The digital age has crept over the present generation. Digital tools and warehouses are more and more being used by the organizations to manage the collections. Today's librarian faces the problem of managing and sharing the information and delivering it to the right person before it is outdated. In this regard, social media sites have emerged as an important communication tool for the librarians to reach their users and promote their products and services. The present chapter explores various social media tools and their application and usage in the libraries.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is twofold: to explore what kinds of social media content public libraries create to communicate with users online, and to examine the relationships between social media content types and corresponding levels of user engagement.Design/methodology/approachThe sample comprises 4,637 Facebook posts collected from 151 public libraries across the USA. The authors identified ten types of Facebook posts based on the open coding, and calculated the degrees of user engagement for each type of Facebook post, represented by the numbers of likes, shares and comments. Also, The authors examined the effects of the inclusions of images or video clips on user engagement.FindingsThe authors observed that the most frequent type of post was related to announcing upcoming events held in libraries. This study also found that posts about community news or emotionally inspiring messages elicited much engagement from users. Posts having an image or images tend to receive more user engagement.Practical implicationsBased on the findings of this study, the authors discussed practical strategies for public libraries to effectively use social media to better facilitate user engagement.Originality/valueThis study is one of a few attempts that examine the relationships between the types of social media content and the degrees of user engagement in public library environments. Also, the authors have proposed a coding scheme useful to analyze social media content in the context of public libraries.

Déjà Vu is a platform for the end-user development of web applications. It reduces the complexity of web development by encapsulating common functionality across the web into a library of clichés. Users select clichés that represent core concepts in their application, specify various configuration variables and include actions that add the desired functionality to their application. This thesis focuses on creating a cliché library for social applications (e.g. planning events, crowd-sourcing opinions, etc.). The catalogue of clichés and their actions were evaluated by replicating student projects from an undergraduate web development course. Most of the core functionality was replicated for each sample. The applications built with Déjà Vu will also serve as a reference and/ or starting point for future application developers.

Thesis (M.Inf) --University of Limpopo, 2019.
The use of social media (SM) tools in both public and private institutions is growing remarkably. Academic libraries, in particular are confronted with serious challenges of becoming the leader in adopting various SM platforms to enhance the delivery of library and information services to their users. This study investigated the extent and ways in which librarians attached to the University of Limpopo library use SM platforms in the provision of library and information services to their patrons. The study examined types of SM tools used, purposes that SM tools are used for in academic libraries, factors that determine and impede the use of SM, as well as the attitudes of the library staff towards the use of SM in providing library and information services. The study adopted a qualitative research approach through the use of a semi-structured interview (administered face-to-face) with 10 academic librarians at the University of Limpopo (UL) as a data collection method. The findings of the study show that UL library staff largely use SM platforms such as Facebook to market and promote library services as well as Library-Blog to liaise with the schools or faculties. The study further revealed that librarians at UL are not in charge of SM applications. Instead the Marketing and Communication Department administrator is responsible for the management of SM in the university. The study notes that library personnel are aware of various SM platforms. Therefore, it has a direct influence on their use in work-related tasks. Moreover, the ease of use, low cost, high demand and usefulness of SM applications are contributory factors which motivated the librarians to want to use it. The study further reveals factors that inhibit the effective use of these applications and recommends that library management should create SM policies to boost the effective use of SM for the benefit of library patrons.

The aim of this master's thesis is to study public libraries' marketing on the social media site Twitter. To achieve this goal, the Twitter accounts of four Swedish public libraries were studied for several months. The four libraries that were studied consist of Stockholm library, Lidingö library, Malmö library, and Gothenburg library. The marketing theory that inspired me is called the seven Ps of marketing, which is a marketing mix that is specifically developed for service industries. My main sources in the application of the theory have been the works of Ned Potter and Eileen Elliott de Sáez, which combine marketing with the field of library and information science. Netnography, a qualitative method that studies online communities, has been applied as methodology. The methods that have been used consist of online observations and e-mail interviews. It was seen that the libraries use Twitter as a marketing tool to attain more users and to strengthen their ties with the existing users. Through Twitter, libraries promote their products to users. The communication between the library and its users becomes an important factor in marketing the library on Twitter. It was observed that users play an active role in marketing the library on Twitter. Users not only shape the marketing of the library through their responses but they also contribute to the marketing of the library by retweeting libraries' tweets or "mentioning" the libraries on Twitter. This is a two years master's thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

