Indonesia has a high biodiversity of snakes. Snake species that exist throughout Indonesia, consisting of venomous and non-venomous snakes. One of the dangers that can be posed by snakes is the bite of several types of deadly snakes. Snake bite cases recorded in Indonesia are quite high with not a few fatalities. Most of the deaths caused by snakebite occur due to errors in the handling procedure for the bite wound. This problem can be overcome one of them if we know how to classify snake bite wounds, whether venomous or non-venomous. In this study, a classification system for snake bite wound image was built using Regionprops feature extraction and Decision Tree algorithm. Snake bite images are classified as either venomous or non-venomous without knowing the kind of the snake. In Regionprops several features are used to help the process of feature extraction, including the number of centroids, area, distance, and eccentricity. Evaluation of the model that was built was found that the parameters of the number of centroids and the distance between centroids had the most significant influence in helping the classification of images of snakebite wounds with an accuracy of 97.14%, precision 92.85%, recall 91.42%, and F1 score 92.06%.

The paper presents the results of a complex study of the collection of zoomorphic figurines from the Upper Palaeolithic site of Malta in the Angara region of Eastern Siberia. The materials described and analyzed in the paper were obtained during the excavations by M. M. Gerasimov in 1928—1958 and are currently divided between four museums in Saint Petersburg, Moscow and Irkutsk. Based on morphometric, stylistic, technological and use wear analyses in combination with zoological, archaeozoological and ethnographic evidence, the authors propose new classification and interpretation of the zoomorphic figurines they studied. The Malta zoomorphic sculpture is notable for its realism, attention to details and sophisticated techniques of manufacture and decoration. The proposed classification forms the basis of the information system “Art of Malta culture”.

Introduction India has remarkably the highest number of snakebite cases contributing to nearly 50% of the global snakebite deaths. Despite this fact, there is limited knowledge and awareness regarding the management practices for snakebite in the Indian population. The study aimed to explore the knowledge, awareness, and perception of snakes and snakebites, first aid, and treatment amongst the community and the frontline health workers in a tribal block of Dahanu, Maharashtra, India. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out from June 2016 to October 2018 in the Dahanu Block, Maharashtra. Perceptions, knowledge, awareness, and first-aid practices on the snakebites among the community were studied through focus group discussions (FGDs). Semi-structured questionnaires were used to assess the knowledge, awareness, and experience of the traditional faith healers, snake rescuers, frontline health workers on the snakebites and their management. A facility check survey was conducted using pre-tested questionnaires for different levels of the government health care facilities. Results Most of the tribal community was aware of the commonly found snakes and their hiding places. However, there was inadequate knowledge on the identification and classification of venomous snakes. Belief in a snake god, the perception that snakes will not come out during thunderstorms, change in taste sensation, the ability of tamarind seeds or magnet to reduce the venom effect were some of the superstitions reported by the tribal community. The application of a harmful method (Tourniquet) as the first aid for snakebite was practiced by the tribal community. They preferred herbal medicines and visiting the traditional faith healers before shifting the patient to the government health facility. The knowledge on the ability to identify venomous snakebites and anti-venom was significantly higher amongst nurses and accredited social health activists (ASHAs) than auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) and multi-purpose workers (MPWs) (p < 0.05). None of the traditional faith healers; but nearly 60% of snake rescuers were aware of anti-venom. Fifty percent of the medical officers in Dahanu block did not have correct knowledge about the Krait bite symptoms, and renal complications due to the Russell viper bite. Conclusions Inappropriate perception, inadequate awareness, and knowledge about snakes and snakebites may predispose the tribal community to increased risks of venomous snakebites. Unproven and harmful methods for snakebite treatment practiced by the community and traditional faith healers could be dangerous leading to high mortality. Therefore, a multi-sectoral approach of community awareness, mapping of vulnerable populations, capacity building of health care facility, empowerment of health care workers (HCWs) could be useful for reducing the mortality and morbidity due to snakebite envenoming in India.

