence of translated audiovisual products, subtitling has drawn a considerable amount of scholarly attention. However, most of the research in this field focuses on the European scene and the language pairs studied are closely related. Given the lack of research into Chinese subtitles and the fact that the Chinese language and culture are very different from the English language and culture, the present study has aimed to investigate the way verbal elements in English-language feature films are translated into Mandarin subtitles in Taiwan. It looks at subtitling in general, subtitling extralinguistic cultural references and subtitling humour. Being descriptive in nature, it describes current translation practice by comparing the source text segment with its corresponding target text one and explores different types of solutions applied. By quantifying the frequency of each solution-type, some trends of subtitling are also generalised. The results show that subtitles of English-language feature films in Taiwan are source- text-oriented, as most of the source-text segments are closely rendered to the target text by source-language-oriented solutions, in which the source-text item undergoes minimum changes. Target-language-oriented solutions are seldom applied and extreme target-language-oriented ones are rarely found. The high percentage of source-language-oriented solutions indicates that Taiwanese subtitlers are reluctant to alter the source text; subtitling, as the preferred method of film translation in Taiwan, is seen as a means to bring the exotic experience to target viewers. It also suggests that most of the source-text elements can be transferred directly as the need to employ content-changing solutions is low. This study also compares its findings with those of other studies which are based on similar methods but focus on Scandinavian subtitling. Contrary to what might be expected, since the linguistic and cultural relatedness and the target audience‟s proficiency in the source language are different in these studies, the results are very similar. The trend towards source orientation in subtitling is observed in recent years across different languages, and it is largely due to globalisation, the influence of US popular culture and information boom that break cultural and linguistic boundaries. It appears that cultural influence is a more important factor than cultural affinity in determining a subtitles choice of solutions.

This study aimed to investigate the types and sources of misconceptions about aqueous solution held by pupils at an elementary school. The purposes were: 1) To develop a suitable instrument related to misconceptions on aqueous solution among the 4th and 6th-graders. 2) To investigate the differences of the misconceptions on aqueous solution held by 4th and 6th-graders. 3) To investigate the differences of the misconceptions on aqueous solution held by different genders. 4) To investigate the types and sources of the misconceptions on aqueous solution held by elementary pupils. 5) To investigate the influences of the content of the textbooks and teaching materials used in the science subject on the misconceptions on aqueous solution held by elementary pupils. The goal of the initial stage of the study was to develop a three-tier diagnostic instrument (TTDI) of computerized aqueous solution concepts. A total of 341 fourth and sixth grade pupils who were selected randomly from six classes at an elementary school in Taipei were tested. The purpose of TTDI was to examine the misconceptions about aqueous solution held by the elementary school pupils. Phase II: Based on the data collected in phase I, there were two sets of pupils selected from each class with a total number of 160. By analyzing the textbooks and group interviews, researchers further investigated the types, modes, and causes of the misconceptions about aqueous solution held by elementary school pupils. The result were: 1) The method of the TTDI with the application of computers was developed in this study. The TTDI has been reviewed and suggested by two experienced science education experts and four senior teachers, has been proven to be scientifically logical and effective. The test of TTDI also ensured the benefits of minimizing the interferences among the questions, enhancing participation, reducing costs, and saving valuable resources. 2) Based on the data analysis using T-test, there were significant differences between the 4th grade and the 6th grade pupils on the correct percentage of the questionnaire toward the aqueous solution concepts. 3) Gender played an important role in these tests. Female pupils scored significantly higher than their male peers. Judging by the average score, the effect of gender was not only found in the 6th grades, but is also is true with the 4th grades. 4) Through tests and interviews, the researcher categorized the misconceptions of aqueous solution into eight types and attributed its causes to the following. a. Reliance on the direct and subjective observation. b. Lack of scientific knowledge. c. Confusion caused by similar terminologies or concepts. d. Experiences derived from daily life. e. Language barrier. f. Influence of the multimedia. g. Misleading by the instructors. h. Influence of the textbooks. 5) From the extensive interviews with the pupils, we found that the misconceptions of the pupils may be also derived from the obscure contents and pictures in the textbooks. From the findings of this study, the researcher recommended textbook authors and elementary science teachers to have an extensive understanding of the misconceptions about aqueous solution among the elementary school pupils before preparing the teaching materials or giving out instructions. Then they can better help the elementary school pupils learn the concepts and gain knowledge of aqueous solution.

