Hand pose estimation (HPE) plays an important role during the functional assessment of the hand and in potential rehabilitation. It is a challenge to predict the pose of the hand conveniently and accurately during functional tasks, and this limits the application of HPE. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture of a shifted attention regression network (SARN) to perform HPE. Given a depth image, SARN first predicts the spatial relationships between points in the depth image and a group of hand keypoints that determine the pose of the hand. Then, SARN uses these spatial relationships to infer the 3D position of each hand keypoint. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conducted experiments on three open-source datasets of 3D hand poses: NYU, ICVL, and MSRA. The proposed method achieved state-of-the-art performance with 7.32 mm, 5.91 mm, and 7.17 mm of mean error at the hand keypoints, i.e., mean Euclidean distance between the predicted and ground-truth hand keypoint positions. Additionally, to test the feasibility of SARN in hand movement recognition, a hand movement dataset of 26K depth images from 17 healthy subjects was constructed based on the finger tapping test, an important component of neurological exams administered to Parkinson’s patients. Each image was annotated with the tips of the index finger and the thumb. For this dataset, the proposed method achieved a mean error of 2.99 mm at the hand keypoints and comparable performance on three task-specific metrics: the distance, velocity, and acceleration of the relative movement of the two fingertips. Results on the open-source datasets demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method, and results on our finger tapping dataset validated its potential for applications in functional task characterization.

The timber circle and other sites within the Sarn-y-bryn-caled ritual complex were excavated in advance of the construction of the Welshpool bypass and published in this journal in 1994 (Gibson 1994). The radiocarbon dating undertaken at the time relied totally on charcoal and, in the case of site 1 (the timber circle) and site 2 (a small panannular ring ditch), oak charcoal was the only available material. At the time, it was not possible to date cremated bone but now with this facility at our disposal, it seemed appropriate to redate these two important sites to check the existing dating and refine that dating if possible.

Анотація:
In this paper, we propose a high performance Two-Stream spectral-spatial Residual Network (TSRN) for hyperspectral image classification. The first spectral residual network (sRN) stream is used to extract spectral characteristics, and the second spatial residual network (saRN) stream is concurrently used to extract spatial features. The sRN uses 1D convolutional layers to fit the spectral data structure, while the saRN uses 2D convolutional layers to match the hyperspectral spatial data structure. Furthermore, each convolutional layer is preceded by a Batch Normalization (BN) layer that works as a regularizer to speed up the training process and to improve the accuracy. We conducted experiments on three well-known hyperspectral datasets, and we compare our results with five contemporary methods across various sizes of training samples. The experimental results show that the proposed architecture can be trained with small size datasets and outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of the Overall Accuracy, Average Accuracy, Kappa Value, and training time.

Анотація:
The purpose of this article is to explain the factors that enable Kao Yee Sarn, a small local community in Samut Songkram Province, maintain its identity as a ‘Thai community’ despite the strong influences of global change. The study uses the concept of EBS for the investigation of the interactions among places, user groups, socio-behavioral-cultural phenomena and time. Literature review, direct observation and interviews were conducted. It was found that the balance of the dynamic interaction among environment, social economic culture and residences’ behaviors is the key factor that enables Kao Yee Sarn to maintain its identity. Анотація:
The operation of the DC electric drive of the loop holder installed on the hot rolling mill between the stands of the finishing group, which is part of the SARN with the indirect principle of metal tension control, which generates control signals based on the control of the specific tension of the strip passing between two stands, is considered. It is shown that the SARN action algorithm is based on taking into account the impact on the strip of the auxiliary mechanism – the loop holder, the frame of which must be rotated to the optimal angle. The conditions are described under which the looper is in an equilibrium state, when the moment of the electric motor balances the moment of resistance on its shaft, determined by the force arising due to the tension of the strip. It is shown that the high-speed electric drive of the looper, which is in the steady braking mode for most of the cycle time and creates a braking torque, at the moment the strip enters the interstand gap, should provide a short-term forcing of the moment for the movement of the frame, followed by a stop in the allowable zone of the angle of rotation.