The background of the project is partly found in a long tradition within library and information science (LIS) of meta-analyses on the field, partly in a science studies discussion on research fields and their contextual relation to wider academia, fields of professional

practices and professionalization processes. The general purpose of the project is to analyze the social and intellectual development and organization of LIS; and to investigate the impact of the close relation to the practice field, as well as the relation to the academic world in general. Based on the general purpose of the project and results and interpretations of the four articles attached to the thesis, three questions were stated for discussion in the thesis proper, concerning: the effects of a dual origin and LIS as a discipline, a field of research and a field of practice, the purpose of meta-studies and implications in terms of identity and perception of LIS; and competition and cooperation with other fields of research. Because of the heterogeneous nature of LIS, a variety of methods and materials was used in the different articles; and methodological issues on limits and bias in bibliographic databases – and the implications on the perception of research areas with varying publication and citation behaviour – were discussed. The analyses were performed against a theoretical framework, providing key organizational characteristics of scientific fields, relating to social, intellectual and contextual aspects, in combination with theories on scientific and disciplinary development, professionalization and interdisciplinarity; but also, for analytical contrast: alternate theories on the development of the sciences since 1945. LIS shows two distinct paths of development: research areas developing out of other fields of research; and a disciplinary development originating out of the field of practice and institutions for educating practitioners. Analyzing meta-studies of LIS, the picture of a field with a vague identity and a diverse self-understanding, even in terms of core characteristics, emerges. The relation to the wider academic community is characterized by diffuse boundaries towards, and competition from, other fields of research. In general, LIS is a fragmented field with a multitude of wildly varying research areas; and with large variations in terms of organizational setting; which together with a vague identity and diffuse boundaries, as well as the close connections to the field of practice, might contribute towards explaining problems LIS have been experiencing, establishing itself in academia. However, there are also signs towards an integration of a number of LIS research areas, as well as an increase in interdisciplinary cooperation, contradicting theories suggesting a further fragmentation; and supporting ideas on the sciences developing towards e.g. interdisciplinarity and applicability of results.

The principle that libraries have a role to play in the provision of information for jobseekers is recognised widely in public library authorities across the country, not only by the authorities themselves, but also by other bodies concerned with jobseekers. However, the range and variety of initiatives is capable of generating confusion among jobseekers. The library is well placed to act as a focus for information for jobseekers - information that comes from a variety of institutions and initiatives and is not only confined to vacancies. This thus poses three questions which the research attempts to answer :- - is the library at the focus? - is the library seen to be at the focus? - if not, why not - if so, how does it make it work? This project approaches these questions by contributing to the current national debates as to the future development of information agencies, policies and initiatives through the interviews with Job Centre clients, a group whose views in this area have never before been canvassed and who, therefore, offer a new perspective on the issues. This debate has raised the potential of the public library network as an agent of social and economic regeneration, a role of the public library previously accepted within the service, but rarely without. The thesis demonstrates the interface between the social and economic potential of the public library and the needs and demands of the 'information poor', as well as highlighting the importance of the recreational role of the Public Library. The methods used to answer these questions were threefold. Firstly, a survey was carried out of all public library authorities in England and Wales. Of the surveys distributed, 82% were completed, an excellent rate of response. It is clear from this survey that the overwhelming majority of public library authorities feel that it is their role to provide services for jobseekers. The survey also shows that many authorities provide a wide range of non-statutory services. This provision of the "newer" technologies is important for jobseekers as they are generally unable to afford to purchase such technology. The survey also indicated that the view of jobseekers held by public library authorities was an inclusive one, and covered those both in and out of work. Secondly, case-study authorities were chosen from the respondents to the questionnaire. These were selected on the basis of declared level of provision, and also on type of authority. Four case studies were selected, one County Council (Wiltshire), two Urban Authorities (Lewisham and Manchester) and one Welsh Authority (Wrexham). The selection was carried out thus in order to reflect the preponderance of Urban Authorities in the respondents to the original survey. These case studies have investigated the demographics, control and profile of the authorities involved. Managers and staff of library authorities were interviewed about provision and provision was viewed on site and assessed with reference to other case studies and two models of provision, the 'integrative' and the 'targeted' were identified. Thirdly, interviews were undertaken with clients of Job Centres in the case-study authorities. Ninety-four interviews were carried out across the four authorities. These interviews investigated jobseekers use of both the public library and other information providers in this area, and also assessed jobseekers' attitudes towards the public library. The survey showed that almost 70% of those interviewed used the public library, with 48% of these using the library at least once a month. Just over half of the respondents said that the Public library was for everyone and should provide useful information for jobseekers. Only 16% said that the library was not the place for jobseekers to obtain information. When asked if they would use the Public Library if it advertised services useful to jobseekers, 94% said that they would. This empirical work has been placed within a theoretical framework based on the work of Jiirgen Habermas. The public library is "arguably the nearest thing we have in Britain to an achieved Public Sphere" (Webster 1995) and this research enables the conception of the Public Library as an achieved Public Sphere to be reassessed and, therefore, the role of the public library to be reconceptualised.

