People are social animals; thus, social influence can significantly affect people's behavior. Conformity has been discussed for years as it's a great example of how social pressure can affect a person's thoughts and behaviors. Scientists have carried out a bunch of experiments to research conformity. Asch's experiment, for example, shows how social pressure can influence a person's decision to make the right choice. Conformity can also result in a series of effects and problems. Bystander effects, for example, show how informational social influence can affect people's behavior. Blind obedience shows how conformity can cause crimes and disasters. This paper doesn't promote social determinism but shows the relationship between social pressure and people's moral standing. Several experiments and studies and related social events will also be included. It's concluded that it is possible that our morality is not just a matter of goodwill but also the result of conformity.

To explore the law of megaproject social responsibility behavior (MSRB) among internal organizations under institutional pressure, this paper presents a theoretical and empirical study to investigate how institutional pressure affects MSRB through the mediating role of organizational social responsibility cognition and the mediating roles of the communication mechanism and relationship strength based on new institutional sociology. Based on a total of 147 responses from a broad questionnaire survey, structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to test the proposed hypotheses. The research results show that institutional pressure has a promoting effect on MSRB, and organizational social responsibility cognition mediates the relationship between institutional pressure and MSRB. Additionally, the communication mechanism and relationship strength have no effect on the relationship between institutional pressures and MSRB. The research results provide a new theoretical foundation for the analysis of MSRB and practical suggestions for policymakers on the governance of MSRB.

The proposed research aims to explore the influences of authority power and social proof while considering personality characteristics in a post-pandemic virtual environment. This study will be conducted online as a conceptual replication of a recent experimental study (Danay et al., 2016) that was conducted in person and compared social influence strategies drawn from two of psychology’s most classic studies. This replication will include several personality factors. Scripts, language, inflection, and tone will imitate the classic Milgram experiments of the 1960s to display authority power, while a virtual version of the classic Asch line study will mimic social proof (Asch, 1955; Milgram, 1963). Participants will choose between Milgram’s authoritative commands and Asch’s intense social pressure. Prior to entering the live experiment participants will complete the Big 5 Inventory (BFI; McCrae & Costa, 2003), Locus of Control Scale (LCS; Rotter, 1966), and Adult Attachment Questionnaire (Simpson, et al., 1996). The two social forces (authority vs. social pressure) will be compared during the proposed study. The hypotheses posed are as follows: H1) It is expected that a majority of participants will be influenced by social proof rather than authority. H2) Agreeableness and openness will negatively correlate with authority and positively correlate with social proof. H3) External locus of control will positively correlate with authority. H4) Individuals with an avoidant attachment style will adhere to authority while anxiously attached individuals will follow social proof. This research may provide insight into forces that influence an individual’s judgment in a virtual environment.

This article presents an analysis of the relationship between psychosocial risks, highlighting the management of the intervention, a theoretical framework that underpins some of the factors analysed in the doctoral research, which aims to assess the working conditions in the context of the action of first-line interveners in social reception. To obtain these data, a questionnaire was applied to obtain information on the perception of social workers in the various aspects of their professional daily lives that influence their health and well-being. It is concluded that it is necessary to enable professionals with stress-coping strategies, such as engagement - by analysing positive experiences and conditions favourable to well-being in the workplace (Extremera et.al., 2005; Gonçalves, 2020); coping (adaptation to circumstances and situations); supervision; triggering (good) social support; as well as working and applying in practice individual characteristics and physiological release mechanisms, complemented by a resilient posture and locus of control, adaptation to change, overcoming obstacles and resistance to pressure (Gonçalves, 2020, p.28; Fernandez-Barrocal, 2021).