Chez les bactéries à Gram positif comme le pathogène opportuniste Staphylococcus aureus, la régulation médiée par les ARN régulateurs ou sARN n’a pas encore été associée à l’action des protéines liant l’ARN, qui jouent un rôle essentiel dans ces réseaux de régulation chez les Enterobacteriaceae. Néanmoins, le facteur de terminaison de la transcription Rho a récemment été décrit comme étant un atténuateur de la virulence de S. aureus, suggérant que cette protéine universelle serait un nouvel acteur de la pathophysiologie de cet organisme. Ce facteur est également impliqué dans la répression de la transcription pervasive qui résulte de la transcription au niveau de promoteurs cryptiques ou d’une translecture transcriptionnelle. Ce travail de thèse a permis de montrer que l’ARN messager rho est spécifiquement réprimé en phase stationnaire de croissance par l’ARNIII, un sARN dépendant du quorum sensing afin de permettre l’expression d’exotoxines permettant la dissémination du pathogène. Les cibles ARN inhibées par Rho qui ont été identifiées, sont souvent impliquées dans l’évasion immunitaire et dans différents processus d’attachement à l’hôte. Ce travail a permis de fournir des explications au niveau moléculaire des fonctions que ce facteur de terminaison bien conservé aurait acquis dans ce pathogène humain
In Gram-positive bacteria, such as the opportunistic pathogen Staphylococcus aureus, sRNA-mediated regulation has not been majorly linked to the action of RNA-Binding-Proteins, known to be essential for these regulatory networks in Enterobacteriaceae. However, S. aureus transcription termination Rho factor has been described as an attenuator of virulence, making this universal protein a new player in S. aureus pathophysiology. The protein is also required for the repression of “pervasive" transcription, a mechanism that results from transcription at cryptic promoters or from transcriptional readthrough. In this work, we have shown that the rho transcript is specifically inhibited by the quorum sensing dependent RNAIII at stationary phase of growth allowing exotoxins to be activated when the pathogen undergoes dissemination. Several Rho-repressed RNA targets, which have been identified, are involved in adhesion, dissemination, and host-response of the pathogen. Our data provide a molecular explanation for the functions of this well-conserved termination factor that have evolved in this human pathogen

Road traffic congestion is an increasing societal problem. Road agencies and users seeks accurate and reliable travel speed information. This thesis developed a network-scale traffic state prediction based on Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The method can predict the speed over the network accurately by preserving road connectivity and incorporating historical datasets. When dealing with an extensive network, the thesis also developed a clustering method to reduce the complexity of the prediction. By accurately predict the traffic state over a network, traffic operators can manage the network more effectively and travellers can make informed decision on their journeys.

