Sindbis virus (SINV) is a mosquito-borne virus in the genus Alphavirus, family Togaviridae. Like most alphaviruses, SINVs exhibit lytic infection (apoptosis) in many mammalian cell types, but are generally thought to cause persistent infection with only moderate cytopathic effects in mosquito cells. However, there have been several reports of apoptotic-like cell death in mosquitoes infected with alphaviruses or flaviviruses. Given that apoptosis has been shown to be an antiviral response in other systems, we have constructed recombinant SINVs that express either pro-apoptotic or anti-apoptotic genes in order to test the effects of inducing or inhibiting apoptosis on SINV replication in mosquito cells. Recombinant SINVs expressing the pro-apoptotic genes reaper (rpr) from Drosophila or michelob_x (mx) from Aedes aegypti caused extensive apoptosis in cells from the mosquito cell line C6/36, thus changing the normal persistent infection observed with SINV to a lytic infection. Although the infected cells underwent apoptosis, high levels of virus replication were still observed during the initial infection. However, virus production subsequently decreased compared with persistently infected cells, which continued to produce high levels of virus over the next several days. Infection of C6/36 cells with SINV expressing the baculovirus caspase inhibitor P35 inhibited actinomycin D-induced caspase activity and protected infected cells from actinomycin D-induced apoptosis, but had no observable effect on virus replication. This study is the first to test directly whether inducing or inhibiting apoptosis affects arbovirus replication in mosquito cells.

Sindbis virus (SINV) is a mosquito-borne alphavirus circulating globally. SINV outbreaks have been mainly reported in North-European countries. In Israel, SINV was detected in 6.3% of mosquito pools; however, SINV infection in humans has rarely been diagnosed. A serologic survey to detect SINV IgG antibodies was conducted to evaluate the seroprevalence of SINV in the Israeli population. In total, 3145 serum samples collected in 2011–2014, representing all age and population groups in Israel, were assessed using an indirect ELISA assay, and a neutralization assay was performed on all ELISA-positive samples. The prevalence rates of SINV IgG antibodies were calculated. Logistic regressions models were applied to assess the association between demographic characteristics and SINV seropositivity. Overall, 113 (3.6%) and 59 (1.9%) samples were positive for ELISA and neutralization SINV IgG, respectively. Multivariable analysis demonstrated that SINV seropositivity was significantly associated with older age and residence outside metropolitan areas. These results demonstrate that, despite no outbreaks or clinical presentation, SINV infects the human population in Israel. Seropositivity is countrywide, more frequent in people of older age, and less diffuse in Israel’s metropolitan areas. Seroprevalence studies from other countries will add to our understanding of the global burden of SINV and the risk for potential SINV outbreaks.

Sindbis virus (SINV), a positive-sense single stranded RNA virus that causes mild symptoms in humans, is transmitted by mosquito bites. SINV reverse genetics have many implications, not only in understanding alphavirus transmission, replication cycle, and virus-host interactions, but also in biotechnology and biomedical applications. The rescue of SINV infectious particles is usually achieved by transfecting susceptible cells (BHK-21) with SINV-infectious mRNA genomes generated from cDNA constructed via in vitro translation (IVT). That procedure is time consuming, costly, and relies heavily on reagent quality. Here, we constructed a novel infectious SINV cDNA construct that expresses its genomic RNA in yeast cells controlled by galactose induction. Using spheroplasts made from this yeast, we established a robust polyethylene glycol-mediated yeast: BHK-21 fusion protocol to rescue infectious SINV particles. Our approach is timesaving and utilizes common lab reagents for SINV rescue. It could be a useful tool for the rescue of large single strand RNA viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2.

Sindbis virus (SINV) is an alphavirus that has a broad host range and has been widely used as a vector for recombinant gene transduction, DNA-based vaccine production, and oncolytic cancer therapy. The mechanism of SINV entry into host cells has yet to be fully understood. In this paper, we used single virus tracking under total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM) to investigate SINV attachment to cell surface. Biotinylated viral particles were labeled with quantum dots, which retained viral viability and infectivity. By time-lapse imaging, we showed that the SINV exhibited a heterogeneous dynamics on the surface of the host cells. Analysis of SINV motility demonstrated a two-step attachment reaction. Moreover, dual color TIRFM of GFP-Rab5 and SINV suggested that the virus was targeted to the early endosomes after endocytosis. These findings demonstrate the utility of quantum dot labeling in studying the early steps and behavior of SINV infection.

