The progress of the digitalization era in democracy has led to changes in the current political contestation, especially the way candidates approach voters. This study explores broker schemes in the digital world regarding how candidates use social media to build a broker network. This study used qualitative research, by observing social media and interviewing several key informants. This study finds that in the era of digital democracy, candidates use social media to develop digital brokers, but as a pre-elaboration and intensively introduce the candidate's real work to voters. Some candidates believe that conventional brokers are still final in knowing and binding broker loyalty, but winning candidates experiment with digital brokers. On the other hand, digital democracy has provided space for candidates to focus on brokers on social media to code the brokers who will be targeted or nominated to become structured conventional brokers. This study expands the study of brokers in electoral political studies, especially insights related to digital brokerage schemes and adds focus to the study of regional elections in Indonesia. This study concludes that digital brokers are a strategy for expanding digital voter networks and persuading candidates' work to voters on social media in the long term.

Past research on language brokering has primarily focused on the positive and negative outcomes that children of immigrant families experience from brokering. Little is known, however, regarding the positive experiences that language brokees—the immigrant family members for whom children broker—garner from participating in this interaction. Utilizing survey data from 120 Latina/o mother–adolescent dyads, we examined whether more frequent participation in brokering was positively related to mothers’ (i.e., brokees) and adolescents’ (i.e., brokers) prosocial capacities. In turn, we considered whether their prosocial capacities were related to feeling less apprehensive interacting with people outside their cultural group (i.e., intercultural communication apprehension). Multigroup path analyses revealed that mothers’ and adolescents’ frequent participation in brokering was positively related to general perspective-taking and empathic concern; however, only empathic concern was negatively related to intercultural communication apprehension. Our findings reveal that brokers and brokees may experience benefits with positive implications for their intercultural interactions.

Professional development [PD] providers can shape how teachers understand and implement new policies. Yet we have a limited understanding of how providers develop the ideas they promote. We explore this by examining social capital among mathematics PD providers. Using social network and interview data, we identified providers in brokerage positions and analyze their interactions. We found that broker behavior varied by organizational setting. Brokers in school districts typically discussed logistical issues related to PD delivery, while brokers outside of districts often discussed substantive mathematical topics. When district brokers did access substantive information, they rarely shared it. We conclude that (1) the disconnect between accessing and sharing diminished district brokers’ ability to support PD in their districts and (2) the lack of substance diminished their ability to influence ideas about mathematics.

Purpose – This paper aims to investigate the contribution of brokers to business non-profit collaborations, in the context of employee volunteering. It investigates the roles brokers play and ways they contribute to value creation within social alliances. Design/methodology/approach – This research focusses on a case study of a UK employee volunteering broker programme run by a local volunteer centre. A combined qualitative methodology involved document analysis and interviews, with brokers and business, community and government partners involved in employee volunteering collaborations. Findings – Brokers play three key roles in business non-profit collaboration as connectors, facilitators/co-designers and learning catalysts. These roles help stimulate manifestations of associational value, transferred resource value, interaction value and synergistic value. Research limitations/implications – Results indicate brokers play an important part in nurturing conditions underpinning innovation and value co-creation, key characteristics of transformational forms of business non-profit collaboration. This study was based on a single case study. Future research could explore broker contributions within a variety of business non-profit settings. Practical implications – For managers implementing business non-profit collaborations, this paper provides a framework depicting key broker roles and ways brokers enable collaborative value that may be useful when assessing whether to use the services of a broker. Originality/value – This paper enriches the understanding of business non-profit collaboration and the role of individual actors in affecting value creation, an under-researched area in the social alliance literature. It provides a framework for assessing broker contributions in business non-profit collaborations.