ABSTRACT The main purpose of this study was to explore the process of types of solution activities of multiplication word problems in the second grades. A sample of 185 subjects was asked to write down their solution activities in written tests before instruction and after instruction. Six students that were selected because of their learning ability were interviewed individually to probe their process in six different stages. And then, document analysis was used for these collected documents. The result of written tests indicated that there were five correct types of solution activities and the process of second graders'' types of solution activities was from additive calculation before instruction to multiplication calculation after instruction. The result of interviews indicated that the five correct types of solution activities could be divided into 13 subcategories. Moreover, the change pace and the process of types of solution activities were different from student to student, even the pace and the process of the two students in the same group in the same stage were different. The incorrect types of solution activities were more units, fewer units, additive, subtractive, transpose, blank and others. The possible reasons of incorrect types of solution activities were thoughtlessness, the effect of old experiences, misunderstanding of problems and misunderstanding of multiplication. In addition, analysis of types of problems and the effect of numbers'' sizes revealed the types of solution activities were different in three different types of problems and three different sizes of numbers.

According to the types of activities, the nature of the material and technical resources used, technologies, means and management systems, Russian railways belong to the category of high-tech industries that must have high quality and technical level, reliability and technological efficiency in operation. For this reason, the logistics system itself, both in structure and in the algorithm of the functions performed as a whole, needs a serious improvement in the quality of its work. The economic situation in Russia requires a revision of the principles and mechanisms of management based on the corporate model of supply chain management, focused on logistics knowledge. In the difficult economic conditions of the current decade, it is necessary to improve the quality of the supply organization of enterprises and structural divisions of railway transport, directly related to the implementation of the process approach, the advantage of which is a more detailed regulation of management actions and their mutual coordination. In order to increase the efficiency of its activities and develop the management system, Russian Railways is developing a lean production system aimed at further expanding the implementation of the principles of customer orientation, ideology and corporate culture. At the present time, the solution of many issues is impossible without a cybernetic approach to the formulation of problems of material and technical support and logistics analysis of information technologies, to the implementation of the developed algorithms and models of development strategies and concepts for improving the business processes of the production system. The management strategy, or the general plan for the implementation of activities for the management of material resources, is based on a fundamental assessment of the alignment and correlation of forces and factors operating in the economic and political field, taking into account the impact on the specific form of the management strategy. The materials will be useful to the heads and specialists of the directorates of the MTO, CDZs and can be used in the scientific research of bachelors, masters and postgraduates interested in the economics of railway transport and supply logistics.

AbstractAn important problem in finance is the evaluation of the value in the future of assets (e.g., shares in company, currencies, derivatives, patents). The change of the values can be modeled with differential equations. Roughly speaking, a typical differential equation in finance has two components, one deterministic (e.g., rate of interest of bank accounts) and one stochastic (e.g., values of stocks) that is often related to the notion of Brownian motions. The solution of such a differential equation needs the evaluation of Riemann–Stieltjes’s integrals for the deterministic part and Ito’s integrals for the stochastic part. For A few types of such differential equations, it is possible to determine an exact solution, e.g., a geometric Brownian motion. On the other side for almost all stochastic differential equations we can only provide approximations of a solution. We present some numerical methods for solving stochastic differential equations.

