Abstract Seizure-related gene 6 (Sez6), Sez6-Like (Sez6L), and Sez6-Like 2 (Sez6L2) comprise a family of homologous proteins widely expressed throughout the brain that have been linked to neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders. Here, we use Sez6 triple knockout (TKO) mice, which lack all three Sez6 family proteins, to demonstrate that Sez6 family proteins regulate dendritic spine structure and cognitive functions, motor learning, and maintenance of motor functions across the lifespan. Compared to WT controls, we found that Sez6 TKO mice had impaired motor learning and their motor coordination was negatively affected from 6 weeks old and declined more rapidly as they aged. Sez6 TKO mice had reduced spine density in the hippocampus and dendritic spines were shifted to more immature morphologies in the somatosensory cortex. Cognitive testing revealed that they had enhanced stress responsiveness, impaired working, and spatial short-term memory but intact spatial long-term memory in the Morris water maze albeit accompanied by a reversal deficit. Our study demonstrates that the lack of Sez6 family proteins results in phenotypes commonly associated with neuropsychiatric disorders making it likely that Sez6 family proteins contribute to the complex etiologies of these disorders.

Abstract In the past year, four antibody–drug conjugates (ADC) were approved, nearly doubling the marketed ADCs in oncology. Among other attributes, successful ADCs optimize targeting antibody, conjugation chemistry, and payload mechanism of action. Here, we describe the development of ABBV-011, a novel SEZ6-targeted, calicheamicin-based ADC for the treatment of small cell lung cancer (SCLC). We engineered a calicheamicin conjugate that lacks the acid-labile hydrazine linker that leads to systemic release of a toxic catabolite. We then screened a patient-derived xenograft library to identify SCLC as a tumor type with enhanced sensitivity to calicheamicin ADCs. Using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data from primary and xenograft SCLC samples, we identified seizure-related homolog 6 (SEZ6) as a surface-expressed SCLC target with broad expression in SCLC and minimal normal tissue expression by both RNA-seq and IHC. We developed an antibody targeting SEZ6 that is rapidly internalized upon receptor binding and, when conjugated to the calicheamicin linker drug, drives potent tumor regression in vitro and in vivo. These preclinical data suggest that ABBV-011 may provide a novel treatment for patients with SCLC and a rationale for ongoing phase I studies (NCT03639194).

β-site amyloid precursor protein-cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1) is considered a therapeutic target to combat Alzheimer’s disease by reducing β-amyloid in the brain. To date, all clinical trials involving the inhibition of BACE1 have been discontinued due to a lack of efficacy or undesirable side effects such as cognitive worsening. The latter could have been the result of the inhibition of BACE at the synapse where it is expressed in high amounts. We have previously shown that prolonged inhibition of BACE interferes with structural synaptic plasticity, most likely due to the diminished processing of the physiological BACE substrate Seizure protein 6 (Sez6) which is exclusively processed by BACE1 and is required for dendritic spine plasticity. Given that BACE1 has significant amino acid similarity with its homolog BACE2, the inhibition of BACE2 may cause some of the side effects, as most BACE inhibitors do not discriminate between the two. In this study, we used newly developed BACE inhibitors that have a different chemotype from previously developed inhibitors and a high selectivity for BACE1 over BACE2. By using longitudinal in vivo two-photon microscopy, we investigated the effect on dendritic spine dynamics of pyramidal layer V neurons in the somatosensory cortex in mice treated with highly selective BACE1 inhibitors. Treatment with those inhibitors showed a reduction in soluble Sez6 (sSez6) levels to 27% (elenbecestat, Biogen, Eisai Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan), 17% (Shionogi compound 1) and 39% (Shionogi compound 2), compared to animals fed with vehicle pellets. We observed a significant decrease in the number of dendritic spines with Shionogi compound 1 after 21 days of treatment but not with Shionogi compound 2 or with elenbecestat, which did not show cognitive worsening in clinical trials. In conclusion, highly selective BACE1 inhibitors do alter dendritic spine density similar to non-selective inhibitors if soluble (sSez6) levels drop too much. Low-dose BACE1 inhibition might be reasonable if dosing is carefully adjusted to the amount of Sez6 cleavage, which can be easily monitored during the first week of treatment.

