This article reflects on a Situationist dérive in Central London, which mobilised a creative engagement with the city’s Quaternary history (the last 2.6 million years). The aim was to animate paleoecological knowledge in the resistant, opaque and frenetic environment of a dense urban centre. This brief excursion into an alternative London is offered as a model for contemporary drifting that stretches out beyond our immediate situation to connect to successive geological and biological strata, reframing experiences of the urban environment through shifting scales and chronologies. The Situationists had declared ‘sous les pavés, la plage!’ (under the paving stones, there is a beach!), evoking the playful space of possibility behind the veneer of the city’s systems and structures. This drift aimed to search even deeper, encountering spectral inhabitations revealed by the bones beneath the streets. The article argues that uncovering these hidden ecologies has the potential to counter the urban prevalence of spectacular representations of wildlife and develop an eco-politics of co-existence.

Анотація:

In forensic science, the theory of situational conditionality of pre-trial and judicial investigation is considered to be quite accepted. Programming the conduct of individual investigative (search) actions is a new means of solving tactical tasks by investigators during criminal proceedings. This raises the question of examining its situational conditionality. Under the situation of individual investigative (search) actions today, some scientists consider a set of conditions and circumstances that create the relevant situation – the situation during a specific investigative (search) action, which is due to the nature of the investigative (search) action, time and place, position and the behavior of the participants, the availability of evidence, the results of the investigator, and affect the tactics of this investigative (search) action. The article concludes that the situational approach is one of the most promising areas in criminology, which allows to strengthen the practical significance of scientific research. Given that the programs, which accumulate certain forensic knowledge aimed at application in investigative practice, are situationally determined, it is necessary to build programs for individual investigative (search) actions in accordance with typical situations identified in science on the basis of judicial analysis – investigative practice. In order to achieve the goal of forensic programming, investigative (search) action of any kind should be considered as a certain sequence of alternating situations. The most typical situations should be detailed and specific as possible. And the implementation of programs of investigative (search) actions within the framework of a specific act of investigation must also take place in accordance with the specific situations that arise. Анотація:

Тhe article deals with the types of consumer behavior on the market depending on the circumstances and life stage. It is emphasized that consumer behavior depends not only on external factors, but also on their outlook, education, innate characteristics. Approaches to the study of the essence of the Situational factors are determined and their possible influence on the consumer's choice is evaluated. The needs of individual clients are shaped both by the influence of their own characteristics and as appropriate. The classification of situational factors is given and determined that they can facilitate the purchase, interfere with or be neutral in the product of the consumer of a potential product. The analysis of individual situations that may influence consumer behavior is carried out. The influence of situations related to the presence of children in the purchasers, which may be present during the purchase and affect its process, has been investigated separately. The situation where different factors can intersect and affect consumers simultaneously is investigated. It is emphasized that some situations are deliberately created and some occur accidentally, under the influence of completely unforeseen situations. Thus, as a special place in the purchase process is the consumer communication with the seller, the importance of marketing service in the study of situational factors. It is stated that the task of the marketer is to see which situation is most typical in this particular case (place, time, characters). Summarizing the research, it is determined that many factors influence the behavior of the consumer, including external and internal factors (education, outlook, character, consumer perception also play a significant role in the consumption process).

Rhetoric is the conformity of speech with the eloquence of its vocabulary and its compounds according to the situation, that surrounds the speech is called the situational context. This includes the time and place, condition of the speakers and the addressees, and circumstances of the speech. Rhetoric does not stop at the choice of words, structures and rhetorical arts, according to the requirement of the situation. Rather, it goes beyond choosing expressive ways that carry those words, structures and rhetorical arts. The ways differ according to the difference of the situation, and the situation requires one way or another or more than one way to indicate the intended meanings. Expressive ways have been varied in the Quranic discourse considering the difference in situation to express the intended, it did not adopt only one way that express the intended in all situations. This research aims to study the expressive ways used in the Quranic discourse considering the difference in situation and its effect on the souls. The topic is addressed in this research with the descriptive approach and the analytical approach for highlighting the importance of expressive ways to reach the desired meaning in the Quranic discourse.