The study of social capital has been one of the strongest areas of recent advance in migration research, but there are still many questions about how it works and why it has varying effects in studies of different places. In this article, we address the contextual variation in social capital’s effects on migration by considering migration brokers. We argue that destinations for which migration is logistically difficult to arrange give rise to brokerage industries and hypothesize that brokers, in turn, substitute for the informational capital typically provided by social networks. Our empirical tests in Nepal support this narrative, showing that social networks matter for migration to destinations where brokers are not available and have little discernible effect on migration to brokered destinations. Our results suggest that migration research should consider the growing role of brokerage agencies, that theorizations of social capital more broadly must contend with how it is delimited by brokers, and that social scientists might also consider other consequences that can arise from these migration brokers that are increasingly common in many countries and provide a marketized replacement for social capital in some cases.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to re-visit social construction of technology (SCOT) framework in understanding of innovation in the construction sector and unpack the role of innovation brokers in this context. Design/methodology/approach This is a conceptual paper adopting SCOT framework to understand innovation in the context of the construction sector. The role of innovation brokers is unpacked in the paper, currently under-explored in the construction innovation studies. Findings The authors suggest SCOT framework as a useful overarching frame through which to understand construction innovation. The authors argue that innovation brokers should be positioned to oversee the interface of multiple social groups. Research limitations/implications Further empirical research is proposed to test the theoretical assumptions outlined in the paper. The research agenda is to conduct further empirical research adopting a socio-technical theoretical lens and appropriate qualitative or mixed-design methodologies. There are other socio-technical theoretical frameworks that could be used to explore socio-technical interactions in different ways, e.g. socio-technical systems theory, sociomateriality, actor-network theory, etc. Practical implications Three propositions are developed regarding the position of an innovation broker from the perspectives of multi-social-groups interfaces, shifting significance of the roles of innovation broker and the collaboration with government. Originality/value The authors outline the value of SCOT framework for innovation study within project-based construction sector. The authors contribute to better understanding of the role of innovation brokers in the system of construction innovation.

SummaryPoor connectivity between diverse resource users and complex wider governance networks is a challenge in environmental governance. Organizations that ‘broker’ interactions among these relationships are expected to improve governance outcomes. Here, we used semi-structured interviews and social network analysis to identify actors in positions to broker coral reef-related information to and from resource users and to assess the performance of these brokers. Representatives (n = 262) of actor groups were interviewed, including local and national government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community organizations and resource user groups from 12 communities across four Caribbean countries, to map information-sharing networks and to identify brokers. Broker performance was assessed through separate interviews with coral reef resource users (n = 545). The findings show that marine NGOs were the highest-functioning brokers. Where such local-level organizations were absent, government agencies in reef management roles acted as brokers, but their performance was lower. Actors in brokerage positions did not always effectively share information, with broker performance being positively correlated with network brokerage scores. The results further our understanding of the roles of brokers in different governance contexts. Identifying those in brokerage positions and supporting their roles in connecting local resource users to wider governance networks could encourage functional brokerage and enhance reef management outcomes.

Open network structures and brokerage positions have long been seen as playing a crucial role in sustaining social capital and competitive advantage. The degree to which individuals intermediate between otherwise disconnected others can differ across online and offline social networks. For example, users may broker online between two others who then exchange offline the information received through social media. Yet network studies of social capital have often neglected the interplay between online and offline interactions, and have concentrated primarily on a single layer. Here, we propose a geo-social multilayer approach to brokerage that casts light on the integrated online and offline foundations of social capital. Drawing on a data set of 37,722 Foursquare users in London, we extend the notion of brokerage by examining users’ positions in an online social network and their offline mobility patterns through checkins. We find that social and geographic brokerage positions are distinct and asymmetric across the social and co-location networks. On the one hand, users may appear to be brokers online when in fact their ability to intermediate would be mitigated if their offline positions were also taken into account. On the other, users who appear to have little brokerage power offline may be active brokers within networks that combine both online and offline interactions.

Activists contesting urban neoliberalism are traveling to participate in struggles beyond their place of residence. They are sharing, teaching and advising activists from other struggles. They are also promoters of specific imaginaries and strategies of contestation. I refer to this phenomenon as translocal urban activism, a type of brokerage that aims to draw global connections among local political movements and a global activist network. By the analysis of the translocal practices against gentrification of the Spanish art collective Left Hand Rotation in Latin America, I direct the discussion to identify the mechanisms whereby translocal urban activism shapes the geography of urban movements against gentrification, and to examine how translocal urban activism contributes to the reproduction of and resistance against neoliberal ideas, values, and practices. I argue that power geometries within translocal urban activists, tend to nurture the global activist network with dominant imaginaries and practices, eclipsing other alternatives.