3002 Background: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) has a dismal prognosis and new therapies are urgently needed. SEZ6 is a transmembrane protein expressed in SCLC tumors that may be used as a therapeutic target. ABBV-011 is an antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) targeting SEZ6 with a calicheamicin payload, which has shown antitumor activity in preclinical models of SCLC. Preliminary results from the monotherapy dose-escalation and -expansion cohorts of the first-in-human ABBV-011 study are presented. Methods: Phase 1, open-label, multicenter study (NCT03639194) of ABBV-011 alone or in combination with budigalimab, a programmed cell death 1 inhibitor. Primary objectives were to assess the safety and tolerability and to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and/or recommended phase 2 dose of ABBV-011. Adults (≥18 years) with relapsed/refractory SCLC (1–3 lines of prior therapy) were enrolled. Dose escalation was guided by Bayesian continual reassessment method. ABBV-011 was administered intravenously at doses from 0.3 to 2.0 mg/kg once every 3 weeks. Dose expansion was conducted in SEZ6-selected patients. Results: At data cutoff on August 22, 2022, 99 patients were treated with ABBV-011 monotherapy. Median age was 63 years (range, 41–79), 50% of patients were male, and 68% had received ≥2 prior therapies. ABBV-011 ADC pharmacokinetics were approximately dose-proportional with an elimination half-life of 4.6 days across the dose range of 0.3–2.0 mg/kg. In dose escalation (n=26), 1 patient had a dose-limiting toxicity of grade (G) 3 fatigue at 2.0 mg/kg. We report safety and efficacy results for 40 patients in the dose-expansion 1.0-mg/kg ABBV-011 cohort. Median duration of treatment was 12 weeks (range, 1.9–63.3). Treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) occurred in 39 (98%) patients, the most frequent being fatigue (48%), nausea (45%), anorexia (38%), thrombocytopenia (38%), and vomiting (35%). G3 TEAEs occurred in 18 (45%) patients, the most frequent being fatigue, thrombocytopenia, and neutropenia (10% each); 1 G4 TEAE of dyspnea was reported. Seven patients died due to malignant neoplasm/disease progression (n=6) or respiratory distress (n=1); none were related to ABBV-011. Hepatotoxicity was observed, including G≥2 TEAEs of hyperbilirubinemia (18%), increased gamma-glutamyltransferase (8%), ascites (5%), veno-occlusive liver disease (3%), and portal hypertension (3%). Confirmed objective response rate was 25% (10 partial responses [PR]), with median duration of response of 4.2 months (95% CI: 2.6, 6.7). Clinical benefit rate (CBR) was 65% (10 PR and 16 stable disease) and CBR lasting >12 weeks was 43%. The median progression-free survival was 3.5 months. Conclusions: The MTD was not reached and ABBV-011 was well tolerated at 1.0 mg/kg with promising antitumor activity observed. Further evaluation of ABBV-011 is ongoing. ABSTRACT Special economic zones (SEZs) and regional trade agreements (RTAs) are frequently used by states as policy tools to promote economic development. As SEZs and RTAs overlap in geographical coverage and regulation areas and are implemented in parallel, they could create profound synergies. As there is no specialized international legal framework for SEZ regulation, and national SEZ laws seldom touch upon the synergy issue, SEZ regulation is largely left to RTAs at the international level. Yet, existing SEZ-related provisions in RTAs almost exclusively focus on trade in goods and appear insufficient in addressing the synergy issue—especially ‘new synergies’ created by ‘advanced SEZs’ and ‘deep RTAs’. To properly address the synergy issue, states should treat SEZ policy-making and RTA rule-making in a coordinated way and consider adopting a regional or multilateral approach in SEZ regulation.