Many people today use social media in one way or another, and many of these platforms have released APIs developers can use to integrate social media in their applications. As many of these platforms share a lot of functionality we see a need for developing a library, to contain these, and ease the development process when working with the platforms. The purpose of this paper is to find common functionality and explore the possibility of generalization in this regard. We first look for common denominators between the top social media networks, and using this information we attempt to make an implementation to evaluate the practicality. After the development process we analyze our findings and discuss the usability and maintainability of such a library. Our findings show that the current state of the studied APIs are not suitable for generalization.

It is well recognized that one of the hardest problems in the Open Access arena is how to ‘flip’ the flagship society journals in the humanities and social sciences. Their revenue from a flagship journal is critical to the scholarly society. On the one hand, it is true that the paywall which guards the subscription system from unauthorized access is marginalizing whole categories of scholars and learners. On the other hand, “flipping”to an APC based model simply marginalizes some of the same people and institutions on the authorship side. Various endowment or subsidy models of flipping create the idea of Samaritans and “freeloaders” which bring into question their sustainability. I propose re-thinking the relationship between publisher and author. The publisher should act as the experts in dissemination and should take on the responsibility of maximizing the dissemination of the author’s work by providing the author’s accepted manuscript (AAM) to an appropriate repository and taking down the paywall. When requests for an article come to the publisher instead of presenting non-subscribers with a paywall, they instead direct the request to the repository in which the AAM has been archived. This walk-through of Maximum Dissemination is followed by: A statement from Princeton’s Professor Stanley Katz, president emeritus of the American Council of Learned Societies A youtube video by Associate Professor of Sociology Smith Radhakrishnan which is attached to this submission, is available at http://youtu.be/sPO66vuTFJ0.

The National Library of Medicine is poised to launch its third century of providing library services to serve science and society. The nature of scientific communications is changing, with rapid growth in archival literature, new artifacts of communication artifacts such as preprints, pipelines and data sets, and a scholarly and social public greater attuned to video and sound productions than to the printed word. The NLM Director will describe the exciting steps the NLM is taking to prepare for this future, and identify critical challenges that can only be solved through partnerships between the NLM and the publishing community.

This paper is a critical sequel to John Dove’s paper titled “Maximum Dissemination: A possible model for society journals in the humanities and social sciences to support Open while retaining their subscription revenue”, presented at the Charleston Conference 2019. Dove’s OA advocacy has included both gold and green. Dove’s innovative model, which makes full use of the green route to achieve maximum dissemination of authors’ works through open repositories, suggests a switch in the functional responsibility for depositing author’s manuscript from author to publisher. The model has publishers to act as agents of the authors as much through the green route as their subscription route. Dove has suggested this maximum use of the green path by the publisher for specific journals in specific disciplines. This paper looks to examine the feasibility of green OA model in this context, and then to consider other ways to expand on this idea to other green OA supporting publishers. It further looks at the possibilities of the model driving the re-emergence of green OA as a favoured option for facilitating immediate and parallel dissemination of authors’ papers through both green and subscription channels.

A new dual-campus subject librarian program is being rolled out at the University of Central Florida (UCF) whereby several subject librarians divide their time between two campuses, the legacy main campus in East Orlando and the new Downtown Orlando Campus. As of Fall 2019, four UCF subject librarians regularly travel to the new Downtown Campus to provide library support for academic programs, faculty, and students who recently relocated to the new facility. Dual-campus subject librarians are also maintaining support services for their assigned academic programs that remain at the UCF Main Campus. This article provides information and reflections about how the dual-campus subject librarian model operates and how it impacts staff duties from two perspectives. The first perspective is from the UCF Social Sciences subject librarian, who supports graduate and undergraduate programs in The School of Public Administration and Public Affairs graduate programs at the Downtown Campus, as well as graduate and undergraduate programs in Politics, Security & International Affairs and Criminal Justice at the Main Campus. The second perspective is from the Main Campus Head of the Research and Information Services Department, who supervises the dual-campus subject librarians.