AbstractSoftware-as-a-Service (SaaS) pricing addresses decisions of monetary compensation and the conditions for the SaaS solution to the customer. Efficient SaaS pricing requires sophisticated decision-making and analytics, as well as coordination and compromises between the many business functions involved. The decision-making includes integrated analysis of different perspectives and streams of information. Like in many other product management areas, there is no silver-bullet solution for pricing. We conducted a multiple case study using fifteen SaaS companies with data collection primarily through semi-structured interviews to assess SaaS pricing practices and identify major factors that affect the way pricing is done. We identified four distinct types of SaaS pricing patterns and detailed their main characteristics.

AbstractWhen a public sector organisation (PSO) uses a software as a service (SaaS) solution from a global provider this imposes risks for different types of lock-in effects. In turn, use of such solutions by PSOs may prevent full control of digital assets that need to be created, processed, maintained, and archived for use and reuse over long life-cycles. This paper addresses perceived and actual lock-in effects related to use of SaaS solutions in the public sector. We review perceptions of lock-in amongst government agencies and investigate how 46 PSOs have addressed challenges related to obtaining licences and an effective exit plan related to use of the Microsoft Office 365 SaaS solution. Through a review of responses to a survey conducted by the Swedish Government Offices we find significant misconceptions concerning lock-in effects. We find that every one of the 46 PSOs investigated neither obtained necessary licences nor established an effective exit strategy to allow the PSO to independently access, process and maintain digital assets processed by the SaaS solution after decommissioning. We present recommendations for any PSO considering use of a SaaS solution.

With the advent of cheap and available sensors, there is a need for intelligent sensor selection and placement for various purposes. While previous research was focused on the most efficient sensor networks, we present a new mathematical framework for efficient and resilient sensor network installation. Specifically, in this work we formulate and solve a sensor selection and placement problem when network resilience is also a factor in the optimization problem. Our approach is based on the binary linear programming problem. The generic formulation is probabilistic and applicable to any sensor types, line-of-site and non-line-of-site, and any sensor modality. It also incorporates several realistic constraints including finite sensor supply, cost, energy consumption, as well as specified redundancy in coverage areas that require resilience. While the exact solution is computationally prohibitive, we present a fast algorithm that produces a near-optimal solution that can be used in practice. We show how such formulation works on 2D examples, applied to infrared (IR) sensor networks designed to detect and track human presence and movements in a specified coverage area. Analysis of coverage and comparison of sensor placement with and without resilience considerations is also performed.

There is an existing issue in human-machine interaction, such that drivers of semi-autonomous vehicles are still required to take over control of the vehicle during system limitations. A possible solution may lie in tactile displays, which can present status, direction, and position information while avoiding sensory (e.g., visual and auditory) channels overload to reliably help drivers make timely decisions and execute actions to successfully take over. However, limited work has investigated the effects of meaningful tactile signals on takeover performance. This study synthesizes literature investigating the effects of tactile displays on takeover performance in automated vehicles and conducts a human-subject study to design and test the effects of six meaningful tactile signal types and two pattern durations on drivers’ perception and performance during automated driving. The research team performed a literature review of 18 articles that conducted human-subjects experiments on takeover performance utilizing tactile displays as takeover requests. Takeover performance in these studies were highlighted, such as response times, workload, and accuracy. The team then conducted a human-subject experiment, which included 16 participants that used a driving simulator to present 30 meaningful vibrotactile signals, randomly across four driving sessions measuring for reaction times (RTs), interpretation accuracy, and subjective ratings. Results from the literature suggest that tactile displays can present meaningful vibrotactile patterns via various in-vehicle locations to help improve drivers’ performance during the takeover and can be used to assist in the design of human-machine interfaces (HMI) for automated vehicles. The experiment yielded results illustrating higher urgency patterns were associated with shorter RTs and higher intuitive ratings. Also, pedestrian status and headway reduction signals presented shorter RTs and increased confidence ratings compared to other tactile signal types. Finally, the signal types that yielded the highest accuracy were the surrounding vehicle and navigation signal types. Implications of these findings may lie in informing the design of next-generation in-vehicle HMIs and future human factors studies on human-automation interactions.