This study focuses on the development and influence of special economic zones (SEZs), examining factors such as enterprise competitiveness, main industries, supply chain relationships, and the development environment of the zones. The lack of a consistent framework for assessing the performance and impact of SEZs has been a challenge in research. To address this, the paper employs Porterʼs Diamond Model to analyze the factors that contribute to the development and influence of SEZs, suggesting that this model can serve as a comprehensive framework for future SEZ research. The existing research on SEZs in developing countries is found to be inadequate. However, the SEZs established in Cambodia through collaborations with China and Japan have played a significant role in the countryʼs rapid economic growth. By examining two specific cases — the Japanese-invested Phnom Penh SEZ and the Chinese-invested Sihanoukville SEZ — this study identifies common operational challenges faced by developing countries in establishing SEZs. Furthermore, by exploring different collaboration models and assessing the impacts on local communities, this research offers valuable insights for policymakers and international investors in their decision-making processes.

Special economic zones (SEZs) play a significant role in global, national and regional trade flows. Given the insufficient number of empirical contributions regarding firm-level consequences of operation in SEZs, an analysis in which implications for firms’ standings is undertaken. With the use of different estimation approaches, applied to a unique dataset comprising 155 SEZs firms and 155 non-SEZs firms (matched sample) obtained from various sources, the author investigates if SEZs firms obtain a competitive advantage through higher productivity compared to non-SEZs firms. The results prove that SEZ firms differ in this regard. However, the sign of its contribution is conditioned by the type of productivity analysed. Special economic zones (SEZs) are important in Laos due to their ability to attract foreign investment, realize industrialization, and promote economic globalization. Based on Laos’ SEZs in operation, this study explored land-use intensity, structural evolution and land-use efficiency in Laos’ SEZs via the land-use dynamic degree, information entropy, super-efficiency data envelopment analysis (DEA) and gray relational analysis (GRA). The study determined that the total land-use area in Laos’ SEZs continuously increased from 2014 to 2020. The land-use intensity changes in the SEZs can be divided into three types, i.e., high intensity, medium intensity and low intensity, and most SEZs belonged to the medium-intensity type. The proportion of land used in production systems in Laos’ SEZs increased the most, and the proportion of infrastructure land notably decreased. The overall information entropy of the land-use structure exhibited an initial downward and then an upward trend. In 2018, the land-use efficiency in the Savan-Seno SEZ, Vientiane Industrial and Trade Area, Dongphosy SEZ, and Golden Triangle SEZ was relatively optimal. The basic factors of the industrial space and the factors reflecting international cooperation attributes were highly related to the land-use efficiency in Laos’ SEZs.

