Анотація:
Bien que les poèmes de Saint-Denys Garneau aient attiré l’attention d’un bon nombre de traducteurs et de traductrices anglophones, les deux qui ont le mieux réussi sont F. R. Scott et John Glassco, deux poètes associés au groupe de McGill, lequel était actif à l’époque de Saint-Denys Garneau. Leur rapport avec le poète québécois sera abordé en deux volets. Dans un premier temps, je décris les contextes historiques reliés à l’émergence de la poésie de Saint-Denys Garneau. S’il a fallu plusieurs années pour que sa poésie soit dûment reconnue par les lecteurs francophones, son accueil par le milieu littéraire anglophone fut encore plus lent, et il est même frappant que ce dernier n’ait jamais accordé au poète le statut qui lui revient. En dépit du fait qu’une traduction complète de ses poésies par John Glassco soit disponible, son absence dans le monde littéraire anglophone serait due à la fois à ses traductions et à l’incapacité des lecteurs anglophones à comprendre sa poésie. Il y aurait une différence d’imaginaire entre les lecteurs canadiens et québécois. Pour éclaircir cette différence, je me sers, dans le second volet de la réflexion, de la distinction qu’établit Pascal entre l’esprit de géométrie et l’esprit de finesse, dont le premier caractériserait le lecteur canadien et le second, le lecteur québécois. Même si, en somme, Saint-Denys Garneau avait la bonne fortune de trouver une traduction vraiment réussie, ce qu’il n’a pas pour le moment, une telle traduction ne trouverait que peu de lecteurs.

An opinion piece by Ben Macintyre entitled ‘Sorry, Scott fans: noble death is so last century’ appeared inThe Times(London) on 20 September 2013. In this, Macintyre argued not only that Ernest Shackleton should be explicitly contrasted against his contemporary and rival Robert Falcon Scott, but that Shackleton should be found superior to Scott in virtually every way. It was a dispiriting piece, strongly suggesting that that the media's understanding of Scott has not greatly advanced since the savage, cod-psychological and often unsubstantiated attacks upon Scott's character and reputation in the 1970s–1990s. Sadly, all too often polar history is reduced to a zero-sum game where praise for Shackleton is directly proportional to insults directed at Scott.

Bevezetés: A súlyos férfi terheléses inkontinencia a radikális prostatectomia után kialakult leggyakoribb szövődmény, sebészi kezelésében „gold standard” a művi záróizom-beültetés. A készüléket dr. Brantley Scott fejlesztette ki és ültette be először 1972-ben, majd az évtizedek során számos fejlesztésen ment keresztül. A ma is használt formája 1982-ben került forgalomba AMS 800 néven, amely azóta több, mint 250 ezer esetben került beültetésre. Az irodalmi adatok alapján a leggyakoribb szövődmény magának az eszköznek a meghibásodása, uroinfekció, húgycsőlézió, illetve hibás méretválasztás. Ezekben az esetekben a műsphincter cseréje, illetve eltávolítása szükséges. A relatíve magas szövődményráta ellenére is a súlyos esetekben elsőként választandó műtéti terápiás megoldás, mivel a betegek 79%-ánál a kontinencia jelentős javulása érhető el. Betegek és módszerek: Munkacsoportunk által 2010 és 2022 között 21 betegnél került beültetésre AMS 800 műsphincter. Összefoglalónk célja az volt, hogy az általunk végzett beavatkozások szövődményeit összehasonlítsuk az irodalmi adatokkal. Eredmények: 21 beteg nyomon követését végeztük, 16 esetben radikális prostatectomia, míg 5 esetben transurethralis prosztatareszekció után történt AMS 800 beültetése. 6 beteg adjuváns irradiációban is részesült. Az esetek 9%-ában infekciós szövődményt észleltünk, emellett 9-9%-ban húgycsőatrófia, illetve húgycsőerózió került felismerésre. A készülék meghibásodását az esetek 19%-ában észleltük. Az adjuváns irradiáción átesett betegeknél a sebészei reintervenció szignifikánsan gyakrabban vált szükségessé. Következtetés: A jelentős és tartós kontinenciajavulás miatt a gyakori szövődmények ellenére a súlyos férfi terheléses inkontinencia kezelésében a műsphincter-implantáció a „gold standard” megoldás. A gyakori szövődményarány miatt ezen betegek rendszeres utánkövetése alapvető fontosságú.

