Повний текст джерелаNot only does the literary genre of “climate fiction” or “cli-fi” recount the disastrous consequences that climate change can generate, but it also offers the possibility of rethinking our social system to avoid environmental disaster. This research explores the links between environmental degradation and the emergence of disease in post-apocalyptic climate fiction as well as analysing the new interspecific communities described. The English-language corpus of contemporary works is composed of: Always Coming Home (Le Guin, 1985), Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents (Butler, 1993 - 1998), The Ice People (Gee, 1998) and the MaddAddam trilogy (Atwood, 2003-2013). These novels are analysed in comparison with Mary Shelley's seminal novel The Last Man (1826), drawing on ecocritical and ecofeminist studies, narratology, anthropological and sociological theories. Through the lens of the interdisciplinary theory of chaos, the study of the corpus is developed through: 1) an analysis of time in the novels; 2) an exploration of climate, ecosystems and plague; 3) an investigation of the futuristic communities/societies depicted. The results show that post-apocalyptic novels promote intersectionality and non-linearity, in terms of form and themes: narratives, ecosystems and societies are profoundly intertwined and influence one another at all levels

Повний текст джерелаThe post-realist fiction deviates from three conditions of realism : (1) causal homogeneity and (2) coreferential relation between the fictional world and the real world, (3) narrative reliability assured by modal distinction between the actual and the non-actual in fiction. The deviation from (1) yields the fantastic, the magical realism without hesitation, and the historiographic metafiction rewriting the history. The second is violated by the absence or the intentionally wrong usage of proper nouns, and the imaginary geography. Metafiction violates the third by plays of actual and non-actual. To complete Todorov's model and to analyse varied examples, we think over again the narratology based on linguistic models by referring to the modal logic that enables us to treat "questions considered heretic by orthodox structuralism" (M. -L. Ryan) and to propose a global model covering realism, absurd and metafiction

Повний текст джерелаHave you ever felt that the world was coming to an end? Do you know what one of your first instincts would be? This thesis looks closer at one of our most natural reactions: the immersion in storytelling. Leaving from Francesca Polletta’s research in the field of the sociology of social mouvements, the following pages are based on the observation that in times of catastrophe — may it be due to war, global warming or many other causes — storytelling plays an important part in the constitution and organisation of new collective actors that demand and create change, potentially contributing to an exit from crisis. If all forms of storytelling can help us act together, this thesis focuses on the political charge of a particular genre, that of science-fiction. Even if the academic world is barely starting to acknowledge the potential of this form of para-literature, the vast array of utopian, counter-utopian, dystopian, even apocatopian projets that dot the history of architecture shows that architects have long understood the subversive potential of this genre.Politicised architectural fictions will be our playing field: the corpus is made up of stories born on the realms of disaster at the dawn and dusk of the XXth century, as defined by the historian Eric Hobsbawm — starting in 1914 with the beginning of World War I and ending in 1992-1995 and the long siege of Sarajevo. These two temporal points are connected by stories and projets that belong to the same political family, that of anarchism — namely it’s pacifist branches — as it is understood and translated into architecture by Bruno Taut (The Glass Pavilion, Alpine Architecture, The Dissolution of the City, The Worldbuilder, The Galoches of Fortune, Mimari Bilgisi) and Lebbeus Woods (Underground Berlin, Zagreb Free-Zone, War and Architecture). Their anarchitectures are accompanied by the works of writers — representatives of the dissident and activist facet of science-fiction and fantasy — such as Paul Scheerbart (Rakkóx, the billionaire, Lésabendio. An asteroid novel, Malvu. The Helmsman, Glass Architecture, The Gray Cloth), J. G. Ballard (High-Rise), Gheorghe Săsărman (Squaring the Circle), as well as China Miéville (The City & The City). This overview will allow us to gauge through an architectural lens at the history and the transformations of the genre of science-fiction throughout the XXth century, as well as architecture’s changing attitudes in relation to conflict.Nonetheless, the subject is not isolated from it’s historical context. Shaped as a confrontation between two radically different visions of the future, the political positioning of our protagonists will face the fictions of rival groups, especially the pro-conflit stance of F. T. Marinetti’s futurism (Mafarka, the futurist) as well as that of the official architect of his mouvement, Antonio Sant’Elia (La Città Nuova). These fictions of a post-catastrophe architecture will translate themselves also into post-catastrophe bodies, since — in the good tradition of the modern avant-gardes — we will also reflect on the nature of the New Man they put forth. These “evolved” bodies will allow us to inscribe the radical, social, political and architectural dreams we study, witin larger contemporary debates on the place of Man in the network of life, polarised these days around the concepts of the Anthropocene of Paul Crutzen, the Capitalocene of Jason Moore and the Chthulucene of Donna Haraway