Real-time identification of wildlife is an upcoming and promising tool for the preservation of wildlife. In this research project, we aimed to use object detection and image classification for the racer snakes of the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. The final target of this project was to build an artificial intelligence (AI) platform, in terms of a web or mobile application, which would serve as a real-time decision making and supporting mechanism for the visitors and park rangers of the Galápagos Islands, to correctly identify a snake species from the user’s uploaded image. Using the deep learning and machine learning algorithms and libraries, we modified and successfully implemented four region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) architectures (models for image classification): Inception V2, ResNet, MobileNet, and VGG16. Inception V2, ResNet and VGG16 reached an overall accuracy of 75%.

For most of the last 150 years, Tricheilostoma Jan, 1860 has resided in the synonymy of other snake genera such as Glauconia Gray, 1845 and Leptotyphlops Fitzinger, 1843 (Boulenger, 1893; McDiarmid et al., 1999). Thus there has been less practical concern over the identity of the type species. This changed recently with the proposal of a new classification of the family Leptotyphlopidae and resurrection of the Genus Tricheilostoma (Adalsteinsson et al., 2009). Pinto et al. (2010) alluded to a potential taxonomic problem with the type species of that genus, but determined that no change was necessary. However, the problem remains and affects 15 species of South American and African snakes. The purpose of this note is to resolve the issue and make the necessary taxonomic changes.

Most West Indian snakes of the family Dipsadidae belong to the Subfamily Xenodontinae and Tribe Alsophiini. As recognized here, alsophiine snakes are exclusively West Indian and comprise 43 species distributed throughout the region. These snakes are slender and typically fast-moving (active foraging), diurnal species often called racers. For the last four decades, their classification into six genera was based on a study utilizing hemipenial and external morphology and which concluded that their biogeographic history involved multiple colonizations from the mainland. Although subsequent studies have mostly disagreed with that phylogeny and taxonomy, no major changes in the classification have been proposed until now. Here we present a DNA sequence analysis of five mitochondrial genes and one nuclear gene in 35 species and subspecies of alsophiines. Our results are more consistent with geography than previous classifications based on morphology, and support a reclassification of the species of alsophiines into seven named and three new genera: Alsophis Fitzinger (Lesser Antilles), Arrhyton Günther (Cuba), Borikenophis Hedges & Vidal gen. nov. (Puerto Rican Bank and nearby islands), Caraiba Zaher et al. (Cuba), Cubophis Hedges & Vidal gen. nov. (primarily Cuba but extending throughout the western Caribbean and Bahamas Bank), Haitiophis Hedges & Vidal gen. nov. (Hispaniola), Hypsirhynchus Günther (Hispaniola and Jamaica), Ialtris Cope (Hispaniola), Magliophis Zaher et al. (Puerto Rican Bank), and Uromacer Duméril & Bibron (Hispaniola). Several subspecies are recognized as full species. Three subtribes are recognized within the tribe Alsophiini Fitzinger: Alsophiina Fitzinger (for Alsophis, Borikenophis, Caraiba, Cubophis, Haitiophis, Hypsirhynchus, Ialtris, and Magliophis), Arrhytonina Hedges & Vidal subtribus nov. (for Arrhyton), and Uromacerina Hedges & Vidal subtribus nov. (for Uromacer). Divergence time estimates based on the molecular data indicate a relatively recent (~17–13 million years ago, Ma) origin for alsophiines. A single species apparently dispersed from South America, probably colonizing Hispaniola or Cuba and then later (13–0 Ma) there was dispersal to other islands and subsequent adaptive radiation, mostly in the Pliocene (5.3–1.8 Ma) and Pleistocene (1.8–0.01 Ma). More evidence will be needed to resolve all relationships among the genera and species groups and further details of their biogeographic history.

Active contour models, colloquially known as snakes, are quite popular for several applications such as object boundary detection, image segmentation, object tracking, and classification via energy minimization. While energy minimization may be accomplished using traditional optimization methods, approaches based on nature-inspired evolutionary algorithms have been developed in recent years. One such evolutionary algorithm that has been used extensively in active contours is the particle swarm optimization (PSO). However, conventional PSO converges slowly and gets trapped in local minimum easily which results in inaccurate detection of concavities in the object boundary. This is taken care of by using proposed multiswarm PSO in which a swarm is set for every control point in the snake and then all the swarms search for their best points simultaneously through information sharing among them. The performance of the multiswarm PSO-based search process is further enhanced by using dynamic adaptation of the inertia factor. In this paper, we propose using a set of fuzzy rules to adjust the inertia weight on the basis of the current normalized snake energy and the current value of inertia. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method compared to conventional approaches.