A escabiose ou sarna humana é uma infestação originada pelo ácaro Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis com elevada relevância pela morbilidade que causa devido a forte prurido, elevada infecciosidade, surtos frequentes e persistência dos sintomas por vários dias, mesmo depois da sua total eliminação. O ácaro obtém os seus nutrientes através do sangue do hospedeiro, originando sulcos subepidérmicos caraterísticos e, consequentemente, surge uma resposta imune ao ácaro e aos seus respetivos produtos (secretados/excretados). Esta parasitose, não se manifesta apenas em países subdesenvolvidos, existindo à escala mundial e datando desde a origem do Homem. Constitui um problema endémico e epidémico, surgindo em crianças de ambos os sexos, de todas as idades, de qualquer etnia e nos mais variados níveis socioeconómicos. Doentes imunodeprimidos ficam mais suscetíveis a hiperinfestações, mais concretamente, à Sarna Crostosa ou Norueguesa, sendo esta altamente contagiosa e de difícil tratamento. Para além disso, o risco associado a infeções secundárias, nomeadamente do tipo bacteriano, é elevado, podendo incitar problemas como a glomerulonefrite pós-estreptocócica e a febre reumática (cardiopatia reumática). Desta forma, torna-se necessário, numa primeira fase, prevenir o contágio direto com uma pessoa infetada e, numa segunda fase, recorrer ao tratamento farmacológico e não farmacológico. Hoje em dia, já existem terapias de origem vegetal com propriedades eficazes contra S. scabiei. As mais variadas técnicas de diagnóstico têm vindo a evoluir numa tentativa de melhorar a sua rapidez e sensibilidade e, consequente, qualidade de vida do doente. Ainda como perspetivas futuras, tem-se apostado na imunoterapia e no desenvolvimento de vacinas. Scabies is an infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var hominis with high relevance for causing morbidity due to strong itching, high infectivity, frequent outbreaks and symptoms persist for several days, even after their total eradication. The mite obtains nutrients through the host blood, causing burrows into the skin and, therefore, an immune response to mite and their products (secreted/excreted) arises. This parasitosis, doesn’t manifest itself only in underdeveloped countries, existing worldwide and dating from the ancient times. It constitutes an endemic and epidemic problem, occurring in children of both sexes, at all ages, of any ethnicity, and in various socioeconomic levels. Immunocompromised patients are more susceptible to hyperinfestations, more specifically, to the Norwegian or crusted scabies, which is highly contagious and difficult to treat. Furthermore, the risk associated with secondary infections is high, especially bacterial type, and may encourage problems such as post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis and rheumatic fever (rheumatic heart disease). Thus, it is necessary initially, prevent direct infection with an infected person and subsequently, resorting to pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment. Nowadays, there are already treatments of plant origin with effective properties against S. scabiei. The various diagnostic techniques have evolved in an attempt to improve its quickness and sensitivity and, consequently, the quality of life of the patient. Also as future prospects, it has been staked in immunotherapy and vaccine development.

Compara los resultados maternos y neonatales entre las puérperas reactivas y no reactivas a SARS-CoV-2 en el Hospital San Juan de Lurigancho, abril - setiembre 2020. Realiza un estudio de enfoque cuantitativo tipo observacional descriptivo comparativo, retrospectivo y transversal con una muestra de 377 puérperas tamizadas para Sars-CoV-2, elegidas mediante muestreo probabilístico aleatorio simple, en el Hospital San Juan de Lurigancho durante abril - setiembre del año 2020. La técnica fue análisis documental de la historia clínica, se empleó estadística descriptiva a través del programa estadístico SPSS versión 25.0. Encuentra que el 26.5 % de las puérperas fueron reactivas a SARS-CoV-2 de estas el 60% fue IgG (+). Entre las características generales, las puérperas reactivas a SARS-CoV-2 en su mayoría no presentaron atenciones prenatales (69,0%) y fueron multíparas (68,0%). En las principales complicaciones durante el embarazo son la anemia (69,0% frente a 61,1%), las infecciones del tracto urinario (19,0% frente a 14,5%) y los trastornos hipertensivos del embarazo (8,0% frente a 3,6%); los resultados maternos durante el parto fueron el parto vaginal (59,0% frente a 60,6%) y las principales complicaciones son la ruptura prematura de membranas (16,0% frente a 12%) y el sufrimiento fetal agudo (12,0% frente a 7,2%). Dentro de los resultados neonatales, la aspiración de líquido meconial fue más frecuente en neonatos de madres reactivas a SARS-CoV-2 (9,0% frente a 7,6%). Concluye que los resultados en puérperas reactivas y no reactivas SARS-CoV-2 no se observó diferencia. Así mismo, en los resultados neonatales no se encontró diferencia significativa.