Salmonella Enteritidis SE86 tem sido a principal responsável por surtos de salmonelose no Rio Grande do Sul, desde 1999. Essa bactéria apresenta várias características que a diferencia de outros sorovares de Salmonella, dentre elas a capacidade de produzir biossurfactante. Porém, a caracterização desse composto e o motivo pelo qual ele é produzido ainda não foram investigados. Assim, esse estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar o biossurfactante produzido por S. Enteriditis SE86 e verificar algumas de suas prováveis funções, como por exemplo, a influência desse composto na aderência e na resistência a desinfetantes, em folhas de alface. A produção de biossurfactante por S. Enteriditis SE86 foi avaliada em caldo infusão cérebro e coração (BHI), em meio mínimo e em folhas de alface. Foram realizados testes para caracterização do composto e S. Enteritidis SE86, com e sem biossurfactante, foi inoculada em folhas de alface, a fim de avaliar a influência do biossurfactante na aderência e resistência da bactéria a diversos métodos de desinfecção de vegetais folhosos. Os resultados demonstraram que o maior índice de emulsificação (IE24: 62,95% após 72 horas) foi produzido em caldo BHI, mas a bactéria também foi capaz de produzir biossurfactante em meio mínimo (IE24: 46% após 46 h) e em contato com as folhas de alface (IE24: 52,15% após 120h). Os testes de caracterização do demonstraram que o biossurfactante é um composto polimérico que apresenta estabilidade em diferentes pH, temperatura e salinidade. O biossurfactante aumentou a aderência de S. Enteritidis SE86 (4,1 LogUFC/cm2 para 7,3 Log UFC/cm2 após 60 minutos) e contribuiu para o aumento da resistência do patógeno na superfície das folhas de alface para todos os sanitizantes testados.
Salmonella Enteritidis SE86 has been recognized for outbreaks of salmonellosis in Rio Grande do Sul-RS since 1999. This bacteria shows several characteristics that differ it from other serovars, as its ability to produce biosurfactant. However, the characterization of this compound and the reason why its produced have not been investigated yet. The present study aimed to characterize the biosurfactant produced by S. Enteritidis SE86 and to check some of their probable functions, as checking the influence of this compound in the adherence and resistance of food pathogen on lettuce leaves. The biosurfactant production by S. Enteritidis SE86 was evaluated in Brain Heart Infusion broth (BHI), in minimal medium and on lettuce leaves. Several tests were taken to characterize the compound produced and S. Enteritidis SE86 with and without biosurfactant, was inoculated on lettuce leaves to evaluate the influence of biosurfactant in adherence and resistance to several bacterial disinfection methods of leafy vegetables. The results showed that the more emulsification index (IE24: 62.95% after 72 hours) was produced in BHI broth, but S.Enteritidis SE86 was also able to produced biosurfactants in minimal medium (IE24: 46% after 46 hours) and on lettuce leaves (IE24: 52.15% after 120 hours). The characterization tests showed that the biosurfactant is a polymeric compound which is stable at different pH, temperature and salinity. The biosurfactant increased adherence of S. Enteritidis SE86 (4.1 LogUFC / cm2 to 7.3 log CFU / cm2 after 60 minutes) and contributed to increasing pathogen resistance on surface of lettuce leaves for all tested sanitizers.

Lo scopo di questo lavoro è uno studio filogenetico delle specie di Allium appartenenti alla sez. Codonoprasum basato sulla comparazione di dati morfologici e molecolari (nrDNA e cpDNA). I principali dati morfologici sono stati analizzati tramite il software NTSYSpc usando l analisi UPGMA. Il lavoro è stato condotto analizzando 3 differenti markers genetici che normalmente vengono usati nelle analisi filogenetiche: ITS, sbA-trnH e rbcL. Sono stati analizzati 95 campioni,provenienti da diverse stazioni dell area mediterranea, attraverso estrazione, amplificazione e sequenziamenti del materiale genetico. Le sequenze geniche ottenute sono state processato tramite il software Paup 4.0 usando il criterio della massima parsimonia. Gli alberi filogenetici ottenuti sono stati commentati e comparati con le attuali classificazioni del gen. Allium sez. Codonopraum. Da questo studio emergono nuove e interessanti relazioni filogenetiche tra le specie di Allium della sez. Codonoprasum

In eukaryotic cells, membrane-bound vesicles carry cargo between intracellular compartments, to and from the cell surface, and to the extracellular environment. Many conserved families of proteins are required for properly localized vesicle fusion, including the multi-subunit tethering complexes and the SNARE complexes. These protein complexes work together to promote proper vesicle fusion in other trafficking pathways. Contrary to these other pathways, our lab previously suggested that the exocyst subunit Sec6, a component of the exocytosis-specific tethering complex, inhibited Sec9:Sso1 SNARE complex assembly due to interactions in vitro with the SNARE protein Sec9 (Sivaram et al., 2005). My goal for this project was to test the hypothesis that Sec6 inhibited SNARE complex assembly in vivo. I therefore chose to generate Sec6:Sec9 loss-of-binding mutants, and study their effect both in vitro and in vivo. I identified a patch of residues on Sec9 that, when mutated, are sufficient to disrupt the novel Sec6-SNARE interaction. Additionally, I found that the previous inhibitory role for Sec6 in SNARE assembly was due to a data mis-interpretation; my re-interpretation of the data shows that Sec6 has a mild, if any, inhibitory effect on SNARE assembly. My results suggest a potential positive role for Sec6 in SNARE complex assembly, similar to the role observed for other tether-SNARE interactions.