The imported fire ants,Solenopsis invictaandS. richteriwere introduced into the USA between 1918 and 1945. Since that time, they have expanded their USA range to include some 138 million hectares. Their introduction has had significant economic consequences with costs associated with damage and control efforts estimated at 6 billion dollars annually in the USA. The general consensus of entomologists and myrmecologists is that permanent, sustainable control of these ants in the USA will likely depend on self-sustaining biological control agents. A metagenomics approach successfully resulted in discovery of three viruses infectingS. invicta.Solenopsis invicta virus 1(SINV-1), SINV-2, and SINV-3 are all positive, single-stranded RNA viruses and represent the first viral discoveries in any ant species. Molecular characterization, host relationships, and potential development and use of SINV-1, SINV-2, and SINV-3 as biopesticides are discussed.

Although Old World alphaviruses, Middelburg- (MIDV) and Sindbis virus (SINV), have previously been detected in horses and wildlife with neurologic disease in South Africa, the pathogenesis and clinical presentation of MIDV and SINV infections in animals are not well documented. Clinical samples from horses across South Africa with acute or fatal neurologic and febrile infections submitted between 2014–2018 were investigated. In total, 69/1084 (6.36%) and 11/1084 (1.01%) horses tested positive for MIDV and SINV, respectively, by real-time reverse transcription (RT) PCR. Main signs/outcomes for MIDV (n = 69): 73.91% neurological, 75.36% fever, 28.99% icterus and anorexia, respectively, 8.70% fatalities; SINV (n = 11): 54.54% neurological, 72.73% fever, 36.36% anorexia and 18.18% fatalities. MIDV cases peaked in the late summer/autumn across most South African provinces while SINV cases did not show a clear seasonality and were detected in fewer South African provinces. MIDV could still be detected in blood samples via RT-PCR for up to 71,417 and 21 days after onset of signs in 4 horses respectively, suggesting prolonged replication relative to SINV which could only be detected in the initial sample. Phylogenetic analyses based on partial sequences of the nsP4 (MIDV n = 59 and SINV n = 7) and E1 (MIDV n = 45) genes, as well as full genome sequences (MIDV n = 6), clustered the MIDV and SINV strains from the present study with previously detected strains. MIDV infection appears to be more prevalent in horses than SINV infection based on RT-PCR results, however, prevalence estimates might be different when also considering serological surveillance data.