BACKGROUND:The extant squamates (>9400 known species of lizards and snakes) are one of the most diverse and conspicuous radiations of terrestrial vertebrates, but no studies have attempted to reconstruct a phylogeny for the group with large-scale taxon sampling. Such an estimate is invaluable for comparative evolutionary studies, and to address their classification. Here, we present the first large-scale phylogenetic estimate for Squamata.RESULTS:The estimated phylogeny contains 4161 species, representing all currently recognized families and subfamilies. The analysis is based on up to 12896 base pairs of sequence data per species (average = 2497 bp) from 12 genes, including seven nuclear loci (BDNF, c-mos, NT3, PDC, R35, RAG-1, and RAG-2), and five mitochondrial genes (12S, 16S, cytochrome b, ND2, and ND4). The tree provides important confirmation for recent estimates of higher-level squamate phylogeny based on molecular data (but with more limited taxon sampling), estimates that are very different from previous morphology-based hypotheses. The tree also includes many relationships that differ from previous molecular estimates and many that differ from traditional taxonomy.CONCLUSIONS:We present a new large-scale phylogeny of squamate reptiles that should be a valuable resource for future comparative studies. We also present a revised classification of squamates at the family and subfamily level to bring the taxonomy more in line with the new phylogenetic hypothesis. This classification includes new, resurrected, and modified subfamilies within gymnophthalmid and scincid lizards, and boid, colubrid, and lamprophiid snakes.

Active contours have been proven to be a powerful semiautomatic image segmentation approach, that seems to cope with many applications and different image modalities. However, they exhibit inherent drawbacks, including the sensibility to contour initialization due to the limited capture range of image edges and problems with concave boundary regions. The Gradient Vector Flow replaces the traditional image force and provides an enlarged capture range as well as enhanced concavity extraction capabilities, but it involves an expensive computational effort and considerably increased memory requirements at the time of computation. In this paper, we present an enhancement of the active contour model to facilitate semiautomatic contour detection in huge images. We propose a tile-based image decomposition accompanying an image force computation scheme on demand in order to minimize both computational and memory requirements. We show an efficient implementation of this approach on the basis of general purpose GPU processing providing for continuous active contour deformation without a considerable delay.

Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit Algorithmen aus dem Bereich der Bildsegmentierung sowie der Datensynthese für das so genannte Hologrammdruck-Prinzip. Angelehnt an ein anatomisch motiviertes Forschungsprojekt werden aktive Konturen zur halbautomatischen Segmentierung digitalisierter histologischer Schnitte herangezogen. Die besondere Herausforderung liegt dabei in der Entwicklung von verschiedenen Ansätzen, die der Anpassung des Verfahrens für sehr große Bilder dienen, welche in diesem Kontext eine Größe von einigen hundert Megapixel erreichen können. Unter dem Aspekt der größtmöglichen Effizienz, jedoch mit der Beschränkung auf die Verwendung von Consumer-Hardware, werden Ideen vorgestellt, welche eine auf aktiven Konturen basierende Segmentierung bei derartigen Bildgrößen erstmals ermöglichen sowie zur Beschleunigung und Reduktion des Speicheraufwandes beitragen. Darüber hinaus wurde das Verfahren um ein intuitives Werkzeug erweitert, das eine interaktive lokale Korrektur der finalen Kontur gestattet und damit die Praxistauglichkeit der Methode maßgeblich erhöht. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit einem Druckprinzip für die Herstellung von Hologrammen, basierend auf virtuellen Abbildungsgegenständen. Der Hologrammdruck, der namentlich an die Arbeitsweise eines Tintenstrahldruckers erinnern soll, benötigt dazu spezielle diskrete Bilddaten, die als Elementarhologramme bezeichnet werden. Diese tragen die visuelle Information verschiedener Blickrichtungen durch einen festen geometrischen Ort auf der Hologrammebene. Ein vollständiges, aus vielen Elementarhologrammen zusammengesetztes Hologramm erzeugt dabei ein erhebliches Datenvolumen, das parameterabhängig schnell im Terabyte-Bereich liegen kann. Zwei unabhängige Algorithmen zur Erzeugung geeignet aufbereiteter Daten unter intensiver Ausnutzung von Standard-Graphikhardware werden präsentiert, hinsichtlich ihrer Berechnungs- sowie Speicherkomplexität verglichen und unter Berücksichtigung von Qualitätsaspekten bewertet.