This study aims to investigate the influence of social pressures on the academic performance of Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students at NU-Nazareth. Students may experience various types of social pressure, including peer pressure, family pressure, and academic pressure, which can impact their academic performance and well-being. Social pressure is the influence exerted on an individual by peers, family, or society to conform to certain behaviors, leading to affect their motivation, focus, and overall success in school. Insufficient literature on social pressures experienced by HUMSS students, their impact on academic performance, and coping mechanisms are the reasons why the researchers conducted this study. The study will be utilizing qualitative research employing a phenomenological approach to identify how external factors affect a student's academic success, explore the different ways in which social pressures impact academic performance, and know the coping mechanism that HUMSS students use to manage social pressure in order to achieve their academic goals. Using thematic analysis, the findings of the study were: 1.) HUMSS Students Experienced Family Pressure as the Most Common Type of Social Pressure Driven by High Standards and Expectations by Parents; 2.) The Influence of Social Pressure to the Academic Performance of HUMSS Students; 3.) HUMSS Students' Strategies for Managing and Coping with Social Pressures. Based on the study's findings, it is crucial for parents to engage in open communication with their children, balancing aspirations with realistic expectations, and encouraging dialogue about academic goals and challenges. Moreover, future research should delve into the potential long-term effects of social pressure on students' academic, physical, and personal well-being beyond their time in educational institutions, employing both qualitative and quantitative approaches for a comprehensive understanding in sociology and psychology.

Whether a person’s belief or action is the result of nature or nurture is a classical debate in the realm of psychology. The source of morality is one of the most heated topics of this grand debate. Some philosophers and psychologists argue that morality is the result of nature and instinct. Although many of their arguments are sound, one cannot neglect the role played by society regarding the shape of one’s morality. This research aims to take a close examination of the relationship between the moral position of an individual and social influence. To accomplish this end, this research combines the methods of psychology and the duality of moral dilemmas. More specifically, this research reviews, modifies, and combines Asch’s conformity experiment, the Third Wave Experiment, and the trolly problem. Currently, this experiment remains at the designing stage and specific details future may be altered.

The old paradigm in technology adoption focuses on the technical implementation and uptake of innovation. A new paradigm has emerged that considers the social, cultural, and political context in which innovation is implemented and addresses the enablers and constraints to its effective diffusion and utilisation. To that end, we apply the institutional theory as a social lens to examine the diffusion of B2B technology in Thailand. This study posits that mimetic, coercive and normative pressures may influence B2B technology utilisation and performance. Data were collected from firms that have adopted B2B technology in the tourism industry. The Partial Least Squares method was used for data analysis. Results show that normative and coercive pressures had a significant influence on firms’ utilisation of B2B technology, while normative pressure had a significant influence on performance. We conclude by hypothesising that only through addressing the social factors can innovation achieve ‘real’ diffusion and effectiveness.

This research attempted to demonstrate that faction size affects what people are looking for when they attend to conformity stimuli. It was expected that subjects exposed to a majority look for valid informational reasons to agree with the advocated norm, subjects exposed to one influence source attempt to validate the other's judgment, and subjects exposed to a minority attempt both to validate and understand the reason for the minority's judgment. Reconstrual of the stimulus was the proposed mechanism by which majority subjects could find reasons to agree with advocated norm and minority subjects could come to understand the reason for the advocated norm. Thus, stimulus reconstrual was expected to mediate conformity and facilitate private acceptance. Faction size, norm extremity, and attention to the stimulus were manipulated; conformity, reconstrual of the stimulus, and subsequent private acceptance were measured. The stimuli consisted of trait adjectives that subjects rated for positivity during the conformity task. It was found that conformity was greater with a large faction, high attention, and high norm extremity. A main effect for attention had not been found in past research that used perceptual stimuli. It is argued that this difference in findings reflects some fundamental difference between factual judgments (e.g., perceptual stimuli) and value judgments (e.g., trait ratings). More specifically, it is argued that with factual judgments there is an objectively correct answer, whereas with value judgments "correctness" is determined by social comparison. The mplications of the presence or absence of an objectively correct response is discussed with regard to the balance between normative and informational influence mechanisms. In parallel to the effect on conformity it was also found that higher attention increased reconstrual and private acceptance. However, the Faction Size X Attention interaction, which was significant for private acceptance and marginal for reconstrual, indicated that these effects of attention were more pronounced for subjects exposed to a minority than for subjects exposed to a majority. Majority subjects showed almost the same amounts of reconstrual and private acceptance in response to both the high- and low-attention trials. Since it is assumed that subjects did not have enough time to reconstrue the stimulus before they gave their public response on the low-attention trials, this unexpected finding raises questions about the temporal ordering of conformity and reconstrual. That is does reconstrual precede and mediate conformity or succeed and justify conformity, and does the answer vary according to faction size and attention conditions. The present study could not directly answer these questions. Although no clear answer is provided to the question of whether faction size affects what subjects look for when they attend to conformity stimuli, a number of fruitful avenues for future research are discussed.