Contexte : Le virus du Chikungunya (CHIKV), de la Forêt de Semliki (SFV) et de Sindbis (SINV) appartiennent au genre Alphavirus et sont transmis par des moustiques. CHIKV a provoqué récemment des épidémies planétaires causant de graves maladies. Les alphavirus sont enveloppés d'une membrane lipidique et infectent les cellules par voie d'endocytose ; le milieu acide des endosomes induit la fusion de l'enveloppe virale et de la membrane endosomique, fusion catalysée par la protéine d'enveloppe E1. Celle-ci appartient à la classe II des protéines de fusion, et est repliée en trois domaines (I, II et III) organisés en longueur avec I au centre et II et III de chaque côté, le domaine III se prolongeant par une tige ("stem") suivi par le segment trans-membranaire (TM) ancré dans la membrane virale. Le long domaine II expose à son extrémité une "boucle de fusion" hydrophobe, qui s'insère dans la membrane cible avant un changement de conformation de E1. E1 s'organise alors en trimères sur la membrane virale, ses trois sous-unités se pliant ensuite au milieu pour amener les domaines III sur le coté de chaque trimère, ainsi que le "stem" et le TM de façon à juxtaposer cette région avec le peptide de fusion. Ceci force les membranes virale et cellulaire l'une contre l'autre, provoquant leur fusion. Méthodes: Nous avons produit les ectodomaines recombinants de E1 (I, II, III et "stem") de ces trois alphavirus avec des mutations dans la boucle de fusion de façon à les rendre solubles sous la forme trimérique, post-fusion. Nous les avons cristallisé et déterminé leurs structures par cristallographie aux rayons X. Résultats: Notre travail montre que la conformation des protéines de fusion de E1 de ces trois alphavirus est clairement distincte, malgré la forte conservation de séquence parmi le genre viral. Ces différentes conformations ne pouvaient pas être prédites par modélisation basée sur leur homologie. Les structures montrent qu'elles gardent un « core » trimérique commun formé par le domaine I, la base du domaine II et le domaine III. Cependant le sous-domaine distal du domaine II, avec la boucle de fusion, adopte des conformations différentes (fermée, intermédiaire et ouverte) en fonction des virus, et interagit avec le "stem" qui connecte les segments TM. Conclusion: Nos résultats montrent l'importance de conduire des études structurales comparatives sur des virus similaires, et permettent d'expliquer des résultats d'inhibition de la fusion membrane non-concordants entre ces virus. Background: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), Semliki Forest virus (SFV) and Sindbis virus (SINV) are mosquito-borne alphaviruses. CHIKV has caused important outbreaks of severe disease during the last decade. Alphavirus are enveloped viruses that enter cells via low-pH triggered fusion in the endocytic pathway. The envelope protein E1 is a class II fusion protein and is responsible for driving membrane fusion for entry. The E1 ectodomain is folded into three structured domains (I, II and III), arranged as a rod with domain I at the center and domains II and III at either side. Domain II is elongated and exposes a hydrophobic "fusion loop" at its distal end. The fusion loop inserts into the target membrane, and a subsequent conformational change brings the fusion loop into proximity with the viral-membrane-anchored segment of the protein, via a relocation of the C-terminal domain III and the downstream "stem" segment, which connects to the viral trans-membrane anchor at the C-terminal end. This results in a "hairpin" conformation of the protein that draws the two membranes together for fusion. Methods : We made the recombinant E1 ectodomain using a mutant of the fusion loop, to allow for solubility, and determined the crystal structures under acidic conditions, in their trimeric hairpin conformation. Results : Our work shows that the post-fusion trimers of E1 from the three alphaviruses studied adopt a strikingly different conformation in spite of their high sequence similarity, a change that could not have been predicted by homology modeling from the available structure of E1 from Semliki Forest virus truncated of part of the stem. They show that while the internal trimer core, composed of domain I and the domain II base, is maintained in the same conformation, and domain III flips to the sides of the trimer to form the hairpin in the same way, the downstream "stem" region and the domain II "tip" pack in a different way, resulting in three alternative forms: closed, intermediate, and open, depending on the virus. Conclusion : E1 is a very conserved protein in alphaviruses, and the available structure was believed to be a model for all alphaviruses. Our results highlight the importance of carrying out comparative structural studies, and help explain contradictory results in the use of domain III and the stem region for inhibition of the fusion step with different alphaviruses. These results will have an impact to better understand the conformational change and the role of the "stem" region for membrane fusion, and allow the development of fusion inhibitors in the future