Creating software to allow computers to do the same is much more challenging. This thesis will use digital signal processing and machine learning techniques to differentiate snare drum timbres produced by different stroke positions and stroke techniques.

Understanding irrigator responses to previous changes in water availability is critical to building effective institutions that allow for efficient and resilient management of water resources in the face of potentially increasing scarcity due to climate change. Using remote sensing data, I examined irrigator responses to seasonal changes in water availability in Idaho's Snake River Plain over the past 33 years. Google Earth Engine's high performance cloud computing and big data processing capabilities were used to compare the performance of three spectral indices, three compositing algorithms and two sensors for 2002 and 2007 for distinguishing between irrigated and non-irrigated parcels. We demonstrate that, on average, the seasonal-maximum algorithm yields a 60% reduction in county scale root mean square error (RMSE) over the accepted single-date approach. We use the best performing classification method, a binary threshold of the seasonal maximum of the Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI), to identify irrigated and non-irrigated lands in Idaho's Snake River Basin for 1984-2016 using Landsat 5-8 data. NDMI of irrigated lands was found to generally increase over time, likely as a result of changes in agricultural practices increasing crop productivity. Furthermore, we find that irrigators with rights to small areas, and those with only surface water rights are more likely to have a major reduction (>25%) in irrigated area and conversely those with a large, groundwater rights are more likely to have major increases (>25%) in the extent of their irrigation.

Two discreet methods of geometric morphometrics were applied to evaluate the taxonomic utility of each in classifying the craniomandibular region of several Mustela species. Use of both linear measurements and 2-dimensional landmarks proved successful in discriminating between extant M. nigripes (black-footed ferret) and Neovison vison (American mink), in addition to the extant North American weasel species (M. erminea, M. frenata, M. nivalis). Methods were then used to classify Late Pleistocene Mustela spp. fossils collected from Snake Creek Burial Cave (SCBC) of eastern Nevada. Data acquired for unknown predicted group memberships varied markedly among methods and specimens. Nevertheless, results support the presence of M. nigripes and all 3 weasel taxa among the SCBC paleofauna.