The aim of my thesis is to map out the attitudes and opinions of professional and future teachers in relation to the spoken language. The study has been conducted through an initial survey that was followed up by four in-depth interviews, two with professional teachers and two with prospective teachers. The study is of a qualitative nature and supports the sociocultural perspective. In the syllabus for the Swedish language, the Swedish National Agency for Education determines which position the spoken language should have in the classroom. According to the syllabus, the purpose of the language is to develop people's identity, give people the opportunity to express their feelings and thoughts while at the same time being receptive to other people's feelings and thoughts. Furthermore, The Swedish National Agency for Education believes that it is important to have a rich and varied language to be able to be a part of the society. In my research, it has been found that this view is shared by many teachers regardless of category. However, there are differences in how teachers work with the spoken language in the classroom and what is considered accepted within the spoken language. The result also indicates that the oral language spoken at school is affected by the type of oral language the pupils are used to at home. Syftet med mitt examensarbete är att utforska vilka åsikter och inställningar som yrkesverksamma och blivande lärare har i förhållandet till talspråket. Kartläggningen har skett genom en inledande enkät som utmynnade i fyra fördjupande intervjuer, två med yrkesverksamma lärare och två med blivande lärare. Undersökningen är av kvalitativ art och tar stöd i det sociokulturella perspektivet i den teoretiska utgångspunkten. Skolverket statuerar i kursplanen för svenskämnet vilken ställning talspråket bör har i klassrummet. Enligt kursplanen ska språket utveckla människors identitet, ge människor möjligheten att uttrycka sina känslor och tankar och samtidigt vara mottaglig för andra människors känslor och tankar. Vidare anser även Skolverket att för att kunna vara en del av samhället är det viktigt att ha ett rikt och varierat språk. I min forskning har det framkommit att denna syn delas av många lärare oavsett kategori. Dock finns det skillnader i hur man arbetar med språket i klassrummet och vad som anses vara accepterat inom talspråket. Resultatet tyder även på att hemmiljön påverkar det talspråk som eleven bär med sig in i skolvärlden.

Heat transfer enhancement in laminar regime by split and recombine (SAR) mechanism, based on the baker’s transformation, is investigated. Two different heat exchangers, called SAR1 and SAR2, are studied. Their geometries are inspired from the previous studies reported in the literature. The working fluid on both, shell and tube side, is water and the temperature on the shell side is kept constant. Experiments are carried out for the Reynolds number range 100<Re<3000 when the Prandtl number is between 4.5 and 7.5. The results show that the convective heat transfer coefficient in the first element of heat exchanger SAR1 is higher than that in the second one, i.e. SAR2. However, the variation in the convective heat transfer coefficient from the first to the third element along the heat exchanger SAR2 is less significant than that observed for SAR1. Moreover, SAR2 causes a higher pressure drop, especially when Re>1000, and provides a less uniform temperature field at the outlet.

Socially Assistive Robots (SARs) are a class of robots that are at an intersection between the class of assistive robots and that of interactive social robots. Besides providing some kind of assistance, SARs can provide user stimuli through interaction with the robot. SARs have been explored to assist in different healthcare therapies. This work is based on an open-source SAR called EVA. We have extended EVA’s capabilities for multimodal interaction and integration with light sensory effects. This paper presents our current research and future steps to use EVA for healthcare therapies.

Background: The current pandemic, COVID-19, is cause by an RNA Coronavirus that was recently identified as SARS-CoV-2. RNA viruses tend to have a high mutation rate; the rate is around a million times greater than that of their hosts. The mutagenic potential of the virus depends on many factors, including the fidelity of nucleic acid-replicating viral enzymes, such as SARSCoV-2 RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). The rate of mutation drives viral evolution and genome variability, consequently allowing viruses to escape the immunity of the host and develop resistance to drugs. Therefore, the characterization of SARS-CoV-2 variants might lead to implement better therapeutics treatments, vaccines design and identify new diagnostics approaches. Aim: The aim of this study was to establish a fast sequencing method to identify SARS-CoV-2 mutations in Qatar. This will help to assess if there are new viral variants that are spreading in country. Methods: RNA was isolated from samples collected from Qatar COVID-19 positive patients. The Artic Network V3 primer scheme and Oxford Nanopore ligation sequencing kit were used to prepare the sequencing libraries. Libraries were loaded on to R9.4.1 flow cells and ran on a GridION. Bioinformatics analysis was done following the Artic Network SARA-CoV-2 bioinformatics tools. Results: Genome coverage of sequenced samples was >80% and the depth was average at 200x. The coverage was highly dependable on sample viral load; samples of CT value lower than 30 resulted in better sequence coverage. The sequenced genomes were deposited in GISAID and were mainly clustering with genomes deposited from the UK. Sequences were compared to Illumina and sanger sequences and they showed compatible results. Conclusion: The use of ONT to sequence SARA-CoV-2 is a quick, affordable, and reliable technique to determine viral mutation. Using this technique, the first sequences from Qatar were deposited in to GISAID. Up to date, 700 genomes have been sequenced from Qatari samples.