Анотація:

Plague of small ruminants (PSR) causes enormous economic damage to sheep and goat breeding. Mortality and lethality rates reach 100% of the total number of sick animals. The main materials for recording and analyzing the epizootic situation in foreign countries were: statistical data from the OIE yearbooks for 2007–2019. Cartographic data analysis was carried out using software known on the market for geographic information systems, QGIS, ArcGIS Decktop 10.4. A retrospective cartographic analysis of the epizootic situation of plague of small ruminants in the world in 2007–2019 showed that in 2017 the infection was registered in Mongolia (4 outbreaks, 1661 cases), in Israel (2 outbreaks, 34 cases), in China (2 outbreaks, 288 cases). In 2018, plague of small ruminants was registered in 7 countries of the world: Algeria, Bhutan, Bulgaria, Burundi, China, Israel, Sierra Leone. Algeria reported 6 outbreaks and 30 cases, Bhutan 1 outbreak and 1 case, Bulgaria 7 outbreaks, 28 cases, Burundi 8 outbreaks, 7395 cases, China 6 outbreaks, 1,757 cases, Israel 3 outbreaks, 560 cases , Sierra Leone – 7 outbreaks, 649 cases. As of December 2019, there were 10 outbreaks and 208 cases of small ruminants’ plague of in Israel, 99 outbreaks in Algeria and 3,139 cases, as well as 1 outbreak and 179 cases in Libya. By the retrospective analysis, it has been established that the nosoarea of the PSR pathogen is extremely widespread in many continents of the world.

Анотація:

Single-plate fixation bridging bone defects provokes nonunion and risks plate-fatigue failure due to under- dimensioned implants. Adding a helical plate to bridge the fracture increases stiffness and balances load sharing. This study compares the stiffness and plate surface strain of different constructs in a transverse contact and gap femoral shaft fracture model. Eight groups of six synthetic femora each were formed: intact femora; intact femora with lateral locking plate; contact and gap transverse shaft osteotomies each with lateral locking plate, lateral locking plate and helical locking plate, and long proximal femoral nail. Constructs underwent non-destructive quasi-static axial and torsional loading. Plate surface strain evaluation was performed under 200 N axial loading. Constructs with both lateral and helical plates demonstrated similar axial and torsional stiffness– independent of the contact or gap situations – being significantly higher compared to lateral plating (p < 0.01). Torsional stiffness of the constructs, with both lateral and helical plates in the gap situation, was significantly higher compared to this situation stabilised by a nail (p < 0.01). Plate surface strain dropped from 0.3 % in the gap situation with a lateral plate to < 0.1 % in this situation with both a lateral and a helical plate. Additional helical plating increases axial and torsional construct stiffness in synthetic bone and seems to provide well-balanced load sharing. Its use should be considered in very demanding situations for gap or defect fractures, where single-plate osteosynthesis provides inadequate stiffness for fracture healing and induces nonunion.

Notre recherche porte sur « plages urbaines spontanées » des villes non balnéaires, à savoir, les espaces publics contemporains où les citadins adoptent des comportements habituellement réservés à la plage, dans des lieux a priori non aménagés à cette fin. En effet, dans un contexte où le loisir et l’oisiveté détiennent une place grandissante dans la vie des citadins, certains lieux, par leur ambiance et leurs caractéristiques spatiales et sensibles, invitent à l’arrêt et deviennent les espaces privilégiés du relâchement et du dévoilement des corps. Ces situations de plages urbaines inattendues, émergeant dans certains espaces publics urbains contemporains, souvent au bord de l’eau et permettant aux citadins de se relâcher et d’exposer leurs corps au soleil, au sol, au vent et à l’altérité, sans que le lieu ne soit aménagé à l’image d’une plage, sont peu étudiées. Notre travail de thèse porte sur le phénomène de plage urbaine spontanée prenant place dans le milieu urbain. L’objectif de notre recherche est de comprendre la manière dont l’architecture appréhende le besoin d’éprouver le dépaysement en ville, en discernant les conditions spatiales et ambiantales entourant l’existence d’une situation de plage urbaine. Our research focuses on “spontaneous urban beaches” in non-seaside towns, i.e., contemporary public spaces in which citizens behave in a way usually reserved for the beach, in places that are not a priori adapted to this end. Indeed, in a context where entertainment and idleness are playing a growing role in citizens’ life, certain places, due to their ambiance or their spatial and sensitive characteristics, invite them to pause. They become privileged spaces for the relaxation and uncovering of bodies in copresence.These unexpected beach situations appear in certain contemporary urban public spaces, often near water, and they allow citizens to relax and expose their bodies to the sun, the ground, the wind and others in places that have not been planned to this end. Such situations are little studied. This thesis work deals with the phenomenon of spontaneous urban beaches taking place in urban areas. This research aims to understand the way architecture apprehends the need to experience a change of scenery in the city by perceiving the spatial and ambient conditions surrounding the existence of these situations.We will also identify the temporal, sociocultural and sensitive conditions that define them