Le développement de méthodes de la détection en temps réel de cellules anormales (pouvant être considérées comme des cellules cancéreuses) par captures et traitements bio-images sont des axes de recherche importants dans le domaine biomédical car cela contribue à diagnostiquer un cancer. C’est dans ce contexte que se situe ces travaux de thèse. Plus précisément, les travaux présentés dans ce manuscrit, se focalise sur le développement de procédures de lecture, de détection et de classification automatiques de bio-images de cellules anormales considérées comme des cellules cancéreuses. Par conséquent, une première étape du travail à consister à déterminer une solution de détection, à partir d’images microscopiques multispectrales permettant une répétitivité d’images sur une gamme de longueurs d'ondes de certains types de bio-images anormales associées à différents stades ou évolutions de cellules cancéreuses. L’approche développée dans ces travaux repose sur l’exploitation d’une nouvelle méthode de segmentation basée sur l'intensité de la couleur et pouvant être appliquée sur des séquences d'objets dans une image en reformant de manière adaptative et itérative la localisation et la couverture de contours réels de cellules. Cette étape préalable de segmentation est primordiale et permet une classification des tissus anormaux en utilisant la méthode de réseau de neurones à convolution (CNN) appliqué sur les images microscopiques segmenté de type snake. L’approche permet d’obtenir de bas résultats comparativement à une approche basée sur d’autres méthodes de segmentation de la littérature. En effet, cette méthode de classification atteint des valeurs de performance de 100% pour la phase d’apprentissage et de 99.168 % pour les phases de test. Cette méthode est comparée à différents travaux antérieurs et basée sur différentes fonctionnalités d'extraction, et a prouvé son efficacité par rapport à ces autres méthodes. En terme de perspectives, les travaux futurs visent à valider notre approche sur des ensembles de données plus larges, et à explorer différentes architectures CNN selon différents critères d’optimisation
Development of methods for help diagnosis of the real time detection of abnormal cells (which can be considered as cancer cells) through bio-image processing and detection are most important research directions in information science and technology. Our work has been concerned by developing automatic reading procedures of the normal and abnormal bio-images tissues. Therefore, the first step of our work is to detect a certain type of abnormal bio-images associated to many types evolution of cancer within a Microscopic multispectral image, which is an image, repeated in many wavelengths. And using a new segmentation method that reforms itself in an iterative adaptive way to localize and cover the real cell contour, using some segmentation techniques. It is based on color intensity and can be applied on sequences of objects in the image. This work presents a classification of the abnormal tissues using the Convolution neural network (CNN), where it was applied on the microscopic images segmented using the snake method, which gives a high performance result with respect to the other segmentation methods. This classification method reaches high performance values, where it reaches 100% for training and 99.168% for testing. This method was compared to different papers that uses different feature extraction, and proved its high performance with respect to other methods. As a future work, we will aim to validate our approach on a larger datasets, and to explore different CNN architectures and the optimization of the hyper-parameters, in order to increase its performance, and it will be applied to relevant medical imaging tasks including computer-aided diagnosis

A study of the Helminthoglyptidae of Sonora was undertaken to determine the extent of their distribution and speciation. As a result, nine new species of Sonorella are described, and new ranges of the known species are given. The status of the family is reviewed and its standing is supported with the analysis of morphological characteristics of several genera. The zoogeography of the family and its distribution are shown. Possible dispersal and isolation mechanisms are discussed in order to explain the present distribution of these snails, and comments on ecological and speciation accounts are offered.

This diploma thesis describes how to create or convert traditional Java programs to desktop-like rich internet applications with the Google Web Toolkit. The Google Web Toolkit is an open source development environment, which translates Java code to browser and device independent HTML and JavaScript. Most of the GWT framework parts, including the Java to JavaScript compiler as well as important security issues of websites will be introduced. The famous Agricola board game will be implemented in the Model-View-Presenter pattern to show that complex user interfaces can be created with the Google Web Toolkit. The Google Web Toolkit framework will be compared with the JavaServer Faces one to find out which toolkit is the right one for the next web project
Diese Diplomarbeit beschreibt die Erzeugung desktopähnlicher Anwendungen mit dem Google Web Toolkit und die Umwandlung klassischer Java-Programme in diese. Das Google Web Toolkit ist eine Open-Source-Entwicklungsumgebung, die Java-Code in browserunabhängiges als auch in geräteübergreifendes HTML und JavaScript übersetzt. Vorgestellt wird der Großteil des GWT Frameworks inklusive des Java zu JavaScript-Compilers sowie wichtige Sicherheitsaspekte von Internetseiten. Um zu zeigen, dass auch komplizierte graphische Oberflächen mit dem Google Web Toolkit erzeugt werden können, wird das bekannte Brettspiel Agricola mittels Model-View-Presenter Designmuster implementiert. Zur Ermittlung der richtigen Technologie für das nächste Webprojekt findet ein Vergleich zwischen dem Google Web Toolkit und JavaServer Faces statt

This chapter is organized into nine interrelated sections. Since the evidence about the lares is so fragmented and disparate, each ancient text or image is examined in its own right. It clears the ground for the discussion by first addressing the debate in the antiquarian sources about the basic nature of lares. It argues against the interpretation of lares as spirits of the deceased and in favor of seeing them as benevolent deities of place and of travel. Moving on from the theoretical classification of these distinctly academic texts, it looks at both literary and epigraphic evidence from the archaic Arval hymn onward. The remainder of the chapter considers which Latin authors refer to twin lares as opposed to a single lar. It also draws together the evidence from painted iconography, written text, and ritual custom to suggest an overall interpretation of the lares and snakes as “gods of place,” who receive gifts and honor from a genius on the Bay of Naples.