The children of immigrants are often entrusted with the task of interpreting linguistic and cultural information between their native communities and their Anglo American communities, a process called language brokering. Much of the research indicates that the responsibilities of the task positively affect the social and cognitive development of brokers. The present quantitative study examined the social and academic self-efficacy of brokers as they relate to brokering frequency, the ways in which single and dual parent structures affect the bond between the broker and the parent(s), and the ways in which the parent-child bond affects the social and academic self-efficacy of the brokers. There were slight correlation in the results but not a lot of significance.

Since the 1986 People Power Revolution, the Philippine civil society groups, particularly the NGOs, had been considered as one of the most active in the world in terms of promoting democratization. Although it has only been recognized recently, the Philippine civil society has been in existence as early as the 16th century. Moreover, it is not only comprised of the middle class-based NGOs, but also the people's organizations whose roles in the democratization process were crucial, yet underplayed. Of late, however, the NGOs are more recognized as representatives of the Philippine civil society because of the critical roles they play as development intermediaries. As such, they broker influence and resources between the organized grassroots and the formal social institutions such as the state, the Catholic Church and the ideological parties. Because of this, they allowed some fractions of the Filipino middle class to get mainstreamed in the field of development administration and enabled them to strategically position themselves to countervail the influence of the elites on the state. This paper examines how the Philippine social development NGOs emerged and over time, evolved into development intermediaries. It identifies the development within the Catholic Church, the changes in the ideological parties, the socioeconomic situations at particular historical junctures and the responses of the state towards organized efforts of the citizenry as major factors that shaped the Philippine civil society's transformation. It likewise described how such macro-processes compelled a particular NGO, the Institute of Social Order, to undertake professionalization and transform itself into a development intermediary organization over time.

Taking the theme of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), this study was developed in the Brazilian segment of the insurance brokerage that represents significant role in the economy. In the theoretical framework, the Ethos Indicators (ETHOS, 2007) are used as a parameter. Similarly, field research was conducted in four insurance brokers listed in the Ethos Institute of Business and Social Responsibility, based in 2007. The objective of this research is to investigate the stage of development of indicators related to the themes Values, Transparency and Governance and Internal Public, which are part of the list of seven topics of the questionnaire of the Ethos Institute. The cut made reflects the relevance of these themes and their subthemes for the field in focus. This is a descriptive-exploratory research, conducted through a survey. As for the results, it appears that although there is some concern to deepen the practice of CSR, they are, in general, still in early stages, requiring, therefore, a commitment of companies towards more effective actions. Of the two issues addressed, there is concentration of actions in the Internal Public, through conduct targeted in relations with officials, as seen in indicators related to the subtheme decent work. Despite the complexity of the activity and the ethical underpinning to it, because it relies on a relationship of trust, the insurance brokers show reluctance in terms of socially responsible practices, which indicates a lack of awareness of the importance of this theme in their field of expertise. Because of the broad horizon that represents the subject in the dynamic economy, future studies may contribute to the further deepening of the subject in the activity of insurance brokerage, encouraging other companies to join the CSR movement, enabling a new social reality to arise in the segment.