Additionally, I found that the previous inhibitory role for Sec6 in SNARE assembly was due to a data mis-interpretation; my re-interpretation of the data shows that Sec6 has a mild, if any, inhibitory effect on SNARE assembly. My results suggest a potential positive role for Sec6 in SNARE complex assembly, similar to the role observed for other tether-SNARE interactions.

Ce manuscrit est consacré à la synthèse et la caractérisation de nouveaux matériaux d'oxyde à base de sélénium dans les états d’oxydation +4 ou +6. Les types structuraux rencontrés parmi les 33 oxy sélénites minéraux montrent une diversité structurale étonnante, et couvrent le champ des dimensionnalités 0D à 3D, offrant ainsi des potentialités inexploitées en termes des propriétés physiques. Cette thèse a visé la synthèse de l’étude de nouveaux composés du Se, en utilisant des méthodes de synthèse essentiellement inspirées des conditions de croissance des minéraux. Les informations basées sur l’assemblage de briques élémentaires originales dans des architectures structurales ont été déduites et comparées aux données de la littérature sur des phases proches. Lors de ce travail, notre approche « géo-inspirée » innovante été appliquée afin d'obtenir de nouveaux polytypes complexes. Nous avons donc utilisé des procédés simulant les conditions de croissance des minéraux. En termes de description, nous avons également utilisé soit le modèle « standard » basé sur l’examen des structures cristallines en termes de coordinations de cations, soit des outils plus modernes basés sur l’assemblage de tétraèdres anions-centrés développée par l'école de la cristallographie de Saint-Pétersbourg et par le groupe de chimie du solide de l’UCCS, à Lille, et ce dans les cas où l'interprétation structurale traditionnelle ne reflète pas les principes de base de la cristallochimie. Finalement, plusieurs systèmes chimiques métal-oxyde avec du Se4+/6+ et divers métaux (Cu+/2+, Ni2+, Co2+, V4+/5+, Mn2+, Fe3+, Pb2+, Bi3+, U6+) ont été étudiés dans le cadre de ce manuscrit. This work deals with the synthesis and characterization of novel oxide materials containing selenium in the oxidation states of +4 or +6. The structural types occurring in 33 known oxoselenite minerals have an amazing variety, and cover the whole field from 0D to 3D frameworks, which offer unexploited potentialities in terms physical properties. This thesis aims to synthetize and investigate new Se based compounds, essentially using methods inspired by mineralogical processes. Information based on original building units assembled into original architectures have been deduced and compared to related inorganic phases of the literature. In the present study, our innovative so-called “geo-inspired” approach is applied in order to obtain complex novel crystalline compounds. This approach assumes emulation and modelling of natural crystal growth processes. Herein, we used either a traditional descriptive procedure based on consideration of the crystal structures in terms of coordinations of cations, or the modern theory of anion-centered tetrahedra developed by the St. Petersburg school of crystallography and the UCCS group of solid-state chemistry in Lille, in cases when the traditional structural interpretation does not reflect basic principles of crystal chemistry. Thus, several metal-oxide chemical systems with Se4+/6+ and various metals (Cu+/2+, Ni2+, Co2+, V4+/5+, Mn2+, Fe3+, Pb2+, Bi3+, U6+) were studied in the context of the present work. The thesis contains results of synthetic procedures, and crystal chemical characterization of 39 new metal selenites, selenates, and selenite-selenates. The analogy of selenite groups with phosphites was also investigated. Main results are described with reference to more detailed publications given in the appendices