Tibau do Sul est une commune littorale du Nordeste connue pour sa célèbre Praia da Pipa, un ancien village de paysans-pêcheurs devenu station balnéaire internationale et haut-lieu du surf brésilien. Située à la limite d’une zone de plantations sucrières, Pipa est fréquentée à des fins de villégiature dès le début du XXème siècle par l'élite agraire locale, mais ce n’est que dans les années 1970-80 que se développe le tourisme proprement dit, sous l’impulsion de jeunes surfeurs et de voyageurs hippies. Aujourd’hui, Tibau do Sul et Pipa forment une destination semblable à beaucoup d’autres, partagée entre culture globalisée et particularismes locaux. Fondée sur une analyse sociohistorique et ethnographique du développement touristique, la thèse étudie l’évolution des rapports sociaux au sein de la commune - en particulier à travers le marché foncier, les usages environnementaux, les activités culturelles et la politique locale - en soulignant leur dimension éminemment conflictuelle mais aussi créatrice. À contre-courant de certaines interprétations de sens commun présentant l e tourisme tantôt comme une forme « d’impérialisme culturel », voire de « néo-colonialisme », tantôt comme une « recette miracle » pour le développement économique, l’enquête insiste sur l’ambivalence du phénomène et l’importance du contexte local. À l’instar de la « situation coloniale » analysée en son temps par Georges Balandier (1951), la « situation touristique » est définie comme une configuration fondée sur une relation d’interdépendance entre les acteurs, sociologiquement et historiquement déterminée mais jamais acquise à l’avance. Le cas de Tibau do Sul révèle l’influence des structures sociales et foncières héritées des modes de production antérieurs - la paysannerie, la pèche et la culture de la canne à sucre - sur la trajectoire des communautés du littoral et sur les dispositions des agents locaux à s’investir dans le tourisme
Tibau do Sul is a coastal municipality in the northeast of Brazil, known for its spectacular beaches and famous seaside resort, Praia da Pipa. As it is located in a sugar cane plantation area, the local aristocracy has visited it for holiday vacations since the beginning of the 20th century. However, tourism eventually started developing in the 1970s and 1980s with the arrival of young surfers, attracted by its surf spots, its beautiful landscape and its “authentic” native people. At that time, the subversive attitude of these young travelers - inspired by the Brazilian counterculture - contrasts with the traditional elite vacationers’ paternalism. For the native population, the irruption of tourism opens up a new field of economic, social and political opportunities. It coincides with a series of simultaneous transformations: the decline of sugar cane plantations, the modernization of fishing, the development of public institutions. This conjunction of factors fosters the emergence of a small, politically involved native bourgeoisie, able to negotiate with the foreigners brought by tourism. As tourism grows internationally, new actors start settling in the village: tourism entrepreneurs, real estate agents, international investors, immigrant workers, second-home owners, environmentalists, public administrations, etc. This inflow of people entangles a un-precedented situation formed with culturally and socially very heterogeneous groups. This conflictive though creative setting generates much friction which as manifests itself through land and environmental struggles, cultural events, local media and politics. To address such a situation, this ethnographic study attempts to unravel the ambivalence of the tourism phenomenon by questioning the reductive visions depicting tourism as a form of “neo-colonialism” or as “miracle recipe” for development. Following Georges Balandier’s analysis of the “colonial situation” (1951), the tourism situation is defined as a social setting based on the interdependency between the actors, which is always historically determined but never taken for granted. In the case of Tibau do Sul, the study reveals the strong influence of the social and land tenure structures - inherited from the former modes of production (sugar cane plantations, peasantry, and fishing) - on the tourism trajectory of the coastal communities

