The essay discusses the early history of the San Salvario chapel in Turin, commissioned by Christine of France – Duchess of Savoy and widow of Victor Amadeus I – as a votive offering for obtaining the right to govern the State until the full age of her heir. Guided by the inscription on the façade, the essay reconstructs the primitive design of the church (later heavily transformed), clarifies its reasons, meanings and functions, questions the critical interpretations to date and proposes a new stylistic assessment.

Renewable energy resources and energy-efficient technologies, as well as building retrofitting, are only some of the possible strategies that can achieve more sustainable cities and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Subsidies and incentives are often provided by governments to increase the number of people adopting these sustainable energy efficiency actions. However, actual sales of green products are currently not as high as would be desired. The present paper applies a hybrid agent-based model (ABM) integrated with a Geographic Information System (GIS) to simulate a complex socio-economic-architectural adaptive system to study the temporal diffusion and the willingness of inhabitants to adopt photovoltaic (PV) systems. The San Salvario neighborhood in Turin (Italy) is used as an exemplary case study for testing consumer behavior associated with this technology, integrating social network theories, opinion formation dynamics and an adaptation of the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Data/characteristics for both buildings and people are explicitly spatialized with the level of detail at the block scale. Particular attention is given to the comparison of the policy mix for supporting decision-makers and policymakers in the definition of the most efficient strategies for achieving a long-term vision of sustainable development. Both variables and outcomes accuracy of the model are validated with historical real-world data.

Over the last twenty years, Italian “migration literature” has made significant contributions to the redefinition of the country’s literary and cultural scene. While the initial phase can best be conceptualized as a generic “micro-system” encompassing canonical genres such as (auto)biography and the Bildungsroman, more recently, narratives of migration have diversified radically, exhibiting a high degree of linguistic and genre experimentation. The defining feature of some of the more successful recent novelists lies in their active engagement with critical social and political issues that concern contemporary Italian society through the vehicle of the crime fiction genre. A case in point is provided by Algerian-born Amara Lakhous, whose four recent novels Scontro di civiltà per un ascensore a Piazza Vittorio (2006), Divorzio all’islamica a viale Marconi (2010), Contesa per un maialino italianissimo a San Salvario (2013) and La zingarata della verginella di Via Ormea (2014) all use strategies of genre hybridization (polyphonic migration narratives blended with giallo and noir structures) to problematize notions of citizenship and cultural identity. This article argues that borrowing the conventions of the giallo/noir enables Lakhous both to provide new insights into shifting constructions of “Italianness”/citizenship in a period characterized by the transition from national to transcultural communities and to accentuate the continuity of the dialogical relationship between the crime fiction genre and contemporary social reality.

<p>What do we mean when we talk about public space? We asked this question, among others about the relationship between urban populations and public spaces, to some people in the context of the National Research Program (PRIN 2009) titled ‘Public Spaces, moving populations and urban renewal programs’. This paper reports part of the outcome of the research done within the local unit of Turin (Italy), which has been developed with a set of interviews to local stakeholders and with a field research in the selected areas of the City Centre and the districts of San Salvario and Barriera di Milano.<br />From the answers of the stakeholders emerged some relevant issues that I analysed through a selected literature about the concept of public space. The result is a sort of catalogue of typical public spaces of the city, as acknowledged by the local stakeholders and by the field research, and analysed through the international literature. The typologies identified are: traditional public spaces, ‘cappuccino’ spaces, weak sociality spaces, new virtual public spaces and the ‘District Houses’, a new type of public space emerging in the city. To identify them, some characteristic pictures of public spaces of Turin and interviews’ pieces are also reported.<br />However, facing this scenario built on the empirical research, we should mind that the conflicting views of public space depend also on the professional and cultural background of the interviewees, which is such fickle data that it cannot be catalogued. So, the catalogue proposed is not exhaustive, but only indicative of the trend about new perspectives on the meaning of public space which emerged through research conducted in the city of Turin.</p>

The article is devoted to the amazing events of the end of 2019 related to the situation of Myanmar in the international community. This is an unprecedented claim by the Gambia to the International Court of Justice against Myanmar and the decision of Aung San Suu Kyi to personally lead a group of lawyers to attend court sessions in the Hague. The leader of Myanmar denies charges of genocide and says that army units acted against militant separatists in Rakhine state − the Arakan Rohingya salvation Army fighters. Aung San Suu Kyi is convinced that the military operations against the militants were aimed at protecting the sovereignty and security of Myanmar. Special attention is paid to the speech of the leader of Myanmar at the trial.