Amphipoda, which lacks a manca stage, has had a tangled history in terms of suggested taxonomic affinities, abetted by the diversity of forms and habitats its members occupy. There is probably no greater “snake pit” in crustacean taxonomy than the classification of Amphipoda. Currently, there are approximately 10,160 species, and more are being described constantly. The Senticaudata are marked by incredible subtle diversity, with gammarideans as an example. Recently, the Ingolfiellida have been separated into their own order, and the subordinal organization of Amphipoda sensu stricto has been revamped into a series of hypotheses to be tested by future work. No fossils exist before the Eocene, yet many biogeographic analyses indicate the amphipods are a very ancient assemblage.

The Submarine Rescue Diving and Recompression System (SRDRS) is the U.S. Navy’s 21st century submarine rescue system. This paper briefly examines the submarine rescue system and highlights its salient features and advantages. Recognized Classification Societies have been providing independent third-party Classification / Certification services to the commercial marine industry for many decades. Over the last few years, navies worldwide are increasingly adapting the commercial Classification process for naval applications. This paper provides a general overview of the Classification process for typical underwater systems. Following this, the paper examines the application of Classification to some of the elements of the SRDRS and gives an insight into the ABS effort to support the development, deployment and operation of the SRDRS. The topics of discussion include the memorandum of agreement between the U.S Navy and ABS, the deficiency adjudication process, the ABS and “ABS-Plus” Rule requirements and the design of some of the elements of the SRDRS.

This paper presents a guide to identify the proper classification of weight data for USN ships using the Navy’s current Expanded Ship Work Breakdown Structure (ESWBS) system. ESWBS is a functional classification system that is used for weight reporting purposes. It is used on all USN ships as well as many other shipbuilding programs as a method by which all weight estimates are functionally organized. Also, ESWBS is used as an aid to developing ship cost estimates. With the introduction of newer technologies, materials and constructions practices in ship designs, the proper weight accounting has become more difficult and somewhat subjective. Therefore, this paper provides guidance and clarification on the proper weight classification of elements in a weight estimate with a focus on the newer technologies and practices.

Steps in the review process include Approval in Principle (AIP), risk assessments and current regulatory and classification design basis strategies. Included is a review of the applicable U.S. and international regulatory framework for hydrogen powered engines and fuel cell propulsion.

This paper outlines the design, assessment, and installation of a prototype ballast water treatment system for a double-hull tank ship. The IMO has established a timetable by which vessels must be equipped with ballast water treatment systems that meet a prescribed performance standard. Tank ship installations are particularly challenging because ballast piping is typically located in spaces defined by classification society rules as hazardous. These same rules do not readily allow the treatment equipment and piping to communicate with these spaces. The treatment system described in this paper has been demonstrated, through a risk assessment, to meet applicable classification society rules. Planned full-scale testing intends to show the operational safety, efficiency, and biological efficacy of this promising technology.

The emerging global economic needs are driving the designs for the next generation of ocean going vessels. Current ultra-large container carrier (10,000 TEU plus) designs are considerably larger and more complex than any currently in service. Proper and rational classification assessment requires that first principles based direct calculation methods be used to augment the standard classification review. The design philosophy behind the ABS Dynamic Loading Approach enables comprehensive identification of potential failure mechanisms. The scope of the necessary engineering assessment encompass full-ship finite element analysis under non-linear sea loads, spectral fatigue analysis, finite element lashing analysis, free and forced vibration analysis, and transient and impact load analysis. This paper describes key aspects of the DLA design philosophy such as non-linear sea loads, load combinations, various applications derived from full-ship finite element analysis. Several examples are given to highlight some critical failure mechanisms to be considered for ultra-large container carriers.