In South Africa (SA), the arboviruses West Nile virus (WNV), Wesselsbron virus (WSLV), Sindbis virus (SINV) and Middelburg virus (MIDV) are considered the most important flavi- and alphaviruses. Clinical presentation and importance of these viruses as animal pathogens in SA remains ambiguous. Although widely endemic in SA, lineage 2 (L2) WNV has rarely been associated with cases of neurological disease and was therefore assumed to be non-pathogenic. However, fatal encephalitis in a foal was diagnosed as L2 WNV in SA, 1996, leading to the thought that L2 cases were possibly being missed. As the above-mentioned arboviruses have the same transmission vectors, Culex mosquitoes for WNV and SINV and Aedes mosquitoes for WSLV and MIDV, co-screening for these viruses is important. We hypothesise that horses could be used as sentinels for virus activity in SA and cases of unexplained neurological disease or fever in animals overlooked, rather than being non-existent. To this end, the study aimed to screen horses displaying unexplained neurological disease or fever with Flavivirus family-specific RT-PCR. Additionally, samples were screened with an Alphavirus family-specific RT-PCR to determine whether co-circulating viruses could be responsible for neurological symptoms in horses. The results would aid in establishing the molecular epidemiology and disease description of each virus, virus distribution and disease seasonality in SA. In total 261 clinical specimens were collected from horses displaying these symptoms (2008 - 2010). Samples were screened with Flavi- and Alphavirus differential diagnostic RT-PCR and acute serum was screened for WNV-IgM and neutralizing antibodies. Serological screening (WNV haemagglutination inhibition, WNV IgG and/or WNV neutralization) identified 62 suspected WNV cases while 34 cases could be confirmed by RT-PCR (16/34), WNV IgM and neutralization assays (18/34) and virus isolation. Neurological disease made up 91% (31/34) of the cases, mortality was calculated at 44% (15/34). Phylogenetically 12/16 RT-PCR positives grouped with L2 SA strains. The first detection of L1 WNV and horse-associated abortion in SA was reported when a pregnant mare aborted her foetus in Ceres, Western Cape. The first cases of WSLV-associated disease in horses were identified by sequencing Flavivirus RT-PCR positive products from 2 horses displaying severe neurological disease; one being fatal. This suggests missed cases in the past. To elucidate virulence factors of WSLV, a human encephalitic strain AV259, was subjected to Roche FLX454 full-genome sequencing and compared to a previously sequenced febrile strain (H177). Several structural amino acid changes occurred in proteins NS2A, NS4B and NS5 of AV259; necessary for Flavivirus replication. Phylogenetically AV259, clinical horse strains and WSLV strains previously isolated from animals, humans and arthropods were similar. Additionally and in concurrence with other studies, WSLV clusters with Sepik virus (SEPV) within the YFV group of the Flaviviridae family. Alphavirus screening identified 17 cases; 6/17 SINV and 11/17 MIDV. SINV-WNV co-infections resulted in fatal neurological disease; remaining SINV cases recovered after displaying fever and/or mild neurological disease. MIDV symptoms varied from “three-day-stiffness” to severe neurological symptoms, with 2 fatalities. Co-infections with equine encephalosis and Shuni virus were identified. MIDV strains identified in this study were phylogenetically distinct from older strains. Results highlight the use of horses as sentinels for virus activity and suggest that these arboviruses may have been previously missed as horse pathogens in Africa. These viruses should be considered as the aetiological agents in animals displaying unexplained neurological or hepatic disease, fevers or abortions. Awareness of flavi- and alphaviruses and the disease manifestation they may have in horses was illustrated. These findings suggest that a WNV vaccine may be beneficial for horses in SA.

Arthritogenic alphaviruses such as Ross River virus (RRV) and chikungunya (CHIKV), Sindbis-like viruses (SINV), Barmah Forest virus (BFV), ) Mayaro virus (MAYV) and o’nyong-nyong virus (ONNV) are responsible for outbreaks of debilitating rheumatic joint disease during infection. CHIKV is typically notorious in central Africa, India, South-East Asia and Europe, while other alphaviruses such as RRV and BFV are endemic to Australia. In Australia, there are approximately 4000 cases of RRV reported annually, while the number of CHIKV cases continues to rise in epidemic regions. In 2014, CHIKV invaded several Caribbean islands in the Americas, with a current estimated 1.1 million autochthonous transmission cases as of 16th January 2015. During disease outbreak, more than 95% of patients experience intense persisting pain, generally in knees and the joints of extremeties. Despite the high occurrence rheumatic joint symptoms during alphavirus infection, there are limited studies on the skeletal pathologies due to the lack of routine clinical surveillance. Hence, very little is known about the impact of alphavirus infection on the bone remodelling process and warrants further investigation.

Högbegåvade barn och ungdomar har uppmärksammats mer i Sverige de senaste åren. Litteraturen presenterar divergerande uppfattningar kring om hög begåvning främst är en skyddsfaktor eller en sårbarhetsfaktor. Syftet med föreliggande studie var att undersöka högbegåvade ungdomars upplevelser av sina liv och sin vardag. Tio högbegåvade tonåringar intervjuades och materialet bearbetades med induktiv tematisk analys med deduktiva inslag som resulterade i ett övergripande huvudtema högbegåvade tonåringars energiflöde i en modell som kan utläsas ”Jag har stora energikällor och om jag får utlopp för energin i dessa genom intellektuell stimulans och gemenskap bidrar detta till god psykisk hälsa vilket i sin tur ger mer energi. Om energin hindras av t.ex. brist på intellektuell stimulans och gemenskap bidrar det till psykisk ohälsa och minskad energi.” Resultatet diskuteras utifrån betydelse för frigörande av potential och förbyggande av psykisk ohälsa.