This research addresses the assistance system of the Irmandade da Misericórdia de São Paulo for exposed children in the late XIX to mid-XX century. The actions and practices of individuals in charge of the system, the power relations, as well as the result of the actions of the ones involved in the exposed children's education were analyzed . The sources' survey was conducted in theArquivo do Museu da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo. The Relatórios da Mesa Administrativa for the years 1902 to 1947 were consulted, mainly the ones relative to the years of 1903, 1936, 1943 and 1944. The reports consisted of "reports" sent by the heads of institutions maintained by the Irmandade: Hospital Central, São Luiz Gonzaga, Externato São José, Hospital dos Lázaros, Asilo Santo Antonio and the Asilo dos Expostos. The exposed children's stewardshipreports were composed of two parts. In the first part, the steward reported the major events and the development of the activities taking place in the various sections of the asylum: leadership, school, wet nurses. The second part, written by the physician in charge for the children's medical assistance, discoursed on the of health, hygiene and wet nurses' nurture conditions . Those reports allow to identify the actions and practices of the stewards. From 1943 on, the kindergarten teacher's report was also available, as well as the social worker's one. A literature search was also conducted about São Paulo city's socioeconomic background and also on childhood social history, with an emphasis on the institutionalized child. It was possible to observe that Misericordia's assistance was dynamic, that is, it incorporated, although slowly, innovations concerning assistance and education to poor children. However, interventions in order to provide social mobility to those children were not detected, but rather an acceptance with their social status
Esta pesquisa aborda o sistema assistencial da Irmandade da Misericórdia de São Paulo para as crianças expostas do final do século XIX a meados do século XX. Analisou-se as ações e práticas dos responsáveis pelo sistema, as relações de poder, bem como o resultado da atuação dos sujeitos envolvidos na educação dos expostos. O levantamento das fontes foi realizado no Arquivo do Museu da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo. Consultei os Relatórios da Mesa Administrativa relativos aos anos de 1902 a 1947, principalmente os referentes aos anos de 1903, 1936, 1943 e 1944. Os relatórios eram compostos por "relatórios" enviados pelos responsáveis pelas instituições mantidas pela Irmandade: Hospital Central, São Luiz Gonzaga, Externato São José, Hospital dos Lázaros, Asilo Santo Antonio e o Asilo dos Expostos. Os relatórios da mordomia dos expostos eram compostos de duas partes. Em uma primeira, o mordomo relatava os principais acontecimentos e o desenvolvimento das atividades nas diversas seções do Asilo: direção, escola, amas-de-leite. A segunda era elaborada pelo médico responsável pela assistência médica discorria sobre as condições de saúde, higiene e a criação das crianças pelas amas de leite. Os relatórios permitem identificar as ações e práticas dos mordomos. A partir de 1943, tem-se também o relatório da professora responsável pelo Jardim de Infância e da assistente social. Foi realizada ainda pesquisa bibliográfica sobre o contexto socioeconômico da cidade de São Paulo e acerca da História social da infância, Com ênfase na criança institucionalizada. Com esta pesquisa foi possível perceber que a assistência da Misericórdia era dinâmica, ou seja, incorporava, ainda que lentamente as inovações referentes à assistência e educação de crianças pobres. Contudo, não se percebe uma intervenção no sentido de propiciar mobilidade social às crianças, mas uma conformação ao seu status social

This book examines the role played by the Franciscan friars of propaganda fide in the expansion and consolidation of Catholicism in the eighteenth-century Hispanic world. More specifically, it investigates the conversion agenda of the Franciscan Order's Colleges for the Propagation of the Faith and their missionaries in Spanish America and Spain. It shows how Franciscan colleges developed an extensive, methodical missionary program aimed at converting both Catholics and non-Christians. The Franciscan missionaries focused not only on the recruitment of non-Catholics for their eternal salvation under the umbrella of the Church, but also on the salvation of the sinners who were otherwise condemned to hell. This introduction provides a summary of the chapters that follow, covering topics such as the recruitment of novices and friars, the missionary training program in the Franciscan colleges, the misiones populares, and the contents of sermons and pláticas preached in the popular missions.

This epilogue discusses the Franciscan missionaries' evangelism on the periphery of the Spanish empire in relation to the themes of the book, and more specifically how they put their knowledge into effect to convert frontier native peoples. It first considers how the frontier ministry borrowed from the Franciscan colleges' training ethos and the conversion of Catholics before highlighting the challenges posed by frontiers to the missionaries. It then shows how Franciscan friars preached, catechized, and introduced a Christian way of life in line with their Catholicism during frontier missions. For the Franciscan missionaries, conversion went beyond recruiting non-Catholics for their eternal salvation under the umbrella of the Church; it also meant the salvation of the sinners who were otherwise condemned to hell. The discussion concludes with a commentary that puts the Franciscan colleges squarely at the center of historiographic debates that connect early modern colonialism, global Catholicism, and the missions.