Ground movements due to a range of governing mechanisms are recognized to pose hazards to the operating integrity of pipelines in California. As part of an extensive technology management program, Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) is involved in the development and implementation of satellite-based monitoring of subsidence ground movements impacting pipeline integrity. By both hosting a Gas Technology Institute (GTI) and Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI) study and undertaking an internal study, SoCalGas is supporting the investigation of two aspects of this promising pipeline integrity management technology. The current project of monitoring ground subsidence due to oil production in the San Joaquin Valley utilizes synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to derive sub-centimeter ground movement measurements from February to September, 2001. The estimates of the subsidence derived from the SAR data are compared with GPS survey results taken at 65 monuments. In addition, archived SAR data from 1992 to 2000 are used to better estimate the movement that has occurred there over the past decade.

Os robôs socialmente assistivos (SARs Socially Assistive Robots) surgem da interseção das classes de robôs assistivos e robôs sociais interativos, que se comunicam com o usuário. O objetivo dos SARs não é apenas fornecer algum tipo de assistência ou se comunicar, mas fornecer estímulos ao usuário por meio da interação com o robô. Este trabalho propõe a linguagem EvaML, uma linguagem específica de domínio baseada em XML para facilitar a especificação de sessões interativas de um SAR chamado EVA. O trabalho apresenta também a proposta de um simulador para o robô EVA, o EvaSIM, capaz de executar suas sessões interativas e auxiliar no desenvolvimento de programas para o robô. É proposta ainda a extensão das funcionalidades do EVA com dois novos componentes para o aprimoramento da capacidade de interação multimodal do robô, oferecendo reconhecimento de expressões faciais dos usuários e integração de efeitos sensoriais de luz. Além disso, este trabalho propõe e avalia um jogo sério para crianças com TEA (Transtorno do Espectro Autista) utilizando o EVA com as novas funcionalidades implementadas.

No ano de 2020, iniciou a pandemia da Covid 19, uma doença infectocontagiosa causada pelo vírus SARS-CoV-2. A transmissão do vírus ocorre por contato direto entre secreções infectadas com alta carga viral, o que se assemelha com a forma de transmissão da doença tuberculose (TB), que é causada pelo bacilo Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo verificar se houve mudança no perfil epidemiológico dos casos de tuberculose antes e durante a pandemia da SARS COV 2. Trata-se de um estudo transversal, com abordagem quantitativa, realizado por meio do levantamento de dados secundários do SINAN, referente aos casos de TB no período pré e durante a pandemia de Covid-19 (2018 a 2021). Nos 4 anos avaliados neste estudo, a prevalência de casos de tuberculose sofreu uma redução de 0,07% entre os anos de 2018 e 2019. Entre os anos de 2019 e 2020 a redução foi de 9,07% e entre os anos de 2020 e 2021 foi de 1,80%. Analisando as prevalências regionais, observa-se que existe uma redução na prevalência dos casos de tuberculose nos biênios que compreendem o período da pandemia de SARS-COV2 em todas as regiões do país com exceção da região norte onde a prevalência se manteve. Sendo assim, ao relacionar o período pandêmico e o número de casos de TB observa se uma redução da incidência quando comparado aos dois anos anteriores, essa redução pode estar ligada a medidas preventivas orientadas durante a pandemia de SAR-COV 2 e o aumento de casos subnotificados

SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus responsible for the infectious disease COVID-19 (Gorbalenya et al 2020 (Opens in a new window)), was first detected in the human population in December 2019 (Zhu et al 2020 (Opens in a new window)). It has since spread to become a global pandemic. Previously, two other novel coronaviruses caused illness in the human population. The first, SARS-CoV (for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) was recognised as a new illness in 2004 and the second, MERS-CoV (for Middle East respiratory syndrome) in 2012 (de Wit et al. 2016). These previous coronavirus outbreaks in humans occurred after bat coronaviruses passed through intermediate hosts (civet cats and camels, respectively) and then transmitted to infect humans (de Wit et al. 2016). SARS-CoV-2 infections in companion animals such as dogs, cats and ferrets and also in captive or farmed animals such as tigers and mink have been observed, likely as spill over events from contact with infected humans (WOAH 2022). There is now a large body of evidence from the United States that SARS-CoV-2 is capable of infecting white-tailed deer and that it can then spread further in the deer population (details in “What is the risk of SARS-CoV-2 being introduced into the cervid population in Great Britain?” (Defra, 2022). Assuming a worst-case scenario where SARS-CoV-2 is circulating within the UK deer population, this risk assessment was performed to determine whether handling and/or consuming UK-produced deer meat and/or offal may pose a risk of contracting SARS-CoV-2 in humans.

SARS-CoV-2 screen testing is routine serial testing of asymptomatic individuals outside of outbreak or known exposure settings to identify staff infectious with SARS-CoV-2 and exclude them from work. Routine asymptomatic screen testing of staff has been proposed as a potential mitigating strategy to reduce SARS-CoV-2 introduction and transmission in long-term care (LTC) homes. A rapid review of the literature found no real-world evidence to either support or refute screen testing in preventing LTC home COVID-19 outbreaks. There are several direct harms associated with screen testing, as well as opportunity costs, including exacerbating LTC staffing shortages. On the basis of the evidence reviewed, and given the high rates of protection of COVID-19 vaccines against symptomatic and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection, the potential harms and costs of screen testing among vaccinated LTC home staff likely outweigh the benefits.

Introducción: en Colombia, para controlar el SARS-CoV-2, se desarrolló la estrategia PRASS (pruebas, rastreo, y aislamiento selectivo sostenible), que busca detectar casos, aislarlos, controlar la cadena y velocidad de transmisión del virus. El objetivo de esta investigación es analizar las características sociodemográficas y clínicas de los casos positivos detectados en la búsqueda activa comunitaria para COVID-19 en la Isla de San Andrés. Materiales y métodos: estudio transversal descriptivo, realizado entre el 4 al 29 de septiembre del 2020. Para la recolección de información se hizo BAC (Búsqueda Activa Comunitaria), teniendo en cuenta los criterios establecidos para la definición de caso probable para COVID-19, en los 13 barrios priorizados. Se realizaron análisis descriptivos de las características sociodemográficas y clínicas de los casos utilizando Microsoft Excel®, Access, el software Epi- info 7.2. Resultados: en la BAC se notificaron por RT-PCR y Antígeno 592 casos, de los cuales el 56,4 % pertenece al sexo femenino, la mayor proporción se observó en el grupo de 30 y 39 años (21,6 %), el mayor número de casos se presentó en los barrios Natania (14,9 %) y School House (8,6 %). El 78,7 % de los casos, no presentó comorbilidades, el 7,3 % presentaba diabetes y el 3 % asma. El 24,3 % de los casos fueron asintomáticos, los síntomas más frecuentes fueron tos (25,0 %), fiebre (16,4 %) y cefalea (14,7 %). En el análisis de la distribución de las comorbilidades y síntomas por grupo etario se evidenció que no es estadísticamente significativo. Conclusiones: se confirmó el brote por COVID-19 en los 11 barrios priorizados de San Andrés Islas, lo que permitió caracterizar y aislar los casos positivos. A su vez se generaron recomendaciones a la secretaria de salud municipal acerca de las medidas de control para la contención del virus.