Ce mémoire propose un modèle décomposé en cinq phases ayant pour but d’améliorer la logistique humanitaire en cas de catastrophe naturelle. Le principe de ce modèle est de gérer de façon continue les différentes phases afin d’éviter les problèmes de coordination. Les phases proposées sont : (1) la localisation d'un dépôt permanent ; (2) le transport immédiat des premières denrées ; (3) la localisation d'un dépôt temporaire ; (4) la détermination des besoins et (5) la planification du transport à moyen terme. Pour vérifier certaines hypothèses du modèle sur la localisation du dépôt permanent, l'évolution dans le temps des dégâts causés par les catastrophes naturelles aux Antilles et en Amérique Centrale a été étudiée. Cette évolution est représentée par le nombre de morts, de blessés, de sans-abris, de personnes affectées et par les dommages économiques. La répartition des diverses catégories de dégâts entre les différents pays a également été étudiée. Une forte différence entre les deux régions a été remarquée, ainsi qu’une disparité entre les catégories étudiées. Pour vérifier le fonctionnement des différentes phases, des simulations en utilisant des données sur des catastrophes récentes ont été effectuées.

This thesis presents work focused on the creation of a sociable space for communication online. Sociable communication requires the ability to converse with others using simple and meaningful mechanisms, supporting flexibility and expressiveness. Equally important is the ability for people to read the space they inhabit and make sense of it in socially significant ways, such as people watching to observe others' interests and interaction styles. A third key to sociable communication is emphasis on identity and embodiment, giving participants a strong sense of themselves and others through their online representations. These issues are approached through research in areas ranging from sociology to urban architecture, directed at finding bases for the design of capabilities that are useful and engaging in the context of computer support for distributed multiparty communication. The result of this research is Talking in Circles, a graphical audio conferencing environment that employs abstract graphics for representation and provides lightweight access to multiple expressive modes. This thesis discusses foundations for work towards sociable communication online as well as the design and implementation processes involved in the creation of the Talking in Circles system. User experiences with the system, lessons learned and directions for further research into sociable communication are then detailed.

Since 1997 and the accession of New Labour to Government, area-based regeneration programmes have been undertaken to alleviate multiple deprivation within inner-city areas. Improvements and positive change was to be achieved through the implementation of Urban Regeneration Companies, who were responsible for establishing a regeneration framework for the area and overseeing its implementation. This thesis undertook a multi-methods approach to understanding how regeneration practice has impacted upon sense of place and well-being amongst local residents living within an area of regeneration in the North-West of England. The research incorporated both a pragmatic and participatory approach to the research, drawing upon visual methods to capture the experiences of local residents, alongside more traditional research approaches, including participant observations in the community and semi-structured interviews with residents and regeneration professionals. Fieldwork was conducted over an 18- month period between 2006 and 2008, during which I undertook a 12-month placement at an Urban Regeneration Company in the North-West of England. The findings from the study identified a disconnect between how local residents experienced notions of sense of place and well-being and that articulated by the professional community through regeneration practice. Local residents discussed a sense of place-well-being dynamic, identifying the importance of third places within the community and reflecting upon their deep rooted attachment to home. Physical transformation brought about by regeneration professionals had the potential to undermine this sense of place-well-being dynamic, challenging local residents' claims to space and resulting in the alienation of local residents in the place- making process. A stakeholder event was facilitated at the end of the research to engage the professional and resident community in a process of active dialogue and shared visioning. The outcome was a series of recommendations for changes to regeneration practice and policy that need to be implemented if regeneration is to situate notions of sense of place and well-being within the change process and to ensure that local residents are involved in the place-making agenda. In capturing and bringing together the perspectives of both the resident and professional community within a single regeneration programme, the research makes a unique contribution to the field of sense of place, well-being and urban regeneration practice.