Syftet med studien är att förstå hur skolkuratorerna skapar sin yrkesroll utifrån sina erfarenheter. Studien är en kvalitativ intervjustudie med en fenomenlogisk ansats.

I resultatet framgår det att skolkuratorerna värdesätter det enskilda samtalet med eleven. Samverkan på olika nivåer i samhället och kunskap om hur samhället fungerar beskrivs av skolkuratorerna som viktiga i arbetet med elever och föräldrar. Samarbetet i skolans arbetsgrupper har enligt skolkuratorerna en avgörande betydelse för handlingsutrymmet med eleverna.

Det förebyggande arbetet med eleverna är enligt skolkuratorerna viktigt. Att använda hjälpmedel som till exempel en trollstav kan hjälpa till i det förbyggande arbetet med elever. Skolkuratorerna beskriver att de använder olika teorier och metoder. Valet av vilka av dessa som är mest lämpliga i en viss situation styrs av vad skolkuratorn anser vara lämpligt i en specifik situation. Dessa kan även tillämpas tillsammans med av skolkuratorn egna utvecklade metoder och hjälpmedel som till exempel trollstaven.

I intervjuerna med skolkuratorerna beskriver de sin yrkesroll med entusiasm och professionalism. Det framgår även att de har olika syn på sitt arbete och sina arbetssätt. Vidareutbildning och möjlighet att ta del av vidare forskning uppskattas av skolkuratorerna. Kunskap om lagarna är enligt skolkuratorerna en viktig faktor för att känna sig trygg i sin egen yrkesroll. Det framgår också att skolkuratorerna ibland saknar någon att reflektera med trots att ett nätverk finns runt dem. De förväntningar som skolkuratorerna beskriver är att de vill ha en tydligare definierad lagstadgad skolkuratorstjänst, vilket de anser skulle tydliggöra förväntningarna på yrkesrollen.

Syftet med arbetet var att åskådliggöra innebörden av att vara i matematiksvårigheter och elevers syn på hur de hanterar sin vardag. Undersökningen utgår från ett elevperspektiv och ambitionen var att elevens egna tankar och känslor skulle komma fram. Jag har använt mig av en kvalitativ ansats med observationer och semistandardiserade intervjuer. För alla eleverna i studien påverkas vardagen och skolan av att de har svårigheter i matematik. Det är allt från att planera sina fritidsaktiviteter till att veta när ett arbete i skolan ska vara inlämnat. Detta gör att föräldrar måste hjälpa till i denna planering i stor utsträckning även nu när barnen är tonåringar och borde klara sig själva lite mer. Eleverna själva är ofta inte medvetna om sina strategier för att klara de svårigheter som uppstår på grund av matematiksvårigheterna. Föräldrarna kan dock berätta mer om hur dessa strategier tar sig ut. Känslorna inför matematiklektionerna är ofta en uppgivenhet, ska de misslyckas idag igen och de känner sig stressade inför att kanske inte uppnå målen. Lärarens bemötande spelar här en stor roll och ett icke positivt bemötande gör att eleverna upplever att de är till besvär för läraren. Det leder till att eleverna får ett svagt självförtroende och olustkänslor inför matematiken. I jämförelse med andra studier så upplever eleverna i min studie inte att de blir stämplade till följd av att de får särskilt stöd, utan tvärtom så är det en lättnad att gå till stödgruppen.


This study focuses on pupil’s view how they handle mathematics learning disabilities in their daily life. The study is from pupil’s point of view and the ambition was to capture the pupil’s own thoughts and feelings. Observations and interviews were carried out with three pupils, in the age of 13, and their parents. The results show that all three of the pupils have difficulty in their daily life due to the mathematics learning disabilities. They have different problems from to plan their free time to plan when schoolwork should be submitted. The result of this is that the parents have to plan for them, even now when they are teenager’s and should be able to handle things like this by themselves. The pupils are not aware of the strategies they use to cope with the difficulties in mathematics. However, their parents are able to explain the strategies their children have developed. The emotions the pupils feel when they think about math class are that they feel dejected and they are under stress with thoughts as “will I fail again today”. It is very important how the teacher do talk to the pupils and this will affect the pupil’s self-confidence and they develop discomfort to mathematics. This study, unlike some other studies, does not show that pupils feel uncomfortable because they have special support. Instead they feel relief in visiting the support group.