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis examines the literary representation of migration from a colony to the imperial metropolis in the period of decolonisation through a comparative analysis of novels by Anglophone Caribbean and Francophone Maghribi writers about migration to Britain and France respectively. A major point of convergence is the focus on the relationship of domination. Lamming, Chraïbi and Kateb address this explicitly as a colonial relationship that is psychological and cultural as well as economic, whereas the 1970s writers Boudjedra and Ben Jelloun place both immigration and colonisation within a wider framework of capitalist exploitation. The difficult material conditions and the racism targeting immigrants are not depicted for their own sake but are the occasion of a wide-ranging critique of European modernity. Maghribi writers attack the rationality of Western civilisation as oppressive, whereas the Caribbean novelists focus on the colonial roots of attitudes to non-Europeans. Both sets of writers nonetheless provide responses to European colonialist discourse and to the positive self-presentation of the coloniser through the manipulation of narrative point of view and voice and through the theme of mental breakdown. Most of the novelists set out to refute negative representations of immigrants by restoring aspects they feel are neglected, in particular the emotional dimension of the immigrant experience and the colonial determinants of the relationship between immigrants and natives. In doing so their representations of immigration often conform to the immigrant figure underpinning the discourses they attack. Their preoccupations are distinct from those of later writers and recent discourses about Caribbean and Maghribi populations in Britain and France : with the exception of Selvon and, more ambiguously, Mengouchi and Ramdane, the novelists are not interested in the process of formation of ethnic-diasporic minorities in France and Britain
Duflos, Anne. "L'écriture des masculinités dans la fiction nord-irlandaise contemporaine." Thesis, Lille 3, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017LIL30020/document.
Повний текст джерелаThis thesis explores the concept of masculinity in contemporary Northern-Irish fiction. My body of texts is constituted by six novels published in the decade after the Good Friday Agreement (1998): Breakfast on Pluto by Patrick McCabe (1998), No Bones by Anna Burns (2001), Fodder by Tara West (2002), The Ultras by Eoin McNamee (2004), Little Constructions by Anna Burns (2007) and The Truth Commissioner by David Park (2008). Because of the close links between masculinity, violence, national identity and the military, the issue of masculinity is of particular importance in the aftermath of the Troubles and of the peace process in Northern Ireland. In the novels, a dialectics between conformism and subversion of codes of manliness develops and reconfigures masculinity as ‘anti-virility’ in order to reveal the characteristics and functioning of the stereotype. The focus first on the supremacy of masculinity and then on the subordination of femininity in the novels leads us to notice a queer and feminist orientation in the writing strategies. This particular reshaping of masculinity and the unveiling of the gender order enable the emergence of a counter-narrative which challenges the hegemonic discourse about peace in the Northern-Irish public sphere. The aggressive incitement to make a fresh start and the pervasive optimism of this rhetoric are debunked by the lingering past residuals in the novels which ultimately display a profound malaise in the post-conflict Northern Ireland

Повний текст джерелаThe magical realistic narrative is deeply linked with the writing of history. Between the 1940’s and the 1980’s, throughout the entire America, has been developed and has evolved the magic realism which let the authors of such narratives to transcribe anthropological datas, coming from dominated populations of America (Natives, slaves or former slaves) in novels in which realism and magic can mix without tension. Then, by describing the past periods of the American continent, the authors of magic realism narratives have built a kind of fiction able to imitate, but not replace, the historical investigation : they can, with the help of the specific resources of fiction, give a voice to those who where kept in the dark for so long. We will study how the authors of magic realism narratives write history, et transcribe the representations of people who were not considered before. Such a literary phenomenon is fundamental in the building of an American literary filed. Our trilingual corpus gathers these nine authors : Miguel Ángel Asturias, Alejo Carpentier, Juan Rulfo, Toni Morrison, Wilson Harris, Toni Cade Bambara, Jean-Louis Baghio’o, Jacques Stephen Alexis et Maryse Condé

Повний текст джерелаOver the past twenty years, the discourse of hard science has appeared increasingly frequently on the British stage: quantum mechanics, chaos mathematics, thermodynamics and the natural sciences have provided dramatic material for contemporary artists. This thesis defines the resulting aesthetic, and the new relationship between theatre and knowledge that can be found in the work of dramatists such as Tom Stoppard, Michael Frayn, Timberlake Wertenbaker or Caryl Churchill, and theatre companies such as Complicite and On Theatre. The function of this scientific discourse is both epistemological and poetic: its forms are activated in new contexts, and bring metaphors and narrative structures to a postmodern drama characterised by uncertainty and multiple truths. These discursive transfers are analysed according to the relationship they create with science, which can involve imitating it as a rational model, criticizing it an instrument of power, or importing the shapes and patterns of scientific imagination