The thesis focuses on the actions undertaken by individuals to activate the organisational structures in which they are embedded. The present study upholds the need to investigate individual’s behaviours within organisations for a deeper understanding of organisational processes micro-foundations. The dissertation blends social network analysis and case study methods, with a private incubator and its 10 start-ups as a research setting. RFID (Radio-Frequency IDentification) badges were used to capture the ways through which employees mobilise the resources at their disposal within the organisation. The use of RFID technology has enabled the monitoring, with high-resolution, of the effort in terms of face-to-face interaction undertaken by a 91-subject network. Essay I deals with individual ambidexterity showing the presence of 3 individual ambidexterity orientations and their possible combinations at the organisational level. Essay II focuses on the relational styles used by brokers (compared to non-brokers) to activate workplace social networks, both instrumental and affective ones. Findings show that brokers differently engage with their informal workplace social networks depending on the content of the relationship (instrumental vs. affective) in which s/he is embedded. Finally, Essay III analyses the use of “fleeting” face-to-face interactions among employees and the determinants of this communication behaviour, important in activating organisational resources. Results suggest that social, organisational and spatial determinants impact on the frequency of this kind of interactions. More specifically, the presence of organisational similarity seems to play a key role in activating short encounters among colleagues linked by social similarity as well as by the sharing of a working space with specific characteristics of proximity and visibility.

The following work was developed in the concentration area of “History, Culture and Power” in the research line “Integration, Politics and Frontier” of the masters course of the Post Graduated Program in History from the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), with support from CAPES scholarship. The goal is to enquire about forms of power’s social construction and apropriation of resources from the elites in an open frontier region in the end of the XVIII century and in the begin of XIX centuty. The study was elaborated from the trajectory analysis of a potentate located in Rio Grande de São Pedro, José de Abreu - Barão do Serro Largo. In this sense, we had thought about his role as a mediator, that adjusted to the local reality, was able to establish relations with the large and multi-ethnic population that inhabited the frontier, being one of the links connecting the region to the Portuguese administrative network. It was possible to perceive, therefore, that Abreu's social ascencion had been allowed by the opening of the frontier after the conquest of the Missions in 1801. The conquered territory opened spaces for the insertion of new elites, who took field’s possession and organized spaces of command in new frontier. Abreu constructed his military store from a series of factors, among which stood out the alliance with the indigenous local population (guaranis from the Missions and groups of charruas). Besides to the relationship with the groups of military and militiamen officers who went to that region, receiving land that was distributed by José de Abreu, in exchange, mainly, by the military services. It was also possible to verify, in the same way, that these groups were very integrated. Abreu also managed to establish close ties to the Court, which made possible his appointment to the position of Governor of Arms, and his projection to a command space within the province.

Brokerage is one of the most popular and well-studied concepts in the literature on social networks. It has so far been analysed, however, without taking negative ties in so-called signed networks into account. The central role of tension for brokerage motivates an integration with the hitherto not explicitly related social balance theory. Despite brokers benefitting from serving as intermediaries, in many networks, gaps remain open. We hypothesise that these gaps in some contexts are filled with conflictual relationships. Implementing balance theory, we argue that brokers face higher imbalance as they positively connect adversarial groups. This would create a trade-off between brokerage benefits and stress from unbalanced relationships. We additionally propose a novel theory on unbalanced four-cycles in which a strong desire for balance prohibits the evolution of positive ties between groups and stabilises brokerage. To answer the research questions, we used cross-sectional data from eight Hungarian work departments of sizes 16 to 43 on the relationships between colleagues. We applied descriptive statistics, non-parametric tests and linear regressions to test the hypotheses regarding the connection between brokerage and balance and their relevance for different benefits. Creating null models of the observed networks, we tested the prevalence of the specific four-cycles against the predicted number by random chance and correlated it with brokerage scores. As the last step, we created agent-based models simulating organisations with 25 agents to predict the impact of balance and brokerage mechanisms on the network evolution in connection with negative ties. Results show that brokers tend to have a higher share of negative ties in their neighbourhood but no higher imbalance. Despite heterogeneity in the networks and low statistical power, some support for the importance of balance for a broker concerning job satisfaction is found. For half of the networks, a significantly higher number of unbalanced four-cycles is observed which are predominantly connected to brokers. The simulation results show that more negative ties hamper average balance but do not foster brokerage properties. A higher motivation to obtain balance limits brokerage and vice versa. Overall, to create similar networks to the ones observed, a considerably high preference for balance must be integrated. In sum, more conflict in a network does not directly increase brokerage opportunities. Brokerage and balance both benefit actors and are not to be seen as contrary but complementary concepts. Thus, in workplaces, conflict does not need to be harmful if room exists to form balanced relationships. Central is the constellation of positive and negativeties that require the consideration of network structures at different levels.