In just about 30 years, China has become one of the main actors on the international board, climbing the ladder and earning a sit among global superpowers. At the same time, it transformed into a global powerhouse in OFDI (Outgoing Foreing Direct Investment), a characteristic that is usually prerogative of countries in a more advanced development stage. This thesis will focus on China's SEZs in Africa. The first chapter will try to understand what were the conditions that allowed it to become a top 3 global investor. The second chapter will explore why these investments matter in the perspective of the "going out" strategy and the sino-african relationships. Finally, the SEZs will be analyzed both in a wider perspective to understand the process that brought to the creation of such zones and in a more specific, zone by zone, overview. The last chapter will serve as an assessment of the possible socio-economic effects on the host countries, highlighting present and future challenges.

AbstractThe container revolution in the last decades of the 20th century determined the arise of container ports. They further evolved in the so-called third-generation ports, becoming generators of value added due to the manipulation of goods in transit. The increase of value added in third-generation ports is amplified in core ports connected to TEN-T/RFC corridors, where Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and the three pillars of smartness (ICT, Transport and Energy) are present. The paper deals with time-series models for the estimation of economic impact of a SEZ in an underdeveloped region of EU. The test case is the Calabria region (Italy). SEZ in Calabria has its fulcrum in the industrial area close to the transhipment hub port of Gioia Tauro. The economic impacts of the SEZ were quantified through two variables: exports and employment of industrial firms settled in Calabria. The comparison of two scenarios (Do-Nothing scenario and SEZ) shows relevant positive impacts in the SEZ one. Future developments concern the calibration and validation of multi-variate time-series models from observations provided by worldwide SEZs.

AbstractThe Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a regulated area where industrial activities are facilitated and have many incentives in order to become more competitive and attractive. The establishment of a SEZ is the responsibility of the national government which provides a model based on specific measures to attract investment. The local administrations have to define a plan, according to the national model, for the development of the SEZs in order to respect and enhance the peculiarities of each area. The goal is to push the strategic connection among logistics, industry and ports through incentive packages, including fiscal and non-fiscal ones, in order to have strong repercussions on economic development.The impacts of the SEZs can be assessed in terms of sustainability: social, environmental and economic. In relation to economic sustainability, the paper proposes a general model developed to estimate the financial burdens borne by the regional and national administrations deriving from the establishment of the SEZ. The paper introduces a test case of Calabria Region to estimate the financial burdens necessary for the SEZ establishment in the Gioia Tauro macro-node, into the TEN-T core network and the RFC.

Their evolution is represented by the third-generation ports, playing a crucial role in the global supply chain, becoming generators of value added. One of the measures that facilitates the increase of value added in a third-generation ports is the Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The economic impacts of SEZs is amplified in smart ports, where the three pillars of smartness (ICT, Transport and Energy) are present, and in a core ports connected to TEN-T/RFC corridors. The paper describes the method and the application to quantify the indirect and induced economic impact of a SEZ inside a third-generation port in terms of employment by means of an aggregated model. A case study is reported considering a SEZ in an undeveloped UE region. The results are obtained from a comparative analysis of representative case studies of port impact studies, estimated by means of a specific class of econometric (input-output) models.

AbstractThe Gulf countries have shifted to a new development paradigm, pursuing economic diversification by constructing special economic zones (SEZs). By investing overseas, China has been involved in the development of SEZs in the Gulf region, especially since China proposed the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). In this chapter, through the analytical framework of New Structural Economics (NSE), I examine three projects of Chinese investments in the SEZs in the Gulf region — China-Oman Industrial Park in Duqm, the petrochemical and chemical fibre integrated project in Saudi Arabia’s Jazan City for Primary and Downstream Industries, and China-UAE Industrial Capacity Cooperation Demonstration Zone. By analysing how the projects grow and how they affect the development of the investment recipient countries, I argue that the “hard” and “soft” infrastructure provided by the recipient countries and the comparative advantages of the recipient countries have motivated the projects to grow. The three projects demonstrate the potential to contribute to the development of infrastructure in the SEZs where the projects are located and have assisted the investment recipient countries in striving for economic diversification and sustainable development.