Syfte: Att undersöka hur sjuksköterskor på medicinska vårdavdelningar värderar sina arbetsuppgifter och hur de upplever sin psykosociala arbetsmiljö. Metod: En kvantitativ, komparativ tvärsnittsstudie. Enkäter delades ut till 57 sjuksköterskor på två medicinska vårdavdelningar på Akademiska sjukhuset. Resultat: Trettiofyra sjuksköterskor (60%) besvarade enkäten. Få sjuksköterskor upplevde sitt arbete som lugnt och rofyllt och flera sjuksköterskor uppgav att de sällan eller aldrig hinner med det som ska utföras under ett arbetspass. Sjuksköterskorna uppgav överlag att det är mycket viktigt att känna till sina patienters vitalparametrar. Den arbetsuppgift som påverkades mest av hög arbetsbelastning var dock att känna till sina patienters urinproduktion, vilket endast 17 sjuksköterskor (50%) uppgav att de hinner med. Den arbetsuppgift som flest antal sjuksköterskor (n=28, 82%) uppgav att de hinner med är att känna till sina patienters medvetandegrad, följt av att ronda med läkare (n=27, 79%). Den arbetsuppgift som flest sjuksköterskor uppgav att de inte hinner med var att ge sina patienter munvård (n=20, 59%), följt av att känna till hur mycket de har ätit (n=16, 47%). Sjuksköterskor som hade arbetat kortare än 2,5 år värderade vissa administrativa och patientnära arbetsuppgifter högre än sjuksköterskor som hade arbetat längre än 2,5 år.
Aim: To explore how nurses in medical wards evaluate their work and how they experience their psychosocial work environment. Method: A quantitative, comparative cross-sectional study. Questionnaires were distributed to 57 nurses on two medical wards at Akademiska hospital. Results: Thirtyfour nurses (60%) participated. Few nurses considered their work as calm and peaceful, and several nurses said they rarely or never had time to do the tasks that should be performed during a shift. The nurses generally stated that it’s very important to know patients' vital signs. The task that was most affected by high workload was to know patients' urine output, which only 17 nurses (50%) said they had time to check. The task that most nurses (n=28, 82%) said they had time for is to know patients' level of consciousness, followed by the physicians round  (n=27, 79%). The task that most nurses said that they did not have time for was to give patients oral care (n=20, 59%), followed by knowing how much patients have eaten (n=16, 47%). Nurses who had worked under 2,5 years valued certain administrative and patient-related duties higher than nurses who had worked over 2,5 years.

In this essay, Ralph C. Wood's religious-philosophical interpretation of LotR has been analyzed, with emphasis upon his conclusions about evil and sin in LotR. Some of Wood's claims about evil and sin in LotR have been applied upon the character Boromir, in order to show how sin is manifested as truth-transgression, pride, avarice, and misdirected love. A theoretical section is presented in order to define the concepts of sin, mimetic desire, and evil. The literary analysis focuses upon the character Boromir; the relevant works of literary scholas Ralph C. Wood and René Girard have been chosen as points of reference in this analysis. Attention is also given to an article by the historian Stephen Morillo, in the analysis of Norse pagan and Christian interpretations. It has been argued that a Christian reading of LotR, contrary to Morillo's standpoint, is possible.

But pardon, which takes away punishment, is contrary to punishment. Therefore, the venial is contrary to the nature of sin. But no specific difference dividing a genus is contrary to the genus. Therefore, the mortal and the venial cannot properly distinguish sin. Whoever turns inordinately, turns toward a transitory good and away from the immutable good, since in every movement, one who approaches one terminus recedes from the other. Therefore, whoever sins turns away from the immutable good. But this is to sin mortally. Therefore, whoever sins sins mortally. Therefore, there are not two kinds of sin: one mortal, the other venial.