Cracks and their formations in concrete structures have been a common and long-lived problem, mainly due to the intrinsic brittleness of the concrete. Concrete structures, such as rigid pavement and bridge decks, are prone to deformations and deteriorations caused by shrinkage, temperature fluctuation, and traffic load, which can affect their service life. Rehabilitation of concrete structures is expensive and challenging—not only from maintenance viewpoints but also because they cannot be used for services during maintenance. It is critical to significantly improve the ductility of concrete to overcome such issues and to enable better infrastructure quality. To this end, the self-healing cementitious composites (SHCC) investigated in this work could be a promising solution to the aforementioned problems. In this project, the team has designed a series of cementitious composites to investigate their mechanical performances and self-healing abilities. Firstly, various types of fibers were investigated for improving ductility of the designed SHCC. To enhance the self-healing of SHCC, we proposed and examined that the combination of the internal curing method with SHCC mixture design can further improve self-healing performance. Three types of internal curing agents were used on the SHCC mixture design, and their self-healing efficiency was evaluated by multiple destructive and non-destructive tests. Results indicated a significant improvement in the self-healing capacity with the incorporation of internal curing agents such as zeolite and lightweight aggregate. To control the fiber distribution and workability of the SHCC, the mix design was further adjusted by controlling rheology using different types of viscosity modifiers. The team also explored the feasibility of the incorporation of colloidal nano-silica into the mix design of SHCC. Results suggest that optimum amounts of nano-silica have positive influence on self-healing efficiency and mechanical properties of the SHCC. Better hydration was also achieved by adding the nano-silica. The bonding strength of the SHCC with conventional concrete was also improved. At last, a standardized mixing procedure for the large scale SHCC was drafted and proposed.

A set of experiments was conducted to expose different types of energized electrical cords for lamps, office equipment, and appliances to a developing room fire exposure. All of the cords were positioned on the floor and arranged in a manner to receive a similar thermal exposure. Six types of cords commonly used as power supply cords, extension cords, and as part of residential electrical wiring systems were chosen for the experiments. The non-metallic sheathed cables (NMB) typically found in residential electrical branch wiring were included to provide a link to previous research. The basic test design was to expose the six different types of cords, on the floor of a compartment to a growing fire to determine the conditions under which the cord would trip the circuit breaker and/or undergo an arc fault. All of the cords would be energized and installed on a non-combustible surface. Six cord types (18-2 SPT1, 16-3 SJTW, 12-2 NM-B, 12-3 NM-B, 18-3 SVT, 18-2 NISPT-2) and three types of circuit protection (Molded case circuit breaker (MCCB), combination Arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI), Ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI)) were exposed to six room-scale fires. The circuit protection was remote from the thermal exposure. The six room fires consisted of three replicate fires with two sofas as the main fuel source, two replicate fires with one sofa as the main fuel source and one fire with two sofas and MDF paneling on three walls in the room. Each fuel package was sufficient to support flashover conditions in the room and as a result, the impact on the cords and circuit protection was not significantly different. The average peak heat release rate of the sofa fueled compartment fires with gypsum board ceiling and walls was 6.8 MW. The addition of vinyl covered MDF wall paneling on three of the compartment walls increased the peak heat release rate to 12 MW, although most of the increased energy release occurred outside of the compartment opening. In each experiment during post flashover exposure, the insulation on the cords ignited and burned through, exposing bare conductor. During this period the circuits faulted. The circuit protection devices are not designed to provide thermal protection, and, thus, were installed remote from the fire. The devices operated as designed in all experiments. All of the circuit faults resulted in either a magnetic trip of the conventional circuit breaker or a ground-fault trip in the GFCI or AFCI capable circuit protection devices. Though not required by UL 1699, Standard for Safety for Arc-Fault Circuit-Interrupters as the solution for detection methodology, the AFCIs used had differential current detection. Examination of signal data showed that the only cord types that tripped with a fault to ground were the insulated conductors in non-metallic sheathed cables (12-2 NM-B and 12-3 NM-B). This was expected due to the bare grounding conductor present. Assessments of both the thermal exposure and physical damage to the cords did not reveal any correlation between the thermal exposure, cord damage, and trip type.