“Why do immigrants and refugees need community health workers/lay health workers (CHWs) if Canada already has a universal health care system?” Abundant evidence demonstrates that despite the universality of our health care system marginalized populations, including immigrants and refugees, experience barriers to accessing the health system. Evidence on the role of CHWs facilitating access is both lacking and urgently needed. This dissertation contributes to this evidence by providing a thick description and thorough analytical exploration of a CHW model, in Edmonton, Canada. Specifically, I examine the activities of the Multicultural Health Brokers Co-operative (MCHB Co-op) and its Multicultural Health Brokers from 1992 to 2011 as well as the relationship they have with Alberta Health Services (AHS) Edmonton Zone Public Health. The research for this study is based on an instrumental and embedded qualitative case study design. The case is the MCHB Co-op, an independently-run multicultural health worker co-operative, which contracts with health and social services providers in Edmonton to offer linguistically- and culturally-appropriate services to marginalized immigrant and refugee women and their families. The two embedded mini-cases are two programs of the MCHB Co-op: Perinatal Outreach and Health for Two, which are the raison d’être for a sustained partnership between the MCHB Co-op and AHS. The phenomenon under study is the Multicultural Health Brokers’ practice. I triangulate multiple methods (research strategies and data sources), including 46 days of participant and direct observation, 44 in-depth interviews (with Multicultural Health Brokers, mentors, women using the programs, health professionals and outsiders who knew of the work of the MCHB Co-op and Multicultural Health Brokers), and document review and analysis of policy documents, yearly reports, training manuals, educational materials as well as quantitative analysis of the Health Brokers’ 3,442 client caseload database. In addition, data include my field notes of both descriptive and analytical reflections taken throughout the onsite research. I also triangulate various theoretical frameworks to explore how historically specific social structures, economic relationships, and ideological assumptions serve to create and reinforce the conditions that give rise to the need for CHWs, and the factors that aid or hinder their ability to facilitate marginalized populations’ access to health and social services. Findings reveal that Multicultural Health Brokers facilitate access to health and social services as well as foster community capacity building in order to address settlement, adaptation, and integration of immigrant and refugee women and their families into Canadian society. Findings also demonstrate that the Multicultural Health Broker model is an example of collaboration between community-based organizations and local systems in targeting health equity for marginalized populations; in particular, in perinatal health and violence against women. A major problem these workers face is they provide important services as part of Canada’s health human resources workforce, but their contributions are often not recognized as such. The triangulation of methods and theory provides empirical and theoretical understanding of the Multicultural Health Brokers’ contribution to immigrant and refugee women and their families’ feminist urban citizenship.

Th anks to today’s digital age, insurance is the one industry that has particularly benefi ted from the advancements in technology. Every customer an insurance broker or agent serves has a diff erent communication want or need. Some customers crave Улога савремене технологије у општењу посредника и заступника са осигураницима 34 personal attention and want to be able to speak with their insurance agents or brokers. Others simply want easy access to information and a way to deliver information that is not stressful or disruptive. For that reason, insurance brokers or agents should use modern technology to off er multiple communication channels. Th is can include websites, mobile devices, social media, remote communication and business process automation as it is pointed out in this article. More people are accessing the Internet on mobile devices than on desktop computers. Insurance agents and brokers should make sure their websites are compatible with most (if not all) mobile devices. Another solution is to create a mobile app to make it easy for consumers to access their sites on the go. Social media for insurance agents and brokers has challenges. However, social media is now critical to the insurance business. Th e rewards they can reap on social media far outweigh the obstacles. Insurance sales and consultations have always been about connection. Brokers and agents make a connection with clients. Th ey discuss catastrophic situations, potential life problems and issues of daily living, making connections in real life. Th e world now requires those connections to be maintained online, especially during the coronavirus crisis. Remote communication is a way of communicating with others online. Meetings, information, and training materials are shared over the Internet. Advanced insurance brokers and agents create virtual teams. Th ey icommunicate and collaborate online and not in a shared offi ce space. Business process automation is the technology-enabled automation of complex business i.e. insurance processes utilized by agents and brokers. It can streamline an insurance business for simplicity, achieve digital transformation, increase service quality to the insureds, improve service delivery or contain costs. Insurance brokers and agents should spend more time interacting with potential customers. Th is includes answering questions and informing them of the important benefi ts of the insurance off ered. Th ey should turn to in-offi ce soft ware that helps them automate these workfl ows.