This chapter develops two new nonlinear artificial higher order neural network models. They are sine and sine higher order neural networks (SIN-HONN) and cosine and cosine higher order neural networks (COS-HONN). Financial data prediction using SIN-HONN and COS-HONN models are tested. Results show that SIN-HONN and COS-HONN models are good models for some sine feature only or cosine feature only financial data simulation and prediction compared with polynomial higher order neural network (PHONN) and trigonometric higher order neural network (THONN) models.

Abstract We experimentally and theoretically confirm that residual stress within a diaphragm is critical in limiting the performance of diaphragm-based piezoelectric microphones even if the stress is low (around 50 MPa). We have fabricated and studied microphones with Al/parylene/ZnO/SiN2/poly-Si/SiN1 (from top to bottom) diaphragm. As the SiN1 supporting layer is removed layer by layer from the backside with CF4 plasma (in an RIE system), we measure both the sensitivity and center displacement of the microphone before and after each RIE etching of the SiN1 from the microphone diaphragm, and find the sensitivity increasing about 5–16 times with the best sensitivity reaching 11 μV/μbar from a mere 0.6 μV/μbar. The center displacement increases very moderately as the SiN1 layer thickness decreases from 0.8 to 0.2 μm. However, the center displacement starts to increase greatly as the SiN1 layer thickness goes below 0.2 μm, which compares with our theoretical analysis well. In the case of the SiN1 layer having compressive residual stress, the compressive stress can enhance the microphone sensitivity and center displacement to a certain extent.

Abstract In this work, an investigation of the heat sink performance employing sinusoidal microchannels embedded with pin fins was conducted. The effect of the sine wave frequency, the pin fins’ diameter, and the hydraulic diameter of the microchannel are studied. The results are quantified in terms of thermal resistance and pressure drop. The study was done using Reynolds numbers varying from 250 to 2000. As Reynolds number increases, the heat sink’s thermal resistance decreased while the pressure drop increased accordingly for all scenarios. The sinusoidal microchannels showed better performance — lower thermal resistance — but with the cost of higher pressure drop compared to the straight microchannel heat sink. The heat sink’s performance was improved by increasing the frequency, diameter of pin fins, and hydraulic diameter; however, this reduction in thermal resistance was associated with an increase in pressure drop. The reduction in thermal resistance of the different configurations of the sinusoidal microchannels was between 17% and 69% compared to the straight microchannel heat sink.

Анотація:
Um den zukünftigen Anforderungen ökologischer, ökonomischer und sozialer Nachhaltigkeit gerecht zur werden, müssen sich die technischen und sozialen Strukturen in Städten transformieren. Dazu ist die Entwicklung und Umsetzung von technologischen und sozialen Innovationen, sogenannten urbanen Innovationen, in einem Ökosystem mit vielen und diversen Akteuren notwendig. Etablierte Ansätze des Innovations- und des Projektmanagements sind aufgrund der komplexen Akteursstruktur nur partiell übertragbar. Ziel dieser Forschung ist es am Beispiel einer umfassenden empirischen Analyse von 107 Innovationsprojekten, die die Steigerung von Energieeffizienz und Reduktion von Kohlenstoffdioxidemissionen in bestehenden Quartieren in kleinen, mittleren und großen Städten in Deutschland zum Ziel hatten, zu zeigen, ob und wie Managementansätze in urbanen Innovationsprozessen angepasst werden müssen. Unsere Forschung zeigt, dass sich die untersuchten Innovationsprojekte größtenteils mit der energetischen Sanierung des Gebäudebestands und weniger mit der energieeffizienten Nutzung von Energie (d.h. der Entwicklung von Smart City Lösungen) beschäftigen. Weiterhin zeigt sich, dass der Erfolg von urbanen Innovationsprojekten nicht eindimensional messbar ist. Neben der Einhaltung von klassischen Projektzielen (Einhaltung von Budget-, Zeit und Inhaltszielen), sind Neuartigkeit und Umsetzungserfolg erstrebenswert. Unsere Forschung zeigt weiterhin, dass die Zusammenarbeit mit skeptischen Akteuren in allen Prozessphasen wesentlich für den Erfolg ist. Gerade die Einbindung von skeptischen Akteuren führt zu neuartigeren Lösungsalternativen und in gewissem Maße zu höherem Umsetzungserfolg.