Background: Engineered carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are expected to be increasingly released into the environment with the rapid increase in their production and use. The discharged CNTs may interact with coexisting contaminants and subsequently change environmental behaviors and ecological effects of both the CNTs themselves and the contaminants. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a critical role in the transport of CNTs in the aquatic environment, affecting both CNT's surface properties through adsorption, and its colloidal stability in solution. Therefore, CNT-bound DOM complexes may interact with coexisting contaminants, thus affecting their environmental fate. With increasing production and use of CNTs, there is an increasing risk that humans could be exposed to CNTs mainly through ingestion and inhalation. Since CNTs can be carriers of contaminants due to their high adsorption affinity and capacity, the distribution of these nanoparticles in the environment holds a potential environmental and health risk. Project objectives: The overall goal of this project was to gain a better understanding of the environmental behavior of engineered nanoparticles with DOM and organic pollutant in aqueous systems. The scope of this study includes: characterizing various types of engineered nanoparticles and their interaction with DOM; binding studies of organic contaminants by nanoparticles and DOM-nanoparticle complexes; and examining interactions in DOM-nanoparticles-contaminant systems. Major conclusions, solutions and achievements: DOM has a pronounced effect on colloidal stability of CNTs in solution and on their surface chemistry and reactivity toward associated contaminants. The structure and chemical makeup of both CNTs and DOM determine their interactions and nature of formed complexes. CNTs, contaminants and DOM can co-occur in the aquatic environment. The occurrence of co-contaminants, as well as of co-introduction of DOM, was found to suppress the adsorption of organic contaminants to CNTs through both competition over adsorption sites and direct interactions in solution. Furthermore, the release of residual contaminants from CNTs could be enhanced by biomolecules found in the digestive as well as the respiratory tracts, thus increasing the bioaccessibility of adsorbed contaminants and possibly the overall toxicity of contaminant-associated CNTs. Contaminant desorption could be promoted by both solubilization and sorptive competition by biological surfactants. Scientific and agricultural implications: The information gained in the current project may assist in predicting the transport and fate of both CNTs and associated contaminants in the natural environment. Furthermore, the results imply a serious health risk from contaminant-associated CNTs.

A large international airport is a microcosm of the entire aviation sector, hosting hundreds of different types of aviation and non-aviation stakeholders: aircraft, passengers, airlines, travel agencies, air traffic management and control, retails shops, runway systems, building management, ground transportation, and much more. Their associated information technology and cyber physical systems—along with an exponentially resultant number of interconnections—present a massive cybersecurity challenge. Unlike the physical security challenge, which was treated in earnest throughout the last decades, cyber-attacks on airports keep coming, but most airport lack essential means to confront such cyber-attacks. These missing means are not technical tools, but rather holistic regulatory directives, technical and process standards, guides, and best practices for airports cybersecurity—even airport cybersecurity concepts and basic definitions are missing in certain cases. Unsettled Topics Concerning Airport Cybersecurity Standards and Regulation offers a deeper analysis of these issues and their causes, focusing on the unique characteristics of airports in general, specific cybersecurity challenges, missing definitions, and conceptual infrastructure for the standardization and regulation of airports cybersecurity. This last item includes the gaps and challenges in the existing guides, best-practices, standards, and regulation pertaining to airport cybersecurity. Finally, practical solution-seeking processes are proposed, as well as some specific potential frameworks and solutions.