Introduction. The epidemiological situation of tuberculosis in Ukraine does not tend to improve. Background. In Europe extra pulmonary tuberculosis is 97% and in Ukraine - 3%. But affection of the bones among children of preschool age began to increase. This generates some diagnostic difficulties. The goal of the work is to share research with pediatricians, pediatric surgeons and orthopedists with features of tuberculosisosteitis and its diagnosis in preschool age groups.

Le vieillissement normal ou sénescence affecte les trois fonctions principales utilisées pour le contrôle de l'équilibre et de la posture, la réception des informations sensorielles, l'intégration des ces informations et l'effection motrice de ces commandes par le système musculaire. Ce travail a eu pour objet d'évaluer la place du traitement cognitif des informations sensorielles dans la réalisation de l'équilibration. Normal ageing or senescence is known to affect these three functions and incidentally balance control, reception of sensory information, integration of information destined to the construction and the programming by the nervous system of a set of instructions and motor execution of these orders by the muscular system. This work aimed to assess the place of cognitive sensorial information processing in balance performance. These results were discussed in terms of age-dependent evolution of the relative places of automatic and cognitive processings in balance performance, particularly for the validation of the assumption that ageing induces a requisite increase of cognitive load with expression in a large mobilisation of attentional resources and cognitive operative processes which, in the same time, decreased in availability and potentiality

This researcher describes the characteristics of place...physical, cultural and human...of a small Kentucky county and looks at the incidence of disease and dying that occurred in that place in the last half of the nineteenth century. The impact of death on particular subsets of the general population was given a closer evaluation. Very young, females and the slave/Black communities were investigated individually. The overall site and situation of all aspects of Trimble County, Kentucky were viewed in an effort to support the notion that it is the manner in which man interacts with this environment that causes disease and death and that is not the environment itself that destroys human life.

Two-dimensional natural convective heat transfer from vertical plates has been extensively studied. However, when the width of the plate is relatively small compared to its height, the heat transfer rate can be greater than that predicted by these two-dimensional flow results. Because situations that can be approximately modelled as narrow vertical plates occur in a number of practical situations, there exists a need to be able to predict heat transfer rates from such narrow plates. Attention has here been given to a plate with a uniform surface heat flux. The magnitude of the edge effects will, in general, depend on the boundary conditions existing near the edge of the plate. To examine this effect, two situations have been considered. In one, the heated plate is imbedded in a large plane adiabatic surface, the surfaces of the heated plane and the adiabatic surface being in the same plane while in the second there are plane adiabatic surfaces above and below the heated plate but the edge of the plate is directly exposed to the surrounding fluid. The flow has been assumed to be steady and laminar and it has been assumed that the fluid properties are constant except for the density change with temperature which gives rise to the buoyancy forces, this having been treated by using the Boussinesq approach. It has also been assumed that the flow is symmetrical about the vertical centre-plane of the plate. The solution has been obtained by numerically solving the full three-dimensional form of the governing equations, these equations being written in terms of dimensionless variables. Results have only been obtained for a Prandtl number of 0.7. A wide range of the other governing parameters have been considered for both edge situations and the conditions under which three dimensional flow effects can be neglected have been deduced.

A theoretical approach for calculating the movement of liquid water following deposition onto a turbomachine rotor blade is described. Such a situation can occur during operation of an aero-engine in rain. The equation of motion of the deposited water is developed on an arbitrarily oriented plane triangular surface facet. By dividing the blade surface into a large number of facets and calculating the water trajectory over each one crossed in turn, the overall trajectory can be constructed. Apart from the centrifugal and Coriolis inertia effects, the forces acting on the water arise from the blade surface friction, and the aerodynamic shear and pressure gradient. Non-dimensionalisation of the equations of motion provides considerable insight and a detailed study of water flow on a flat rotating plate set at different stagger angles demonstrates the paramount importance of blade surface friction. The extreme cases of low and high blade friction are examined and it is concluded that the latter (which allows considerable mathematical generalisation) is the most likely in practice. It is also shown that the aerodynamic shear force, but not the pressure force, may influence the water motion. Calculations of water movement on a low-speed compressor blade and the fan blade of a high bypass ratio aero-engine suggest that in low rotational speed situations most of the deposited water is centrifuged rapidly to the blade tip region.