The American Library Association’s 1982 statement on Diversity in Collection Development reminds librarians of our professional responsibility “to select and support the access to materials on all subjects that meet, as closely as possible, the needs, interests, and abilities of all persons in the community the library serves. This includes materials that reflect political, economic, religious, social, minority, and sexual issues.” The William H. Hannon (WHH) Library’s vision statementaffirms that the library views itself as Bridge, Gateway, Agora, and Enterprise. To ensure that our materials collection aligns with our institutional vision and meets the research needs of our diverse campus population, the project team proposed an assessment of our electronic collection through the lens of diversity. The assessment was to determine if the library’s online databases (most often the first point of research consultation for our students and faculty) are adequately “bridging disciplines” (Bridge) and “representing diverse topics and perspectives” (Gateway). What the team learns will inform the library collection strategy, to ensure that it builds collections that deliberately and positively contribute to an inclusive campus climate. Conceived at the Library Publishing Forum in 2017, the Ethical Framework for Library Publishing was a first-of-its-kind document for the LPC and the library publishing community. But remarkable social upheaval in the ensuing years, along with the continued maturation of our discipline, prompted the LPC to convene a task force to update the Framework for our current environment. What the task force developed, to our surprise, looks very little like the original document. An Ethical Framework for Library Publishing Version 2.0 is a true framework to help library publishers set an ethical baseline for their programs and activities. Consisting of four basic Frames, each with their own set of Statements and Guidance, the Framework gives the reader a scaffolding for ethical thinking in library publishing.

This is the first report of a six-month pilot cohort program from 2021, Accelerating the Social Impact of Research (ASIR). The pilot engaged small teams from eight ARL member libraries who wanted to share strategies to accelerate the adoption and implementation of open-science principles for social-impact research and scholarship. The report, Accelerating Social Impact Research: Libraries at the Intersection of Openness and Community-Engaged Scholarship, sets the context for this confluence, draws examples from the participating members of the cohort, and identifies the opportunities available for research library leaders. The next installments of this publication series will include additional profiles of the cohort libraries and how they are advancing open scholarship and community engagement.

This paper reports a method for converting versions 5 and 6 of the GTAP Data Base into a global SAM that is stored in both the GAMS data exchange (GDX) and Header Array (HAR) formats. The focus of attention is on the generation of a SAM representation of the GTAP Data Base that is fully consistent with the GTAP model; as such the resultant SAM can be readily used to calibrate a version of the GTAP model that had been coded in GAMS. The GAMS code used to generate the SAM representation of the GTAP Data Base is provided as a GAMS model library – this code has been tested with versions 5.3, 5.4 and 6.0 (pre release 5) of the GTAP Data Base. Keywords: Social Accounting Matrix, Trade Analysis, Computable General Equilibrium.

Cornel West, widely seen as one of the most prophetic intellectuals of our generation, has famously said: “Never forget that justice is what love looks like in public.” This teaching, bringing together love and justice, also serves as one that links together the highest aspirations of Islamic spirituality and governance (Ihsan) and justice (‘adl). Within the realm of Islamic thought, Muqtedar Khan has written a thoughtful volume recently on the social and political implications of the key concept in Islamic spirituality, Ihsan.[1] The present essay serves to bring together these two by taking a look at some of the main insights of the Black-led Freedom Movement for Islamic governance and spirituality.

The Institute for Policy & Social Research (IPSR) at the University of Kansas received funding from the Economic Development Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CARES Act to study broadband access in the state of Kansas. To conduct this study, IPSR examined existing data, fielded our own survey of broadband speeds and access, conducted focus groups, and commissioned a chapter on the digital divide within the state of Kansas. The report discusses available data sources and introduces the speed test data collected by IPSR in order to map the broadband access landscape in Kansas. Along with speed tests, the Kansas broadband survey collected information regarding broadband access, adequacy, affordability and satisfaction. The survey data were enhanced by interviews and focus groups that allowed Kansans to share their struggles with internet access in their own words. The report also investigates digital equity using surveys and interviews conducted at public libraries that revealed the challenges faced by library patrons, including lack of digital access and literacy. The report that is summarized below indicates a rural-urban digital divide in terms of access, affordability, and satisfaction with broadband services. The data in this report indicate that up to 1,000,000 Kansans live in regions that lack access to highspeed broadband services, now considered to be 100 megabits per second (Mbps) download and 20 Mbps upload (100/20). Close to half of survey respondents (46%) report dissatisfaction with broadband services.