As far back as 53 years ago, the adaptability of the common law to changing circumstances whereby new rights have been created by the courts, has been observed and accepted as a function of the judiciary. Scott L.J. in his dictum in Haseldine v. Daw stated: The common law has throughout its long history developed as an organic growth, at first slowly under hampering restrictions of legal forms of process, more quickly in Lord Mansfield's time, and in the last 100 years at an ever increasing rate of progress as new cases, arising under new conditions of society, of applied science and of public opinion, have presented themselves for solution.

The nature of high altitude precipitation and its effect on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.) was investigated. Scots pine and Sitka spruce are important British forestry species and the effect of acidic cloud on these has been inadequately investigated. At a field site in the Scottish Southern Uplands, impacted cloudwater was either collected from, or measured with a microelectrode in situ on, artificial polypropylene snoots which closely mimicked live shoots. Temporal variation of pH within cloud deposition events was strong and the potential for damage by acid clouds was seen to be high. Impacted cloudwater was also collected from, or measured in situ on, live shoots and the interchange of ions between shoots and cloudwater investigated. Leaching of basic cations was considerable but not sufficient to neutralize cloudwater acidity. Dry deposition on live shoots appeared to increase the acidity of impacted cloudwater on shoots. The change in pH of evaporating droplets was measured in situ with the microelectrode. Droplet acidity increased dramatically as a result of evaporation. The potential for damage by snow was investigated by collecting and analysing snowmelt. Ground snowpack showed an initial flush of ions (including H+) on melting, followed by a steep decline to very low ion concentrations. Meltwater from live shoots did not show this flush/decline but did exhibit higher acidity levels which were also related to the pathway of the snowmelt through the snowpack. A series of four glasshouse experiments were undertaken in which a system for applying simulated acid cloud (SAC) was developed. Six to eight-year-old Scots pine and Sitka spruce were subjected to SAC at pH 5.6, 3.0 and 2.5. Considerable leaching of Ca, Mg, K, NO~-N and PO~-P occurred and showed an increasing response to increasing acidity of SAC. Both extension growth and needle area declined with increasing acidity but the decline was statistically insignificant. Visible injury on Scots pine needles was limited to those subjected to SAC at pH 2.0. Sitka spruce damage occurred to a very small extent at pH 2.5 but was again largely restricted to pH 2.0. Artificial abrasion of needles did not increase susceptibility to acid damage. Acid damage generally progressed from tip to base and at the junction of the brown and green tissue a darker brown band formed. Tissue underlying brown areas was subject to cell collapse and underneath the dark bown band the extracellular spaces were filled with an unknown material and the cells had not collapsed. The structure of the epicuticular wax was not affected by SAC acidity and even over necrotic areas the crystalline wax remained intact. The functional integrity of the cuticle, investigated by measuring cuticular conductance and contact angles, was unaffected by SAC. Controlled experiments on the changing acidity of evaporating droplets took place with three-year-old Scots pine and Sitka spruce in a large wind-tunnel, again with the use of the microelectrode. Droplet acidity again increased dramatically evaporation and there was also a close relationship between the increase of acidity of the droplet and that predicted by a direct relationship to the amount of water evaporated. Scots pine and Sitka spruce thus appear to be resistant to direct effects of acid cloud at pH 3.0 which is the lowest generally encountered in the Scottish Southern Uplands. However acidity enhancement through evaporation, extreme pH values at the start or finish of cloud events and high acidity flushes at the start of snowmelt may all expose trees to pH levels approaching those causing direct damage. In addition, the nutrient budgeting of trees may be adversely affected and lead to long term reductions in growth.

Traditional micromechanical theories for the tensile strength of paper do not account for the tensile stiffness of paper, even though in practice tensile strength is closely coupled with tensile stiffness. Another problem is with the micromechanical input parameters, few of which have a precise meaning in real paper. Especially the interpretation of inter-fiber bonding is ambiguous. None of the existing theories connects tensile strength with an independently measurable value of bonding degree or bond strength. As a result, the conventional interpretation of tensile strength data is unreliable. In this paper we will present a “macromechanical” study that connects tensile strength with independently measured values of tensile stiffness and z-directional fracture energy (alternatively Scott bond or z-directional tensile index). The model expression agrees well with many – but not all – of the experimental datasets that we had available. The disagreements demonstrate that z-directional measurements do not capture some aspects of inter-fiber bonding that contribute to in-plane tensile strength.