Food waste is generally seen as highly unethical. Recycling food waste requires establishing information-sharing channels in the food supply chain. However, the lack of relationship between suppliers and potential demanders hinders the delivery of waste products, conceptualized as "structural holes" in social network research. The food recovery digital platform in the food supply chain acts as a market intermediary to bridge the communication at the two ends of the structural holes, fulfilling the function of "brokers", which has been proven in the transaction cost theory to reduce the transaction costs and improve the performance of the supply chain. However, related research on digital platforms and supply chains ignores this new type of brokerage. This research combines network research, transaction cost research, and supply chain research and explores the role of food recovery platforms in food waste problems in the food supply chain.

To date, the Government of Cambodia has issued at least 2,216 policies in response to Covid-19. These have largely been directed at limiting the spread of the Covid-19 within Cambodia, with clear attempts to mitigate the burden on economically- and socially-vulnerable groups. This study explored the ways in which the policy response to Covid-19 has been experienced by vulnerable migrant workers and people vulnerable to trafficking in persons. We interviewed seven social workers and independent experts, four migrant workers, and nine survivors of trafficking in order to gather evidence about gaps in the policies’ abilities to protect people and to identify mechanisms by which they impacted vulnerability. We find that, while the policies have attempted to provide protection to vulnerable groups, the majority of our respondents were not able to access it effectively. Workers in informal sectors have been particularly impacted by work stoppages since they have less bargaining power with employers and are much less able to access government unemployment support. Migrant workers trapped abroad faced hardships and discrimination, with many making risky journeys back to Cambodia or losing their regular migrant status. Border closure policies meant that many people were not able to safely return to Cambodia or travel for their livelihoods. This resulted in an increased reliance on brokers to cross borders illegally and to attempt to find work, which in turn increased risks of exploitation and trafficking at the very time when officials and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were least able to monitor and identify violations.

In village economies, small firm owners facing idiosyncratic shocks adjust production by cutting spending and reducing employment. Households with whom they trade inputs and labor scale back their own businesses and reduce consumption. As effects reverberate through local economies, the aggregate indirect adverse effects are larger than the direct effects. Propagation is more severe when transmitted through labor networks as opposed to material supply-chain networks, and goes beyond input-output/sectoral considerations as it varies with network position, closeness to a shocked household, and network density. Participation in gift-giving insurance networks mitigates direct and hence indirect effects. Supply chain and labor networks are fragile as the broken links are not easily replaced, leading to persistent damage. Social gains from better-targeted safety nets are substantially higher than private gains.

Even before the corona pandemic broke out in 2020, the role of digitalisation became more and more apparent within Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) processes. Since the pandemic, intermediary organisations that bridge the distance between academia and the world of business to pave the way for successful university-industry linkages have not primarily been able to build on face-to-face-encounters to create those relations. Based on an ongoing research project, this paper examines how digitally mediated communications potentially enhance or limit knowledge and technology transfer that is primarily based on face-to-face interactions. On the one hand, the use of digitally mediated communications seem to foster the spatial expansion of networks, save travel times and costs and foster a special form of social inclusion. University-industry-relations, on the other hand, still rely on a positive evaluation of face-to-face contacts and geographical proximity for trust to develop between heterogeneous partners. Here, actors with bridging functions like transfer scouts are vital in enabling a regular communicative exchange to create commitment, social cohesion and cooperation in digital contexts. Although the relevance of digitalised transfer processes has been increasing over time, an important set of activities, involving face-to-face contacts and co-location, currently still plays a major role for transfer intermediaries in university-industry-relations.