Hookah-pipe smoking escalated from being a cultural phenomenon to being a social phenomenon. Studies suggest that the hookah-pipe is a high-risk phenomenon which has become a highly acceptable social practice influenced by social factors such as smoking initiations among peers. What is unknown is whether peer pressure and social acceptance have an influence on the use of the hookah-pipe. The aim of this study is therefore to compare the relationship between peer pressure and social acceptance among adolescent hookah-pipe users and non-users. The objectives of the study are to determine the prevalence of peer pressure, social acceptability and smoking tobacco using the hookah-pipe among adolescents; establish the relationship between peer pressure and social acceptability of adolescent hookah-pipe users and non-users and to compare the relationship between peer pressure and social acceptability among adolescent hookah-pipe users and non-users. A cross-sectional comparative correlation study was conducted with a sample of Grade 9 adolescents attending secondary schools in the Metro East Education District in Cape Town. Structured questionnaires constructed from the NationalASH 10 Year Snapshot Survey, the 10-year in-depth survey, the health and lifestyle survey and peer pressure, as well as an NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development questionnaire were completed by the participants. The Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) software was used to analyse the data. The results show that no relationship was found between peer pressure and social acceptance, but a relationship was found between parental rules and monitoring around tobacco use for hookah-pipe users. A significant difference was also found in the attitudes towards hookah use between users and non-users. The ethics for this study included voluntary participation, informed consent and anonymity.

AbstractThe introduction of social protection schemes for long-term cares that is assistance with daily living activities in case of extended impairments, constitutes a comparably recent development. Taking a birds-eye perspective, this chapter explores which international interdependencies and national constellations contributed to the establishment of long-term case systems from 1945 to 2010. In particular, we investigate the relevance of channels of horizontal diffusion, that is, geographic proximity, cultural similarity, and colonial ties, the influence of the European Union as well as domestic factors such as problem pressure and women’s political empowerment.

Modeling how agents form their opinions is of paramount importance for designing marketing and electoral campaigns. In this work, we present a new framework for opinion formation which generalizes the well-known Friedkin-Johnsen model by incorporating three important features: (i) social group membership, that limits the amount of influence that people not belonging to the same group may lead on a given agent; (ii) both attraction among friends, and repulsion among enemies; (iii) different strengths of influence lead from different people on a given agent, even if the social relationships among them are the same. We show that, despite its generality, our model always admits a pure Nash equilibrium which, under opportune mild conditions, is even unique. Next, we analyze the performances of these equilibria with respect to a social objective function defined as a convex combination, parametrized by a value λ∈[0,1], of the costs yielded by the untruthfulness of the declared opinions and the total cost of social pressure. We prove bounds on both the price of anarchy and the price of stability which show that, for not-too-extreme values of λ, performance at equilibrium are very close to optimal ones. For instance, in several interesting scenarios, the prices of anarchy and stability are both equal to max{2λ,1-λ}/min{2λ,1-λ} which never exceeds 2 for λ∈[1/5,1/2].