This chapter focuses on the contents of sermons and pláticas preached in the Franciscan popular missions. Franciscan missionaries from the apostolic colleges of propaganda fide conducted itinerant preaching campaigns on the streets of hamlets, towns, haciendas, and cities throughout Spain and Spanish America. They were armed with a tailored message aimed at converting sinners and ensuring their eternal salvation. In addition to their doctrinal purpose to convert nominal Catholics, written sermons and pláticas were used as textbooks for missionary training. The chapter first provides an overview of the Franciscan science of oratory—homiletics, the art of religious preaching, or ars praedicandi—before discussing the Franciscan friars' preachings about moral, social, and political virtues. It shows how missionaries viewed colonial society while also providing an idea of the intellectual background of sermon authors.

This chapter focuses on Franciscan temporary missions known as misiones populares, which were aimed at eradicating what the missionaries viewed as deviant practices and to reform the customs of Catholics in communities. On the basis of the foundational documents of the colegios de propaganda fide, it is clear that the conversion of Catholics was paramount for Franciscan missionaries. The chapter first offers some conceptual clarification regarding religious conversion from a Franciscan perspective before discussing the techniques and methods of the Franciscan missionary program of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in the Spanish Atlantic world. It also considers the religious culture that stemmed from missionary activities within the frame of global salvation and shows that all Franciscan colleges carried out itinerant missions in their own dioceses along with neighboring bishoprics and, in some cases, distant dioceses, with help from bishops and archbishops.

Actualmente el transporte prehospitalario, como el que brindan las ambulancias para la atención médica de emergencia o soporte para atención primaria, enfrenta un gran problema en Lima: el tráfico, el cual además se ve afectado por el tiempo que transcurre desde que ocurre la emergencia hasta que el centro de salud envía una ambulancia para su atención. En ese sentido, es de suma importancia optimizar el tiempo de respuesta de este proceso para que la atención médica se brinde lo más rápido posible, ya que, durante una emergencia, el tiempo de atención es crucial. Por ello, este trabajo propone una metodología para optimizar la ruta y el tiempo de envío de una ambulancia para la atención de la emergencia tomando en consideración la distancia entre el centro de salud y el lugar de ocurrencia de la emergencia, específicamente, centrando nuestro piloto en el distrito de San Borja. Por otro lado, desde el punto de vista del paciente, se busca que este pueda pedir y acceder a una ambulancia lo más pronto posible a través de una única plataforma. Para ello se ha diseñado un programa de código abierto, codificado en Python con las librerías OSMnx y Networks, el cual hace uso además del algoritmo de Dijkstra para la optimización de la ruta a seguir hasta el lugar de la emergencia. Las pruebas experimentales pudieron validar que mediante este proceso se logró optimizar el tiempo de acción requerido para la atención de estos casos al facilitar la logística necesaria para enviar las ambulancias, considerando, asimismo, que este tiempo ahorrado podría hacer posible salvar la vida de las personas involucradas en tales eventos.

Artykuł dotyczy udziału Amerykanek w wysiłku wojennym Stanów Zjednoczonych podczas I wojny światowej w świetle poczytnego magazynu „The Ladies’ Home Journal”. Od kwietnia 1917 r., w związku z wypowiedzeniem wojny Niemcom, ruch amerykańskich sufrażystek stanął przed nowymi wyzwaniami i zadaniami. Na fali powszechnego patriotycznego zrywu niektóre działaczki kobiece, m.in. z National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) uznały, że w zaistniałej sytuacji należy poprzeć politykę rządu. W ramach National Council of Defense powołano oddzielną sekcję – Woman’s Committe (Komitet Kobiecy), którą kierowała Anna Howard Shaw, znana lekarka i zasłużona sufrażystka, honorowa przewodnicząca NAWSA. W kolejnych miesiącach wojny Komitet Kobiecy korzystał z „gościnności” redakcji „The Ladies’ Home Journal” propagując na jego łamach zaangażowanie Amerykanek i ich wsparcie wysiłku wojennego Stanów Zjednoczonych. W artykułach i felietonach zachęcano do różnych form obywatelskiej i patriotycznej aktywności, m.in. poprzez akcję oszczędzania żywności (hooverize), prace charytatywne, zakładanie ogródków wojennych, pomoc farmerom w sezonie letnim, etc. Liczne apele kierowano do dziewcząt i kobiet, zachęcając do pracy w Amerykańskim Czerwonym Krzyżu oraz Youth Women Christian Association (YWCA), a także w Salvation Army. Czas wojny stworzył dla Amerykanek okazję nie tylko na zademonstrowanie zaangażowanego patriotyzmu, ale i szanse na wkraczanie wielu z nich w obszary aktywności i do zawodów zdominowanych przez mężczyzn.