Although China's Special Economic Zones (SEZs) have already been widely known, they are under-studied, and the existing literature is missing certain topics such as the study of official discourses on these SEZs. What this study attempts to address are these questions: Does the Chinese political discourse on SEZ development change in both the domestic and international contexts? How does the Chinese discourse adapt to the domestic and international audiences and adjust to their conjuncture? The authors search and analyze official five-year plans for discrepancies between discourses and interpretations from ministry to ministry, and between the Chinese and English versions of the official discourse. The aim is to introduce discourse analysis to this topic, contributing to the discussion a broader description and analysis of SEZ dynamics, as well as an overview of their adjustments in accordance with the ever-evolving Chinese political and economic projects.

SEZs in China have been considered a successful experience and an important tool not only to attract foreign investment in an ordered manner but also to stimulate economic growth, generate social benefits, and to experiment innovative policies. The country-specific approach, discarding a “one-size-fits-all” model, is one of the elements that enabled Chinese SEZs to thrive. Policy experimentation, a smaller level of risk aversion, if compared to developed countries, and a mixture of top-down and bottom-up decision processes between local and central governments reflect a dynamic environment attractive to developing nations. This attraction finds nourishment in the pragmatic international cooperation with Chinese characteristics. This chapter explores the role the Belt and Road Initiative can play in exporting the Chinese SEZ “model,” especially, in African countries. By scrutinising the adaptability of the Chinese “model” to different contexts, it tackles the potential accrued to SEZs' implementation in BRI nations in terms of the advancement of new policymaking procedures.

This chapter focuses on the locational aspect of the new wave of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in post-liberalization India. It argues that unlike the earlier Nehruvian era steel towns which aimed at locating new towns in economically backward regions of the country, the promoters of the new SEZs, and more broadly post-liberalization urban enclaved developments, are attracted to former agrarian regions that benefited from prior pre-liberalization investment. These regions have prior market linkages that are desirable to the new private capital; the agricultural land in these regions is also owned by organized agrarian constituencies belonging to regional dominant castes. As policymakers, search for new decentralized and market-oriented means for the transfer of land from agrarian constituencies to urban promoters and developers, the re-allocation of property control is erupting into volatile land-based social conflicts. By focusing on the case of the Khed SEZ in the Pune district in western Maharashtra, this chapter traces a form of ‘antagonistic cooperation’ where historically adversarial groups—firms and agrarian landowners, agrarian propertied classes and Adivasi labourers—come together briefly for a new experiment in land assembly for an SEZ. As productive agricultural land is transformed into new urban enclaves, the Khed Adivasis experience Janus-faced social change, where the locational politics of the new SEZ both generates a new politics of recognition but also exposes them to the new uncertainties of a market economy.

A kinetic model for NOx production has been developed to predict NOx emissions. The reaction scheme is a modified super-extended Zel’dovich mechanism (SEZM), which includes 43 reactions and 20 species instead of just the three reactions typically used in the extended Zel’dovich mechanism. The NOx emissions predicted by both mechanisms are compared using two separate models. First, a theoretical investigation of the two mechanisms is made for an SI engine using prescribed temperature and pressure histories. Then each of the two mechanisms is combined with a phenomenological combustion model for a single-cylinder Caterpillar 3400 series diesel engine to calculate the NOx emissions. The predictions from both mechanisms are compared with experimental results. It is shown that the SEZM can predict NOx emissions more accurately than the extended Zel’dovich mechanism. Results show that the SEZM increases the predicted NOx by about 25 percent. The difference between the two models is more pronounced for lean combustion, in which NO2 and NH play an important role in the NOx formation. In addition, the effects of several parameters on diesel engine NOx production are investigated. The super-extended Zel’dovich mechanism for NOx formation is expected to be more appropriate for lean combustion, such as in diesel or natural gas engines and other engines that typically operate at lean conditions.