Introdução: O feijão-caupi (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) popularmente conhecida como feijão-de-corda é uma cultura de grande importância para a população da região Nordeste do Brasil. É o alimento básico de milhares de pessoas, sendo considerado uma boa fonte de proteínas, vitaminas e minerais, dentre eles, o zinco. O zinco tem como função no nosso organismo: fortalecimento do sistema imunológico, atividade antioxidante e estimulante do desenvolvimento e crescimento. O zinco está sendo estudado na biofortificação, visando melhorar sua qualidade nutricional via melhoramento genético. Objetivos: Avaliar o teor de zinco no grão de populações F2 de feijão-caupi. Materiais e Métodos: Foram avaliadas 91 populações F2 do cruzamento BRS Xiquexique x MNC01-631F-15. As análises do teor de zinco foram realizadas no laboratório de Bromatologia da Embrapa Meio-Norte, em Teresina-PI. As amostras foram trituradas em moinho de bolas de zircônio para obter uma farinha, que depois foram submetidas à digestão nitro perclórica e leitura em espectrofotômetro de absorção atômica de chama. Foram realizadas análises de variância e as médias agrupadas pelo teste de Scott-Knott (p<0,05). Por meio do software Genes, foram realizadas as análises estatísticas. Resultados: O teste de Scott-Knott discriminou as médias das populações F2 em cinco grupos. O grupo A incluiu seis populações F2 (39, 48, 58, 77, 79 e 82), as de maiores médias, variando de 67,46 a 76,41 mg kg-1. O grupo B e o grupo C incluíram 45,05% e 38,46%, respectivamente das populações F2 e apresentaram médias para o teor de zinco intermediárias. O grupo E, alocou apenas as populações F2 27 e 93, com 35,64 e 30,33 mg kg-1, respectivamente, constituindo-se nas menores médias. Conclusão: As populações F2 resultantes do cruzamento BRS Xiquexique x MNC01-631F-15 apresentam alta variabilidade para o teor de zinco nos grãos, com as populações 39, 48, 58, 77, 79 e 82, apresentando grande potencial para gerar progênies biofortificadas em ciclos posteriores de seleção.

Fiber deformations and damage have a considerable influence on both fiber strength and network properties. Through their influence on the fiber network, they can also affect the way paper behaves during converting. Another aspect is their influence on end-use properties, again via their effect on the fiber network. Separating the effects of fiber deformations and damage is often difficult. We prepared pulps in the laboratory and subjected them to different treatments that change the two relatively independently in a controlled manner. We found that wet/dry zero-span fiber strength is not dependent on the deformation method or on the extent of the deformations. Neither pulp sheet density nor Scott bond bonding was greatly affected by the type or method of deformation. In the case of deformed pulps, the pulp sheet tensile properties were dependent on the extent of fiber deformation via fiber segment activation. The pulp that was damaged instead of deformed had fiber deformations to about the same extent as the deformed pulp but lower single fiber strength measured with wet/dry zero-span. It also had lower bonding ability and sheet density. The tear index for the unbleached damaged pulp was 20–25% higher than that of the reference pulps. Fiber deformations (curl and kinks) affect fiber network properties via the lack of fiber segment activation. However, they do not significantly influence fiber shrinkage potential (WRV) or fiber strength.