In the new socio-economic conditions in the education system, forms of organization of tourist and local history activities are developing, which are based on traditions, experience of extracurricular and extracurricular work, taking into account the changes that have occurred in the country. Life requires that the tasks facing educational institutions are resolved quickly and have not just any solution, but one that optimizes the pedagogical process. At the same time, these requirements come into conflict with the state of the education system, the limited ability of most parents to create conditions for the full development of the child. The tasks facing the education system can be implemented in tourism and local history activities. The main task is to create the necessary conditions for the comprehensive development of the child’s personality, his social adaptation in the process of participation in various types of tourist and local history activities. However, the school teacher is not ready to organize and conduct tourist and local history activities at school, as he is not professionally prepared for this activity. Questions of the organization, forms and methods of teacher training for the organization of tourist and local history activities are practically not reflected in the educational and methodological literature. There are no scientific studies that would allow us to effectively solve the pedagogical tasks of preparing the organizers of tourist and local history activities in the school.

The goal of this project was to provide scientific and technical basis for initiating the development of breeding protocols using marker assisted selection for viral disease resistance in common carp. The specific objectives were: 1) Establishing families and characterizing the phenotypic and genetic variation of viral resistance; 2) Measuring the dynamics of immune response and developing a method to measure the long term immune memory; 3) Developing markers and generating a new genetic linkage map, which will enable initial QTL mapping; and, 4) Identifying genetic linkage of markers and candidate genes (like MHC and TLRs) with resistance to CyHV-3. The common carp is an important farmed freshwater fish species in the world. Edible carp is second only to tilapia in Israeli aquaculture production and ornamental carp (koi) is an important product in both the US and Israel. Carp industries worldwide have recently suffered enormous economic damage due to a viral disease caused by Cyprinid herpes virus 3 (CyHV-3). Aside from preventative measures, a sustainable solution to this problem will be to establish a genetic improvement program of the resistance of fish to the pathogen. The aims of the project was to take the necessary first steps towards that. The differences in survival rates after infection with CyHV-3 virus among 20 families from six types of crosses between three carp lines (two commercial lines and one wild-type carp) revealed that the wild-type carp and its crosses had a much-improved survival over the crosses of the commercial lines themselves. These crosses set the starting point for breeding of commercial strains with improved resistance. Resistant fish had lower antibody titer against the virus suggesting that resistance might depend more on the innate immunity. A set of 500 microsateliite markers was developed and the markers are currently being used for generating a genetic linkage map for carp and for identifying disease resistance QTL. Fourteen candidate immune genes, some of which were duplicated, were cloned from the carp and SNP markers were identified in them. The expression of these genes varied between tissues and suggested functional divergence of some duplicated genes. Initial association between CyHV-3 resistance and one of the genes was found when SNP alleles in these genes were tested for their segregation between susceptible and resistant progeny. The results of this project have implications to the development of viral resistant commercial carp strains and effective immunization against this aggressive disease. The genetic and immunological knowledge accumulated in this project will not only promote carp and koi production but will also contribute to a broader understanding of fish immunogenetics.

The article discusses the importance of the skills of primary school students to solve experimental problems in chemistry and the conditions for the use of virtual chemical laboratories in the process of the formation of these skills. The concept of “experimental chemical problem” was analyzed, classifications were considered, and methodological conditions for using experimental chemical problems in the process of teaching chemistry were described. The essence of the concept of “virtual chemical laboratories” is considered and their main types, advantages and disadvantages that define the methodically reasonable limits of the use of these software products in the process of teaching chemistry, in particular, to support the educational chemical experiment are described. The capabilities of the virtual chemical laboratory VLab to support the process of solving experimental problems in chemistry in grade 9 have been determined. The main advantages and disadvantages of the virtual chemical laboratory VLab on the modeling of chemical processes necessary for the creation of virtual experimental problems in chemistry are analyzed. The features of the virtual chemical laboratory VLab, the essence of its work and the creation of virtual laboratory work in it are described. The results of the study is the development of a set of experimental tasks in chemistry for students in grade 9 on the topic “Solutions” in the cloud-oriented virtual chemical laboratory VLab.
