The article is devoted to Baroness Yu.P. Vrevskaya, who, despite her status and position in society, became a sister of mercy. Russian and European authors dedicated their best works to her. Yu.P. Vrevskaya became a symbol of sacrificial love. The origins of her feat, which are rooted in her "military" childhood and upbringing, are considered; reading the works of Russian classics, in particular, I.S. Turgenev, determined her character, and early widowhood formed a special path – the path of service to one's neighbor. Reflections on the fate of Yu.P. Vrevskaya became the subject of creative discoveries in the artistic world of I.S. Turgenev, served to develop the theme of women's service and women's feat. Special attention is paid to the literary interests of Yu.P. Vrevskaya, her reading of the works of A.S. Pushkin, F.M. Dostoevsky, J. Sand, Cervantes, V. Hugo, Dickens, etc. In the books, Yu.P. Vrevskaya is looking for the meaning of life and role models. The personality and fate of Yu.P. Vrevskaya are considered in the context of historical events – the Caucasian War, the Russian-Turkish War, as well as in the context of social movements – the history of the Red Cross.

In the second half of 19th century, newborn Italy was invaded by innovative ideas supported by democratic, liberal, and socialist intellectuals who wanted to renew social life, economy, and moral values by spreading their ideas both in politics and in everyday life. Right-wing reaction used the same methods of communication and persuasion: the publication of journals and books and their promotion in reading cabinets and public libraries. Maria and Antonia Ponti, two upper-middle-class sisters who married into aristocracy, used their influence and resources to advance the status of women in society. They founded associations and libraries (in Ravenna, Imola, and Bergamo) with the theoretical support of a network of Italian intellectuals, including Cor-rado Ricci, Vilfredo Pareto, and Maffeo Pantaleoni. The philanthropic actions of the sisters, who combined their Catholic and conservative point of view with the improvement of the condition of women, have handed down a remarkable legacy in the form of books and a collection of laces.

The Book of Job as a source of intertexts for T.T. Cloete’s short story ‘Wie weet?’ (Die waarheid gelieg, 1984) T.T. Cloete’s account of a woman's physical and spiritual agony in the short story “Wie weet?” ffrom Die waarheid gelieg, 1984), read within the South African/Afrikaans cultural context, presents several indicators that the Book of Job is its intertext, the most explicit pointer being the role of the sufferer’s sister-in-law. Intertextuality in Cloete’s oeuvre often takes the form of a creative reworking or rereading of texts (cf Scholtz, 1984; Botha, 1984; Roos, 1986). Roos comments on the caricatural treatment of theme in Cloete’s “Veg om te verloor” (Cloete, 1984), highlighted by the rereading imposed on the reader of Van Melle’s well-known story "Die joiner”, creating distrust in the implicit author of the Cloete text. The argument in this essay is that the explicit engagement of the intertext, as in "Wie weet?”, also serves as an affirmative complement to the negative incompleteness of the rereading. Thus the desperate questioning of "Wie weet?” becomes an integral part of a reading of Cloete’s oeuvre as a hymn to God’s omnipotence and mercy, epitomized in the poem "Van Horn en my” (Jukstaposisie, 1982).

When I was 12, I wanted a diary with a lock and key; the kind little sisters can’t get into. Later in my teen years, I used to write each day’s event in a small calendar. Throughout the years I have seen the value of journaling in my own life and more recently I have read articles about its benefits in a classroom. Therefore, when my students in Reading and Writing level 2 said they wanted to write more, I thought this might be a good idea. So, armed with small blue exam books and markers for their names, I explained to my class what we were going to do.

The article presents an introduction to a first Russian translation of the “Life of Lady Falkland” written in the mid-17th century by the nuns of the English Benedictine Abbey at Cambrai (the Cary sisters), which told the life of their mother, Elizabeth Cary, Viscountess of Falkland – a translator, poet and polemicist, and also a Catholic convert. It has been argued that the “Life” combines the traits of biography and conversion story, and that the conversions described there – of Lady Falkland and her children fell into the category of the so-called “intellectual conversions” brought about by reading books and debating the fine points of religious doctrines. “Intellectual conversions’ were seen to be reserved to men. However, the Cary sisters used this model to establish their position within the Cambrai religious community, which consisted of many nuns with wide intellectual interests. The authors of the “Life” also demonstrated that intellectual efforts of their mother led to conversions of others to Catholicism, thus making her a Catholic missionary in all but a name.