В статье изложены результаты работ по изучению агрофизических свойств различных корнезакрывающих субстратов, проанализировано их влияние на рост и развитие сеянцев сосны обыкновенной, выращиваемой в контейнерах в качестве посадочного материала для лесовосстановительных работ. Лесовосстановление посадочным материалом с закрытой корневой системой имеет ряд преимуществ по сравнению с традиционными технологиями. Однако данная технология требует решения некоторых задач с целью оптимизации процессов выращивания сеянцев. Одним из проблемных моментов является выбор оптимальных по своим как агрохимическим, так и агрофизическим свойствам субстратов. В настоящее время большое внимание уделяется химической составляющей корнезакрывающих субстратов, когда агрофизические свойства учитываются в меньшей степени, но именно эти свойства субстратов изначально определяют характер развития корневой системы сеянцев, а следовательно, и всей вегетативной части растения. Химическая составляющая может меняться в процессе выращивания посадочного материала путем внесения удобрений. Агрофизические же свойства поменять в процессе выращивания невозможно без непосредственного вмешательства, что негативно скажется на самом росте растений, поэтому следует изначально придерживаться рекомендуемых агрофизических свойств субстрата, которые позволят получить высококачественный посадочный материал. Наши исследования направлены на определение влияния плотности сложения субстрата на развитие сеянцев сосны обыкновенной. Для этого были изучены варианты субстратов на основе верхового торфа, в которых выращены сеянцы сосны обыкновенной. Плотность сложения определялась с помощью оборудования Стереопикнметр . По результатам исследований можно сделать вывод, что наиболее оптимальные показатели плотности сложения субстрата в контейнерах, которые дали наилучшие результаты по биометрическим параметрам самих сеянцев, находятся в диапазоне 0,10-0,17 г/см3 . The article describes the research results into agrophysical properties of various root covering substrates, their influence on the growth and development of the containerized Scots pine seedlings as a planting stock for reforestation. This method has a number of advantages in comparison with the traditional planting method. However, it requires overcoming certain problems in order to optimize the processes of seedlings growing. One of the problems is the choice of substrate optimal in agrochemical and agrophysical properties. Nowadays, the chemical components of root covering substrates are of vital importance unlike the agrophysical properties, which are considered to a lesser extent. However, these are the agrophysical properties of substrates, which determine the development of seedling root system and, therefore, all the vegetative part of a plant. The chemical component can change while growing the planting stock by means of fertilizers application. The agrophysical properties cant be changed without the immediate intervention that will negatively affect the growth of plants. Therefore, it is necessary to adhere to the initially recommended ag- 43 rophysical properties of substrate, which will make it possible to grow a high-quality planting stock. The research aims to define the influence of bulk density of substrate on the development of Scots pine seedlings. For this purpose different substrates based on bog peat have been examined, the seedlings of Scots pine have been grown in these substrates. Bulk density of substrates was calculated with Stereopeakmeter. The carried out research has proved that the most optimal indicators of bulk density of substrate in containers that showed the best results on biometric parameters of seedlings were varying between 0.10 and 0.17 g/cm.

Abstract Due to its excellent stiffness, thermal stability and low density, silicon carbide (SiC) is an excellent candidate for fabrication of lightweight substrates for space mirrors in telescopes and satellites. However, the strong Si-C covalent bond induces high thermal stability and mechanical strength which makes it difficult to manufacture dense SiC. Other ceramic mirror materials such as Cordierite (CO720) by Kyocera® and Spodumene (ZERODUR®) by Schott® are characterized by their light weight, near zero thermal expansion coefficient and excellent thermal properties. However, mirrors made of cordierite or spodumene have relatively low stiffness and unsatisfactory thermal conductivity. We hypothesize that composites made of SiC-Cordierite and SiC-Spodumene can serve as better mirror substrates characterized by high stiffness, high thermal conductivity and improved thermomechanical stability. The present study reports on the synthesis and characterization of SiC-Cordierite (SiC-Cord) and SiC-Spodumene (SiC-Spod) using powder metallurgy method. The densification and thermomechanical stability of the SiC-mineral composites are enhanced by a novel in situ mineralization mechanism at the interface between the SiC and mineral binders between 800 °C and 1200 °C. The densities of SiC-Cord and SiC-Spod composites were 2.74 g/cc and 2.61 g/cc, respectively, while the thermal conductivities were 6.737 W/m. K and 3.281 W/m. K, respectively. Polishing the SiC-Cord with SiC grit numbers 400–1200 and diamond/silica slurry resulted in a mirror surface with an average roughness of 2.32 nm on SiC particles. The nano indentation stiffness of the polished SiC-Cordierite composite measured 239.9 ± 20.6 GPa. The stiffness of the SiC-Cord composite is superior to that of pure cordierite (140 GPa) or Zerodur (80 GPa). The average Vickers hardness of SiC-Cordierite was 8.12 ± 4.5 GPa which was superior to that of Zerodur (6.08 GPa) and comparable to that of pure cordierite (8–8.5 GPa). The composite samples demonstrated high thermal shock resistance as indicated by their comparable compressive strength and dimensional stability before and after quenching from 1200 °C to room temperature in water. Taken altogether, the superior thermomechanical properties of SiC-Cordierite and SiC-Spodumene suggest their suitability for mirrors in space-based telescopes.