To master the rules in shrouded blade design, an experimental system, including plane-shrouded blade, exciting system and measurement system, was designed to measure dynamic responses of non-rotating shrouded blade exactly, in which initial normal load can be put on the friction interface by a load disc accurately. The dynamic response of the first bending mode of the shrouded blade with various shroud contact angles and shroud situations were measured under different initial normal loads on the interface and different exciting force. The effects of the normal preload, shroud contact angle and shroud situation on the friction damping are analyzed from the test results. The results indicate that there is an optimal preload under which the shroud contact can provide optimum performance in dissipating vibratory energy for a given exciting force, and the larger is the relative motion between the interfaces, the more is the dissipating vibratory energy. Some laws that must be obeyed in the design of shroud contact angle and shroud situation are also concluded. The experimental results can be used to verify the theoretical and numerical results.

The interaction between driver and vehicle is analyzed in the paper. The driver acts on the steering wheel to modify the trajectory and to control the vehicle during panic situations. The knowledge of the forces exerted by the driver at the steering wheel is useful for a better understanding of the driver steering action. The final aim is to inspire the development of haptic steering wheels for better tuning of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). An instrumented steering wheel has been used, which includes two six axis load cells to measure the forces and the moments exerted by the driver hands and six sensors used to measure the grip strength. Two maneuvers have been considered, a moderate speed turn and a kick plate test which simulates a panic situation with an impulsive lateral disturbance. For both of the two considered situations, some common driving behaviors have been highlighted and analyzed. The preliminary results encourage the development of haptic instrumented steering wheels, able to improve ADAS. Actually it seems possible to infer the driver steering purpose before the steering wheel is actually rotated.

Review question / Objective: What is, and how is it expressed, the interaction between the phenomenon of ageism and society's attitude and coping with a disaster situation, such as the Cuvid-19 pandemic in the professional literature? Condition being studied: The covid-19 pandemic is a type of disaster situation, as the impact of pandemics is similar to the impact of other disasters in several respects: a wide range of impact affecting society as a whole, and an increase in uncertainty and long range of impacts. At the same time, pandemics stand out as being a pervasive, unavoidable and invisible danger (Pappas et al., 2009), and this characteristic blocks us from the usual methods that can allow us to regain a sense of control. It can be said that this complex reality has led to a recognition of the need for a deeper understanding of the interaction between the reality of disaster situations (or in this case - a disaster event in the form of a global pandemic), and the phenomenon of ageism, as well as the status and place of older persons in society.

The outbreak of COVID-19 also resulted in moderate changes to the operation of the domestic rice value chain in Ethiopia. These were caused by changing responses of value chain actors (domestic and others engaged in rice imports) to the COVID-19 prevention measures put in place by the government. These changes increased the price of rice, which favoured rice producers and adversely affected urban consumers. This research note assesses household rice consumption patterns in Addis Ababa by comparing the situation before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, using a representative sample of households.

Анотація:

One of the successful components of quality assimilation of educational material and its further use in the learning process is visualization of material in secondary education institutions. Visualizations need the subjects of the school course, which are the most difficult to understand and essentially do not have at the beginning of the study of widespread practical application, mostly mathematical objects. That is why this study aimed to analyze mobile tools that can be used to visualize teaching geometry. The object of the study is the process of teaching geometry in the middle classes of secondary schools. The subject of the study is the use of augmented reality tools in teaching geometry to students in grades 7-9. The study used such research methods as the analysis and justification of the choice of mobile augmented reality for the study of mathematics. Analyses displayed two augmented reality tools: ArloonGeometry and Geometry AR. In order to gain geometry instruction’s academic success for the students, these tools can be used by teachers to visualize training material and create a problematic situation. The use of augmented reality means in the geometry lessons creates precisely such conditions for positive emotional interaction between the student and the teacher. It also provided support to reduce fear and anxiety attitudes towards geometry classes. The emotional component of learning creates the conditions for better memorization of the educational material, promotes their mathematical interest, realizes their creative potential, creates the conditions for finding different ways of solving geometric problems.