Digital technologies became one of the most important means of communication during the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to online learning and working from home, the pressure to increase ICT competencies has increased. This paper aims to analyse the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the skills for the digital age. The research data consists of two samples. The first was collected from October 2018 to June 2019 and the second from September 2020 to January 2022, i. e. during the period of anti-pandemic restrictions. The samples are representative of the Czech population. The hypotheses about the Covid-19 pandemic interference with the sociodemographic factors of age and gender and its significant impact on using smartphones, internet banking, and the internet to find information to further education were tested. The statistical significance of hypotheses were tested using ?2 statistics and Pearson G2 statistics for two-way (C ? R) and contingency tables. The change in the use of smartphones and internet banking in the COVID-19 pandemic era was proved. Internet use for further education significantly changed only in the group of respondents in middle adulthood.

Urban pollution caused by traffic has become a global issue in recent years. Urban pollution is significantly influenced by weather conditions, and the study examines the impact of meteorological parameters such as temperature, solar radiation, precipitation, atmospheric pressure, and wind speed on the pollution levels of O3, NO, NO2, NOx, and SO2 in summer compared to winter. During summer, the average concentration of O3 is higher than in winter, while the average concentrations of NO2, NO, NOx, which are precursors to ozone formation, are lower than in winter. However, the concentration of SO2 is much higher in summer than in winter. This study indicates that pollution is more pronounced in summer with O3 and SO2. This ozone pollution is primarily due to nitrogen oxides reacting with other chemicals under the influence of solar radiation. The correlation coefficients between O3, NO2, NO, NOx concentrations and meteorological parameters have varied significantly in both seasons. High concentrations of O3 have a strong negative correlation with NO2, NO, and NOx, and a strong positive correlation with solar radiation.

Rio Tinto and the Serbian government have planned to open a lithium mine in Loznica this year. Lithium, which is key to the production of electric cars, represents a huge economic potential for the company and for Serbia, but the extraction also has significant negative environmental and social impacts. Since September 2021, Serbian environmentalists have been putting pressure on the government through mass protests, which have led to the temporary shutdown of the Jadar project. Despite this, environmentalist and increasingly antigovernment protests have continued unabated and could influence the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections.

After the financial-economic crisis of 2008 there has been an increasing diffusion of discourses by international institutions stressing the necessity towards the adoption of impact evaluation methods both by for profit and SSE organizations. This craze for impact measurement is generally led by the need of the stock exchange to find new financial markets (demand) for an increasing offer of socially or environmentally oriented financial products (such as the Social Impact Bond). This pressure had the effect to spread terms and concept typically of the financial world to other domains, such as the welfare policy (Social Investment State) and the traditional philanthropic sector (Social Return on Investment). Even the SSE has not been immune from this “epidemic” of measurement, standardization, quantification of its activities’ effects (Salathé-Beaulieu, G. in collaboration with M. J. Bouchard and M. Mendell, 2019). The paper’s main aim is to argue in favour of the adoption of a broader conceptualization of the SSE contribution to the local community (and to the society as a whole) that the one implied by the term “impact”. It proposes a conceptual framework based on the “social value” notion, which requires to consider the worth (Bouchard, M. J. ed., 2009) linked to the presence of the organization itself and not only of its activities/ programs/services. The paper will illustrate and comment the main results from an empirical research on the Social Added Value Evaluation of an umbrella recreation association in the Emilia-Romagna Region. The inquire adopts an experimental design based on qualitative methods such as: focus groups, face to face interviews and on site observations, in order to build a consensual system of social value/impact evaluation to be adopted by the local branches of the regional association.

The following technical note (TN) provides a summary of existing resources available to the US Army Corps of Engineers’ (USACE) districts that address benefits in the Other Social Effects account for evaluating the effects of water resource projects. Consideration of social factors is key to a complete, robust, water-resources analysis, and these resources provide planners and project development teams with approaches and tools for their consideration. "social effects—the constituents of life that influence personal and group definitions of satisfaction, well-being, and happiness —OSE Primer, 3" This TN is limited in scope and does not cover ecosystem goods and services or environmental-quality metrics that can also be used to assess benefits outside of economic benefits from water-resource projects. The following resources and their associated metrics are presented in a manner that is focused on assisting districts during the project-planning phase, although the metrics can be used to assess benefits or impacts during other project phases as well (for example, construction, operations, and maintenance).