This research is included in library research (library research), namely research conducted using literature (library) both in the form of Tafsir Al-Misbah by M. Quraish Shihab., as well as books, theses or journals that study related to reading and listening to the Al-Qur'an 'an. The approach used in this study is the maudhu'i (thematic) interpretation method approach, namely looking at themes related to the etiquette of reading and listening to verses of the Koran. The method used is content analysis, namely analyzing the interpretation of the mufassir figures on verses related to the etiquette of reading and listening to verses of the Qur'an. Based on the results of the research that the writer has done, the writer finds that according to the interpretation of M. Quraish Shihab in the Book of Tafsir Al-Misbah about saweran through the letter verse Qs.al-A'raf: 204, that Allah SWT emphasizes that when the Qur'an is recited, then the order is to listen carefully, and pay attention quietly so that you will receive mercy. So it is forbidden if when the verses of the Qur'an are recited the listeners are busy doing actions that can lead to actions that disturb other people in listening to the Qur'an when it is recited including saweran without commenting on the content and meaning of the verse being recited.

The turn of the 19th – 20th centuries is considered to be the beginning of the formation of the phenomenon that will be called "mass culture". The general crisis, population migration, the collapse of the aristocracy and common attitudes and values of Orthodoxy led to a radical change in social institutions, social strata and customary classes. Industrialization led to a reduction in working hours, manual labor began to be replaced by machine labor; therefore, a clear boundary arose between the two spheres of life of the urban working mass, i.e. work and leisure. In a traditional society, free time was spent with family, professional community, or neighbors - one way or another, in a team. In the divided and variegated mass of the city, people found themselves on their own. The leisure of the atomized mass subjects demanded satisfaction of the need to rest, to escape from the stupefying, "alienated", monotonous labor. The response to this need is the entertainment industry of mass culture, whose values are in the form of a commodity. There is a huge, massive demand for products and services that meet the needs of leisure: books, magazines, records, films. The article shows that mass culture at the average level consolidates the popular stereotypes of female images in the mass consciousness in accordance with their functional purpose. Positive female images of mothers (traditional type) and sisters of mercy (high incarnation of the fatal type) dominate in social advertising appealing to universal values and spirituality. Commercial advertisements that appeal to seduction and recognition represent an idealized femme fatale. The art of cinematography addresses deeply rooted motives of fall and rise, physical desecration and moral cleansing (the dominant type of the fatal heroine). The material of the article can be useful in the preparation of courses on the history of Russian culture and history of art.

Kartini movie may not succeed commercially, but it had 34 nominations and won 3 awards from 3 different film festivals. These different perspectives allowing variety tendencies of active audience reception. In prior researches, shows that Indonesia still facing a gender inequality in the fields of education. This study aims provides overview of the four active audiences reception on Kartini movie, in order to be a medium that creating an equal society using qualitative approach and constructivism paradigm. This study concluded that there are tendencies of dominant meanings acceptance in Kartini movie. All of the four subjects felt that it delivered such powerful messages about creating an equal society. They agreed that the messages delivered in three main scenes of the movie. The first scene is when Kartini persuade her sisters to free their souls and minds by reading books. The second scene is when Kartini was told by a moslem leaders, that both of men and women must have equal opportunities to a proper education. The last scene is when Kartini giving terms and conditions to a man who proposed her to be his wives, it successfully giving a proper education to women and children in needs.