The article continues, for the first time in English in domestic science, to study the question of the need to create a new scientific theory – the theory of mass information. For the first time too raises the question of creating, in a place of the current theory of mass communication, a system of sciences including: a) mass information (shpuld be created now in rpoh of mass information), b) the theory of mass understanding (has created as a hermeneutics of the masses), c) the theory of mass communication (has created as a theory of the transfer of content) and the theory of mass emotions (started to create in 2017). This is a paradoxical situation – the absence of fundamental theory of mass information in the epoch of mass information. Researches in the scientific works of foreign mass communication also showed the absence of a holistic theory, as well as attempts to create it, even the lack of decisions on the need to create it as a new scientific field.

Any research must follow ethical principles, particularly when it involves people as participants and is likely to impact them. This is standard practice in academic research and a legal requirement in medical trials, but also applies to research carried out by Oxfam. Oxfam’s work focuses on vulnerable populations, and takes place under difficult circumstances. When research takes place in such vulnerable and fragile contexts, high ethical standards need to be met and tailored to the specific characteristics of each situation. Oxfam welcomes the adaptation of this guideline by other NGOs, community organizations and researchers working in fragile contexts and with vulnerable communities. The guideline should be read together with other relevant Oxfam and Oxfam GB policies and protocols, including the guidelines on Writing Terms of Reference for Research, Integrating Gender in Research Planning and Doing Research with Enumerators. A flowchart summarizing the guideline is also available to download on this page.

One of the leading Western Ukrainian diaspora journals – London «Liberation Way», founded in January 1949, has become the subject of the study for the first time in journalism. Archival documents and materials of the Ukrainian Publishing Union in London and the British National Library (British Library) were also observed. The peculiarities of the magazine’s formation and the specifics of the editorial policy, founders and publishers are clarified. A group of OUN members who survived Hitler’s concentration camps and ended up in Great Britain after the end of World War II initiated the foundation of the magazine. Until April 1951, including issue 42, the Board of Foreign Parts of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists were the publishers of the magazine. From 1951 to the beginning of 2000 it was a socio-political monthly of the Ukrainian Publishing Union. From the mid-60’s of the twentieth century – a socio-political and scientific-literary monthly. In analyzing the programmatic principles of the magazine, the most acute issues of the Ukrainian national liberation movement, which have long separated the forces of Ukrainian emigration and from which the founders and publishers of the magazine from the beginning had clearly defined positions, namely: ideology of Ukrainian nationalism, the idea of unity of Ukraine and Ukrainians, internal inter-party struggle among Ukrainian emigrants have been singled out. The review and systematization of the thematic palette of the magazine’s publications makes it possible to distinguish the following main semantic accents: the formation of the nationalist movement in exile; historical Ukrainian themes; the situation in sub-Soviet Ukraine; the problem of the unity of Ukrainians in the Western diaspora; mission and tasks of Ukrainian emigration in the context of its responsibilities to the Motherland. It also particularizes the peculiarities of the formation of the author’s assets of the magazine and its place in the history of Ukrainian national journalism.

Анотація:

In Pakistan, where gender-based discrimination is already rampant, women and girls belonging to religious minority or belief communities face multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination over and above those faced by an average Pakistani woman and girl. This policy briefing shares findings from a study on the situation of socioeconomically excluded Christian women and girls in Pakistan. During the research, they discussed their experiences of different forms of discrimination, which predominantly took place within their workplace (largely sanitary, domestic and factory work) and educational institutes, particularly in government schools. They described being restricted in their mobility by their families and communities who are fearful of the threats of forced conversion, and both poor and affluent women relayed experiences of harassment at healthcare and education facilities once their religious identity is revealed.