African American history is the black spot in the history of humanity since it represents mankind as monsters who enjoy hurting others and feel the pleasure of looking at them crying loudly due to pain. Thus, the main purpose of this paper is to shed light on the history of Afro-American literature to know why African American history is full of gloomy memories and to highlight the well-known figures in it. This paper is an analytical and descriptive study and the data are taken from relevant books, theses, essays, and journals. The cultural and historical aspects of this data through close reading and by using comparative and critical methods are studied. Since Yaa Gyasi is one of the African American authors who wants to show the real picture of black people suffering during and after slavery. It was decided to analyze her novel Homegoing. This paper ends up proving that the Afro-Americans faced without any mercy all kinds of oppression, horrors, and pains from slavery, segregation, and the white community discrimination due to their color and ethnicity as it was protruded in Homegoing. As a result, literature was seen as a perfect tool to tell the world what happened to black people and many black authors like Yaa Gyasi became famous icons in the world of literature because of their massive contributions in the field of Afro-American Literature.

This research deals with the review of the exegesis of Surat “Al-Rahman” from the book “The Clear Answers to Hidden Questions in the Exegesis of the Quranic Verses” by the great Scholar: Ali bin Muhammad Alaa Al-Din Al-Masry, deceased in 1127 AH (1715 AD). The review of this book contributes to highlighting the legacy of this Scholar, who was characterized by creativity in classification, good presentation and writing, especially as this Scholar did not have a detailed biography discussion. Therefore, the review of his books gives a picture of his knowledge, through which it was found that he was expert in many sciences, especially exegesis. This review also sheds light on a type of literature of the eleventh century. The book manifest feeds the exegesis library with one of the precious books that is based on the question-and-answer approach in exegesis, which is a distinctive approach that enriches exegesis and develops reflection. The author was keen on inferring from the Quran, the Sunnah, and the sayings of the predecessors, and the Scholars, combining the methods of exegesis, so he interprets the verse with its counterparts, sometimes with hadith, and sometimes with the words of the commentators, and sometimes in Arabic language. His answers were equable and accurate and did not depart from the sayings of the scholars. Because he did not answer verbally, but rather he answered them after reading some of the works of exegesis, such as Al-Baghawi, and Al-Jalalain exegeses, and others. The author follows the transmission and did not attribute to himself one saying, rather, all of his answers were quoted from the Imams - may Allah the Almighty have mercy on them - with his attention to the seven readings, and their good guidance. Therefore, it is necessary to benefit from the author’s method in presenting the exegesis answer; as he explains the strange word, clarifies the rhetorical style, and the like, which raises the question, and arouses interest and draws contemplation.

The paper offers a reading of Toni Morrison’s 2008 novel A Mercy as an alternative history of colonial North America focused on empowering the powerless and giving a voice to those silenced and overlooked in mainstream histories. The theoretical framework is based on Hayden White’s idea of history as inevitably imbued with fictionalized elements, Homi Bhabha’s interpretation and Morrison’s idea of ‘rememory’ and the black feminist idea of acquiring one’s own voice by becoming the speaking subject. The main thesis is that Morrison’s book offers an alternative version of early American history by giving voices to the representatives of various minority groups from the colonial period of North America: white immigrant, African American, mixed-race and Native American women and indentured servants. Using multiple narrators, Morrison not only manages to complement ‘official’ history books but also to use individual narrators as symbols of the collective experiences of their respective groups.

In this chapter, I explore the early poetic careers of George Eliot and the Brontë sisters, situating their work within the market for popular poetry in the periodical and newspaper press. I begin by analyzing George Eliot’s school notebook from 1834, which includes twenty-four poems she copied from periodicals, newspapers, and books. I trace the probable source publications of some of these poems in order to illuminate Eliot’s teenage reading practices. I then explore how her early experiences as a reader and writer carried over into one of her first prose publications, ‘Poetry and Prose from the Notebook of an Eccentric.’ In the second part of this chapter, I focus on the parallel history of the Brontë sisters’ entry into the world of print, 1846–50. I first analyze Charlotte’s understanding of the periodical field and then examine her advertising strategies for Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, highlighting her keen awareness of the literary marketplace. Today, this volume is seen as something of a failure—a prelude to the Brontës’ more successful careers as novelists. Yet due to the practice of reprinting among popular periodicals and newspapers, the Brontës’ poetry reached broader audiences than has hitherto been understood.
